The Dugat family have been growers in Burgundy’s Gevrey-Chambertin since the early 17th century. Loїc Dugat, pictured here with Adam Brett-Smith, is the 13th generation.
AFTER THE FROST, THE SUNSHINE
Having embarked on our new role as exclusive UK agent for Domaine Dugat-Py in last year’s tiny 2021 vintage, we are delighted to have a larger crop on our hands in 2022.
Well, it’s ‘larger’ but hardly ‘large’. With over 30 wines from just 15 hectares, the wines will inevitably be in short supply. However, the 2022 vintage also marks the launch of a new project, Dugat-Py Vinificateur, which sees Loїc Dugat realise a longstanding ambition to vinify some of the great white wine terroirs of the Côte de Beaune.
The domaine’s 15 hectares of vines include four of the great grands crus of the village: Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin. Several wines are labelled “Très Vieilles Vignes”, in recognition of the estate’s particularly old vines, some of which are well over a century old. The average vine age across the estate is over 70 years.
Dugat-Py is based in the historic centre of Gevrey-Chambertin, at the foot of the Combe de Lavaux. Ageing of the wines takes place in the stunning vaulted 11th and 12th century cellars beneath the domaine.
Even more noteworthy than the family’s history in the village are Loïc’s recent initiatives in the vineyard and cellar. From the 2018 vintage, the high-trellised tressage system of vine training has been gradually adopted across the estate. Loїc says this has dramatically changed the tannic profile of the wines. He also picks earlier than his father did.
In the cellar, Loїc has quietly introduced vinification in amphora for several cuvées. Diam 30 corks have been used for white wines since 2019, with natural cork for the reds. The domaine has been organic since 2003 and follows the lunar calendar, both in the vineyards and the cellar.
These incremental improvements are making for some of the most exciting wines in Gevrey today. We remain thrilled and honoured to play a part in this new Dugat-Py chapter. Demand will be high so please let us know what you would ideally like and we will do our best.
GUY SEDDON, HEAD OF FINE WINE BUYING MARCH 2024A TIMELINE OF DOMAINE DUGAT-PY
1645: Birth of Hugues Bollenot, son of Étienne Bollenot, vigneron in Gevrey-Chambertin.
1923: Marriage of Fernand Dugat and Jeanne Bolnot, resulting in the creation of Domaine Dugat.
1972: Pierre and Michèle Dugat, parents of Bernard Dugat, win the Tasse d'Or, awarded by Alexis Lichine for the best 1972 red grand cru, with their Charmes-Chambertin.
1975: First vinification of Bernard Dugat. The domaine begins to expand.
1994: Creation of the name Domaine Dugat-Py, appending the maiden name of Bernard’s wife.
1996: Loïc joins the estate while studying at university and doing internships.
1999: First year of conversion to organic viticulture in Chambertin and Gevrey-Chambertin Cuvée Coeur de Roy.
2003: Conversion of the whole estate to organic viticulture. Acquisition of two plots in Côte de Beaune, Pommard and Meursault Blanc.
2004: Renovation and creation of new cellars. Acquisition of a Chassagne-Montrachet Blanc 1er Cru Morgeot parcel.
2005: Purchase of 50% of the domaine by Loïc Dugat. Loïc makes various wines solo for the first time.
2006: Horses introduced for ploughing in various plots: Chambertin, Mazis-Chambertin, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny and Les Évocelles.
2009: Acquisition of new parcel of Gevrey-Chambertin Les Évocelles.
2011: Two new parcels on the hill of Corton: Corton-Charlemagne and Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétille.
2013: Three Gevrey-Chambertin premier crus made separately for the first time: Fonteny, Les Corbeaux and La Perrière.

