Celebrating city’s maritime heritage Plymouth’s maritime heritage will be celebrated this month when the Ocean City Festival returns for the fifth year. The Ocean City Festival will celebrate everything that makes Plymouth’s waterfront location – and its relationship with the sea – so special, whilst establishing Plymouth’s reputation as Britain’s Ocean City. The festival offers an exciting programme of events which will appeal to all ages, offering a real variety including seafood and maritime cultural events, education, marine science and technology, plus many hands on activities for the whole family to enjoy. The festival also has a business side, which focuses on Plymouth’s diverse marine companies and expertise. To help you find out more about the festival we have a round up of many of the events which will be taking place in our popular What’s On section. Plymouth is not only famed for its maritime connections, it is also leading the way in terms of dementia awareness. There has been a huge amount of progress in recent years in helping to create a dementia friendly city. Now the city can boast one of the leading centres for research in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. You can read about the work of Re:Cognition Health and how to participate in their vital drug trials on pages 12 and 13. We also feature Chris Mervyn from leading independent estate agents Mansbridge Balment with his update on the city’s property market, while travel expert Anthony Goord looks at the lessons to be learned from the latest holiday company collapse. Hope you enjoy the latest issue!

11,500 People Live In Every Square Mile Of Plymouth – Is Plymouth Over Crowded?

Plymouth is already in the clutches of a population crisis that has now started to affect the quality of life of those living in Plymouth. There are simply not enough homes in Plymouth to house the greater number of people wanting to live in the city. The burden on public services is almost at breaking point with many parents unable to send their child to their first choice of primary or secondary school and the chances of getting a decent Dentist or GP Doctor Tony Carlton MNAEA Surgery next to nil. North Plymouth Well that’s what the papers would Branch Manager say.. but let’s look at real numbers, and in particular my specialist subject of Plymouth Property, with the housing issue in Plymouth. To start with, the UK has roughly 1,065 people per square mile – the second highest in Europe. The total area of Plymouth itself is 20.286 square miles and there are 234,900 Plymouth residents, meaning …

11,500 people live in each square mile of Plymouth, it’s no wonder we appear to be bursting at the seams! … but yet again, newspapers, politicians and property market bloggers quote big numbers to sell more newspapers, get elected or get people to read their blog (I recognize the irony!). A square mile is enormous, so the numbers look correspondingly large (and headline grabbing). Most people reading this will know what an ‘acre’ is, but those younger readers who don’t, it is an imperial unit of measurement for land and it is approximately 63 metres square.

since 2010 was a more modest 200,000 a year. However, since 2010, as a country, we have only been building between 140,000 and 150,000 houses a year. So where are we going to build these homes... because we have no space! Or do we?

Well, let me tell you this fascinating piece of information I found out recently in an official Government report. Looking specifically at England (as it is the most densely populated country of the Union), all the 20 million English homes cover only 1.1% of its land mass. That is not a typo, only one point one per cent (1.1%) of land in England is covered by residential property. In more detail, of all the land in the Country  Residential Houses and Flats 1.1%  Gardens 4.3%  Shops and Offices 0.7%  Highways (Roads and Paths) 2.3%  Railways 0.1%  Water (Rivers /Reservoirs) 2.6%  Industry, Military and other uses 1.4% .. leaving 88.5% as Open Countryside (and if you think about it, add to that the gardens, which are green spaces, and the country is 92.8% greenspace)

In Plymouth, only 16.50 people live in every acre of Plymouth … not as headline grabbing, but a lot closer to home and relative to everyday life, and if I am being honest, a figure that doesn’t seem that bad.

As a country, we have plenty of space to build more homes for the younger generation and the five million more homes needed in the next 20 years would use only 0.25% of the country’s land. Now I am not advocating building massive housing estates and 20 storey concrete and glass behemoth apartment blocks next to local beauty spots such as Plymouth Hoe or Burrator Reservoir, but with some clever planning and joined up thinking, we really do need to think outside the box when it comes to how we are going to build and house our children and our children’s children in the coming 50 years in Plymouth. If anyone has their own ideas, I would love to hear from you.

Yet, the issue at hand is, we need more homes building. In 2007, Tony Blair set a target that 240,000 homes a year needed to be built to keep up with the population growth, whilst the Tory’s new target

Advertorial

Dream of a kitchen! A couple from Saltash are enjoying the kitchen of their dreams - thanks to Plymouth-based Dream Kitchens. Ian Veale and his partner Gina Matthews moved into their four-bedroom detached home on the Pillmere estate two years ago - and decided early on that the kitchen needed attention. Gina said: “The kitchen was perfectly functional, but there was a lot of wasted space and we really wanted more storage and a more contemporary feel.” The couple carried out their own online research, finding out as much as they could about local kitchen companies. “We found two or three companies which seemed suitable, but in the end chose Dream Kitchens as they came highly recommended,” said Ian, who is an area manager with the NHS in Plymouth. Steve Short of Dream Kitchens said: “The kitchen is not huge at about 150 square feet, but we knew we could make a lot more use of the space.” The couple chose solid oak doors and cupboards with chrome handles and black granite sparkle effect worktops, with matching upstands.

Gina, who is a project manager with the Royal Mail, particularly wanted a range double oven and chose one from the Stoves range, complete with brushed aluminium splashback and extractor hood. Meanwhile Ian’s ‘must have’ American fridge-freezer also featured prominently in the couple’s wish list.

A built-in dishwasher, built in wine chiller and aluminium double sink are also featured. Steve’s team of experienced tradesmen took around four weeks to complete the kitchen transformation, which included new wiring, new ceiling complete with downlighters and porcelain slate effect floor tiles. The adjoining utility room was fitted with the same floor tiles as well as solid oak cupboards, one of which conceals the property’s gas boiler. A stainless steel Belfast sink is also featured. Gina said: “We are really pleased with the finished result. “We have so much more storage space now and my new oven is a delight. “We are very happy to recommend Dream Kitchens,” added Gina.

WOMEN AT WORK

A decade of helping people to feel good at Body Temple!

When Vikki Rolfe launched her Body Temple business 10 years ago at the age of 21 she admits she was taking a risk. But, with her passion for beauty therapy and the sheer joy she gets out of helping people to feel great, she decided to take the plunge – and she’s never looked back since. “I just had a gut instinct that this was the right thing for me to do,” said Vikki. “I had worked for other salons since I was 16 and I felt the time was right to do it. I remember making a shopping list of all the things I needed and I just went for it! “I love it, I really do,” she added. “I don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t do this. I’ve always been a people person and at the end of every day I feel good because the work I do is making other people feel really good about themselves.” She opened her first Body Temple salon in Hyde Park Road before moving seven years ago to her current salon upstairs at La Beau Nail Boutique in Peverell Park Road: “It’s got a lovely vibe here so it has been a really good move for me and for my clients.” Vikki offers all aspects of beauty therapy and male grooming, whether you want to look and feel your best or if you’re in need of some relaxation or treatment for aches and pains. From Dermalogica facials, spas, eye enhancements, manicures, feet therapy and hair removal to Studio lash lift, massages, self-tanning and make-up application, a trip to Body Temple will make you feel well and truly pampered. A party package is also available for up to six people. Vikki, whose qualifications include NVQ Levels 2 & 3 in Beauty Therapy and a Diploma in Beauty Therapy, is also an accredited Dermalogica Skin Care Expert. “The Dermalogica treatments are really popular,” she said. “They have a unique face-mapping technique which enables us to analyse the skin in every area of the face and neck so people are able to learn about their skin and how to look after it. “When most people go out and buy cleanser, toner and moisturiser they’re just using guess work. With this, we can find out what the core issue is so that people can have the skin care treatments and products that are right for them. “I have to say, this is my favourite treatment because the before and after results are amazing.” As part of Vikki’s initial Dermalogica face mapping

