IT’S official. IGA Cooroy and Wimmers Shop & Save have sold, with the new owners, Seasons IGA, tak ing over this week.

And they have big plans for Wimmers Shop & Save.

One of the Seasons IGA owners and CEO Dustin Pereira told the Cooroy Rag Wimmers Shop & Save will close at noon on 30 Novem ber to undergo a complete transformation.

“We will be changing the format of Wimmers.

“We want to differentiate Wimmers and IGA Cooroy but want Cooroy to know we own both stores and will give customers two offerings for their shopping based on their needs.”

Wimmers will be rebrand ed Seasons IGA Garnet Street. It will reopen with a significantly increased grocery offering and will become a destination for gourmet and specialty

products.

“We will have a larger range of products including gourmet, deli, hot foods, specialty cheeses and a larger mix of direct local products.”

And because the store doesn’t have a restriction on hours, it will be open longer hours.

“Seasons IGA Garnet Street will be open from 6 am to 8 pm every day of the year, including public holidays.”

Meanwhile, IGA Cooroy will stay as it is.

“IGA Cooroy is trading so well we don’t need to make any immediate changes; we are planning an overall facelift in 2023.

“All the staff are staying on but we are always looking for new staff.”

With the purchase of IGA Cooroy and Wimmers Shop & Save, the Seasons Group now have 11 supermarkets from Brisbane to Cooroy.

“Our stores aren’t typical

supermarkets. They are differentiated in their offering from gourmet cheese to fresh produce and meat.

“We also love to support local suppliers and have many from Noosa, Maleny, Cooroy and inland.”

For outgoing owners Peter and Jackie Zipf it is the end of an era.

Peter and Jackie first bought the IGA Cooroy 26 years ago when it was the Cooroy 4 Square.

Since then, they sold the

business for a short period, built the Pomona IGA and then built Wimmers Shop & Save.

While the couple will con tinue to have Pomona IGA and their other businesses, Peter said it was time to step back and slow down.

“Jackie and I would like to thank the community for all their support over the past 26 years.”

HOW time flies when you’re having fun. It’s hard to believe my family and I have been travelling now for nine months.

While we have been back and forth regularly to our beloved home and community, timeaclising (a term I have made up for acclimatising to daylight saving and non-daylight saving time every time we cross the border) and dodging floods and extreme weather events in both states, we have experienced some amazing places, people and attractions.

I asked my children what the highlights have been and they said:

• Snorkelling around Lady Musgrave Island

• Visiting Darling Downs Zoo

• Watching polocrosse, camp drafting and speed shearing competitions

• Spending time with family at CaragabalCampoven Cookoff

• Learning archery

• Feeding pigs and riding horses on our friend’s farm

• Visiting museums and heritage centres

• Bushwalking and free camping

My highlight is simple: seeing different places in this incredible country of ours while spending quality time with my cherished family.

I’d like to thank again the wonderful Cooroy Rag team, committee and the community for supporting me so I can have this adventure with my family. I’ve enjoyed bringing you your paper from all corners of NSW and Queensland.

While working remotely as a journalist is the norm these days and something I’ve done for 10+ years in my previous online journalist position, it helps when you have a great team behind you.

COOROY’S Christmas tree is celebrating 10 years this year.

The lights have gone up on the pine tree on Maple Street, marking a decade since it was first decorated as the town’s official Christ mas tree.

Christmas in Cooroy committee member Car ol Christensen said it all began in 2012 when Ricon Constructions’ director John Jenkins wanted to give back to the Cooroy community.

“He engineered the wire light fittings for the pine tree in Maple Street, and the Chamber of Commerce added another event to Christmas in Cooroy – the Lighting of the Christmas Tree.”

Ricon sponsored the light ing of the tree for Christmas from 2012 to 2016.

Carol said when Ricon moved their business from Cooroy, John gifted the lights and wires to the Chamber of Commerce.

“The community was lucky enough to have another Cooroy business, Studio Steel, then owned by Barry and Anda Hamlet, step up to make sure Cooroy had the best and brightest Christ mas tree.

“All of the Cooroy com munity boasted about how Cooroy's Christmas tree was the best around.”

But in 2018, the tree had grown and the lights were in need of replacement.

“The Chamber reached out

to the community and funds were raised to light up the tree once again.”

For the last three years, even though Barry and Anda sold their business, they have continued to make sure all the lights are in order to be placed on the tree.

“This can take weeks as they have to straighten and test the lights.”

This year, that job fell to new volunteer Colin Thomp son.

Carol said the job of get ting the lights up on the tree usually costs up to $5,000 as it requires a cherry picker and traffic control.

“In 2020, the Chamber was concerned about the growing cost to decorate the tree but then we had a Christmas miracle.

“Local Energex crews offered to give up their time and trucks to give the Cooroy community their fa mous tree – and have done so since.”

Carol said the chamber is very grateful to Barry Ham let (pictured) and the Cooroy Energex workers who bring plenty of Christmas spirit to our town in the shape of a sparkling Christmas tree. “With additional thanks to Colin Thompson this year. We can’t wait to see the tree lit up again on Friday 9 December at Christmas in Cooroy.”

THE bridge replacement on Cooroy Belli Creek Road is nearing completion.

Noosa Council has ad vised that despite delays due to recent wet weather, the bridge replacement is in its final stages.

“We anticipate that the project will be completed by the end of the month pending the delivery of the guard rails,” Infrastructure Services Director Larry Sengstock said.

