Parks, Recreation & Culture in Coquitlam Tell Us Your Story! A Mayor Richard Stewart & Council Councillor Brent Asmundson Councillor Neal Nicholson Councillor Mae Reid Councillor Craig Hodge Councillor Terry O’Neill Councillor Lou Sekora Councillor Chris Wilson Councillor Bonita Zarrillo

s summer comes to a close, we head back to work, to school and back to a regular routine. The onset of fall brings the changing of the leaves, and the chance to reflect. It’s the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and evaluate where you want to go. Our staff in Parks, Recreation & Culture has been doing just that with their Draft Master Plan, Our Story. This plan will help the City to plan and prioritize its facility, service delivery and parkland needs into the future. Since the last plan was adopted in 1998, Coquitlam has grown and changed dramatically—we need to adapt to these new demands, evolve with our changing community and plan for the future to meet our residents’ needs. Our Story is a snapshot of the Parks, Recreation & Culture services we currently provide within Coquitlam. And, we need your help. What do you want to see from Coquitlam Parks, Recreation & Culture? This is your community, neighbourhood and City—tell us your story. Visit coquitlam.ca/prcmasterplan and review the plan and provide feedback by completing the online community survey. You can also sign up to receive news updates about the project such as open houses, workshops and focus groups over the next six to nine months that will allow you to learn more and offer feedback. We’ve shared our story; now please tell us your story.

Richard Stewart Mayor

PARKS Explore the beauty of Coquitlam’s Trails Pick up a Coquitlam Trail Guide today! Fall is the best time to explore Coquitlam’s extensive trail system. With over 90 kilometers including a portion of the Trans Canada Trail spanning from coast to coast, trail hiking is one of the most requested recreation activities. Our trails can be enjoyed by everyone whether it’s for fitness, pleasure or viewing wildlife and nature opportunities. Coquitlam’s new pocket trail map is a convenient guide providing information on the location of trails, entry points, trail surfaces, and wheelchair accessibility. Pick up your Coquitlam Trails pocket map today at City Hall or a Coquitlam Recreation facility.

Adopt-A-Trail Program The Adopt-A-Trail Program offers volunteer opportunities for residents to contribute to the beauty of our community’s trail system. Businesses, community organizations, schools, families or individuals can all become adopters of specific trails. Our Adopt-a-Trail volunteers: • Keep the trail clean from litter • Remove graffiti • Report trail hazards, vandalism or unusual activity For more information, contact us at adoptatrail@coquitlam.ca or call us at 604-927-6926.

BAD SEED: Weed Out Invasive Plants Invasive plants harm the environment! Invasive plants kill native plants and destroy Coquitlam’s beautiful natural habitat. We need your help to stop the introduction and spread of garden plants that can be harmful to people, animals and ecosystems. They spread aggressively and take over the natural environment. They push out native plants, including endangered species, and destroy habitat for fish, birds and other wildlife. Quite simply, they are Bad Seeds. For more information on invasive plants or if you would like to volunteer for invasive plant removal events in Coquitlam, visit coquitlam.ca/badseed or email parkswork@coquitlam.ca. 8
