CONTROLLING INTEREST NEWSLETTER OF THE NEW ENGLAND PEST MANAGEMENT ASSOCIATION, INC. 1ST ANNUAL BOWLING OUTING Have you been looking for an event to take your employees to? Have you been looking for an event to take your family to? Have you been looking for an event to take clients to?

as pizza and soda. Please note that you can have up to 4 people per lane. For those companies who reserve multiple lanes we will do our best to have them be adjacent to one another. For those companies who are interesting in being a sponsor they can sponsor a lane for $200. In addition to signage on the lane their logo will also be incorporated into an electronic display that afternoon.

Look no further than NEPMA’s 1st annual bowling outing. It will be a great time to share some fun and a few laughs whether you are sharing them with family, coworkers or friends. This will be a wonderful time to network with fellow professionals within our industry. This bowling event will take place on November 12, 2016 at the Town Line Luxury Lanes which are located at 665 Broadway in 12 NOVE Malden MA. The bowling will take place from 1:00 – 3:00 pm and participants are welcome to join their fellow participants in the sports bar at the lanes from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.

Last year NEPMA held its 25th Annual Golf Classic & Awards Barbeque with the proceeds benefiting the Mark Weintraub Scholarship. In evaluating the golf outing the Board of Directors felt that NEPMA should replace the golf outing with another event that would have wider appeal with our ER 2016 members while at the same time benefiting the Mark Weintraub Scholarship. With the foresight and energy from Galvin J. Murphy of Yankee Pest Control the concept of a bowling outing originated.

SATURDAY

The proceeds from this outing will benefit the Mark Weintraub Scholarship Fund. The cost to reserve a lane is $200. This includes the lane for the entire 2 hours and shoes for everyone, as well

NEW STANDARDS FOR SUPERVISION OF NON CERTIFIED APPLICATORS - HOW WILL IT AFFECT ME? By Richard Berman The new 333 CMR 10.07, Standards for Supervision of Non-Certified Applicators went into effect September 23, 2016. What does this mean to business practices and what can you expect? The new regulation is the culmination of several years of debate, testimony and public hearings. Read and think about how each of the following statements apply to your business. 1. The regulation does not apply to individuals who are certified applicators and do not supervise non-certified individuals (core licensed people). 2. The regulation does not apply to certified applicators who supervise core licensed applicators who only apply generaluse pesticides.

3. The regulation does not apply to certified applicators who supervise other certified applicators (registered in the appropriate categories of course). 4. The regulation does not apply to core licensed individuals who have no supervisory responsibilities. 5. The regulation does not apply to core licensed individuals who may supervise other core licensed applicators applying only general-use pesticides*. 6. The regulation does not apply to any individuals who may not be licensed and supervise noncertified people (holding a core license) that apply only general-use pesticides*. So who does this regulation apply to? This regulation applies to certified applicators who supervise noncertified applicators (core license holders) who apply restricted-use pesticides. These supervisors need to be familiar with this regulation, their responsibilities and obligations. Every owner, manager and supervisor needs to know what restricted-use pesticides are used in their business. Three structural restricted-use classes of pesticides that come to mind in this category are avicides, rodenticide tracking powders and fumigants. The Department will be conducting outreach and making educational efforts in the near future before taking enforcement actions (unless some egregious situation occurs). NEPMA and others will be making the same outreach efforts on behalf of the membership and industry. *This regulation applies to certified applicators who supervise liquid termticide applications by core licensed individuals. Despite the fact liquid termiticides are general-use pesticides, 333 CMR 13.05 (Subsurface Application of Termiticides) requires direct supervision of core licensed individuals applying subsurface pesticides for the control of termites. Watch for future meeting notices and opportunities to learn about the new specific requirements in 333 CMR 10.07.

W.D.I. Registry NEPMA E-NEWSLETTER COMING TO YOUR INBOX The New England Pest Management Association wants its news and information widely accessible by all members including employees of member companies. One of the ways we will accomplish this is that with every issue of Controlling Interest there will be an electronic version created, in addition to the print version. While members will continue to receive a printed copy of the newsletter an electronic version of the newsletter will be created and emailed out to all members. Our goal is to also email it out to all employees of member companies. To accomplish this we would like to have all member companies email us a list to info@nepma.org which would include employees names and email address that we can then email out each issue of the e-CI.