WOMEN AT WORK consultation, she offers advice on how to look after your skin and clients can take away free samples. Once they’ve tried them out, they can buy Dermalogica skin kits from Body Temple for £26: “This is great value,” said Vikki. “You use it in the morning and evening and it lasts a month – and you’ll know that you are using what’s right for you.” Vikki believes that one of the reasons why clients keep coming back and also recommend her to friends is because of the new treatments she introduces each year. The latest is the Lava Shells Relax Massage which is already becoming a big favourite with clients: “It’s amazing! You put a mineral teabag and a gel activator inside and it heats up within a minute and it stays hot for a long time. “The shape of the shells is brilliant for targeting the aches and pains trouble spots such as the shoulders. The feedback has been unbelievable, people are raving about it. They leave here feeling rejuvenated. And I love it too!” Normally £45 for a full 75-minute Lava Shells body massage or £28 for a 45-minute Lava Shells back massage, Vikki is offering £5 off to clients who present the voucher from this magazine. Vikki will be introducing the Lava Shells Rescue Massage next and she reckons it will be equally popular: “It uses hot lava shells and cold glacier shells and the combination is excellent for repairing muscles so it’s particularly good for

sportsmen and women. I love learning something new and I’m looking forward to sharing this very soon.” Walking into Vikki’s salon, you get the impression straight away that she enjoys being here every bit as much as her clients – even though she’s busier now than ever before: “I’ve never had a quiet year and this year has been amazing, touch wood” she said. “And it’s true, I am having a great time. I like listening to people and I genuinely care about how people feel. Some days I feel like I’m a therapist! But people like that, they like to be able to talk. And, even through a recession like the one we’ve had, people still want to look and feel good. It gives me a buzz that everyone leaves here feeling nice and chilled. “So yes, this is definitely the right job for me and I’m glad I followed my gut instinct 10 years ago!” Contact Vikki or visit her websites or the Vikki Body Temple Facebook page for information on treatments, gift vouchers and products, including Dermalogica skincare and Aloe Vera wellbeing drinks.

Advanced clinical trials for a range of different drugs which could help treat Alzheimer's are being undertaken by Re:Cognition Health, which opened its research facility at Plymouth Science Park earlier this year. Re:Cognition Health is the first centre of its kind in the South West and is headed up by clinical director Dr Stephen Pearson, who is acknowledged as one of the foremost experts in the study of dementia. Re:Cognition Health is a leading medical group with expertise in memory and other cognitive (thinking) problems and is currently participating in numerous global clinical trials for ground-breaking treatments for Alzheimer's disease and related conditions. Dr Pearson said that the launch of Re:Cognition Health had been welcomed by GPs in the city, who are now able to refer people to take part in the trials. Dementia is a global epidemic which currently affects 850,000 people in the UK. It is estimated that 25 million people in the UK have a friend or family member with dementia. Dr Pearson said: "There is so much to find out and understand about how our brains work and what goes wrong in diseases such as dementia. "These diseases are rising in prevalence as the whole population ages, which is a consequence of our success at helping everyone to live longer. As this disease becomes more prevalent the pressure to find treatments will become intense. There is literally no time to lose. "There is a lot about dementia we don't know, there is a lot about Alzheimer's we don't know – there are lots of different theories. So the trials we are undertaking are to try and find new and better treatments and also to help understand more about the condition itself." He said that Re:Cognition Health had chosen Plymouth as

the centre for research as it was the 'natural centre' for the South West Peninsula. "Devon has a spectacular problem with dementia because of the number of people who retire here and this is now compounded by the resident population also ageing. Although Plymouth has a younger population there are still more than 40,000 people over the age of 65 in the city and roughly 10 per cent of those will have dementia. This figure is likely to increase dramatically in the next 10 to 20 years. "We are all living longer and this why we are seeing a huge increase in the incidence of Alzheimer's disease. It is estimated that two-thirds of all people with dementia are aged over 80 and as many as one in 20 at the age of 65 have dementia. "It's an immense challenge for society because of the huge pressure it will increasingly put on health care resources." He said that one of the trials currently being undertaken could lead to the introduction of the first drug approved for the treatment of Alzheimer's in nearly 15 years. It is anticipated that the drug could be available as early as December 2017. "All the pharmaceutical companies are working hard on finding treatments that could help patients with Alzheimer's that it why research trials are so important. It is like searching for the Holy Grail to find a disease modifying treatment that can help people in future." He said that Re:Cognition was keen to recruit more participants onto its trials. "We want to hear from anyone who is concerned about their memory or that of someone close to them. "If you have a relative, close friend or colleague who you know is worried about early problems with their memory please contact us." He said that the trials - which are free of charge - are being fully funded by the pharmaceutical companies and travel expenses will be reimbursed for patients taking part. He said that the safety of trials was paramount and strictly regulated. Participants in the trial initially have a phone conversation with the Re:Cognition team to assess their suitability and commitment to the trials. They then have a full range of medical checks including blood tests and head scan. Participants are required to have a project partner or carer, often a spouse, who accompanies them during their visits to Re:Cognition Health, which can take place eight times in a year or may be more frequent. Dr Pearson said: "It's important that participants have a project partner to accompany them as they can provide valuable information on any effects the drugs may be having on the patient's cognition and function." The visits enable the Re:Cognition team to assess the person's progress with a range of blood tests, heart tracing, ECGs and cognitive testing. "Research trials enable people who are in the early stages of the disease to get access to world class treatments that may improve their quality of life."

Music and storytelling with Meridian in Plymouth

September is an exciting month for the art scene in Plymouth. For the fifth year running, we welcome the return of the spectacular Ocean City Festival which includes a wide range of cultural activities.

