INTRODUCTION I like to imagine Michel and Bastien Tardieu as Rhône knights searching, Don Quixote-like, for the ideal wine from each appellation of their beloved valley.

A bit fanciful maybe. Michel and Bastien are certainly more grounded than Cervantes’ heroes and have a very real knack of sourcing tiny parcels of top terroirs from small, family-run growers. They are what you could call super-négociants – they buy in grapes, vinify them in the regions of origin and then mature them all under one roof. ‘Super’ in the sense that… well, their wines are brilliant. The only downside is that there is precious little to go around.

The wines in this offer come from a 300km stretch, from Côte-Rôtie in the north to Bandol in the south. TardieuLaurent’s home, where élevage takes place, is Lourmarin, in Provence – a dream location (and one we were especially sorry not to visit in this Coronavirus year). Corney & Barrow has been Michel and Bastien Tardieu’s exclusive UK agent since 2002, just six years after this family operation was established. We are proud to now represent them exclusively in Hong Kong also.

2019: THE GROWING SEASON “A vintage of extremes and paradoxes!” MICHEL TARDIEU, JULY 2020

“Although yields on Grenache are historically low, the high quality of the remaining grapes and their juice owes much to a brilliant month of September.” BASTIEN TARDIEU, JULY 2019 The 2019 growing season was extremely dry. Between April and September, the vineyards of the Rhône valley saw negligible amounts of rain. The little water that fell evaporated before it had even moistened the soil. June 2019 broke heat records. Fortunately, the old vines of Tardieu-Laurent’s patchwork of growers are impressively resilient. As Michel says, they demand respect – “We can but watch and humbly admire this plant which strives to adapt.” At harvest time, the soil water reserves were all but spent. “Barely a few drops” remained… And then, Mother Nature gave a little help. In mid-September, blissful rains came to the rescue, some 20mm. This completely changed the face of the vintage. The vines, stressed by heat and lack of water, relaxed. Under this beneficence, phenolic ripeness was reached. Phew (said those who had not yet picked).

RHÔNE VALLEY, 2019 VINTAGE EN PRIMEUR

2019: THE WINES THE SOUTH In the Southern Rhône, Michel commented that paradoxically (given the hot, dry season), the white wines display beautiful freshness, aromatics and minerality. He described the reds as “built, dense and deep”. A mixture of the 2007 and 2016 vintages – a very exciting place to be…

8

Lots of great wines here – the white Châteauneuf, as always, is a pick and the Châteauneuf Cuvée Spéciale is stunning. Châteauneuf aside, the Rasteau is seriously good this year.

THE NORTH In the Northern Rhône, the wines are very true to their terroirs. Both whites and reds are “noble, precise and harmonious”, as Michel puts it. I have given some unusually high scores to the northern reds this year. Other than the Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage, which are both (predictably?) phenomenal, I urge you to discover the Cornas – the regular bottling, for me, punches way above its weight in 2019.

OLD VINES Several of the Tardieu-Laurent wines are labelled as ‘Vieilles Vignes’, or ‘VV’. While there is no fixed definition of this, Michel and Bastien consider an average of 40 years to be the minimum for a wine to be designated as such.

2019 TASTING NOTES WHITE - SOUTHERN RHÔNE CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE BLANC, LES BECS FINS

VACQUEYRAS BLANC VIEILLES VIGNES

30% Viognier, 30% Grenache Blanc, 15% Roussanne, 15% Marsanne, 10% Clairette. Pithy white peach aromas, with a hint of apricot and vanilla pod. The palate is juicy and pleasingly fleshy. Ripe stone-fruit with a phenolic twist on the finish and a touch of saltiness. Yellow flower aromas from the Viognier. Very appetising. This spent six months in concrete vat, with no oak, before being given a very light filtration, with no fining. 13.5% abv.

This was new to the line-up last year and has been really well received. White grapes represent less than 5% of the plantings in Vacqueras, making this something of a rarity. It comes from Les Garrigues, a clay-heavy soil with limestone gravels. Yellow fruited on the nose, it is gently honeyed, with apricot and green citrus. The palate treads a line between plump and defined, the grippy definition on the salty finish lending it shapely curves. 20% Grenache Blanc, 20% Roussanne, 20% Clairette (which brings a lightness of touch), 15% Viognier (new to the blend this year) and 10% Bourboulenc. 13% abv.

CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE BLANC GUY LOUIS

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE BLANC VIEILLES VIGNES

Guy Louis is a blend of the northern and southern Rhône, which is uncommon. This is a homage to Bastien’s grandfather and great uncle, Guy and Louis respectively. 35% Grenache Blanc (70+ years old), 20% Roussanne, 20% Marsanne, 15% Clairette and 10% Viognier. These declassified cru grapes include a third from CrozesHermitage. 100% barrel fermentation makes this a more corporeal wine than Becs Fins (above). Very food-friendly too, with delectable peach-driven flavours. A little fuller bodied than usual perhaps in 2019. Aged for eight months in new, one- and two-year old barrels. 14% abv.

This comes from three sites around Châteauneuf. 40% Grenache Blanc, 30% Roussanne, 20% Clairette and 10% Bourboulenc, the latter two varieties bringing freshness, with the added benefit of moderating the overall alcohol content. White peach, pepper and cedar on the nose, this is a wine with attitude and I love it for that. Honeysuckle, apricot and a salty granularity on the palate make this a sure bet. The flavours ebb and flow on the long finish – just sit back and savour… Fermented in barrel with eight months lees contact, half of the Roussanne being aged in new oak barrels. 13.5% abv.

RED - SOUTHERN RHÔNE CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE, LES BECS FINS This comes from the big, rounded gallets pebbles of the Gard. It is all destemmed. 70% Grenache (60+ years old) and 30% Syrah (30+ years old). Bright ruby colour in the glass. The nose is really inviting, sweet redcurrant and violet aromas, with a touch of dark pepery spice. The palate is substantial on the attack, with dense blueberry and raspberry fruit, channelled by firm, quite muscular tannins from the mid-palate onwards. Honest and brimming with southern Rhône personality. Aged for a year in concrete tanks, with no fining or filtration. 14% abv. Corney & Barrow Score 17 Recommended drinking from 2022 – 2027 £130/CASE OF 12 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK

CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE, NOBLES ORIGINES This is the wine previously known as Guy Louis. It comes from various southern Rhône villages, including Rasteau, Vacqueras and Beaumes de Venise, with the majority from Lirac, on the western side of the Rhône. 60% Grenache (50+ years old), 20% Syrah (40+ years old, from Rasteau) and 20% Mourvèdre (30-40 years old), all farmed organically. One third whole bunches were used, as usual. Brightly red berried and peppery on the nose. The palate is substantial, the firm grippy tannins providing impressive structure. Give this a couple of years in bottle to meld. Aged for 10 months in one and two year-old barrels, then for eight months in old oak foudres. 14.5% abv. RHÔNE VALLEY, 2019 VINTAGE EN PRIMEUR

CÔTES-DU-RHÔNE CUVÉE SPÉCIALE

RASTEAU VIEILLES VIGNES

Spéciale due to its 100% whole bunch vinification, this comes from 70 year-old vines on the border of the Châteauneuf appellation. A blend of 95% Grenache and 5% ‘others’, referring to the old centre of this vineyard whose assorted varieties are long since forgotten. A lovely sappy nose, spices and spherical raspberry fruit. Herby tension on the palate adds lift to the intense red berry flavours. Lingering pepper and garrigue on the finish. Quite simply brilliant value southern Rhône Grenache. It spends eight months in two and three year-old barrels, then ten months in foudres. 14.5% abv.

70% Grenache (the vines of which are a magnificent 80 years old), 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre (both ‘only’ 40 years old). A third of the grapes were left un-destemmed and fermented as whole bunches. The warmest place in the southern Rhône, Rasteau can also be wonderfully ephemeral, flirtatious even. This has a soaring, herbal nose of thyme and rosemary, with a hint of cedar. The palate is equally deft, the wine really dancing across the tongue. This maintains charm and elegance, no mean feat. Part comes from a site called La Montagne, at 300 metres of elevation. Aged for 12 months in one and two year-old barrels, then for eight months in foudres. 14.5% abv.

VACQUEYRAS VIEILLES VIGNES

GIGONDAS VIEILLES VIGNES

If Rasteau is flirtatious, Vacqueras is usually earthier and more leathered – it is the driest part of the southern Rhône. Half of this wine comes from sandy soils which, in combination with cool aspects, lend a welcome silkiness to the tannins. 60% Grenache (over 60 years old), 35% Mourvèdre and 5% Syrah (both 40 years old). 50% whole bunch fermented. This may be fanciful, but it seems you can feel the parched 2019 summer on the intensely sinewy, fine earthy notes here. The palate is astonishingly precise – clipped – those sandy soils coming into play on the finish, which fleshes out beautifully. This always needs long élevage and bottle ageing. 14.5% abv.

