as pizza and soda. Please note that you can have up to 4 people per lane. For those companies who reserve multiple lanes we will do our best to have them be adjacent to one another. For those companies who are interesting in being a sponsor they can sponsor a lane for $200. In addition to signage on the lane their logo will also be incorporated into an electronic display that afternoon.
Look no further than NEPMA’s 1st annual bowling outing. It will be a great time to share some fun and a few laughs whether you are sharing them with family, coworkers or friends. This will be a wonderful time to network with fellow professionals within our industry. This bowling event will take place on November 12, 2016 at the Town Line Luxury Lanes which are located at 665 Broadway in 12 NOVE Malden MA. The bowling will take place from 1:00 – 3:00 pm and participants are welcome to join their fellow participants in the sports bar at the lanes from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.
Last year NEPMA held its 25th Annual Golf Classic & Awards Barbeque with the proceeds benefiting the Mark Weintraub Scholarship. In evaluating the golf outing the Board of Directors felt that NEPMA should replace the golf outing with another event that would have wider appeal with our ER 2016 members while at the same time benefiting the Mark Weintraub Scholarship. With the foresight and energy from Galvin J. Murphy of Yankee Pest Control the concept of a bowling outing originated.

The proceeds from this outing will benefit the Mark Weintraub Scholarship Fund. The cost to reserve a lane is $200. This includes the lane for the entire 2 hours and shoes for everyone, as well

MAP: WHERE THE BEDBUGS ARE IN BOSTON By Matt Rocheleau, Boston Globe Thinking of picking up some furniture off the street in Allston? This map might convince you to think again. On and around Sept. 1 each year, tens of thousands of college students descend on the city, while thousands of other residents move in and out of apartments. That means loads of furniture and other household products will be left curbside. And opportunistic neighbors will snatch some of those free items up to decorate their new digs. Officials say that sharing mattresses, futons, coffee tables, and other items in such a manner can cause the hitchhiking insects to spread. If you’re itching to bring unwanted furniture in from off the street, think again, officials say, or you may soon find yourself with some tiny, unwanted roommates. Around move-in week each year, city workers patrol city streets, slapping bright orange stickers on discarded items to warn residents that they may contain bedbugs. Flyers and other informational packets are also passed out to new residents, students, and students’ parents. City officials in Boston typically field a few hundred complaints of bed bugs annually. Last year, the city received 427 complaints, the highest such total since at least 2012, records show. There were 398 complaints made in 2014; 336 in 2013; and 412 in 2012, records show.

OPERATION SAFE DRIVER WEEK IS OCTOBER 16-22 JJ Keller On August 2, 2016, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) announced that its 2016 Operation Safe Driver Week would be held during Oct. 16-22, 2016. During this event, law enforcement agencies throughout North America will engage in increased traffic safety enforcement and education that will be focused on at combating unsafe driving behaviors by commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers and passengervehicle drivers.
The map below shows a dot for each complaint filed since the start of 2012. Apparently, bedbugs are not picky about which part of the city they live in.
The CVSA holds Operation Safe Driver Week in partnership with the FMCSA. It is supported by industry and transportation safety organizations, and aims to reduce the number of crashes, deaths and injuries involving large trucks, buses and cars due to unsafe driving behaviors. Some unsafe behaviors that enforcement will be tracking throughout the event include the following:
Bed bug complaints in Boston
•
Speeding
Each dot represents one bed bug complaint. The map shows a total of 1,822 such complaints filed with the City of Boston between Jan. 1, 2012 and Aug. 28, 2016.
•
Failure to use a seatbelt while operating a CMV or in a passenger vehicle
•
Distracted driving
•
Failure to obey traffic control devices
•
Traveling too closely
•
Improper lane changes
So far this year (through Sunday), 249 such pleas for help have been filed with the city.
According the CVSA, unsafe driver behavior by CMV drivers and passenger-vehicle drivers continues to be the leading cause of crashes. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) “Large Truck Crash Causation Study” cites driver behavior as the critical reason for more than 88 percent of large truck crashes and 93 percent of passenger-vehicle crashes.