“Road closures will remain in place until the bridge is complete.

“We thank the commu nity for their patience and support during the final stage and we will inform the community as soon as the bridge is open,” Mr Seng stock said.

Residents can keep an eye on Council’s Facebook page for details on a likely opening date.

Noosa Council started

work on building a new two-lane concrete structure on Cooroy Belli Creek Road in July this year, after the bridge had been identified for priority replacement.

Construction was expected to be completed within four months pending favourable weather and construction conditions. The existing bridge has been closed for the duration of construction with traffic detoured via Lawnville Road.

FOR the month of October, pink was the name and rais ing money for breast cancer was the game.

And now the final figure from the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce’s month-long Pink Up Cooroy fundraiser is in.

Organiser Carol Chris tensen said a total of

$9,295.58 was raised for the McGrath Foundation.

“This final figure includes all the funds raised through out the month including the Pink Up Cooroy breakfast and auction, store fundrais ers, and gold coin dona tions from the sale of all schnitzels during October at Cooroy Hotel, Cooroy RSL

and Saw & Mill.

“We’re thrilled. This money will help the McGrath Foundation supply specialist breast care nurses for men and women with breast cancer.

“We’ll definitely be aiming to raise $10,000 next year,” Carol said.

Well done, Cooroy!

Council clarifies height restrictions

NOOSA Council has reaf firmed that any proposed changes to height restric tions for affordable and social housing will not harm the character or amenity of the shire.

The call comes after Council’s newly endorsed Housing Strategy provides potential incentives to en courage investors to provide “a greater delivery of acces sible, social and affordable housing in areas with good access to public transport, employment and goods and services”.

The inclusionary planning provisions in the strategy achieve this through mecha nisms such as bonuses and incentives to increase the developable floor area or allow one additional storey in larger centres such as Noosa Junction and the Noosa Business Centre.

Noosa Mayor Clare Stew

art said any changes will include community consulta tion, and that too is non-ne gotiable and is required under the Planning Act.

“It’s important to clarify that any proposed amendments aim to contain projects to certain areas in the shire because, through the Hous ing Strategy consultation, the community supported locating more housing in centres where services and transport are provided.

“Similarly, any potential relaxation of height limits for an additional one storey will only occur where social and affordable housing out comes are being delivered and strict guidelines being adhered to,” she said.

Parts of Noosa Junction and Noosa Business Centre are currently limited to three storeys. In Tewantin, the height limit is two storeys; however there is one site on

“There are absolutely no plans in this strategy to have four storeys anywhere in the Tewantin Business Centre,” she said.

Cr Stewart said Council remained committed to protecting the current height limits in the new Noosa Plan outside these areas.

“There are strict building heights for different areas across the shire, which have been in place for many years and these remain non-negotiable.

“All councillors are com mitted to maintaining the look and feel of, and pro tecting, Noosa’s heritage, character and what makes Noosa different by nature,” Cr Stewart said.

A COOROY man is on the hunt for the rightful owner of a $50 note left in a Cooroy ATM.

Adam A’Hang, from Lake Macdonald said he was in the IGA Cooroy on Thurs day 22 September at 5:30 pm when he went to use the ATM and noticed a $50 note still in the machine.

“It must have been from whoever used the ATM before me.”

Adam turned the note over to the IGA Cooroy service desk and is now calling on

the rightful owner to come and retrieve it.

“Fifty dollars is a lot to some people and I want to make sure it gets to the person who left it there.

“Obviously they will have to prove it is theirs and the only way this could be done is to look at security footage from that day and they would be the person that used the machine right be fore I took the money out.”

Adam did a post on Face book the day he found the note, but so far no one has

come forward.

“I’ve followed up with the store manager and the mon ey is still there.”

Adam said the Facebook post got lots of positive comments.

“Everyone said it’s great, that it’s doing the right thing and that’s all it comes down to.”

Adam hopes if the rightful owner is never found, perhaps the money could be used to purchase non-per ishables and donated to those in need.

Have

“memory lane” leading visitors from the street or the rear car park to the old jailhouse.

“It will have interactive dis plays programmed to give visitors an in-depth overview of our Cooroy history, our pioneering families and industries, and historical events.

“We envision the informa tion centre being manned by different community organisations from the Cooroy area, and the cells being used for photo opportunities and providing useful information about our region and highlighting local businesses.

THE Cooroy Memorial Hall (CMH) has taken another step towards its proposal to relocate the old jailhouse, which is currently on the Cooroy Police Station residence property, into the centre of Cooroy for use as an information and heritage education centre.

The CMH committee has published a survey and is asking Cooroy residents to have their say on the proposal to relocate and repurpose the 111-year-old jailhouse.

Committee member Amy Dwyer said they need the community to have their say about the proposal for a mandate to put before Noosa Council.

“For this to happen, we

need community push behind it.

“We value the Cooroy community’s opinion and we would like to know if the community supports this proposal and to hear their thoughts and opinions.”

The survey asks residents to answer yes or no to a number of questions, such as whether they think the plan will benefit Cooroy, if they think the site is suit able, and whether they will visit the information centre and memory lane.

Amy said the CMH committee envisions the information and heritage education centre being a community hub for hinter land information for locals and tourists alike, with a

“We want to retain some of the histories of the local people before it is lost. I myself am a fourth gener ation of an early pioneer of Cooroy and I can remember my ancestor but once I'm gone, the first two genera tions are lost.

“That's the reason for the memory lane and the pio neer history,” Amy said.

