The award will be presented at this year’s Radiographer of the Year ceremony, to be held in the House of Commons in November. The team were nominated in recognition of how well they worked together during the scanner conversion project. During the conversion project, the team were reduced to having one scanner inside Derriford Hospital and were reliant on using mobile scanners during the wettest winter on record. Christine Heales, lead MRI radiographer at Derriford Hospital said: “At times, the

demand on that scanner was incredibly high. “During the replacement process, the pressure on the team was exceptional, but they all, without fail, worked together to minimise the disruption to the patients. “Throughout that time they kept a professional, caring and cheerful attitude.” The Radiography Team of the Year annual awards are organised by the Society of Radiographers and are an opportunity to recognise the hard work and dedication of radiography teams across the country. Members of the team will attend the award ceremony on November 11. Derriford Hospital now has three scanners inside the hospital and one on a mobile unit.

£4.2m investment in home insulation announced

British Gas, Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Energy Community have joined forces to provide solid wall insulation to homes across Plymouth A new energy makeover to offer private home owners in Plymouth solid wall insulation, via a £4.2million investment has been announced. The new private scheme is part funded by British Gas’ Energy Companies Obligation and the Government’s Green Deal Community Fund awarded to the city council. This follows the ongoing 4,000 property social housing insulation project already being delivered by British Gas and Plymouth Community Homes in the city. The project will target several neighbourhoods in the city beginning at Whitleigh, where the energy company is targeting entire neighbourhoods for insulation makeovers. The work will be

rolled out in other areas of Plymouth including St Judes, St Budeaux, Plympton, Southway, Woodford and Keyham.

The average solid wall three-bed house in the area can now receive up to £5400 off the cost of solid wall insulation, which can help residents benefit from energy bill savings of up to £270 per year. At present, Plymouth is the only place in the UK to receive this huge discount on solid wall insulation from British Gas. The energy giant is urging private home owners in Plymouth to get

South Yard plan for 1,000 jobs People in Plymouth and beyond are being asked to give their comments towards shaping the anchor project for the City Deal, which could create over 1,000 new and skilled jobs. Outline plans to transform parts of the South Yard in Devonport into a marine industries production campus are being developed, ahead of an application being submitted to planners. A masterplan, which shows possible future uses and layouts of the site, has

been compiled by consultants acting on behalf of the South Yard Project Board chaired by Plymouth City Council.

Now they want to know if their plans to turn the historic dockyard into a thriving centre for marine-related industry is on the right lines. An outline planning application is being prepared for submission in late November, but the project team is seeking comments from the public on ideas for the South Yard. This will involve developing nearly eight hectares of land across two areas, known as Area 1 and Area 5. Existing listed buildings,

“As well as the obvious benefit of making the house much more energy efficient, the work has already improved the look of my home dramatically, and is going to add to its value – so it’s been well worth getting the work done on every level.” Throughout Plymouth, British Gas has already committed to investing over £50m to improve the look, warmth and energy efficiency of both private properties as well as social housing. the museum and fire station, would be refurbished for future use as well as the historic docks. Option One: Development of a Marine Industries Production Campus – a purely commercial development, designed for industrial and maritime use only, with associated office space across the site Option Two: Development of a Marine Industries Production Campus with a mixed use slant – this broadens the commercial options and includes a small element of housing next to Albany Street/Granby Way instead of some of commercial development. Council leader Tudor Evans said: “This is the flagship proposal of the City Deal and is a once-in-a-life-time opportunity to create the right conditions, the right environment for our thriving marine industry in the heart of Plymouth. “It is critical that the people who live in this area, who have a vested interest in what goes on along this incredible waterfront, help us make the right decision so that the city can continue to build its maritime credentials and create skilled, sustainable employment.”

He said: “The back of my house was in need of some work, but the cost was prohibitive and putting me off getting the job done. But I found out about the external wall insulation offer from British Gas and realised that, with the help of the grants on offer, I could have the entire house cladded for a third of the cost I had been quoted for just one wall.

Research by British Gas has uncovered that 60 per cent of Plymouth people believe their home doesn’t qualify for free insulation, despite it being available to every home that needs it.

Michael Blakeborough, 74, has lived at his privately-owned home in Whitleigh since 1978. He was considering Councillor Chris Penberthy with resident Michael Blakeborough, Steve Gapik (British options regarding the re-rendering Gas), and Paul Elliott (Plymouth Energy of his property’s Community).

Since the signing of the Plymouth and South West Peninsula City Deal, the Council and the Heart of the South West Local Enterprise have been involved in detailed discussions with the Ministry of Defence over potentially releasing some areas of land at South Yard. The yard is one of the few sites that may be able to provide deep water access in the South West and could provide the marine sector with facilities to develop technology, manufacture and commercialise products and services. It could also be home to small and mediumsize businesses that support marine businesses. Public consultation events took place at Devonport’s Welcome Hall in October when local residents were able to view the proposals and complete questionnaires. People can also fill in an online survey or submit comments on the City Deal website at www.plymouth.gov.uk/ southyard If all goes according to plan, land will be formally transferred from the MOD to the Council next March with redevelopment work on the site getting underway from April 2015 onwards and for several years after to provide new infrastructure, services and development opportunities.

Helping carers know their rights and get support Every year, more than 2 million people in The UK become carers. It is estimated that up to 29,000 of these support someone in Plymouth. Many struggle to navigate the maze of services and entitlements, and miss out on financial and practical support. And it’s not just people who are new to caring – even those who have been caring for years sometimes aren’t aware of their entitlements. Caring can present all kinds of challenges. We want every carer to know where to turn for advice, information and support, whether in their local community or online. Carers Rights Day raises awareness of the needs of carers with the public, decision makers and professionals, helping us realise

our vision of a society that respects, values and supports carers. In Plymouth this year carers and professionals who support carers are invited to attend a free lunch and find out more about their rights and the services available to them at a special Carers Rights Day event on Friday 28th November at Plymouth Guild Hall from 9.30am to 2.30pm. This has been organised by Carers Hub Plymouth, Plymouth Carers Forum, Plymouth City Council, New Devon Clinical Commissioning Group and Healthwatch Plymouth. The event will be opened by Councillor Ian Tuffin (Cabinet

Member for Health and Adult Social Care) and Kate Jones will be speaking about the Care Act 2014 and how the Act strengthens the rights and recognition of carers in the social care system. This will be followed by workshops on carer’s assessment, benefits entitlements, advocacy and carer’s health and wellbeing checks. There will also be Information stands and a carer’s art exhibition to browse throughout the day. If you would like further information or would like to book a place and enjoy a free lunch please contact the Carers Hub at Plymouth Guild on 01752 201890 or email chp@plymouthguild.org.uk or message us at www.facebook.com/carers.hubplymouth Further information for carers is available at www.plymouthguild.org.uk/ carers-hub/

Plymouth in the Great War is Chris Robinson’s latest work November sees the 100th Anniversary of the Amalgamation of the Three Towns Plymouth, Devonport and Stonehouse.