THE VINEYARDS
“The point of working with old vines is having a concentration and natural quality of wine.”
LOÏC DUGAT
Domaine Dugat-Py's holdings are blessed with particularly old vines, many of which are over 100 years old. The oldest vines of the estate were planted in 1905.
The domaine has 15 hectares, spread over more than 20 appellations, from which over 30 wines are made. The aim, as Loїc puts it, is “to obtain the quintessence of each terroir.”
The roots of the old vines reach 5-10 meters deep, contributing to the marked differences in terroir expression from plot to plot. Soils are cultivated to enable deep rooting. In 2018, Loїc began to convert four parcels (grands and premiers crus) to the tressage method whereby untrimmed vines are ‘arched’, so as to encourage root growth and energy flow.
By raising the height of the trellis to 2.2m, using six wires in total, it is possible to ‘braid’ the long vine canes back into
the canopy. Loïc explained that tressage causes less stress to the vines and has totally changed his wines' tannins
The domaine embarked on its first organic trials 20 years ago. Loїc stresses that it has always been obvious to him that “nature must be preserved” – an approach which also happens to result in the best quality wine. The team follows the lunar cycle for vineyard work and cellar operations, “as our ancestors did”, as well as using biodynamic preparations.
Two hectares are now ploughed by horse – including, as Adam and I saw when we visited in summer 2022, in the steep Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Sous Frétille. Loїc harvests significantly earlier than his father. The domaine has been among the first to start picking in recent vintages.
THE HOLDINGS
With over 30 wines from more than 20 appellations, we thought a table might be useful…
RED WINES
THE CELLAR
The historic Dugat-Py cellars are the only remaining part of a 9th century abbey called the Aumônerie. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, they are, according to Loїc Dugat, Burgundy’s oldest.
The abbey itself belonged to the St-Bénigne order in Dijon. Aumônier (Abbot) Halinard was responsible for its construction, at the foot of Gevrey-Chambertin’s Combe de Lavaux.
Of particular note are the Aumônerie’s gothic vaults and Byzantine style. Its six-metre height is extraordinary, lending a quasi-religious character. Indeed, in its early years, it would have been the monks who tended to both the vineyards and the cellar.
The cellar contains bottles made by Loїc’s father, grandfather and great-grandfather. All vintages since 1950 are represented, as well as some even older bottles. This large area of natural cellar space, with no need for air conditioning, is a rare luxury in the region.
Cellarage and ageing is clearly close to Loїc’s heart. He stresses, “the great terroirs only wake up after 5-10 years in bottle.” Élevage tends to be between 13 and 20 months.
Loïc has reduced the percentage of new oak. His father Bernard tended to use 100% new oak for all premiers and grands crus, and sometimes for communal appellations too. The Petite Chapelle 1er Cru now sees around 50% new oak, and the Vosne-Romanée just 30%. Loïc has also refined his selection of forests, seasoning and toast. The domaine’s cooper is François Frères.
Since 2018, Loïc has aged the premiers crus, other than Petite Chapelle, in Italian terracotta amphorae. This change was made without fanfare – as Loïc says, “I do things and only talk about them 5-10 years later.”
RED WINES
REGIONAL
BOURGOGNE ROUGE
The domaine’s Bourgogne Rouge comes from 5-6 parcels, totalling around a hectare. The average vine age is 35 years. Fine raspberry fruit aromas lead into a supple and sucrose-laden palate, immediate and pure, framed by fine, barely-there tannins.

BOURGOGNE HALINARD
These vines, in Gevrey-Chambertin, are voluntarily declassified to Bourgogne Rouge. They range from 25 to 75 years old and have been certified organic since 2003. Spicy, peppery and sappy aromas lead into a cool, focused palate of dark berries. The old vine component here makes for a wine of greater richness and substance. This spends 12-18 months in oak barrels, 10% new.

CÔTE DE BEAUNE
BEAUNE LES BEAUX FOUGETS TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
Les Beaux Fougets is a village lieu-dit in the south of the Beaune appellation, a stone’s throw from the border of Pommard. The domaine’s holding is a tiny 0.26 hectares, close to Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots, planted with 55-year-old vines. This previously formed part of Domaine Newmann. Dark, sappy and sweet spices, this is demonstrative and quite lush on the palate. The tannins are firm and structured, suggesting good ageing potential.

CHOREY-LÈS-BEAUNE TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
2017 was the first vintage of this wine. Chorey lies to the north of the city of Beaune, before you get to the hill of Corton. Over 90-year-old vines, planted on less than 0.3 hectares. Intense dark forest fruit aromas, pure and bright, with notes of liquorice and black pepper. The palate is full of fine extract yet remains light on its feet, framed by chalky, gently grippy tannins. Four barrels were made.

MONTHÉLIE TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
2019 was the first year of the Dugat-Py's Monthélie, making this only the fourth vintage. The domaine has just over a hectare here; the average vine age is over 70 years. This formed part of the former Domaine Newmann previously, several of whose holdings were acquired by Domaine Dugat-Py. A dark, spicy nose opens onto a cool, focused palate of blackberries and bitter cherries.

