We shall remember them! ANZAC Day 2011 marks the 96 th Anniversary of the landing of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps at Gallipoli in 1915. This year, 24 th April was the 60th anniversary of the Battle of Kapyong in the Korean War. The Battle of Kapyong is one of the most significant battles fought by Australians in the Korean War. This April was also the 70th anniversary of the Siege of Tobruk and the Battle of Greece. These significant battles between Allied and German forces in the Mediterranean region involved tens of thousands of Australian troops, where the determination of Allied forces significantly halted German advances into the region. On 10th April the ‘Rats of Tobruk’ commemorated the 70th anniversary of the beginning of the Siege. The Anzac spirit was born 96 years ago on 25 April 1915, far from home, when our brave soldiers landed at Gallipoli. On that day alone, approximately 2000 Australians were killed or wounded in the fight for freedom, democracy and peace. It is said that on this day Australia truly earned the right to be called a nation. The heroism of the men at Anzac Cove earned Australia respect and honour. As we commemorated Anzac Day, we remembered with gratitude the service and sacrifice of those first Anzacs. We also remembered the hundreds of thousands of Australian defence personnel who have served in wars and conflicts and as peace keepers since that time. As a strong, democratic nation, much is expected of Australia and its armed forces in trouble spots around the world – and in the spirit of Anzac our servicemen and women continue to make our country proud. We think especially on this day of those serving in Afghanistan in constant danger of their lives. We owe an enormous debt of gratitude to these Australians and Anzac Day is their special day and our opportunity to honour them and ensure that their service is never forgotten.

Shaded by Desert sand dunes, Lulled by the murmur of waves, Quickly we went ‘back to nature’, Forgetting Syria and old Tobruk caves, The roar of the guns at Tel Eisa, Brought war and reality near, We soon had a big job before us, No time for reflection or fear, Then came the war-wounded weary, Shell-torn wounds covered in flies, Sick of the war and the desert, The reflection of Hell in their eyes, There, on the dunes of For many the war had All they had, they had Their life – Freedom’s fend.

Some the grim reaper defeated, Back from the shadow they came, Saved by the skill of the surgeon, Once again they’ve a number and name, Back they can go to the furnace, That is fed by man’s malice and hate, Given lease to a life full of sorrow, Mayhap death was a kindlier fate. Some paid a price that was higher, An arm, or a leg, or a hand. Back on the trail they were started, That ends in dear Aussie land. We are leaving old ‘Figtree Alley’ We are going up further they say, Does it mean that the blood wasn’t wasted? Does it mean we are nearer the Day. Let us hope that the crosses that we leave behind, Let us hope that the blood and the tears of our kind, Will be remembered when we reach our own sunny land, They serve to remind us – War isn’t grand! Harold Roach, NX8448, 2/11 Field Ambulance, M.D.S., written after the 1st Battle of Alamein, Middle East WW2 This poem was sent home to Harold’s wife in a letter written on comfort fund toilet paper, as this was the only paper he had to write on…

☺ Smile for Life I AM sending you the following joke which will cement Pythagoras Theorem in your daughter’s mind and help her to remember it. I think I first heard in my school years, over 70 years ago, and it still reminds me of the theorem. There were three Indian Squaws living on a reservation many years ago. One slept on a buffalo hide, one slept on a hippopotamus hide and the other slept on an elk hide. In due time the three squaws all had babies, the one on the buffalo hide had a little baby girl, the one the elk hide had a baby boy, and the one the hippopotamus hide had twins, a boy and a girl … which just goes to prove that the squaw on the hippopotamus is equal to the sum of the squaws on the other two hides. I hope you enjoy this. Kath Brown. Thanks Kath, love it, Ed.

Happy Mother’s Day “Mothers hold their children’s hands for a short while, but their hearts forever.”

SUNSHINE Coast Mayor Bob Abbot said last week that council has some hard decisions to make in the wake of the State Government’s back flip on water reform. The Mayor made these comments following a special council meeting where councillors discussed the changes announced by the State Government to the Water Distributor-Retailer arrangements in South East Queensland. “There are a number of significant financial implications now facing our council and community as a result of Premier Anna Bligh’s announcement to cap water prices and dismantle the recently established water businesses,” Cr Abbot said. “Council supports lowering the costs of water and will continue do everything it can to get the lowest possible water prices for ratepayers. “The Premier’s proposed cap on water prices contains no commitment to reduce bulk water charges, which are the major driver of water price increases. “Consumers have been misled as capping water prices will not keep prices down when the State Government’s bulk water charges will continue to skyrocket in the coming years.” Finance and Business Portfolio Councillor Chris Thompson said council has determined that financial analysis of this announcement needs to be undertaken with a detailed report prepared for presentation back to council. “There is a need for council to undertake a thorough review of the implications from the potential change in water arrangements,” Cr Thompson said. “This will require significant effort to meet the 1 July 2011 response date indicated by the State Government and also ensure we are in a position to make the best decisions for our community. “The process and costs of dismantling the recently established water business and then rebuilding another one will be significant – opting out of Unitywater will not be a cheap and easy exercise. “If council were to proceed with water and sewerage services being returned there will be a need for a due diligence process followed by a significant implementation period, and it is extremely difficult to estimate the direct and indirect costs associated with this process without a thorough review being undertaken.” Cr Abbot said it is disappointing that all South East Queensland councils are still waiting for more details to be provided by the Premier. “An urgent request for all Mayors to meet with the Premier is being facilitated through the South East Queensland Council of Mayors so we can discuss the consequences of this policy announcement,” Cr Abbot said. “Councils are now placed in a very difficult position due to the Premier’s lack of consultation on this important issue. “It is unacceptable that councils are being pushed to make a decision prior to any legislation being drafted or put to Parliament for debate. “There are more questions than answers and until we see more detail the Premier’s announcement does nothing to address the long-term spiralling cost of water.”

Mary Valley residents call for council to reject piggery application LOCAL Mary Valley residents present their concerns about a free range piggery in the range of 400 standards pig units (approximately 558 pigs) proposed for Sterling Rd, Upper Kandanga to the planning Gympie Regional Council. A petition urging council to reject the application was presented with over 200 signatures. Gympie Regional Council will have the final say whether this development is approved. The application has been lodged with council and is being referred to other government agencies including Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI). Council and the referral agencies have requested clarification of several issues within the application. The applicants will have 6 months to provide this information. Lizette Phillips, a resident representing the local community said “The piggery proposal on the 53 ha property does not meet a number of the conditions of the Council’s intensive animal industry code including separation buffers required from neighbours, water ways like Mitchell Creek and

Kandanga Creek and protecting ecologically significant areas. “Not all neighbouring homes were included in the initial application. The separation buffer for a dwelling on surrounding property required by the council assessment criteria is 500m and the size of the site is to be not less that 100 ha. “The closest neighbour is about 22 metres and was not included in the initial application. Three other neighbours are all within a 500m radius of the proposed site. “These facts combined with a road frontage requiring a buffer of 200m, side and rear boundary buffers of 20m means there is virtually no land left for a piggery. It should be located on a bigger block. “We do not have any personal issue with pigs, free range farming or any agricultural pursuits. We agree with the need for intensive agriculture in appropriate locations, with appropriate management systems, and on sites that comply with the communities preagreed standards for setbacks and buffers e.g. the Council and State Planning Codes.” Glenda Pickersgill,

President of the Save the Mary River Coordinating Group also expressed concerns about the risk of contamination from surface runoff entering Mitchell and Kandanga creeks, recently mapped by state government as wetland management areas. “Kandanga Township and other land holders along the creek draw their water from Kandanga Creek which will be at a very high risk of becoming polluted from pig excrement. “As well we have Mary River cod and Australian lungfish in this stretch of Kandanga creek to protect,”she said. “We urge the Gympie Regional Council to stick to the council’s code for intensive animal development separation distances and use the state Farm Management Systems (FMS) guidelines for managing wetlands in intensive agriculture to reject this proposal.”