Bed bugs have not been shown to spread disease, but their bites can cause allergic reactions and secondary skin infections.
On Martha’s Vineyard, Lyme Disease and other tick borne illnesses are common topics of conversation. WCAI correspondent Angela Scionti reports about a new project that could stop transmission of these diseases.
CONTROLLING INTEREST It is Dr. Nevena Zubcevik’s first time traveling from her job at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital in Boston, to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital in Oak Bluffs. Once here, she’s greeted by a crowd of people desperate for information. Zubcevik is an expert in tick-borne diseases. And she’s here to update patients about the diseases’ new diagnostics, therapeutics, and rehabilitation efforts around tick borne illnesses, particularly Lyme Disease. “We have an epidemic throughout the United States, and Martha’s Vineyard is a hotspot, in being that it is an island.”
PAGE 15 bite these mice, they will not become infected.” As Zubcevik says, ticks are born disease free. They usually acquire the Lyme pathogen when they have their first meal – and that’s usually the blood of a white-footed mouse. So, Esvelt wants to use genetics to create disease-resistant mice. So when these genetically-modified mice are released into the wild, they won’t be able to pass on the disease to healthy ticks.
With so much tick-related disease here, Zubcevik says the Vineyard is prime for something bigger than the standard prevention and treatment methods.
“The idea is that Lyme Disease and other tick-borne infections are really ecological.” Says Esvelt. “They are a product of a transmission cycle, where the pathogen is passed back and forth between white footed mice, primarily, and ticks…infected, there likely there is to be disease.”
“There could be innovative, preventive strategies that could be applied here in more of a controlled environment, and I would like to be a part of more rigorous prevention, and treatment strategies so that the people on Martha’s Vineyard, both the tourists and the locals can have a Lyme Disease and tick born illness-free existence,” says Zubcevik.
Esvelt is looking to experiment with this idea on both Nantucket and the Vineyard. But the genetically-engineered mice won’t be arriving on the ferries anytime soon. Esvelt says it may take seven years to get an experiment underway. So, in the meantime, Dr. Zubcevik says visitors and locals should use daily prevention.
That’s the dream – an island free from tick-born illnesses. But what if it was more than a dream? What if there was a scientific solution that could prevent Lyme disease and potentially other tick-related illnesses from ever finding their way into the human body?
“People need to be very vigilant about prevention. Applying insect repellent, every day, especially in the morning when they wake up. Applying permethrin to their backpacks, and the outside of their clothing, and then doing nightly tick checks in the shower, and at any sign of illness, they should be reporting to their doctor.”
Kevin Esvelt thinks he might have a way. He doesn’t know if it will be successful yet, but the MIT professor who works in a lab across the river from Zubcevik, is developing a plan to rid Martha’s Vineyard and the neighboring island of Nantucket of Lyme Disease. “If we make mice that are resistant, that cannot be infected, and we release sufficient mice into the population that are effectively immunized against Lyme and other tick borne diseases, then, when the ticks, which are not born infected,

Esvelt and his colleagues say that engaging the Martha’s Vineyard community about their experiment is important for the project’s success – and success means eliminating Lyme disease from Martha’s Vineyard.
WHAT IS QUALITYPRO NPMA QualityPro is an industry program designed to increase professionalism of the industry through self-regulation; stimulate consumer demand through increased confidence and a higher public perception of industry professionalism; create common sense, quality industry standards; and provide marketing opportunities to participating companies by recognizing commitment to excellence and higher performance standards. This is a company, not individual, designation. Reserved as an exclusive NPMA member benefit, this corporate program is designed to separate QualityPro companies from the competition and increase the overall professionalism of the industry. As QualityPro members inform consumers about QualityPro, through the marketing tools provided, you will increase your business. In addition, this program will encourage QualityPro companies to hire smartly, train correctly, and upgrade professionalism through the training and education of service technicians and sales personnel. QualityPro companies are environmentally responsible, and committed to providing consumers with the highest possible service. Built around the four key principles of Business Operations, Consumer Relations, Environmental Stewardship, and Technician Training, the QualityPro certification is designed to be feasible and affordable for every company in the pest management industry. Operators of all sizes from around the country have been involved in the program since its inception, assuring you of the highest quality program. Why Do You Need QualityPro? The pest management industry needs to raise the bar for quality. Consumers are unsure how to choose a pest management professional. QualityPro makes it easier to select companies by more clearly identifying pest management companies that excel. As a result of these pressures on the industry to stimulate
PAGE 19 growth in the marketplace, a broad range of industry stakeholders called upon NPMA to organize a program designed to recognize professionalism in the industry. The group asked NPMA to develop a seal of approval for the pest management industry. NPMA set out to determine the feasibility of a QualityPro program and determine whether this type of program would make a difference to consumers, regulators, and the media. Research included discussions with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, state pesticide officials, and national media. NPMA also conducted focus groups to discover how consumers would view this program. Research findings were overwhelmingly positive. Most importantly, in the focus groups, consumers replied positively to this type of program. When asked, “Imagine this national organization that we’ve been talking about would offer a Seal of Approval for their members.” Comments included: •
“That [seal] would tell me the company knows what it is doing.”
•
“A seal would raise the bar for pest control operators.”
•
“It means the company is more qualified and had to meet additional requirements.”
•
“The company cares enough about doing a good job that they will go the extra mile.”
The research results provided a validation of the opportunity to influence the attitudes of consumers, the media, and regulators with regard to the pest management industry. Improving the Industry Over the last five years, NPMA has been focused on meeting the challenges facing our industry. Now NPMA is moving from a reactive mode to a proactive mode. Government affairs is shaping policy, rather than defending it, and the Professional Pest Management Alliance is taking our messages directly to the consumer and controlling our own destiny. QualityPro is the next step in this proactive approach. How Do You Become QualityPro? A wide range of materials will be available for companies that are interested in becoming QualityPro certified. The program’s unique structure is designed to be inclusive, offering opportunities for direct industry involvement from small companies to large corporations. QualityPro isn’t designed to impose a set of standards, it is designed to raise the bar by providing every company with the tools you need to excel in this industry. Once you apply, you will receive a Resource Manual with these useful materials. Look for the TOOLBOX symbol throughout this book, which indicates which material will be included in the Resource Manual. The value of these tools alone justifies your cost.

