Fitzroy Street’s selection as the home for Australia’s first Pride Centre is great news for locals and visitors. How wonderful that the annual Pride March will pass by it each year. Council will be working with traders and community to maximise the activation the centre will bring to one of our most colourful strips.
informed by unprecedented amounts of community feedback. Council always appreciates receiving thoughts and views and we are encouraging community comments on the draft before 19 May. The plan, to be adopted in June, sets out priority actions that will enrich our community and tackle future challenges.
Another cause for local pride is that the 2018 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay will pass through St Kilda, Middle Park, Albert Park and South Melbourne next year. It’s a great symbol of active participation and we urge locals to nominate baton bearers at www.gc2018.com/qbr before 15 May 2017.
There’s plenty of ways you can stay active in winter: local sports, MAP 57 winter garden at the St Kilda Triangle or surprising events at our libraries. You can even take a dip with the Port Melbourne Icebergs every Saturday at 8 am behind the Life Saving Club.
We are also proud to release our draft Council Plan 2017-27, which has been
So let’s take the plunge this winter, whether it’s passing on your ideas, nominating a baton bearer or braving the chilly depths.

Draft Council Plan out now Thank you to the 2,000+ community members who helped shape the draft Council Plan 2017-27. The draft plan establishes Council’s strategic directions for the next 10 years, with a four year focus on priority initiatives. The draft plan, including the 2017/18 Budget, is now available for public comment.
To find out more visit our website or come to a drop-in session on Saturday 6 May at Port Melbourne Town Hall or Tuesday 9 May at St Kilda Town Hall. To have your say on the Council Plan 9209 6777 haveyoursay.portphillip.vic.gov.au
At the centre of MAP 57 will be the Magic Mirror Spiegeltent, a stunning antique European tent that will host a variety of events, including international headline show Blanc de Blanc. Organiser Michelle Buxton says the location inspired her to create MAP 57. It is Michelle’s team that has presented Australia’s biggest independent live arts carnival, The Garden of Unearthly Delights, for the past 17 years in Adelaide. ‘Take one triangle of inner city seaside land, fill it with savvy small bars, luscious food stalls, an antique Spiegeltent full of stunning shows, carnival rides, sparkling lights and roaring fires and you have the warmth and wonder of MAP 57 - The Winter Garden Melbourne.’ map57.com.au

Centre of Pride
Pride history of Fitzroy Street Not only has Fitzroy Street hosted the Pride March since it started in 1996, but the street itself and St Kilda more generally have also long been home to one of Melbourne’s most dynamic gay and lesbian communities. In the 1970s, venues such as Pokey’s drew big crowds and helped put St Kilda on the alternative map.
Tenth anniversary Pride March down Fitzroy Street in 2006. Pic: The Age
After an exhaustive selection process, the Victorian Pride Centre Board has unanimously selected Fitzroy Street as the location for Australia’s first Pride Centre. Divercity spoke to board chair Jude Munro about the next steps. ‘The Pride Centre will be the permanent home of six LGBTI organisations in Victoria, including the nationally significant Australian Lesbian and Gay Archives, Victorian AIDS Council, JOY FM, SWITCHBOARD, Melbourne Queer Film Festival, MidSumma and MINUS18. ‘More than 70 other LGBTI groups, such as the Gay and Lesbian Choir, sports groups and transgender support groups, are also expected to use the centre. ‘It will be a place for the celebration of LGBTI history and culture, and a great location for events and exhibitions. ‘The building will have an iconic design created by a competition that will be announced by the board in coming months. There will be extensive consultation with the LGBTI and broader community on the final design. ‘The board believes the Pride Centre will be a catalyst for the revitalisation of
Fitzroy Street. It will attract hundreds of staff, volunteers and visitors on a daily basis, plus many tourists as part of an international network of pride centres. ‘We are grateful to the City of Port Phillip for the welcome and for the permanent home.’
Council backs the community Council will contribute up to $13 million to establishing the centre, to support the LGBTI community and accelerate the revitalisation of Fitzroy Street.
In the 1980s, St Kilda was frontline in the response to HIV/AIDS. The first Positive Living Centre, established with the support of St Kilda Council, Elton John and Julian Cleary no less, was located in Acland Street. In the 1990s, when Alternative Lifestyle Organisation (ALSO) and Midsumma wanted to add a parade to the established Gay Day program, they chose Fitzroy Street as the route because the Council was so supportive.
Council expects the centre to deliver an additional $46 million of socioeconomic benefits over the next 20 years and make Fitzroy Street an even more vibrant destination than it currently is. ‘Of all Victorian municipalities, St Kilda has the largest number of cohabitating same-sex couples.’ Mayor Cr Bernadene Voss
