ornish College of the Arts is the college for tomorrow’s designer—with a 100-year tradition of training exceptional talents. Your education here will take you to places you haven’t even thought of yet. Bring your talent to Cornish and turn your dreams into reality. It’s not just HOW or what you design, but WHY you design. We look for students who live for their work and are ready to develop their creative, intellectual, and technical skills to become a professional designer. There are many pathways to a design degree at Cornish: narrative systems, type and image, user experience (UX), or interior architecture. Earn a BFA in Design or, through Cornish’s partnership with Vermont College of the Arts, graduate in five years with a Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT).

Build your technical skills while pursuing your interests during your Foundations year. Explore all the visual arts as you create alongside artists and filmmakers. You’ll work across boundaries as you explore diverse creative practices aligned with your liberal arts studies.

Cornish’s faculty—nearly all working designers themselves—empower your choices and help you shape the design career that you want. Study graphic design and narrative systems from those already producing a variety of media, including traditional publishing and the latest apps. Experience how illustration, type, and image can create the stories found in everything from comic books to games. Learn how user experience creates an intersection of design and technology and a new frontier for innovative product development. Work with professionals shaping commercial, residential, and public spaces through interior architecture.

Personal contact is an important aspect of our Admission process. We recommend that, if possible, you visit our campus and talk with an Admission Counselor. Your visit with us will allow you to meet one-onone with a professional who will be able to answer your questions about Cornish and offer useful insights about the portfolio review process. The more we are able to learn about you and your artistic vision and ambition, the better we are able to provide you with the information you need to make the right educational choice for your future.

Here you will find the space to create and the materials you want—from book arts lab to 3D fabrication. Whether analog or digital, you will find tools and inspiration that you haven’t had a chance to explore yet.

Throughout the year, visiting designers connect with our students both in lecture series and in the studio. You’ll also have opportunities to visit nearby high-tech firms and see how design is shaping the world that we live in.