Amy said the proposed site to relocate the jailhouse is part of the old car yard beside the Memorial Hall.

“The land next to the hall is gazetted CMH land, with Noosa Council as trustee.”

The survey is available at: https://www.surveymonkey. com/r/Y2TWQ62 and print ed versions are available at the hall on Maple Street and can be posted to PO Box 19, Cooroy 4563.

CONSTRUCTION of a new $4 million police facility on the block where the jailhouse is now situated is expected to begin in the near future.

At the second community consultation with police to provide feedback on the

design of the new station, Queensland Police Prop erty and Facilities Director Linda Jacobsen said the jailhouse fits in the precinct and will currently stay where it is.

“There were offers for the jailhouse to be relocated

but there is room to leave the old jailhouse on the site so we will.

“It will be moving up the hill closer to the front of the site so it is easier for people to access as part of the heritage walk,” Ms Jacobsen said.

THREE years ago, Noosa local Elizabeth Reynolds and her best friend and artist, Linda Wills, wanted to collaborate on a story. Elizabeth, or Fizzi as she is known, is a lawyer and has always dealt in words while Linda, aka Lili, has a magic watercolour talent.

Fizzi said her connec tion to the Noosa tourism industry gave her the desire to honour the delights of Noosa with a story about an icon or mascot that locals or tourists could take away as a memento of this glorious destination.

“Koala spotting in the Noo sa National Park has always brought joy to locals and tourists, young and old. Our local koalas are cherished, but sadly under threat for their very existence.”

And so Karla, the coolest koala in Noosa, was born. “The Karla books show

case our beautiful part of the world and raise money for koala conservation and habitat preservation for these much-loved Australian animals who have recently been declared an endan gered species.”

There are now three children’s picture books in the series and to date, more than 5,000 Karla books have been sold and sent all around the world.

“From this, over $5,000 has been raised to assist our threatened local koalas.”

Karla was also a gold sponsor of the 2021 Noosa Biosphere Wild Koala Gala which raised over $50,000 for local koala conservation projects. She also partners with Noosa and District Landcare and Tourism Noo sa’s Trees for Tourism proj ect to raise money for local koala tree planting, and has become the official mascot

for the Noosa Heads Surf Lifesaving Club and stars in ‘It’s a Ripper to be a Nipper’ – a book which has raised hundreds of dollars for the local nipper program.

Fizzi and Lili recently launched the third book in the series, Karla Discovers the Great Barrier Reef, at Bounce in Noosaville.

“We were joined by Noosa Mayor Clare Stewart, former Noosa Tourism CEO Mel anie Anderson, and Noosa and District Landcare Gen eral Manager Phil Moran.

“It was a wonderful event and all proceeds from the launch went to Noosa and District Landcare and Noosa Tourism’s Trees for Tour ism.”

The Karla books can be purchased online or from local stockists. See https:// www.karlathekoala.com.au/ for more information.

TO help assist with more council services in our hin terland region, members of Noosa Council’s Community Development team will be on hand each week to help the community get in touch with services. Visit the Co oroy Library every Tuesday from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm to have a chat and a coffee. There is no need to book and staff can help link res idents with key community and social events. They can also help link not-for-profit groups with support services to assist their volunteers. I look forward to popping in to say hi and to having a cuppa with you.

Council have put the up grade of our hinterland trails at the forefront of our agen da. Sections of Trail 5 will be closed intermittently from 14 November 2022 while work is underway to upgrade the trail, enhance the trail experience and improve connectivity. Works include re-alignment and widen ing of the trail, drainage upgrades, new wayfinding and interpretative signage.

The Mt Cooroora Lookout will remain open and can be accessed via Mountain Street. The upgrade is at the cost of $1.68 million with funding gratefully received from both the Australian and Qld governments.

Adoption of our Hous ing Strategy unanimously supported by all councillors occurred last week, which is an important step forward in the quest to better meet the shire’s social and afford able housing needs. During consultation over 84% of respondents were support ive of social and affordable housing in Noosa Shire. There was also strong sup port for residential develop ment, or development in ap propriate areas, to facilitate housing that is affordable; however this is not to be at the expense of the ‘look and feel’ of Noosa Shire.

We are certainly ‘different by nature’ and all at Council are committed to protecting the character and cultural values of the community.

Concerns were raised about height limits but the potential

addition of one storey will only be in certain city cen tres such as Noosa Junction or Noosa Business Centre with absolutely no plans in this strategy to have four storeys in Tewantin. Any planning amendments will of course go out for community consultation. Like every thing else, it is the voice of the community that matters most.

As we start the countdown to Christmas, at Council that means one very exciting thing – the return of our Christmas Convoy for the third year running. The vehi cles are polished and Santa is booked in and ready to spread Christmas cheer right across our shire. This year the Christmas Convoy will start on 5 December 2022 and run through to 8 December 2022. Please keep an eye out on our website and socials for more information, to be released shortly www.noosa.qld.gov.au. Until next month, stay safe, Clare

IT was an honour to attend the Cooroy Rag Community Grants Night, where 17 notfor-profit initiatives received funding, made possible by all of the businesses that support this 60-year-old community paper. Thank you to the Rag team and all who make this possible, with more than $1 million given back to community groups since 2000.

After years of advocacy on behalf of the Pomona Men’s Shed, it was a special mo ment to speak in Parliament on the revocation of the National Park known as Lot 1 on AP19201, which will provide security of tenure for them to continue to provide the vital support that they do to the community. Well done to all and thank you for your commitment as well pa tience on this long journey!

