Henley Lash House Eyelash Extension Specialists Anna Cornfield, owner of Henley Lash House, has been in the beauty industry for 15 years and has perfected her lash treatment technique over the last five years. Specialising in Russian Volume eyelash extensions, Anna is an expert technician in semi-permanent lashes, achieving fantastic results for all clients. What are Russian Volume lashes? Designed to give the ‘wow-factor’, Russian Volume lashes are applied to match the natural curvature of the eyelid. Their ultra-fine, lightweight design allows technicians to apply multiple synthetic extensions to each natural lash, creating more volume than classic lashes and often lasting longer. How are they applied? Anna carefully applies individual extension fibres to a single natural eyelash, building up both volume and length in the process. Depending upon her clients’ desired outcome, Anna can apply two to eight extensions on a single natural lash. The Russian Volume lashes are applied in a ‘fan-like’ shape, giving an eyecatching, impactful look. Are Russian Volume lashes safe? It’s important to book a specialist technician for all eyelash extensions. Eyelash extensions can only damage your natural lashes if applied incorrectly. Untrained, amateur technicians may not have the skills and equipment to correctly isolate individual natural lashes and safely apply extensions. When it comes to your beauty and health, always go professional. Anna guarantees all clients are given aftercare advice and receive patch tests before any appointments take place.

Monthly Hair Care Column

With Celebrity Hair Stylist

Jay Birmingham I cannot believe we are into not only a new year but also a new decade! I love this time of the year because, whilst I don’t believe a new year is a new chapter as such, it is a great time to reflect on the past year you have had and look at what you have achieved and what you’d like to achieve in the year to come. My schedule is always crazy busy so it isn’t often I get time to sit and reflect or even just to spend time with family which is why I love the Christmas period so much. With that being said, I do really look forward to January too as it does feel like a bit of a fresh start to set yourself new goals and head into the new year feeling good. I am so excited for 2020! I will be opening my second salon which I am really looking forward to as it will be much bigger than my first salon and I will be creating my own team of amazing stylists to make sure I can fit in all my clients and create a gorgeous space. During 2019 I worked with lots of amazing celebrities and I loved being part of their campaigns and projects. This is something I am super excited to continue in 2020 and as always, I will be sure to bring you guys along for the ride with me so watch this space! Following December your hair can feel lack lustre and dehydrated just like your skin. This is because our lifestyle and diet impact our hair just as it does our skin. Classic new year detoxes may seem a little cliché but I really do recommend them for your health all round and especially your hair. To help boost your hair back to its vibrant self in no time, treat yourself to regular at home moisturising treatments and visit your hairdresser for a freshen up trim if possible. And of course, remember to drink lots of water! Here’s to a new year, a new decade and new goals to smash!

How to beat

the winter blues

Christmas has been and gone and for many of us we have experienced a fun fuelled December calendar, with endless festivities, however for some of us Christmas can be a lonely and sad time of year for various different reasons and this often can catapult those of us experiencing this, into the lowest of times as we enter a brand new year. Many of us enter the New Year feeling positive, it’s a time for new beginnings, the next chapter and its time to get ticking off those resolutions, but unfortunately, for many of us this couldn’t be further from the truth. Divorce rates are higher, relationships come to an end, the stress of getting back to reality, the anxiety kicks in, we become lethargic, depressed and debilitated, leading us to reach our lowest point. That’s it… You’ve guessed it! And you’re not alone; you’re experiencing what they call, the dreaded winter blues, otherwise known as SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). The scientific evidence proves that daylight is the answer to our problems. Light that enters the eye causes changes in our hormone levels throughput the body. January is by far the worst month in our calendars; we find that we have overindulged in food, which leaves us feeling overweight and sluggish, leading us to believe that the latest diet fad will be the answer to all of our problems. Other challenges we face include having no money due to our spending habits at Christmas and then, of course, the miserable weather, that makes us go into hibernation over the winter period. Feel like there’s no way out of the winter depression? Well your wrong! Here are some tips in how you can help fight off those winter blues…

Get outside as often as possible

Escape from the indoors, don’t keep yourself locked away, this will only make you feel worse. Even sitting next to a window can help. Our bodies need to be stimulated by light, so, get out and about. There are some fantastic deals around, so, why not book a last minute winter break, somewhere sunny, even if it is only for a long weekend. Make the most of getting the fresh air.

Create a Budget

Believe me, creating a budget at the start of the year will be one of the best things you can do to get ready for the year ahead. Budgeting is necessary for having control over your finances and when used correctly budgeting can actually be a really fun task. All you will be required to do is to track your expenses and income, make a list of both of these things, incorporate your financial goals and keep check of your budget on a monthly basis.

Consider Light Therapy

Its cold and dark outside and we just want to snuggle up in front of a warm fire and make as minimal movement as possible. The darkness has many negative affects on our body and light is necessary to reducing symptoms of SAD. Research has also shown that blue light may be more effective in reducing symptoms. Many individuals are now considering light therapy, and in 80% of all cases, SAD symptoms have been reduced. You can now purchase your own light box from Amazon for less than £40. Doctors recommend sitting near or underneath your light box for 30 minutes, each morning. It is also important to get natural light into your home so make sure you keep blinds and curtains open during the daytime.

Eat Your Way to Happiness

No, that doesn’t mean eat everything and anything. It’s all about eating well and eating healthily. Making sure that you eat the right foods is crucial. We often crave all the comforting foods, including pizza and pasta, which leave you feeling sluggish and it is also important to stay away from foods that are high in sugar, yes forget those Christmas chocolates for a little while, everything in moderation, as they say.

