Soften up the stone, concrete, or wood bench with colorful outdoor cushions and pillows enjoying the beautiful NY/CT weather. But with sitting areas comes…you guessed it, seating. That seating—most often in the form of table and chair sets— can introduce a lot of necessary maintenance in an otherwise low maintenance outdoor space. A trip to a local garden center or a browsing session online will reveal many options for outdoor furniture in the market place today. not a new one—features like seat walls have been popular for many years now—the popularity and demand has really increased as of late. So what is it that’s causing built-in seating to find its way into the designs of so many outdoor living spaces in our area? For one, seat walls and built-in seat benches can be a great solution for adding additional seating to areas that are limited on space. Depending on the overall design, these seating choices can mean the difference of being able to fit a lifestyle feature such as an outdoor kitchen or a fire pit in the outdoor living space. Pretty big impact, right? In many situations, a wall that is necessary for the project’s stability can be modified slightly to provide a

large amount of extra seating. And for those that like to entertain but have a small space to do it in, those extra seats mean more happy guests and more time outdoors. Built-in seating also aligns well with the continued growing demand for design solutions and products with limited or no maintenance. In today’s fast paced world, it’s either easy to use or own, or it’s out. Here in the Northeast, we treat our beloved outdoor living spaces to the unpleasant experience of winter weather. With snow, ice, and temperatures that dive down into the single digits being the norm for a few months out of every 12, it’s important for NY/CT residents to consider the effects these conditions can have on elements of an outdoor room. built-in seating made from concrete, stone, and Brazilian hardwoods like Ipe, much of the maintenance time of either covering traditional furniture pieces or packing and storing them, is reduced or eliminated. Perhaps the best part of these built-in seating options, however, is that even with all the added benefits they bring to a space, there’s no need to sacrifice style. That, my friend, is a win-win. So be sure to finish off your seat walls and boulder chairs with colorful outdoor pillows—there’s nothing quite like the hard, cold surface of stone softened and warmed by fabric. Drop some landscape lighting fixtures in or around the stone or wood benches, add some hidden compartments for easy storage of the pillows and entertaining supplies, and curl up with a book to enjoy the connection to nature that only a seat made from wood and stone can bring.

There are quite a few great publications and online resources available for the gardening enthusiast looking to expand his or her knowledge of the latest and greatest in the horticulture world. But as our readers already know, this magazine is quite different. Outdoor Home is an outdoor living design and lifestyle magazine—more focused on creating and enjoying amazing outdoor spaces that extend the home beyond the interior walls. That said, we of course recognize that plantings are a huge part of creating truly stylish and livable outdoor rooms. So in honor of kicking off the growing season here in the

Northeast, we decided to catch up with some of our area’s best landscape design pros to get an insider’s look at some of the best plants for 2015. We asked the designers a very tough to narrow downquestion—name your three favorite perennials. After all, what better way to get great, reliable plant picks than going directly to the talented folks that design and build beautiful landscapes right here in the NY/CT area? “This plant is what I call the Poor Man’s Lavender,” says Rick King, Project Manager at Hoffman Landscapes in Wilton, CT. “True Lavender is difficult to grow in our zones 5 and 6, so Nepeta is a great substitute.” Pete Nilsestuen, owner of Landworx of NY in Goshen, NY, explains “Catmint provides very nice color during the summer with long bloom times.” There are many varieties of Catmint available, making this perennial very versatile in the design of outdoor spaces. It is also considered deer resistant.

< SIBERIAN IRIS (IRIS SIBIRICA) A very distinct perennial, Iris is often identified by its grassy, spikey foliage. “Iris comes in many different varieties, but I prefer the Siberian Iris,” explains Hoffman Landscape’s Rick King. Rick likes the wide variety of available colors including blue, purple, white, pink, and yellow. Also a favorite of Brian Higley, landscape architect in Cold Spring, NY, he explains that the foliage of the Siberian Iris is “punk and spikey all season and combines well with many other plants. I also find them way tougher and versatile than descriptions indicate.”