It was a pivotal moment in the history of the area and the successful passage of the Bill through Parliament on November 1 1914 marks the virtual birth of the modern City of Plymouth (City status was conferred in 1928). Local historian Chris Robinson’s fifth book looking at the City in the Twentieth Century ‘Plymouth’s Great War: The Three Towns United in Conflict’ is therefore a very timely release. Coinciding with and expanding upon the exhibition that has been running in the City Museum and Art Gallery throughout this anniversary year, the book examines the position of the Three

Chris Robinson with his latest publication Plymouth’s Great War

Towns immediately prior to the Amalgamation and takes an in depth look at the role that the area subsequently played in what, at the time, was dubbed the War to End All Wars. Plymouth was perhaps unique during the Great War in having a base for all four of the Armed Services – the Royal Navy, the Royal Marines, Army and Royal Naval Air Service (later RAF). It is a period of Plymouth’s history

that has hitherto been paid scant attention by historians and comes as a very welcome addition to our understanding and appreciation of the City. Packed with over 500 images, many of them in colour and many never previously published, it is a wonderful visual record of the life and times of the people who lived here 100 years ago. As such it is an absolute must for anyone interested in local history and more specifically their own family history, if their

parents, grandparents or great-grandparents lived through that momentous period of change. Plymouth’s Great War: The Three Towns United in Conflict is published by Pen & Ink Publishing Price £16.95. It will be available from a variety of outlets in the City including; Waterstones, WH Smiths, University Bookseller, as well as Chris Robinson’s shop at 34 New Street, Barbican and the Christmas Market, in Armada Way.

Young carers are children who have caring responsibilities for their parents or brothers and sisters – perhaps because their parents have long-term medical problems, or have been through severe trauma. Often, young carers have to manage household budgets and bills, take on shopping and cleaning chores, provide physical or emotional support or medical aid for their parents and siblings, and keep their families safe. Effervescent, which recently converted the abandoned Halifax Bank on Derrys Cross into an art gallery, tea room, studio and creative hub, has been working with the group of girls and Barnardos since August. Sasha Richardson, 13, said: “We practiced curating teddy bears and shoes - before we started working with art works - in the studio, corridors, and toilets at Radiant: it was really weird but lots of fun! We also went to two museums in London. We got inspiration from there: it was really useful.” Toddlers Group 9.30am every Tuesday at St Michael’s Church in Albert Road, Stoke and 9.15am every Wednesday at St Barnabas Church in St Barnabas Terrace. The project has been supported by Arts Council England, Plymouth University and Plymouth City Council. Ray White, Effervescent’s curator, said: “It’s been a genuine privilege to work with such talented girls. What we’re doing at Radiant is finding new ways to ensure culture and arts are enjoyed and owned by everyone in Plymouth. “We want to see what young children curate, and what they think is important to talk about through art. What we’ve found out, is that even very young people can put together sophisticated and exciting shows, given help and space.” Describing the show, young curator Crystal Lynes, 10, said: “One moment you’re scared, next minute you’re laughing, and then you’re sad.” Chyanne Parker, 14, added: “I’m Beautiful Now is dark; I hope it gives you a feeling of fear. As a young carer you have a lot of emotions, and one of the big ones is fear.” Barnardo’s children’s services manager Jeanie Lynch said: “It has been a great experience to work with Effervescent, which is such a creative organisation. “Young carers often face enormous challenges but they shouldn’t have to do this on their own. Enterprising Plymouth! Plymouth is cementing its status as a social enterprise city through a £500,000 innovative investment fund that will create jobs. Plymouth City Council is believed to be the first in the country to have a Social Enterprise investment fund and it has recently awarded £300,000 to six social enterprises.

City provides big boost for jobs with £500,000 investment fund

The funds have the potential to lead to 30 new jobs across a number of organisations. Bikespace, a community interest company, is a notfor-profit vocational training centre based in Devonport which plans to use its fund to open a shop to sell refurbished and electric bikes. The organisation already employs those who have had a rough start in life, teaching them how to fix and recondition bikes.

• A dementia hub – Memory Matters South West Community Interest Company want to turn an empty shop into an advice and activity centre. As well as clubs and training, there will also be a nostalgia café and treatment/therapy rooms for visiting therapists. The project will create jobs, apprenticeships, work placements and could help increase diagnosis rates, improve quality of life for families, carers and those living with dementia. They will receive £9,995.

• Radiant – A former empty shop, converted into an exhibition space has opened as a tearoom, Rumpuscosy. Funding will enable the venue to have more staff, more food production and an improved venue. It aims to create further job opportunities and involve vulnerable children and young people. They will receive £19,000.

Spokesman Gareth Thomas said: “It’s brilliant news and we will be able to carry on expanding. We already run a fleet of electric bikes and think that is a growing area. We want to expand our sales and servicing, providing jobs for people from disadvantaged backgrounds.”

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “These organisations exist to put something into our community and help Plymouth residents who need that little bit of extra support. As one of the country’s first social enterprise

Other schemes include:

• Four Greens Community Trust want to convert an empty care home in Whitleigh into a HQ hub and incubator businesses. They received £90,000.

Bikespace wants to go into parcel delivery using ‘Cargo bikes’ which have big boxes on the front of the bike and the organisation has been given £100,000 through a mixture of business support, capital and a loan to get their idea off the ground.

The Social Enterprise Investment Fund comes from the council’s ‘Building for Jobs’ Investment Fund – one of the council’s 19 ‘Plan for Jobs’ projects aimed at unlocking stalled developments, creating new jobs and levering additional public and private sector finance.

“This is fantastic news and if everything goes to plan, it will create 30 jobs – that will make a difference not just to the person with the job, but the wider community of Plymouth.”

• Column Bakehouse want to create a baking school that offers skills, training and vocational opportunities in a working environment. £80,000 loan will be spent on equipment and changing the layout.

Coun Chris Penberthy with two of the team from Bikespace

cities, we need to show we are backing their efforts all the way – for the good of the people who live here. These schemes are really exciting and have the potential

to change lives.” Councillor Chris Penberthy, Cabinet member for Co-operatives, Housing and Community Safety added:

• Social Enterprise City Making a Splash – a mobile app and paper guide to raise the profile of social enterprise in Plymouth, encourage people and businesses to buy social’ and support the city’s social enterprises. They will receive £8450. The funding is a combination of business support, grant funding and loans.