More complex carbs take longer to digest, which will prevent spikes in blood sugar, creating different moods and increased levels of serotonin in the brain. Instead you should opt for whole grains, spinach, yams, broccoli, beans, lentils and skimmed milk. These foods will fill you up whilst providing long lasting nourishment and don’t forget to eat your five a day.

Get Active

Keeping active and maintaining your fitness is proven to improve your mental state and is actually one of the most important factors to beating the winter blues. If you take part in 30 minutes of exercise, 3 times a day you will begin to feel more active. Exercise is the key to beating depression and changing your mood by regulating the serotonin chemical in your brain.

De Clutter

Having a winter clean can be one of the most beneficial moves that you make in beating the winter blues.

Try Something New

Having a new interest keeps the mind active, diverting your attention away from stress and depression. A new hobby or activity could be as simple as reading a new book, watching a new TV series on Netflix, joining a gym or writing a blog. If you have something to look forward to and focus on, you will have a much clearer outlook and rid of any surrounding negativity.

How to Maintain

A Vegan Diet Beyond Veganuary

This year it is estimated that over 350,000 people will attempt a vegan diet for ‘Veganuary’. Whether it’s motivated by environmental concerns, health reasons or self awareness of meat consumption, veganism should be approached safely and not as a free pass to the ready meal and crisps isle. As more and more food production companies are cashing in on this New Year pledge, it’s important to recognise that just because a packet carries the label ‘vegan’, it doesn’t necessarily mean ‘healthy’.

WHAT IS VEGANISM? In a nutshell (pun intended) it’s a diet based on plant foods that excludes all animal products such as dairy and meat. Unfortunately, vegan quarter pounders, vegan sausage rolls, vegan bacon etc might appear to be ideal options when swapping out your usual meaty meals, but we encourage you to be aware of the ingredients in these highly processed products. Many vegans expect to lose weight and ‘feel better’ when becoming vegan, and while this is true in most cases, it doesn’t always work that way. Processed vegan foods (anything from a packet that has a list of ingredients attached) tend to come with added sugars, harmful fats, additives and preservatives and often food colouring. We recommend you always read the packet before you buy and check the ingredients.

FOLLOWING A VEGAN DIET BASED ON WHOLE FOODS HAS PRETTY SIGNIFICANT HEALTH BENEFITS • Weight loss • Lowered blood pressure • Lowered cholesterol • Less cardiovascular risk • Improved blood sugar control Eating more plants inevitably increases useful nutrients and vitamins such as fiber, folate, vitamin C, vitamin E, potassium and magnesium and of course less saturated fats that come from animals and dairy.

HEALTH

|

BUT THERE ARE DOWNSIDES TO BE AWARE OF... There are nutrients that vegans are at risk of becoming deficient in such as: Iron B12 Calcium Vitamin D Omega 3 fatty acids Why are these so important? Iron deficiency develops because the vegan diet eliminates heme iron (from animals) which is more easily absorbed in the body than the non-heme version found in plants. B12 deficiency can occur as this is naturally found in the animal products that are excluded on a vegan diet, and inadequate B12 intake leads to certain types of anemia, fatigue, loss of appetite and potential neurological symptoms.

VEGAN DIET CHECK LIST - Choose organic where possible. Look up the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen online as it’s not always necessary to buy everything organic. - Ensure you are having adequate protein from beans and legumes - Steer clear of processed packaged foods labeled as ‘vegan’ where possible

Calcium and Vitamin D is often found together in foods and these two nutrients work together to maintain bone health. Inadequate intake of one has an effect on the other.

- Check ingredients on packages and monitor sugar intake

Omega 3 fatty acids play key roles in heart, brain and eye health and reduce chronic inflammation. The best sources are fish and eggs, but they can also be found in some nuts and seeds such as flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts.

- If veganism works for you and you decide to adopt this way of eating long term, we recommend you supplement with a good quality B12, Vitamin D and Omega 3 supplement to support your health. Vegan options are available (but more expensive), always ask a nutritionist for their recommendations.

Alongside nutrient deficiencies eating out can be difficult for vegans. If you live near a major city you are more likely to find vegan restaurants and some fast food outlets that are now offering vegan alternatives. However, remember these come at a cost of added sugars, unhealthy fats and additives. If your motive for following a vegan diet is weight loss, you might be surprised to discover that many people experience the unexpected side effect of weight gain. This is due to the surprising amount of processed foods available for vegans. Cookies, crackers, cakes, ready meals, sauces, ice cream, vegan cheeses... the list is endless and high intake of these foods cancels out the benefits of a true vegan diet.

OUR VERDICT

- Don’t bow down to peer pressure. If veganism isn’t for you, that’s fine! There are other ways to support your personal goals and values. Increase your plant intake anyway, and choose ethically sourced animal products in moderation. Be an ethical flexitarian!

A vegan diet can be a healthy approach for individuals who ensure they are meeting all of their nutrient needs such as calcium, iron, B12, calcium, vitamin D and omega 3 fatty acids. It’s possible to follow a vegan diet of unhealthy processed foods. Following a healthy version may require more planning and time in the kitchen cooking and thinking ahead when arranging a meal out. We can all benefit from increasing plants in our diet, without eliminating animal products completely. Environmental and ethical beliefs are personal and no one should ever feel pressure to follow a vegan diet if it doesn’t sound appealing or support their personal health goals. Nutrition is personal.