The talented folks at Austin Ganim Landscape Design in Fairfield, CT admit that because they love plants so much, they can be a bit chatty about them. After an office poll, Bugbane made it to their list of favorite perennials. Bugbane is a deer-resistant perennial that stands 3’-4’ with bloom colors of white, cream, or pale pink. Bottlebrush-like flowers emerge in late summer and continue into fall, standing several feet above the foliage. “Its stature makes it perfect for the back of a perennial border and it easily mixes with shrubs in a woodland garden,” explains Eva Chiamulera, a landscape architect for the firm. “Our favorite pink flowering form is ‘Pink Spike’ and for a fantastic color contrast ‘Hillside Black Beauty’ has a bright white flower against dark purple foliage.”
< RUSSIAN SAGE(PEROVSKIA ATRIPLICIFOLIA) The tall, soft lavender colored wands of the Russian Sage plant dancing around in the breeze is a beautiful sight to see. The ‘Little Spire’ variety of this 2’-4’ tall woody perennial made Jan Johnsen of Johnsen Landscapes and Pools top three list for deer resistant choices. Also selected as a favorite of Penny Augustine, owner of Augustine Nursery in Kingston, NY—Penny adds, “The great color and long-lasting bloom makes Russian Sage ideal for plantings around outdoor patios and sitting areas.”
Looking to attract the ever-elusive hummingbird? Planting some Bee Balm is a great place to start. “For me, I always want to know how can I design and create a naturally beautiful, sustainable garden with long blooming color which will also attract ecologically valuable wildlife (preferably without deer),” says Jay Archer, President of Green Jay Landscaping in Westchester, NY. The unusually shaped flowers of Monarda sit atop strong stems and are available in pink, red, and purple.
33rd Annual Westchester County Home Show! During the first spring weekend, thousands of homeowners will flock to the 33rd annual Westchester County Home Show to start putting their home renovation plans into action. This particular home show has become an integral part of the community calendar of events with visitors and exhibitors coming from Westchester, Rockland, Orange, and Putnam counties in NY. There are many reasons to attend the Westchester County Home Show, which is essentially a giant marketplace. Within three to four hours, attendees can shop multiple vendors (of which many offer show specials and discounts) to gather answers to their questions and see beautiful, customized displays of work. Show exhibitors represent services covering the whole spectrum of home improvement and renovation needs including indoor and outdoor lighting, cabinetry, roofing, movers and storage, outdoor living professionals, air purification, windows, doors, siding, waterproofing, space organizers, architects, contractors, and a lot more. For a nice added perk for visitors, there will be giveaway and raffle prizes, which in the past have included electronics (e.g. ipads), a variety of home renovation products (e.g. kitchen island), and some extra useful services like free storage. For convenience, if hunger hits in a hurry, the Westchester County Center has a concession that is open during the event. Children of course are always welcome, and this year, there is an extra reason to bring them along. New York State Masonic Safety Identification Program (NYMSIP) will be there to offer their free of charge service, E-Z Child ID System. It serves as a recovery tool that can be used to assist in locating and identifying a missing child. “I believe that there is no greater joy than that of grilling farm fresh ingredients while enjoying the open air,” explains Executive Chef Gary Lucato of Henry’s at the Farm in Milton, NY. “Living in the Hudson Valley we get the best of all the seasons.” And the best of those seasons we shall make in 2015. With hot grills and hungry bellies, local foodies and grilling aficionados are ready for the spring season to break. After all, the best part of the warmer months after the reemergence of
beautiful grill marks of course, is the abundance of locally grown produce that we are so fortunate to have in our area. A big thanks to the farmers who bring us these amazing goodies! Lucato says “his springs are filled with abundant ramps, asparagus, fennel, rabbits, lamb, and fresh honey and balmy summer days of donut peaches, stinging nettles, mini watermelons, heirloom tomatoes, basil, radishes, and garlic scapes. Leading into the colorful fall days filled with pumpkins, squashes, apples, kale, venison, carrots, and beets.” Keeping local sourcing a priority, Executive Chef and Owner, John McCarthy of The Crimson Sparrow in Hudson, NY, says “some of my favorites have been lamb ribs from Pigasso Farm and pork from Raven and Boar Farm.” For preparation, Lucato points out that “one such cooking technique that demonstrates the versatility to continue creating palate pleasing meals all year round is grilling. Although classically pegged as a summer specific technique, there are many great applications that the grill can be used for all year round.” McCarthy enjoys “smoking vegetables and finishing them on the grill (e.g., carrots from MX Morningstar Farm in Copake).” For the final product, one of Lucato’s favorite dishes is one “that really highlights the bounty of the Hudson Valley is our grilled donut peach, English breakfast radish, lemon sorrel, sylvetta (wild rocket), toasted walnut and cherve salad, topped with a light champagne vinaigrette. Gently confit the carrots (preferably small rainbow carrots) in grapeseed oil. Add one head garlic (cut in half) and thyme to the oil. Remove the carrots when cooked through, approximately 1 hour. Place the carrots in a smoker and use a 50-50 mixture of applewood and alder chips to smoke. Cold smoke (place a pan of ice over the smoking pan) for 1 hour. Remove the carrots and reserve.

