DOMAINE COMTE GEORGES DE VOGÜÉ 2022 VINTAGE

“Balanced,

juicy and sappy,

[the 2022s] seduce with their vitality, energy, elegance, and remarkable persistence.”

JEAN-LUC PÉPIN, FEBRUARY 2024

2022 is the second full vintage of winemaker Jean Lupatelli. His considered, respectful probing and reassessing continues. Grapes are now picked into small crates to avoid damage to the skins. The domaine was the first to pick its Musigny vines in 2022, with seven separate cuvées vinified, each from a different plot.

In the cellar, the fermentation tanks are now filled by gravity rather than by pumping. In 2022, around 50% whole clusters were used. Bottling started earlier than usual: Chambolle-Musigny, BonnesMares and Musigny Blanc were bottled at the beginning of November, with the 1er Cru, Amoureuses and Musigny at the end of January.

Established in 1450, the domaine is owned today by Comtesse Claire de Causans and Marie de Ladoucette, descendants of the late Comte Georges, who died in 1987. Working alongside Jean Lupatelli are the longstanding and highly effective team of Éric Bourgogne (Vineyard Manager) and Jean-Luc Pépin (Commercial Director).

The domaine owns around two thirds of the Musigny vineyard, binding inextricably the names Comte Georges de Vogüé and Musigny. Its other grand cru is Bonnes Mares, at the northern end of the village, beside Clos de Tart.

We are proud to represent Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé exclusively in the UK, and to have done so since the 2003 vintage.

HISTORY

In the 15th century, Jean Moisson, a wealthy Burgundian, began to acquire vineyards and started construction of the current domaine buildings, as well as the nearby church of Chambolle-Musigny.

Several artworks in the church depict members of the Moisson family, ancestors of Comte Georges de Vogüé.

The Vogüé name was first recorded in Burgundy in 1766, when Catherine Bouhier de Versalieu married Cerice François Melchior de Vogüé, originally from the Ardèche, where there is still a commune named Vogüé.

Keeping the domaine in family ownership throughout the French Revolution of 1789 cannot have been easy. Certainly, the domaine stands out as one of the few which managed this.

THE DOMAINE TODAY

In 1925, Comte Georges de Vogüé inherited the vineyards from his father Comte Arthur de Vogüé. The domaine has been known as Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé ever since.

Comte Georges’ daughter, Elizabeth de Vogüé, married Baron Bertrand de Ladoucette. The couple had two daughters, Claire and Marie de Ladoucette, who are the current owners of the domaine.

Comte Georges de Vogüé died in 1987. In 2002, Claire and Marie de Ladoucette, following the death of their mother, inherited the vineyards and became comanagers of the domaine.

Commercial Director Jean-Luc Pépin has been at the domaine since 1988 and Vineyard Manager Eric Bourgogne since 1996. In spring 2021, Jean Lupatelli replaced François Millet as Winemaker.

THE 2022 VINTAGE AT DOMAINE COMTE GEORGES DE VOGÜÉ

Our customary thanks to Sales & Marketing Director Jean-Luc Pépin for the following overview of the growing season at the domaine.

January 2022 got off to an extremely mild start and saw normal temperatures settling in for the winter season, with freezing fog and low precipitation subsequently. February was mostly mild with spring-like daytime temperatures and a lack of rain. April-like mildness with low rainfall continued right up to 29th March, when temperatures dropped significantly.

April started with temperatures close to freezing. A forecast heavy frost prompted us to light candles in some vineyards. Fortunately, the drying of the air mass thanks to a north wind during the nights of 3rd and 4th April helped, despite negative temperatures, to greatly reduce the damage to the buds.

A second period of frost hit Burgundy on 9th and 10th April, on wetter soils. Fortunately, the temperature fell slightly below zero and there was no damage. Budburst began on 11th April, reaching its peak at mid-month. Spring-like temperatures and similar rainfall to previous months settled in from mid-April.

May started as April ended and the temperatures, over the weeks, became summery. Flowering, which started in mid-May, reached its peak on 23rd May. The month was particularly dry.

The summer heat of May continued into June. However, unlike previous months, June benefited from a succession of stormy periods, bringing a cumulative rainfall of 175mm. The bunch closure stage was reached on 20th June.

This water supply allowed the vines to avoid the hydric stress that they could have experienced during the particularly hot and dry months of July and August. Véraison (colour change) started on 11th July, with midvéraison reached on 25th July.

At the end of August, the leaves remained green, the vines continuing to access water reserves. The health of the vines was impeccable. When tasting the berries on 24th August, we noticed a nice sweetness, the juices being perfumed with varietal aromas.

As in 2017, following the 2016 April frost, nature in 2022 sought to generously compensate the enormous losses inflicted in 2021 by the April frost, through a strong release of buds. The control of yields was therefore a prerequisite for producing quality wines in this 2022 vintage. Vine trimming and green harvesting helped the vines reach a state of beautiful maturity at the end of August.

We harvested from 30th August to 6th September, under a warm sun, bringing in impeccable grapes that required very little sorting.

2022 VINTAGE TASTING NOTES

MUSIGNY BLANC GRAND CRU

The only white grand cru of the Côte de Nuits, the domaine’s Musigny Blanc is made from 0.65 hectares of 25-year-old Chardonnay vines. Aromas of pear skin, white peach and pastry. The palate is crisp and nervy, chalky-mineral and clipped on the entry, opening to reveal a mid-palate of crunchy stone-fruit with building richness. White flowers, pastry and fine mineral grip on the finish. Bottled at the end of October 2023, just before our visit. The score may therefore be conservative.

