Winter welcome from JCAAA Introducing Emily Mercer Emily is JCAAA’s new Enhancing Vacation Care Project Officer. This is a new role that will be focusing upon managing and developing the existing Enhancing Vacation Care Program. Emily has previously worked within the disability sector, primarily working with stroke survivors and people with brain injuries, as well as working within the community services sector. Emily is committed to social justice, equity and community development.

And also….David Connolly

David is JCAAA’s new Sports Development Officer; replacing Rosie Thomas until January 2013. Most recently David has been Coach of the Street Soccer team at North Melbourne. Street Soccer is a community program of the Big Issue which uses sport to promote social inclusion and personal change for marginalised and disadvantaged people. David is passionate about using sport as a tool for social development and is looking forward to creating more opportunities for people with disabilities to participate in sport. 3


Enhancing Vacation Care Enhancing Vacation Care Program (EVCP) JCAAA’s EVCP works in partnership with local school holiday program providers to support children and teenagers with mild to moderate disabilities to attend local mainstream school holiday programs. To be eligible for the program, participants must live within the Cities of Bayside, Glen Eira, Port Phillip or Stonnington. Current holiday programs available through EVCP include: Bayside X‐Treme Teen, Stonnington Teenage Rampage, Port Phillip Vacation Care, Bayside Vacation Care, Wesley College, Hamerkaz Shelanu/Lamdeni, Yeshivah College, and Chabad House. Holiday Programs Holiday Arts for Adults

Experience a variety of visual and performing arts. In July activities will include acrylic painting, sculpture, filming and editing, drama and music recording. Workshops are facilitated by artists and materials are provided. MSAC Teenage Recreation Program

Art Programs SnapShot Photography

SnapShot Photography classes continue to inspire. Come along and discover all of the photographic masterpieces you can create. Go on outings, learn to use your camera, edit your photos and have heaps of fun! Performing Arts at Circus Oz

The ever popular Circus Oz classes continue! From clowning, drama, hula hoops, character, rope walking and dance there is always something new to try and fun for all! Social and Recreation Yoga Moves

YOGA MOVES HAS A NEW TIME AND DAY! The program will now run on a Saturday morning 11am to 12 noon. An introductory yoga program for adults. Get out, meet new people and have some fun! Hype is a social recreation program for 14 to 18 year olds with a mild to moderate disability. In 2012 participants have been to the St Kilda Festival, Sand Sculptures in Frankston and Queen Vic Market, to name a few. There are vacancies in this program.

Social and Recreation Stitched Up

Stitched Up is a fun and engaging drama program that helps participants boost confidence and create new friendships. This program is facilitated by a professional drama teacher who teaches a range of drama techniques. Community Kitchen

This is a social, educational program for adults aged 18 years and over with a disability. Learn how to plan a menu, budget for shopping and cook your favourite recipes! Sport and Fitness Beaumaris Sharks All Abilities AFL

Recreational football is a non‐contact, modified version of AFL and is for both males and females who want to learn new skills, train, play modified footy, make friends and most of all have fun! Beaumaris Sharks ran a program in 2011 and are planning on involving participants in non playing roles within the club in 2012. Basketball ‐ McKinnon Super Star Cougars

This program has smashed all expectations, growing to two courts and entering multiple teams in the all ability tournaments. New players are always welcome to join! Develop your basketball skills and become a member of a winning team! Sport and Fitness Swimming for the Vision impaired of all ages

If you are vision impaired and interested in learning to swim, improve your swimming style, or simply to enjoy the freedom of splashing around in lovely warm water we would like to hear from you. The environment at this small pool provides a feeling of safety; the water is shallow and warm, and we provide one‐on‐one support in the water. Our fully qualified swimming teachers offer support to all ages and are specialists with children and teenagers. Support is provided from the building entrance to the change rooms, to the pool and back again, as well as in the pool. The sessions will last approximately 45 minutes. Gecko’s Special Needs Assistance Program (SNAP) offers a unique and inclusive environment. Participants feel a sense of belonging and are given opportunities to participate fully and equally in the fitness/gym program. This program is as popular as ever and will include the annual fun day with the Richmond Eagles All Abilities team. Learn soccer skills in a fun, friendly, safe and non‐competitive environment. These weekly programs combine a range of fun indoor sports all in the one location. Activities include basketball, volleyball, squash and table tennis. Sport and Fitness Fishing for All Abilities

This program gives people of all abilities the opportunity to try fishing in a supportive environment. Participants will need to be dressed for the conditions (warm clothes, sturdy shoes etc.) Groups welcome.

Swim 4 All

Swim 4 All is a program designed to provide children and adults with disabilities the opportunity to learn to swim with qualified, disability trained instructors. Classes are half an hour in duration and tailored to each participant’s needs. The classes are run from a quiet facility minimising distractions and excess noise. Sport and Fitness Snorkelling

Mike Letch at the Disabled Divers Association is running indoor pool snorkelling sessions so that divers are ready for the weekly summer snorkelling sessions at Ricketts Point Marine Sanctuary, Beaumaris. Inclusive Sports Club Volunteering

Are you looking for a fun and sporty way to spend a few hours each Saturday? The Moorabbin Kangaroos Football Club (based in Hampton) are seeking the assistance of an energetic and reliable volunteer to assist with a number of duties including Water Person and Scoreboard. The volunteer will be matched with a club member who will help them to learn their role. This is a great way to be involved in your local sporting community. JCAAA Participant Profile Rosy Lunam How old are you? 17 years old

What JCAAA programs do you participate in and which do you like the most? I have been to the Hype program and Stitched Up drama program. I love going to Hype because we go on all sorts of outings, like Queen Victorian Markets, Sand Sculptures and we have done PIZZA making too, which I loved!

What is your favourite activity? I love painting and doing creative arts and craft work. I love singing and dancing too.

Who is your hero and why? My hero’s are the two support worker from the Hype program, Rose and Gemma. We have a great laugh together and they are really fun to be around.

What is your favourite weekend activity? I love going out to shop and eat and love going to the movies with friends. I also love going to Southland shopping centre on the weekends, its heaps of fun!

What do you want to do when you finish school? I would love to be an art teacher and help out other people who want to learn arts and crafts. I love creating things and would like to teach and show people how its done.

“Reflections” Exhibition September 2012

JCAAA has been successful in securing the exhibition space in the Bayside Council Offices in Sandringham, known as Artrium. Artrium showcases art by local artists and provides an opportunity to mount a professional exhibition with assistance and advice from the council. Titled “Reflections”, the exhibition will present chosen pieces produced by participants of JCAAA’s Holiday Arts program in 2012. The opening night will be on Tuesday 4 September 6pm-8pm, at the Bayside Council Offices in Royal Parade, Sandringham.