The Massachusetts Fallen Heroes was established in 2010 and is comprised of combat veterans who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan and are committed to memorializing their fellow service members who did not return home. PARTS OF NEW ENGLAND SEEING RISE IN TICK-BORNE DISEASE By Lisa Rathke The season for tick bites isn’t over yet, with a second round coming this fall and health officials in parts of northern New England are warning about a rise in another tick-borne disease other than Lyme. The Vermont Health Department said late last month that the state is approaching its highest number of reported cases of anaplasmosis, spread by the bite of the black-legged tick, or deer tick, which also transmits Lyme disease. Symptoms of anaplasmosis include fever, headache, chills and muscle aches and can be treated with antibiotics. So far this year, 133 cases have been reported in Vermont, compared to 139 in all of 2015. And there’s still a tick season left this year. In over 33 percent of the reported cases, people were sick enough to be hospitalized, compared to just 3 percent for Lyme disease, according to Bradley Tompkins, infectious disease epidemiologist. Tompkins called anaplasmosis a “serious illness.” While New Hampshire has seen an increase in reported anaplasmosis cases in recent years from 30 in 2011 to 108 in 2015, there doesn’t appear to be an uptick in cases this year.

For over 20 years, our Pest Control Operators’ insurance program has featured broad coverage, highly rated insurance carriers, and unmatched in-house claims service. BE SURE. BE PCOpro SECURE.

Maine, however, has had a spike this summer. The state had 266 reported cases through the end of August, compared to 186 for all of 2015, said Chuck Lubelczyk, vector ecologist at the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. The number of cases tends to peak in the spring and summer when young ticks are active but there’s a surge in the fall when adult ticks are hungry before winter, health officials said.

The spike is a bit of a surprise because dry summer weather cut down on tick numbers, Lubelczyk said.

Some of the hardest-hit areas in Maine were coastal counties, where fog could’ve mitigated the lack of rain. Also, there were healthy small mammal populations thanks to the mild winter, Lubelczyk said.

The program year begins October 1, 2016, and ends September 30, 2017. “Maintaining a business and overseeing day-to-day operations gives PMPs plenty to deal with,” said Pat Willenbrock, head

of marketing for Professional Pest Management (PPM) for Syngenta in North America. “By re-aligning our qualifying period and program year, we’re providing flexibility for PMPs to purchase products when it’s most convenient for them, whether that be at the beginning or the end of the year.” Qualifying for the program is simple. Each qualifying product contains a specific base rebate dollar amount. To qualify for the program, PMPs must earn at least $200 in base rebates between October 1, 2016 and March 31, 2017. Once qualified, PMPs have the opportunity to receive up to three rebate payments for their purchases throughout the year. For a list of qualifying products, corresponding base rebates and further details, visit www. PestPartners365.com. PMPs who qualify for the program can enjoy extended payment terms through July 6, 2017 on select product purchases with SummerPay™. These qualifying products include three new master shippers for Advion® Ant gel bait, Advion® Cockroach gel bait and Altriset® termiticide, each of which contains several individual product packages in one convenient configuration. Also new this year, Syngenta is introducing an Early Order Bonus offer. PMPs who earn a base rebate of at least $500 between October 1, 2016 and December 7, 2016 will earn a onetime Early Order Bonus rebate, which will be paid on or about February 28, 2017. “By offering this extra opportunity for savings, Syngenta is allowing PMPs to save even more when they purchase early,” said Steve Dorer, market manager for PPM at Syngenta, North America. “The qualifying period for the program continues through March, but for companies that can make fourth quarter purchases, this represents an additional savings opportunity.” For more information about the PestPartners 365 Program, please visit www.PestPartners365.com or contact the Syngenta Customer Center at 1-866-SYNGENT(A) (796-4368).

“Tom has been one of our industry’s most active grassroots builders and supporters, and he was always ready to engage the lawn care industry and help RISE reach lawn care operators across the country,” said Stahl.

Despite their ubiquity, Rattus norvegicus, otherwise known as the brown rat, remains surprisingly mysterious. Scientists have only a hazy idea of how it went from wild rodent to unwanted human companion.

The RISE Grassroots Excellence Award is presented annually to an individual, group or allied association that demonstrates outstanding efforts and contributions to furthering the mission, vision and goals of the specialty pesticide and fertilizer industry with public policy and advocacy through grassroots engagement.

Now Dr. Munshi-South and his colleagues have completed the first in-depth genetic study of brown rats from around the world. Their story has twists and turns that surprise even the experts.