POMMARD LA LEVRIÈRE TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
La Levrière is beside the Château de Pommard and this is a particularly aromatic style of Pommard. Over 70 year-old vines. 2003 was the first vintage – this wine and the Meursault were the first from the Côte de Beaune in the domaine’s line-up. Brightly red-berried on the nose, this has intense wild raspberry fruit and a touch of sappy spice. The palate is cool and focused, super-refined and with a super intensity of fruit. In Adam’s words, “God that’s good.”

POMMARD LES VAUMURIENSHAUTS TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
Les Vaumuriens-Hauts is at the top of the slope, close to the woods above the village of Pommard. This previously formed part of the former Domaine Newmann. Brightly red-berried, sappy aromas – exotic and soaring. The palate is lithe and vibrant, the wholebunch spices working with the upbeat raspberry fruit to stunning effect. For me, there is an extra notch of energy here. Vinified in a 10hl concrete dolium.

BEAUNE 1ER CRU CLOS DES AVAUX VIEILLES VIGNES
A short stroll from the centre of Beaune, Clos des Avaux sits in the centre of the swathe of Beaune premiers crus, just beneath 1er Cru Champ Pimont. The domaine has half a hectare here, of 45-year-old vines. Sweet spice and menthol aromas. The palate is sappy and fine, driving and pure, with a fabulous energy and linearity.

ALOXE-CORTON LES PAULANDS VIEILLES VIGNES
2022 is the first vintage of this wine. This 0.33 hectare plot was acquired by Loïc Dugat at the same time as his Puligny-Montrachet Champs Gain. These are 70-year-old vines. Dark berry sous bois aromas lead into a palate of sweet blackberry and forest fruit, with a firm tannic underpinning. An impressive wine which, as Loïc says, needs some patience.

BEAUNE 1ER CRU LES GRÈVES TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
Grèves is considered by many to be the greatest site in Beaune. This holding also came from the former Domaine Newmann and, as Loïc says, was the prize in many ways. These are 60-year-old vines. A soaring nose, of dark, sucrose- and spice-laden berries, the pretty and refined aromas aiming at the sky rather than the earth, offering a glimpse of the ethereal. The darkly-fruited palate is rich and potent, framed by chalky tannins, suggesting a long life ahead.

CÔTE DE NUITS
FIXIN CLOS DE FIXEY MONOPOLE
Clos de Fixey is a 0.29 hectare walled vineyard, planted with 45-year-old vines, on the slopes above the Route des Grands Crus. The domaine being the sole owner, it is a monopole. Due to the stage of élevage when we visited, this was not available for tasting.

