Copenhagen Photo Festival hylder fotografiet for femte år i træk
Ét billede siger mere end tusinde ord.

Copenhagen Photo Festival celebrates photography for the fifth successive year
A picture is worth a thousand words. A classic phrase that we’ve all heard numerous times, but which has never been more relevant than today. Photography is ubiquitous. We increasingly use it for communication. Photography has no nationality, and so, we can communicate across barriers of language and culture. It speaks to us, it fascinates us. Photography opens us to each other – we readily share our private moments, self-portraits, thoughts and opinions through pictures in all kinds of social media. Today, everyone has become a photographer and readily displays his proudest moments – sometimes several times a day. Selfies, Instagram, Snapchat, Street-style, blogs, Hipstamatic, Pinterest ... they are all recent forms of expression that have gradually been integrated at several levels of our lives and appeal to people of almost all ages. But where does that development take us? Despite all the advantages of digitalisation, it is suggested by the debate that we have become less critical and too careless. As photographers, and as viewers. Digital photography allows us to snap and rush on instead of enjoying the moment and trying to document it in the best way. As photographers, we were more careful and critical, when we were using film with only 24 pictures in a roll, which had to last for the entire vacation. Usually, the pictures were developed and put into an album to be shown to a chosen few. And as recipients, we are sometimes too quick to interpret and categorise. With the amount of photographs we come across each day, our
4
eyes are in the habit of just glancing, rather than exploring. Therefore, we are too hasty to label a picture with our own words, instead of looking one more time and considering what was really said. Manipulation is the third dimension. We are no longer dealing with snapshots – but with 30 versions of the moment, from which we choose our favourite. The photos are manipulated – a bench in the background is removed if it blemishes the composition, and two lovers are merged together to create headlines. Maybe it’s old-fashioned and naive, but the heartfelt sincerity of old pictures (which we often return to) comes, among other things, from the fact that they documented things the way they were – naked and unadorned. You did not have the luxury of producing 20 variations of the subject in order to choose the right angle and delete the others. Neither were the old-fashioned developed pictures deleted continuously – like you do with the digital ones. In other words: at a personal level, the world today is often presented as more “perfect” than it really is ... There is a multitude of aesthetical and moving experiences waiting for you out there In Photo City, you can, among other things, experience Joachim Ladefoged’s very personal project After My Time [Tiden efter min tid], which is also published in book form by Gyldendal later this year. In the same venue, we show Astrid Kruse Jensen’s series, Within the Landscape, which has been flown in directly from its exhibition at the Sven-Harry’s Art Museum in Stockholm. And, speaking of flying, we are proud to present Josef Hoflehner’s exhibition, Jet Airliner, which was last shown at Paris Photo 2013. In a totally different style, Photo City presents the exhibition Picture the Music – a large, interactive multi-simultaneous photo exhibition that can be found in eight different places around Denmark. Furthermore, parts of it will be found in metro trains during the festival, when we, as is our tradition, move into the Copenhagen Metro with “rolling photographs” in 30 trains. The Meatpacking District, [Kødbyen], offers several exhibitions of photo journalism and fine-art photography. Drop by and see, for instance, Personal Projects in Øksnehallen, Fotografisk Center’s Heli Rekula exhibition in Building 55, and Peter Funch in V1 Gallery. The gallery and museum scene is well represented with exhibitions spread all over Copenhagen and the south of Sweden, with forays into the rest of Denmark – so don’t hesitate! And then, there are all the other things – the very things that make the festival a festival: A multitude of pop-up exhibitions, artist talks, the DR K cinema in Photo City, which also temporarily houses the newspaper Politiken’s photo editors, who exhibit the pictures of the day, photo documentaries in Cinemateket, photo auction at Bruun Rasmussen’s, workshops, large-size pictures as part of Cool Construction [Byens Hegn], and much, much else in our densely packed anniversary program. Two years ago, Copenhagen Photo Festival presented a jubilee award to ‘a man with the courage of his opinions on photography’. Earlier this year, the Danish photo scene lost a keen analyst and a well-respected human being whose imprint will be felt for generations. In the spirit of Per Folkver and to celebrate the five-year anniversary of the Copenhagen Photo Festival, we invite you to pay homage to and explore photography – from both sides of the camera. We look forward to seeing you. Enjoy yourselves! Julie Navne Klitbo & Rasmus Ranum Founders

