Vital work of ‘Third Sector’ Charities and other voluntary organisations provide an incredible range of services and support for people of all ages in Plymouth. With the continuing cuts in local authority budgets, there is more and more pressure on the ‘third sector’ - as charitable organisations are collectively known - to fill the void. Plymouth benefits from the combined efforts and commitment of a host of national charities - and an increasing number of locallybased charities which have been established to meet specific local needs. One such Plymouth charity is Friends & Families of Special Children which provides muchneeded information, support and services for families with disabled children. It was established in 2002 by a small group of parents who identified a huge gap in service provision for children with disabilities and their families. This wonderful Barbican-based charity has recently received a double boost - firstly confirmation that it has been granted five years of funding from the Big National Lottery Fund, allowing the charity to continue and develop its services in the city. Secondly, its founder and current chair Kay O’Shaughnessy has been named as Inspirational Woman of the Year. It’s a fitting recognition for not only Kay but also the charity which has been called a ‘life saver’ by many families. Sadly, the current austerity measures often hit the most vulnerable members of our communities the hardest and in some ways it is a sad indictment of our society that charities and voluntary organisations are all too often meeting those needs. We will continue to report on the successes of local charities in coming issues. And look out for a bumper Christmas Guide in our next issue!

Jan puts the dark days of job losses behind her to bring colour into her clients’ lives A Devon woman who lost three jobs in a row that she loved in circumstances beyond her control is now a highly respected stylist who helps transform her client’s lives and their wardrobes.

Red is the colour -but which red suits you best As the colour to wear this coming autumn and winter, red has been all over the catwalks and is making its own grand entrance in the high street shops, but does everyone suit red? Jan explains who can wear what red. 1. Primary true red is the only colour that suits everyone. 2. When looking at the whole range of red on offer, if you find the correct tones for your natural colouring it will work wonders for you. You can compare tones of red by holding them against your face to see which ones lift you and which drain you. The most effective way to know which shades of red truly suit you, is to professionally have your colours analysed. 3. Even within a season palette different people have distinct wow colours, but summer palettes cut a dash in cherry and coral red, autumns glow in rust or brick reds, winters

Some people find wearing red too overwhelming to wear as a block colour, so using it as an accent of colour in a scarf, jewellery, or as a lipstick is often beautifully effective. 5. Teaming red with a neutral from your season’s palette such as grey, navy, black, cream, beige, tan or white looks effortlessly stylish, but remember you need the right red with the right neutrals that suit you!

KITCHENS & BEDROOMS Faraday Mill

KF Kitchens make it 3rd time lucky for Jude and Andy! After 20 years with their dark oak and black granite kitchen, Andy and Jude Hext from Yelverton decided it was time to brighten things up a bit with a brand new kitchen. But where to go, with so many options to choose from? For Andy and Jude, it was a case of third time lucky when they visited KF Kitchens’ Plymouth showroom at Faraday Mill in Cattedown. “We’d already had two companies in to see us,” explained Jude. “I was adamant that I wanted everything to go – except the Rangemaster cooker. I was determined to keep that. So they both came back with their designs and they’d basically built the kitchen around the Rangemaster. The lay-out of the kitchen was more or less the same. “Then Nathan from KF Kitchens came in and put me right straight away! He said ‘that’s got to go’. Trust me, you can’t have that cooker there. You’ve got to be facing your garden and your guests’. So with Nathan it wasn’t a case of just coming in and measuring up. He was very passionate about his work and you could tell that he loves his job. “It was his ideas and enthusiasm that sold the kitchen, really. His ideas

Tel: 01752 255022 www.kfkitchens.co.uk enquiries@kfkitchens.co.uk

were so different to ours, but he was right and we were wrong. He was inspirational. “The design was a developing process. We basically gave him a blank canvas but he and Derinda at KF Kitchens talked everything through with us at every stage and showed us how the kitchen would look on their computer. We had quite a few visits to the showroom; everything was done meticulously.” All the shaker-style drawers and cupboards were built bespoke and painted a very light grey, while the work surface is Silestone. The corner units include a pull-out mechanism and the larder unit includes a VauthSagel larder that rotates when pulled out so nothing is ever out of reach. Jude and Andy chose NEFF appliances: an induction hob on a centre island; integrated fridgefreezer; integrated dishwasher; wine cooler; and three ovens that include combination microwave and added steam facilities. For added ease of use, the oven doors open and slide into a slot beneath. There’s even a warming drawer. And, hidden away under the island, is a draw that opens out to reveal a built-in ironing board. The beautiful flooring is distressed

oak by Karndean, while the finishing touch is added by the Quooker tap which provides instant boiled water – no more putting the kettle on for a cuppa! Designing a dream kitchen is one thing; fitting it is another. Again, KF Kitchens surpassed all expectations: “What we really liked about them was that they encompassed the whole project,” said Jude. “They did the whole works themselves, not just the fitting, but the flooring, the plastering, the plumbing, the decorating and the electrics. Once you have a price that’s it, there are no nasty shocks with bits being added on along the way. “They also organised the Silestone worktops from Mayflower Stone. Everything went like clockwork. It was a three-week job and there were no gaps. And our kitchen fitter, Gary, was absolutely brilliant.” The work was carried out in the Spring. A few months on, are they still happy with their new kitchen? “Oh yes, we love it,” said Jude. “You can see how light the room is now. And it’s dead easy to keep tidy because we now have so much more storage space. It’s going to make cooking at Christmas a whole lot easier, too. “It’s just a beautiful room and we’re so pleased that we’ve done it. And that we listened to Nathan’s advice! We would certainly recommend KF Kitchens to other people.”