Sponsored by City College Plymouth, from September 11 to 25, many attractive events are taking place across our city. The Ocean City Festival celebrates everything that makes Plymouth’s waterfront location and its relationship with the sea so special, whilst establishing Plymouths reputation as Britain’s Ocean city. I was pleased to discover that the newly refurbished Mayflower Museum celebrates the story of Plymouth's role in the Pilgrims’ epic journey to the New World. You can explore the story of the Mayflower and the Pilgrim Father’s with informative exhibits and hands on activities which include dressing up and role play themed interactive games to plan your own Mayflower voyage. The museum also features a scale model of the Mayflower Ship and displays about the Pilgrims, their stories and their hometowns. There is a beautiful Sea Portraits Exhibition taking place in Drakes Place Gardens Colonnade Gallery where you can discover ‘a kaleidoscope of characters, as different from one another as

they are united by their passion for the blue environment’. Also taking part in the festival is a lady who aims to bring people together from different cultures and faiths through music and storytelling. I caught up with Kate Whyman and she told me: "Music has always been an important part of my life. I learnt piano and recorder at school and still play both but cello was the instrument I really fell in love with. I didn’t take the chance to take it up when I was young but held on to the hope that one day I might. "When I was 39 I thought ‘it’s now or never’ and nervously signed up for a trial lesson. I never looked back! Now I play in Plymouth Symphony Orchestra and the feeling of being part of a large group of musicians, all focussed on creating an amazing sound together is extraordinary. It takes me somewhere beyond ordinary. "Music can cross boundaries and touch the soul and it’s that experience of transcendence that I hope to make possible for others too." As Reverend of the Unitarian Church in Plymouth, Kate is opening her building to be part of the Ocean City Festival under the banner of ‘Meridian’ between September 16 and 18. Kate said: "We are providing an opportunity to champion local artists from different cultural backgrounds. We are delighted that Sarah Deere from the Cornish Harp Centre will lead the music with her stunning Celtic harp and ‘hands on’ harp workshops." Also taking part is Bev Smerdon the founder of LifePlay Learning. Bev has devised a range of community performances for adults and children. Bev will curate the storytelling alongside much loved local storytellers Abimbola Alao, who tells stories from African and Christian tradition and Liz Berg, founder of the Liskeard Speak-easy storytelling evenings, who tells from many traditions including Judaism.

And, with some 2,000 ‘likes’ on the Facebook page as well, Zuzimo! can safely claim to be a huge success story for the couple who are about to celebrate their third anniversary at the helm, Mo and Zuzi Vassif. For Mo, the sight of a busy restaurant and the stream of 5-star reviews on Tripadvisor is a vindication of his decision to open Zuzimo! at 153 Vauxhall Street when there were plenty of people advising him against the move. “There were four restaurants here before and they all closed down very quickly,” explained Mo. “Many people told us not to do it, that we wouldn’t survive, but here we are three years later and still growing. We now have a team of seven. It’s nice for us to say that we were right!” Mo and Zuzi both worked at other well-known restaurants in Plymouth before opening their own restaurant: “We got the keys in May 2013, did our first night for family and friends in the September and then opened it to the public on October 15 2013. “I remember turning the key in the door on our first day and thinking ‘what now?’ because we just didn’t know what to expect really. It was scary. But right from the start we’ve had great support from local people.” At the time of writing Zuzimo! is ranked 8th out of almost 500 restaurants in Plymouth on Tripadvisor, based on customer reviews. So why is the food going down so well, literally? Zuzi says it’s because of their unique ‘Food From Around the World’ concept. Although specialising in Persian, North African and Southern Mediterranean food, the multi-national mix of chefs at Zuzimo! can offer up dishes from different parts of the globe. Many of the reviews also comment on the friendly atmosphere and service.

FOOD MATTERS

Another reason for the restaurant’s popularity is that they try out new dishes on regular customers and listen to their feedback. And, says Zuzi, the customers generally have the final word on what stays on the menu, too: “We are here to serve them so what they say is the most important thing. We have taken a couple of dishes off in the past and customers have said ‘why have you done that? Bring it back!’ So we have. “I think another reason why people enjoy coming here is because you can treat yourself to a beautiful main course, or you can have a few tapas and a glass of wine for under £10.” Mo added: “We get a lot of return customers and we see them more as friends rather than customers. When we opened we wanted to have this sort of welcoming, friendly feel, we wanted to be somewhere where people can come and feel comfortable and it’s happened. And word of mouth has helped a lot, too.” The imaginative menu includes a selection of 17 tapas. On Tapas Tuesdays and Tapas Thursdays people can have three tapas and a glass of house wine for £9.95. Tapas parties are also popular, where for £17.50 a head, groups can enjoy unlimited tapas. The last Friday of each month is ‘Regional Evening’ where food from one particular region of the world is showcased and the monthly Persian evenings are so popular customers have to book well in advance to be sure of a table.

Stunning Waterfront Venue for any Occasion    

With half of the menu vegetarian and a large selection of vegan and gluten-free dishes, Zuzimo! lives up to its slogan of ‘Something for Everyone’. Among the most popular choices are Persian Skewers, with lamb, chicken and beef in saffron with steamed rice; traditional Moroccan tagines; Falafel wrap with chickpeas and a salad with tahini dressing; lamb steaks; crayfish and smoked bacon risotto and, of course the tapas featuring Spanish, Greek, Turkish, North African, Brazilian and Mexican dishes. The good news for customers is that Zuzimo! is once again open for lunches from 12 noon following the arrival of the newest member of the Zuzimo team, baby boy Timmy who • continued on next page www.cornerstonevision.com

and Christmas Day, when people can choose between traditional roast turkey or a dish from the ‘Around the World’ Christmas menu. And, from 17 October, Zuzimo! will be offering a delivery to your door service, after linking up with a third party delivery service. For Mo and Zuzi, it caps a busy 2016 – and a fabulous three years: “It’s the best feeling ever to see people come in and enjoy their evening and when we see them upload photos of our food to review sites and write such lovely comments, it makes us think ‘we did that’ – it’s fantastic. “We couldn’t be happier with how these three years have gone and we’re looking forward to celebrating the anniversary in October.” Zuzimo! is open for lunch and evening meals every day except Mondays. was born in June: “With four-year-old Toby as well we decided to have some family time during the day but we’re re-open for lunch again now,” explained Mo. The lunch menu has daily specials at £7.95 and the full tapas selection. Whatever food you order at Zuzimo!, it will be sustainably sourced and, wherever possible, locally supplied. The restaurant has also been awarded the highest 5-star hygiene rating. “All of our fish and meat is responsibly-sourced and can be traced back to its origin,” said Mo. “This was very important to us and I know it is also important for our customers. They enjoy great locally-sourced food which is reasonably priced and they also like the comfortable but elegant surroundings we have here.” The restaurant’s bar area can seat 20 people for those looking for an informal dining experience or perhaps just a glass of wine, while the restaurant area seats up to 70. Groups looking for a themed evening can book cuisine of their choice in advance – the Mexican party menu is particularly popular. Special occasions can also be catered for, including wedding parties. Plymouth Pavilions have announced that Kaiser Chiefs will return to the city with a new UK tour in 2017. Susanna has a spring in her step again Retired hospice nurse Susanna Griffith loves nothing better than a walk by the river in her home town of Totnes. But up until a few months ago Susanna could barely walk at all. She had suffered for years with problems in her feet, which became even worse when she contracted Parkinson’s disease four years ago. “I could hardly walk without hanging on to things and I was constantly falling over,” said Susanna. “I was in a very bad shape.” Susanna Griffith

She had suffered from metatarsalgia - a painful condition in the ball of the foot - for 10 years as well as arthritis and corns. This led to intense pain in her toes and also caused discomfort in her hips and lower back. “I had to take pain killers constantly to cope with daily life and it was getting harder and harder to get about,” said Susanna, who is 75. She regularly saw a podiatrist who blamed the problems on Susanna’s shoes. “I just couldn’t find the right shoes to help me cope with the pain,” she said. Her podiatrist eventually recommended that Susanna should visit Foot Solutions in Plymouth - and it proved totally life changing. Foot Solutions specially-trained staff used advanced technology to help identify the problems with Susanna’s gait and posture. She was supplied with customised arch supports and Stretch Walker shoes, which act like shock absorbers, supporting the joints in the feet. “I couldn’t believe the difference they have made,” said Susanna. “I call them the little hospitals on my feet!” Not only can Susanna now walk for miles without any pain at all, she also goes swimming, dancing and has joined an exercise class. “My specialist said I look 10 years younger - and I certainly feel so much better now. My posture has greatly improved and I love being able to walk whenever I want. “I can’t thank Foot Solutions enough. I hope more podiatrists will recommend them to their patients.” she added.