Family friendly event An ethical family-friendly Christmas event is being held at Hope Baptist Church in Peverell in November. The third annual ‘Just Christmas’ event is on Saturday November 29 between 10am and 4pm. Just Christmas will feature local craftspeople selling their wares, recycled and Fairtrade items for sale, charities will be represented selling their own craft items and merchandise, and as well as all of that there will be free activities for children and Fairtrade and local refreshments for sale including locally made pasties. One of the event organisers said: “The aim is to show the general public that Christmas is about more than a spending spree on the High Street and that ethics are important too. “We need to consider how our purchases affect those who made them, what they are made of and how far they have had to travel, which affects their environmental impact. And of course one hand-made item has to be so much more special than something mass-produced in a factory on the other side of the world, doesn’t it?” All the proceeds this year will go towards Chicks Christmas Breaks. Chicks take underprivileged children on breaks - ‘making memories, giving hope’. More details of their Christmas breaks can be found at www.chicks.org.uk/christmasatchicks 8

Peverell’s soprano performs for Plymouth Philharmonic Choir all aspects of music in the area, including her role as vocal adviser for Cornwall.

Most of the largescale classical choral pieces performed by Plymouth Philharmonic Choir also feature soloists, and when they are joined by soprano Catherine Hamilton it is a double delight. Catherine has performed with the Choir many times now and with each appearance builds on her success and popularity – her voice and performances just seem to get better and better. The Choir generally has the pick of the nation’s soloists to choose from but best of all is when they can feature a local talent. Catherine, who lives in Peverell, last performed with the Choir this summer for Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana. Local musical director and conductor Brian Gerry reviewed the concert and had this to say about Catherine’s contribution: “The choir was joined by three soloists: Catherine Hamilton, Leslie

The Choir’s next concert is Haydn’s The Seasons. Appearing with Catherine Hamilton on this occasion are two other favourites, tenor Richard Rowntree and bassbaritone Andrew Mahon. Accompanied by a full orchestra the concert takes place in Plymouth Guildhall on Sunday November 30 at 7pm. Catherine Hamilton

Baker and Michael Dewis. All three of them sang, performed and portrayed the music in what was truly a theatrical experience. “Mention must be made of Catherine Hamilton, who sang with her usual bright and expressive tone. How many sopranos can sing a top D as beautifully! It was also evident that the choir as a whole appreciated all three soloists and were equally captivated by them.” Since moving to Devon, Catherine has been actively involved in

Support your local businesses Mutley and Peverell - an area to return to time and again

Whilst most Plymothians will recommend Peverell and neighbouring Mutley and Greenbank as a good area to buy property, either a good investment or a great place to bring up a family, the hard working traders in the area tend to receive much less attention.

Feature by Karen Pilkington

In case you weren’t aware, we’d like to introduce some of these local tradespeople and encourage you to look hard at their adverts and see if your day wouldn’t be a little brighter by popping out to say hello and take advantage of the fantastic services they provide. Mutley is currently the second largest retail area in the city and yet it is often overlooked despite its many shops, pubs and cafes.

This has got to be classic short term thinking! Shops and businesses are what stops an area like ours just becoming an urban sprawl – row and row of houses with no neigbourhood or community feel. Real people desperately need places to walk to, and meet other real people during the day – whether you are at home entertaining young children, or looking after a poorly loved one; suffer from ill health yourself, or are one of a growing army of professional people who choose

daytime TV or browsing the web.

Sam Remmer - championing the Mutley Traders Group

to work from home; - community on your doorstep becomes a worthy alternative to

The recently reformed Traders Group, championed by the dynamic Sam Remmer of the Art of Dance, located just behind the Plain, aims to increase the number of visitors to Mutley and make it a brighter area with better support from the local council. Sam said: “We are really hoping that local traders and residents join our group so we can encompass the needs of all. If we have more members we have more of a voice.”

At present their members are almost exclusively local independent businesses who take time out of their very busy personal schedules to meet together, having had their first meeting back in May at the local pub. Membership, however, is open to anyone in the area and it would be great to see support by representatives of the large chains who also recognise Mutley Plain as a good place to locate to. There are some great signs that big retailers are finally cottoning on to the fact that community matters – just look at the new campaign in your local Co-op for inspiration. Libby Carswell of Yvonne’s Florists is a big supporter of the Traders Association. The florist has been open for over 50 years and has learnt to think big and little to survive.

Libby explained: “We do offer an Interflora service which links us with other ‘local’

“Whether its posters for the local coffee morning, new kit for the local sports team or supporting and participating in large sporting events such as the Plymouth 10k, Plymouth Half Marathon or Tavy 7 and 13, we love to do our bit to support the communities that ultimately support us.”

“Another advantage the Peverell area is that - unlike other parts of the city - there are very few licensed premises because of the historic covenants which prohibit the development of pubs and clubs.

Mansbridge & Balment’s city centre office is situated in the heart of the community in Mannamead Road, but its involvement with the community goes deeper than its location. The company is principal sponsor of the Plymouth 10k road race and has been extensively involved in supporting local charities, groups and individuals.

Gary Tapp, the owner, moved from Kent to Plymouth 23 years ago with a vision of setting up a barbers that was traditional with a modern twist. His idea was not to have a run of the mill barber shop, which back then tended to be upstairs, but to give his business more kerb appeal and open a barber “shop” on the high street.

We stock all major brands of dog, cat, small animal foods and accessories - Supreme, Burgess, Lilys Kitchen and James Wellbeloved to name just a few.

Darren said: “There is no question that the Peverell area is one of the most popular in the city for prospective buyers. There are excellent primary and secondary school serving the area, plenty of local shopping facilities and fantastic leisure facilities, such as the Life Centre and Central Park.

“They make fine family homes and a sound investment for the future,” he added.

Another business that has stayed the course of time is Barbers of Mutley Plain, the original barbers shop on Mutley Plain.

Pop in and see us!

This combined with the easy access to parks and other green spaces contribute to the appeal of the area. Proximity to the city centre and waterfront with excellent public transport services also ensure its popularity.

“Many of the properties in the area were constructed well over 100 years ago which means their architectural features are particularly impressive,” said Darren.

“We can also cater for the micro market, even sourcing a particular flower requested by a customer, if the season is on our side.”

Support your local Pet Shop!

A combination of the location, local amenities and good schools has ensured that properties in the area are always in demand.

“Some of these legacies have helped to shape the nature of the area and make it sought-after for families and professionals.

Frances was my mother’s first name and is also my middle name and my daughters and my granddaughters! “My daughter, Victoria and I played hairdressers since she could walk, indeed no one could enter our house at one point without having to sit down and have a pretend haircut by the young Victoria! “As time moved on it seemed natural to combine my experience as a beauty therapist with Victoria’s life long ambition to qualify as a hair dresser and so we opened our salon together, over 10 years ago now, with a desire to create a really friendly comfortable place for our customers to enjoy being pampered.