This old vine Gigondas cuvée comes from five plots in Gigondas, at around 400 metres of altitude, from the Dentelles foothills. 90% Grenache, 5% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, ranging from 40 to over 100 years old. 75% whole-bunch fermented. Dark and chocolatey on the nose, leading into a palate of deft violets and pretty raspberry. The tannins are robust and honest, in the best of ways. Brimming with southern Rhône personality. Aged for 10 months in one and two year-old barrels and then 12 months in old oak foudres. 14.5% abv.

BANDOL

“The Bordeaux of the South”, as it is known in the Rhône, this comes from clay-limestone soils. 95% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache, over 50 years old. This is the last red tasted in the Tardieu-Laurent line-up – and there is a reason for that… Glass-staining ruby (almost black!) colour, this is always a big wine. Cassis, blackberry, raisin and dark chocolate on the nose. The palate is textured and gamey, with grippy tannin and a taut balancing acidity. An impressively lusty Mediterranean wine – and that is a compliment! Aged for 24 months in one and two year-old barrels. 14% abv. Corney & Barrow Score 17.5 Recommended drinking from 2026 – 2033 £125/CASE OF 6 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE This comes from five plots in Châteauneuf and is 75% Grenache, 15% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre. The Grenache and Cinsault is 60 to 80 years old, the Syrah 40 years old. Half whole-bunch vinified. An intricate nose of raspberry, blueberry, apple crumble and baked earth. The palate has super fine tannins – we are unmistakeably in Châteauneuf here – which allow the violet and redcurrant flavours to shine. Astonishing freshness from what was a dry, warm summer. 14.5% abv. This over-delivers for its level – a pick. CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE VIEILLES VIGNES

CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE CUVÉE SPÉCIALE

This comes from five old-vine plots. It is 80% Grenache (80-100 years old), 10% Syrah (50 years old) and 10% Mourvèdre (60 years old). A half whole-bunch vinified. The nose is quieter, darker and more brooding, speaking of a substantial wine. The palate, as usual, is a step up in precision, as well as in volume and power. Packed with energy and verve at this very young stage, this is no shrinking violet. Give it time and patience, it will certainly deliver – the red berried texture and fine tannins are all there. Aged for 12 months in one year-old barrels, then for 12 months in foudres. 14.5% abv.

Made from century-old vines at the base of La Crau on sandy soils, this is effectively a Grenache-only Châteauneuf (it contains 1% “other varieties”). 100% whole-bunch fermented. A beautiful, perfumed nose, thanks to those whole bunches, which round out the aromas and bring a tea leaf spice which sits nicely beside the rich raspberry fruit. The palate is cushioned, almost plump in structure, yet deeply, intensely red fruited. This works brilliantly and, as ever, this wine is firmly on my list of recommendations. A year in old oak barrels and then a further year in foudre. 14.5% abv.

WHITE - NORTHERN RHÔNE CROZES-HERMITAGE BLANC VIEILLES VIGNES

CONDRIEU

60% Marsanne, 40% Roussanne, from three different sites, with an average age of over 50 years. Hay, pastry and peach on the nose, leading into a palate of measured fruit ripeness, green citrus and sherbet. This spends 10 months in a combination of new and used barrels, then is very lightly filtered, with no fining. 14% abv.

100% Viognier, from six plots in Condrieu. Peachy and with a sheeny grapiness, this is brightly green-fruited on the nose, with pithy grapefruit – lovely aromatics, as you would hope for from Condrieu. The palate is ingratiatingly soft and supple, the plump, vibrant yellow fruit ripeness buoying the flavours through to a long finish, aided by fresh acidity. Aged for 10 months in new and one year-old barrels. 14% abv.

SAINT-JOSEPH BLANC VIEILLES VIGNES

HERMITAGE BLANC

85% Marsanne, 15% Roussanne, from three different sites, aged 30-40 years. This is a new wine this year. Zesty and orange fruited, with quince and a salty seam, this is a great new addition to the line-up and testament to Michel and Bastien’s experience in sniffing out new talent. Aged for 10 months in a mixture of new and used barrels. 14% abv.