Community Bank network returns $50m BENDIGO and Adelaide Bank’s Community Bank network celebrates a significant milestone, returning more than $50 million to support local community groups and projects right across Australia. This milestone follows the Community Bank network returning more than $40 million to local communities in 2010, further strengthening the importance of the Community Bank network as an alternative source of funding for local community initiatives. Bendigo and Adelaide Bank’s, Executive, Customer and Community, Russell Jenkins, said the Community Bank® initiative has far exceeded all expectations. “Achieving $51.2 million in returned profit to the community is a fantastic achievement and shows the Community Bank® model is not only innovative, but makes significant and valuable contributions to communities across Australia,” Mr Jenkins said. Sunshine Coast Community Financial Services Ltd Chair, Rick Cooper said he was proud to be part of a banking network that supports local communities. “Cooroy and Tewantin Community Bank ® Branches are dedicated to the continued growth of the Noosa community,” Mr. Cooper said. The funding granted by the Cooroy Community Bank® Branch has gone towards supporting more than 50 community groups, schools and organisations including: Pomona King of the Mountain; Cooroy State School; Christmas in Cooroy; Eden Rehabilitation Centre; Cooroy Kindergarten; Cooroy State School; Cooroy Gymnastics; Cooroora United Soccer Club; RSPCA Road Home van; Noosa Life Education Van. “We hope that this success is an indication of things to come and we will continue to be an important part of the Cooroy and Noosa communities,” he said.

news Budgeting for a nest egg Fiona Hutchings, Branch Manager, Bendigo Community Bank, Cooroy WHAT a wonderful time of year Easter is - celebrating and relaxing with family and friends and the good old Easter eggs! Now that Easter has come and gone for another year, how many of us have thought about a different type of egg - the nest egg? We all strive to save our hard earned money, which is getting more and more difficult with life’s ever increasing expenses. There will be many key times in our lives that will make us think about our budget. Like starting a new job, getting married, buying a home, saving for a holiday and many more. Any time is a great time to think about your budget and planning to grow that little nest egg. Many of us struggle with budgets; they’re too hard, too complicated and too restrictive. A budget is a great tool to use to help start a savings plan and take more control of your money. This will also show you if you are living within your means and not spending more than you earn! Most

banks will offer help with budgets, whether it’s an online calculator that you key in your information, or a budget planner you record your own details. These need to be used to help track your income and expenses. For your income, take into account all of your wages, pensions, family payments, interest, dividends etc. That is usually the easy part, knowing what we earn. The expenses can be harder to work out. Put these into sections such as necessary expenses for your usual bills and non essential for other items such as entertainment, holidays, treats etc. To accurately work out your expenses, use your bank account statements, credit card statements or your bills to find out what you spend your money on. Remember those other bills that may come in less frequently, such as rates or car registrations. Think about having other bills as monthly deductions, rather than an annual bill, such as insurances. Once you have these completed, you can then work out your dispos-

Wellington’s Way With Member for Nicklin Peter Wellington SCHOOL and Anzac events: The end of the school term saw plenty of activities at our local schools, with both Cooroy and Burnside state schools holding official opening ceremonies for their new halls. I attended several Anzac services around the district at local schools at Woombye, Burnside and Cooroy before school broke up for the Easter holiday. Jenny and I were also involved in ceremonies at Nambour, Yandina and Cooroy on Anzac Day. Nominate a sporting volunteer: I encourage all local sporting groups to nominate an outstanding volunteer from their club for a “Valuing Volunteers in Sport and Recreation Award”. I attend many sporting awards nights when we see our sporting achievers win accolades for their success, but it is the many supporting volunteers who are the backbone of local clubs and often provide the training, grounds maintenance and a whole range of support for players. So let’s give our volunteers a bit of recognition. I know some sporting group stalwarts that have given years, often a lifetime of commitment to their elected sport or family of sporting enthusiasts. I look forward to presenting awards to our outstanding volunteers during National Volunteer Week, May 9 to 15. I will then nominate a couple of our outstanding local sporting volunteers for a State award. Forms are available in my office so groups can nominate a deserving volunteer. You can contact my office on 5441 6933 for application forms. Premier on notice over Mary Valley fire risks: In Parliament I took up the concerns of many Mary Valley landowners whose properties adjoin land purchased by the Government for the failed Traveston Crossing Dam. I have put a Question on Notice to the Premier and Minister for Reconstruction, Anna Bligh, asking what action is the government is taking to ensure these properties don’t become potential bush fire risks in coming months. The department needs to be aware of this fire hazzard problem which will follow on quickly once the rain eases. Call of Federal support to fight Asian Bees: In Parliament I called on Federal politicians to help the State Government to eradicate the Asian honey bee pest which has spread through Australia and has the capacity to devastate national food production. A working party has been working on this matter for some time, but the reality is that Queensland and the industry cannot tackle the problem or fund it alone. Club gains flood fightback funding: The Cooroora United Football Club has achieved funding from the State Government’s Flood Fightback Plan to carry out repairs on the playing surface at the Cooroy grounds. This program is vital in repairing our district sporting fields after flooding rains earlier this year, and returning our young sporting enthusiasts to their favourite sporting activities. Meet me in Cooroy: I will be holding my next Cooroy meeting in the Cooroy RSL boardroom on Thursday, June 2, from 10am. Anyone who would like to meet with me can organise an appointment by contacting my Nambour office on 54416933.

Just hang up MANY of us may have experienced personally or know someone who has been affected by the scam phone calls that are currently being inflicted on the unsuspecting public. If you haven’t then the following is a brief rundown of what they do. The basic ruse is an overseas operator ringing you and claiming to be from “Microsoft” Or “Vista Support” or some other tech sounding name. They will introduce themselves with a Western sounding name, even though they have a very different accent. Once they engage you in conversation they will tell you your computer is broadcasting packets on the internet, or has been infected by a bug, or some other dreadful prognosis, then direct you to open a diagnostic program on your computer to confirm your fears. The next step will be to talk you into opening a page on a website of theirs and download a program to your computer. This program will give them total control of your PC. You will see the mouse moving and keystrokes appearing upon your screen. They have ac-

cess to everything on your computer, emails, private data, pictures, passwords, the lot. The operator will then inform you that you require some fantastic program to correct all these so-called errors and request payment via credit card. Three things have happened. 1 - They have taken money from you. 2 - They have complete control of your PC including all your personal information. 3 - You have given them your credit card number. Dave Williams, from Cooroy Computers offers the following advice on what you can do to prevent this occurring: If an overseas operator rings you, and you are unsure of their intentions, Hang Up, don’t try to argue or communicate with them. We have had reports of them being abusive and trying to intimidate people into doing what they want. If the call is legitimate, they will call you back, if not then hopefully they will strike your number off their list as a failure and not bother you again.