Barbers was the first barber shop of its kind on Mutley Plain and Gary can remember when The Plain was not the place that it is today. He recalls lots of empty shops and business premises and over the years has watched traders come and go. However in recent years, he says, Mutley Plain has been remodelled to become a more vibrant, modern and busy place to Gary Tapp of Barbers shop and he would love to see this built on. Gary’s philosophy is treat people how he would like to be treated and with that in mind he and his staff put customers first and pride themselves on providing good old fashioned personal service. This commitment to customer care has been proven with 23 years of loyal service and in turn 23 years of loyal customers! More good news Jeanne Hinton about bigger businesses working alongside the community can be found in the devlopment of the Mutley Winter Festival, a joint event between Mutley Greenbank Trust and UPSU (University of Plymouth’s Students Union) with support from Sainsbury’s who are providing free refreshments. The festival is open to all and is being held in Moor View Park on November 22 from 12 to 3pm. Jeanne Hinton of the Fesitval committee assures everyone to turn up whatever the weather as they have just splashed out on two marquees which will be a venue for a host of stalls including: Handmade cards, Christmas gifts, Tombola, Bric a brac, face painting and the all important Santa’s Grotto.

MONEY MA££ERS with Tony Jopson

Six things you should teach children about money* As stated previously our current upcoming generation appears to be very short on good money management skills, so I plan to use this column to set out some principles, which if acted on, could reverse this trend. “Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure nineteen pounds nineteen and six, result happiness. Annual income twenty pounds, annual expenditure twenty pounds nought and six, result misery”. How true is the principle! The trick to saving money though is no trick at all, it is simply to spend less than you earn. This can be made easier if you automatically transfer a proportion of your income received each week / month into a separate savings account or even purchase blue chip shares or invest in a pension fund. If you thus treat income as never having been received then you automatically have to manage on the residual. In the meantime a fund is building up in the background for your retirement, child’s education, mortgage repayment etc. It is a lot harder emotionally for you to convince yourself to spend shares in IBM or cash in a bond than to spend £2,000 from a bank account.

Negotiate for a better deal Many people these days are too timid to negotiate and this ends up costing them a lot of money. Always negotiate for major purchases. Shop around, get competitive quotes, and then ask for an even better deal. All businesses have profit margins and getting half of their profit margin to close a sale is usually better for them than losing the deal altogether. Negotiate with your landlord when renting or when renewing your lease. It is expensive and time consuming for landlords to find new tenants, so most landlords will give you a price break for staying. Many television and Internet providers will offer you a better price if you simply call and ask for it — or if you threaten to switch to a new provider. In most cases too, insurance companies will offer you a better deal to keep you as a customer. Good customers are extremely valuable — why not make vendors earn your business. There is massive pressure in our society to borrow of course and indeed the government needs people to borrow so that they will consume and enable the national debt to be serviced (!). If you do have debt problems please don’t despair or do anything rash – take the brave step of admitting the problem to yourself and anyone close to you who needs to know. Then seek independent, professional and confidential help. Apart from ourselves, there are other also

Group of mums launch Saturday French School in Plymouth With France being just a few hours away on the ferry, there’s no wonder so many French nationals have moved to Plymouth and the surrounding areas, where they have found love, work or both, and are now raising bilingual children. Now a group of French mums have decided to open up a Saturday French School to help these children increase their knowledge of French culture and language. Starting in January 2015, and running every Saturday morning from 10am to 12noon, this non-profitable parental association will welcome children aged 6 to 16, with a group for under-fives running at the same time. The cost will be kept to a minimum and parents’ help to keep it running is very welcome. Marriig Quentel-Watson is the founder of the association – named ‘Les Petits Mousses de Plymouth’ (which translates as ‘The Little Ship’s Apprentices of Plymouth’) – and said the mums believe these children would benefit enormously from meeting with other EnglishFrench kids and getting a formal teaching in written French. She said: “The association was created a few years ago when our children were all toddlers. Now that they have grown, we need to ensure that they get the support they need to become fully bilingual, so they speak both languages as well as when they read and write.”

Marriig and her friends are now trying to identify all interested families in Plymouth and the surrounding areas. She added: “If you speak French at home and would like your kids to get this extra support two hours a week, please contact us quickly! It is also a great opportunity to meet with other French families from the area.” For those aged 5 and under, there is already an ongoing creative and fun workshop taking

place every Saturday morning. This group is named “Les Choco’mousses” (‘The chocolate ship’s apprentices’) and can be contacted immediately on leschocomousses@gmail.com The email address of the French Saturday School is lespetitsmoussesdeplymouth@gmail. com, you can also find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/Les-PetitsMousses-de-Plymouth/276010619258047?Notif_ t=fbpage_fan_invite

Popular sci-fi convention taking place at Future Inn A science fiction and fantasy convention that has been running in Plymouth for 26 years is returning to the city in November.

ArmadaCon is taking place at The Future Inn at Derriford Business Park on November 14 to 16 starting at 6pm on Friday evening until the small hours of Monday morning, but day tickets are available which allow people to experience the convention for a fraction of the cost. Chris Nicholls, co-chair of ArmadaCon’s committee said: “We have always tried to keep the weekend as fresh and interesting as possible, last year we achieved that and we were rewarded with a lot of new faces. This year we are going for an even bigger event and the list of activities on offer is huge.

shopping centre with everything from original art to American sweets.

Their two main guests this year are Andrew Cartmel, who was script editor on Doctor Who in the 80s and still works in TV and Philip Reeve, a prolific author and illustrator. ArmadaCon has, over the years, raised significant funds for charity. Their most recent charity was the RNIB’s Talking Books for the Blind. Last year, however, the attendees were given the chance to vote on the charity ArmadaCon would be raising money for next and they were pleased to announce at their closing ceremony that they will be supporting local charity St Luke’s Hospice.

“Some of my personal favourites include Lego Speed Building, Scrapheap Costuming, Guest Panels and our Steampunk Tea Duelling sponsored by Plymouth Tea. But we’ve also left space for relaxing with other fans and playing games.”

Gary Loveridge, one of the organisers of ArmadaCon said: “In a very tight vote, attendees chose St Luke’s Hospice. This touched me enormously, as my family has benefited from the care, skills and dedication of St Luke’s. It fills me with great pride, that our attendees and friends will be just as generous as they have been in the past.”

They also have a professional photographer on hand to capture images of costumes and a packed pop-up

Lest we forget... The whole nation is recognising and honouring the 100th anniversary of the First World War. The war to end all wars, they said. Our local historian Chris Robinson has written a book about the part Plymouth played as a city in 1914 – 18 war and we have managed to obtain an interview with Chris which will be broadcast before Christmas. As a military town it is fascinating to recognise the part our city played in representing the war effort at the time. Within the interview we have some audio interviews of those who were there at the time in the trenches at Christmas, both Germans and British soldiers, joining together to sing ‘Silent night.’

says: ‘Communities all over the country are commemorating the start of the First World War. In villages, towns and cities we will remember the fallen. HOPE is supporting local churches by equipping and encouraging them to give practical and prayerful support to their communities.’ This is part of Hope14 - a year when churches are working together investing in local communities, putting faith into words and action in a rhythm of mission through the church calendar – at Easter, Pentecost, Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas.