Remembering Diogenes An exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of Robert Lenkiewicz’s ‘The Diogenes Con Show’ (1976) is being presented by the Lenkiewicz Foundation at the New Street Gallery from September 23 to October 23. The exhibition will feature paintings, artefacts, unseen archive material and rare photographs about the relationship between Lenkiewicz and one his great muses the vagrant Diogenes (Edwin Mackenzie 1912-1984), focusing on the artist fascination with ‘memento mori’ (remember you will die). These challenging sociological and philosophical issues are as relevant today as they were in the late 60s, when Lenkiewicz first moved to Plymouth and began to paint Diogenes and other ‘down and outs’ in the city. Lenkiewicz saw in their chaotic lives a metaphor for Time’s indifference to human permanence and a rich vein of ‘Fool symbolism’, mocking our grandiose pretensions. TRAVEL MATTERS

Costly lessons learned from collapse of Lowcost Holidays

Photo: Fotolia © azureus70

Hindsight is a wonderful thing and it’s very easy to be wise after an incident by saying 'I told you so' but recent events in the travel industry left me feeling somewhat vindicated.

By Travel Expert Anthony Goord

I have been advising travellers for many years about the risks of booking holidays with tour operators who are not bonded by ATOL. A few weeks ago our travel industry witnessed the sudden collapse of Lowcost Holidays, one of the largest tour operator failures for

many years. It left some holidaymakers stranded abroad or having to pay for accommodation twice and others in disbelief that their holidays were lost and monies not covered in any way. I have always stressed the importance of ensuring that people check before booking that their holiday is ATOL bonded and that their travel agent is ABTA bonded. These crucial travel bonds are put in place essentially to protect your money should one of your travel providers cease trading for whatever reason. As we have seen with the fallout from the Lowcost Holidays collapse, although some travellers may consider it very unfortunate and unlikely to be affected in this way, bonding can make a significant difference to travellers caught up in such an event. It is obviously still disappointing for holidays to be cancelled at short notice but much worse to be hundreds of pounds out of pocket at the same time! This therefore begs the question, why are some people still booking with non-bonded tour operators?

44\

The Plymouth Magazine September 2016

I believe that there are two answers to this. Firstly, I feel that some people still do not truly understand the bonding process and appreciate the level of financial protection it offers – if they did, I am convinced that they would be more careful with their holiday choices and perhaps not quite as price driven. This leads me on to my second theory and that is simply that some holidaymakers will always book what they perceive to be the cheapest option without looking closely in to why it may be notably less expensive, the possible elements that are not included and the possible risks involved. If you find a holiday that appears to be significantly cheaper than most other comparable deals, my advice would always be to carefully scrutinise the level of bonding and elements that are included – beware because in most cases, if it looks too good to be true, it generally is! I would like to cover in a bit more detail the reasons why, when booking a holiday online or with an unfamiliar travel provider, you should always try and pay using your credit card if possible. As you will see, this doesn’t always offer 100% protection and is usually a little more expensive but it can be a great deal safer in the event that your travel arrangements become affected by a cancellation or company failure. Consumers hit by the collapse of Lowcost Holidays will largely depend on card providers for refunds but there is no certainty they will get their money back if they booked by debit card. Lowcost Travel ceased trading on July 15 with financial protection for almost 300,000 customers of Lowcost Holidays provided by a €1.3 million bond lodged with the Balearic Islands government. The company quit the UK ATOL scheme in 2013 leaving consumers unprotected by the • continued on next page Air Travel Trust fund, which

That being said, I still consider myself to be somewhat old fashioned as I prefer to meet my clients face to face because I feel this allows me to offer them a more personal service. Advances in technology and the internet have undoubtedly improved many aspects of our lifestyle but I still firmly believe that, as the owner of a local independent business, personal interaction with customers enables us to offer a service that beats any website. KITCHENS & BEDROOMS Faraday Mill

Fabulous new kitchen is just what the doctor ordered! A Plymouth couple who both work at Derriford Hospital have praised the excellent treatment they received when they decided to have a new kitchen. Paediatric consultant Myooren Wimalendra and his wife Emily, who is a paediatric nurse, moved into their detached Glenholt home at the end of 2013. Emily said: “We were not particularly

Tel: 01752 255022 www.kfkitchens.co.uk enquiries@kfkitchens.co.uk

happy with the layout of the kitchen. There was a lot of wasted space and a peninsula breakfast bar which really didn’t work well.” The couple visited two sets of neighbours who had recently had new kitchens installed in their search for a company to carry out the work. Myooren said: “They were both beautiful kitchens and we contacted both of the companies involved to talk through what we wanted. “It was KF Kitchens who impressed us enormously. Not only did they come up with some really excellent ideas, but were also able to give us a pretty precise guideline estimate of what the cost would be. “The other company were unwilling to give us an estimate as they said it depended on the final specification.” The couple spent several sessions with Nathan and Derinda Damarell at the spacious KF Kitchens showroom at Faraday Mill selecting the style of their new kitchen as well as choosing the appliances. “Nathan was brilliant,” said Emily. “He came up with some really positive design suggestions for our new kitchen which really took our breath away. “It was also lovely to sit down with Derinda and discuss the colour schemes and finishes available and then see them presented as 3D impressions through their CAD software. “Derinda was really helpful and between us we came up with a really stunning colour scheme. Nathan also designed the new kitchen to make the most of all the space - including, to our delight, an island with built in NEFF induction hob and extractor hood.” The couple chose a Cashmire

grey gloss finish for the majority of cupboards, doors and kitchen units, along with Avola Grey textured wood finish for a number of drawers and doors. A trio of eye-level NEFF ovens feature along the length of one wall, while another wall houses a built in Miele fridge, Smeg freezer and Artline pullout larder. The NEFF ovens, all featuring slide and hide doors, include a combination steam oven and two full size ovens featuring Circotherm technology. The NEFF appliances also include a fully-integrated built in dishwasher which has a nifty timelight device which projects the time left to finish the programme onto the floor. Myooren also chose a Quooker tap providing constant boiling water as part of a granite doublesink arrangement. Blanco Stellar Silestone quartz worktops installed by Mayflower Stone are featured throughout. New low energy lighting, a designer radiator in Anthracite grey, plinth heater and wood effect Karndean flooring completed the stunning new kitchen. Myooren said: “We couldn’t be happier with our wonderful new kitchen. The way the whole project was handled was exemplary from start to finish. They advised us it would take three weeks to complete the installation - and they were spot on. “The team of skilled tradesmen particularly their fitter Kevin - liaised closely with each other and with us throughout ensuring that there were no delays.” Emily added: “What could have been a very stressful time - particularly with our two young daughters - turned out to be a very pleasant experience. We are thrilled with KF Kitchens and can’t thank them enough.”