Get down and dirty JOINED together by a love of dirt, well actually, it’s mud, ArtMakers Noosa, a collective of 12 local clay artists are exhibiting selected new works in their first major show in Noosa Regional Gallery. Entitled the ‘Dirty Dozen’, this group exhibition gets down and dirty to show mud in a diversity of striking shapes, textures, colours and finishes. Established in 2009, ArtMakers Noosa are an eclectic group of 12 local Sunshine Coast TAFE art graduates with a shared passion for experimentation and exploring boundaries. This group of mud lovers say that clay gives them the greatest diversity of artistic expression. Drawing on inspiration from the local environment, using local materials and a wealth of local and international experience, the exhibition features indoor and outdoor pieces. Viewers will

be treated to work integrating clay with LED lighting and a mix of art and sculptural pieces for contemporary and traditional settings. Lane Sladovich, Ellen Appleby and Ellen Vasiliauskas explore the theme of totems to create pieces that would create interest in any landscape setting. Robyn Gill continues to push the boundaries of porcelain, while Linda Perry creates movement in paper clay forms. Beatrice Prost explores the dimensions of lace and doilies in mixed media and Liana Volpe uses her flare for fashion to create figurative sculptural works. Like their previous exhibitions, pieces will sell quickly from this one, so make it along to opening night for your first choice. The exhibition runs until 29 May. Noosa Regional Gallery is open Wednesday to Sunday 10.00am til 4.00pm.

news Generosity in a shoe box at Cooroy State School

COOROY RAG WHAT difference a year makes! After another joint effort by Cooroy State School, Cooroy Community Bank branch and Rotary Club of Cooroy, life at school will soon be made a lot easier for more than 100 youngsters in East Timor. On April 13, Cooroy State School students assembled more than 100 educational care parcels to go to the children of Sao Miguel (St. Michael) at Raikotu – a school about 30 minutes west of Dili. The school has about 150 kindergarten students and some 250 of primary school age. This is the second year the Bendigo Community Bank and Rotary Club of Cooroy have partnered with Cooroy State School to help in making a change in the lives of many young people. Last year, hundreds of children turned up for the arrival of the shoe boxes and there promises to be another strong turn out when the shoe boxes arrive in East Timor later this year.

Sao Miguel is a school that was identified two years ago as a community school with no help from the Ministry of Education in Timor. Each parcel donated by the kids from Cooroy State School is a decorated shoe box with enclosed items including exercise books, rulers, erasers, pens and pencils, all topped off with a personal item from each student to the child opening it at the other end. “It’s been a great project for all of us to stay involved with, and it’s a wonderful way of giving back,” Cooroy State School principal Jenny Easey said. “The students had a ball putting the care parcels together again this year and it’s great to see their hard work and the fabulous support of their families too. Our assist in getting these parcels into the hands of the kids who need them most and we’re excited to be part of it,” she said. “Every shoe box was personally decorated and had educational items to further the edu-

cation of a child less fortunate than themselves. Each student also enclosed something small of theirs such as a soft toy, dice or even marbles. It added something simple but personal to each box,” Ms. Easey added. Bendigo Cooroy Community Bank branch manager Fiona Hutchings said she feels the project has built on something special. “Our Community Bank is all about giving back to community, and in this case the recipients will be international ones!

This project started a few years ago and after approaching Cooroy State School to see if they wanted to be involved, we were delighted to learn that the fine people from Rotary Club of Cooroy also wanted to help. Club representative Carol Johnstone in particular has been great and it was special to have Rotary representatives here to collect the shoe boxes with us,” Fiona said. Everyone involved in the project said they looked forward to the

video and photos of the boxes being opened in a few months, and thoughts are now turning to working through other coast schools to widen the support of the project. Tewantin and Pacific Paradise State Schools are already following Cooroy State School’s lead. Real interest has also been expressed in bringing some of the Sao Miguel students to state schools on the coast in coming years to advance their learning even further.

William Charles Carree 5 April 1921 - 10 April 2011 Doris Clara May Carree 29 October 1917 - 1 January 2010

CHARLES passed away on 10th of April in Selangor Hospital – 5 days after his 90th birthday. He became well known in Cooroy after moving back to the area to be closer to his family. He migrated from the UK to Eudlo (to family) in 1948 with his wife

Doris and their daughter Elizabeth. The family moved to Brisbane and then to Beenleigh in 1952 where Charles and Doris bought and managed the Beenleigh Private Hospital for many years. Charles returned to his career as Electrical Cable Jointer working in the

mines in Central Queensland and Doris became the Matron of Springsure and then Baralaba hospitals to be near him. They retired to the Gold Coast and then moved to Murwillumbah in 2004 where Charles and Doris bought a unit in a retirement village. It didn’t take Charles long to realize that the contract to purchase their unit was misleading and unconscionable and so he proceeded to educate himself on all facets of the NSW Retirement Villages Act. After a protracted legal battle he won his case against the developer and his extensive understanding of the Act was recognized by his solicitor. Although he was 80 years old he was appointed to be an Advisor to the Minister of Fair Trading regarding Retirement Villages in NSW. For several years he traveled to Sydney to attend meetings with the Minister. After Doris developed dementia, they moved to Carters Ridge to live on their family’s property. Within 6

months Doris’ condition deteriorated and she was placed into care in Carramar and then Kabara where she passed away on January 1 last year. After the family sold their property to the State Government for the now non-existent Traveston Dam, the family moved to Lake Macdonald. Charles visited Doris at every opportunity and became well known and respected by patients and staff. As a “Rat of Tobruk” and one of “Wingates Chindits” who fought behind Japanese lines in Burma during WW11, he initially joined the RSL Sub Branch in Eudlo in 1948 and retained membership in various branches including Cooroy, until his passing. Several years ago he organized a World Reunion of the Rats of Tobruk and was a life member of the Burma Star Assoc. In 1991 Charles conquered cancer of the esophagus and lived an active life until he was diagnosed with Melanoma in late 2009.

