(Alberto Bogo/IStockphoto/Thinkstock) For African- American women, the decision to “go natural” can be quite difficult.
Most remember as children when mothers, grandmothers, aunts, cousins, or even big sisters would drag them into the kitchen to wash, dry then press their hair with a pressing comb, sometimes heated up on a gas stove.
Others remember sessions at the beauty shop where hours upon hours would be spent as a hairdresser went through the process of perming their hair straight. Then again, others might remember sessions where they would sit between somebody’s legs on the floor and have their hair braided. All of this was in an effort to assimilate into American culture that deemed after the ‘70s that African-American hair in it’s natural state wasn’t “acceptable”.
Now it seems the pendulum has swung back around.
In the African-American community, women are embracing their natural hair. Hair salons are sprouting up all over the place that cater to natural hair. Websites are also popping up all over the Internet that cater to natural hair. And even shopping stores are carrying products designed for natural hair!

isn’t good enough, isn’t professional enough.” (iStockphoto/Thinkstock) Still, it seems if natural hair still isn’t good enough, isn’t professional enough. In a society were women are in the workforce, maintaining a professional hairstyle is essential. Recently, Rhonda S. Lee, a meteorologist at KTBS, was fired over comments she made on the TV stations Facebook page. The station takes the position that Lee violated the stations policy on employee comment after she responded to viewers’ complaints.
While this highlights another issue of internet policies in the work place, it also highlights the fact that Lee should be able to wear her hair in a natural hair style if it looks professional and suits her job. In fact, at the end of the day, an employee’s work ethic should determine his or her position, or lack thereof.
Women of all races, colors, nationalities and religions should ensure– regardless of their hair texture, skin tone, height, weight, or any other features– that they are dressed for their profession. For example, in the military, personnel are not allowed to have their hair touching the shirt or jacket collar while they are in uniform. Other than that requirement, however, they style their hair is just fine as long as they can wear their uniform hat when needed.
Discrimination, because of any of those features or characteristics is illegal and those employers who discriminate can face legal action. But if a woman doesn’t dress for their profession it is no longer discrimination. Additionally, it isn’t just women that have to remain professional, but men as well.
On one episode of Living Single, Kyle Barker was up for a promotion and one of the men in charge of his promotion suggested that he no longer wear his hair in dreadlocks. However, Barker was well dressed and groomed for his job as a stockbroker.
At the end of the day, hair textures shouldn’t be a problem. Hairstyles should fall in line with the profession, but other than requirements such as those in the military hair should be worn in whichever way makes the person comfortable.