The Plymouth Magazine September 2016

Keep calm and carry on‌that's the advice for homeowners in Plymouth who may be thinking of selling or buying a property. In the wake of Brexit there has been plenty of speculation about property prices - but it's very much business as usual, according to Chris Mervyn, branch and marketing manager with Mansbridge Balment, one of the city's leading independent estate agents. Chris said that the property market in Plymouth remains buoyant with plenty of potential purchasers looking for the right property at the right price. "There is still a shortage of properties coming on to the market which has meant that prices have held up well, despite all the speculation after the Brexit vote. "The latest residential market survey by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) confirms that housing market activity in the region is showing positive signs with prices remaining strong and a marked increase in interest from new buyers," said Chris. "The key, as always, is ensuring that a property is priced realistically. Sadly, some vendors are tempted by inflated valuations from agents who create unrealistic expectations. "The end result is that the property doesn't sell and the price has to be dropped to attract interest from potential purchasers. It's all about getting the asking price right first time. "We have taken on a significant number of properties this year from homeowners who have found themselves in this position, having been let down by agents who over-priced their property. "Our vast experience of the Plymouth property market gained over the last 45 years enables us to provide realistic valuations which ensure vendors have the best chance of achieving the asking price for their property. "We place great emphasis on the quality of our customer service and this means that we benefit from a large following

from homeowners who have used our services all the way through their journey up the property ladder. "We are all passionate about what we do and firmly believe in the importance of traditional estate agency values - which is why customers come back to us time and time again and also recommend us to others," said Chris. He said that the introduction of a nine-point customer service promise and Sunday opening were examples of the company's willingness to go 'above and beyond' for customers and make it stand out from other estate agents. As a further innovation, Mansbridge Balment has recently launched an online valuation facility to give customers an instant guide price for their property. The initiative is part of the company's new direct marketing strategy designed to offer potential customers quick and easy access to its range of high quality property services. The online valuation tool is quick and easy to use with valuations based on Land Registry data. It can be found at http://mansbridgebalment.valpal.co.uk Turning to the financing of property purchases Chris said that the recent reduction in bank rate to 0.25 per cent was a welcome move that would hopefully stimulate more activity in the housing market. "I hope it will mean that banks and other lenders will make more funds available, particularly for first time buyers. There is a general misconception that mortgages are hard to come by. It's true that the eligibility criteria has changed in recent years, but there are still plenty of attractive mortgage products around."

Mansbridge Balment team join the Plymouth 10K Staff at Mansbridge Balment in Plymouth, keen to get fit and healthy, are under starter’s orders after joining a new company running club. The agency has a long tradition for taking part in key running events as part of its community engagement, in particular the city’s annual 10k event, which it is sponsoring once again this year. A number of staff have joined in previous 10K events and now other employees are keen to be in the running too! The result is the Mansbridge Balment Run Club. Chris Mervyn, the agency’s branch and marketing manager and a keen runner himself with local club Tamar Trotters, has taken a Plymouth City Council funded Leadership in Running course under the auspices of Athletics England. Chris said the course enabled him to support the staff properly as they take the all important first step. “I am delighted that more employees want to get in on the running action and it is only right that we give them the best possible chance to succeed,” said Chris. “An estate agent’s work can be very demanding so investing in employees’ health and well-being can only be beneficial.” “It is certain to help with team spirit and hopefully it will be a lot of fun too. The aim is to enter a team into the Plymouth 10k’s Corporate Challenge in October.” Entries are open for the Mansbridge Balment main sponsored Plymouth 10k online on www.runplymouth.co.uk www.cornerstonevision.com

CHARITY MATTERS From left to right - Dave Whitfield, Nicky Jones - Sibling Worker at Little Bridge House, Natalie Budd – Holiday Inn, Michael Wood – General Manager Holiday Inn, Nicola Hague and Paula Whitfield

Plymouth family’s fabulous fundraising for Children’s Hospice A Plymouth family that have been fundraising for Children’s Hospice South West following the death of their two year old grandson are celebrating as the charity has been able to buy a new vehicle. Dave Whitfield and his wife Paula, who run a B&B in Plymouth, organise a Memorial Dinner in memory of their grandson Ethan Hague every year and in March the event was held at the Holiday Inn, Plymouth. Almost £10,000 was raised at the black tie event through ticket sales as well as a raffle and auction. £1500 was donated to the charity Teddies for Loving Care and the remaining £8500 was donated to CHSW, which supported Dave’s grandson Ethan and the whole family through his battle with Tay-Sachs - an incurable genetic disease which he died from in 2011. Dave, Paula and their daughter, Ethan’s mum – Nicola Hague decided that this donation would start a fund for a new vehicle at Little Bridge House, CHSW’s children’s hospice in Barnstaple, to help transport children, especially siblings, on days out as well as in between their homes and the hospice. Following a substantial donation from another bereaved

family who were also supported by CHSW, this has made it viable for CHSW to buy a new seven seater vehicle for use by the Care Team and Sibling Team at Little Bridge House. Dave and his family have decided to continue their fundraising for CHSW, a charity close to their hearts, and will now be starting a fund for the upkeep of the cars and future purchases of a new vehicle when required. The fundraising continued at their Summer Party Fundraiser, also held at the Holiday Inn Plymouth in August. Dave, 58, said: “We have always received a fantastic amount of support from businesses, friends and family. The Holiday Inn management and staff have always been very helpful and they are giving us a donation at the Summer Party. My wife Paula and Holiday Inn manager Richard Newbury recently parachuted from 15,000 feet to help with our fundraising. “To be able to have purchased this car in Ethan’s Memory and keep it on the road and when the time comes be able to buy a new one is a wonderful feeling.” Michael Wood, general manager of Holiday Inn Plymouth said: “I am delighted to have been able to support this great charity and will continue to support them through my relationship with the Whitfield family.”