How to Keep your

New Year’s

Resolutions

It’s traditional to start the New Year off with a comprehensive list of resolutions, albeit, an often unachievable list. Most of us desire to eat healthier, exercise more and cut out ‘sins’, and set targets in an attempt to achieve these (difficult) goals. As the weeks progress, it’s also traditional for us keen, wellintentioned individuals to lose track of our goals and move further and further away from our ultimate targets. But, how do we resolve this resolution-quitting, frankly frustrating problem? The first solution is setting targets that are actually achievable. We have all made the inevitable mistake of compiling lists of insurmountable resolutions in an attempt to tackle the upcoming year. More often than not, these lists contain resolutions only the most switched-on, over-achieving organisation-fanatic might accomplish. No matter how good our intentions might be, New Year’s resolutions often fade to a distant memory within the first few weeks of January. Here’s a few simple ways to ensure you stick to your resolutions as much as humanly possible in 2018, to give you a bigger chance of becoming a better person this New Year.

Be realistic

Don’t set unattainable targets. It’s easy enough to say, “I’m going to quit smoking this year, forever” and, “I won’t let another drop of alcohol touch my lips in 2018”, but in reality these huge life changes – and they are pretty huge – will be extremely difficult to stick to (especially bad habits that stem from stress-induced states). Instead, be realistic about your ability to quit cold turkey. Most likely, these goals will be achieved over a longer period of time than in just a few short weeks – and this isn’t necessarily a terrible thing. Instead of vowing to never eat a chocolate bar again, set a goal to significantly cut down your intake of whatever it might be you wish to banish from your life. It’s perfectly fine (and natural) to struggle to give up items you have thus far relied on to get you through your daily life. By setting more achievable targets such as, “I will cut down my daily amount of ‘x’ each month”, by the end of 2018 you will have come closer in leaps and bounds to your ultimate goal.

Include your loved ones

Setting goals to achieve the best version of you is wonderful. However, mixing-in resolutions that also help loved ones around you is the way forward for New Year’s vows. Rather than pledging to join your local gym that you fine-rightly know you will visit once before never mentioning again, try a resolution that makes

16 | Cornfield Magazine

others feel good, as well as you. Call your parents. Arrange a coffee with colleagues once a week. Spend more time with your children on the weekends. Prioritise the people who you value and care about most in life, and set your goals to show them how much you appreciate them. Honestly, this tactic will make you feel much better than any running machine ever could.

Don’t be disheartened

Giving up something you enjoy, or rely upon, is an extremely difficult and arduous task. When making your resolutions, take into account the fact that you might, at some point, relapse back to your old habits. However, this does not make you a bad person or a failure. It simply makes you human. As long as you keep your target in clear sight, and stick to your goals 98% of the time, eventually you will get there. By making your resolutions this way, you won’t feel absolutely disheartened by your late-night trip to the fridge for a Cadbury Dairy Milk bar or a mid-week after-work beer and give up completely. You will instead take your natural human inclination to resort to your comfort items on the chin, and eventually move on from relying upon these items, one step at a time. As long as you are actively trying to achieve your goals and are focused on your intentions, you will progress! With these key ideas in mind, remain positive and enthusiastic towards your goals, and make 2018 your best year yet.

New Year

New You

I trust that we are all in agreement that we are all ready to start the year off with some positivity as we begin to put things in place for new beginning and a fresh start, all for a brand New Year and a brand new you. The old you is out and 2017 is here upon us. The old you may have a track record of failing when it comes to creating New Year resolutions and implementing change. We all get that ‘January Feeling’, where we are in need of a clean slate and yes, all you actually need to see this through is a little bit of willpower and productiveness. Sometimes, we just need a push in the right direction to begin our transformation. There could be a number of reasons that you want to tackle becoming a new you. It may be that you have a tendency to eat the unhealthiest of foods and aim to lose weight by joining the gym, you may have had a disastrous year of relationships and dating and don’t know where to start, you may hate your job, need a new hobby or new friendships. It may be that you have just neglected yourself, which is exactly why you should take some time for you. Go on a weekend break away, or enjoy a spa day and beauty treatment, get your hair styled, enjoy a few little treats just for yourself. It’s way too easy to reflect on everything that has gone wrong the previous year and all the things we didn’t achieve. Many of us use the cliché of ‘my new years resolution is to not have any new years resolutions’. Is it just me or is this far too easy to say? We all need some goals to aim for, from time to time. So, we wanted to come up with an essential list to prepare for the new you, next year… Slow Down Set aside some time for you, to relax, unwind and do nothing. We all need a night in from time to time; we often need to maintain a sense of control over our busy lifestyles.

Follow the 60% Rule No one is perfect and perfectionism is simply an illusion. Trying to be too perfect can be damaging. If you are in the position of rating your work, friendship and relationship, and it adds up to 60%, then you really are not doing too badly. However, do be careful with the all or nothing approach, workaholism, fear of failure and being too sensitive to other people’s judgments. Nourish Your Body It is proven that the food we eat has a large impact on our mood and our serotonin levels. Surrounding yourself with greens, probiotics and dark chocolate, all has a positive effect on our bodies. Switch off all Tech The glare from our phones backlight can have a negative effect on how our bodies function, especially when we should be relaxing and before we go to sleep. Our bodies need to switch off and we all need up to 8 hours sleep. Trick Yourself into Saving We spend so much over the year and realise that we don’t require half of the things that we purchase or spend money on. It is always wise to have a good clear-out in January, so why not have a financial clear-out, clear out the subscriptions, look at lowering the bills, prepare a packed lunch and make your coffee form home. You will have saved without even realising. Change your workout Switch up your usual workouts. Doing the same fitness regime can sometimes appear tedious and a little boring, so why not try something a little different. There is so much choice with new fitness trends including PXT, Core Fusion Extreme and Bodhi, to name only a few.