The community came to gether for Pink October, as it has done for many years, to spread awareness during breast cancer month. Even though sadly I was in Par liament, seeing in advance shop windows decorated in

pink and the many photos on Facebook, demonstrates what an incredible place we live in, with people who make a real difference. Well done to all involved!

In response to requests, Transport and Main Roads have advised that six vehicle activated signs will be installed along Kin Kin Road to remind everyone on the road, including heavy vehicles, to slow down and take care! The installation will take place mid to late this month and new updates on this and many other local matters, including the com mencement of stages three and four, will be posted to Noosa 360 at www.sandy bolton.com/noosa360.

Congratulations and best wishes for the future to all our Year 12 students that have graduated this month. Your tenacity in overcoming COVID-related challenges in recent years to finally achieve your goals is inspir ing. I look forward to seeing you on graduation night and please enjoy your end-ofschool celebrations safely!

This month has reaffirmed my belief in the power of community when it comes together. Remembrance Day was again a time of reflection and honouring those to whom we owe a debt of gratitude. To all and your families, we say ‘thank you for your service’ and we will never, ever forget.

As we embark on our Christ mas preparations, please remember to support our local businesses as they support us in so many ways, contributing to the ‘circular’ economy we need as part of our sustainability. A special mention to Cooroy Live Life Pharmacy, which turns the big ‘90’ this month, servicing our community since 1932. Happy Birthday!

Remember to contact our office on 07 5319 3100 or email noosa@parliament. qld.gov.au if you need assis tance or advice regarding a State Government matter. Happy ‘pre Christmasing’ and enjoy the last of our somewhat confusing spring weather.

TOURISM IN NOOSA’S COMMUNITY

TOURISM NOOSA Update from

Tourism jobs for Noosa locals

Are you looking for a new challenge, a few hours’ work, a new crew to work with, something to do over the holidays, a chance to get out of the house, or a way to help out locally? Have you considered tourism and hospitality as a career or as a way to make extra money?

It’s one of Noosa’s largest employment groups and they need your help now. To help out, we launched the Tourism Jobs in Noosa page, listing job vacancies from our member businesses.

Many restaurants, cafes, resorts, tour

businesses, beauty centres and shops are looking for staff – locals who have some spare time, want to try something different, need extra income or just want to help out are urged to consider one of the many jobs on offer.

There are jobs for housekeepers and cleaners, reservations and customer service, baristas, waiters, bartenders, kitchen hands, beauty therapists, boat crew, travel consultants, and more.

Some offer very flexible or school-friendly working hours and provide on-the-job

SILVER AWARD FOR NOOSA VISITOR CENTRE

The Noosa Visitor Information Centre in Hastings Street received the Silver Award at the recent Queensland Tourism Awards, celebrating the achievements of tourism businesses around the State.

Congratulations to our wonderful team of volunteers at the centre! They welcome thousands of visitors every month with a friendly smile and great local knowledge that goes such a long way towards helping travellers enjoy their best Noosa holiday!

If you’re looking for something new to discover in Noosa, pop into the centre (near the Noosa Heads Surf Life Saving Club) and say hi.

There’s no doubt that travellers love a Noosa holiday – our town was named third in Australian Traveller’s recent list of Top 50 Aussie holiday towns!

You can even do some Christmas shopping at the Visitor Information Centre with a great range of eco-friendly products such as Noosa water bottles, Pottery for the Planet cups, Noosa jute bags and huge organic bamboo Noosa beach towels. Or check out our eco-friendly Christmas ideas blog on www.visitnoosa.com.au

training or apprenticeships – and they pay at least award wages. You can go from surfing in the morning to serving visitors from around the world at lunch!

Locals can also help by considering hosting an international student or renting a room in your home to someone looking to move to Noosa to work. Contact home-stay organisations or keep your ears open for a worker looking for a room to rent.

See the jobs on offer at www.visitnoosa.com.au/jobs

PLASTIC FREE NOOSA

Our Plastic Free Noosa program which aims to reduce the amount of single-use plastic in Noosa’s environment won the Noosa Biosphere Award in the People and Economy Category earlier this month.

We’re helping the local community and businesses replace plastics with environmentally friendly alternatives. See www.plasticfreenoosa.org for ways you can help.

You can also support Plastic Free Noosa during November thanks to Grill’d Noosa’s ‘Local Matters’ project – pop into their burger restaurant at Shop 5/50 Hastings Street and when you receive a token with your purchase, put it into the Plastic Free Noosa jar.

2023: YEAR OF ACCESSIBLE TOURISM RECORD DOMESTIC VISITOR SPEND

In the latest data from Tourism Research Australia, the Noosa region had record overnight domestic visitor spend for a year ending June, reaching $1.04B in 2021-2022. This is the second highest on record for any period, just behind the all-time high set in the previous reporting period, year ending March 2022.

Day trippers added another $113M (+15% above year ending June 2019, although their numbers were down almost 20% in that time). This took total visitor spend to $1.15B, 5% above 2019, which also included international visitation.

FESTIVE SEASON GUIDE

If you’re looking for the best places for a special Christmas lunch or where to celebrate New Year’s Eve, check out our Noosa Festive Season Guide next week on www.visitnoosa.com.au or keep an eye on Visit Noosa on Facebook and Instagram.

There’ll also be plenty of holiday fun – where to see Santa, where to take the kids, and the best ways to enjoy the summer holiday for you or your visiting friends and relatives.