BUSINESS MATTERS The Jigsaw team...from left Neil, Clair, Ian and Paul

Beautiful fitted rooms that are made just for YOU! If you thought that a custom-made kitchen, bedroom or home office that was crafted locally by a family firm sounded too good to be true, then you’d be wrong! Jigsaw Interior Solutions offer all of the above and more from their showroom and workshop in Saltash, providing customers with the sort of quality and personal service that can’t be matched by the big chains. The firm is run by the Jarvis family – Paul, his daughter Clair and his nephew Ian. They set the business up four years ago this month, stepping in to take over Custom Made Interiors and giving it a new name. For Ian, it was a case of ‘from employee to co-owner’ as he had worked for the previous firm for some 20 years. While Ian is in charge of the manufacturing side of the business, Clair is ‘front of house’ in the showroom and Paul works closely with customers to design their dream kitchen, bedroom or home office: “People want a room to be perfect, they want units to fit spaces precisely and they want all the space to be fully utilised,” said Paul. “We can offer that because everything is custom-made specifically for the customer’s home. I’ll discuss their ideas with them and suggest design options,” he added. Much of Jigsaw Interior Solutions’ work comes via word of mouth and customer recommendations: “The majority of our orders come that way,” said Paul. “And people also like to deal

with local companies where they get a face-to-face service.” The first step is to either visit the showroom – which is just yards away from the Saltash Waitrose store – or book a home visit and a no-obligation quote. The showroom has fully built rooms to view, as well as brochures and worktop swatches. And, thanks to Paul’s 3-D CAD computer programme, customers are involved in their design right from the start: “It gives customers a very strong impression of how their room will look,” said Paul. “And whatever they want, they’ll get. We can even design rooms to match existing furniture. We enjoy designing unique pieces for customers, such as our kitchen islands which look stunning. “Things have changed a lot in recent years,” he added. “Homeowners are more discerning now and they want their rooms to look as stylish as possible.” Once your made-tomeasure room is designed, all the manufacturing work is done in the on-site workshop by Ian and colleague Neil Rogers. Some six weeks or so after booking the work, your rooms are ready to by fitted by Jigsaw’s own team of fitters and tradesmen. When it comes to appliances, Jigsaw Interior Solutions is a NEFF partner while other top brands include Bosch, Hotpoint, Indesit and Franke. For those whose rooms need an upgrade rather than a complete makeover, Jigsaw will also make replacement doors, units or work surfaces. With bedrooms and offices, storage

HEALTH MATTERS

New recruits Silas Keeling and Hannah Chambers

Two new faces at award-winning Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic is going from strength to strength, with the addition of a further two talented chiropractors to the team. Hannah Chambers and Silas Keeling joined the longestablished family-owned clinic on Mannamead Road this summer. The clinic’s reputation for excellence, which has earned it a number of professional awards, was a major factor in their decisions. For both, the move is already proving rewarding: “There is such a nurturing environment, it’s a pleasure to come in to work,” said Hannah, 29. “Everyone loves their jobs and loves their patients. The care here is 100% patient-centred, totally tailored to each person’s needs. “I was working at a chiropractic clinic in the West Midlands when they offered me the opportunity to join here and I wouldn’t have left my previous clinic for

54\

The Plymouth Magazine September 2016

anyone else,” she added. It’s a similar story for Silas, who was working in Totnes before moving to Plymouth: “Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic has got the best reputation around,” said Silas, 25, from Cornwall. “I was happy at my previous clinic but this was just a great move for me. It’s family-orientated and there’s a really positive, friendly vibe.” For Hannah, a career in health seemed the natural path to follow after a childhood experience which left her disabled until her late teens: “When I was 11 I became ill all of a sudden and I was in a wheelchair until I was 17,” she explained. “I was in and out of the NHS for over five years and they said it was all in my head. “In the end my mum took me to see a chiropractor who examined me and referred me to a neurologist. I was diagnosed with a neurological condition, so at last, I could receive the appropriate treatment

and I could walk again when I was 17. “I knew then that I wanted to work in a health profession which has a holistic approach.” Hannah and Silas both studied at the Welsh Institute in Cardiff and, like Hannah, Silas was also influenced by seeing the benefits of chiropractic care at first hand. “A friend of mine was told she wouldn’t be able to become a dancer because she had a painful scoliosis condition. She was on painkillers and was also very down because of the prognosis. “She eventually went to see a chiropractor and although you can’t reverse scoliosis, which is a lateral curve of the spine, you can manage the pain and prevent it from getting worse. With chiropractic care, she felt much better within four weeks. She came off painkillers and she was able to become a professional dancer. “I always wanted to work in health and seeing what chiropractic care can achieve was very powerful.” Hannah and Silas join Plymouth Chiropractic Clinic colleagues Jon Cook, Tom Swingewood and Wayne Whittingham, whose father Ken established the practice in 1972. In fact, Hannah went to university with Tom and it was he who suggested she would be a great addition to the team. Each of the chiropractors at the clinic has something different to offer patients. Hannah’s youngest patient is four weeks old and her oldest is 99: “She lives in the West Midlands and I still go back and treat her,” said Hannah. Her specialism is in treating pregnant women and babies, for which she has had additional training. Silas often sees people who are involved in sports, and he explained his approach: “I view everyone I see as a natural person, I take in the full holistic picture. I’ll advise on lifestyle and nutrition and we draw up exercise plans that are designed for each individual so people can also help themselves. I just love helping people to achieve their best in their lives by being healthy and pain-free. “There might be occasions when we think that a particular patient might benefit from seeing another member of the team,” he added, “in which case we suggest this because we will always do what is best for them.” If you feel that chiropractic care might help with pain, posture or general wellbeing, the first step is to book an initial visit. A full health history will be taken and orthopaedic, neurological and chiropractic tests carried out. If required, there will also be a thermoscan and digital x-rays. The chiropractor will assess the results and provide a written report at the second visit, when the results will be explained clearly and visually. An individual plan is recommended before the patient decides what course of action is best for them. Where a patient decides to go ahead with the recommended plan, regular adjustments over a set period of time will take place before a re-examination to assess progress. Silas says the process is extremely thorough: “Chiropractic care is safe and natural and there are lots of techniques we can use to achieve results. We’ll talk through all of those techniques so there’s no need to be nervous.” And, says Hannah, the benefits can be dramatic: “Proper spinal function is integral to everything, it affects all of your life. You sleep better, you’re more active, your overall health and wellbeing is better and you’re not in pain. “One of my patients had been taking painkillers for five years, which wasn’t actually fixing the problem. He’s now off painkillers and he said he took the kids to the beach for the first time in five years after being pretty much confined to the house because he was in so much pain. “Stories like that are very special. Seeing people get better is why we love our jobs so much.” Opening hours are 8am to 12 noon and 3pm to 7pm, Monday to Friday.