Exercise that adds

a spring to your step

FUN and fitness are often intrinsically linked and a great example of this is when it comes to trampolining. It’s important to entice your children to cut down on their screen time and into an activity that will boost both their physical and mental health – and the popularity of trampoline parks is reaching new heights! Let’s run through the main health benefits of trampolining... It’s great for your heart - Like any aerobic exercise, jumping gets your heart to increase the rate at which it pumps blood around your body. It also strengthens the muscles needed for a healthy cardiovascular system. Jumping gives the same benefits as jogging in a third of the time - NASA (yes, NASA!) studies show that jumping on a trampoline for 10 minutes is equivalent to a 30-minute run. It’s easy on your joints - Trampolining is a low-impact exercise, because the bouncy mat absorbs the force when you land, preventing jarring of your ankles, knees, hips and spine. It’s easier on your joints than running or jogging. It helps you build strong bones - Repetitive jumping puts your bones under a small amount of stress, which is needed to encourage them to build up mineral content. This increases the density of your bones and reduces your chance of developing conditions such as osteoporosis. It builds strong muscles - Jumping strengthens the muscles in your legs, as they work hard to push you upwards. With repetitive jumping, your muscles have to contract more often than they do with most other exercises, which increases their stamina. It helps with co-ordination - You need to concentrate to maintain balance, achieve different positions, jump high and prepare for the next position – all at once. Practising this improves motor skills and helps with co-ordination. It’s good for relieving stress and boosting your mood - Trampolining releases endorphins, the feelgood brain chemicals. These can help to reduce stress and ease anxiety and depression. It’s fun and can leave you feeling invigorated. It helps to tone your body - Trampolining uses a variety of muscles, including your legs and stomach, because you use your core muscles to stay balanced. Bouncing on a trampoline on a regular basis can help to keep your stomach and bottom toned. It can assist you in losing weight - Jumping on a trampoline burns calories. It can also boost the rate at which your body metabolises food, which will help it to burn fat. It helps your lymphatic system to do its job - the lymph system, which carries toxic substances out of your body, needs gravity and body movement to work properly. Bouncing on a trampoline stimulates the lymphatic drainage system to get rid of toxins, bacteria and waste from your cells, effectively cleansing them.

Special needs catered for JUMP IN trampoline park in Warwick runs Rebound Therapy classes aimed at children and adults with autism or heightened sensory needs. The trampoline therapy forms part of inclusive relaxed sessions where those with special needs are encouraged to explore unassisted play with their families and carers in a safe, lower sensory environment. Trampolines are key to this specific type of exercise therapy which benefits those across virtually the whole spectrum of disabilities. It has been proven to provide a huge number of potential therapeutic and physiological benefits, from cardio-respiratory, muscle tone and balance and posture through to perception and communication. Benefits that are more specific to autism include: improvements in calmness, focus, concentration, eye contact, memory, following instructions, motivation, self-esteem, confidence, potential for learning across the curriculum, and happiness. Other benefits would be: reduction in tactile defensiveness, anxiety, agitation, shimming, rocking, self-harming, hitting, and antisocial behaviours. Jump In Rebound Therapy-qualified instructors are on hand to work either one to one or in groups after a full assessment of needs is carried out. Rob Borg, Regional Manager for Jump In Warwick, said: “Freedom to play and move unaided is often something that children and adults with special needs can be restricted on when participating in many physical activities. Trampoline parks can go some way towards offering more scope for unassisted play.”

It improves energy levels - more oxygen flows around your body when you bounce on a trampoline and this can result in a rise in energy levels. Meanwhile, getting extra oxygen to your brain can improve mental alertness. It improves our mental health -Trampolining makes us happier, more self-confident and more positive about ourselves since when we jump, our body releases endorphine hormones.

He added: “Trampolines at our parks offer great physio benefits for those with low muscle tone who need to maintain/build their core strength. This is because trampolines encourage the participant to constantly correct their balance when jumping and landing, this also helps with co-ordination which has been linked to learning and neurological development.” “Special needs schools and day centres have reported on how the trampoline has great benefits for autistic children and adults with heightened sensory needs. The trampoline can be very a very stimulating piece of play equipment for these individuals.” Paul Kaye, CEO of ReboundTherapy.org (international body and training course provider for Rebound Therapy) said: “I am delighted to see so many trampoline parks introducing Rebound Therapy into their programme. By providing Rebound Therapy, trampoline venues are able to provide a much-needed ‘fully inclusive’ service by offering sessions to learning disability care homes, special needs groups, schools and charity agencies and health groups.” To find out more or book an assessment for the Rebound Therapy-specific session, with a qualified Jump In Level 2 Rebound Therapy practitioner email hello@gojumpin.com and an area expert will be in touch with more information. A spokesperson for Jump In Warwick said: “After a few hours in the classroom what better way to end the school day than jumping around our trampoline park and taking advantage of our fantastic Jump In After School Deal.” If your youngsters are craving more of a party vibe, they can’t go far wrong with Jump In’s Friday Night Takeover events. Recently relaunched, the fun-packed party nights are the perfect way to end a busy school week for any child aged four and over. January blues

hitting you hard?