VOSNE-ROMANÉE TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
This is the domaine’s only wine from Vosne-Romanée and, although a village-level, it is labelled “Très Vieilles Vignes” to reflect the 80-year-old average vine age. It also comes from highly esteemed plots. Half is from Quartier de Nuits – a village climat wedged between Grands Échézeaux, Suchots and Clos de Vougeot – and half from Les Violettes, just beside Échézeaux. Sweet, sappy spices, fresh mint and incense. The palate is kaleidoscopically pretty, offering rose petals and raspberries alongside a dark espresso bean richness, framed by fine, supple tannins.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN VIEILLES VIGNES
The Gevrey VV and the following wine, Coeur de Roy, are in a sense, the heart of the domaine. Whilst certainly not plentiful, they are less tiny (3-4,000 bottles per year).
This Vieilles Vignes cuvée is made from 1.3 hectares of 30-50-year-old vines, from at least 10 parcels. A refined, classical Gevrey of raspberry and blackberry fruit, lifted by lively acidity and framed by supple tannins. Approachable and engaging.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN COEUR DE ROY TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
Named after the family who previously owned the vineyards around the domaine, Coeur de Roy is made from vines aged between 50 and 115 years old. It is a selection from four plots, spread over three hectares and is the largest volume cuvée at the estate. A dark peppery nose, with fine raspberry aromas. The palate is intense and finely structured, the saturated dark berry fruit framed by rather majestic chalky tannins. A strident, potent wine, and an archetype of Gevrey. A wine of “grace”, as Loïc called it.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN LES ÉVOCELLES TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
Évocelles, although a village vineyard, is the continuation of the line of premiers crus that runs from Clos SaintJacques to Cazetiers and on to Champeaux. Loïc described it as “one of the greatest lieux-dits of GevreyChambertin.” The domaine has three quarters of a hectare of 65-year-old vines here. A dark, spicy, sultry nose – how can you not love this…? The palate is sensual and inviting, so pure, almost evaporating in the mouth, aided by silky, fine tannins. Eight barrels were made in 2022. Cropped at a low yield of 20hl/ha, due to the 2022 heat and the old vines.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 1ER CRU LA PERRIÈRE TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
La Perrière lies downslope from Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru, on the other side of the Route des Grands Crus. This is a tiny plot of 0.08 hectares of 60-year-old vines. Bright raspberry and wild strawberry aromas, with intense whole-bunch sappy spices. The palate is fine and driving, with a clipped, chalky-mineral base, over which the exotic aromatics soar. Only two barrels have been made.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 1ER CRU CORBEAUX TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
Corbeaux is directly beside the great grand cru MazisChambertin. There are two small parcels here, the oldest vines of which are 90 years old. Pure raspberry and dark berry fruit, with chalky mineral aromas. The full-bodied palate is fine and direct, with bloody/iodine notes and a linear, energetic drive.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 1ER CRU PETITE CHAPELLE TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
The domaine’s vines in 1er Cru Petite Chapelle are only 500m from Charmes-Chambertin. The oldest vines here are almost 90 years old. Dark, spicy aromas and refined, polished blackberries, this was initially rather shy, needing coaxing out of the glass. A hint of liquorice and bitter chocolate. The palate is fine, focused, pure and rich – dark berries and a phenomenal concentration and drive. I can’t recall who said it but I jotted down the following, in case of use: “The Chambolle of Gevrey –sexy.” I suspect it will be wonderful.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 1ER CRU LAVAUX ST-JACQUES VIEILLES VIGNES
The domaine’s tiny 0.14 hectare holding here comprises two south-facing parcels, 100 metres apart. The vines are between 45 and 65 years old. As Loïc described it, it is a wine “of grand cru quality, defined by the combe” – the Combe Lavaux side valley which brings cooling breezes from the hills. Fine, delicate aromas of dark berries, tea leaves and sweet sappy spices. The palate is both exotic and refined, revelling in its sappy, cool dark berry fruit and chalky definition, finishing with a vapour trail of fine dark perfume.

GEVREY-CHAMBERTIN 1ER CRU FONTENY TRÈS VIEILLES VIGNES
Fonteny is just above Mazis- and beside RuchottesChambertin. It is a warm site, nestled in a dip in the slope where the line of great Gevrey grands crus meets the Combe Lavaux side valley. The domaine has a miniscule 0.09 hectares here, whose vines were between 57 and 81 years old in 2022. The planting density is 15,000 vines per hectare. Dark, sappy spices, very refined. The palate opens cool and focused, revealing a more substantial presence on the mid-palate, with a seam of exotic spicy sap bringing together the pure, dark berry flavours.

CHARMES-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU
The domaine has 0.47 hectares in Charmes-Chambertin. The vines here are over 70 years old. Last year, Loïc introduced the 2021 as “un vin discret”. This year, it is more expressive at this early stage, in line with the reputation of this joyful grand cru vineyard. Fine raspberry, cherry and crushed rock aromas, with rose petal perfume and sappy spices. You have to work a little at the palate but it reveals cool berry fruit and disarmingly pretty roses. A wine of hidden depths embarking on a long ageing journey.

MAZOYÈRES-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU
The stony Mazoyères, with its prominent minerality, is the yin to Charmes-Chambertin’s yang. The two holdings are separated by just 100 metres. The domaine has 0.23 hectares here. Loïc has reflected on the style of his Mazoyères, introducing more whole-bunch fermentation and decreasing the amount of new oak. The former is immediately apparent in the elegantly spiced, darkly berried nose. The sappy palate has a sort of centripetal force, pulling the expressive dark fruit flavours towards its centre. Driving, fine and linear, with polished, refined tannins. This was picked early, on 26th August.