He faced his condition with extraordinary bravery and fortitude and gained the respect of all who cared for him. Liz and Rudi Agerbeek offer their thanks and heartfelt gratitude to everybody who helped care for both Charles and Doris during the last years of their life, especially the staff of Carramar and Kabara who cared for Doris with such gentleness and understanding while she was in their care. Our heartfelt gratitude is extended to the doctors and staff of Cooroy Doctors Surgery, the home helpers and wonderful nurses from OzCare who came daily to care for Charles. Their care and respect allowed him to stay at home until 2 days before his passing. We also thank our friends and neighbours who turned up with dinners and cakes and kind words of understanding and emails of support. Rudi and I will never forget the kindness shown to us over the past 7 years whilst caring for my parents.

news Warm Mum’s Heart this Mother’s Day Defeat Lantana with the Splatter Gun

COOROY RAG

Landholder using the Splatter Gun on lantana HAVE you heard of the splatter gun yet? No, it’s not a new type of high powered water pistol or paint ball gun for the kids. Instead it’s a very effective weapon which allows you to control lantana in difficult to access areas whilst minimising damage to trees, shrubs and grasses. When used on lantana foliage, the gas powered splatter gun distributes a low volume, large droplet and high concentration application of herbicide. The “gun” is easily portable and useful in difficult to access areas. The splatter gun technique is also beneficial as it limits off target damage to grasses, legumes and native plants thanks to increased accuracy and decreased spray drift. A year ago the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) purchased a splatter gun to lend to landholders who wanted to control lantana on their properties. The splatter gun has since been used by 14 landholders, and the feedback has been fantastic. The landholders have reported that the portability of the splatter gun has allowed them to get into lantana infestations

they had not been able to treat using other spraying methods. Some landholders have also used the splatter gun to great effect in controlling large lantana bushes in difficult to access pasture land. The ability of the splatter gun to not impact on either native trees growing under lantana bushes or any pasture grasses around the lantana bushes has also been commended by the landholders. Many of them have requested a second go with the splatter gun. Due to this demand and the growing waiting list, the MRCCC is purchasing a second splatter gun kit to loan to landholders in the catchment. If you think the splatter gun is just what you need to get on top of your lantana problem and would like to borrow one of the MRCCC kits please contact us on 5482 4766. In conjunction with the loan of the splatter gun, the MRCCC has offered landholders the opportunity to develop a lantana management plan for their property. The aim of the plan is to ensure the splatter gun is used effectively and to assist landholders to make the most of their time and resources. Landholders who have completed a plan have agreed it has given them a much clearer and targeted view of their weed control activities.

A little bit of trivia IN English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts, so in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them ‘Mind you pints and quarts, and settle down.’ It’s where we get the phrase ‘mind your P’s and Q’s’.

It was obvious why Grenny is one of the longest surviving restaurateurs in the area. Thanks to Grenny and his staff, a wonderful night was had by all who attended. Many people are asking “What is this Probus?”

Probus Clubs are an off shoot of Rotary - a local group of retired professional (pro) or business (bus) people who gather at least once a month for fun, fellowship and a jolly good time . . . and we at the Cooroy Probus do that well! Raffle prize THE state’s top craftsmen and craftswomen will go head to head at the Wood & Craft Festival in the Memorial Hall, Cooroy this Friday and Saturday – May 7th and 8th. The event attracts almost 3000 spectators. A club spokeswoman says woodwork clubs from Warwick to Rockhampton and all points in between will be competing in an inter-club competition, the winner taking home a perpetual shield and a sliding compound bevel saw valued at $1200. There are six categories to enter, woodturning, carving, general woodwork, fret work, pyrography and toy making. (Pryrography is the artistry of using a hot iron on timber). The craftsmen and craftswoman have put weeks and often months of hard work into creating their masterpieces. People will truly be amazed by what can be done with a basic piece of timber. There will be stalls with crafts for sale and lots of demonstrations. A beautifully hand crafted drop leaf dining table made by Bob Chaplin will be the main raffle this year and the winner will be drawn on the Saturday afternoon. People will get the opportunity to see the Cooroora Sawmill in action and timber slabs will be for sale. It will be a terrific day out and a chance for the different wood clubs to show off their best pieces of work. Doors will open at 8.30 a.m. with a $2 entry fee. Light refreshments will be available in the hall, catered by the Cooroy Scouts Group. Hope to see you there! For more information contact Kevin Brewer 54425178 or Billi Jan Campbell 5449-1548

COOROY RAG Helping Queenslanders for 30 years by Carol Watkins, Group Leader, Cooroy S.E.S. THIS issue, we will talk about Preparing an Emergency and Evacuation Plan; and What to do Before, During and After a Storm or Cyclone. To prepare your Emergency Plan: research local potential hazards for the area; be aware that Council has a Local Disaster Management Plan in place; record important details on your plan; ensure everyone in your household is prepared; display Emergency Plan on fridge or notice board; record evacuation details on your Home Emergency Plan; make a list of personal and household items to take with you. If advised to evacuate protect yourself from debris by wearing a hat, strong clothing, gloves and sturdy shoes. As the storm approaches: listen to local radio / TV for further information; batten down house securing doors and taping windows; store loose items inside; place documents, valuables, medications &

warm clothing in plastic bags along with your emergency kit; lock up pets, fill water containers, place car under cover if available; disconnect electrical items and outside TV/radio aerials; assemble your Emergency Kit; make sure your family knows which is the strongest part of the house, what to do in the event of a warning or evacuation as per your Emergency Plan; check your neighbours are aware of the situation and are preparing When the storm strikes: stay indoors; stay in the strongest part of the house; stay well clear of windows; listen to your radio for updates; ensure pets are safe and secure; protect yourself with mattress or blankets if necessary If you are caught outside: shelter in a hard topped car or a solid building ; never shelter under small groups or single trees; if driving - stop clear of trees, power lines, storm water drains and streams; if it is a cyclone, don’t assume it is over if there is

a calm period as this could be the ‘eye’ of the cyclone and violent winds will soon resume from the opposite direction. After the storm: don’t go outside until officially advised it is safe, listen to local radio for official warnings and advice; if you have evacuated, don’t go home until advised, use the route recommended and stay calm; don’t make unnecessary telephone calls; beware of fallen power lines, damaged buildings and trees, flooded water courses; don’t ignore warnings and don’t go sightseeing; check your home and property for damage; help your neighbours if they need assistance. Don’t forget you can call the SES for assistance during an emergency on 132 500. For information on the local SES please call for Cooroy, Carol Watkins, 0427 349218; Pomona, Steve Muir, 0428 571213; Tewantin, Murray Caddie, 0410 512535; and for Boreen Point, Ron Williams, 0488 795102.

Bright future for this young photographer THE future keeps getting brighter for young Cooroy photographer Malcolm Hewitt, whose hard work over the past year is starting to pay off. Contemplating the approaching end of his Photoimaging studies, Malcolm, 18, says that his experience as a student has only strengthened his drive to pursue a photographic career. “When I was in high school,I would take photos on the weekend for fun.It wasn ’t until I won a few competitions that I realised this could actually be the start of something.” Since then, Malcolm has never looked back, developing his technical skills and style through studying Photoimaging full time while working in the FujiFilm lab at the Cooroy Guardian Pharmacy. “My studies and my job go hand in hand. I now have the knowledge and ability to both take and print high quality photographs.” He also services the photo machines at the Pharmacy, ensuring consistent print quality. Malcolm ’s talent has been recognised by Australia ’s best known wildlife photographer,Steve Parish, for his previous wildlife work. “I would s hoot any animal, rusted tractor... pretty much anything at my parent ’s farm on the weekends.I got a small group of followers on the internet though

Maison de Provence

Steve ’s website and managed to get one of my photos on the front page of his websit e.“ Malcolm then went on to win the Queensland category of the Australian Catholic University Photography competition which prompted him to start pursuing photography as something more serious than a hobby. On completion of high school in ‘09 Malcolm enrolled into the Photoimaging course and has received continuous distinction for h is work from his tutors. “The first six or so months of the course were firmly based on the technical components of photography, where we learned basic camera function right through to the complex physics of light .” His style has evolved into people and portraiture using multiple flash units to create dramatic and striking images. A recent series involved applying a commercial approach to humorous and vaguely bizarre portraits. “I feel that my work is conceptually based yet created in a commercial way.” At the end of last year, Malcolm was invited to be a featured artist in an exhibition in Toowoomba where his work was showcased along side high profile photographers and artists from around the country. A donation of his work was auctioned to help raise much needed funds for a local special school. Amongst other current projects, he has also recently collaborated with Wedge Motorsport, a local car racing team where he is shooting portraits and racing images. Over the coming months Malcolm will be shooting four new series of images from which he hopes will launch his dream career.