WOMEN AT WORK

Kay celebrates being named National Inspirational Woman of the Year! Meet the 2017 National Inspirational Woman of the Year – Plymouth’s very own Kay O’Shaughnessy, founder and chair of the charity, Friends & Families of Special Children. Kay’s achievements have been recognised by the NatWest Venus Awards, known as The Working Women’s Oscars. She won the award after being nominated by the Duke of Cornwall’s director of marketing, Leila Nottage: “I was amongst lots of other women who balance work and family life so I feel very honoured to win the award,” Kay told the Plymouth Magazine. “As well as being thrilled to get it on a personal level, I was thrilled for the charity and all of the people who have helped me to grow and develop it. I hope that winning the award will help grow the charity’s profile in the city.” Friends & Families of Special Children was launched in 2002, initially as a support group by parents with disabled children. It gained charity status in 2006 and now helps 750 families each year – a number that’s growing all the time. Kay and her husband Michael know how hard it can be for families with disabled children to access the support they need. Their daughter Amy, who will be 20 in December, is profoundly disabled and requires 24-hour care. The couple also have three healthy sons. In the Q&A Kay was asked to submit to the award judges, she said: “Like all families, life is very busy, hectic and frantic. It would be too easy to say I’m too busy or too exhausted to carry on running the charity but I am driven to ensure that we make the lives of families like mine easier and ensure they feel supported and valued.” Kay couldn’t attend the national awards event because of her caring commitments. But in a letter to her, the category sponsors, Exeter University Business School, described her as “kind and genuine” and “a deserving winner.” The letter added: “You really are an inspirational woman.” The award coincides with more great news for the charity, which has just received additional backing from its two main funders, the Big Lottery and BBC Children in Need. The Lottery’s Reaching Communities funding is for the next five years and will go towards brand new projects,

10\

The Plymouth Magazine October 2017

Above: Kay O’Shaughnessy and, below left, one of the children enjoying one of the charity’s activities at Mount Batten

while Children in Need has extended its funding for a further three years. Reaching Communities provides funding for projects which help “people and communities most in need”. At Friends & Families of Special Children, some of the money will go towards a new project called ‘Making Sense,’ which will help families with children with sensory disabilities. It will also enable a lending library of specialist toys and equipment at the charity’s premises at The Virginia House Centre in Palace Street, Bretonside. Kay explained: “A lot of specialist equipment is very expensive and just not affordable for many families, particularly as they might invest in an item only to find that it’s not quite right.” Three new staff are set to be employed “any time now” to help run the new projects, boosting staff numbers to eight. Earlier this year, the charity – which also has a team of

WOMEN AT WORK volunteers – was able to take on a fundraiser, Hannah Whiting. One of the new team will work alongside Grace Russell, whose workload as Disability Information and Advice Support Worker has increased as more families seek help: “The work that Grace does is tremendously important,” said Kay. “People come to us in despair, battling red tape to try and access their benefits or grants. “We have a 98% success rate in getting families the grants they’re entitled to and we’ve helped families to be rehoused into more suitable accommodation after they’ve struggled for years without success, so we have managed to achieve great things.” Uniquely, Friends & Families of Special Children offers support to every family member, not just as a family, but individually. For example, the Fun and Freedom Club organises events and days out for young carers who help a sibling or parent. A grant from the People’s Health Trust will extend the charity’s work with young carers in the city. Youth Adventures is an opportunity for children aged 14 or over and who have a disability to socialise and make new

friends. It also provides advice, information and emotional support. Face 2 Face is a befriending service, connecting volunteer parents of children with a special need or disability with others who need someone to talk to. Other projects include the A Team, for parents and carers who have children with autism, ADHD, challenging behaviour and learning disabilities. The charity is now hosting more training events and conferences, such as sign language and how to cope with challenging behaviour. These are led by nationally and internationally renowned speakers and attended not just by families, but by professionals from local statutory authorities, too. It’s been a good year all round for Friends & Families of Special Children because it has also been the charity of the year for both Wolferstans Solicitors and Nuffield Health. However, Kay stressed: “Most of the grants we receive are restricted to specific projects but all the other work we do must carry on as well. We are always looking for more support from local businesses, simply because of the increasing number of families needing our help.” And she added: “When families come to us, they’re often in a world of negativity. They’re not getting any sleep, they’re exhausted, they don’t know who to turn to and they can’t see any light at the end of the tunnel. “We show them that it is possible to bring light, hope and positivity into their lives. And fun, which is very important. Families tell us that they learn a lot from each other, that they don’t feel so isolated and that they are able to inject some normality into their lives. “Some have described our services as a life saver and that makes me feel very proud of what we do.”

ART MATTERS

Internationally-renowned Plymouth artist Barbara shows her love for the city with local exhibition Plymouth art lovers will be in their element in October when a new exhibition opens in the city. After 11 previous solo shows around the world, international artist Barbara de Mora, is holding an exhibition of paintings to celebrate living in the city with more than 40 pictures of local life round and about Plymouth’s shoreline. Entitled ‘Loving Land and Sea’, the exhibition is taking place at the Gallery at Devonport Guildhall from October 5 to 28. It takes a delightful romp along the coast and quays of Plymouth. This collection promises a display of imaginative snapshots of local life, with canny observations of local harbours and characters touched lightly with humour. Each picture has an element of fun and mystery, as well as its own slant on the meaning of shoreline communities. Many of the pictures tell a story, too. Barbara has a long-term connection with the area, having

12\

had close family living in Plymouth since 1984. She remembers visiting the beautiful vista of the harbour and the quaint Barbican streets in the 1990s. However, when her husband, Stephen de Mora, was appointed chief executive at Plymouth Marine Laboratory, the world-leading scientific research institute based on the Hoe, they relocated to Plymouth in 2008. At that time, Steve and Barbara rented rooms on Athenaeum Street, close to Beryl Cook’s residence. Locals delighted in telling Barbara how they remembered Beryl leaning out a window on the upper floor to chat as they passed by. Now Plymouth residents for almost 10 years, Barbara Artist Barbara de Mora and Steve are happily settled and have developed a fondness for all that the area has to offer. One of the reasons for staying is that Barbara continues to find inspiration in the beauty of the harbour, the friendliness of the people, and the scenery of the moors. Hopefully, the association between land, sky and sea will continue to inspire her work, and the growing reputation developed in so many other countries will finally find a home. Barbara has described her latest paintings as magical and illustrative. “They are colourful and cheerful,” she said, “showing people, animals and birds, and the relationships between them. You might even find a mermaid or two watching the shoreline activity! Barbara loves to paint water and has developed intriguing glazing techniques to show what may lie beneath the surface.” While Barbara has her own truly original style, the British artists Beryl Cook and Stanley Spencer have been a big influence on her illustrations of people. In addition, her creative expression comes from the landscapes of the Group of Seven in Canada and unique feminism of Frida Kahlo’s work. One of her most valued teachers, Lois McIvor from New Zealand showed Barbara that it is not so much what you see on the outside that is important, but channeling an emotional response to a subject into a painting to bring about the most satisfactory results. Visitors to the exhibition will find quality illustration with beautiful brushwork and painting skills; pictures that make you smile first, then think afterwards.