You’re not alone. At Cornfield, we reckon the best way to get through them is to keep making plans and treating yourself and where better than Stratford-upon-Avon’s number one restaurant, Loxleys? The family-run restaurant on Sheep Street kicked off 2020 in style with a New Year’s Eve gala dinner that included entertainment from the X Factor’s Georgia Burgess, proving a hit with all of its guests, regulars and new faces, and even saw one couple get engaged on the night! The fun for 2020 doesn’t stop there. Family-run restaurant Loxleys has a reputation for serving top-notch food in gorgeous surroundings all year round. The A La Carte menu offers a range of dishes showcasing a passion for local produce and freshly-prepared ingredients. There are small plates and starters, classics like lasagne and fish and chips, as well as modern British dishes designed by the restaurant’s own innovative, passionate chefs. Try chargrilled lamb cutlets and braised shoulder with broccoli puree, mint potato terrine and green olive jus or slow confit pork belly and Applewood smoked cheek with shallot puree, black pudding potato cake and apple jus. And for those doing Veganuary, the restaurant has meat-free and plant-based options including its hit vegan dish of smoked tofu with puy lentil and aubergine fritters, ‘buffalo’ cauliflower, pepper puree and tomato and smoked chilli salsa. Don’t forget the steaks either - Loxleys serves up 28-Day, dry-aged Hereford beef with cuts from Chateaubriand to fillet medallions and all the garnishes. They have a great range of offers that pause for the festive season but have started up again in the new year. If you’re heading to Stratford for the theatre, try the two or three-course pre-theatre menu daily up until 6.30pm for £16.95 for two courses or £20.95 for three. FOOD & DRINK

the

Detox Myth In recent years, the buzzword ‘detox’ has captivated consumers and fitness-addicts across the globe. But what exactly is detoxing? The Collins English Dictionary defines detoxing as a “treatment that is intended to remove poisonous or harmful substances from your body,” that is “given to people who are addicted to drugs or alcohol in order to stop them from being addicted.” The word detoxing, however, has been taken away from the medical realm of rehabilitation and instead has been redefined in the health and fitness industry as a way to banish harmful toxins that ‘build up’ in the body. This marketing myth aims to convince unsuspecting buyers to purchase various ‘detoxing kits’. Put simply, detox dietary claims are often very exaggerated, completely ill informed, and actually are often more damaging and harmful than beneficial. A prolonged lack of protein (as suggested by many detox plans) can result in a weakened immune system, and has the potential to break down muscles. Fasting for periods of time can appear to result in weight loss, but this is simply loss of water, rather than fat. By not eating healthily or regularly, you are likely to feel symptoms such as tiredness, dizziness, nausea and irritability. Depriving your body of essential foods and nutrients through strict detoxing methods is in itself potentially dangerous. Qualified, registered dietitians have dismissed many claims made by socalled detoxing gurus, and instead promote simple, healthy, balanced lifestyles.

The Truth

Eating healthily significantly increases energy levels, improves the functioning of liver, and has a beneficial impact upon skin condition, appearance, and complexion. Physical changes to appearance can in turn promote positive emotional health. By making changes to our daily lifestyle and eating habits, it is possible to boost our overall wellbeing and secure a healthier future in years to come. Eating healthily is about balance. Instead of falling for the ‘detox myth’ and subjecting your body to unhealthy crash diets or ‘quick fixes’, begin your healthy lifestyle this New Year. We’ve all heard the positive effects of eating ‘5 a day’ and exercising regularly – and it really is that simple. 36 | Cornfield Magazine

Check online for more information at www.hellofresh.co.uk.

A Diverse Diet

It isn’t only fruit and vegetables that are good for you! To ensure you keep a regular, balanced diet, make sure you fill your kitchen with a variety of fish, lean meats, low fat dairy products, fruit, vegetables and nuts. Eat food filled with nutrients such as fibre, minerals, proteins and good fats to ensure you provide your body with enough energy and goodness. Stick to recommended portion sizes, and always read the label to check saturated fats, sugars, and salts content.

Drink H2O

Drink plenty of water. It’s that simple. Water is completely natural, free, cheap and good for you! Replace fizzy energy drinks packed full of sugar with a glass of milk or water – this is especially important for children. If you don’t particularly enjoy drinking water, try adding a lime wedge or drink a bottle of sparkling water. It’s recommended we drink six to eight glasses of fluid every day – and water is the best option!

