Her most important role was being a mother and grandmother. She loved getting together with her family to play dominos. She’ll be sorely missed by all.

Arizona Fire Fighters caution public: fraudulent fundraising phone calls happening statewide PHOENIX – The Professional Fire Fighters of Arizona, the state’s largest fire fighters’ organization, has issued a warning to Arizona consumers: Beware of telephone solicitors pretending to raise money for fire fighters’ charities. “These scam phone calls happen frequently and recently we have had reports of an uptick in fake charity solicitations,” said Bryan Jeffries, the president of the PFFA. “No reputable fire fighters organization in the state is using phone solicitors to raise money. If you get a phone call asking for a donation on behalf of an Arizona fire fighters’ group, it’s a fraud.” Consumers who get such calls are encouraged to take notes of the content of the call and the caller’s phone number, then contact the Arizona Attorney General’s

Office either by phone or online. Consumer complaints can be filed at https://www.azag.gov/complaints/ consumer. Recent fake calls have included solicitors reportedly citing a group known as the “Fire Fighter Support Association.” According to Jeffries: “To my knowledge, that group has done nothing to support fire fighters in Arizona, nor do they have any affiliation with our organizations either at the state or local level. Every dollar donated to a fake group like this is a dollar siphoned away from legitimate charitable causes. That’s an absolute shame.” The PFFA represents more than 7,000 fire fighters across the state of Arizona. here were bells on the hill But, I never heard them ringing No, I never heard them at all Till there was you. Meredith Wilson (Music Man) And, now…it never stops. A gentle ringing in the ears can conjure up such delightful thoughts. Yet, when it becomes incessant, it can drive one batty. It tends to be a little more tolerable if one knows of its origin…such as exposure to loud gun fire in the service of one’s country or the oft unregistered or forgotten immersions into rock-n-roll. However, all too often it appears mysteriously, first being noticed in the quiet of night. Then the mind tunes into it and can’t seem to escape it with any more success than one has with a clever little ditty that plays over and over in the head. Tinnitus is as much of a mystery as to how it starts and permeates one’s existence as it is to resolve. It is most commonly considered to be caused be trauma of some sort, though there are over 260 pharmaceutical drugs known to cause this irritation. It effects almost twenty percent of the population. There are tiny, delicate hairs in the inner ear that vibrate with sound and transmit that motion to the brain via nerves. These hairs can get bent or broken from trauma and consequently transmit random sounds, which is what tinnitus is. Common everyday causes can include consistent exposure to loud noises (for example, as experienced with ear buds for musical devices), stiffening of the bones that transmit sound through the middle ear, other age related issues and, sometimes, just simple wax buildup. Less common causes of tinnitus can include a viral infection such as Meniere’s disease, TMJ disorders, head or neck injuries, muscle spasms, eustachian tube dysfunctions and tumors like acoustic neuromas. It is useful to identify the source of the

unwanted sound in order to effectively address it. Tools at hand to help with this phenomenon include covering up the sound with other sounds (white noise), avoiding known irritants such as loud noises, caffeine, nicotine and other drugs, stress management, reduction of alcohol consumption that dilates the blood vessels or simply removal of impacted wax or fine tuning one’s hearing aid. Drugs that have shown some benefit include some anti-depressants and antianxiety meds and other nerve retardants. Alternative methods that have been effective include acupuncture, hypnosis, the herb Ginkgo biloba, melatonin and B vitamins and zinc. Don’t underestimate the value of background noise to help at night. Sleep deprivation can be a serious intrusion on one’s health. Dr. Michael Miles’ Clinic is located at 15601 N. retail, mining and government customers” “Pinal County has some economic lessons for Gila County” On Friday we learned that one person can throw that all away. I’m speaking of our President. On Friday, President Trump announced that he will enact tariffs on Mexico in order to punish them for the influx of illegal immigration. First of all, the only people who will be hurt by these tariffs will be you and me by spending more on fruits and vegetables. Next, there are a lot of large projects slated to come to Pinal County in the next year such as Lucid Motors and Nikola Motors that depend upon favorable trade with Mexico. Our proximity to our neighbors to the south is one of the reasons they chose Pinal County for their multi-billion dollar enterprises that will also supply our residents with high paying jobs. Like a bad target shooter, the President is

going to be hitting Americans (particularly Pinal County residents) hard by this tariff, meanwhile Mexico will feel little, if no effect. In the end, there will still be illegal immigration. Even the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Senators Sinema and McSally are against this bad idea. If Pinal County’s Economic Development engine is stopped by these tariffs and other actions of the President, I can guarantee you it will be extremely difficult, if not impossible to get it started again. We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to become a major player in the international markets, but with the swoop of one signature, we can see that go away forever. I am asking Governor Doug Ducey to stand against these tariffs and stand with Arizonans. Don’t let small minded ideas take away our shot at greatness. /s/ Pete Rios Supervisor, District 1

Prescribed fire planned for Aravaipa Canyon area the week of June 3; project will improve grasslands on the south rim SAFFORD, Ariz. – The Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Safford Field Office and Gila District Fire Management Office will conduct a multiple day prescribed burn in the Aravaipa Canyon area, pending appropriate weather and seasonal conditions, within the week of June 3, 2019. The South Rim Burn will cover approximately 15,726 acres of BLM and private land in the Aravaipa Canyon Ecosystem Management Area located 50 miles west of Safford. Most of the prescribed area lies within Pinal County.