FOOD MATTERS The Jolly Jacks team. Photo by Alex Allwood

With its sunny terrace outside and roaring log fire inside, Jolly Jacks waterfront bar, bistro and restaurant at Mayflower Marina is the place to go, whatever the weather. And, with distinct bar and restaurant areas that scream ‘come on in’, the bistro in Richmond Walk is a place for all occasions too, whether it’s breakfast, lunch, dinner, celebration or simply a drink. It’s easy to see how the now thriving bistro has become a honeypot for anyone who enjoys a touch of ambience to go with their food. If you look out over the marina, there are views across the river to the Royal William Yard, while just outside Jolly Jacks is the South West Coast Path at Mount Wise. ‘JJs’ as it’s known to regulars, has enjoyed a wonderful busy summer with plenty of long al fresco days enjoying local fresh fare and a chilled glass or two of something nice. Now, it’s time to stoke up the fire and start preparing for the next big holiday period: Christmas. The two friends behind the success story are Sally Baum and Sue Robson, who had the vision and drive to take over the premises in 2010 even though it required a complete makeover. Some thought they were mad to even take it on: “I remember being in here refurbishing the place and people would come in and say ‘oh, it’ll never survive a winter’,” said Sally. “But we never intended Jolly Jacks to be a marina bar; we always had a vision of it being much more than that, with something for everyone to enjoy.” Sally and Sue go back a long way, first meeting when they worked as 15-year-olds in the same restaurant in their home county of Leicestershire. Their paths continued to cross over the years, and Sue met her husband David while working in a restaurant owned by Sally’s sister. Some years later they bumped into each other again – an encounter that would lead to them opening Jolly Jacks. “Fate has played a hand in all of this,” said Sally. “When I bumped into Sue, she and David were about to go on their yacht, Parson Jack, from Mayflower Marina down to Gran Canaria. I sort of invited myself along and it was then that we chatted about what we’d do if we had the chance to take over the café at the marina. Lo and behold, a few months later, it became available. We both loved Plymouth, so we upped sticks with our families and moved down. “At first, we didn’t know a soul, so while we were doing the place up, we were also finding out where to source quality produce and where to hire the best staff. Jolly Jacks – Plym waterfront venue But we could see the potential and having both been in the restaurant industry pretty much all our lives, we knew what we were doing.” Sally added: “I think what we’ve created here is pretty unique. We wanted to turn it into the sort of place where we’d want to go ourselves, somewhere with a warm, friendly and relaxing atmosphere, with quality food and drink.” It’s safe to say they’ve achieved just that. Since opening, Jolly Jacks has established a reputation for both its food and ambience: “We source our produce locally, always have done,” said Sally. “It’s all fresh, nothing is frozen, and we have very talented chefs that produce beautiful dishes of food.” Led by head chef Chris Scantlebury, the kitchen team starts at 9am for the breakfast shift up to 11.30am. The main menu is from 12 noon and the food service doesn’t stop until 9pm. The most popular dishes are beer-battered fish and hand cut chips with mushy peas and tartare sauce; 8oz steak burger topped with cheddar cheese, smoked bacon, homemade chips and tomato chutney; homemade pie of the day; local mussels; and the daily seafood specials. The Sunday roast is popular too, with service starting at 12.30 each Sunday and carrying on all day until the food runs out! Local ales and ciders are available on tap and the wines are carefully selected from two suppliers. There are some wines here that you won’t find anywhere else in Plymouth. The menu and daily specials will still be available during the festive period, alongside the Christmas party menu that starts at the

As well as the traditional Christmas dinner with local turkey, other options include Plymouth Gin, cranberry and orange-cured salmon for starter, pan-roasted sea bass fillet, crab and prawn risotto and crispy calamari rings for main, and chocolate, cherry and pistachio brownie with cherry Bakewell ice cream for dessert. Pre-ordering is essential. “Jolly Jacks is always a very special place at Christmas,” said Sally. “We get the place all decked out and we have a tree on the terrace. We really get into the spirit of things. We want people to have a nice, fun time.” It’s that friendly ambience that’s led to many friendships being formed among customers and staff. The crew, headed by senior supervisor/bar manager Carl Johnson, has some members who’ve worked here since Day 1: “The team we have here is fantastic. They have something that you can’t train, which is personality and character,” said Sally. “It’s a really social place and a nice caring sort of place, too. Everyone is welcome. You can dress up or you can come as you are, we accommodate everyone.” The one occasion where you will want to dress up is the New Year’s Eve dinner and party (£75). This year’s event has a theme of ‘Simply Stylish’, with a 5-course meal, drink on arrival and music from swing and blues singer Michael Campari. Visit the Jolly Jacks website and Facebook page for updates and information on upcoming events, including Christmas JUGs (Just Us Girls), where local craftswomen get the chance to sell their hand-made gifts. Nick has over 30 years’ experience and his great strength is understanding each individual person’s needs. He uses only the very best materials coupled with the most advanced manufacturing techniques to ensure he is able to produce the most comfortable fitting denture giving a very natural smile. The only way Nick can gain an understanding of each person’s denture concerns and future wishes is by spending time with you discussing these issues. He offers a completely FREE CONSULTATION to all clients. Nick will discuss with you all possible treatment options; he is able to show you examples of all types of dentures and has a library of real life client before and BEFORE after pictures. When a client wishes to go ahead appointments will be made to start their denture journey. It usually takes 5/6 appointments to complete each denture. Nick carries out all the work, both the appointments in the clinic and makes your denture himself. Nick takes great care and AFTER time using an advanced impression technique to produce the most accurate results thus ensuring the best most comfortable fit possible for you. Nick will then register your bite and correct the lip support often