“The next few months will be pretty intense, but I ’m hoping that all of the hard work will enable me to fulfil my vision.” If the past 2 years are any indication for this this young photographer, all signs point to a successful career in the fast paced and competitive field of photography. To keep up to date, view more of Malcolm ’s work, or enquire about his services visit www.malhewitt.com

WHAT a wonderful morning! The sky remained dry for the run and all the children participated and enjoyed the morning. The Preppies started the run first with a great deal of energy and enthusiasm followed closely by the year ones and twos. The four houses were filling up with war cries all blending together. Parents and grandparents were hoarse with the cheering and hands were red from clapping. The older girls were overcome by emotion at the end of the run that we had tears flowing freely. The Blue-Tongue Lizards took out the shield with the Cockatoos second and the Kangaroos and Tree-Frogs sharing the third position. Jennifer Parish from OPERATIF! ‘We just knew he would be blown away by the uniqueness and beauty of this Aussie setting and that his voice would be thrilling in this venue.’ Antonio is keen to establish an Opera career in Australia and will audition for the opera companies while he is visiting. He currently studies with some of Italy’s greats, including the famous tenor Nicola Martinucci, who describes his voice as perfect for the great dramatic tenor roles. “Often, in the evening, Antonio goes to the square in front of the Pantheon in Rome, to do some practice in a big space,” Jennifer explained, “and it was here that we first heard him. He will be very comfortable singing outdoors that’s for sure!” Antonio was fascinated to learn that Jennifer and Stewart have their own company in Australia and that for over 15 years, they have

dining & entertainment Moonlight and Mangolias Art with a twist at The Indee

COOROY RAG

THINK Gone With the Wind and think Moonlight and Magnolias, the brilliant stage comedy about the writing of the Gone With the Wind screenplay. This platinum season is coming to The Indee at Eumundi in May and features three of the Coast’s finest actors, Brett Klease, Luke Lanham and Wayne Clark, plus Marcia Essers, who combine with iconic stage actor-director, Carol Burns, to put this exceptional play on the

stage. Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn, is certainly the best known line from Gone With the Wind and probably the best known line ever uttered by Clark Gable in any of his movies. There’s a myth that US Censors, the Hays Office, fined David O Selznick $50,000 for using the word damn and yes, it nearly happened, but it didn’t. Independent movie producer, David O Selznick had paid unknown author, Margaret

Mitchell, $50,000 for the rights to her book. After three weeks filming he realised that at that stage the film stank. So he fired the production team and closed down filming, which left the stars, Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh, Leslie Howard and Olivia de Havilland sitting idle, at a cost of $50,000 a day. Selznick immediately hired director, Victor Fleming (Wizard of Oz) and ace screenwriter Ben Hecht, to fix things up and what followed is the hilarious basis for the story of Moonlight and Magnolias. Moonlight and Magnolias plays 7.30 Friday, Saturday 27th, 28th May and Sunday 29th at 2pm and 7.30 Friday, Saturday 3rd, 4th June plus 5pm Sunday 5th, at The Independent Theatre at Eumundi. Opening night tickets all $22, other nights $22 and $20 concessions, Sundays $18 with special bonus group discounts available on application. Call 5472 8200 to reserve tables.

MAMA Mia! “Art with a twist” to celebrate our mothers will be held Fri May 6 at the Cooroy Bowls. This night is not only a great pre dinner interlude; funds raised go to a great local cause and this time it is for the Cooroy Primary School. Guest Artists for the evening are the incredible Betty’s Tap Dancers with their take on “that” hit song by Abba, children from the school with a selection of their fine works of art through brush and pen, and a special demo from Templetons. And of course, a wonderful selection of visual candy from the Tinbeerwah Art Group, specially crafted to capture the essence of our mothers! And to top the exhibition off, one lucky person will win the delightful Avril Hare “Rose” piece (pictured) and there is a lucky door prize of a complimentary dinner to Suko Thai. Numbers are limited so call the Club on 54476131 to reserve your corner. Entry is just a $5 donation, with a % of all sales going to Cooroy State for essential upgrades to their facilities.

Mother’s Day Concert THIS year’s Mother’s Day Super Concert at Eumundi”s Indee Theatre, is power-packed with talent. In the big line-up is show songstress, Calyce Bennetts, jazz man Brian King, song duetists, Bev Gourlay and Aart Shouten, violinist Iain MacLean, Australia”s Pam Ayers Sheila Wolverson, The Young Players, tenor Barrie Woods and featuring Elizabeth Hood and her friends, Opera Queensland star, D”Arne Sleeman and noted pianist, Mark Leung. The annual Mother”s Day Super Concert is at 2 o’clock, Sunday May 8th, doors open at 1.30. Tickets are $15, under 12s $10. Call and reserve your seats on 5472 8200 or tickets at the door.

DIVISION 12 residents will soon be able to say goodbye to unexpected cold or ruined evening meals and blank TV screens due to sudden power failures. Energex has announced it will start construction of a new sub-station in Grahams Road, Pomona, which will do away with unexpected power blackouts in the area. Divisional councillor Lew Brennan said Energex chose the site after consultation with Cooran residents. “The community of Cooran came together to help progress this after doing much research and hard work,” Cr Brennan said. “Energex listened to their constructive alternative proposals concerning an initially selected location for the sub-station.. “While the decision might be disappointing for some residents in Grahams Road, its presence will not create extra traffic or noise. “The site is open grazing land, a considerable distance from houses and the Pomona school.”. Energex said initial construction activities at the site will include excava-

tion and foundation works with the delivery of the transformer and modular building planned for late 2011. “Landscaping around the perimeter of the sub-station will start as early as possible to allow new vegetation to become established,” a spokeswoman said. “Energex is working with both council and local environmental groups to coordinate a joint approach to landscaping which includes a focus on using native plant species where possible.” Works will occur between 7am and 6pm on weekdays only, with traffic management in place. Some additional overhead power line work will also take place but power outages are not expected during that work. Cr Brennan said the new sub-station will answer concerns from many residents about frequent power cuts. “The power supply to Cooran, Pomona and Boreen Point has been regularly interrupted and suffers from inconsistent, quality supply,” he said. “This has been recognised by many of the residents in the district - but from later this year, all that will come to an end.”