Prescribed fires are intended to mimic natural fire frequency and intensity. They improve the health of the land by stimulating growth of desirable grasses, reducing invasive plants and managing fuel loads so that natural fires are less destructive. Large prescribed burns have been conducted in the Aravaipa Canyon Ecosystem Management Area since 1998. The burn is being coordinated with the Arizona Game and Fish Department and The Nature Conservancy Aravaipa Canyon Continued on page 15

Anheuser-Busch delivers emergency drinking water to volunteer firefighters nationwide; deliveries to help departments prepare for upcoming wildfire season Last week, Anheuser-Busch began to deliver approximately 300,000 cans of emergency drinking water to 26 of the country’s volunteer fire departments, in partnership with the National Volunteer Fire Council (NVFC), to provide critical hydration to first responders in advance of wildfire season. The Copper Corridor had two departments who were the recipients of this delivery: Pinal Rural Fire & Medical District and Hayden Fire Department. Anheuser-Busch announced the expansion of its 30-year-old emergency drinking water program in April, and has committed to donating one million cans of clean drinking water in support of volunteer fire departments in 2019. “Eighty-three percent of the nation’s fire departments, which protect our communities from hazards of all kinds, are all- or mostly-volunteer,” said Steve Hirsch, Chair of the NVFC. “Funding for needed resources is a constant challenge for many of these departments, making this donation even more important as it

directly supports the health and safety of our firefighters and the communities they serve.” To officially kick off the expanded program, the brewer has worked closely with the NVFC to identify and select some of the most vulnerable markets across the country to receive this initial water delivery to help prepare for the upcoming wildfire season. “As the country faces more natural disasters, like wildfires, preparation plays a major role in ensuring fire departments across the country have the resources they need to protect their friends and neighbors,” said Adam Warrington, Vice President of Corporate Social Responsibility at Anheuser-Busch. “In the same way we have utilized our production strengths to can water throughout the year to support our communities at a moment’s notice, these water donations – in advance of wildfire season – will provide critical hydration to help our nation’s volunteer firefighters stand ready for our communities in times of need.”

Cases of canned water were delivered to the Pinal Rural Fire and Medical District last Thursday. The partial delivery included 7 pallets stacked 6 feet high with cans of water. The math for this delivery worked out to 16,464 cans of water. The final count, when all deliveries have been made, will total 51,744 cans of water. Ian Whittaker | Pinal Rural

The program will also implement a rapidresponse approach to support volunteer departments nationwide actively fighting wildfires throughout the year. Starting in June, volunteer fire departments across the U.S. will be able to request AnheuserBusch emergency drinking water through the NVFC for their immediate or upcoming wildfire response needs. Additional information will be available at www.nvfc. org/water. Through their local wholesaler partners, and in connection with the NVFC, Anheuser-Busch began delivering emergency drinking water to the following volunteer fire departments last week week: • Arizona: Pinal Rural Fire & Medical District (Mammoth, AZ) • Arizona: Hayden Volunteer Fire Department (Hayden, AZ) • California: Mi Wuk Sugar Pine Fire Protection District (Twain Harte, CA) • California: Suisun City Firefighters Association Inc. Every year, the brewer periodically pauses beer production to can emergency drinking water, to be ready to lend a helping hand during natural disasters and other crises. The USEPA and ADEQ require Arizona Water Company to provide the following information: Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some constituents. The presence of constituents does not necessarily indicate that water poses a health risk. More information about constituents and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). Some people may be more vulnerable to constituents in drinking water than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. USEPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by Cryptosporidium and other microbial constituents are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). The sources of drinking water (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dissolves naturally-occurring minerals and, in some cases, radiological material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence of animals or from human activity. Constituents that may be present in source water include:  Microbials, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife.  Inorganics, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining, or farming.  Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runoff, and residential uses.  Organics, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are byproducts of industrial processes and petroleum production. They can also come from gas stations, urban stormwater runoff, and septic systems.  Radiological material, which can be naturally-occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities.

In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, USEPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain constituents in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for constituents in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. Arizona Water Company is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by flushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the USEPA's Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/lead.