Men du valgte mig. Men Baby, du burde have lugtet lunten. Baby, I’m sorry You shone so beautifully the first time I saw you, Baby. The man in the bar said you were top of the pops, more sophisticated than anyone before you, expensive, but worth it all. Your skin was shiny and smooth, your scent virginal, and just admit it: your lens sent a twinkle in my direction. You should have taken one of those smashing advertising photographers; he could have introduced you to parties, celebrities, and the big money. But you chose me. You were fascinated by my idealism and the dream of adventure, you said. We should accomplish something bigger, I whispered to you. Find ourselves, feel ourselves, for only by being true to ourselves can we be true to others. Only by photographing the things that touch us can we get others to be touched. And that was our goal: to tell important stories from the world, in a way that really touched people. To build bridges between the amazing people we met and the thousands of visitors that flocked to Øksnehallen. You gobbled up my words, but remember, Baby, I warned you, too. I warned you against airs and graces, for the world must be experienced at eye level, even when you meet the most vulnerable of the Earth. You looked at me trustfully, and even on our first date, you let me cut off your fancy logo strap, paint over your fancy logos. Where we were going, it was much more fancy to be discreet than to smell of money, I said. You just laughed. But Baby, you should have smelled the rat. I put a fixed 35mm on you, meaning we couldn’t get close just by zooming. And I brought lots of batteries, for it takes time to get to the bottom, I explained. Yes, even when I brought my ex (‘In case you break down on the way, darling’), you didn’t complain. Your body’s well-worn now, Baby. Worn out, with mud in the cracks, dents everywhere, and subtropical mould underneath your display. Smells and screams that were never photographed, but will never go away. But Baby, keep your focus, don’t regret. Remember all those we met on our way; the fishermen and the swingers, the lovers, the fighters, the lives we met in Bangladesh and the Amazon, Burma and Ballerup. And look what we have created, Baby. The stories are our children; that’s why we call them Personal Projects. And Øksnehallen is our common home now, Baby. Look, how they thrive in there, living their own lives now. We did it, my darling. Look at the old man shedding a tear, look at the teenager tweeting one of our pictures. This is bigger than both of us now, Baby. Bigger than photography. Photography in a Wide Range Copenhagen Photo Festival is here to stay. The last four years have proven that. To me, the festival’s chief justification is that it is a festival in the true sense of the word, i.e. a celebration of photography. Copenhagen Photo Festival is a popular event where a lot of people who may not otherwise be frequent visitors to exhibitions, suddenly arrive on the scene and stroll through all the exhibitions, with the program in hand. At the Fotografisk Center, we experience a significant increase in visitors during the festival. Not only does this mean a larger number of guests, but also other kinds of guests. Furthermore, Copenhagen Photo Festival is a city event. This is apparent from the fact that the festival – even though many exhibitions can be found in and around Photo City – is spread all over town in galleries, museums and showrooms. At the same time, it emerges in various places where you wouldn’t normally find or expect to find fine-art photography. This could be in shop windows in Nørrebrogade, as was the case in 2011 with the exhibition project 2200 Everyday Rituals [2200 Hverdagsritualer], which subsequently was broadened to the rest of the country with the travelling exhibition Danish Everyday Rituals [Danske hverdagsritualer], or Hipstagram FTW in 2013, a competition and exhibition based on application photography. While the festival is rooted in the local community, it also has an international perspective and includes more and more photographers from all over the world. Copenhagen Photo Festival presents the whole range of photography: Exhibitions of amateur or student pictures are shown alongside exhibitions of professional and fine art photography. There is room for everything here: photography in all its diversity. It is a place for exploring, encountering new things, being inspired and learning. This wide scope is the festival’s very raison d’être. Kristine Kern Director, Fotografisk Center

What a party! Men her stritter festivalens anarkistiske side imod. Peter Lav & Jens Erdman Rasmussen Peter Lav Gallery