denture wearers find that the top lip has collapsed. To do this Nick carefully shapes a wax block BEFORE until the desired lip support is achieved. Nick will at this stage discuss with you the colour, shape and arrangement of the teeth. The next stage is to skilfully place the teeth in position, he does this by placing them individually in wax, and using his lifetime of experience Nick is able to create the most natural life like AFTER appearance. He often uses an old photograph of how your natural teeth once were to replicate what nature created. At the next appointment, the trial dentures which are wax versions are placed into the mouth for the initial try in. Nick can then check your bite and the position of the teeth with you. He is able to do this at chair side taking your comments on board. Nick then returns to the lab to carry out any corrections that are required, he will also shape the gum work fully to replicate your natural tissue. Nick suggests that you bring a close friend or relative to the next appointment to help you confirm that you are completely happy with the arrangement of the teeth before they are finished. Nick then prepares the dentures to be converted from wax to acrylic. Using the latest high tech injection moulding techniques the dentures are processed. This processing technique ensures a much better fit and maximum comfort. During this processing the gum work is very skilfully coloured by hand, this time consuming art helps to create a totally natural gum work to enhance the life like appearance of the teeth. This leads to the most exciting appointment; your dentures are ready to be fitted. Nick will fit your dentures and make any minor adjustments at chair side. He will discuss with you how to “bed” the dentures in and how to keep them clean. Nick then always arranges a follow up appointment to see how you are getting on with your new dentures.

COMEDY SHOWS Comedy fans will be enjoying screams of laughter when the Plymouth Comedy Club stage their Halloween event at the end of October. The show on Saturday October 28 at the Plymouth Athenaeum features Stuart Goldsmith, George Rigden and Tony Jameson with resident MC Chris Brooker. Headline act Stuart Goldsmith is instantly recognisable to any fans of ITV’s Last Comic Standing. Coming within a whisker of winning the whole thing, Stuart is also the man behind the fantastic Comedian’s Comedian podcast, recognised all across the world as one of the finest podcasts about the comedy world. Stuart is a world class, world travelled artist who is going to close the show in his trademark style. Support comes in the shape of the abrasive and outrageous George Rigden as well as the contrastingly charming Tony Jameson. As ever, the night will be held together by resident MC Chris Brooker. Tickets are on sale in advance Tony Jameson from plymouthcomedyclub.co.uk and, as the winter months are peak times for comedy it is highly recommended to purchase up front to avoid missing out. Special group deal available: buy ten tickets and pay for nine. Youngsters can get their share of mirth too with a special show at lunchtime on October 28, starting at 1pm. MC Chris Brooker will introduce Stuart Goldsmith, a veteran of kids comedy clubs from Edinburgh to Penzance, who is sure to tickle funny bones of all ages. Tony Jameson’s wicked, offbeat humour thrives in front of a young audience, many of whom may well prove to be more mature than he is! It’s not dumbed down, it’s not comedy with the good bits taken out... It’s a stellar hour of world class mirth for all the family and this line up is not to be missed.

Fast forward to now and I am delighted to say that here in Plymouth, the first timers are still beating a path to our door. There’s young dockyard apprentices and also naval ratings taking advantage of the force’s Help to Buy scheme. They have some real spending power too thanks, in part, to the new trend of the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad’. We are seeing first time purchases of anything between £150,000 and £300,000. Clearly home ownership isn’t the impossible dream it seemed just a couple of years ago. WHAT’S ON A series of controversial films which were either banned or heavily censored on their release are to be shown during Peninsula Arts autumn season, which carries the theme of ‘revolution’. One of the most famous silent films ever made, Battleship Potemkin directed by Sergei Eisenstein, tops the bill during a season which includes films from Russia, Italy, Sweden, the United States and even Plymouth itself. Also on the roster are Salo: 120 Days of Sodom – which was initially banned in the UK and only passed for uncut release in 2000 – and Freaks, a 1932 film deemed so shocking that its original version is no longer in existence while its reception ruined the career of director Tod Browning. And there will be a first ever screening of Remembrance, which stars Gary Oldman, Timothy Spall and John Altman and explores Plymouth’s notorious Union Street in the early 1980s. The theme of revolution has been chosen to coincide with the centenary of the Russian Revolution, and the films will be shown in the Jill Craigie Cinema at the University of Plymouth starting on October 16. Dr Sarah Chapman, director of Peninsula Arts, said: “Political revolutions often herald revolutions within art, music, theatre and film and that is what we have tried to reflect in our autumn programme. “It identifies a number of points across history and within the present where culture has undergone a major shift, whether through the quashing and overturning of preexisting ideas or the result of a major development.” The full bill of films at Peninsula Arts comprises: Oct 16: I Am Not Your Negro (2016), starring Samuel L. DIY Divorce

With purse strings being squeezed and cuts in Legal Aid, there has been a marked increase in the number Vikki Martin, Head of people the Family Department of tempted to look for a less expensive way to divorce. You may have come across advertisements offering online divorce services at prices ranging from as little as £50 for a socalled “quickie divorce”. This may sound like a bargain, but before you proceed with this route, let’s investigate further to see what it entails, says Vikki Martin, Head of the Family Department, at Wolferstans. With an online service you complete a

questionnaire and this information will be used to prepare the forms which will then be emailed to you. You will have to file them with the court and you will be responsible for progressing the case from beginning to end. What happens though if the forms are incorrect? Divorce proceedings which would historically have been issued in the Court most local to you are now processed centrally in Southampton. It is no longer as simple as delivering the paperwork to your local Court and asking someone behind the counter to process it for you. If the paperwork submitted to Southampton is inaccurate or incomplete it will simply be returned to you unprocessed, or worse, it will be processed but later rejected by the Judge and you will be asked to pay an amendment fee. Going through a divorce means making decisions on how property, savings, pensions

and other assets will be sorted out as well as what arrangements will need to be made for children. Online services normally don’t cover this and it is important to apply caution. With a local specialist family law solicitor, you can be certain that they know the court procedure, will complete the forms for you and will process all paperwork from start to finish. In addition to guiding you through your divorce, you will also receive clear legal advice on the other aspects of your divorce relating to finances and children. This will help you to make decisions to achieve the best outcome for you and your family. There is no question that seeing a solicitor will be more expensive than £50 but seeking advice from a specialist family law solicitor is likely to be more cost effective and less stressful. At Wolferstans, we pride ourselves on having a team of family law specialists, offering you an honest appraisal of your circumstances on a value for money basis and with peace of mind. TRAVEL MATTERS

