Whether you major in vocal performance, instrumental performance, or composition, you’ll quickly be making something new through the improvisation and entrepreneurship skills learned at Cornish. You’ll also find a wealth of opportunities for collaboration with students and faculty from art and design, film and digital media, dance, theater, and performance production. Highly personalized training and individualized student attention is the hallmark of our intimate, intensive program. In our Bachelor of Music curriculum in instrumental performance, you can emphasize jazz, contemporary chamber music, or solo performance. Classes are small and your performance opportunities will be numerous from chamber music to guitar or string quartets, percussion ensemble, or chamber orchestra. Cornish offers a dozen different jazz ensembles in a variety of traditions from bebop to blues, fusion to free jazz, and more. In the vocal arts program, you will be exploring your passion for classical singing, opera, music theater, jazz, or popular song. Our emphasis on new work supports the singer/songwriter looking to create an original sound.

COMPOSITION Our composition program is the heart and soul of our music department. We provide composers with a rigorous course of study in the foundational skills of theory, music notation, conducting, arranging, and orchestration while allowing students to explore their own passions and to realize their own creative dreams. There are no arbitrary limits placed on your creativity, and we encourage our composers to be experimental and innovative. Our composition practicums allow student

The Artist Diploma in Early Music is a post-baccalaureate, performance-oriented program intended for instrumentalists and vocalists who have completed a Bachelor of Music degree or its equivalent. The program provides intensive private instruction, coaching, and performance experience in historical performance practices from 1600-1750.

MEET THE LEADERS Cornish has a 100-year-old history of hosting visiting artists throughout the school year and making them available to our students in master classes and demonstrations. From the very beginning, Cornish’s Music Department has been known for fostering such modern talents as John Cage. Today that tradition extends to an international roster of guest artists who provide master classes every semester.
