Welcome to the 2011 Autumn edition of the JCAAA Newsletter. We are delighted to have Mandy Ireland back in the team after a year of maternity leave. Mandy returns to JCAAA part time as the Arts Officer and Jess Edwards continues with us as the Recreation Officer. There are some great events and programs happening over the next few months. Social Impact are running some fantastic workshops on relationships, dating and social skills and there are some great new sports programs to keep you fit over these cooler months. The holidays are approaching fast so make sure you register soon to secure your place. Rachel Edward is also new to JCAAA and is working with the Stitched Up Drama Program. The Stitched Up crew are doing a big project with MusoMagic this year. Watch this space for updates! Bianca

Events Social, relationship and dating skills for people with disability Social Impact is a unique program that teaches adults 20 years and over with intellectual disability, useful relationship skills. Participants can then practise these skills and build confidence at fun, supportive events. Sport and Fitness All Abilities Footy (AFL) Do you want to learn football skills and make friends in a fun and supportive environment? Recreational football is a non-contact, modified version of AFL and is for both males and females who want to learn new skills, play footy, make friends and most of all have fun! This weekly program will be starting in May and JCAAA would love to hear from people aged 10 to 25 who would like to participate. Sport and Fitness Highett Youth Club Inclusive Adult Gymnastics Develop strength and flexibility at an adult gymnastics class, designed for all ages and abilities with gymnastics skills assisting in balance and coordination. No prior gymnastics experience is necessary. A weekly program will be developed based on level of interest from those wanting to attend the weekday program. Mobi - Chair (Beach Accessible Wheelchair) Recently, Bayside City Council successfully ran several Mobi-Chair ‘Come and Try’ days at Ricketts Point, Beaumaris. The Mobi-Chair is a high quality, amphibious rolling beach chair that provides seamless transition from boardwalk to beach to water. Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR) Victoria received a City of Port Phillip Community Grant for the ’Active By the Bay’ program. As a result, there are a range of activities happening throughout the JCAAA region.

Other Social Cycling (Slow to medium pace) Margaret and her adult daughter who has an intellectual disability/autism, are looking for like-minded people to cycle with. They will cycle along the Yarra trail twice a month starting in April. Meeting at Federation Square and then going down to the river, participants will be welcome to bring their own bikes and helmets or hire them from either the blue bike share system or Rentabike (which has tandem bikes). They are looking for other adults with disabilities, their families, friends and/or carers, to cycle with. Unfortunately, they will not be able to provide carers or interpreters, so if you require one you will need to bring someone with you. Please note that this is not an association, rather individuals looking for other individuals to cycle with as a social recreational activity. They are happy to go at a slow pace and stop for breaks.