THIS year the theme of Heritage Week is ‘Heritage of Water’. Noosa Museum will be having a display of water themed photographs and stories titled “The Wild, Woolly and Wonderful Ways of the Waters of Noosa”. On Wednesday 11th May we will be hosting a Heritage Walk through the town of Pomona to Cooroora Creek Park starting at 1.00pm, then along the side of the creek to the Island of Reconciliation where Phil Moran from Noosa Landcare will give a short talk on the vegetation around the creek and the park and also on the Biosphere. Phil is always an entertaining speaker so we encourage you to come along. On Friday 13th May the museum in conjunction with the Majestic Thea-

tre and the Sunshine Coast Regional Council will celebrate International Museums Day to present a good old fashioned double-bill movie and museum night - Buster Keeton’s silent short film “One Week” and Ben Stiller in “Night at the Museum” followed by an atmospheric night visit to the Noosa Museum. Doors will open at 5.30pm for a 6pm start at the Majestic Theatre at 10 Station Street, Pomona. Pre-purchased tickets: $27 Families; $10 Adults; $5 Children. Free Breakfast at Cooran State School

Romeo and Lisa from Pomona IGA and from left Lily Wallace, Hailee O’Hanlon, Jeremy Jacques, Jesse Randall EACH Thursday morning the Cooran State School Parents and Citizens prepare a nutritious breakfast for the children. This practice came about because teachers found that more and more children were coming to school without breakfast. Skipping breakfast can diminish mental performance. Breakfast helps learning, as you are better able to pay attention and are more interested in learning. This year Pomona IGA has come to the party and is sponsoring the breakfast by donating the food each Thursday for this event. This breakfast is also supplemented by produce from the schools edible garden.

pomona Pomona to Cooroy – for two bucks THERE is a handy ‘bus’ – well it’s actually a taxi – service available to Cooroy and Pomona residents who need to travel between the two townships. And travellers on the service, in either direction, only pay $2 each way (and just $1 for a child). It is part of a range of Flexilink services introduced across the Coast, funded by Sunshine Coast Council’s public transport levy to help smaller communities link up without the need of a car. The service, which runs via Black Mountain Range Road and Cudgerie, is ideal for parties of up to 10 who may want to visit shops, markets, or attend a special event, and could be utilised by clubs or retirement villages to ferry groups back and forth. The trouble is, although the service has been available since May last year, it hasn’t been getting used much. So it’s the old story: if you don’t use it, you lose it – in this case, by June 30 2011. Bookings are easy – just call 1300 511 163 (at least two hours ahead of intended departure) and choose from three daily services, Monday to Saturday. If you need wheelchair access, just say so when you book. The route starts from Cooroy’s town centre, along Mary River Road, via Black Mountain and Cudgerie, and into Pomona’s centre at Reserve and Memorial Drive, with the same way back. By arrangement, you meet the vehicle wherever you need to, along the

route. In most cases, the times will ensure a link-up with other public transport services (hence the Flexilink name). Divisional councillor Lew Brennan said the Sunshine Coast Council Travelsmart transport team had put together a great service for Pomona and Cooroy out of the transport levy. “It isn’t easy for people to make changes to their day to day lives and sometimes that is reflected in the slow take up of new transport services,” he said. “The next few months will give people a chance to try the taxi and it will give us a good opportunity to assess its need.”

Unconscious Connections

LIFELINE Community Care Sunshine Coast is offering their Women of Worth course once again to women across the Coast who want to build their self confidence, self worth and enhance their self image. The course which incurs only a gold coin donation for inclusion will be held once a week at the Cooroy Library over 6 enchanting weeks, starting on Thursday 5th May. The new location will give women who found the Maroochydore courses out of reach, the opportunity to participate. Women of Worth has been running for 2 years now and is exceeding all expectations in its popularity and success. With professional counsellors facilitating the course which has already significantly changed lives for the better, women are encouraged through a safe and nurturing

THERE are preconceptions about hypnosis which is an important element of Neuro Linguistic Programming treatment. In hypnosis you don’t go to sleep and you don’t go into Zombie Land. Trance is not a state of non-awareness, it’s a state of heightened-awareness which opens doors to your unconscious mind. You continue to hear noises around you and importantly, the sound of the hypnotist’s voice goes with you wherever you go. Suggestibility has nothing to do with a specific personality trait but some people are more suggestible than others . . . depending on physical, psychological or emotional variables at the time. You may go into trance quickly but for most, hypnosis a learned experience. The more you do it the more effective it is, the more your body relaxes. Your conscious mind then quietens down and allows your unconscious mind to accept suggestions needed to adjust faulty programming that can regularly bring grief into your life. It’s great to be suggestible because when your Mind can make suggestions to your Body ‘at will’ you can heal anything. The conscious mind can cause sickness but more significantly the unconscious mine can create wellness. And that’s precisely what NLP sessions are all about. An obligation free appointment with me will quickly reveal your potential for true happiness

AS life seems to get busier, we are less likely to take time out to look after our minds and bodies, but it is precisely for that reason that it’s even more important to do so. Massage Therapist, Lisa White, says when our lives are so full, it’s easy to forget that our bodies are trying to regenerate themselves all the time. In order for our bodies to do this, we need clean water, good fuel/food and rest/ relaxation.” Lisa is a qualified massage therapist who specializes in relaxation and aromatherapy massage for women. “I have just moved into the area and am offering professional massage from

The success of the group is evident in the results within the women who have participated and the amount of women seeking the group simply through word of mouth. Each time the group is offered, the interest and consequent bookings are overwhelming. A research project of the Women of Worth course concept has been completed by an Intern Psychologist to evaluate how it runs and its results. This study will contribute to chances of future funding for the group which will only improve and expand the longer it is in operation. The concept for this interactive group has stemmed from an incessant need within the Sunshine Coast community for a supportive women’s group. Many participants have found friendships within the group that may last a lifetime. The group is beneficial in that it concentrates on promoting sense of self and confronts issues common to women regardless of their life styles and life paths. Low self esteem, a negative self image and reduced confidence are indiscriminate of age, ethnicity, occupation, shape, size, talent and success. They can affect anyone. my treatment room based at my home in Ridgewood. “Just in case you haven’t experienced the bliss of relaxation or aromatherapy massage, let me share with you a little about the benefits of this incredible form of body work: The Beneficial Effects of Massage1. Improving Circulation – massage increases the blood flow into the area & creates a more complete filling & emptying of blood vessels, thus a greater supply of fresh blood is bought to that area. This in return creates a greater removal of waste products & brings increased oxygen & nutrients. The heart pumps stronger with a reduction in blood pressure as a result. 2. Relaxes the Nervous System – massage has an overall effect of sedating the nervous system. It improves nerve function & can be utilized to switch between the sympathetic & para sympathetic nervous system. 3. Reduces Pain – massage can reduce pain in an area by the stimulation of reflexes around the area without actually working on the site. This can occur because the surrounding nerves can be anesthetized, or the reflexes which give information to the nervous system sedated. Any pain spot can also be directly massaged to reduce pain as long as it is light enough so as to not aggravate the problem. 4. Improved Muscle Condition – muscle fatigue can be reversed much more rapidly by massage than by rest of the same duration. Muscles are relaxed, compounding fibers separated, stretched, and an increase in muscle tone occurs. Injured muscles have a far higher healing rate due to the removal of inflammation & dead tissue, & influx of fresh oxygen & nutrients. It will also help to prevent wastage of unused muscles & decrease the formation of adhesions which