SYNGENTA TAKES THE BITE OUT OF FLEAS AND TICKS WITH NEW SECURECHOICE™ ASSURANCE PROGRAM To help Pest Management Professionals (PMPs) manage the threat of fleas and ticks, Syngenta has launched its new SecureChoice™ Flea and Tick Assurance Program. Similar to the SecureChoice Mosquito Assurance Program, this program provides a pest control assurance offering from Syngenta to PMPs for outdoor fleas and ticks. It also offers PMPs an additional, differentiated revenue-generating opportunity with their customers. With the power of two proven products, the SecureChoice Flea and Tick Assurance Program can significantly reduce outdoor populations of fleas and ticks for up to 90 days. Demand® CS insecticide provides immediate and residual control of fleas and ticks, while Archer® insect growth regulator interrupts their reproductive cycles to prevent them from becoming egglaying adults. “We’re proud to expand the SecureChoice brand and continue the trend of providing assurance to PMPs and homeowners of their pest control results for even more types of insects,” said Steve Dorer, market manager for Professional Pest Management (PPM) at Syngenta, North America. “Successfully introduced for mosquitoes last year, a SecureChoice assurance program now exists for fleas and ticks as well.” PMPs can participate in the program by purchasing Demand CS and Archer between Jan. 1 and Nov. 30, 2016 (“Program Period”), and by making applications by Dec. 31, 2016. If applications of Demand CS and Archer fail to provide adequate reduction of outdoor flea and tick populations during the treatment period, Syngenta will provide the appropriate quantity of Demand CS and Archer to cover the necessary retreatment(s). “Beyond being a nuisance, these pests pose serious threats to public health — ticks, for example, are vectors of Lyme disease,” said Pat Willenbrock, head of marketing for PPM at Syngenta, North America. “By launching the SecureChoice Flea and Tick Assurance Program, we’re helping PMPs identify ways to grow their business through a new service offering, which increases their value to customers.”

ASK MR. PEST CONTROL Appliance Defiance Question: How should a PMP deal with the need to move appliances in a home in order to inspect, place traps, close holes, etc.? On one hand, we want to solve our customer’s problems causing them the least amount of stress. On the other hand, we don’t want to be liable for appliance damage or injuries sustained in the process. Answer: PMPs need to move appliances in order to manage cockroaches and rodents effectively in kitchens. It’s often possible to move refrigerators and ovens without a problem. When we can move an appliance, we should. However, sometimes an appliance is too heavy, moving it will damage the floor or its utility connections are too short. When it becomes apparent that we can’t move an appliance without hurting ourselves or causing damage, then we shouldn’t. At this point, arrange with the building manager or homeowner to have a handyman or an appliance repairman move or disconnect the appliance. This is how a dishwasher would be handled. The customer may get upset
about having to take an additional step, but they’ll also be upset if their property is damaged. Be sure to document that the pest cannot be managed effectively without moving the appliance. One way to avoid this situation is to become familiar with moving and disconnecting appliances properly. This can be offered as an additional service. When new appliances are delivered, there’s often an additional charge to connect the appliances to water or gas utilities. It would not be unreasonable to charge for this type of service. --Mr. Pest Control (Editor’s note: Articles from the Ask Mr. Pest Control series are reprinted with permission from Univar.