What a party! It’s in the name, really. Copenhagen Photo Festival – a popular party for photography in all its forms and aspects. Appealing to everybody and being accessible and popular is the very raison d’être of the festival, and its greatest quality. Being a photographer is a profession, and like other professions, it takes experience, expertise and knowledge. Presenting photography to the public requires an equal degree of experience, expertise and knowledge. Deep down, those of us who present photography all wish that it will be exactly our knowledge and visions that are presented, just as the exhibiting photographers all wish to control all details, to obtain the perfect result. But the anarchic aspect of the festival revolts at this. The festival reminds us that everybody is a photographer, busily documenting, interpreting and telling stories, and that all narratives are valid. The very moment we think we’ve figured out what we are looking at, another visual narrative appears right next to us and demands attention. The festival presents photography as a mirror of life and the world as an untamed common property defying any attempt at control. There is simply more to photography and the world than what each of us sees. From the beginning, the galleries of Copenhagen have been happy and proud to be part of this party. In contrast to the anarchic cacophony of photographic expressions that characterise Photo City and the numerous manifestations in highways and byways, the gallery setting facilitates the immersion and calm which photography also requires. Within our own four walls we are the ones who are in control, which is the reason why galleries are sometimes seen as elitist cathedrals that do not welcome ordinary people – unless we are talking about well-to-do connoisseurs looking for expensive works for their collections. Nothing could be further from the truth. We enjoy inviting the whole world in – not only during the festival, but all year round. We do not expect everybody who pops in to leave with a valuable photographic masterpiece under their arm, but that is not the point either. For us, the festival is a much-appreciated opportunity to present photography as a sublime art form to everybody who walks in. It is a pleasure to open the gallery space to everybody and display photography in all its artistic complexity. But it is also wonderful to have our own expertise challenged through this meeting. Elitist or not, we would like to be that contrast to the popular that invites reflection on photography. We enjoy being the slow dance on the photo festival’s party playlist – the intimate moment in the middle of the chaos of the dance floor. Peter Lav & Jens Erdman Rasmussen Peter Lav Gallery

Alt i alt Nordens største fotobegivenhed. Glæd jer til Copenhagen Photo Festival 2014. Enjoy Copenhagen Photo Festival’s five-year anniversary 2014 Photography is undoubtedly one of the most accessible media of art. Because of its democratic form and the advance of digital photographic technique, expressing oneself in pictures becomes more and more common. Even though we all take pictures, it is still important to be presented with the good picture. Copenhagen Photo Festival delivers on both accounts, the broad approach to photography as well as exquisite quality. In its 5th year, the festival is larger and more pervasive than ever before. Actually, it would take an effort not to see pictures from the festival. They are everywhere in Copenhagen and environs, even in the south of Sweden. Almost everything is free and open to everybody. Copenhagen Photo Festival consists of exhibitions chosen by the festival itself, and accompanying exhibitions. All in all, the greatest photo event in the Northern Countries. You can look forward to Copenhagen Photo Festival 2014. Mayor Carl Christian Ebbesen 12

THE GALLERY SCENE Copenhagen Photo Festival aims at a high artistic level and focuses again this year on the role of photography in contemporary art. We are once again proud to announce a festival program in collaboration with a large number of galleries and exhibition sites in Copenhagen, Sweden and around the rest of the country. Look forward to photography that delights, touches, shocks and amazes and moves at the boundary of photographic genres and style patterns. Once again this year the contemporary art scene shows a great commitment in photography with exhibitions that cross traditional approaches and highlight smooth transitions between reality and fiction. The gallery scene represents a network of established galleries such as Martin Asbæk and Peter Lav and younger initiatives such as Avlskarl Gallery and the artist-run venue KONTORprojects. This year we are happy to say welcome on board to Banja Rathnov Galleri & Kunsthandel that are presenting the exhibition LAND with leading landscape photographers and visual artists from Denmark, Sweden, UK, USA and Italy.

THE INDEPENDENT Denmark has a great potential of photographic talent. Copenhagen Photo Festival wants to bring all the players in the photo scene into the light, and the independent platforms prove how dynamic and engaging the photo scene in Denmark is today. This year the festival hosts student exhibitions, among others Polish National Film School in Lodz and Östra Grevie Folkhögskola in Malmø. This year we have a strong program of project-based exhibitions that stands out from the more established photo scene. At Café Le Rouge, one may experience boys create photo journalism from a hip hop perspective, while the photo collective Norse Creative combines international photography with workshops, lectures and live music in Homeless Gallery and Projektrum VERA will each day turn out a picture that disappears after 24 hours.