The Strategic Driver Award recognizes RISE members for their work in advocacy, community building, investing for the future and organizational strength – the four drivers that make up the association’s five-year strategic plan. In addition to their professional jobs, these honorees volunteer on behalf of the entire industry. Frank Wong, Bayer, was recognized for his grassroots engagement in Montgomery County, Maryland, with the Community Building Strategic Driver Award; the members of the association’s Communications Committee were awarded the Investing for the Future Strategic Driver for their work in attracting the next generation of engaged volunteers and refreshing the association’s brand. The Strategic Driver Award for Organizational Strength was awarded to Karen Larson, Clarke, for her work with the Regulatory Affairs Committee; and the members of the Regulatory Affairs Committee were recognized with the Advocacy Strategic Driver Award for increasing EPA staff knowledge about pesticides and their work on Pesticide Registration Improvement Act (PRIA) 4. HOW THE BROWN RAT CONQUERED NEW YORK CITY (AND EVERY OTHER ONE, TOO) Editor’s Note: Written by Carl Zimmer and reprinted from the October 27, 2016 edition of The New York Times Millions of them live in New York, and billions more in cities and on farms across the globe. And wherever they scurry, they wreak havoc. They devour food supplies and contaminate what they don’t eat with feces and urine. They spread a range of harmful viruses and bacteria. In delicate ecosystems around the world, they threaten other species with extinction. “They’ll gnaw through walls. They’ll gnaw through wires. They’ll destroy cars,” said Jason Munshi-South, a biologist at Fordham University. “They’ve managed to spread wherever there are humans.”

After spreading slowly for thousands of years, the scientists found, brown rats scampered over much of the planet in just the past three centuries. And once brown rats settle into a new city, the new study suggests, they repel all newcomers — a finding that could have big implications for our health. Dr. Munshi-South said the study emerged from a simple question: “What is a New York City rat, and where did it come from?” He contacted researchers around the world to see if he could obtain DNA to compare with that of the rats he captures around New York City. To his surprise, he ended up with samples from hundreds of brown rats, from the Galápagos Islands to Brazil, from New Zealand to Japan. Instead of simply asking where New York City’s brown rats came from, Dr. Munshi-South realized he might be able to figure out where the world’s brown rats came from. Emily E. Puckett, a postdoctoral researcher in his lab, analyzed the DNA samples, sorting 314 brown rats from 30 countries into clusters of genetic relatives. Eventually, she was able to determine how different populations of the rats mixed together over time. Dr. Puckett, Dr. Munshi-South and their colleagues published their findings last week in Proceedings of the Royal Society B Biological Sciences. The brown rat is sometimes called the Norway rat, but the new research confirms that the name is a misnomer. Instead, brown rats originated in northern China or Mongolia. Before they became our companions, they fed on wild plants and small animals on cold, open plains. Farming came relatively late to northern China, but at some point, native brown rats, finding a reliable food supply in their midst, switched to living on farms and in villages. Every week, we’ll bring you stories that capture the wonders of the human body, nature and the cosmos. Dr. Puckett and her colleagues can’t say how long brown rats remained in northern China, but at some point, they started to expand their range. Their first migration, the study suggests, took them to southeastern Asia. Much later, a wave of brown rats spread northeast, into Japan and Siberia. Another emigrated west, eventually reaching Europe in what appear to have been three major arrivals

CONTROLLING INTEREST on the Continent. These rats may have traveled on overland routes, or perhaps hidden on ships that sailed along the coasts of Asia and Europe. The new study suggests that brown rats were slower to spread around the globe than our other familiars, the black rat and the house mouse. Geography may be the reason: House mice originated in the Fertile Crescent, and black rats in India. Farming societies and widespread trade arose in those places much earlier than in northern China, giving the black rat and the house mouse early opportunities to travel. But in the past three centuries, the brown rat has more than made up for lost time. Brown rats in Alaska and along the Pacific Coast of the United States and Canada can trace much of their ancestry to Russia, Dr. Puckett and her colleagues found. Their ancestors may have stowed away aboard ships that traveled to fur-trapping communities in the New World in the 1700s and early 1800s. But the brown rats of Europe became the true globe-trotters. As Western European countries colonized other parts of the world, they took the rodents with them. The brown rats of New York and other Eastern American cities trace their ancestry to those in Western Europe. So do brown rats in South America, Africa, New Zealand, and isolated islands scattered across the Atlantic and Pacific. Even today, the ports of New York City are visited by rats from around the world. Before his new study, Dr. MunshiSouth had originally suspected that the city’s rats would have inherited a mix of genes from ancestors far and wide. But he and his colleagues found very little evidence of genetic mixing in New York, or in the other cities they studied. “You don’t see a lot of recent migrants arriving and reproducing,” he said. “There’s some force keeping them out.” Michael Kohn, an evolutionary biologist at Rice University, said the difficulties that brown rats now encountered in cities was intriguing. “It’s not hard to get there,” he said. “But it’s hard to get in.” The reason may be that brown rats are territorial and just plain mean, as Dr. Munshi-South often is reminded when he inspects the specimens caught in traps. Many of them bear the marks of fights with other brown rats.

If that’s true, then the new study also contains a strange paradox. As much as we dislike brown rats, they may be our staunchest defenders.

