Her Majesty’s 90th Birthday Portrait It has been my great privilege to meet and have live portrait sittings with the Queen at Buckingham Palace when in 1984 I was invited to design the third portrait to grace the coinage of her realm. I am therefore absolutely delighted to have been given the opportunity once again to create a contemporary further portrait in celebration of Her Majesty’s 90th year. With this new effigy I have sought to capture, for this truly special occasion, the Queen’s timeless grace, charm, and steadfastness.
The definitive set of Her Majesty’s portraits Since 1953, the Queen’s image has adorned British coinage in a beautiful series of portraits that mark her journey to becoming Britain’s longest and oldest reigning monarch. This stunning set of five Silver layered Crown coins features each of these portraits accented in pure 24 carat Gold. Issuing Authority: Gibraltar. Diameter: 38.6 mm. Maximum Mintage: 24,999 sets

An exceptional and rare series in the history of British coinage There exists a series of British coins you may have never heard about, most probably have never seen, and almost certainly will never have held in your own hands. They belong to a tradition that dates back over 1,000 years and they are produced for the personal use of the British monarch these coins are known as The Royal Maundy. A coinage for the personal use of Her Majesty The Queen For well over six centuries each year on Easter Thursday the reigning King or Queen takes part in a ceremony in which gifts of money are handed out to a number of deserving men and women, equal to the age of the monarch. This means that each year fewer than 200 people receive Maundy coinage.
From the reign of Queen Victoria to Queen Elizabeth II seven portraits have appeared on the Royal Maundy - The Royal Maundy Collection enables you to own all seven of them. Maundy coins bearing Queen COLLE Elizabeth II’s effigy have CT CONF WITH been struck in every year Quality IDENCE since her Coronation guaran & Authenticit teed y in 1953 and uniquely, guaran 14 day retur tee. Maundy Order collection code: CT112982
Coinage for the personal use of Her Majesty The Queen Maundy money was originally given to recipients only in penny coins. It was not until the reign of King George III that the gift was given in sets of the four denominations
When Britain went ‘decimal’ in 1971 these are the only four coins that did not change size, shape or design
12
The Maundy series is highly prized by collectors as it is the only series that has been struck every year since 1822, and to the same size and specification
The reverse design originally by Jean Baptiste Merlen, was modified in the reign of Queen Victoria by William Charles Wyon and has remained essentially unchanged to this day The Maundy penny is the smallest British legal tender coin at 11mm diameter

Official limited edition gold coin from the Merchant Navy
The
BATTLE OF THE
ATLANTIC 1939 - 1945
“The Battle of the Atlantic was the dominating factor all through the war. Never for one moment could we forget that everything happening elsewhere, on land, at sea, or in the air, depended ultimately on its outcome...” Sir Winston Churchill
The Merchant Navy is often referred to as the ‘Fourth Service’, but it has also become the forgotten service, with the huge contribution of the merchant fleet during war too often overlooked and undervalued. The thousands of merchant seafarers who made up the ‘Fourth Service’ during the war are our ‘unsung heroes’ – their heroism and the sacrifices largely unreported and uncelebrated. The London Mint Office is proud to change this. All of the coins on the next 4 pages are endorsed by, and help fund donations to, The Merchant Navy Association.

SS Gairsoppa Britain’s war-time Shipwreck silver - recovered and reforged Silver
Britain’s war-time silver recovered and reforged 75 years after it was lost
75 years after The heaviest and deepest it was lost cargo ever precious-metal retrieved from a shipwreck
In February 1941, a Merchant Navy vessel the Gairsoppa was torpedoed and sunk by German U-boat U-101 off the Irish coast. On board she had up to 7 million ounces of silver, destined to be minted into British coins. Silver, crew and ship sank to the bottom of the ocean 4,700 metres below sea level. In 2012, after more than 70 years on the seabed the WWII silver was located and brought to the surface – thanks to advanced modern technology it is one of the deepest successful shipwreck recovery operations ever! Struck from the very same silver, these unique commemoratives provide a fitting tribute to not only the lost crew of the SS Gairsoppa but to the 30,000 Merchant Navy sailors who sacrificed their lives during the Battle of the Atlantic .

The Waterloo Medal After the epic battle of Waterloo in 1815 the Duke of Wellington decided that a true numismatic masterpiece - a gold medal of ‘the highest artistic merit’ should be created as a gift for the Allied sovereigns who defeated Napoleon. The world-renowned engraver, Benedetto Pistrucci, was given the task of designing the medal. It took Pistrucci more than 30 years to complete his intricate design of the Waterloo Medal. The sheer size and the intricate detailing of the medal proved too complex and too large to realise with the technology that was available at the time. By the time Pistrucci announced the reasons for not being able to produce the medals, all the intended recipients, except Wellington, were dead and the Waterloo Medal was never actually struck. Today, nearly 200 years later this commemorative has at last been struck.

The
Ancients Coins don’t just reflect history they are a part of its very fabric. Each of these ancient coins would have passed through thousands, if not millions of pairs of hands. The very earliest ‘ancient’ coins were hand struck by placing a cast bronze disc (planchet) between two metal dies engraved with the obverse and reverse designs. The dies were then hit with a sledgehammer. Differences and cracks in the dies, variations in how the planchet was placed, how well, and how many times it was struck mean that each and every ancient coin is completely unique.