CLIMATE FRESK –LEARN ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE

Would you like to help tackle climate change but don’t have the time to become a climate scientist? In just three hours, the collaborative Climate Fresk workshop will teach you the fundamental science behind climate change and inspire you to take action.

Tourism Noosa’s Sustainability Officer

2023 will be the Year of Accessible Tourism in Queensland, helping tourism operators provide better facilities and services for people of all abilities to enjoy a holiday.

Tourism Noosa is involved in several projects around disability access, including the Department of Tourism, Innovation and Sport’s Accessible Tourism in Queensland project, and research with University of Queensland Masters students.

These projects will result in resources and support for businesses to improve their accessibility services, and improve communication to help visitors with disability plan and enjoy their holiday. We will also promote new itineraries on www.visitnoosa.com.au that highlight places for travellers with disability to visit.

About one in five Australians have a disability which is not always visible, and we look forward to making a positive change for tourism businesses and travellers.

The reporting period included six months affected by interstate border closures (June – December 2021) when Queenslanders increased their spend to a record $609M.

With the reopening of borders, interstate visitors are bouncing back. Their average spend per person ($1,729) is almost one-third higher than it was pre-COVID.

In the latest global Tourism Sentiment Index which analyses millions of online public conversations, Noosa was ranked 7th in the world – this measures and tracks the reputation of holiday spots around the world. Noosa’s best performing topics were Beaches, Restaurants and Dining, and Surfing. Tours, Hiking and Rock Climbing, and Nature Photography also scored strong results.

Amanda Pummer is the first qualified facilitator in Queensland for the internationally recognised climate change workshop Climate Fresk. We are offering Noosa locals the chance to take part in a workshop for $35 per person, with a minimum of five people and maximum of 12 per group.

The workshops are designed to make the foundation of climate science simple and fun, and help you understand the problem through cards and the creation of a collage or mural – ‘Fresk’ in French. It’s a creative and thought-provoking way to help understand the problem, build friendships and community in small groups, and inspire hope for a better future.

Email amanda@tourismnoosa.com.au to find out more or express your interest in attending a workshop.

Photography as art

What’s On

What: Photography exhibition

When: Until Wednesday 21 December

Where: Bendigo Bank Cooroy, Maple Street, Cooroy

Contact: www.pheatherine.com

A LOCAL photographer and creative arts therapist is exhibiting her clients’ photos at Cooroy Bendigo Bank until Wednesday 21 December.

Jackie Hillegers said being a photographer was always her first love and after 30 years of photo graphing weddings, families and pets, she knew she wanted to do something “outside the square” with her photography skills.

“Back in the film camera days, I could never show my photos at Camera Club as they were always purposely blurred, abstract or unexplainably quirky. I almost threw it all away when the curator at a New

Zealand art gallery told me that anyone can do photography so it is not considered art.

“Fast forward 30 years and I now work as a creative arts therapist in Tewantin. Clients are given the option of incorporating photography into their sessions and can bring their own camera, use their phone camera or use my spare SLR. Our local community is drenched in beautiful natural surroundings and time disappears when creativity and imagination ignite.”

Jackie said thanks to the support of the Bendigo Bank, she will be hosting their third photography exhibition at the Cooroy branch.

“For the first time, all 28 photographic images will be for sale and 100 per cent of the sales will go back to the artist, the youngest being just seven years of age.

“Please check out their work and support the next generation of talent.”

Jackie also runs a photog raphy mentoring business, Pheatherine.

“My business is growing each and every day with a waiting list for photogra phy mentoring throughout Australia and exciting 2023 local workshops. There is no doubt in my mind that photography is a form of art and it may have been a blessing in disguise to tell me otherwise.”

RESEARCH shows that connection and having fun together builds empathy and kindness.

Local mum of two, Robyn Simpson, has spent the last two years researching what creates kind, connected communities in order to reverse damaging social trends such as bullying which often lead to selfharm and suicide.

Robyn said these trends cost the economy billions of dollars every year and leave indelible scars.

“It’s a huge, complex problem but nothing changes unless we do something to break the cycles, so I decided I’d organise a Family

Fun Day fundraising event to support some social initiatives aimed at reversing these trends and creating kind, connected communities.

The Family Fun Day fundraising event will be held at Eumundi Sports and Showgrounds on Sunday 11 December from 9 am to 3 pm. There will be lots of fun activities – free and paid –to raise funds for a docuseries being co-produced with one of Australia’s most experienced TV directors, Bill Hughes.

“The docuseries aims to raise awareness of the root causes of bullying, and for subject matter experts to

shed light on how to disrupt the cycle.”

Highlights of the day include a colour blast obstacle course for the whole family, zorb balls, cupcake creation competition, a chill-out zone filled with fun activities, prizes, local sports clubs running mini-games and activities, food, ice-cream and coffee carts, a sausage sizzle, water fun, and much more.

Support a great cause and enjoy a fun family day out. Entry is $5 per person (0–4 years free). Tickets are available online at https:// choosethetude.com/events

Message from a Mason

FOR the past couple of months, the Cooroy Freemasons have been networking to find new members.

Mason Sam Law said here are a few things people might not know about Freemasonry.

“Freemasons had their roots in the European Middle Ages as a guild of talented builders.

The term ‘on the level’ is derived from Freemasonry and is used to define someone who is honest, and the level represents being straightforward and truthful.

