DOMAINE LABRUYÈRE 2019

DOMAINE LABRUYÈRE 2019 Gamay, but not as you know it…

2

If anything can change your mind about the poor maligned Gamay grape, these wines can. Every variety has a corner of the wine world where it thrives and I would argue that Gamay’s sweet spot is right here, in Moulin-à-Vent. The sparse mineralcharged granitic soils are the perfect foil for Gamay’s flesh and cherried loveliness. Opposites attract. Domaine Labruyère is the oldest estate in Moulin-àVent, founded in 1850. It consists of 14 hectares of vines.

Geographically, this is Beaujolais, although you can feel the pull of Burgundy to the north in Le Carquelin’s gorgeous Pinot-like purity and the Rhône to the south, in the layered spices of Le Clos. We have been Domaine Labruyère’s exclusive UK agent since the 2013 vintage. As we embark on our seventh release, I struggle to think of any better value proposition in the C&B stable. Low production wines of supreme drinkability, pedigree, a sense of place and ageing potential.

“The Gamay grape and Moulin-à-Vent were made for each other…” GUY SEDDON, JANUARY 2021

DOMAINE LABRUYÈRE 2019

HISTORY 4

In 1850, Jean-Marie Labruyère bought ten hectares of vines around Les Thorins, a hamlet in the Romanèche-Thorins commune of the Saône-et-Loire department. 150 years later, the family acquired Le Clos du Moulin-à-Vent. It is the sole monopole in the region and lies beside the iconic windmill. Edouard Labruyère, who grew up at the estate, is the seventh generation to run it. Edouard took over in 2008 and together with winemaker Nadine Gublin and viticulturalist Michel Rovere, is on a mission to bring Moulin-à-Vent and the Gamay grape the recognition they deserve.

5 Edouard Labruyère

THE TEAM Édouard Labruyère was born in 1976 at the domaine. His life in wine started in 2003, first as a courtier in Bordeaux, before taking over the family’s wine interests in 2008. In addition to Domaine Labruyère, these include Domaine Jacques Prieur (Meursault), Château Rouget (Pomerol) and Champagne J.M. Labruyère (Verzenay, Montagne de Reims). Nadine Gublin has been head winemaker at Domaine Labruyère since 1988. She is a recipient of the Winemaker of the Year award from the Revue du Vin de France, the only French woman to have been so recognised. Nadine is also in charge of winemaking at the other Labruyère family properties. Michel Rovere is Chef de Culture and Chef de Cave at Domaine Labruyère. Born in Mâcon, Michel has lived all his life in Romanèche Thorins in the heart of Moulin-à-Vent. He joined Domaine Labruyère in 1984 at the age of 18 and has stayed with the family ever since.

The short, stubby vines are spur-pruned and trained in the traditional gobelet style, cut back almost to the vine-head during the winter. Keeping the grapes low to the ground provides some frost protection from reflected heat, the

trade-off being a risk of fungal disease from humidity. Although the appellation permits 52 hectolitres per hectare (hl/ha), Domaine Labruyère’s yields fall between 22 and 35 hl/ha. The domaine, which has long been managed sustainably, began conversion to organics in 2020.

THE CELLARS The hand-picked Gamay grapes are sorted twice. Whole bunch fermentation is used flexibly according to the vintage. In 2019, Champ de Cour is a third whole bunch vinified and Coeur de Terroirs 20%, the others being fully destemmed. Following a brief cold maceration and fermentation in 50 hectolitre concrete vats, the wines mature in oak, with small proportions of new oak barrels – less than 5% for

Coeur de Terroirs, a maximum of 10% for Champ de Cour and Le Carquelin. Le Clos is the only exclusively barrelaged wine, with just 10% new oak in 2019. The domaine uses an increasing proportion of 600 litre oak demi-muids. Its second-hand 228 litre pièces come from Domaine Jacques Prieur in Meursault. Winemaking errs on the side of reduction, with very limited racking. The wines are transferred to concrete vats pre-bottling.