MAZIS-CHAMBERTIN GRAND CRU
This tiny 0.22 hectare plot of 70 year-old vines, planted at 15,000 plants per hectare, was one of the first vineyards to which Loïc Dugat took us when we first visited the domaine. I have a feeling it is particularly close to his heart. He described the wine as aérien – that wonderful French word which is almost impossible to translate (ethereal, soaring, airborne…) Dark and reductive when tasted in November 2023, beneath which hovered a nose of stony minerality and orange zest. The palate is driving and chalky-fine, compressed and clenched, with nervy, thrilling tannins pulling you towards its centre. As Loïc said, “c’est à part” – in a league of its own…

WHITE WINES
BOURGOGNE BLANC
The domaine’s Bourgogne Blanc was the surprise hit of our launch dinner last year. For a humble Bourgogne and a young vines cuvée by Dugat-Py standards (just 20-year-old vines), this over-delivers massively. It comes from two parcels – one in Gevrey-Chambertin and the other in Puligny-Montrachet, so is an intriguing blend of the two Côtes. As in 2021, this punches way above its weight, offering white flowers and peaches, with a clipped salty minerality.

BOURGOGNE HAUTES-CÔTES DE NUITS
This comes from Chavanne, in the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits. Unusually, the vines here are planted at a high density of 12,000 plants per hectare. White flowers and peppery, chalky-mineral aromas lead into a substantial palate of fleshy stone fruit, lifted by juicy acidity.

PERNAND-VERGELESSES 1ER CRU SOUS FRÉTILLE
Sous Frétille, made at the domaine since 2011, is a steeply sloping premier cru overlooking the village of PernandVergelesses and opposite the En Charlemagne lieuxdits of Corton-Charlemagne. We visited when it was being ploughed by horse in summer 2022, which really underscored the gradient. DUGAT-PY VINIFICATEUR
This is a working title for Dugat-Py’s new Côte de Beaune white wine négociant project, which we are getting an exciting first glimpse of in the 2022 vintage.
Although the domaine holdings already include some top grand and premier cru Chardonnay sites, including Corton-Charlemagne, Puligny-Montrachet’s Champs Gain and Chassagne-Montrachet’s Morgeot, the ability to make premier cru Meursault (Charmes, Poruzots, Blagny) and to expand the offering in Puligny to Perrières and Referts is a dream come true for Loïc.
This important new string to the Dugat-Py bow is the result of years of planning. Loïc is paying top dollar for these grapes, which he is only able to source thanks to longstanding relationships throughout the Côte. The Dugat-Py vineyard team has boots on the ground in all of these plots. Stay tuned for the 2023 vintage, which will see the addition of Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru.
SAVIGNY LES BEAUNE BLANC LES VERMOTS

Les Poruzots is wonderfully sited, at mid-slope. Its premier cru neighbours are Genevrières to the south and Les Gouttes d’Or to the north. Ample and inviting aromas of white peach fruit and warm pastry open onto a nicely weighted palate of measured stone fruit and pear. Highly classical. Just four barrels have been made.

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU LES CHARMES
One of the great premiers crus of Meursault, Charmes is a large mid-slope vineyard in the south of the appellation, surrounded by Puligny-Montrachet’s Combettes and Referts, and Meursault’s Perrières and Genevrières. Aromas of white peach, with friable and delicate sea shell minerality. The palate is pure and open, bright and welcoming. A brilliant example of what Loïc’s new project is capable of.

MEURSAULT 1ER CRU SOUS BLAGNY
This is from the curious hinterland above Meursault Perrières where Chardonnay and Pinot Noir are both found. Sous Blagny sits in the same climat, and directly adjacent to, the lieux-dits Sous le Dos d’Ane (as made by Domaine Leflaive) and La Pièce sous le Bois (made by the Matrot family, in Pinot Noir). A wine of white peaches and pears, fine stony minerality and tantalising glimpses of richness and exoticism.

PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU LES PERRIÈRES
Puligny’s Les Perrières is just to the south of premiers crus Combettes and Referts. The domaine team worked this plot and picked the grapes. Aromas of white flowers, citrus zest and pear fruit. The palate is clipped and fine, treading a line between succulent and precise – there is a tantalising sense of restrained power, just biding its time. Some patience required but this will be great. Just one barrel was made.

PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU LES REFERTS
Just downslope from Combettes, in the north of Puligny appellation, I always think Referts deserves a higher profile. The domaine team worked this plot and picked the grapes. A super example of the rapier-like Puligny style, this is clipped and racy, stony-mineral and high acid, with white flower perfume and pitch-perfect pear and peach fruit. Seven barrels have been made.

PULIGNY-MONTRACHET 1ER CRU LA GARENNE
La Garenne runs beside, and slightly upslope from, 1er Cru Champs Gain. To the south, it touches Saint-Aubin's Murgers des Dents de Chien. One of the few wines we were not able to taste on our visit in November 2023.