There is a different hand shake for each degree: apprentice, fellowcraft, and

master, and all handshakes are based on rank.

“And there are an estimated six million Masons in the world.”

“The Masons have also included emperors, monarchs, presidents, religious figures, legendary figures in sports and entertainment, as well as scientists, inventors, and statesmen throughout history.”

Sam said there are a number of reasons one should consider starting a masonic journey.

“They could join and be part of a global historic organisation. They will learn many leadership skills through the different offices in Freemasonry

such as public speaking and business management and be able to give back to their community. There are plenty of networking opportunities and most of all they’ll have fun.”

This month, Cooroy Freemasons donated $2,400 to the Cooroy Chamber of Commerce for the community’s CCTV to help keep our town and its people safe.

“Our masonic hall is also available for hire to the local community members for meetings and classes.”

For more information about hire or membership, email cooroymasons@ gmail.com.

Mary River catchment to benefit from funding

LOCAL group, the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee, has secured more than $260,000 of Palaszczuk Government funding to improve the land and vegetation in the Mary River catchment.

Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee project officer Brad Wedlock said the funding provided much-needed targeted support to address ongoing challenges for landholders in the Mary River catchment.

“We want to engage with quite a diverse group of grazing landholders and, with that, build their awareness and their capacity to understand the challenges they’ve got and also address these challenges.

“The Munna Creek catchment is the biggest catchment in the Mary River and is one of the biggest contributors of fine sediment to the Great Sandy Strait and the Great Barrier Reef so we have been engaging with landholders to make sure they were on the front foot.

“We are also working with landholders who are changing their practices from cane farming to cattle grazing, which gives us the opportunity to ensure they are using the best practices right from the beginning.

“A big part of our work is improving landholders’ knowledge of more innovative and sustainable land management practices so they can continue to create

good jobs and economic benefit for their communi ties.” Resources Minister Scott Stewart announced the funding as part of more than $11 million in state funds for projects to improve soils and farming practices and build up native vegetation from the Gulf to Goondiwindi.

Member for Nicklin Rob Skelton said tapping into local knowledge had proven to deliver the best results for Queensland’s natural resources and our great regional lifestyle.

“I congratulate the Mary River Catchment Coordinating Committee on securing this funding which will ensure our landholders can take advantage of sustainable agricultural practices.”

What about the corgis?

IN September of 2022, throughout the world many were touched when they viewed the Queen’s corgis ‘Muick’ and ‘Sandy’ standing outside Windsor Castle ahead of Her Majesty’s coffin as it arrived for her burial at the estate.

Also nearby on ‘The

Long Walk Avenue’ was a saddled, riderless pony.

‘Emma’ was the Queen’s beloved horse and she too was there to pay tribute to her much-loved rider on the day of the funeral procession. Just what will happen to the corgis is one of the many questions that was

asked since the Queen’s death.

This is an excerpt from the tract What About the Corgis? The full tract will be available at the church stall at Christmas in Cooroy. For more information, contact Keith Fanning on 0419 008 718.

HAY there. Let’s talk about the gut and digestion.

A horse’s gut health begins with not only what they are fed but also how and when they are fed. As we are all aware, horses are designed to pretty much continuously eat roughage, and in the wild, this is mostly medi um- to low-grade grasses and plants. It is rare that a pasture-kept horse has colic because his digestive system is being kept contin uously working and moving.

Because the horse’s stomach is designed to continuously graze, it is also continuously producing digestive acids whether there is something to digest or not. The saliva the horse produces when it is eating roughage helps to buffer the stomach acids, and a horse produces nearly twice as much saliva eating hay or grass as they do when

eating grain. So it makes sense to keep hay in front of horses 24/7. If your horse does not have access to a paddock of natural growing pasture, then a low-grade hay like Rhodes grass is a good way of giving them something to chew between the morning and afternoon feeds.

Since it is hard for most of us to have our horses out in large paddocks while we are training them or compet ing with them, it is important that we keep not only their fitness and exercise going but also their gut health in good working order.

Competitions, strenuous work, transport, illness, long days competing, extreme heat and humidity and/or extended times off feed, or other major changes to routine can compromise gut health.

To keep up with the extra

energy and work that we are making our horses do while we are competing in the disciplines that we are expecting them to do, we feed them a lot more grains and mixed feeds to keep them in good condition. Sometimes this upsets the natural gut flora, causing ul cers and colic, and just like for us, antibiotics will upset the balance, causing weight loss or chronic diarrhoea. This is where probiotics and prebiotics come into play. There is a wide range of gut health products on the market now, not only for horses but also for dogs and humans alike. These products all help with gut health, acid buffering, hindgut support and toxin defence.

Perhaps keep this in mind if you are finding your horse isn’t quite right.

A tradition at Good Shep herd Lutheran College since 2009, the “Walk of Honour”

is a rite of passage for Year 12 students as they come to the conclusion of their school years.

Head of Senior Years Students Jo Foley said all students from Prep to Year 11 lined the paths to clap and cheer the Year 12s as they walked through the

“To music that was a col lation of the top songs from each year of their school life, the walk through the cam pus started and finished at the College Chapel where, in front of their families and friends, they were given blessings for their future,” Mrs Foley said.

Prep and Year 1 students gave each graduate a sun flower, a symbol of loyalty and adoration.

Good Shepherd principal Anthony Dyer said it is al ways an emotional moment when all the students and staff come out to wish them well.

“There are many celebra tions but none will capture the student experience and essence of GSLC like the warmth expressed at the Walk of Honour.