in turn also improves performance. 5. Improves Lymph Drainage – massage is particularly useful in increasing the flow of draining lymph. With the lymphatics not having a pump, massage milks along the lymph taking with it metabolic wastes, toxins, cellular debris & invading organisms. 6. Increases Hemoglobin & Red Blood Cell Count – massage has been proven to help anemia & increase the oxygen capacity of the blood. White blood cell count is increased by up to 70% for the following few hours after treatment. 7. Improves Skin – massage will loosen adherent tissues & reduce scarring. Blood is increased to the surface which will increase toxin removal from the system. The appearance & texture is improved by stimulating subcutaneous nerves & capillaries. 8. Aids in Removal of Wastes from Lungs – Tapotement (percussion type movements), assists in the removal of mucus from the lungs. 9. Increased Performance of Individual Organs – the heart beats stronger, the liver works harder to detoxify, there is a stimulation of the digestive system & absorption of food matter. The emptying of the bowels is also hastened. The kidneys are stimulated with an increase in urine output & excretion of nitrogen, inorganic phosphorous & sodium chloride. The lungs expel more toxic wastes, and overall there is an increase in metabolic processes. 10. Psychologically Beneficial – besides the benefits of reducing stress & promoting generalized relaxation, the power of touch is one of the most beneficial points. Emotions can be released, & with trust from the client there is a condition of psychological comfort. Above information taken from Foundational Massage Resource BookSCIT Nambour.

Looking after our newest mums BECOMING a new mum is such a significant event, and is often a time of great change. Our bodies have also undergone great change in the 9 months leading up to the birth, as well as in the initial period following the birth process. It can sometimes be overwhelming enough trying to care for this new little person and many women simply forget about looking after themselves. Other women are extremely keen to get their bodies back to their pre-pregnancy state and begin on a vigorous exercise program, sometimes either too early or too aggressively. It is important to get a good balance between simply doing nothing, and doing too much, too soon. As physiotherapists, we commonly see the effects of pregnancy changes influencing women later down the track if they aren’t addressed early on. During pregnancy, a hormone called “relaxin” softens the ligaments of the body to enable the pelvis to expand and accommodate a baby. Unfortunately for some women, this hormone effect gives them a painful, unstable pelvis and can also affect other joints in the body. This hormone effect can carry on for a few months following the birth of the baby and if painful conditions are not addressed, the instability that results can cause long term problems. Abdominal weakness and separation commonly occur following childbirth. When the abdominal muscles separate during pregnancy, it is known as a rectus diastasis. Women who have a rectus diastasis will notice a “ridging” down the centre of their abdomen when they try and sit up from supine lying. Often midwives and physiotherapists will check for this in hospital and provide an abdominal binder to help hold the muscles together while they heal. Whether you have an abdominal separation or not, it is impor-

tant to protect the weakened abdominal muscles and prevent excessive strain on the lower back. Always “brace” or gently draw in the lower tummy when you go to move or lift your baby. When getting out of bed, roll onto your side to get up, rather than getting straight up. This “bracing” exercise can also be done as a gentle abdominal exercise. Going hand in hand with abdominal support is the pelvic floor muscles. All women should be doing pelvic floor exercises as a life long habit for good health. Pre and post pregnancy exercise is absolutely essential, whether you have had a vaginal birth or not. No high impact sport or activity should be undertaken until you are able to brace with your lower abdominals and hold a good strong pelvic floor squeeze repeatedly. Walking is a great, safe and free activity which is good for both mum and baby. While pushing your baby in the pram, concentrate on good posture, draw in your lower abdominals and try to squeeze your pelvic floor as much as possible. Always take care of your back by ensuring you bend your knees to lift (and brace abdominals) and avoid bending over to care for your baby. Try and have change tables at a good height and use baby baths on benches rather than bending into a low bath. When putting babies in capsules, put one leg into the car and lunge, rather than purely bending at the waist. As simple as these tips sound, they make a huge difference in the amount of pain and discomfort experienced by new mums. For more detailed and personal advice on returning to sport or beginning an exercise program post-natally, please see a physiotherapist or qualified exercise professional. triggers thrive this autumn WARNING as conditions create a storm for asthma and allergy sufferers. Local residents with asthma are being warned to be extra vigilant this autumn, as the season delivers a trifecta of asthma triggers – mould, more dust mites and increased exposure to pet allergens. According to National Asthma Council Australia Chief Executive Officer, Kristine Whorlow, these three nasties are the leading triggers of asthma in Australia. “Many areas of Australia are experiencing mould problems following an unseasonal wet start to the year; there is an annual autumn indoor dust mite population spike; and, some people face increased exposure to pet allergens as soft-hearted pet owners allow their four legged friends more household access as temperatures plunge,” Kristine Whorlow explained. “This can all add up to make autumn pretty miserable for many people.” Kristine Whorlow points the finger at house dust mites as the biggest problem. “Around 45 per cent of the population have an allergy and of those people, almost 80 per cent react to dust mites. “In fact, dust mites are the number one trigger for asthma in Australia and research from Sydney’s Woolcock Institute of Medical Research has shown

that dust mite levels can increase two to three fold during late autumn, compared with summer levels1,” she said. House dust mites are microscopic creatures that feed off human skin scales. They are mostly found in the home and live in soft furnishing such as beds, bedding, carpets, upholstered furniture, soft toys and clothing. Kristine Whorlow said the bedroom is the site of greatest exposure to the pesky mite, however, there are a number of avoidance measures and tips to reduce exposure to allergen triggers. Typical control measures include: • washing sheets and pillow cases weekly in water hotter than 55oC. • covering mattress, pillow and quilt with dust mite resistant covers, which must be washed every two months. • removing soft toys or hot washing them weekly or freezing them overnight. • dusting hard floors and surfaces with a damp or electrostatic cloth. • cleaning carpets weekly using a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. “It’s important to remember that dust mite allergy is a perennial problem and dust mite control measures need to be adhered to year round – not just in autumn,” Kristine Whorlow warned. Comprehensive dust mite control advice can be found on the National Asthma Council Australia website: www.NationalAsthma.com.au

Of the 8 selected, 5 have chosen to go to Thailand. This success follows in the footsteps of Samantha Vines being selected for the World Youth Cup in Greece last year. More medals for Clinton ON the afternoon of Friday March 25 th the Queensland Long Course State Masters Swimming Championships got under way at the Oasis Pool Banora Point N.SW. Cooroy’s infamous Pocket Rocket Clinton Stanley ably supported by his Parents Chris and Sue, travelled across the border remembering to change the time on their watches, for Clinton’s first race the 400 freestyle. Although Clinton had not fully got back into regular training this competition was a good opportunity to see how he was progressing and enable the Stanley family to visit family near by. The next day Clinton swam the 100m Freestyle. He was joined by fellow Noosa Master Team mates, Bob Morse, Brian Hoepper and Paul Petiford who teamed up with Clinton for the 4x100m Freestyle relay. On Sunday Clinton competed in the 50m Freestyle, 50 Butterfly, 200m Freestyle as well as the 4x50m Medley Relay. Cheering and watching Clinton progress was Ian Robinson, Clinton’s Coach, who has been working with Clinton for the past 15months. Ian has intro-

name for itself as a great place to train and achieve success in competing at a National level! To help the students with the cost of travelling to Thailand the club will be running various fundraising events starting with a celebration dinner to be held at Sala Thai in Eumundi on 21st April 2011 at 6:30pm - a three course Thai buffet. This event has been completely booked out which is a great testament to the community support the club is receiving. If there is anyone that would like to sponsor these students or have a fundraising suggestion, please contact the club - Kim Vines on 0422 373 198 or Amy Colley on 04 111 88 645.

