IMPORTANT TESTING INFORMATION If your student has an IEP (ESE students) or a 504 Plan, please be aware that the accommodations provided in the classroom and on state tests such as the FCAT are not automatically provided for College Board or ACT testing. Applications for accommodations must be made to the test companies with the assistance of designated school personnel. At Eastside High, Mrs. Andrea Coe in the Guidance Department assists with this task. The College Board tests are: PSAT, AP, SAT and Subject Tests The ACT tests are: the ACT and the PLAN Decisions about accommodations are made by the companies based on recent documentation of the disability, test data supporting the need for accommodations and timely submission of the application. The web

sites of the two companies contain information about the application process and time lines. Please note that College Board accommodation applications which would apply to the October PSAT must be complete and submitted by mid-August. Since the guidance department works part-time during the summer, in order to assure a timely decision you should begin the process in May. This facilitates getting a decision by the beginning of the next school year. Contact Mrs. Coe in early May for information or assistance. Bravo, Estudiantes de Español I! Señora Sedlacek’s Spanish I class recently enacted a “Quinceañera,” or 15th birthday celebration, common to several Latin American countries, complete with invitations, formal party attire, themed decorations, speeches, punch, cake and other refreshments. All present practiced “buenos modales,” or good manners, as well as various conversation topics in Spanish.

Lady Ram Weightlifting Finishes Season in Style The Lady Ram Weightlifting team held its awards night at the Pomodoro Cafe. A good time was had by all. In attendance were Principal Jeff Charbonnet, Principal, Assistant Athletic Director for Eligibility and Compliance Natalie Strappy, Counselor/Coach Latroy Strappy and our UF Athletic Staff led by Claire Graves. The ladies produced 19 scholar athletes. Top competition honors went to Vivian Bwenge and Alicia Frazer. There was special recognition to our seniors: Muna Oli 1yr., Celeste Rousseau 1yr.,Paige Wegener 1yr., Amelia Cowles 3rd yr., Ashley Hopkins 3rd yr. and Amy Dailey 4th yr. Coach Chris Cummings and Assistant Coach “Tina” Bassi wish to thank everyone involved for making this such an enjoyable year. www.sbac.edu/~ehs/ehs.htm

As students mingled with name tags on showing their relationship to the Quinceañera, they introduced themselves, asked questions about where the others lived, who the relatives were, what they liked to do and compared opinions about the refreshments and favorite activities, all to receive the highest speaking points possible for the day. Señora Haedo’s Spanish V students assisted by chatting with the Spanish I students and listening for correct comments. T h e class finished out this culminating activity by reading a Spanish selection about Quinceañeras and answering comprehension questions; then on a final day, they wrote a lengthy description of the celebration in Spanish without notes. Señora Sedlacek said, “I was so impressed with their sophistication at the party and by their language level.” Page 5

Why take ART at Eastside High School? The Eastside Art Department is introducing Computer Art, Digital Imaging, a new art class for IB 9th grade students. This class includes an introduction to digital photography, digital drawing and painting with Adobe Photoshop Elements as well as the integration of traditional drawing and painting techniques with computer imaging. Sign up for Computer Art on your course list for next year. We are also offering the traditional art class, Art 1, Drawing and Painting. This introduction to drawing and painting also includes several projects with computer imaging and mixed media. Sign up for Art 1 on your course list for next year. Because it’s fun. You’ll make cool looking stuff! But did you know…in our ART CLASSES students learn important thinking skills to use in ALL other classes, like: Persistence from working on projects over time, persevering through obstacles Connecting class projects and art from diverse peoples of the world - past and present Observing carefully for accurate representation, breaking free from stereotypes and preconceived ideas Innovation using imagery to develop concepts and solve problems Assessing which creative approach is best suited to communicate specific information Expressing artistic growth through a portfolio of work encompassing a variety of subjects and media In EHS art classes students learn vital thinking skills of seeing, imagining, and inventing. Students with these skills will develop ideas we need for the future. Albert Einstein said his most important, productive thinking was done by “playing with pictures” in his imagination. Honors and Opportunities Art students at Eastside display work at the Thomas Center gallery, the Harn museum, and Alachua County public administration buildings. Their work is viewed by the entire school during the annual Eastside art show. In February Satchel’s restaurant features a display of artwork by EHS artists. Art students are eligible for membership in National Art Honors Society. Senior members can apply for a special four-year scholarship to Pratt’s School of Art and Design in New York and wear NAHS honor cords and tassel at graduation. Membership in NAHS well recognized by colleges and universities. EHS Art department offers classes in Advanced Placement (AP) Art, IB (International Baccalaureate) Art, and senior Portfolio Art. The Business of Art We’re moving into the conceptual age with art and design structuring the future. It’s estimated that in 15 years the creative sector will be the largest economy in the world. Jobs in art and design have increased 43 percent in the past 10 years. Annual art sales in the USA exceed $10 billion. About 1.25 million Americans work in the visual arts. The economic impact of art and design exceeds that of sports worldwide. This year the Ringling School of Art and Design introduced a BA in the business of art. But what if I’m not a great artist… As with all classes, it’s the job of your teachers to help you learn skills, concepts, techniques, and information. Students entering art classes at EHS are not expected to be artists. Students work to develop their artistic knowledge, skills, creativity, and imagination as art teachers guide and assist them.
