CELEBRATING PHOTOGRAPHY

FORORD

FOReword

We are daily confronted with photography. Visual impressions that bombard us with messages. Photos that want to tell us news, pictures that want to sell, images that will evoke memories, images that want to tell stories, pictures that want to titillate your aesthetic sense and images that want to provoke. Documentary, portrait, advertising, fashion and art - in newspapers, magazines, advertising pillars, banners, shops, at home on the shelf, the internet, the front page of a book, the music collection ... there are pictures everywhere.

Julie Klitbo & Rasmus Ranum Founding Directors

The Metro Exhibition

Today photo is one of the expressions that characterize our media image, public spaces, contemporary art and everyday life the most. One of the objectives of Copenhagen Photo Festival is to sharpen our awareness of what underlies the photographs that surround us, the thoughts that shape them and what they tell about us. When Copenhagen Photo Festival kicks off for the second year, in June 2011, it is again with an ambitious and diverse program of exhibitions, events and artist talks. All Metro trains will be “galleries in motion”, with more than 30 different exhibitions. A tour of Vesterbro featuring a Photo Walk where you can follow the pictures in shop windows and end up in Photo City of Carlsberg, which becomes an inferno of exhibits spread over 4,000 sqm. When you visit a museum or gallery, you will be presented with art photography in the world elite. At Nørrebro, Nørrebrogade is transformed into a long gallery where all the shops show images of everyday rituals at Nørrebro. In Øksnehallen press photographers have moved in again with their touching picture stories. We repeat the success of the photo competition, which is again held in conjunction with the Copenhagen Museum and The Wall. All this and much more - we are delighted to welcome you to Copenhagen Photo Festival 2011! Enjoy. Julie Klitbo & Rasmus Ranum Founding Directors

Photo City Photo City is the heart and epicenter of the festival. In June, Copenhagen Photo Festival will move into an exhibition area of more than 4000 sqm at the Carlsberg premises, that will be transformed into a living Photo City with the festival info center, artist talks, photo walks and exhibitions with both established and emerging Danish and international photographers. In Bryghuset, Ny Tap, Halmlageret and Slottet, young talent and established photographers will be exposed in group shows and exhibit their works in spectacular surroundings. For ten days, we will take over the historic buildings at Carlsberg with a variety of exhibitions and create a unique setting for photographic experiences. Jakob Carlsen From the series Outcast 8

Satellite Exhibitions Copenhagen Photo Festival aims at a high artistic level in wishing to create a platform for photography in Denmark, which focuses on the role of photography in contemporary art. We are once again this year proud to announce a festival program with several galleries, museums and exhibition places presenting art photography in various contexts. The Independent Denmark has a great potential of photographic talent and Copenhagen Photo Festival wants to emphasize this talent. The festival applauds the initiative behind the many independent exhibitions all over the city. This portrays the vivacious and commited photo scene in Denmark today and presents a festival program with exhibitions passionately communicating photography. This year the program has a special focus on young talent with photo schools presenting their graduation shows during the festival. Urban Space This year Copenhagen Photo Festival literally takes over the urban space. With the ambition to reach as many people as possible, the festival moves into the streets. The central street Nørrebrogade will be transformed into a gallery street when the exhibition 2200 Hverdagsritualer displays the pictures of Nørrebro life in shop windows as captured by Copenhageners. In another part of the city a Photo Walk will take its audience through the cityscape of Vesterbro along the photo gallery displayed in windows along the route that leads to the Photo City at Carlsberg. Finally the Copenhagen underground will turn into an impressive exhibition space when Copenhagen Photo Festival takes over all the Metro trains and lets photographers create each their own underground universe.
