IT’S ABOUT BUILDING LIVES THAT MATTER
BUILDING LIVES THAT MATTER CONTINUED... students who will influence West Michigan and our world for Christ.” But, the campus was still missing something. Baseball. “I don’t believe a university should be without baseball,” said Jack. “It’s a good family sport. We just connect with it. We love baseball.”
IT’S NOT ABOUT BUILDINGS OR PROGRAMS.
In addition to a team and field, the De Witts realize the potential ministry their gift will help drive.
“IT’S ABOUT JESUS CHRIST AND HOW WE CAN GO OUT INTO THE WORLD AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE,” SAID JACK DE WITT, FOUNDER AND PRESIDENT OF REQUEST FOODS IN HOLLAND, MICH. The mission at Cornerstone is to empower men and women to excel as influencers in our world for Christ by offering a student-focused learning community where Jesus Christ is central. The addition of a chapel, media studies, music facility and a major baseball complex are important steps in efforts to fulfill this mission. Currently more than 1,280 undergraduate students worship in a make-shift chapel in the Hansen Athletic Center. While this has been somewhat effective, as the student body grows, the need for a permanent facility is significant.
SINCE COMING TO CORNERSTONE IN 2008, DR. JOE STOWELL HAS CAST THE VISION FOR CORNERSTONE TO HAVE A PERMANENT PLACE OF WORSHIP AS WELL AS SPACE FOR THE EXPANDING MEDIA STUDIES AND MUSIC DEPARTMENTS. “It’s the first thing I noticed when I initially walked the campus,” said Dr. Stowell, who became the 11th president of the University four years ago. “The University has no central place of worship.” In November the University community welcomed the De Witts to be part of a thanksgiving service that focused on the momentum that their generosity has given to these two timely opportunities.
The new facility will host high school tournaments, summer leagues and youth programs. The vision for the facility also includes major league baseball players conducting clinics and sharing their testimonies. A ground breaking for the new stadium took place Nov. 2 with plans to begin construction in April 2012. “This provision of God to advance CU’s vision will not be taken for granted, but rather invested in the lives of our students for maximum outcomes,” said Dr. Stowell. “It was special,” said Jack, after the morning service attended by students, faculty and staff. “It was a God moment just to see the kids singing together and worshiping.” Mary agreed.
Plans for the new chapel and media studies/music facility call for construction to begin in 2013. If you would like to invest in the baseball/residence facility or the chapel, visit www.cornerstone.edu/advancement.

“I felt the Holy Spirit,” she said. “I just wanted to hug every student. There is something special about this campus.” Jack felt it, too. “It was the perfect morning,” he said. “Using scripture and worship in the service. That is what it’s about here (at Cornerstone).”
For many years, the CU community has felt the need for a chapel facility where students, staff and faculty gather as one to worship and hear a word from God. In addition, the growing Media Studies division and Music department have anticipated a much-needed expansion and upgrade of their facilities. Thanks to Jack and Mary De Witt, Cornerstone University has received a major gift that kicks off a campaign to transition vision to reality as we move forward to capture this moment of opportunity.
The De Witts want the students to have a place to meditate and come together for worship.
We look forward to experiencing God’s goodness to us in providing this much-needed chapel, media studies and music facility.
“Every university ought to have a chapel,” said Mary. “Chapel is at the core of what we need today.” The couple had visited the campus years ago but recently began a relationship with Dr. Stowell, who shared some of the campus needs. After much prayer, the De Witts decided they wanted to give to this foundational facility on the Cornerstone campus. “Mary and I share a mutual interest in and enthusiasm for the mission and vision of Cornerstone University,” said Jack. “We are delighted to partner with the university’s leadership in the enterprise of graduating
ADVANCING THE VISION OF CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY THROUGH TWO STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITIES
CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY WAS RECENTLY BLESSED WITH A MAJOR GIFT FOR THE DYNAMIC RE-LAUNCH OF A BASEBALL PROGRAM AND BASEBALL FACILITY AS WELL AS A LONG-AWAITED CHAPEL, MEDIA STUDIES AND MUSIC BUILDING. GIVEN OUR UNIVERSITY’S COMMITMENT TO CULTIVATE A CHRIST-CENTERED ENVIRONMENT, THIS STRATEGIC OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A CENTRAL PLACE OF WORSHIP ON CAMPUS IS A MAJOR PRIORITY. ALSO, WITH OUR VISION TO EMPOWER STUDENTS TO INFLUENCE OUR WORLD FOR CHRIST, A BASEBALL PROGRAM THAT PROVIDES A PLATFORM FOR ADVANCING THIS VISION IS STRATEGIC.

In addition, the gift provides funds to launch a baseball program that will serve as a platform to influence West Michigan and our world for Christ. This includes constructing a magnet facility that will attract regional and national events to campus as well as wrapping a much-needed residence hall around the stadium. We are deeply grateful to our Lord for the initial gifts that have launched this campaign to enable us to move our vision forward. We continue to be grateful for your support of CU’s vision and ask you to give prayerful consideration to partnering with us as we continue to seek to advance Christ and His kingdom.
As Coach Mitroff recruits players, both nationally and locally, he is committed to not only finding studentathletes who will achieve excellence both on the field and in the classroom, but, also reflect Cornerstone’s mission to influence our world for Christ. Coach Mitroff is passionate about the opportunity to model and inspire players to grow in their relationship with God. “I don’t just want to invest in players’ athletic abilities while they are here, I want to invest in their character and spiritual growth,” said Mitroff. “The entire coaching staff wants them to go on to be the best fathers, husbands and employees after graduation.” In addition to having an impact on his own team, Mitroff plans to utilize the new program and baseball complex as a tool to have a greater Christian influence in West Michigan through hosting community and regional events, tournaments and clinics. To fulfill this vision, the program’s goals are: 1. To field a team of authentic followers of Jesus who are capable of competing at a high level so that the testimony of Christ can be displayed through them on a platform of excellence. 2. To disciple our players toward growth and effectiveness as followers of Christ which will enable them to both live and play baseball to the Glory of God . 3. To build a passion for global impact into the lives of our players. Each year our team will seek to advance the gospel globally by going overseas to minister through baseball by connecting with local missionaries and churches in countries like the Dominican Republic. 4. To build a facility that will attract both regional and national events to our campus in order to raise the profile of CU for student recruitment but more importantly to give us the opportunity to host players, families and friends in an environment that expresses the love of Christ as a witness to the power of His saving grace. 5. To fulfill our calling as a Christ-centered academic community by encouraging our athletes to excel in their class work and to make a positive contribution both academically and spiritually to the campus.
CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY IS PROUD TO WELCOME HEAD BASEBALL COACH DAVE MITROFF TO DEVELOP AND LEAD OUR NEW BASEBALL PROGRAM. AS THE HEAD COACH, HE WILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR DEVELOPING A START-UP PROGRAM AND RECRUITING A COMPETITIVE TEAM THAT FOCUSES ON REGIONAL AND GLOBAL OUTREACH.
6. To enhance the campus environment, our athletes will seek ways to serve fellow-students, faculty and staff as a testimony to their commitment to follow Christ. 7. To make an impact on our community by involvement in urban ministries and mentorship of younger players on travel teams and other opportunities to bring Christ into the lives of those we serve. Accomplishing these goals will enable Cornerstone University to fulfill its calling as a Christ-centered, globally aware learning community that is influencing the world for Christ, as it seeks to enable it’s athletes to ‘Build a Life That Matters.’
