Foreword
In only three years Copenhagen Photo Festival has succeeded in creating a Danish event with international participation and attention. Last year’s festival attracted more than 50,000 active visitors of all ages and from all over the world. I am looking forward to experiencing the works of the many Danish and international photographers, who are taking part in Copenhagen Photo Festival this year. Photography is not only one of the most active art forms. It has also become part of social media and a new way of communicating with our surroundings. Copenhagen Photo Festival thus embraces the Zeitgeist and unites art and social culture. During the festival photography and photographic culture will take over the urban space of Copenhagen and museums and galleries will present an array of photographic exhibitions. We will meet photography at new and surprising venues – in shop windows, in ad frames all over town and on the Wall at Frederiksberg – photography will for the duration of the festival become part of our daily whereabouts in the city. As Minister for Culture I am excited about the international ambitions of the festival and the ability to think outside the box. This year the festival has, among other projects, put photography in the Nordic countries into focus. In this year’s program you will find the seminar Nordic Now, where photographers, scholars and critics from Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden and Iceland will participate with lectures, artist talks and roundtable discussions about what is happening on the photographic scene in the Nordic countries and what characterizes Nordic photography. In 2012, The Danish Union of Press Photographers celebrates its 100 year anniversary. That will be marked at Copenhagen Photo Festival with numerous exhibitions displaying the best of Danish press photography. In the past couple of years the possibilities of the freedom of the press has been subject to heated debates. This anniversary is a postitive event because it sharpens our attention to the importance of freedom of press. In my perspective the festival has created a fine balance between play and professional exchange. There is both room for experimenting as well as for the aesthetically well composed photography. For the established professional photographer who works with advanced equipment and for the new photographer who explores his surroundings with a mobile camera. And that is how it should be. The landmark of the festival lies in this ability to engage broadly without underprioritizing the passion for great photography.
Derfor: Gå på opdagelse i festivalen. Der er i den grad noget for øjet!
Uffe Elbæk Kulturminister
Therefore: Go explore the festival. There is indeed something to behold!
Uffe Elbæk Minister for Culture

Photo City is the heart and epicenter of the festival. In June, Copenhagen Photo Festival will move into an exhibition area of more than 5000 sqm at the Carlsberg premises that will be transformed into a living Photo City with the festival info center, artist talks, photo walks and exhibitions with both established and emerging Danish and international photographers. In Bryghuset, Ny Tap, Halmlageret and Slottet, young talent and established photographers will be exposed in group shows and exhibit their works in spectacular surroundings. For ten days, we will take over the historic buildings at Carlsberg with a variety of exhibitions and create a unique setting for photographic experiences.

Denmark has a great potential of photographic talent and Copenhagen Photo Festival wants to emphasize this talent. The festival applauds the initiative behind the many independent exhibitions all over the city. This portrays the vivacious and commited photo scene in Denmark today and presents a festival program with exhibitions passionately communicating photography. This year the program has a special focus on young talent with photo schools presenting their graduation shows during the festival.

This year Copenhagen Photo Festival literally takes over the urban space of the city. With the ambition to reach as many people as possible, the festival moves into the streets. At Frederiksberg a Photo Walk will take its audience through the cityscape of Gl. Kongevej along the photo gallery displayed in windows along the route that leads to Photo City at Carlsberg. The Danish Union of Press Photographers hosts its 100 year anniversary exhibition at Nytorv, the photo journalists from Personal Projects wrap Kongens Nytorv in mansize photos and in frames all over town, you will find the City Space Art Project with 130 unique images. Finally the Copenhagen underground will be turned into an impressive exhibition space when Copenhagen Photo Festival takes over the Metro.