Introduction to

Sutton Coldfield History

Sutton Coldfield was an extensive parish lying between Birmingham and Lichfield in the county of Warwick. The population increased throughout the nineteenth century when many people moved to the area, notably many manufacturers and businessmen such as Walter Showell, an Oldbury Brewer who resided in Walmley House. In 1871 there were four ecclesiastical districts of Sutton Coldfield (Holy Trinity), Hill (St James), Boldmere (St Michael) and Walmley (St John the Evangelist) with a total population of 4,936. As Sutton moved to the beginning of the twentieth century it had grown and comprising the addition of Maney (St Peter) and Wylde Green (Emmanuel) had a population in 1911 of 20,132. Of course, this led to building programmes for new houses and public buildings. The first Mayor of Sutton Coldfield was Sir John Benjamin Stone (18381914) conservative MP and amateur photographer. He announced the foundation of the National Photographic Record Association (NPRA) to catalogue historical buildings and items of interest. One such historical building in Sutton was ‘New hall’. Built in c.1200 in a castellated style it was said to be the oldest residential house with a moat. Throughout its varied history it became a college for boys and a luxury hotel. Moor Hall was built by Sutton’s greatest benefactor John Harman, Bishop of Exeter also known as Bishop Vesey. His birthplace was believed to be Moor Hall Farmhouse, the design of which he copied in the 51 cottages he built in Sutton. Characteristically they were built of stone and included a spiral staircase. The remaining Vesey Cottages are High Heath, Whitehouse Common Road; Ford keepers Cottage, Wylde Green Road; Old Stone House, Maney Hill Road; Vesey Cottage, Weeford Road; and Vesey Grange, Birmingham Road. Vesey also endowed the Grammar School and brought many improvements to the town, including the gift of Sutton Park. Four Oaks Hall and Park became the home of John Hartopp who in 1827 entered an exchange of land to gain an area of Sutton Park. To do this Hartopp was required to create a new Park entrance and a road from the town which became known as ‘Town Gate’ and Park Road. Four Oaks Hall and estate was sold by 1880 to a limited company who planned to build a magnificent racecourse on the land with stands for spectators. The Grand National Hunt Steeplechase was held there in March 1881 and Pride of Prussia came in 1st place. Unfortunately, despite reported crowds arriving at the new Four Oaks Railway station the company met with financial difficulty and was sold in August 1890 to the businessman Marquis of Clanrikarde. The estate was laid out for the development of exclusive housing, many of which were listed for their architectural value. Carhampton House was built on the site of the demolished Four Oaks Hall, but the gate posts still survive. Many architects came to Sutton, not just to see their plans come to fruition within Four Oaks but throughout the whole Sutton area and to meet the needs of the growing population. Rossbret

Advertising Pays Ignorant Bob wakes up in the morning after sleeping in an advertised bed with advertised sheets. He will shower in an advertised shower, with advertised soap and have breakfast of advertised juice, advertised cereal and advertised bread. Three New Entertainment Venues

For Digbeth

More reasons than ever to visit Birmingham’s Creative Quarter Three new entertainment venues have launched in Birmingham’s creative quarter, Digbeth. Gaming concept Chance and Counters is based in the Custard Factory, and ‘social sports bar’ The Floodgate and The Great Birmingham Bake Off, an interactive baking experience, are based on Floodgate Street. The businesses bolster Digbeth’s burgeoning and eclectic leisure, retail, hospitality and live music scene which includes Digbeth Dining Club, Baked in Brick, The Mill, The Arena, Dig Brew, The Mocking Bird and Ridding & Wynn. The Floodgate is the brainchild of three school friends, Stephen O’Reilly, Mike Gregory and Chris Ross, who pooled their skills and interests to create the social sports bar. The new venue brings social sports, such as Pit-Pat Table Golf, Baseball cages and even Curling, together with cocktails in an interior boasting a plethora of UV murals, hand painted by leading Birmingham street artists, Gent48. Previously a converted warehouse, The Floodgate Spans 10,000 square feet and also has an upstairs area for live music and the arts, private parties, conferences and corporate events. Chance and Counters blends the nostalgia of over 500 board games – both old and new - with local beers and ciders and an extensive food offering, which includes brunch, burgers and tacos. With two popular sites in Bristol and Cardiff already, the 3,500 square foot, 100-seater Digbeth venue marks their biggest venture yet. The interior features secluded booths and a bright, open area overlooking the river. The creators of London’s highest rated event, The Big London Bake, are bringing their awardwinning concept to Digbeth. Launching this weekend, the Big Birmingham Bake is based in a fully kitted out marquee on Floodgate street, complete with 12 idyllic bake stations, a treasure trove of customisable decorations and is led by a team of professional bakers who will give hints and tips to help create the winning bake. The businesses launch as Oval Real Estate, the owners of the Custard Factory and 98 other buildings and sites in Digbeth, announce plans for a consultation on long terms plans for the Digbeth Estate. It is anticipated that these new elements will include new places to live, work and play including offices, shops, restaurants and cafes, new public realm, arts and culture spaces, capable of hosting a range of events and activities. A Wonderful Stay At

Winchcombe Farm

We decided to go and explore the magic of Winchcombe Farm recently, and because it is a place which is suitable for kids we took them along too. There was no doubt that the place was incredibly pretty to look at and we had a nice time overall. Of course, specifics are just as important, so let’s see if we can try and explore them in a little more detail. We stayed overnight, which is an important thing to remember going forward. So let’s talk about the place itself. It is definitely a rural retreat, far away from the noise and chaos of the big cities. That in itself makes it good for people who want to try and enjoy life away from the hustle and bustle. The area itself was absolutely lovely. It was very rural and very disconnected from the world, which meant that you could enjoy yourself without having to worry about whether you hear a car or a van go past, because this was fairly infrequent. Everything that we could possibly want was thought through and there was no expense spared. It made it easy to unwind and enjoy ourselves, because when you’re staying away you don’t want to have to worry about whether or not your accommodation will have this or that. It was our firm belief that we had everything that we needed and then more, which was incredible considering what it was that we experienced. The getaway itself has very few issues. We might have encountered a small handful of different issues, but there is no doubt that they were fixed quickly and efficiently. We wanted to have the best possible experience and I’m pleased to say that we did. It was lovely to be part of something where the customers were the clear and main focus. We want to enjoy ourselves when we go away, because it is only natural. What else is there to say? The interior was nice and very pleasantly decorated. The furniture was luxurious and comfortable - as we previously said there was no expense spared. We know how important it can be for people to have the best, and so we were pleased to see that we had it here and now. It was obvious that we were being exclusively catered to and it made all the difference. The rooms were plenty big enough and the whole area was definitely family friendly. It was easy to see just how families could come here on a regular basis.