STUDY PROVES BED BUGS CAN INDUCE POTENTIALLY DEADLY SYSTEMIC REACTIONS IN HUMANS From PCT Online October 29, 2016 Bed Bugs Research A new report demonstrates that bed bugs (notably the common bed bug, Cimex lectularius) can induce a potentially dangerous (and possibly even deadly) systemic reaction in individuals repeatedly exposed to bed bugs. SUMMARY: Two bed bug researchers had been exposed to bed bug bites over time (either due to being bitten while working in active infestations or through voluntary exposure to maintain colonies). Both researchers after being bitten one day with relatively small bed bug numbers, developed a widespread rash with itching, indicative of a serious systemic reaction. Both were admitted to an emergency department for treatment and subsequently made a full recovery. One of the authors, Stephen Doggett of NSW Health Pathology, noted that this research demonstrates how bed bugs can be a serious threat to the health of the community. “If people are constantly exposed to bed bug bites (especially in low income housing), then the effects can be extremely deleterious to the individual,” he said.

ZIKA VIRUS ‘NOT CONTROLLABLE’ SAYS CDC’S DIRECTOR The director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently delivered a grim assessment of the government’s ability to contain Zika, saying it’s too late to stop the dangerous virus from spreading throughout the United States. “Zika and other diseases spread by (the Aedes aegypti mosquito) are really not controllable with current technologies,” CDC Director Thomas Frieden said. “We will see this become endemic in the hemisphere.”

“They’ve got scars, they’re missing eyes, they’re missing part of their tail,” he said. “Their life is fairly brutal.”

Speaking at the CityLab 2016 conference in Miami, FL, Frieden encouraged mayors and city officials in attendance to bolster mosquito control divisions, public health budgets and outreach to citizens to educate them about the looming threat.

The researchers now theorize that the first brown rats to show up in a city rapidly fill it up. Later, when bedraggled latecomers tumble out of ships in the city’s ports, the stronger residents rebuff them.

Frieden said the federal government is hamstrung when responding to public health emergencies like Zika, which can cause devastating birth defects in babies born to women infected while pregnant.

To Dr. Munshi-South, that’s good news. “It’s unlikely that a lot of diseases are going to be entering cities on rats walking into the local rat population,” he said.

Frieden said his agency has been forced to cut back on several programs in order to respond to Zika, including HIV testing and immunization programs. The agency also had to pull

back money from an ongoing program to prevent another Ebola outbreak in West Africa, he added.

only place where people have contracted the virus from local mosquitoes.

“We had to take money from every state in the country and give it to the states that needed it more for Zika,” Frieden said. “We do the best we can with the cards we’re dealt. But this shows how really important it is that there is emergency funding.”

Frieden said the first area hit, the popular Wynwood neighborhood of Miami, was able to remove itself from the active transmission list in part by conducting aerial mosquito spraying. The decision was controversial among local residents, who feared the health consequences of chemicals found in mosquito sprays.

The CDC receives a $14 billion annual budget, but Congress only allows the agency to use $2.5 million to respond to emergencies, leading to the drastic cuts in several programs, Frieden said. By comparison, Frieden had nearly $40 million in emergency funds as commissioner of the New York City Health Department, he said. The Federal Emergency Management Agency, meanwhile, has broad discretion over its $13 billion annual budget. The CDC, however, doesn’t have such flexibility. The agency must seek congressional approval anytime it responds to a public health emergency. The result: When Zika started reaching the U.S. earlier this year, the CDC requested an emergency spending bill from Congress, but partisan bickering led to a months-long delay before a $1.1 billion bill passed last month. Frieden also said the best-case scenario for finding a vaccine for Zika is “two to three years” away. The CDC director did have some encouraging news based on lessons learned in Miami-Dade County, the first and, so far, only U.S. county to experience local transmission of the virus. More than 4,000 people who acquired Zika while traveling abroad have been identified in 49 of 50 U.S. states — only Alaska has been spared. But Miami-Dade County remains the

But Frieden said the move wiped out the neighborhood’s mosquito population nearly overnight. “Literally within a day, the mosquito counts went to zero,” he said.

ASK MR. PEST CONTROL Field Mites QUESTION: I have a customer that had a severe field mouse problem. I eliminated the mice, completed a thorough pest proofing of the structure, removed basement insulation where the mice left a lot of droppings, and sanitized the basement sills. The customer is being bitten by house mouse mites. What do you recommend as the best pesticide to help eliminate these mites? ANSWER: More important than the pesticide is that you prove rodent mites are actually present by inspecting and placing sticky monitors in the areas your customer reports being bitten. If rodent mites are present, you know where to direct pesticide treatment and you’ve avoided a case of delusory parasitosis. Pyrethrin and pyrethroid products should work fine against rodent mites. Rodent mites will use wall voids and cracks from the infested area to search for another host.