£990/Case of 1 bottle, in bond UK

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY

Although this is a village wine, part of it comes from two premier cru vineyards – Les Baudes (0.13 hectares) and Les Fuées (0.15ha) – plus 1.8ha of village vines, in Les Jutruots, La Taupe and Les Porlottes (which accounts for the majority, around 85%). These last three are clustered together, to the south of the village. Dark, peppery aromas, leading into a palate of pure, crunchy dark berry fruit, with bright, crystalline raspberry flavours. Strident and rather thrillingly powerful, excellent. 50% wholebunch fermentation. Around a third new oak. In its peer group, this is a standout.

Corney & Barrow Score 18+

£480/Case of 1 magnum, in bond UK

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1ER CRU

The domaine’s Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru is made entirely from the young vines (25 years old) of Musigny Grand Cru. Absent last year due to the tiny 2021 crop, it is great to have it back. However, the quantity made continues to shrink, as the vines mature and are included in the Musigny VV. The equivalent of 122 dozen-bottle cases has been made… Beautiful red berry aromas, pure and supple. Pretty rose petal perfume rises from the palate, on which fine, chalky tannins frame silky raspberry fruit, with deft stony-mineral definition. Effortless, pulling away into the air. 50% whole-bunch fermentation. Around a third new oak.

Corney & Barrow Score 18

Recommended drinking from 2028 – 2040

£1,025/Case of 3 bottles, in bond UK

CHAMBOLLE-MUSIGNY 1ER CRU LES AMOUREUSES

The domaine owns two sub-plots of Amoureuses, totalling 0.56 hectares, of which nearly half (0.27ha) was uprooted in spring 2022 for replanting. The largest parcel (planted 1964) is below Musigny, at the southern end of this nearly pure-limestone vineyard. The smaller (planted 1974) plot lies to the north. The berries from both tend to be very small, making for a textural style, complemented by the classic chalky minerality of Amoureuses. Crystalline raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, with rose petal aromas. The palate is nervy and tensile, still very compressed and discreet, with a filigreefine limestone grip on the finish. Wonderful. 50% wholebunch fermentation. Around a third new oak.

BONNES-MARES GRAND CRU

These 2.66 hectares of 44-year-old-vines are planted on old, decomposed limestone. The topsoil has a red hue, thanks to a rich mix of clay and iron. Winemaker Jean Lupatelli prefers to show this immediately after the Chambolle village, grouping the more powerful, clayheavy styles together. In this sense, Bonnes-Mares is an outlier at the northern end of the appellation, beside Clos de Tart. Dark, foresty purple fruits, as is typical here, with an added red-fruited Chambolle aromatic charm this year. The powerful, chalky tannins also have a newfound delicacy. For the first time in 2022, Jean vinified the northern, middle and southern vines separately. 50% whole-bunch fermentation. Around a third new oak.

MUSIGNY VIEILLES VIGNES GRAND CRU

The domaine owns 7.12 hectares of Musigny’s total 10.85ha, with a variety of terroir nuances. In recognition of this complexity, Jean Lupatelli now makes seven Musigny cuvées, each from a separate plot. We tasted from various barrels, starting with the northern side of Les Petits Musigny, which offered supple, succulent red berries, with fresh acids and mineral energy. A plot known as Les 13 ouvrées showed the more densely concentrated side of Musigny, with sweet fruits and quite stark chalkiness. A plot at the bottom of the slope was darker and peppery, nervy and with that Amoureuses-style magic of intensity coupled with weightlessness. Although we are yet to see the finished blend, it is not too much of a leap of imagination to say that this is a very special Musigny and one which could rival some of the greats. The average vine age is now 46 years, as increasing proportions of the Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru plots are integrated. The final blend will average out at around 50% wholebunch fermentation.

Tasting Guide

Our tasting notes provide full details but, at your request, we have also introduced a clear and simple marking system. We hope these guidelines assist you in your selection. For the benefit of simplicity, wines are scored out of 20. We will often use a range of scores (e.g. 16.5 to 17) to indicate the potential to achieve a higher mark. When a ‘+’ is shown it adds further to that potential. Wines from lesser vintages will, inevitably, show a lower overall score.

Wines are judged, in a very broad sense, against their peers. Why? Well, you cannot easily compare a Ford with an Aston Martin, other than they are both cars and have wheels. It is not that different with wine. A score is a summary only. The devil is in the detail, so please focus on the tasting notes and, as always, speak to our sales team.

12

THE ALLOCATION PROCESS

We are often asked by customers for guidance on the quantities they should order.

All of the domaine’s wines are allocated. Our suggestion is that you simply order what you would ideally like to receive. To order, please call or email your usual sales contact.

• The domaine’s and Corney & Barrow’s focus is on the private customer and as a consumer rather than a speculator.

• The domaine’s wines are bought on the clear understanding that they will be stored and delivered in the UK only.

• Should you wish to sell the wine in the future, do please offer Corney & Barrow first refusal as this will ensure the integrity of secondary market distribution, something which is of great concern to the domaine.

• Priority will be given to the domaine’s and Corney & Barrow’s best, most loyal and most regular customers.

• We will do our best to accommodate newer customers. To help in this, we have a range of older vintages in stock to help begin a collection.

• May we please have your order by Thursday 21st March 2024.

• Allocations will be completed by Thursday 28th March 2024. Confirmation of order will be through receipt of invoice and the wines will be delivered or put into your reserve on payment.

• As outlined, all orders are conditional upon UK storage only.

• May we please request that invoices are paid in full by Thursday 25th April 2024. In all fairness, we reserve the right to re-allocate your order to other customers on the waiting list if payment is not received by this time.

• Do please speak to our sales team, who will be delighted to help you further.