“We are confident that these students will go on to do great things and we look forward to watching their journey and wish them well as they do so,” Mr Dyer said.

‘Walk of Honour’ for
Year 12s schools

NOOSA District State High School’s Year 12 students put on their uniforms for the last time to celebrate their graduation last week.

Noosa District SHS principal Stacy Wilmore said graduation day is a significant moment and a fine example of what 13 years of schooling, caring parents and community can produce.

“Our Noosa District SHS staff could not be prouder of these young men and women. We have had the privilege, alongside their

parents, carers and community, to watch them grow, learn, strive, thrive and journey to where they are today and this is humbling, inspiring and one of the most rewarding aspects of our jobs to contribute to the future.

“We know that graduation day brings a huge sense of celebration, achievement, reflection and excitement, and some tears as we farewell our students into the next stage of their journey.”

The class of 2022 was the 59th graduating cohort of

Noosa District SHS.

“With such a talented group of young people, the future is in great hands and I know these students will make a positive difference to the world in whatever endeavour they pursue.

“On behalf of Noosa District SHS staff and the wider school community, I would like to acknowledge, congratulate and thank our class of 2022 for the legacy they have left and wish them all the best for the future,” Ms Wilmore said.

CSS prioritises mental health

COOROY State School has officially opened its Relax and Recharge Room.

The Relax and Recharge Room is a communal space for students and staff to self-regulate emotions and practise mindfulness in a safe, calm environment.

CSS senior teacher Court ney Cashen said she worked on developing and creating the space as part of a side

project throughout 2022.

“One of the goals of the Relax and Recharge Room is to provide an opportunity for teachers/staff to book ‘Mindful Moments’ for small groups or class sessions such as yoga and/or guided meditation with room to move and spread out.

“The other goal is to promote mindfulness and improve overall behaviour

by teaching and allowing students to self-regulate emotions.

“I am thrilled this space has now been created and is ready for use. This is an ex citing initiative for our school, to be actively prioritising and nurturing kids’ mental health,” Ms Cashen said.

A grand opening was held on 17 November.

Clubs compete for cup

Cooroy Horse & Pony Club and Pomona Pony Club riders.

COOROY Horse & Pony Club is celebrating its last win for 2022. The club went nose-to-nose with Pomona Pony Club for the CPC Cup.

CPC secretary Leeona

Baxter said it was a tight competition with only one point splitting the two clubs.

“But Cooroy Horse & Pony Club managed to retain the coveted cup for another

year.

“Well done to all riders and thank you Pomona Pony Club for being such good sports and keeping the tradition alive.”

Ex pee wee boxer now amateur

FORMER pee wee boxer Slade Gray has won her first title belt.

The Impact Boxing and Fitness Centre boxer won the 40 kg Queensland Challenge belt.

Coach Mark Evans said 12-year-old Slade has been boxing since she started Impact’s Pee Wee program at just five years old.

“Slade worked her way

through the Pee Wee program but at the age of 10 decided she wanted to box in an amateur event.

“Slade is a hard worker who is 100 per cent dedicated and shows such tenacity and raw talent.

“Look out for Slade in the future; she is going to do amazing things in boxing,” Mark said.

Two aces on the same day

COOROY Golf Club is celebrating two hole-in-ones.

Two members recently scored aces on the twelfth hole of the Cooroy Golf Club during a four-ball best ball with 117 players from the Cooroy members and also visitors from the Indooroopilly Golf Club.

Cooroy member Michael Loe hit his tee shot at the par three, twelfth hole and saw the ball roll down towards the flag.

“The bottom of the flag was not visible from the tee. After walking down to the green the distinctive yellow

golf ball was nowhere to be seen.”

Michael said he thought he had hit the ball through the green and into the water.

“However, I did allow myself to hope it went into the hole. My apprehension turned into relief and then elation as I celebrated with my playing partners.”

About an hour later, playing in another group, club member Carole Clancy repeated the same feat on the same hole.

Carole said she “hit a seven iron up in the air and it was a fabulous shot straight

at the pin”.

“I thought it was a bit too far and I stood on my tippy toes and watched it go in the hole. My playing partners and I all screamed and yelled.”

Cooroy Men’s club captain Matt Saunders said Cooroy Golf Club generally has a couple of hole-in-ones each year.

“However, two aces on the same hole on the same day in the Saturday Club Golf competition is very rare.

“The whole club is excited. Congratulations to both golfers.”

THE Polo & Provedores

Noosa event held at the Pomona Showgrounds on Saturday 5 November was well attended. Held in Pomona for the first time this year, the event attracted over 800 attendees with 340 of these guests in luxury corporate hospitality enclosures.

Polo & Provedores’ co-founder Aaron Flanagan said some of the best polo players from across Australia competed on the arena field. Four games were played, with team sponsor ‘Diamonds of Distinctions’ of Buderim winning the grand final and taking home the

Polo Cup.

“The much-loved polo institutions including the Divot Stomp and the Kids’, Ladies’ and Gentlemen’s dash were a hit in between chukkas. The IN Noosa Magazine Fashion on the Field attracted lots of entrants hoping to win the amazing prize: a $6,600 diamond pendant courtesy of ‘Diamonds of Distinction’, designed and made by master jeweller Adrian Schulz.

“While the premium hospitality experiences offered a completely catered culinary sensation in private marquees, general admission guests and families also got

to indulge in the finest food offerings from local produc ers and makers.