80% Marsanne and 20% Roussanne. The Marsanne is over 50 years old, whilst the Roussanne is over 40 years old. Hay and cedar on the nose, this feels textural and savoury. The palate is riper, with intense yellow hued fruit, honeysuckle and apricot. Power builds throughout the palate, which finishes salty and precise. Bastien calls this “our Montrachet” – and in that vein, this needs patience but WILL be great. Fermented in barrel, then transferred to Stockinger Austrian foudres (which the Tardieus are using more and more). 14% abv.

SAINT-PÉRAY VIEILLES VIGNES Bastien Tardieu calls this “the little Hermitage Blanc”. 50% Marsanne (50-100 years old) and 50% Roussanne (over 40 years old). A wine brimming with personality, this has really ripe peach and apricot fruit and smoky, sauvage notes on the nose. The palate is pastried, with a smoky bacon streak (remember Frazzles?) on the palate. Even more exuberant than usual this year, this is an extroverted wine rooted firmly in the northern Rhône and is a longstanding favourite of C&B customers and staff alike. Aged for 12 months in a mixture of new and one year old barrels. 14% abv. Corney & Barrow Score 17.5 Recommended drinking from 2022 – 2026 £140/CASE OF 6 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK

RED - NORTHERN RHÔNE SAINT-JOSEPH VIEILLES VIGNES 100% Syrah and Serine, Serine being an ancient clone of Syrah, the berries of which are more oval-shaped and less deeply pigmented than Syrah. The former vines are over 60 years old, the latter 100-120 years old! A half whole bunch fermentation. A peppery, flinty nose leads into a wonderfully lifted palate of crystalline blackberry. Violet aromas linger on the finish. Aged for a year in barrel, then eight months in foudre. 13.5% abv. 100% Syrah, from 60 year-old vines. There is one third whole bunch fermentation here. This comes from four sites: Larnage, Battis, Gervans and Habrard. A truly lovely nose of winter berries, ground black pepper, blackcurrant and sous bois. The palate is refreshingly light on its feet, a juiciness and zesty lift allowing the dark fruited aromas to dance. Wonderful. Following fermentation, it is aged for 12 months in new and one year-old barrels, then spends six months in foudres. 13.5% abv. CORNAS Cornas is known as the “vin noir”, and you can see why as soon as you pour it – inky and glass-staining, with a bright purple rim. 100% Syrah/Serine, 60 to 100 years old. This wine was previously known as ‘Cornas Coteaux’. It comes from three plots. A half whole bunch fermentation. If the nose was a rugby player, it would be a prop forward – powerful and meaty, with smoky bacon aromas. Not without refinement, mind you. The luxurious palate revels in zingingly ripe raspberry and blackcurrant. There is so much intensity here, a thrilling wine and a firm recommendation. CORNAS VIEILLES VIGNES If Côte-Rotie and Hermitage are the go-to northern Rhône appellations, Cornas is the insider’s choice. 100% Serine/Syrah, ranging from 80 to over 100 years old. 25% whole bunch fermented. This comes from midslope plots of Les Eygats and Patou. Coiled and brooding on the nose, intense blackcurrant and liquorice aromas emerging with time in the glass. The palate is intensely, sweetly red fruited, the firm tannins equally firmly fruitcoated. Full-on at this early stage but this deserves patience and will no doubt find its balance. Aged for 24 months in new and one year-old barrels. Corney & Barrow Score 17.5+ Recommended drinking from 2026 – 2036 £295/CASE OF 6 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK

CÔTE-RÔTIE VIEILLES VIGNES

All from the Côte Brune, this is now the third vintage of this wine, which was introduced thanks to a new supplier with vines in the prime vineyards of Landonne (in the oldest part), Lancement and Chavaroche. The vines here are 60-70 years old on average. 100% whole bunch vinified. The aromas here really scream Côte-Rotie – fine blackberry fruit lifted by orange zest and spices, white pepper and tangerine – cool and precise, delicate. The palate continues in this vein, with fine, firm tannins adding substance and contributing to the sensation of a crescendo of power from the mid-palate to the finish. Bravo Michel and Bastien, what a wine! 13.5% abv. Corney & Barrow Score 19 Recommended drinking from 2030 – 2042 £295/CASE OF 6 BOTTLES, IN BOND UK £305/CASE OF 3 MAGNUMS, IN BOND UK

Intense tea leaf spice on the nose, with blackberry, pepper and cedar. The palate is disarmingly fine and nuanced, with blackberry, savoury spice, undergrowth and bitter chocolate. The multifaceted flavour profile is given full rein by supple, fine tannins and a fresh backbone of acidity. Aged for a year in new and one year-old barrels, then spends another year in foudres.