Why Greece is proving so popular and i for holidaymakers on e-cigarettes and Over the past few years the price of holidays has undoubtedly increased due to a number of widely reported reasons such as fuels costs, exchange rate fluctuations and local taxes. However, I feel that another fundamental reason for certain types of holiday becoming more expensive is a reduction in the amount of choices available, which can be mainly attributed to ‘Foreign Office Advice’, particularly in relation to travelling to Tunisia and Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. Both of these destinations, understandably, have not been available to book for a significant By Travel period of time now due to several horrific terrorist related incidents involving foreign tourists. Prior to this, they both hosted a substantial number of British holidaymakers and their effective ‘closure’ to Brits left a huge void in available capacity. Alternative destinations such as mainland Spain, the Canary Islands, the Balearic Islands, Portugal and Croatia have been the notable beneficiaries of this unfortunate situation. Although still considered safe according to Foreign Office advice, Turkey has also experienced a number of terrorist related incidents in recent years and the associated negative publicity has resulted in an inevitable and significant reduction in visitors. However, Turkey is beginning to recover, partly due to having had a reasonable period without incident and partly due to the capacity squeeze in the Western Mediterranean leaving very few holidays available elsewhere. So why has the exclusion of Tunisia and some parts of Egypt from our list of destinations affected holiday prices so much? Both Egypt and Tunisia have historically been two of the market leaders offering year-round guaranteed sunshine for those wishing to travel on a short-medium haul holiday. They were also two of the principal destinations offering very competitively price all-inclusive package holidays. Tunisia, only a three-hour flight away, was typically cheaper than Egypt but both offered fantastic value for money for those seeking an all-inclusive deal in a good standard of accommodation. Both places were popular holiday spots for families in particular who took advantage of the extensive facilities offered by their large hotels and were able to see their final holiday price without having to budget for unexpected extra costs. Removing these two destinations from the map effectively left thousands of families (who may have also been somewhat

deterred from visiting Turkey) scrambling for the best priced all-inclusive holidays elsewhere. Spain, including its Balearic and Canary Islands, only have a limited number of properties offering accommodation on an all-inclusive basis so many hotels and apartments were able to charge a premium rate for their rooms in addition to introducing new local tourist taxes. This resulted in a remarkable situation where in some instances it was cheaper for a family of four to go to Mexico, the Dominican Republic or Cuba on an all-inclusive basis than it was to stay at an Expert equivalently rated hotel in Majorca for 14 nights! We have also witnessed a change in the booking patterns and habits of couples – again, as a result of the situation in Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey. In the past, many couples initially requested the prices of all-inclusive holidays with value for money being the priority in their holiday search, but they now seem just as happy to look at half-board, bed and breakfast or even selfcatering options. This is not only due to the reduction in the amount of allinclusive holidays on offer but because holidays for a lower board basis seem more realistically priced and do not leave the client ‘feeling compelled’ to stay in the resort for the entire holiday duration as they have effectively pre-paid for their food and drinks. Greece has been the main beneficiary of this particular change in booking pattern as many couples return to the Greek Islands to remember and repeat past holidays where eating out at different tavernas each evening and experiencing the local culture were holiday highlights. Despite the value of the pound falling considerably against the Euro this summer, many of our clients have returned and, surprisingly, expressed what good value for money Greece has represented this year. This can only lead us to conclude that perhaps all inclusive isn’t always the best choice after all! Although Foreign Office advice against travel to Sharm El Sheikh by air remains in place, we do expect this to be reviewed very soon and the FCO have now lifted their ban on travel to Tunisia, which has immediately lead to tour operators re-introducing package holidays from February 2018. This is obviously not only good news for these countries and their economies but also for travel agents and, more importantly, holidaymakers who will once again benefit from a wider choice of holidays and more competitive prices. Having never been a smoker, the thought of having to

important advice d passport photos endure a long journey without a cigarette has never crossed my mind. As virtually all worldwide airlines and the majority of hotels have enforced a smoking ban and the places available to smoke in airports have increasingly limited, many people have altered their smoking habits and switched to e-cigarettes. The trend seems to be continuing towards a totally smokefree environment in public areas, particularly in many of the popular holiday spots favoured by Brits and e-cigarettes seem a more socially acceptable option of those who simply do not wish to quit. It may surprise you to know however that e-cigarettes are actually prohibited in certain destinations popular with British holidaymakers. In Thailand for example, if you are caught in possession of an e-cigarette either on entry or whilst in the country, it will be confiscated and you could face being fined or even imprisoned for up to 10 years! This is due to the potential negative impact that e-cigarettes could have on the tobacco economy and the significant vested interest that the Thai government holds in successful tobacco companies. The laws regarding e-cigarettes are strictly enforced and must be taken very seriously. If you are a smoker therefore, I would suggest checking the rules and regulations for the country you are travelling to (particularly in Asia) very carefully when booking your holiday to avoid any issues on arrival or during your holiday. Finally, I would like to briefly mention the importance of having your photo taken correctly for your passports and visas. There are very strict guidelines set out by each country regarding acceptable photos and it is critical that they are adhered to. A client of ours recently had to take and submit her photo several times for her visa to visit China. Between booking her holiday and processing her visa, the stipulations regarding the photo had changed with much stricter guidelines stating the following: • It should show your full face (without smiling) and your face should be in the centre of the frame • Your hair should be tucked behind your ears • No sunglasses, no glasses, no jewellery hats or scarves • Photo must be different from what is in the passport To save time and money, I would suggest checking the relevant website for the most up-to-date requirements regarding your passport photo - they could be stricter than you think! Happy Holidays! www.cornerstonevision.com