DOMAINE LABRUYÈRE 2019

2019 VINTAGE NOTES

8

A mild, sunny, dry winter, a cool spring and a summer which alternated between scorching heat and cooler interludes. A dry year of very low yields. Following a dry, cold January, February was milder and sunny, leading into an early spring and a precocious budburst. April was cold and rainy, which damaged some buds, reducing potential volumes. April and May were largely cool, resulting in a late flowering in June, which ended amid a heatwave. July was sunny and hot, with evenly distributed rainfall ensuring a sufficient water supply. August was cooler, meaning véraison (colour change) occurred slightly later than average. Harvest at Domaine Labruyère started on 13th September. Nadine Gublin said the grapes were “in perfect conditions” and called her 2019s “a very easy vintage to drink”.

The Bourgogne Gamay is an early drinking celebration of the Gamay grape and the Coeur de Terroirs a blend of four distinct parcels. The three single vineyard wines are shaped by their terroirs and have a. decade and more of ageing potential.

DOMAINE LABRUYÈRE 2019

BOURGOGNE GAMAY From a variety of plots in and around Moulin-à-Vent, this is all about the upfront approachability and loveliness of the Gamay grape. Brightly red-fruited on the nose, it is unmistakeably Gamay, brimming with joyful, pure red cherries. The palate is pliant, juicy and yet focused, revelling in bright strawberry fruit, red cherry and raspberry coulis. Vinified in 600L barrels. Corney & Barrow Score 16.5 Recommended drinking from 2022 - 2025 £85/CASE OF 6 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK

MOULIN-À-VENT COEUR DE TERROIRS

A blend of four parcels in Moulin-à-Vent, planted with 50 year-old vines. This has an imposing, intense nose of bitter black cherry. The palate has a cool precision and a supple cushioning to the mid-palate, a mineral richness speaking of its granite soils, abundant in manganese and quartz. 20% whole bunch fermentation, in concrete tanks. Half the wine is matured in old oak barrels, half in 600 litre demi-muids. THE SINGLE VINEYARD WINES CHAMP DE COUR Champ de Cour is a south-east facing site, planted with 50+ year-old vines on granite soils, with pebbles under thick, dense clay. Dried herbs and deft exotic spices on the nose. The palate’s cool raspberry fruit is underscored by dark, rocky minerality, with black pepper and a savoury, sous bois herbaceousness. Substantial, but rendered so elegantly. A third whole bunch vinified in 2019, then aged in 600 litre old oak demi-muids for 15 months. Corney & Barrow Score 17.5 Recommended drinking from 2024 - 2032+ £125/CASE OF 6 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK £135/CASE OF 3 MAGNUMS, IN BOND UK

LE CARQUELIN As Nadine Gublin says, Le Carquelin is located in “the heart of the best granite soils of Moulin-à-Vent”. A 1.75 hectare south-facing slope, with 50 year old vines on friable granite. Plusher, more sweetly fruited (more Pinot Noir-like perhaps?), with silky raspberry and red cherry fruit framed by elegant, supple tannins and held in a fine rocky mineral tension. Svelte and polished, an absolute delight. 100% destemmed, then aged in oak barrels, just 5% of which are new. Corney & Barrow Score 18 Recommended drinking from 2024 - 2032+ £145/CASE OF 6 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK £155/CASE OF 3 MAGNUMS, IN BOND UK

LE CLOS DU MOULIN-À-VENT, MONOPOLE Le Clos, beside the iconic windmill, is the only monopole in Moulin-à-Vent. It is a 0.92 hectare south-facing walled vineyard, planted with 70+ year-old untrellised vines. Arid soils of hard granite and sand, very rocky and with no topsoil at all. Intense raspberry and cherry essence aromas, with a hint of liquorice. The substantial palate is stridently assured, its plush red and black berry fruit exuding Syrah-like spices, within a supremely stonymineral chassis which lends a clipped precision to the rich palate fruit. A long, darkly perfumed finish. Wonderful. 100% destemmed, then aged in oak barrels, 10% new oak. Corney & Barrow Score 18+ Recommended drinking from 2025 - 2035 £225/CASE OF 6 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK £240/CASE OF 3 MAGNUMS, IN BOND UK