The ‘Greater Love’ resources, as they are called, are endorsed by HRH Prince Charles, and both the Archbishops of Canterbury and York. Roy Crowne, HOPE’s Executive Director, says: ‘Remembrance is a key moment in the calendar when communities expect the church to play a part. It is a natural season to serve and connect with your neighbourhood. Let’s bring the church to the heart of these Remembrance moments. ‘My prayer is that we come together, find out what is going on in our village, town or city, and join in so there is a church presence at every

memorial service: the church echoing the heart-beat of its community and pointing to the “greater love” Jesus has for us.’

It is helpful for us all to remember, lest we forget and end up not learning from history. Many of our schools have been working in their localities and Kerry and I were at Truro Cathedral recently, looking at all the local school displays where students were remembering great grandparents who had gone through World War One. Conference on provision of services for disabled youngsters Parents and carers of children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities will be able to hear first-hand how Plymouth is responding to the new Children and Families Act at a special event being held next month. On November 4 Plymouth Parent Partnership and Your Child Your Voice are cohosting a conference for families, giving them a chance to talk to managers and commissioners from across the council and ask the questions that really matter to them. Alongside the conference, a ‘market place’ of support services will be available in the Guildhall where families can see what support is available for them. Plymouth’s Local Offer is a source of information for parents, young people and professionals, which helps them to understand what services they and their family can expect from a range of local agencies – including their statutory entitlements. The

local offer covers provision for children and young people from birth to 25 and includes information on education, health and social care services. Invitations have already gone out through schools and via the council’s Children’s Integrated Disabilities Service, but the organisers are keen that every parent who may be affected by the changes is aware of the event. To make the conference accessible to as many parents as possible, there are sessions taking place in the morning and evening. Full details of the timings are available in Plymouth Parent Partnership’s website www.plymouthparentpartnership.org.uk , where you can also book your place. If you have a child with Special Educational Needs or Disability and have not yet booked your space, contact Claire at Plymouth Parent Partnership on 01752 258933 or go to the Parent Partnership website. Stoke Damerel students raise £11,500 to fund trip to Italy A group of Plymouth students have turned more than two tons of unwanted clothes into cash as part of their efforts to raise a colossal £11,500 towards the cost of their trip to Italy next month.

car-washing, card and chocolate-making and even dogsitting.

The group of 38 Humanities students at Stoke Damerel Community College have been fundraising for two years to help pay for the trip as well as equipment like personalised hoodies and polo shirts to wear when they are away.

Year 9 student Grace Chadwick said she was “counting the days” until the trip began. “I’ve been fundraising since Year 7 for this trip so I can’t believe it’s actually here,” she said. “I think working so hard towards raising the money makes a real difference and now it all seems worthwhile.

Leaving on November 5 the students - from year groups 8-12 - will be visiting Pompeii and Herculaneum, studying the tectonics of Mount Vesuvius and Solfatara volcanoes and the coastal features of the Isle of Capri as well as fitting in a visit to Naples Archaeological Museum. “Students have worked so hard and given up many weekends to pack bags at the Co-op, Sainsbury’s and Asda,” said Karen Hill from the Humanities department, who has coordinated the fundraising effort.

“We are also extremely grateful for sponsorship and donations from Unison Community Funding, the Christine Woodmancy Trust, Community Funding from Councillor Sam Davey and Pupil Premium Funding,” said Miss Hill.

“I’m looking forward to going to Mount Vesuvius most of all - it’s not every day you get to climb a volcano.” Miss Hill said she was “very proud” of the students’ commitment.

“We recycled over two tons of clothes for cash as well as selling some of it on eBay – we also held regular bake sales. “We’ve also been very lucky to have so much support from parents and staff.” Students have come up with countless other innovative ways to raise further funds towards the cost of the sixKaren Hill (left) and Grace Chadwick (right) pose with the school’s statue of day trip including sponsored swims, explorer Robert Falcon Scott ahead of their own adventure

Plymouth City Council’s arts and heritage service has successfully secured over £36,000 of funding from Arts Council England (ACE) for a special lighting project, which will see iconic buildings in each of the original ‘Three Town’ areas transformed into illuminated beacons. ‚ On Friday November 28, Smeaton’s Tower lighthouse, the Palace Theatre in Stonehouse and Devonport Guildhall will be brought to life with video projections featuring photographs, images and memories inspired by the local communities.

FATHER’S

Joe Ferrante has ministered to church and business leaders from many nations over the past 40 years. His teaching on the Father Heart of God comes out of his own journey to discover the freedom God’s love brings from condemnation and shame. His life message portrays an extravagant God who desires well-being, creativity and fruitfulness for every person.

The 100th anniversary of the amalgamation of the three towns of Plymouth, East Stonehouse and Devonport will be celebrated in lights in November.

inspire the projections. Phil Gibby, area director, South West, Arts Council England said: “This project is an outstanding example of how public art can celebrate and – in this case literally – illuminate the history of a city and its people. We are delighted to have been able to support it through our National Lottery-funded Grants for the Arts scheme.” Councillor Peter Smith, deputy leader of Plymouth City Council said: “The amalgamation of the Three Towns in 1914 is a key milestone in the journey that made Plymouth what it is today. Light Fantastic is a brilliant opportunity for us to mark an historic occasion in an innovative and inclusive way that will engage with communities and create a real spectacle. I’m really looking forward to seeing the end result.”

On Saturday November 29, the Civic Centre will be the venue for a combined finale projection. The ‘Light Fantastic’ illuminations will run between 6.30pm and 9pm on both evenings and people may even be able to spot themselves on the buildings.

Light Fantastic is one of a number of light-themed events taking place across Plymouth this November. These include Bonfire Night on the Hoe, the Christmas lights switch-ons in the city centre and on the Barbican and ‘Illuminate’ at the Mayflower Steps and Smeaton’s Tower.

Illuminos, the artists behind the project, ran community workshops in each of the Three Town areas collecting the memories, ideas, thoughts and images that will

Siblings likely to be separated if adoptive families can’t be found soon Local adoption charity, Families for Children, are appealing for potential adopters to come forward who will consider adopting a sibling group. If adoptive families cannot be found soon then it is likely that these brothers and sisters will be separated. This plea comes after national figures suggest that just under half of all children waiting for adoptive families are sibling groups; brothers and/or sisters who need to be placed together. Caroline Davies, the charity’s chief executive officer said: “Most of the sibling groups waiting for adoption are two

children who want to stay together. Research indicates that it is often in the best interests of the children that they do stay together as separation could result in further traumatic experiences and anxiety for them. “Adopting a sibling group may be a daunting prospect, and while there will be challenges the benefits and rewards for both parents and children are huge.” Ahead of National Adoption Week which runs from November 3 to 9 the charity are launching their campaign ‘Children who play together should stay together’ and have set up a unique project, Family for Me, specifically to find families for sibling groups. The project currently has seven sets of sibling groups of varying ages and gender to find families from across the county.

