About me & Design Philosophy

About

I completed BA in Interior Design with a minor in Fine Arts at Washington State University. After received my Master of Science Degree in Interior Design at The Florida State University in August 2016, I began to develop the career path through interning with Interiors by Erik Galiana. There I gain insight into high end residential design and valuable designerclient relations experiences, working directly under the design principle and lead designer. After completing the internship, I became a junior designer at The Designers Group. The firm specializes in multi-family, offices, and healthcare designs, have allowed me to develop design expertise from managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.

Design Philosophy I believe interior design affects people’s well-being and overall life satisfaction. As designers, we translate dreams into reality that suit the needs of our clients. By making the most of every space and leveraging creative design solutions, we empower the users and encourage meaningful connections between interior spaces and their exterior envelopes. Furthermore, design is a tool that can be used to bring people together and motivate collaboration. I design to express the client’s aspirations by interweaving personality, culture, and experience to achieve a fulfilling result. Establishing a built environment that maximizes people’s productivity and inspire the community is what fuels my desire to design.

The Plaza- Rehab & Nursing Center Project Goal: Propose a nursing home that enhance residence ‘s living experience with assisted design feature. 100 W Kingsbridge Rd., Bronx, NY, 10468

The Plaza — Rehab & Nursing Center

The Plaza is an integrated care facility that offer short-term rehabilitation, senior living, and dementia units. The materials continue onto the ceiling resembles the relationship residents continue to build on. Quartz grain randomly spread out represents the unexpected enjoyment resident’s receive from connecting with people within the facility. The pop of gold is relieved against gray and silver which then guided the space. The environment is composited with soothing elements and modern tone and thus encourage residents to embrace the moment. Design Features: - Embedded assist living experience with hospitality atmosphere while providing homey feeling. - Opening up the space through the use of glass doors and metal cutout partitions. - Design common areas with distinctive features to enhance self-orientation of our users.

Root to Bloom- Dementia Friendly Care Home Project Goal: Create a dementia-friendly care home that enhance residence quality of life through assistant design features.

Root to Bloom — DementiaFriendly Care Home This evidence-based design project demonstrates a dementia-friendly care home that utilizes design features to enhance residence wayfinding performance, wellbeing, independence, and consistent mental support. The care home will also promote events to positively influence public perception toward dementia and offer consultation opportunities. This project focuses on developing a dementia-friendly prototype in a L-shaped building in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Design Features: - Build point of reference by creating visually and functionally distinctive spaces to help residents with navigational needs. - Provide clear visual access to the surrounding areas in order to help residents with self-orientation. - Develop simple circulation with minimum turning points to decrease the needs of memorization and help increase wayfinding ability. SKILLS • Design Research • Literature Review • Revit • Photoshop • Material Selections

Definition Design Problem The higher life expectancy and lower willingness to give birth to children resulted in a high dependency ratio. It is said that “prevalence of dementia raises sharply with age (WHO, 2011, P.3). The way society facilitates senior living, especially those with dementia, has become a serious public health issue. The design issue is how we can establish a truly dementiafriendly care facility by incorporating design considerations backed by medical research.

Dementia- Friendly Care Home Rejuvenate and expand the meaning of life Vision People with dementia will be able to live with confidence and dignity in the care home. Designs and programs will help the residences establish connections with people and expand meaning of lives.

Mission Promote a prototype of a dementiafriendly care facility that enhances resident wayfinding performance, independence, and well-being.

User Description/ Client People in different stages of dementia ...

#1 Inpatient Live at the care home on a monthly basic.

They come to the care home because they... want to reduce the burden for their family need professional support want to connect with others They want something that... is easy to use tolerates mistake requires little memorization warms their heart

#2 outpatient Only come during the daytime.

#3 caregiver Facility stuff including nursing, therapist, caregiver and personal caregiver

#4 FAMILY & LOCAL COMMUNITY Student volunteers, local community members, friends & family

Client Government, lead of the ministry of health, hospital owner

Site Information Overview

The L-shaped building situated in Hsinchu, Taiwan is selected as the site for a dementia-friendly care home. A large scale apartment complex and a university are in a close proximity to the site. We anticipate that the L-shaped architecture characteristic of the building will allow simple circulation and accommodate various functional needs according to the research findings. The large community aside is more than 20 years old and thus a care home will be a good addition to the neighborhood. Students from the university will have chances to volunteer and contribute to the care home. The care home will serve as not only a place for residences to live but also a center that promotes dementia friendly environment and provides lecturers to understand the disease better.

Design Considerations 1. Create anchor point (point of reference) by utilizing visually and functionally significant design for various spaces. 2. Simple circulation with minimum turning points but avoid long corridors. 3. Maximize visual access so that residents will be able to identify where they are, where to go, and even recall where they intend to go. Give residents the ability to oversee the area. 4. Utilize primary colors to create enough color variation between walls and floors to enhance the sense of depth. Primary colors are also easier to distinguish. 5. Avoid busy pattern or pattern that seem like a hole because people with dementia perceive the world differently. 6. Provide access to natural light because it impacts circadian rhythm, sleeping pattern, and emotion.

Why design? Everyone and their loved ones have a chance of eventually developing dementia, especially with age. Therefore, constructing a dementiafriendly environment requires effort from each person across a variety of disciplines. We want to shape a community where people with dementia could easily be included (Alzheimer’s Disease International, 2015). Physical disabilities prevented my grandmother from moving around freely since she turned 75 years old. And because most of the old houses in Taiwan did not incorporate the idea of “aging in place” and universal design into consideration, there’s typically no bedrooms on the first floor. Taking stairs is a nightmare for the elderly and it also puts elders at risk for hip injury. A study conducted by Passini also shows that cafeterias on floors different from where residents lived was identified as a major challenge for them even though it was accessible by taking elevators (Passini et al., 2000). As a result, my family rearranged the first floor and created an open style bedroom for my grandma. After five years, we noticed my grandmother experiencing dementia symptoms. At that time, she had short term memory loss but it did not have a severe impact on her daily life. Within the next two years after the disease was first diagnosed, it progressed in a pace that we didn’t expect. She lost the ability to connect certain events with its corresponding information. She did not realize relatives were getting together in her place to celebrate Lunar New Year – we had to constantly remind her. Alzheimer’s, along with other disabilities with age, resulted in significant obstacles for my grandma. Even though walking became a difficulty

for her due to her knee problems, she still insisted on going to the actual toilet rather than the portable designed specifically for elders. We have a 24/7 caregiver to assist my grandma and the caregiver’s bed was placed right beside her. One day, my grandma wanted to go to bathroom at night and suddenly fell – everything has been worse since. I realized the error in the placement of the beds because my grandma’s bed was further away from the bathroom. In addition, the bed for the caregiver blocked the other side of the path for my grandma. We lost our grandma this past summer. From her challenges, I further understand the power of interior design. I aim to leverage design as a tool to create a safer living environment. I design to create an encouraging environment that allows error, reinforces dignity, maximizes independence, and encourages connection. What fueled my passion in designing this space? A place that rejuvenates the soul and expands the meaning of lives.
