Image relaxation videos use visual elements help generate an ambience whereby viewers can unwind and may be used either to reduce stress or simply for recreation. Visuals are not critical components for creating a relaxing environment as there are many people who simply use audio CDs to relax. When using a CD people usually have their eyes closed and voice is used to help the listener visualise scenarios with their imagination to help them relax. However, some people are unable to use this technique and need an alternative. One such alternative is to use an image relaxation video which uses visuals as a core component. Their whole purpose is to show calming scenarios to the viewers that help them relax by stimulating their visual sense. Purposes Of Relaxation Visuals Visuals are used to help create a peaceful ambience by sustaining the concentration and focus of the viewer via:
Engagement - Showing images engages the eyesight of the viewer and provides something specific for them to focus their attention. The act of focusing helps to prevent the intrusion of distracting environmental visuals. Blocking - By displaying images we are physically attempting to help the viewer focus by creating a blocking or masking effect against visuals from the environment to a certain extent.
Types Of Relaxation Visuals The visual component of image relaxation videos consists of a number of visuals displayed to the viewer with individual visuals being changed over to the next using what is called a transition: Natural Visuals - The visuals used in a relaxation video are usually of either: Natural Scenes:
Water - Rivers, lakes or ocean; Land - Countryside, mountains or coastline; Sky - Sunrise or sunset, cloud formations or storms such as lightening; or
Natural Objects:
Flora - Individual flowers or maybe grass, trees or a crop moving in a breeze are sometimes used; Fauna - Occasionally a frog or a cricket making their natural noises or calls may be used.
Types Of Visual Media The visual media for image relaxation videos is either, still images, motion video clips or a combination of these two: Still Images - As the name suggests these are just images, or photographs of calming natural scenes. Motion Video Clips - Video clips are used in order to capture both the motion of something and the sounds that surround it. In order to convey a feeling of tranquillity to the viewer the motion within the video is usually quite slow. Anything moving at speed is unlikely to communicate a calming effect on the viewer. The methods by which video clips are produced are: Still Video - With this type of video, the scene is fixed and the subject of the video is virtually stationary or moving only very slightly (e.g. a flower swaying gently in the breeze). The purpose of this type of video is usually to also capture the natural sounds close by. Moving Video - With this type of video either the video camera will be moving or there will be something within the scene moving:
Moving Camera - The video camera will be in motion, usually a panning movement across a specific scene. An example here would be providing a panoramic view along a stretch of coastline; or Fixed Camera - The video camera will be stationary with an object moving around within or across the scene. Examples include the sun rising or setting or clouds rolling across the sky. Fixed And Moving Camera - Visuals of both moving and fixed camera scenes could also be displayed within the same relaxation video.
Images And Video - A mixture of both images and video clip visuals could also be displayed within the same relaxation video. Transitions - The technique used to exchange one visual for another is called a transition. A transition takes place over a period of time which is relatively short and will be a specific type:
Transition Time - Just as with the actual visuals, the transition time is important for keeping the viewer in a relaxed state. A zero, instantaneous or abrupt transition time may disrupt the viewer from their relaxed state. Also, a lengthy transition could frustrate the viewer and also disrupt their relaxed state. A transition time of between 2 and 4 seconds is suitable for ensuring that the viewer does not have their concentration disrupted abruptly whilst enabling them to change their focus of attention gradually.
Transition Type - A transition from one image to another may be done in many graphical ways. Some examples of common types of transition include: slide (either top to bottom or side to side); flip (also either top to bottom or side to side); breaking glass (where the image breaks up into shapes like pieces of glass); dissolve (where the image literally dissolves away bit by bit to reveal the next image); and many others, of which many are probably unsuitable for a relaxing transition effect. Whatever type of transition is used it should help promote a relaxed feeling and not stress or agitate the viewer. It may also be a good idea to stick to one type of transition through the video.
Summary On Video For Image Relaxation Videos A person's frame of mind can be helped to relax by displaying videos to them that focus their attention on lovely imagery and by blocking out other surrounding visual stimuli. Visuals are not essential for achieving a relaxed state as many people can use just a CD and visualise with their eyes closed. However, for those individuals that cannot relax with just audio, image relaxation videos with visuals as the main component are a good alternative, be it for recreational purposes or for reducing stress. The type of visual used is usually one or a combination of: still images (e.g. photographs) and moving images (e.g. video clips) of natural scenes (i.e. water, land and sky) and objects (i.e. flora and fauna). Individuals can have individual preferences, so a video that helps one person feel relaxed may not work for another. For this reason, individuals wanting to use image relaxation videos to relax may need to try out a range of different types to establish which variety works best for them.