Black Garlic Sauce Peel 100g Black Garlic. Add black garlic to a blender with 200g dashi, 50g Squid Ink, 2 cloves of honey garlic, 15g Rice Vinegar and 3g Salt. Puree the mixture until fully incorporated and smooth. Pass the mixture through a chinois and reserve.
Creme Fraiche Whisk together 200g creme fraiche, 25g lemon juice and 15g yuzu juice. Season with 3g salt.
Sunflower Brittle Add 100g Isolmat and 100g Water to a pot over heat. When the isomalt is melted and incorporated, add 100g sunflower seeds. Cook the seeds and isomalt-water mixture until reduced by half and pour onto a silpat. Cook the brittle mixture in the oven at 325F for 20 minutes. Remove from the oven and allow to cool.
Garnish Sunflower shoots (Ironwood Farm, Ghent, NY).
For Service Warm and mark carrots on the grill. Add a pool of the black garlic sauce in the middle of the plate. Arrange the carrots over the black garlic sauce. Dot the plate with the creme fraiche. Break the sunflower seed brittle and add a few pieces to the plate. Dress the sunflower shoots with lemon juice and Maldonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sea salt and garnish the carrots with them. A Hudson Valley family looks to achieve balance and harmony between the interior and exterior living spaces of their beautiful Scarsdale home. text by Sara E. Murphy photography by Legacy Construction Northeast When the current owners of this sprawling Scarsdale, NY abode first found their future dream home in 2011, all was not quite as thoughtfully refined as you see it today. Rather, the Hudson Valley colonial was full of potential but still â&#x20AC;&#x153;very vanilla,â&#x20AC;? said Nicole Riess of Legacy Construction Northeast, the custom home building firm brought in to refresh the space. And refresh they did: Working hand-in-hand with Old Greenwich-based architects Alisberg Parker and Manhattan interior design firm Vicente Wolf Associates, Nicole and company set about an end-to-end renovation of the home. The end result left the residence fully updated with a clean and modern aesthetic. Inside, that is. With rich marble countertops, cool hardwood flooring, and a circular wall of windowed doors blanketing the room in natural light, the open concept kitchen now easily leant itself to entertaining family and friends. But step out those back doors, and the tranquil, go-aheadand-stay-awhile environment quickly changed. Instead of the luxurious entertaining space desired, the expansive outdoor area was sadly underutilized, covered with a worn tennis court years past its prime and packed full of copious overplanting and rock outcropping that left very little clean, usable outdoor space. And so in early 2013, operation-renovation moved outdoors, with

a focus on maintaining “interior-quality materials that also truly work in the outdoor elements,” explained Riess. The family’s goal was clear: To make the outside as immaculate and enjoyable an environment as the inside … And to do so quickly. After all, the family certainly wouldn’t mind “swimming by Memorial Day.” The great transformation began with an extension of the back terraces and the removal of restrictive railings that had previously blocked the flow to the vast yard. Using simple stone veneer, the area immediately outside of the kitchen was turned into a stylishly accessible spot perfect for relaxation and socializing alike. Rounded Bedford-stone steps mirroring the shape of the house create an amphitheater-style entrance into the lawn, where they are met by a second small series of subtle bluestone steps tucked into the grass. The out-of-date tennis court? Gone, replaced with a large, perfectly level—and thus perfectly usable—stretch of grassy terrain and an oversized rectangular pool and spa. This is is completed with an electric retractable cover and is surrounded by a formal boxwood garden boasting iceberg roses, hy30

drangeas and rotating seasonal annuals. A state-of-the-art sound system by Port Chester’s Innerspace Electronics is seamlessly integrated throughout, but you wouldn’t know it: the speakers and subwoofers are all hidden or disguised among the natural elements. Despite the incognito act, the full-range speaker system – controlled via iPhone or iPad – emits such strong, even sound that Reiss jokes the owners “could put on a concert for all of Scarsdale.” Next to the pool sits a trellis-covered dining terrace, featuring a fully-functioning bar with stunning concrete waterfall top, built-in barbecue and refrigerator making it just as easy—and appealing—to dine outdoors as in. Across the smooth stone sits an open-air pool house with an outdoor shower, retractable roof, plush sofas and flowing white fabrics inspired by designer Vicente Wolf ’s travel in Asia. “I wanted to step outside of the box of your typical ‘pool/dining’ area,” he explains, ultimately “creating a space that invokes a sense of quality and serenity through texture, woods, and a neutral color palette.”

