At Cornish you will take what you learn in class into a variety of productions from your first year to your last. Between September and May, the Theater Department produces more than 40 different shows, including musicals, ensemble-generated works, classical plays, and exciting new works from groundbreaking contemporary playwrights. You’ll have performance opportunities here almost every month of your school year.

The best of the nation’s theater artists come to Seattle to perform and create new works. Every year, the Theater Department offers a multitude of opportunities to learn from these professionals, from lunchtime chats with Tony Award-winning playwrights to workshops and master classes with stage and film stars.

Cornish’s theater faculty are all working theater professionals, performing frequently on stage. The college’s many theater venues include the Cornish Playhouse at Seattle Center. When not in use by the college, the Cornish Playhouse and our other venues host exciting companies from around Seattle and beyond, giving students a chance to see and work with professional artists on our own campus.

ACTING Engage in intensive examination of classical theater texts, exploring material from the Greeks to Shakespeare to Chekhov, as well as studying a wide range of contemporary playwrights. Learn the technical skills necessary to bring heightened and poetic language to life on stage, while imbuing your character portrayals with a sense of dramatic truth. Become skilled at stage combat, audition techniques, dialects, voiceover, and on-camera audition techniques.

VISIT CORNISH TODAY Personal contact is an important aspect of our Admission process. We recommend that, if possible, you visit our campus and talk with an Admission Counselor. Your visit with us will allow you to meet one-onone with a professional who will be able to answer your questions about Cornish and offer useful insights about the audition process. The more we are able to learn about you and your artistic vision and ambition, the better we are able to provide you with the information you need to make the right educational choice for your future.

MUSICAL THEATER Take core acting-based skills classes as well as singing and dance. Study music theory including the basics of ear training, sight reading, group singing, rhythm, and harmony. Learn tap and jazz as well as other dance styles, musical theater performance, and audition techniques. Perform in productions of both original and established musical theater works.

ORIGINAL WORKS Original Works involves the study of directing, playwriting and production. Students create and perform their own material, collaborate in generative ensembles, and gain the practical skills needed to serve as artistic staff or create their own companies. You will be challenged to employ physical, improvisational, and dramaturgical methods to develop new work.