And, with all sessions already booked up for the 2016-17 year, it seems the nursery, part of the Plymouth Christian Centre in Embankment Road, has double cause to celebrate. They’ll be doing just that at 2pm on Saturday 17 September, with a cream tea in the nursery and a party in the centre’s hall next door. For the nursery’s Director of Children and Families, Liz Crudgington, the party is also a way of saying thank you to everyone who’s helped make it such a success: “It’s going to be a real celebration,” said Liz. “There’ll be a soft play area for the under-5s, bunting, balloons and cake, obviously! We want as many people as possible who’ve been associated with the nursery over the past 30 years to come along.” The nursery was established in September 1986 initially to offer a full-time service for mothers returning to work. It has since adapted to meet changing needs and now has sessions for three age groups: tiny tots (3 months to 2 years), toddlers (2-year-olds), and pre-school (children aged 3-4). Because of the nursery’s popularity, parents are advised to pre-register their tiny tots while mum is still pregnant and to pre-register 12 months in advance for children aged 2-4. “Most of our parents come to us through word of mouth,” said Liz. “We are a very friendly but professional nursery and we try to create a home from home environment. We’ll sit down for lunch or tea and have home-cooked food and we’ll have a quiet time after a meal. We’ll also play classical music during lunch, so it’s nice and calm while the children are eating.” Another ‘home from home’ activity, says deputy manager Amy Relf, is messy play: “We have lots of fun activities that involve mess, things like foam and water. We also have music and dancing. So we mix things up, which is how it would be if the children were at home. And we take the lead from the

EDUCATION MATTERS Carol Hannaford, principal of Stoke Damerel Community College, sponsor school of Scott College, with Martyn Cox, headteacher of Scott Medical and Healthcare College

Countdown to busy year for head of Plymouth’s newest school Martyn Cox is doing his best to make the very most of the summer holidays before the start of what is likely to be one of the busiest years of his life In little more than 12 months’ time Martyn will welcome the first students to Plymouth’s newest studio school Scott Medical and Healthcare College. He was recently appointed as headteacher of the school, which opens in September 2017, and one of his first duties was to travel to Buckingham Palace to attend a reception hosted by the Duke of York, who is the royal patron of the Studio Schools Trust. “I had a wonderful day at the Palace and it was very illuminating to hear the Duke’s views on studio schools and why he believes small schools like ours are the best place for some students to learn,” said Martyn, who was vice principal at Stoke Damerel Community College - the studio school’s sponsor - and has been part of the team setting up Scott College from the beginning. “It’s a unique experience and a privilege to be able to be the head of a school which I will have taken from the very first seed of an idea to the day, in just over a year’s time, when we have our first intake of Year 9 and Year 12 learners,” he said. “It seems incredible to think that we have our first open evening this month and I can’t wait to meet future students and their families and share my vision for the College with them.” Plans for the 375-student school - which will be purposebuilt in Stoke - were announced by the Department for Education in March last year and there will be an Open Evening on 28 September and an Open Day on 8 October, both at Stoke Damerel. Scott College will offer places to young people in Years 9

to 13 to develop highly-valued vocational skills for the wider healthcare sector. Studio schools are more like workplaces with a longer school day and classroom teaching combined with work placements. At first students will carry out work experience from half a day to a full day each week. “There is a consistent demand for well-trained healthcare professionals and our school will offer the best of both worlds,” said Martyn, who has worked at Stoke Damerel since 2003. “It’s a small school, offering high-quality teaching and state-of-the-art facilities as well as the opportunity for work placements with our outstanding healthcare partners. “Studio Schools also have greater freedom from the national curriculum and will not have to fit into the confines of teaching the EBacc at KS4.” Admitting pupils aged between 13 and 19, the studio school will be separate and distinct from Stoke Damerel whilst taking advantage of the economies of scale of being a part of a multi-academy trust. Applications can be made for places in Year 9 and Year 12 from 1 September 2016. Carol Hannaford, principal of Stoke Damerel Community College, said: “I am delighted to appoint such a well-qualified and experienced leader as the first headteacher of Scott College. “Martyn has a long history of success as Key Stage 5 vice principal at Stoke Damerel and I am so pleased that, against a nationally-advertised field, he was such a stunningly successful leader. “I know that students and parents will be excited at the prospect of a future career in the medical and healthcare sector – it is just what we need for our city.” Key to the vision for the school - which will offer a range

Martyn Cox, headteacher of Scott Medical and Healthcare College

of academic, vocational and professional qualifications - is its partnership with a number of local healthcare educators and practitioners who have been key in formulating the studio school’s unique and innovative curriculum. Partners include the Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD), the University’s Faculty of Health and Human Sciences and Plymouth NHS Hospitals Trust. Professor Greg Dix, Director of Nursing, Plymouth NHS Hospitals Trust said: “I am delighted with Martyn’s appointment and look forward to continuing my work with him and the wider Studio School Programme Board on the next phase of this exciting innovation.” Professor Robert Sneyd, Dean of PUPSMD, said: “We are tremendously privileged to be a partner in this venture and it is heartening to see it attract attention at the highest levels. We are looking forward to working with Martyn and his colleagues to create the health care professionals of the future. “ Executive Dean of the Faculty of Health and Human Sciences at Plymouth University, Professor Trish Livsey said: “It’s great that Martyn has been appointed headteacher designate for Scott College and I’ve no doubt he’ll do a fantastic job. “The college has an important role to play in helping students to learn more about health care and the skills needed to excel within associated professions, so I’m very much looking forward to working with him.”

PHOTOGRAPHY MATTERS

Sam’s winning photograph

Photographer Sam snaps up top prize in national competition An amateur photographer from Plymouth has won a prestigious national competition. Factory worker Sam Hussey beat off competition from hundreds of other photographers from all over the country to win the Jessops Share Your Summer competition. His winning image of a stunning sunset with hay bales has been exhibited in more than 50 Jessops high street stores across the UK. Share Your Summer is a campaign by camera and photography experts, Jessops, searching for the very best summer snaps to showcase in the windows of its stores. Sam was selected as the eighth winner and, after much deliberation, was plucked from the thousands of submissions to display his work in Jessops stores up and down the country. Sam’s distinctive photograph portrays a spontaneous sunset over tranquil countryside near Elfordleigh. Sam, 39, said that he first became interested in photography four years ago Sam Hussey pictured outside a Jessops however, he didn’t fully appreciate what he store with his winning image could achieve until joining a camera club. is here where he met fellow photography enthusiasts who taught him how to utilise his camera’s manual settings. “I have met some amazing people through photography who continually spur me on to go out and take lots of great images,” said Sam. “I love getting out in the great outdoors and shooting incredible landscapes. I have been to some amazing places which I would never have even known about if it wasn’t for my photography passion. “Sometimes I can come home with over 40 photos and sometimes I can come home with just one, and it’s the best feeling when you look at that one image that has the wow factor that makes it all worth the effort.” Sam, who lives in Whitleigh, said that he had entered a number of photographic competitions in the past and was ‘still in shock’ after receiving the news that he was a national winner. “I am really chuffed and would love to become a professional photographer some day.”

Colourfence going down a storm with homeowners!

David Baldchin of Colourfence Plymouth

They’re virtually maintenance free and they’re built to last for decades to come – and now Colourfence garden fences are available from a supplier and fitter right here in Plymouth. Made using one of the world’s most advanced steel products, Colourfence can stand up to wind gusts of 130mph and retains its colour through years of rain and shine. With some of the range carrying a 25-year guarantee, you can sit back and enjoy your garden and never have to worry about treating, painting or repairing your fence again. And, because it’s so sturdy and smooth, a Colourfence boundary will deter intruders and add extra security to any home. Colourfence Plymouth was set up in 2015 by David Baldchin, the local franchise in a global business that started in Australia, where the fences claim 40% of the market because they are termite-proof and are most effective as firebreaks. In the UK, they are proving increasingly popular with homeowners fed up with their fences blowing down during winter storms and needing constant care and attention.