Every corner of the property “truly focuses on enhancing the joy of entertaining outside,” says landscape architect Rivi Oren. Working closely with the owners, Oren made sure all elements of the ceremonial lawn were both beautifully curated and easily utilized—including a culinary-grade vegetable garden that sits to the side of the home. Bursting with blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, herbs, and a rotating selection of seasonal vegetables, the picturesque garden is surrounded by warm yellow roses and daisies interspersed with golden-toned grasses. Accomplishing such a fast-paced transformation of the property “had its challenges,” acknowledges Legacy Construction’s Reiss— quickly completing extensive underground drainage, coordinating tight movement from one task to the next—but in the end, “I’m proud to say every element came together seamlessly to create a new paradise, of sorts.” As the sun sets, a subtly dramatic lighting setup showcases the path to a charmingly rustic stone fire pit that sits along an axis across the yard from the dining area. Made with classic fireplace bricks and complementary noble hill stone, the fire pit can accommodate more than a dozen revelers around it at any given time. And indeed it often does, as the owners proudly use it almost every night possible. Because when your yard feels like a luxurious vacation destination, it can be rather difficult to conjure a convincing reason to head back indoors. nyone who has ever walked through a garden in the early hours comes back to his morning coffee a bit more engaged, a little less self-involved. It is a small everyday example of how nature restores us. Such examples are almost always small but somehow pervasive to our senses. It may seem obvious to us, yet lately and because of the proven benefits access to nature has for individuals in healthcare settings, restorative spaces are enjoying a certain celebrity. A simple window next to a hospital bed with apparently almost any view of nature promotes a positive attitude and shortens patient stays. Stephen and Rachel Kaplan, both environmental psychologists, call our innate engagement with nature â&#x20AC;&#x153;soft fascinationâ&#x20AC;? (Kaplan & Kaplan, 1989). Apparently, we are wired to respond to nature at every level, whether we recognize it or not. This makes nature a therapeutic ally. No one creating a home, especially a weekend home, would ever think any differently and yet, things often do not work out as intended. Care must be given to enlist nature and not simply assume her helpful presence. For us nature is the much smarter, if sometimes contentious-appearing partner: After all, there are lessons that nature is forever trying to teach us but, for what- ever reason as we design, we misunderstand her basic needs. This is the story of the renovation of a bungalow on an acre of land that has seen four generations of changes. And while the previous alterations were all done in a spirit of improving both the yard and the house none were comprehensive. Piecemeal changes, no matter how well-intended leave traces of the expedient, disconnected and uncommitted in their wake. So, although both land and house had good potential, it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t being realized. Many trees and shrubs, planted seventy years ago, had grown together or overshadowed other plantings. Open space needed to be reclaimed. So, some trees were trimmed, some removed altogether and still others relocated. A ribbon of land along the

drive, which we fondly call â&#x20AC;&#x153;orphan alley,â&#x20AC;? became the repository of many mature plants saved from their original locations that had long since become overrun. To help with our on-site problems of parking and turn around space we created a gravel court spreading out directly from the foundation to include all of the side and a part of the front yards. Existing fifty-foot spruce were supplemented with additional evergreens, viburnum and witch hazels to insure privacy from the road, while shad planted in the gravel under all the windows focused inside views out over the court and softened what otherwise would have been a severe and reflective landscape. We modified a continuous back yard slope by creating a level plateau of land that extended sixty feet out from a new porch. This outside room contained a lawn panel with pool and terraces that is framed by kousa dogwoods on one side and shad and sassafras on the other. Grass terraced steps at the end of the lawn descend to a vegetable garden with paths that then slope further to the meadow. These spaces beyond the lawn are different in character and form two other rooms. We are at a dense woodland 38

edge. Here we lose sight of our house altogether. Access to and views of nature from every window make a case for the house itself being a restorative place. Yet, without a few architectural changes we would not have been able to fully realize the connections to nature we wanted. By reconfiguring some of the interior rooms we gained an open kitchen-dining space adjacent to the porch that faces southwest towards the lawn and the meadow beyond. On axis with a renovated fireplace at the northeast side of the house we created a new living area with library. The original building was a Craftsman house circa 1929. And since the ceiling heights, window proportions, columns and eaves spoke to this style it seemed only natural to generate new construction details that would be sympathetic to the original. Of the additions, we added a mudroom at the most used kitchen door, an additional bath for what would become a master suite, and that all-important new porch. Without being slavish to historical detailing we gently reestablished its essentially modern spirit by removing all conflicting materials and styles.

One of the things architects working with landscape architects can bring to renovation projects is the ability to create coherence from all the apparently disparate but necessary spatial and structural features, both inside and out. In this way the environment can become both accommodating and engaging, where living becomes more convenient as it becomes more deliberate. Fundamental to this philosophy is the realization that everything must look to the next larger context into which it fits. So, a chair is appropriate to its use and in its surroundings. A room is appropriately placed within the house, the house is conceived as part of the site and the site looks to nature for ultimate inspiration. We’d like to think what we did is what the house and grounds wanted, but of course it was done for our own lifestyle, a lifestyle that created a dialog between the house and its surroundings. We certainly did not want a restoration project. We did however trust we were creating a homestead that would be restorative. RESOURCES DIRTWORKS, PC