Personal service guaranteed, as Jack leads family firm of funeral directors into fourth generation At just 23, Jack Weekes didn’t have to think twice when he was given the opportunity this summer to take over as head of his family’s independent firm, J Weekes Funeral Directors. Jack is the fourth generation of the Millbrook firm, which was set up by his great granddad, Harry Weekes, in 1934. When Jack’s granddad, John, finally called it a day after a remarkable 59 years of service, Jack decided it was time to step up. “Grandad took over the business at quite a young age when his father died and he wanted to be able to pass it on,” said Jack. “I’d been working as a joiner for three years and went self-employed after my apprenticeship so I would always come and help granddad when he needed a hand. “He hoped I’d go into it eventually and I always wanted to do it once he retired. But he hasn’t left completely. He didn’t take a holiday in 27 years and he still comes in to help even

now! He only lives two doors up the road and it’s nice to be able to draw on his experience and advice.” Jack will be putting his carpentry skills to work by offering the option of hand-crafted coffins: “It always used to be the case that the local funeral director would be the local carpenter because he would make the coffins. That’s how our family firm started. But then manufactured coffins came along. We’re still offering manufactured coffins, obviously, but I think the option of a hand-made solid oak or mahogany coffin is a unique addition. I don’t know of anyone else that’s doing it.” It’s one of the traditional services Jack is keen to reintroduce. Another in 2018 will be the offer of a horsedrawn hearse, with his partner, Charlotte Pine, at the reins with her four-year-old Fell cross horse, Missy. The hearse is being hand made by Fenix Carriages, whose customers include the Royal Family. “We have three churches within a one-mile radius and I think the horse-drawn hearse will be very popular,” said Jack. “But it will be available, wherever the service is held.” Jack, his brother Tom and dad Shaun all helped out when the new family funeral home in St John’s Road was built three years ago. With living accommodation upstairs at the premises, care and attention is assured 24/7, and Jack is available on call at all times. Although J Weekes is best known in South East Cornwall including Torpoint, Saltash and the Rame Peninsula, Jack offers a wider service which takes in the Plymouth area. And he said: “Bigger firms can’t offer the same sort of personal service. The only person people will see is me so they don’t have to deal with lots of different people, I’m there to support them every step of the way. People often comment on the attentive, compassionate service. They like to have a more family-orientated experience during this testing period in their lives.” Jack added: “It’s very rewarding, actually, being on the whole journey with people who are rock bottom when you first see them but who are comforted through the journey to the point where they come in afterwards to say ‘thank you’. It’s knowing how to talk to people and it’s supporting people through a very difficult time.” Jack will arrange every aspect of the funeral service, removing as much of the strain as possible to allow families to focus on remembering and celebrating their loved ones. He will always visit people in the comfort of their own homes, unless they prefer to come into the office for personal reasons. “I will take care of everything and they can rest assured that everything will be arranged as they wish,” said Jack. There is a set price list for a range of funerals, from £2,200 to £3,118, which includes the church or crematorium fees. Bespoke arrangements can also be made to suit families’ requirements. “And we can offer rates that are much more competitive than most large firms,” said Jack. The company supports other businesses by working with independent florists and printers in the area: “We’re a well-known local family and we play an active part in

the community, part of that is working with other local businesses. We also raise money for charities and we sponsor matches and match day programmes at Plymouth Argyle.” For peace of mind, J Weekes – a member of the National Association of Funeral Directors – also offers pre-paid funeral plans. Contact Jack to discuss a plan suited to your needs. As for the family business, it seems it’s in good hands for the foreseeable future. Jack said: “I love what I do and I’d like

new, valeted self-drive vehicles for all customers and generous mileage restrictions. Opening hours are 7am to 8pm and each rental is based on a 24-hour period, starting at the time of pick up. Rupert explained: “Standard 9-5 hours are very restrictive especially for people who need to get started early. And the pressure to get the vehicle back before 5pm or face additional cost is equally restrictive. “With our hours, not only do we start earlier and finish later, but people can hire the vehicle for the period that suits them, so it might be 1pm to 1pm, for example. Our service is geared to our customers’ needs. We want to ensure they have a positive experience.” The rental vans – which are available to self-employed delivery drivers as well as the general public – include Citroën Berlingo for small jobs; Ford Transit for medium loads; the larger Mercedes Sprinter; and Luton vans which are ideal for house moves. Daily rental starts from £49, weekend rental is £69 and weekly rental is £169, all prices including VAT and insurance. Weekend rental for a modern Luton van with tail lift and low loader is currently on offer at £99 including VAT and insurance: “And that’s from 6pm on Friday to 8am on

BUSINESS MATTERS Monday,” said Rupert. “It’s an absolute steal. I’ve not seen a better price than that anywhere. “When you consider that daily rental of a Luton van is £90, you’re effectively getting one-and-a-half days for £9. That’s saving people a lot of money.” The insurance covers anyone over 25 with a driving licence, including courier use. Drivers under 25 are covered by their own insurance. Blankets, straps, trolleys and sat navs are available to hire as optional extras. The prices are available with generous mileage limits – up to 200 miles for daily rental, up to 300 for weekends and up to 500 miles for weekly rental of a Transit van: “Any mileage is possible but we’d have to adjust the price,” said Rupert. DCL will supply a driver if required or offer customers the option of using the taxi van service, where the company will collect and deliver an item within the Plymouth and surrounding area for a flat rate of £25, where loading or unloading can be done within five minutes: “If people don’t want to drive the van themselves and the loading will take more than five minutes, then we can also offer a courier service,” said Rupert. “I think we’re ticking all boxes really in terms of what we can offer and our flexibility to ensure the best possible service for our customers,” he added. That flexibility extends to hiring vans for overseas journeys, as long as prior notification is given for insurance purposes. “My message to anyone needing to hire a van is ‘come and talk to us and I’m sure we can beat anything on offer elsewhere’. We’re a local, friendly firm, not a national chain, so we are able to do that.” Rupert set up DCL Vehicle Hire in December 2016 and it’s part of his group of businesses that also includes Devon Couriers. He has over 50 vehicles and the fleet is growing all the time: “In the run-up to Christmas we could double that number and still have all the vans out because of all the

Eco-homes development proves popular with Plymouth house hunters

It was green for go as eager house hunters reserved a further five properties at a new eco-homes development in Plymouth. Scores of prospective buyers attended the recent open day event at the eagerly anticipated Roborough Eco-Home development at Bickleigh, where Mansbridge Balment Plymouth are acting as sole marketing agents. A number of the 91 properties at the new development were reserved before building work even started at the site and Kevin Buckingham, director at Mansbridge Balment’s Plymouth North office, was delighted a further five properties were reserved at the event.