CALLING ALL JAWSOME RANGERS SEA LIFE LAUNCHES ‘JAWSOME’ QUEST IN PARTNERSHIP WITH TOP TRUMPS It’s no secret that we like quality stays. We only go to the best places and so here was one that we hoped to have meet our expectations. Because that’s what it is really all about at the end of the day. We want people to meet our expectations and to feel like we can have what we are looking for. This provider did incredibly well, and I’m so glad that we went. It was the perfect time to recharge and rest - to really step back and appreciate what we had. A loving family and the resources to enjoy ourselves means that it’s easy to try and make the most out of the time that we had. So let’s recap. We wanted the best and we felt like we got it. I really enjoyed my time here. My partner and kids both felt the same way. We all agreed that there was not a lot that could have been improved on. In fact, this is such a good place that we intend on booking it for Christmas in 2020, because I really can’t praise this enough. Being in the middle of what can only be described as exasperation with modern life means that I was so grateful to be able to go away and realise what was important in life. I had a chance to stop worrying about the little things and could instead focus on what was vital for moving forward. It was all thanks to this place. The views were wonderful, the experience was enjoyable and there was a real sense of enjoyment and fun. Being in the countryside is always a recharging thing, and it was so wonderful to be able to enjoy ourselves and to realise exactly what it was that we all wanted out of the holiday - the chance to spend time with each other and to focus on what was important. It was a wonderful time and I really do praise all the staff who worked hard to make sure that we had the best experience. They were the real heroes of the experience, and I thank them. Book a stay at Winchcombe Farm at www.winchcombefarm.co.uk or call Jo on 01295 680190.

They’ve earned two Grammy Awards, seven American Music Awards, 25 Top Ten R&B hits, nine Top Ten pop hits, 31 gold & platinum albums and sold over 70 million albums worldwide. They’ll be joined by 80s soul superstars, Shalamar, who had massive hits with ‘A Night to Remember’, ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’, ‘The Second Time Around’, ‘Friends’ and ‘Make That Move’. They promise to be a powerful and energetic act. UK acid jazz and funk royalty, The Brand New Heavies, will be gracing the main stage on the back of sell-out shows across Europe, 2m album sales and 16 Top 40 hits including ‘Midnight At The Oasis’, ‘Some-times’’, ‘Dream On Dreamer’, Dream Come True’. ‘Stay This Way’ and ‘You Are The Universe’. Also appearing on Saturday are electronic dance duo, Snap!. Having had two Number 1 hits with ‘The Power’ and ‘Rhythm is a Dancer’, their other powerful hits include ‘Oops Up’ and ‘Mary Had a Little Boy’. First to be announced for Sunday’s line up is one of pop’s greatest vocalists, Tony Hadley, who fronted 80s New Romantic band, Spandau Ballet. The band had numerous chart-topping singles and albums all over the world, including the epic “Through the Barricades”, the international number one “True”, and the un-official London Olympics theme “Gold”. Also on Sunday’s line-up is the internationally acclaimed Belinda Carlisle, who successfully pursued her solo career after leaving the Go-Go’s in 1984. She had 18 solo singles in the UK Top 40 Charts including ‘Heaven is a Place on Earth’, ‘Circle in the Sand’, ‘Leave a Light on’, ‘(We Want) The Same Thing’ and ‘Live Your Life Be Free’. With a career spanning four decades, Leo Sayer, is sure to get the crowds singing along on the Sunday. His first seven hit singles in the UK all reached the Top 10 – including “Thunder In My Heart’, ‘When I Need You’, ‘You Make Me Feel Like Dancing’, ‘Moonlighting’ and ‘The Show Must Go On’. Out of the punk explosion during the summer of 1976, come ‘From The Jam’ – featuring Russell Hastings, Bruce Foxton and Mike Randon. With Bruce Foxton being the original bassist from The Jam band, they will be playing all of The Jam’s greatest hits on the Sunday.

Kia ProCeed

By motoring journalist, Tim Barnes-Clay - Twitter @carwriteups Instagram @tbarnesclay

“It’s oddly shaped, but I like it”. These words streaked through my mind when I first clapped eyes on the Kia ProCeed. Sure, it’s not the sexiest of names, and it’s not the “Kate Moss” of the automotive catwalk, but it’s got something. This auto brand wasn’t so cool in years gone by. Its cars had the aerodynamics of bricks, but they were safe - and very family-oriented. The family bit hasn’t gone – indeed, the marque is producing SUVs like nobody’s business. Take the XC40 on test here. The model is chunky, yet sleek – and doesn’t resemble a brick – that’s for sure.

The XC40 isn’t a cheap package to buy or lease, and it’s expensive to run in T5 form, but you’ll still want one the moment you go for a test drive. What’s more, if your kids are anything like mine, you’ll have no choice in the matter. This is a car that’ll please not just you as the driver, but all the family. And, who knows, some of that Swedish cool might even rub off on you.