“There was face painting, a gelati van, and DJs played familiar anthem tunes inside and outside the enclosures creating an upbeat atmosphere. Some guests took a more traditional take on polo and reserved a car boot picnic, which overlooked the field.”

Aaron said they hope to grow the event and bring it back to the hinterland in 2023.

“Thank you Noosa Show Society for your support and the use of the showgrounds.”

Cooroy girls put skills to test

The Cooroy girls enjoyed the experience and look forward to mov ing up to level 3 in 2023 where they will have the opportunity to attend larger events such as the Sunshine Coast Re gional Championships.

Monthly market wrap up

Sirah Robb, Director and Principal of Wythes Real Estate

DR Nicola Powell, head analyst at Domain, recently commented on the state of the market. She highlighted that when property prices fall it can make many Australians feel uncertain about their future property journey as the unknown outlook weighs on their minds: Will Australia enter a recession? When will the RBA stop hiking the cash rate? How far will prices fall? Should I buy/sell now

or wait?

This is a timely reminder that property moves through upswings and downturns. We can garner lessons from previous price cycles to help shape our understanding of what could lie ahead.

So, what can we learn from previous price cycles?

Domain’s analysis of almost three decades of Australia’s combined capital house price cycles reveals that:

• House prices do not go through wild boom and bust phases; we tend to see a period of gains (quite often

surging), followed by a slight decline or flatlined pricing.

• On average, an upswing sees house prices rise 32.7% from the point of price trough to peak, spanning 2.75 years.

• On average, a downturn sees house prices decline 3.0% from the point of price peak to trough, spanning 0.75 years.

• On average, downturns have been just over onequarter the duration of the preceding upswing.

Domain also identified five key insights into the

This light and bright modern home offers openplan living areas with high

ceilings and air-conditioning. Plus, a fireplace and beautiful timber-look floors with stunning 5 m stackable doors flowing to the front verandah. Great space for entertaining and taking in the country views.

A well-appointed stylish kitchen with modern cooking appliances, including a

The main bedroom, with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite, has access to the large back verandah. As well there are two goodsize bedrooms with built-in wardrobes, plus a study or fourth bedroom, close to the

changing property market:

1. Unit price growth is outperforming house price growth.

2. Downturns are shorter and less severe.

3. Interest rates are one of many factors to influence prices.

4. Inflation could spark housing supply pressure.

5. Rising rents will make purchasing more attractive.

Domain suggests this evidence supports the argument that it is not necessarily timing the market that is important–

it is the time spent in the market that counts. Anecdotally in our market, we are seeing this translate to owners who have owned their property for enough time to have benefitted from the recent price peak realising their gains by selling now. Buyers who understand time in the market vs timing the market are being savvy and taking action now to secure their dream home or investment, setting themselves up to realise their gains when the next surge arrives.

The insulated low-set three-bedroom home is situated in an elevated position on the 10.4-acre lot, offering views over the surrounding country. Inside the home, you are met with a modern finish with a mixture of neutral tones that bring highlight to the timber vaulted ceilings. The kitchen offers plenty of storage with overhead cupboards,

concealed tea and coffee areas, and an island bench which offers plenty of room for preparation and can also be used as a breakfast bar.

Staying true to the country feel, the kitchen not only has a free-standing stove and oven, but also a functional Waterford combustion stove.

With a large covered entertainment area (that is also tiled), this home is perfect for entertaining!

The main bedroom offers a walk-in robe, and the remaining two have built-in cupboards. Although other

areas are tiled, the bedrooms are fitted with plush carpet.

Outside of the home, the property features two stables and a tack room/tool shed, as well as four dams. Storage for the vehicles and the toys is not a problem with two 2-bay carports and an additional shed.

The property has established fruit trees including banana, mango, custard apple, paw paw, macadamia and various citrus. Water is maintained with two 5,000-gallon tanks and one 2,500-gallon tank.

OFFERING a rare combination of dual living (perfect for intergenerational living, long-stay guests or additional income), acreage and horse infrastructure in a prime location.

Located at the entrance to the property is the remarkable ‘Jacaranda Cottage’. The cottage offers bou tique accommodation for short-stay Eumundi Market visitors or private spaces for extended family and friends. Entry to the cottage is via the kitchen which features large gloss tiles that flow throughout the ground floor, impressive timber benchtops and statement overhead cupboards for additional storage. Cooking is provided by a free-standing 900 mm Smeg cooker

with a gas cooktop and electric oven. There is also a dishwasher for added convenience.

Beyond the kitchen you are greeted by the lounge and living area featuring high ceilings and reverse-cycle air-conditioning. The lower level also includes a modern bathroom with a matching timber top vanity (providing plenty of storage), a walk-in shower and a toilet.

Upstairs leads to the bedroom which offers the best view from the property, looking out to Cooroy Mountain.

The spacious family home provides open-plan living with plenty of doors and windows to enjoy the surrounding views over the

property. Easy-maintenance tiles cover the flooring in the kitchen, hallway and living areas; and included with the sale is a custom-fit large, carpeted mat as pictured. The addition of reverse-cycle air-conditioning will keep you and the family comfortable year-round.

The property is currently fenced into two paddocks with ‘equi mesh’ providing safe, durable and long-lasting fencing designed for horses or other hoofed animals. A 9 x 6 m shed includes room for storage with a mezzanine level and a tack room and stable. The stable is rubber floored and walled and opens into a section that can easily be separated for use as a day yard.