“The open day event was a great success and those who attended were clearly impressed by the green credentials of the new homes, which really do set a new standard in ecoliving,” said Kevin. “These are very special homes that really do lead the way in carbon friendly, energy saving technology and more and more buyers are seeing the importance of green living and the part properties like these will play in being kinder to our planet.” Built by ZeroC, a sustainable property development specialist, the two, three, four and five bedroom homes combine contemporary styling with the latest energy efficiency technology. The homes have the highest predicted energy rating in terms of both their energy efficiency and impact on the environment. Key features include triple glazed windows and independent heat zones, with solar panels also available. All the properties also come with a 10 year builder’s guarantee. Three and four bedroom homes starting at £250,000 are to be released in the first phase, backed by the Government’s Help to Buy scheme. “Alongside its green credentials this development is in the ideal location too for quick access to the moors, as well as being convenient for Plymouth City Centre,” added Kevin.

Bumper August

School was out but the customers were definitely in as Mansbridge Balment Plymouth celebrated a bumper month in August – a time when the property market normally takes its annual holiday. Traditionally, buyers and sellers alike put their property plans on hold during the school holiday period, using their hard earned cash for a well-deserved trip abroad. But both the agency’s Plymouth City and Plymouth North branches have just recorded one of their busiest August sale periods ever. New instructions have tripled, compared with the same time last year, a clear indication that the Plymouth marketplace remains very buoyant indeed. Darren Lawson, managing director of Mansbridge Balment Plymouth, said the figures were a very welcome, if highly unusual, boost to the business. “Just when we thought the market would take a traditional summer break, both our offices have been busier than ever,” said Darren. “We have had a tremendous level of new instructions from sellers keen to capitalise on what remains a very active market here in Plymouth and it has really set the tone for what is normally a busy period from September through to Christmas.”

PROPERTY MATTERS

Darren believes much of the sales activity is being driven by the increasing numbers of first time buyers who have been much in evidence since the beginning of the year. He said more and more first time buyers are taking advantage of current favourable lending conditions and low interest rates, coupled with schemes like Help to Buy – as well as the ‘Bank of Mum and Dad.’ “With demand high for properties across all price ranges, I think sellers are seizing the opportunity to tap into the current spending power of the first time buyers, particularly as none of us are quite sure what impact Brexit will ultimately have on the market and prices. “If you have a property to sell, currently you really are in the driving seat as we are seeing first time buyers with a lot of financial clout. We have had purchases of up to £300,000 by first time buyers who see now as the best possible chance to get on the housing ladder. “There is little doubt that parents are playing a key role in this and lenders have seized on that trend too, offering attractive mortgage products designed to help them support their children in their first home purchase.”

Plymouth-based polar explorer Antony Jinman set up the project with the aim of establishing links between the adult workforce and school children. Pupils can see how what they learn in the classroom can be readily put into practice in the real world. The money raised will help to finance the equipment and expertise required to bring some of the world’s leading experts into schools - via the internet. Antony has already introduced polar scientists to students who learnt about the climate from teams who were operating in the hostile sub-zero environment at the time. Showing the practical applications of classroom theory in science, technology and the arts is the key goal of ‘LiketoBe’ which cements crucial parts of the national curriculum into the creative imaginations of school children across the UK. Stakes in the ‘LiketoBe’ portfolio have been successfully selling at £7.53 per share via the seedrs.com platform (with a minimum purchase price of £15.06). The team envisages that its goals and vision will be embraced not just by local schools but also by teachers from around the country. By increasing the amount of investment into the project then it means the range of experts available to talk to children will also rise (as technology will allow more schools to engage and so liaise directly with the top thinkers and doers in their chosen areas). “The sky is no longer the limit when it comes down to the potential application of what we can now achieve,” said Antony. “We can use additional funds to broaden our technological reach so pupils can engage with people in far flung countries on the edge of the stratosphere. In doing so, ‘LiketoBe’ will continue to bring classroom learning to life.”

LiketoBe founder Plymouth polar explorer Antony Jinman

‘LiketoBe’ is an educational technology company based at Plymouth Science Park. The 25 acre site has a large number of outstanding science based companies and technological experts which already assist with ‘LiketoBe.’ “It’s a cost-effective way to raise aspirations to learn more about career opportunities and for students to learn more about the career opportunities out there,” says Antony. The money raised will be invested into developing on-line services for the business - which should also see investors benefitting from 30% tax relief from their input. Antony expects a return of up to ten times the amount of the original investment (over the next four to five years). Financial input also allows for the team to expand further and strengthen links with industries working in the areas of: science, engineering, technology, arts and maths. “It means classrooms can hear from the best of the best who may be hundreds of miles away from the school and who are unable to travel to the classroom but can still provide pupils with a presentation - and answer crucial questions relating to their specialism,” he added. The team has already developed strong links with its founding partner, Network Rail, which has been involved with the project for the past two years. Antony has already successfully managed the Education through Expeditions scheme, set up in 2009, which encourages primary children to engage with workshops which teach youngsters about expedition planning and training. The project includes the chance for a number of school children to visit Lapland each year where they gain an understanding of how the Sami co-exist with reindeer and are given the opportunity to stay in a forest cabin to learn how to live in the wilderness.

TRAINING MATTERS

Hayley and Chloe celebrate their success in Festival of Learning Awards Two Plymouth women are celebrating after winning regional awards in the 2017 Festival of Learning Awards previously known as Adult Learners’ Week. Hayley Levy from Widewell won the Social Impact Award for being a proactive ambassador for learning with a positive impact on local communities, including disadvantaged and excluded groups. Chloe Causer, who lives in the city centre, won the Learning for Work award for her determination to improve her employment prospects through further education and lifelong learning. Hayley, 38, always wanted to be a nurse, but family circumstances put this dream on hold. However, out of a sad and distressing situation, came hope and opportunity. Spending time in hospital with her sick son motivated Hayley to enrol on an Access to Higher Education course in Nursing at City College Plymouth. While on the course, Hayley wanted to apply some of her new knowledge to her current job as a care home activities co-ordinator at Parkwood House nursing and residential home. Having learned that knitting had a positive impact on

patients’ wellbeing, she launched a ‘Knit and Natter’ group where residents learn to knit squares for blankets which are then donated to the neonatal unit in Derriford Hospital. Under Hayley’s attention, residents were re-engaging with others and responding more positively to their care. Hayley’s

project has been so successful that there are plans for similar initiatives in other facilities. Hayley is now on her way to starting a nursing degree at Plymouth University. Hayley said: “Going back to full-time education has shown my children that it doesn’t matter what your age is, if you