Kate and Simon have recently adopted a sibling group of two brothers through the project and they said: “The boys were here with us in our hearts and minds long before they arrived here in person. Being assessed through the Family For Me project allowed us to really consider what our lives would be like with them here with us.” “When the moment we were waiting for arrived and we could finally meet them we already felt we knew them – we were meeting our boys. Despite all the boys had been through we were told about their brotherly bond and it is clear to see. Now they are here our house is busy, lively and full of love and laughter. “If the right family hadn’t been found for the boys together they may have been placed in separate families

Looking at them here, watching them play together that breaks our hearts. We are so glad we found them – we are all together; a family at last.” Families for Children are keen to let potential adopters know that they offer a lifetime of support for their families should they need it. This support ranges from practical advice on everyday parenting to therapeutic counselling and birth family tracing. Families for Children will be holding an information event on Monday November 3 at the Place de Brest in Plymouth from 10am to 3pm. To find out more about the sibling groups waiting for adoption through Family for Me contact Cat on 01364 645480 or visit www.familyforme.co.uk

Bereaved teenagers create a musical masterpiece with city music charity Not all teenagers get the chance to write their own song and have it recorded in a professional music studio, but for young people supported by Jeremiah’s Journey, this is exactly what happened.

A local music charity gave them an opportunity to express their feelings of grief and to talk about hope after sadness using creative music-making. The two Plymouth charities came together because Jeremiah’s Journey offers support to children and their families when facing grief, listening to the individual needs of each family. They wanted to provide a bespoke group for teenagers and Plymouth Music Zone’s ‘Music for a Change’ project proved to be a perfect fit. The resulting piece of music that the young people composed and recorded, “Catching a Cloud to the Future” is an uplifting story about hope and looking to the future. The young people who created the track said: “We enjoyed being a part of Plymouth Music Zone project because it was fun and interactive and we got to use different equipment we had never used before. The adults helped but didn’t do it for us and we

always felt good afterwards, even if we started off feeling a bit sad or had had a bad day. We feel you can be sad but still have a good time.”

‘Music for a Change’, funded by the National Foundation for Youth Music, is a special strand of Plymouth Music Zone’s delivery that involves providing ‘musical respite’ sessions to support some of the most emotionally vulnerable children and their families, who may be dealing with particularly difficult or traumatic changes in their lives. Joanne Anning, chief executive of Jeremiah’s Journey said: “I think for me it was an amazing process to be alongside from the beginning when people nervously came through the door not knowing what to expect, to the last session where the group were keen to perfect their song! The teenagers wanted to share their experiences through music to help others who are facing a similar situation. I wholeheartedly thank them for their courage and openness.” Anna Batson, music leader at PMZ added: “The aim was to create a piece of music that would encourage and inspire others to feel hopeful and supported at difficult points in their lives when losing a close loved one. We were in awe of the boys’ ability to leave their inhibitions and fears behind in order to share

some of their amazing strength and love with others facing similarly difficult times.” To listen to their track please visit www. jeremiahsjourney.org.uk/catchingacloud In addition to the musical project Jeremiah’s Journey asked Russell Soper of Soperfect Images and creator of the Camera Kids Club if his team would like to be involved in photographing an image that would act as an album cover. The brief was to reflect the song title ‘Catching a Cloud to the Future’. Russell Soper added: “Kira and Roma both enjoyed the challenge of putting a photo to the song title. First they discussed ideas and designed story boards, before going off to try a number of options. “Their confidence and creativity grew as they experimented with the camera settings and their photographic ideas. They realised it was more difficult to compose the image and worked brilliantly as a team. It is a great achievement for them and they were able to explore some of the city at the same time. They are thrilled with the response to their image.” The final image taken by Kira and Roma is shown opposite It felt fitting that two 13 year olds captured what the teenagers were trying to express in their song.

Barack Obama invited to join Mayflower 2020 celebrations US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister David Cameron have been urged to back big celebrations planned for Mayflower 2020. Council leader Tudor Evans has written a joint letter with Therese Murray, the Senate President of Massachusetts, to the two leaders urging them to support the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower from Plymouth and the subsequent landing of the Pilgrims in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Both cities want the important event to establish cultural, economic, military, educational and community links between the two Plymouths, culminating in a Presidential visit to the Mayflower Steps in Plymouth and a Royal visit to Plymouth Rock. It reads: No other event so embodies the centuries of the

shared cultural values and traditions that underpin the special friendship that has seen our two nations and their people stand shoulder to shoulder through history. The Mayflower voyage clearly symbolises our shared history and our ties of common language and culture. Beyond that, however, it represents a set of fundamental values and beliefs which we share in common. At the heart of those beliefs lie the concepts of individual freedom and liberty, which bind us together and set us apart from so many other states across the world today. In a quite literal sense the Mayflower Voyage in 1620 carried on board the flame of those precious concepts. As Winston Churchill said, the “…Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, Habeas Corpus, trial by jury, and English common law find their most famous expression in the American Declaration of Independence.” Beyond our Plymouth to Plymouth celebrations we believe that the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower has enormous potential benefits for both of our nations and we would respectfully request your joint support in helping to realise those benefits. With your shared blessing we would ask that our respective

Governments work together with us to realise an ambitious programme of events to commemorate the sheer achievement of the Mayflower voyage and to celebrate the values of liberty and freedom that, as its consequence, we share in common today.

This landmark anniversary will be an opportunity for us all to: Commemorate the 1620 Mayflower voyage as an important narrative in America’s beginning. Honour the achievements and sacrifice of our armed forces over more than a century as they stood shoulder to shoulder through two World Wars and the current war on terror. Celebrate the legacy of the Mayflower’s lineage in the millions of Americans now living who descend directly from the original 102 members of the Mayflower families. Shine a spotlight on the story of interdependence and the first Thanksgiving. We hope that you both share our vision and aspiration for Mayflower 2020 and that, in consequence, you will actively pursue with us the opportunities for a truly remarkable year to commemorate a truly remarkable friendship.

The letter’s been sent as Plymouth plays host to a workshop with partners from Plymouth Massachusetts, Leiden in Holland, Boston in Lincolnshire, Harwich, Southampton and Dartmouth. Mayflower 2020 is very much seen as an international commemoration and the council are working with all these areas, as well as key city partnerships including, Visit England and Visit Britain to develop a joint programme over the next five years culminating in the exciting 2020 celebrations.