62\

“Colourfence is the ultimate garden fence,” said Hartleybased David, who underwent specialist training with the company last year. “It’s the strongest fence on the market and it looks good too.” Colourfence is made from innovative Colorbond steel which has a Zincalume layer. This waterproof technology, combining zinc and aluminium oxides, means that even if you scratch or cut your fence, it will prevent any corrosion – so you don’t have to use any toxic materials to fix it: “A Colourfence won’t rot, warp or peel,” said David. “All you ever have to do is to give it an occasional hose down to keep it looking as good as new.” The steel is made in Australia before being shipped to the UK for the fences to be manufactured. David has been busy fitting them across Plymouth and South Devon throughout the summer and is gearing up for a hectic autumn: “It’s looking very busy because people want to get it done before the worst of the weather arrives,” said David. Because each fence is cut to fit, customers can choose the height, subject to planning permission if over 2-metres high. David said: “With wood, you’re told what the height of the fencing is. With Colourfence, it’s your

choice so it’s much more flexible. “I’ll visit your property and take the measurements and when it comes to fixing the fence, it’s made to measure and custom-built on site. It’s so convenient.” If you’re interested in switching to Colourfence, David will bring samples to your home and provide a noobligation quote. There are four colours to choose from or to mix and match: Evergreen, brown, bluestone and cream. With trellis tops, garden gates and other finishing touches also available, a Colourfence can even look perfect in a traditional English country garden. David says that so far the feedback from customers has been “unbelievable” and he predicted: “A lot of people in the UK might not be aware of Colourfence at the moment

but I believe it will become huge in the next few years. “People who’ve got a Colourfence love it and it’s easy to see why. Many of my customers either don’t have the time to be constantly maintaining their fences or it’s very hard work for them. Now they don’t have to worry about it. “And, once it’s done, it’s done.” Or, as the Aussies say: “No worries!” Contact David to learn more or to arrange a visit. GARDENING MATTERS WITH PLYMOUTH GARDEN CENTRE

‘Aster’ way to do it! September is great in the garden – it’s by far the best month for colour. The days are becoming shorter and nights longer and cooler, and that means the sun is lower in the sky and the light levels in the garden are at the perfect angle for show casing colour. The light spectrum is milder and less intense than it is in high summer, and this results in rich warm tones, that really allow bolder colours to shine and stand out. It also causes pastel tones to soften and blend, used in combination, some great contrasts can be created at this time of the year. It is the perfect time to enjoy the last throes of flowering from late perennials that become the shining stars in our gardens at this time of year. Plants such as Asters, Sedum and Rudbeckia will keep the colour going for another two months yet, so enjoy them, and if you don’t have any, then it’s not too late to plant them. It is a great time of year to fill gaps and get creative with colour. It is important to make sure they are well staked, as taller varieties are vulnerable to breaking in the rain and wind. These are also an excellent source of nectar and help to extend the season for the bees, butterflies and many other important insects. There is one group of plants that really come into their own in September and that is the family Asteraceae. This is one of the largest groups of plants there is and one of most floriferous. It is from the daisy family and includes everything from the humble lawn daisy to the statuesque sunflower. They are undoubtedly the highlight of the September garden. Asters, Rudbeckias, Echinaceas, Dahlias, Leucanthemums, Helenium and Anemones are all part of Asteraceae and are at their best in September. Asters are fantastic plants that come into their own in September, when the daisy like flowers smother the plants in shades of pink, mauve, purple, blue and white. They flower over a long period and come in a range of sizes, from 30cm (12ins) to 1.2m (48ins) in height with a spread of 30-60cm (1224ins). They grow well in most soil types, but prefer a position in full to partial shade in well-drained, fertile soil. Rudbeckias commonly known as Black Eyed Susans, are great late summer flowering perennials that produce large daisy flower heads with yellow petals that surround a black central cone. They are versatile plants and can be grown in a formal herbaceous planting or a naturalistic scheme where its seed heads add further structure and interest. It looks impressive between groups of grasses and other herbaceous perennials. They grow to a height of 60-90cm (23ft) with a spread of 60cm (2ft). Grow them in full sun in free draining soil. Recently new varieties have been introduced that offer new and bold colours that are incredibly free flowering. The Rudbeckia Summerinas are available in yellow, orange or a rusty brown colour. They can flower from July into early winter. Give them full sun and free draining soil and they will come back year after year. They are slightly smaller in height and spread than traditional rudbeckias, and they will grow to approximately to 45-60cm in height and spread. A close relative to Rudbeckias are Echinacea, the cone flower. One of the best plants at attracting butterflies into the garden, Echinaceas traditionally always came in white or pink, but in recent years, after intense hybridising by breeders,

there is a vast array of colours and flower shapes available. They come in white, pink, mauve, red, orange, and yellow, single flowers, semi-doubles and full doubles. There is one to cater for every taste now. They are easy to grow, provide they get plenty of sunlight and are planted in a well-drained soil. Growing to a height and spread of 3060cm (1-2ft) they look great spread through the front to mid sections of borders, as well as a centre piece in pots. Dahlias provide fantastic foliage and colour through late summer and autumn and are a superb addition to any border. There are many cultivars reaching various heights which makes them very versatile. Dahlia Bishop of Llandaff is shorter than some, reaching 90-120cm (3-4ft) and can be used to great effect at the front of the border where its dark purple foliage and bright red flowers contrasts wonderfully with other plants. Plant in welldrained, fertile soil in full sun for best results. One of the easiest perennials to grow is Leucanthemum. It is commonly known as the Shasta Daisy and has the iconic white daisy flowers. It is extremely free flowering, starting in June and making a continued great display in your borders and pots until October. They are trouble free and forgiving, and rarely succumb to diseases. They grow approximately to a height and spread of 60cm (2ft). They prefer full sun but will tolerate partial shade and grow in almost any soil type, but do prefer to be free draining. Japanese anemones (anemone huphensis) are the epitome of elegance in the late summer border. The flowers range from pure white to cerise pink with egg yolk-like, yellow centres and add a cool note when hotter colours abound.

Blooms are held on slender stems above an attractive mound of dark green foliage. It can cope with partial sun to shade, so is ideal for lighting up the back of a border. They are great for in the ground or in pots, and form clumps quickly. Depending on the variety, they can grow to a height and spread of 60-150cm (2-5ft). Very easy to grow and will flower well into November. A great plant for height at the back of the border is Helenium. It is a tall statuesque plant that produces tall stems in a clump with bunches of medium sized daisy flowers at the top. The flowers come in warm colours, from clear yellow, to orange, burnt red. They are bold and vibrant and make a great statement. They are fantastic for attracting bees into the garden and make great cut flowers. They can be grown in pots, but do better if grown in the ground, they like a moist, fertile soil that doesn’t dry out, but doesn’t waterlog. Grows to 1-1.5 (35ft) in height and 60cm (2ft) in spread. Grasses are great companion plants to the Asteracae family and provide interest to the autumn garden by adding texture, movement and sound. They are very versatile and can be used in mixed borders, herbaceous plantings or in a naturalistic scheme. Pennisetum Rubra is a compact variety of grass and is therefore a better selection for many gardens and pots. From late summer, strong stems emerge with burgundy plumes with plum red leaves that produce a dazzling display, particularly effective against a brightly coloured flowers.
