A 200 seat Stokehouse pop-up restaurant will oper ate on the St Kilda foreshore site until Mother’s Day (11 May) this year.
Our creative city We have a rich history of creativity, as Harold Mitchell explains on page five, and we want to help creative and knowledge industries to thrive in the future. Council is embarking on a range of place-based initiatives that will enhance the existing vibrancy and strengths of the villages that make up our city. The prompt steps to enable the Stokehouse pop-up is an example of action that supports and involves local people, promotes employment and makes Port Phillip great. We are continuing to advocate for early infrastructure in Fishermans Bend, particularly ‘Fishermans Crossing’ – our name for the tram, walk and bike bridge that will connect the city to the bay by extending Collins Street over the Yarra. On Carlisle Street, we are working with traders, residents and community groups to positively tackle safety issues. A graffiti blitz is underway, while outdoor seats, street bins, paving and drainage have all been upgraded. Meanwhile, on the Port Melbourne Waterfront, Council is teaming with business and community to provide more information about local events, points of interest and historical facts to passengers arriving at Station Pier. WATCH Please share your ideas with us about how to make our city even more vibrant. MAYOR CR AMANDA STEVENS

Help with heritage questions Did you know that up to 80 per cent of our municipality is covered by heritage controls? Heritage controls aim to retain, conserve and enhance the historic built environment by ensuring that inappropriate demolition, modifications, additions or designs do not occur.
Check before you make changes It is very important to check with the Statutory Planning Department to see if you need planning permission to make any changes to your property. This includes minor works such as exterior painting, a new front fence, changes to roofs and guttering, adding solar panels, driveways, etc. You may make changes to your property, but any change must conserve the heritage aspects of the building and be sensitive, sympathetic and respectful of the building and the surrounding character. In some heritage areas, such as Garden City, you will need to consider specific guidelines for any development work you propose on your property.
Free heritage advisory service Council provides a free heritage advisory service to owners of residential and commercial historic buildings, including detailed guidelines to assist you to understand the planning process. The heritage advisory service can help with all heritage matters, including: • colour schemes • fences • restoration of altered facades and verandas • additions and alterations • repairs and structural problems • applying for relevant permits • sourcing materials or tradespeople • gardens and driveways. Assistance focuses on building exteriors, but consultation on significant interior changes is also available. Creative City Port Phillip can rightly claim to be a powerhouse of creativity. Latest figures show that local creative industries generate $3.6 billion annually and directly employ about 12,700 people.*
Good people follow good people Harold Mitchell took on the world and built Australia’s biggest advertising agency, Aegis, in South Melbourne, just a stone’s throw from the market. ‘In business, good people follow good people, and South Melbourne is the place to be. It’s friendly, sophisticated, creative,’ says Harold. ‘In 1977, South Melbourne was the absolute heart of advertising. It was amazing. Armstrong Studios was pumping out hits, Campaign Palace was the unbeatable agency and Brian Sweeney was, without doubt, the best researcher in the business. And EON, the first FM station, was there.
Last year ‘It was and is an amazing creative area. Harold Mitchell AC It’s got magic. It’s not too intense like stepped down from Aegis, the CBD and it doesn’t have the the agency he founded. loneliness of St Kilda Road. The agency still employs ‘We took on the world from about 500 people in South Melbourne, and now others South Melbourne. are doing it too.’
Google eTown win for Port Phillip Port Phillip was the Victorian winner in the Google eTown awards, which rewards cities, suburbs and towns where local small businesses make the best use of the internet. Council’s business development programs and online portal for small businesses contributed to the win.

Creative industries in a creative city Analysis of recent economic data by Council reveals that creative industries account for one-third of local economic activity and generate $3.6 billion in value added to the local economy of Port Phillip. Local creative industries generate 12,700 jobs and contribute an additional 14,100 jobs through indirect employment. Creative industries supply 15 per cent of all employment in Port Phillip. That is higher than Melbourne (which is less than 5 per cent) and other inner city municipalities (9 per cent). Port Phillip accounts for nearly 13 per cent of Victorian creative industry jobs despite accounting for less than 4 per cent of total Victorian employment.
The changing face of creativity The digital revolution has changed the scope of local creative employment. The latest data quantifies the importance of software and interactive content development to local creative industries. There are over 5,000 direct p li il h P t local jobs in software and interactive r Po content, representing over can rightly $1.8 billion in value. From global to loc al, a creative hub takes shape In the old Red Tulip Easter egg factory in Fennell Street, boardsports and streetwear company Globe International has livened up an industrial corner of Port Melbourne. The Hill brothers – Peter, Stephen and current CEO Matt – founded Globe in Melbourne in 1984. The company now designs, manufactures and distributes their signature footwear, clothing and skateboards around the world. After moving around a number of locations, the brothers settled on the Port Melbourne factory four years ago for its old style brick facade, huge warehousing area and proximity to the city. The only things missing were a great short black and a beer after work. So they went about getting that set up too. In one corner of the Fennell Street block the boys from the Salford Lads Club brew coffee and bake eggs, while around the corner in Bertie Street, Matilda Bay has a bar and working craft brewery. Later additions mean you can get a trim and shave at Uncle Rocco’s Barber Shop and have your car e r a ts n e v e tuned at 01 Motorsports. Regular