Fast Facts: Kia ProCeed 1.6 CRDI GT Line DCT7 • Max speed: 124 mph • 0-62 mph: 9.8 sec • Combined mpg: 54.3 • Engine layout: 1598cc, 4-cylinder turbo diesel • Max. power (PS): 136 • CO2: 110 g/km • Price: £25,785

In R-Design trim, you get a car that has an athletic edge – but it’s the interior that gives it the advantage. Gorgeous suede-effect materials and a perfectly screwed together cabin make the XC40 a delightful place to be. The SUV will seat four adults comfortably - and five at a push. The boot is large enough for everyone’s luggage, and things like the powerful sound system make every journey a pleasure. It’s difficult to get stressed in this car, even when stuck in a queue. What’s more, should a bad thing happen, like an accident, you’re in one of the safest smaller SUVs money can buy. The drive can be dynamic as well as chilled, especially in ‘T5’ petrol turbo guise, as tested here. There is a downside to this engine, though – I never got more than late 20smpg out of it all week. Maybe it was my heavy right foot? It’s claimed to do around 39mpg. Volvo has a ‘premium’ image more than ever these days – and justifiably so. There’s no vacuous marketing spin around this brand – it really does deliver– from quality to ride comfort, and from safety to looks. I know it’s shallow, but this is an SUV you’ll be glad to see parked outside your home. It’s not got the kind of looks only a mother could love – which can’t be said for some high-riding vehicles on the market.

Fix Auto UK

celebrate three years

with Arenacross

Fix Auto UK - the fastest-growing professional automotive repair network in the UK, joins the 2020 Arenacross Tour as the Freestyle Motocross partner in their third year of partnering with Europe’s leading action-sports show. With more than 700 bodyshops worldwide and over 105 of those in the UK, Fix Auto UK is part of a global business repairing more than 150,000 vehicles per annum. Operating in nine countries, the UK branch provides its bodyshops and its insurer clients with exceptional operational, marketing and procurement support. Ian Pugh of Fix Auto UK said; “I am delighted that we are partnering with Arenacross for the third year running. With the tour heading to Wembley this year, the level of exposure and audience the tour will reach is only going to increase on the previous two years. Having Dan Whitby on board as our Brand Ambassador is also a huge asset for us as we look to raise our profile. I am looking forward to seeing all of the Fix Auto UK branding taking centre stage in the arena when the tour lands in Belfast on 17th January!” Matt Bates, promoter of The Arenacross Tour added; “It’s great to see Fix Auto supporting Arenacross for the second year where we’re all hugely grateful of their support and vision. Last year saw one of the UK’s largest vehicle repair centres get involved with our incredible sport, and now they’ve stepped up as a major partner as we move in to the 2020 series. Arenacross connects brands and fans in a way like no other – indoor venues, comfy seats, an amazing show and some of the best race action on two wheels at a time of year that we’re starved of every kind of Motorsport - and we’re proud that Fix Auto have chosen Arenacross to launch their marketing objectives.” Freestyle Motocross is a huge crowd favourite at Arenacross and Fix Auto UK will be at the forefront the insane flips, whips and tricks with some of the world’s best Freestyle Motocross riders including Fix Auto UK Ambassador and Bolddog FMX legend Dan Whitby. FMX, or Freestyle Motocross, takes the high-flying action of MX and lets it loose 40 feet above your head on a purpose-built Fix Auto UK branded ramp! Following a record year, the 2020 Arenacross Tour heads back to The SSE Arena, Wembley, joining Resorts World Arena, Birmingham and The SSE Arena, Belfast in what’s set to be a stunning winter showdown from Europe’s leading action-sports show. The 2020 Tour will see two nights of entertainment at every venue; The SSE Arena, Belfast (17th and 18th January), Resorts World Arena, Birmingham (31st January and 1st February) and the grand finale firing into London’s SSE Arena, Wembley (21st and 22nd February).

Unmissable

Cornfield Sport By Alex Dudley

Six Nations Takes Over England will have little time to dwell on their World Cup final defeat as the Six Nations will get underway in the middle of February. Wales are the defending champions, but how they deal with the loss of Warren Gatland will be crucial for their chances. Eddie Jones’ side were unlucky in the World Cup, and fell just short against the tremendous South African side. Ireland will also feel like they will have a good chance at reclaiming their title, while France may also think that they will have an outside chance. Italy and Scotland will also be involved, but neither are likely to be competition for the title. The action gets underway on the 8th, as Ireland face Wales and England square off against Scotland.

Conor McGregor’s Return To The Octagon One of the most talked-about sporting superstars on the globe makes his long-awaited comeback to the UFC in January, where he will face off against Donald Cerrone in Las Vegas. The Irishman hasn’t been seen in the Octagon since his defeat against Khabib Nurmagomedov. McGregor was forced to submit in the fourth round against the Russian, and MMA fans are already hoping that a re-match could be on the cards later this year. In order to make that dream fight happen, he will first have to navigate his way past Cerrone. Cowboy is one of the most respected fighters in the UFC, and he currently holds the record for the most bouts with the company. Cerrone has been in disappointing form recently, and was beaten in his last two outings against Justin Gaethje and Tony Ferguson. You can catch all the action on BT Sport Box Office on Sunday 19th January.

Super Bowl LV As is typically the case, the Super Bowl will take centre stage on the 7th February. The New England Patriots crashed out in the playoff round, which means there will be a new name on the Vince Lombardi trophy this year, and there will be a host of sides believing that they could have a big night in Miami. The action will get underway around 10 pm on the evening, with the action finally coming to an end in the early hours of the morning. The half time show is one of the biggest drawing factors for the event, and this year’s honour will reportedly fall on the shoulders of Jennifer Lopez. Even if you aren’t a big American football fan, the Super Bowl is always a sporting event that should be checked out.