want something and you work hard enough you can achieve anything.” Unemployed for a year after being made redundant, Chloe, 24, was struggling financially and her situation affected her confidence and self-esteem. With advice and encouragement, Chloe signed up to the Prince’s Trust ‘Get into Admin’ initiative at City College Plymouth. During the course, she seized the opportunity to get work experience at Plymouth City Council and was soon offered a business administration apprenticeship with the Council. Chloe’s confidence began to grow and it became clear she had a natural talent for helping others. Her life was transformed once she joined the Prince’s Trust. Now a Plymouth Apprenticeship Ambassador and a Prince’s Trust Young Ambassador, Chloe regularly represents the Trust as a speaker at local and national conferences. Chloe discussed how engaging with learning has affected her life: “I am proud of my achievements and how much I have grown. This apprenticeship completely changed my outlook on life and my future.” Chloe’s nominator, Sharon Hopkins, business support administrator at City College Plymouth, added: “Chloe is an excellent role model for young people. She has demonstrated that with focus and determination she is able to achieve her ambitions.” Stephen Evans, chief executive at Learning and Work Institute, said: “Lifelong learning is crucial for all of us as jobs and society changes around us, and as the working population gets older. Festival of Learning is all about people being inspired by stories like Hayley’s and Chloe’s. “We encourage everyone to get involved in learning and access information on learning opportunities and support with the costs of learning that might be available, such as through Advanced Learner Loans or from the National Careers Service, as well as talking to their local colleges and providers about what’s on offer”.

GARDENING MATTERS By Derek Anderson of Plymouth Garden Centre As October is drawing in and winter is getting nearer, most things in the garden are winding down for winter and are past their best, but there are a few plants that not only look great now, but have looked great for most of the year too, and will continue looking good through out winter too. Dianthus Pink Kisses are a relatively new introduction and have only been around for the past three years, but their popularity is booming and rightly so. They are a fantastic little plant, producing hundreds of lovely clove scented flowers every year. The blooming power on these petite little plants is incredible: they just flower profusely and repeatedly, covering the entire plant. They are naturally compact and are an incredibly dynamic plant for a whole host of situations in the garden, pots and planters, beds and borders or perhaps as a feature plant in a rockery. The flowers are richly coloured and age to a soft pink blush around the edges of every petal, creating a unique bi-colour effect. A great value little plant, Dianthus Pink Kisses will thrive in a bright sunny spot position, and with a deadheading the faded blooms, it will perpetually throw up more and more blooms from spring until the frosts. It prefers a sunny spot with well drained soil. It performs better if its not sitting in damp soil. It grows to a height and spread of 20cm (8ins). Festuca glauca Intense Blue is a striking grass and is outstanding at providing the best steely blue foliage of all the shorter grasses. This is an undemanding grass that provides an ornamental look and is fantastic when drifted through a gravel garden, or when used in a Mediterranean-style planting scheme. It also works well in patio pots, where it will form a spiky topknot. It is mainly grown for it fine foliage, which has the best colour when it is planted in a spot that gets sun for the entire day, but it also produces bluish green flower spikes in summer that age to straw. It is a great companion plant for upright late flowering herbaceous perennials such as Rudbeckia, Echinacea, Anemones, Crocosmia and Verbena bonariensis. It preforms at it’s best when planted in full sun in well drained soil and grows to height and spread of 30cm (12ins). Hebe Addenda is a hard-working shrub that is ideal for small gardens and container displays. Many shrubs are just too big for small modern gardens, and many don’t offer enough interest to make them a worthwhile addition. Hebe addenda can alleviate those problems. It is an evergreen, compact, bushy shrub that grows to just 60cm (2ft) in height and spread. The broad, spear-shaped leaves look great all year round and are smothered in vibrant, fluffy blooms, in a mix of pink, white and purple from mid summer until the frosts. There is also a variegated variety that has green leaves

that are edged with bright gold, helping to add interest and colour to the garden year round. They prefer a sunny spot, but will grow in part shade in a fertile but well drained soil. Dead-head regularly to keep it looking fresh and to promote fresh blooms. It is a magnet for bees and butterflies and is great for providing late season nectar. A shrub that has intense colourful foliage with an elegant form is Coprosma. It is a beautiful and classy plant that is suitable to use in pots and well as a splash of colour in borders. There are several varieties available with different coloured leaves, so there is one to suit every style. The best colour varieties are the cocktail collection, Pina Colada has distinctive glossy leaves that are slightly crinkled with a distinct yellow-gold colour with deep red-orange edges and with enhanced orange to red coloration in the cooler weather of winter. Midnight Martini has a deep purple-brown glossy leaf that is tinged with flecks of green and orange. The purple colouration intensifies in winter. Lemon and Lime is probably the most subdued of the coprosmas, with glossy lime coloured leaves that is heavily splashed with streaks of yellow, the leaves also take on orange-red tips in winter. Finally Tequila Sunrise is probably the most colourful of the coprosmas. This plant features a vibrant variety of foliage colours ranging from lime green to yellow during spring to sunset

PRIDE & JOY orange which deepens to volcanic burgundy during winter. Coprosmas are great plants to use in coastal areas, as the thick, glossy leaves are extremely tolerant of salt laden winds. They like an area in full sun with a free draining soil to perform at their best. They can also be slightly tender as they are hardy down to -5C, but any lower than that and they will need to be protected. Coprosmas will grow to a height of approximately 1.5m (5ft) with a spread of 1m (3ft3ins). Azaleas are a beautiful and extremely popular slow growing shrub with green glossy evergreen leaves and flowers that burst into bloom, producing a mass of colour from late winter until early summer. There are a vast range of colours available from pure white through to oranges, pinks, purples and reds. Azaleas are related to Rhododendrons and are one of the most colourful of the spring flowering shrubs in the UK. The flowers are star shaped funnels and are produced in clusters at the end of the stems. When in bloom, the entire plant will be covered in flowers and will produce an abundance of colour. Azaleas are easy to grow, and will tolerate full sun to full shade, provided you give them fertile, acidic compost and keep them well watered. If you don’t have acidic soil in your garden, you can grow them happily in pots in ericaceous compost and feed them regularly with ericaceous feed. Depending on the variety, Azaleas tend to be reasonably compact growing, growing to a height and spread of 1-1.5m (3-5ft). They are so easy to grow and will reward you with a mass of colour in spring. www.cornerstonevision.com