Memories of Frankfort Gate in the 70s The area of Frankfort Gate, together with the nearby premises, was once a bustling shopping area for all the family. Today, it has been ‘re-branded’ as the West End (probably by the same committee that re-branded Plymouth as ‘the Ocean City’) but was previously just called the ‘bottom end of town’ by many people. It’s still reasonably busy but not so much as it once was.

Derek Tait recalls the time when what was known as ‘the bottom end of town’ was a bustling centre for shoppers. Derek has had many other books published including Plymouth at War; Images of England: Plymouth; Saltash Passage; Memories of St Budeaux; Plymouth Hoe; Mount Edgcumbe; Plymouth Tales From the Past; Plymouth Through Time; Saltash Through Time and Rame Peninsula Through Time. Derek’s website can be found at www.derektait.co.uk for many years. Many shops sold posters at the time and Pace Posters, now long forgotten, were very popular. These could be found in newsagents everywhere and adorned all kids’ bedroom walls.

In the late 1970s, the area, where Toys R Us stands today, was just cleared land which was used as an open car park for most of the time and on certain days, as an open air market. It sold a variety of items such as household wares, shoes, clothes, prints and mirrors featuring the images of Elvis, the Fonz or Starsky and Hutch or, if you were more classy, Southern Comfort. I’m sure that Chris Dawson had a stall there selling items from a large lorry. Walking across the stretch of land led you to the Odeon Cinema in Union Street which, at the time, had a huge mural of Marilyn Monroe on its side (I wish I had a photo of it). The cinema was hugely popular together with the Drake and the ABC by Derry’s Cross. A zebra crossing took you across the road from the car park to Jack Cohen’s Joke Shop. Every boy loved the shop which sold itching powder, stink bombs, inky soap and a variety of other practical jokes and pranks which were played on teachers and parents daily by naughty schoolboys. Jack served in the shop

and was lovely to everyone. At the bottom of Frankfort Gate, was a shop selling collectable stamps which stood there for many years. Boys were very keen to collect stamps, as were adults, and apart from stamps the shop also sold albums and other related items. Shops selling collectable coins also traded in the area. Many of the common hobbies of the 1960s and 1970s have now long since died off. Nearby was Bonus Books. They sold second-hand books but also took your old ones in part exchange for others. The great draw for kids was that they had many annuals as well as comics, including endless American ones, which featured superheroes such as Spiderman and Superman. Then there was the Poster Shop which always seemed to have a poster of Debbie Harry in the window. As well as posters, they sold badges featuring the names of all the latest bands as well as various other stuff, some relating to the cartoon dog, Snoopy. The shop was open

On the corner, nearest the market, was the only charity shop I can remember in town at the time. Oxfam wasn’t quite like it is today. It sold clothes as they were donated, none were washed, and the shop had its own peculiar pong. For people who enjoyed visiting, it was easy to find items or clothing dating, sometimes, back to wartime. The whiff of someone’s old clothes was always a giveaway on the bus back home which mixed with the smell of endless cigarette smoke (sometimes from the driver). On the other side of the street, as in Union Street, there were various second-hand shops selling things like old televisions, reel-to-reel tape recorders, cine projectors and records and record players. All redundant now due to the digital age. Across the way, was the indoor market which was always incredibly busy and sold fruit and veg, clothes, pets, jewellery, collectables and knic-knacs. Many kids had a rabbit, hamster or budgie as a pet in the 1970s and the market was the place to get them. The second-hand record stall was very popular and records could be bought or traded in. The stall was there for at least thirty years and had a huge ‘wanted’ poster, featuring a cowboy and gun, requesting your old records. Leaving the back door into Cornwall Street, a short walk took you to

Woolworth’s. Many items seemed to cost 6/6d and they sold everything you needed as well as paintings, one of the most popular being seagulls flying over a Cornish coast (only seen in doctor’s waiting rooms nowadays!) I was reminded recently that Woolworth’s also had its own photo booth and for 20p you could get a strip of four photos. There was always a queue for the machine but people weren’t getting their photos taken for driving licences or passports, it was John Mildon and Derek Tait in just the novelty of the Wooldworth’s photo booth in having your photo the 1970s taken and seeing it instantly. The photo booth at Bretonside was equally as popular. Of course, the area has changed greatly over the years and many of the shops that were once there in the 1970s have gone forever. Today, there’s more tattoo shops, takeaways, phone and computer shops and all the things needed for a modern life. Times change but many of the old shops are still fondly remembered.

The Plymouth Shopper

Legally Speaking By Greg Yates of Howard & Over Solicitors

Need advice: just pick Occasionally I write an article about how people create problems for themselves by not taking legal advice early. My colleague Katherine Millman wrote an excellent piece in last month’s Shopper about wills and probate. My first story this month is about an executor of an estate who decided to save costs by not using a solicitor. It went horribly wrong! The Probate Office for some reason is suggesting that you deal with probate yourself. We were recently involved in a case where somebody had done that. The executor had filed a statement (prepared without legal advice) which showed that the estate was well under the Inheritance Tax threshold of £325,000. The assets were then sold and money was distributed in accordance with the will. No problem you would think. Unfortunately, the executor had not included a property in London worth well over £1 million. The basic rate of Inheritance Tax over the threshold is 40 per cent. When this came to light the executor had to pay to the Revenue the tax due, together with additional penalties. In the circumstances of this particular case the beneficiaries had not disposed of the money that they had received so they were able to pay back money to the executor to pay the revenue. Can you imagine the cost to the executor if the beneficiaries had utilised the money and could not pay it back? The effort of trying to save a few pounds resulted in considerable expense not to mention the stress of owing a large sum of money to the Revenue. I saw a client recently whose relationship had broken down. They were not married; the house was in her sole name. She informed me that she was going to sell the house and give her former boyfriend half because ‘He’s entitled to 50 per cent as we have been together for 10 years’. I explained that she was not married, and he had no interest in the house. It could remain a home for her and her child. The look of relief on her face was a delight to see. It clearly had been worrying her for many months. Compare and contrast that with a client I saw recently. Her happy marriage had imploded without warning, her husband had left her. Her first thought was to take advantage of our free initial interview. She was given clear simple advice as to the way forward. We clarified a number of issues about finances and the children. In the space of 20 minutes she was reassured that no urgent actions was required and she could adjust to her new circumstances before coming back to see me again. So for any legal issue, pick up the phone. Vital vote on future of city centre Ten years of success, 15 national awards and a real voice for retail both in Plymouth and the region – Plymouth City Council should continue to back the BID, the city’s Working Plymouth Overview and Scrutiny Panel has heard. Councillor Mark Lowry, Cabinet member for Finance and city centre champion told the panel the Council should carry on giving financial and in-kind support to the Plymouth City Centre Company which runs the BID. He said: “Our city centre is hugely important to the city – to the economy and the perception of Plymouth. Over five million visitors come here every year and nearly 40 per cent say shopping is one of their main activities. “We need an organisation that can devote time and energy to making the city centre a success and work with the businesses to keep shoppers coming in. “We have that. the City Centre Company has proved time and time again that it has risen to the task – listening to traders, shoppers and helping to keep Plymouth on top, despite really challenging circumstances for the high street.” A ballot is due to take place in March next year among city centre businesses to see if they wish to renew the Business Improvement District and to endorse the direction the BID will take up until the year 2020, if they vote in favour of continuing. A Business Improvement District for the Plymouth City Centre is an important element of the Council’s Corporate Plan and a crucial element of the city’s visitor plan and Local Economic Strategy. Businesses in the district pay a levy based on the rate-able value of their business representing an investment of £2,150,000 over five years. Ahead of the vote extensive consultations have been carried out with key city stakeholders through meetings, surveys and workshops.

