A Tri-Cities treble
A trio of Tri-Cities soccer players had their hands — or more specifically, their feet — in on what’s being billed as a momentous win for the UBC soccer program. The Thunderbirds easily defeated the Simon Fraser University Clan 3-0 in a nonconference game Saturday night, in a contest that pitted the defending CIS champs against the NCAA Division II semifinalists. Some of the pieces instrumental to that win have roots in the Tri-Cities, as Coquitlam natives Milad Mehrabi and Paul Clerc both tallied in the win, while Port Moody native Richard Meister collected the clean sheet in the UBC nets. UBC held the edge both on the scoresheet and statistically, as the T-Birds earned 10 corner kicks to the Clan’s two, while also outshooting SFU 16-9. “It’s a terrific win, it’s a huge win against
a good opponent and that’s a major positive for this group going forward,” UBC head coach Mike Mosher said in a press release. “I thought it was a very solid performance from our group. We didn’t give up many chances through the course of the game. We kept a clean sheet so that’s a positive as well.” Mehrabi scored what proved to be the game winner in the 20th minute, after taking a cross from Port Moody’s Navid Mashinchi near the top of the penalty area and depositing the 1-0 goal. Clerc, who patrols UBC’s back line, added to the lead in the 47th minute after heading home a Bryan Fong volley to make it 2-0. Mashinchi then assisted on the final tally, a cross that Vancouver native Niall Cousens connected with to seal the 3-0 win. “I thought Milad really worked hard and had a strong game,” Mosher said.
Ducks get it done at u-16s
Three players from the Coquitlam Ducks volleyball program have hit provincial paydirt. Setter Hayley Meynard helped B.C. Blue team capture under-16 gold at the recently-held Western Elite Volleyball Championships in
Regina, Sask. Meynard was joined on the championship side by her Riverside Secondary coach Alym Makhani, while fellow Rapids teammates Taryn Toscani and Miranda Dinwoodie suited up for the fifth-place B.C. Red team.
B.C. Blue defeated Alberta Blue 3-1 in the championship final, after downing B.C. Red and Alberta White in the playoff bracket. B.C. Red, on the other hand, claimed wins over Saskatchewan and Manitoba in finishing fifth.
