10 THINKING AHEAD CHANGES FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY & NEIGHBOURHOOD MANAGEMENT We congratulated Laura Shaw & Allan Withpetersen in their new roles; Laura as Neighbourhood Manager and Allan as Community Safety Officer. We are currently recruiting for two Neighbourhood Wardens. A Safer Corby Strategy has been produced that outlines our principles alongside the activities and work that underpin them. The document has been presented to the Crime & Disorder Committee and will be seen by the One Corby Policy Committee for approval in June. The images shown on this page are from our team meeting in April during consideration of a framework for Community Engagement. A community map will be placed in the office.

ASB LEGISLATION COMMUNITY SAFETY

Since the introduction of the Anti-Social Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014, Corby Borough Council’s Community Safety Team have successfully used the powers in the legislation to tackle a wide range of anti-social and nuisance behaviour affecting the quality of life of residents in the borough.

The legislation allows us the use of a wide range of powers from warning letters, through to court orders giving us the power to close a property where ongoing anti-social behaviour is being reported. Community Safety are the first point of contact at the Council for residents to report antisocial behaviour. You can contact us on 01536 464603 or by emailing community.safety@corby.gov.uk.

VEHICLE REMOVALS NEIGHBOURHOOD WARDENS

Vehicles that have no tax, no MOT or no insurance should not be parked on the public highway, even if they are registered with the DVLA as SORN (Statutory Off Road Notice). Unused vehicles take up much-needed parking spaces (parking being a locally identified priority), and damaged vehicles can become a hazard or become the source of arson. Neighbourhood Wardens continue to arrange removal of such vehicles in response to resident’s concerns.

Our colleagues in Corby Neighbourhood Policing Team, Corby Borough Council Street Scene and Northants Fire & Rescue also arrange removal of any abandoned vehicles. You too can report any vehicles suspected to be abandoned to ELVIS (End of Life Vehicle Impound Scheme) by calling 0845 6121 999.

GRASS DAMAGE NEIGHBOURHOOD CARETAKERS

Neighbourhood Caretakers worked hard to install three bollards to stop drivers using the grassed area as a shortcut between Weymouth Close and Cottingham Road. Carrying out the work themselves and digging by hand to minimize hazards such as avoiding the live junction box underground by the lamp post saved the council a considerable amount of money as opposed to contractors carrying out the work. We'd like to remind residents not to damage the grass with vehicles!

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE POLICE VIA NEIGHBOURHOOD ALERT Crime prevention tips: 1) Keep doors and windows secure. Front and back doors should be kept locked at all times – even when you are home. 2) If you open windows for air, make sure they are closed before you go out or leave the room. 3) Keep keys and other valuables out of sight and reach of cat flaps, letterboxes and downstairs doors and windows. 4) Don’t forget garages, sheds and outbuildings – make sure they are locked and secure too. Make sure you don’t leave garden tools or ladders lying about in the garden as burglars could use these to break into your home

5) Make sure your home is visible from the street by keeping bushes and fences low at the front. 6) Avoid sharing holiday plans on social media as this could tip off potential burglars about an empty property. 7) If you’re going on holiday, remember to cancel deliveries such as milk or newspapers. 8) Make sure your home looks like someone is living in it. Use automatic timer-switches to turn your lights on when it gets dark. 9) If you are going away, ensure your burglar alarm is set. BURGLARIES TARGETING GOLD AND VALUABLES NORTHAMPTONSHIRE POLICE

ASK FOR ANGELA COMMUNITY SAFETY

Ask for Angela was launched on Valentines' Day 14th February, also to coincide with Sexual Violence Awareness Week. It is a simple phrase that people feeling unsafe on a date can use to alert bar staff who can call a taxi or help them leave discreetly. Posters and promotional items were distributed in venues along with general safety messages. At the launch below (left to right): Councillor Mary Butcher, Leanne Buckingham: Northants Rape Crisis, Pubwatch Chair Mick Willey, Neighbourhood Manager Laura Shaw, Wayne Wagner: Street Pastors, Community Safety Officer Olivia Stinson and PC Chris Vickers.

RECENT EVENTS

THE GREAT BRITISH SPRING CLEAN NEIGHBOURHOOD MANAGEMENT Another successful event as part of ongoing measures to tackle poor litter perception across the borough. • 14 clean-up events conducted. • Approx 2000 children participating in various school education sessions on the wider anti-social impact of litter. • 13 hours of dog fouling/litter enforcement patrols conducted. 2 FPN’s issued for dog fouling. • 274 bags of waste collected.

A massive thank you and sincere appreciation to everyone who took part; the response and support from council departments, partners, businesses and local communities was fantastic. The Big PIC (Pride in Corby) will take place during the week of 24th September with similar anti-litter events.

BEEP BEEP ROAD SAFETY SESSIONS

Beep Beep is a campaign from the national road safety charity Brake with Corby sessions lead by Rural Pride Officer Suzanne Preston. Two workshops took place with approximately 150 children from Corby Primary Academy PreSchool/Reception and Little Stanion Primary Pre-School/Reception. A talk about Road Safety & using the Green Cross Code was followed up by a hand painting session emphasizing the message to ‘hold hands with your grown up’ when crossing the road. The children also received an exciting visit from PC Brad Wilson & PC Mark Walker with an interactive look around their police vehicle.

LAUNCH OF PROJECT ACE TARGETING ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACE’s) are stressful events that occur in childhood that directly affect a child or affect the environment in which they live. Research has found that ACEs increase individuals’ risks of developing healthharming behaviours and that reducing these in future generations can help to reduce levels of early sex, unintended teen pregnancy, smoking, binge drinking, substance misuse, incarceration, violence perpetration/victimisation and poor diet. The purpose of the project is to look at early interventions and education to try to reduce levels in Corby and the surrounding villages.

CORBY OUTDOORS FESTIVAL

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT WALKING HAPPY 10TH ANNIVERSARY! Corby Outdoors Festival is in its 10th annual year will be taking place from 28 May – 3 June this year. A wider range of outdoor activities will be offered, including cycling and running. This year will also be particularly exciting as we are also teaming up with the borough ’s hugely successful Cycle Fest event, which is in its 3rd year, to offer even more great opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors across the borough.

The project was piloted in March with sessions on the health effects of drugs on the body in partnership with PCSO Steve Coles discussing Fearless and New Psychoactive Substances. These were conducted at Lodge Park Academy and Little Stanion Primary School. Future sessions are set to look at the health effects of smoking and healthy eating.

PEN GREEN SAFETY SESSIONS PROJECT ACE The Community Safety and Neighbourhood Management Teams are running sessions in Pen Green’s Family Room so as to engage with residents local to the area and discuss cyber/personal safety, road safety and how to be healthy. Sessions are running in April and May.

The Festival will kick off with a free Family Fun Day on Monday 28 May at East Carlton Country Park, 12noon – 4pm organised by the Festival’s beneficiary charity Lakelands Day Care Hospice. There will be archery, bouncy castles, face painting, children’s rides, a dog show and much more! For those who want more of an adrenaline rush, the Lakelands Firewalk event is Friday 31 May. Visit www.lakelandshospice.org.uk or the Lakelands facebook page for more information. For the full walk and events programme as well as regular updates please visit www.corbywalkingfestival.org.uk or contact Suzanne Preston, Corby Borough Council’s Rural Pride Officer on 01536 463177 or email Suzanne.Preston@corby.gov.uk