The winter nights are drawing in as November begins and the activity for Big Energy Saving week in October comes to a close, the next few months bring more energy campaign issues to our door this time in the form of prepayment meters!

Winter is coming and we want fairplay for prepay customers electricity up front as they feel it gives them greater control over their money, but others are forced to pay in this way. Customers who have fallen behind with their energy bills may find their supplier insists they have a prepayment meter installed which stops them racking up debt.

The Citizens Advice Bureau has launched Fair Play for Prepay – a new energy campaign in order to get a fairer deal for the 7.6 million customers with a prepayment meter. One in six energy customers pay for gas and electricity in advance by topping up their prepayment meter via a card from their local store. Other industries that allow people to pay up front for services, like mobile phones, have come up with more innovative ways to add credit, but energy customers still have to top-up by going to a nearby shop.

Prepayment meter users deserve better than a second class service; Citizens Advice wants energy suppliers to: • Raise the level of customer service for prepayment meter users in line with other payment methods By Claire Bower of Advice Plymouth

Advice Plymouth is taking part in the national Citizens Advice campaign to get a better deal for prepayment customers. The ‘Fair play for prepay’ campaign is asking energy companies to offer a greater choice of tariffs and more innovative ways to top up. Evidence from Ofgem has found that prepayment meter customers aren’t just inconvenienced by the system – they are also paying more. The cost of their gas and electricity tends to be around £80 more each year than other payment methods. Peter Lock Advice Plymouth Manager said: “Energy firms also need to look at boosting choice for prepayment customers. Having one or two options to choose from is not enough to make this part of the market competitive and drive down prices.” Some customers choose to pay for their gas and

Alison Seabeck MP in climate change meeting Alison Seabeck, MP for Plymouth Moor View, met Christian Aid partners from the Philippines and Bolivia, to hear first-hand what it is like to live with the reality of climate change and how it is affecting the world’s poor most acutely. Ms Seabeck met Voltaire Alferez, who runs a group of organisations campaigning on climate change in the Philippines, and Elizabeth Peredo, director of Fundación Solón which campaigns on climate change in Bolivia. The meetings were part of Christian Aid’s Hunger for Justice weekend, which

also included Alison meeting activists in Plymouth. Alison Seabeck MP said: “It was really interesting to meet people like Voltaire and Elizabeth who have come face to face with a changing climate. Climate change is increasingly affecting new parts of the world but it is the world’s poorest who are affected by it most. The statistics are sobering enough but the problem is really brought to life when you meet someone who is living with it and they tell you their story. “Christian Aid is an important organisation, which carries out its work across the world, addressing a variety of causes of poverty, including one that we often don’t consider - climate change.”

Seven editions reaching 62,000 homes

Consultant’s commando fund-raiser A consultant anaesthetist from Derriford Hospital in Plymouth, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year, has re-run the commando test that he took on nearly 25 years ago.

All smiles...David Birt and his team at the end of the 30 mile run

David Birt, from Tavistock, accompanied by his son, Harry (20) and three friends with whom he has deployed on military operations - Andy Burgess, anaesthetist, Royal Navy, Tony Cramp, ex-Fleet Air Arm helicopter pilot and Martin Allison, Sergeant, Royal Marines, took on the All Arms Commando Course to raise funds for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

David’s aim was to re-run the final Commando Test – the ‘30-miler’ – in less than 12 hours, which is no mean feat for a 49 year old – but doubly challenging as he has to cope with chemotherapy treatment every fortnight. However, not only did David and his team complete the challenge, they did so in a very respectable time of eight hours, 20 minutes. The five-strong team were supported along the route by their wives and friends. David’s wife, Sara, said: “This challenge has raised a tremendous amount - to date over £20,000 with the Gift Aid. What has been so moving has been the outpouring of goodwill, which we have seen.

The donation to Hembury Ward has been used to refurbish their patient day room and Dental Specialities and Maxillofacial Surgery have used it to help with the refurbishment of the education room. In 2009, Sarah was diagnosed with adenoid cyst carcinoma, a rare type of

cancer in her mouth. In appreciation for the care she received following her diagnosis, she decided to take on the challenge of the Plymouth Half Marathon.

“But it has been the Cheerfulness which has shone the most brightly throughout - David’s attitude to life which makes the world a better place for everyone who knows him.

A memorial garden is set to be built at Derriford Hospital for those who have experienced the loss of a baby.

Sarah said: “My small contribution has gone towards a new room in ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) which has now been refurbished to provide a pleasant space for teaching, resting and the allimportant sensitive meetings and discussions that ‘us’ patients dread. “I was honoured to be invited to see the new room and really feel that they have created an excellent space in order to improve their service, the patients’ experience and the very long journey after diagnosis.”

“This was a challenge which took real courage to undertake, determination to see it through, and unselfishness to even think of it.

Memorial garden to be built at Derriford

Sarah’s marathon effort Sarah Corner, a ward manager at Derriford Hospital, raised £564 by doing a sponsored run, which has been split between Hembury Ward and Dental Specialities and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Comments on the Just Giving page show the very deep affection and respect which people have for David. This is not from just a few friends, but from literally hundreds of people.

Leading the project is LeighAnne Hedges, who runs the non-profit company ‘Little Things Angel Clothes’, making clothes for tiny babies who have died. She said: “I am so pleased that the space has now been allocated and work can begin. The aim is to provide a calm and tranquil space for families to go when they need quiet time to think and remember their child who died. “It represents every type of baby loss, including miscarriage, non-viable babies, still birth or toddlers and there will eventually be opportunities to place a simple memorial to a child. I hope this

helps Plymouth parents know someone is thinking about them in their grief and that their precious child is still remembered.” Andrew Davies, service lead environment and sustainability for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “The trust is very pleased to be able to support LeighAnne in this very worthwhile project. “The Trust has identified a very suitable area where people can reflect and enjoy the natural environment.

“We will continue to help and guide LeighAnne in any way possible to ensure this project is a success and encourage other businesses in the community to show their support where possible.” LeighAnne is keen to get as much help as possible and is looking for anyone who has links to building companies and thinks they may be able to help with the project to get in contact with her.
