CORNISH COLLEGE OF THE ARTS
A Letter from the President
As you think ahead to your continuing journey as an artist, you’ll find that Cornish stands out in ways that are important to you as a prospective student. Seattle is famous for arts, culture, and innovation, and Cornish is at the center of it all. Our campus is a warm, friendly, and bustling place. Faculty and alumni mentor students, helping them to launch and develop successful careers. A majority of graduates report that they are working in the arts and feel great about their student experience and ongoing Cornish relationships. They are on Broadway, in films, winning prizes in art competitions, dancing in prestigious companies, and creating design work in all kinds of enterprises. How do we approach young, emerging artists? For 100 years, we have helped students hone their skills while promoting a unique emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, conceptual understanding, and research.
We call this “professional practice in the arts with an intellectual edge.” We present and explore the newest ideas, techniques, and technology. We strongly believe that Cornish must help lead students where their fields are going, always looking ahead to what’s next. The Cornish imperative is to “Make the Future.” Outstanding, bold, and important artists have emerged from Cornish—a distinctive environment that energetically supports individual expression, collaboration, intellectual rigor, and new ideas. If you are creative, passionate, and like to investigate the as-yet-unknown, then we are your people. If Cornish sounds like it could be your kind of place, read on. We hope you enjoy this brief overview of the College. Please consider my door always open to your questions and conversation. Warmly,
PR E S I D E NT N A N CY J. USC H E R , PH . D.

ANIMATION
Pen-and-ink, stop-motion, digital 3D— you’ll develop many animation skills in our small, focused classes. Animation technology is constantly changing, and we stay on top of it, making sure our digital tools are absolutely current.
But animation isn’t just tools and techniques. Visual storytelling, explorations in narrative, and collaboration with faculty and peers make Cornish animation a wellrounded and complete program.
GRAPHIC DESIGN
Learn to create messaging for print, packaging, UX/UI, experiential design, and the web. You can choose to master classic letterpress and bookmaking skills, but you can also learn to create information systems, packaging, brand and brand story development, and design for social change. Our designers learn many skills, but they also learn about context. With opportunities to learn about history and the impact visual communicators have on society, you’ll understand the “why” as well as the “how” of contemporary message making.

MOTION GRAPHICS
When graphic design lifts off the page and begins to move around on the screen, we call it “motion design.” Here at Cornish, you’ll build the skills you need to become an innovator in the complex and rapidly-changing media design environment. Study the converging disciplines of motion design, film titling, experimental film, and 3D modeling. Develop an indepth understanding of 2D and 3D video graphics and animation for gaming, web development, and interactive presentation. And prepare for a vibrant career in a growing, fast-paced industry.
INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE
Interior architects design the spaces in which we all live and work. At Cornish, you’ll learn to analyze and transform space, creating sustainable environments that promote health, comfort, and well-being. You will consider culture, history, and context, while refining your hand and digital skills. You’ll innovate with technologically-driven environments, and apply your skills to the designing of commercial, residential, and public space.
ILLUSTRATION
Today’s illustrators work in graphic storytelling, packaging, game design, print, and dynamic media. At Cornish, you’ll have the opportunity to hone your craft and handskills in digital and traditional media, and you’ll also learn about narrative structures, work closely with professional illustrators, and develop your own, personal style.

COMICS / GRAPHIC NOVELS
In publishing today, the growth is in graphic storytelling. Comics and graphic novels are setting publishing records. Web comics delight and educate. At Cornish, you’ll learn the skills to get your ideas out of your head and onto the page or the web. Guided by our internationally-known faculty of graphic storytellers, you’ll learn hand and digital skills as well as techniques of narrative storytelling and character development.
USER EXPERIENCE DESIGN
Many kinds of design skills converge in UX/UI, and you can acquire them at Cornish, from designing websites and apps for tablets and phones, to creating augmented apparel, wearable tech, and triggered environments. You can design for technology, or go deeper and learn to code HTML, CSS, and Javascript. At Cornish, you’ll work with designers and developers from cutting-edge interactive studios, and have opportunities for internships with some of the best-known studios in the country.

LIGHTING DESIGN
In our intensive and focused program, you’ll become proficient in the nuanced art of theatrical lighting; using the lighting cue to establish movement, passage of time, motivation of characters, and a range of emotional states. Begin your study of the lighting arts with color theory of light, lighting plots, electrical theory, and lighting instruments. In your fourth year, you’ll serve as a primary stage manager on main stage productions.
TECHNICAL DIRECTION
You will master skills in welding, metalworking, carpentry, props construction, and electrics while you take courses in theater graphics and production design. Collaborating with skilled faculty and talented peers, you’ll work your way up, serving as master carpenter and assistant technical director on production teams. Performance Spaces At Cornish, you’ll work in a variety of spaces operated by the college. These range from black box studios to the historic Cornish Playhouse located on the grounds of the Seattle Center. Every year, more than 30 professional dance companies, music groups, and
theaters use the Playhouse, often adding Cornish students to the show both on stage and behind the scenes during their stay. Students from all disciplines also work throughout the city and surrounding area on site-specific installations, performances, and more.
“While working at the Playhouse, I met other theater technicians who not only shared their knowledge with me but also became connections to the theater world. The experience helped me feel comfortable, capable, and confident that I am in the right program and that I will be prepared for a future in this industry.” SHELBY CHOO

Residence Life LIVE AND LEARN
In the heart of our downtown campus, our residence hall is a vibrant home to a supportive community of talented students from all of the visual and performing arts—and from all over the US and abroad. Beyond standard amenities (WIFI, laundry, and the like), our residence hall has 24-hour security, room controlled air and heat, and community amenities. Large individual rooms each have a private bath. Our newest residence hall features state-of-the-art fitness and media studios, and more than 16,000 square feet specifically designed for classes, workshops, and other on-site learning activities.
STUDIO -LIFE BALANCE
We encourage our students to dream the future and make it happen. But we also know that realizing dreams is not a solo sport. College life can be stressful and our Student Affairs staff members are experts at helping students with time management
and stress reduction. They will help you maintain a balanced approach to your individual education. We encourage you to explore a city full of artistic inspiration, from parks and waterfronts to bustling music and gallery venues.

FINANCING YOUR DREAMS
At Cornish, we believe every artist should be given the opportunity for an exceptional education. We understand college is an investment in your future. We do everything possible to eliminate financial barriers. All students are urged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to ensure maximum consideration for financial aid and scholarships. Cornish offers the full range of financial aid funding: merit and need-based Cornish scholarships, federal and state grants, work-study, federal loans for parents and students, and private educational loans for students. All students are automatically considered for Cornish College and Cornish Department scholarships. Because some funds are distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, we encourage you to apply early. Further information for new and current students is available at cornish.edu/financial_aid.