Clinton’s results were 2 Gold 3 Silver and 3 Bronze medals.

APRIL was an exciting month amongst the rain with the combined Easter and Anzac festivities turning the RSL Club and Maple Street into a venue to catch up with long lost and new friends! Thank you to all volunteers and to the RSL staff who made for another memorable Anzac remembrance, and to all those people who attended. A very special thank you to Phil Hutchinson, who single handedly painted the exterior of the Club in readiness for the big day. There are still some bits left to do including the emblems, but I am sure the community would agree that the wait will be well worth it. The Anzac Art evening “with a twist” was a real treat. Many thanks to Joanie Boyce for her good old timers, and our guest poet who shared some touching moments. Proceeds of the evening went to the Cooroy Pomona Sub Branch to continue their good works. Next soiree will be at the Bowls venue May 6 - “Mama

Men’s 4’s champs - Russell Butler, Merv Stonehouse, Col Nalder, Bert Hyatt Mia” with Betty’s Tap Dancers, creations from the Tinbeerwah Art Group and Cooroy State School, a bit of mothers day poetry and a wonderful treat from Templeton’s Dance Studio. Entry is just a $5 donation for the Cooroy State School. The Club has been successful in obtaining funding to provide a Sport & Recreation CoOrdinator for Cooroy. Initially, sports to be assisted cover swimming, equestrian, badminton, cricket, gymnastics,

basketball, tennis, and once established junior football and others. This is an exciting addition to the already extensive services that the club provides to the community, and Cooroy has been very fortunate to access this grant. The application to the Centenary committee has been received for the funding of the Memorial Hall works, updates as they come to hand. Anzacs has a new Head Chef on the way and he tells us that he

has some superb new creations for the Hinterland Menu, so come along in May and check out Paul’s style! Congratulations to club members on their winnings from the past month – Rosalie Kirkman is on her way to a Lazy Beach Weekend at the Oaks Seaforth, and Victor Toonen took home the Jack Daniels Bonanza. John Pulvirenti won the Diners Club draw of a Dinner Party for himself and friends, and Thelma Anderson is on her way

to Stradbroke Island. And not to be outdone, Rossco and his Goose Club Keno syndicate just missed out on creating history. Lucky devils! On the Bowls front weather has created a lot of rescheduling for many events. Coming up in May is the Joe & Glad Williams Annual Mixed, Patrons Day and the 63rd Anniversary event. Night Bowls will be having their end of season parties, and getting ready for their winter frolics. If you have not ever had a try at Bowls, please contact the Club and we will slot you in for some free coaching and a game. Don’t forget that by becoming a Community member of your club you get to help your choice of 40 different organisations here in Cooroy. Pomona Demons kick off season SEASON has begun and new player/coach Sam Krushka (with the old master Bill Magin assisting from the coach’s box) has a couple of good wins under his belt. We have a couple of home games now Noosa at 2pm on 07 th May followed the next week with another home game against Caloundra at 2pm on the 14th. April 9th was the first game for the season away against Gympie. Final Score was Pomona 16.5.101 to Gympie 7.3.45. Pomona Goal kickers: Kyle Brown 7, Alex McKinnon 4, Sam Krushka - 3, Pe-

Sam Krushka ter Larkin - 1, Jesse Lawrence - 1. Pomona Best: Lanze Magin, Kyle Brown, Daniel Maxfield, Blake Magin, Andy Hennings and Jesse Lawrence.

Pomona started slowly conceding the first 2 goals of the match. From there we found our feet and kicked the next 5 goals to take a good lead into quarter time. The match was pretty even in the 2nd and 3rd quarters until our fitness came through in the last where we kicked 8 straight goals to Gympie’s 1 to finish up 56 pt winners. Most impressive was the way the midfield, particularly Lanze Magin, kept at their task all day and really stepped up in the last when the game was there to be won.

The backline was solid in only conceeding 7 goals for the game, new recruit Greg Meade was most important down back with his strength at the contest. Up forward, new recruit Kyle Brown, starred with 7 goals in his first game for the Demons, while 16 yo Jesse Lawrence kicked his first goal and set up a few other with his pace and skill. The following week was first home game and Pomona Demons fronted up to an undermanned Bribie Island. Final score was Pomona 25.7.157 to Bribie 4.2.26 Backline

was solid all day led by veteran Aaron Husband. Up front Kyle Brown finished everyone’s hard work off with an impressive 13 goals. Once again the Demons really came home strong with an 8 goal final quarter. As always Lanze Magin was great and deservedly best on ground (nothing to do with his Dad being assistant coach). Thanks as always to all the volunteers who help keep this club running (though we could always do with some extra hands), our sponsors and of course the supporters!

Noosa Pirates Rugby League ROLL on the Fridays, roll on! With no Noosa team to be beaten at home on a Friday night this year, the U13 Gold side continued the Friday night fortress theme, downing Stanley Rivers under lights. The final score was 28–14. The U16 team had a great game to make it 4 from 4 wins, with a 20-4 victory over a determined Gympie. U7 Blue enjoyed another dynamic game with outstanding ball skills and good team work. They were just too strong for Nambour on the day. U7 gold side played Nambour. With the team playing short all the boys enjoyed the full game. U7 white team played very well. They all

played with great commitment but it was the twins Col and Sean Evans playing their best games of the year so far. U9 blues had a tough tussle with Nambour. All the boys had a great game ending with a length of the field try to Harry Baker. Leading the way was man of the match Jayden Blackman closely followed by Bailey Grace. U10 Gold played a solid game against Nambour. With a strong game in defence and great team play Noah earned man of the match. U11 gold played a very big and physical Caloundra side. Both sides showed flair in attack but with 6-6 score line defence was the winner on the day.

Special mention to Jaiden Roberts and Tom Henderson for outstanding efforts. Noosa U12 Blue travelled to Caboolture, and with just 13 players, showed plenty of stamina and courage to compete strongly in a hard fought contest. The team ended the game with only 11 players and scored the last try to eventually go down 14-4, great effort boys. U12 gold had a great 20 to 8 win over a very good Caboolture team; best for the young pirates was Ali Backach, Aaron Burdon, Nick Thomas and Tom McClune, great job boys! Great effort by all the U14 boys who took on a very physical Palmwoods.
