FILM AND TELEVISION C.S. Lee ‘93 appeared in two episodes this past fall of the hit ABC comedy Fresh Off the Boat, and is filming a recurring role on the Starz thriller series Power, which will air later this year. Brendan Fraser ‘90 filmed the thriller Behind the Curtain of Night in the Czech Republic. Portland-based Michael Draper ‘04 appeared in recent episodes of Z Nation on Syfy and NBC’s Grimm. Michael will also be featured in 2016 in the independent crime drama Ladykiller. Alumna Nichole Elise ‘08 is putting her acting and physical technique training to work as a motion capture artist. She writes: Imagine you're a super hero fighting off every bad guy you come across and winning! Imagine you're a villain plotting your next move to take over a city... Whatever you're imagining; know that your movements as you act out these scenarios are inspiring animators to create astounding alternate realities to either watch or engage in as a player. Motion Capture is movements captured on infrared cameras so that animators can then design characters, objects, etc. to make video games and animated films. MoCap is probably the most fun I've ever had on a set. Putting on that suit just makes you "feel cool" and pretending to be so many things and different characters is pretty much like being a kid again...only this time getting paid for it! I have been fortunate and honored to have worked on several motion capture projects over past five years. So far, my credits include Video Games such as WWE Smackdown vs. Raw with THQ and an awesome game with Sony and Insomniac Animations that I can't spill the beans about as they are still in production. Training at Cornish not only enhanced and further developed my skills as an animated performer, but also prepped me for the business side of these arts. It is important to know how to use and control your instruments (body and voice) operating as an artist AND have a business mindset that coincides with creativity. I was fortunate to have studied under some of the finest professors during my 4 years at Cornish from ‘04-’08. To them, I have a multitude of respect and feel eternally grateful. I feel fortunate that I'm using my hard-earned degree in a world I didn't really know much about, but have since become excitingly immersed in!
10 Theater Highlights Winter 2016
Based in Denmark, Cornish alumnus Malte Joe Frid-Nielson ‘04 had a recurring role in the Danish family television show Juleønsket, and can be see in 2016 as Bo in the thriller Bakerman. Malte is also working in motion capture. He tells us: I have done a few days of motion capture work on one of IO-Interactive’s new games. The days essentially consisted of creating the physicalities for several characters and giving them a gestural library to work with when animating gameplay, as well as performing fully scripted scenes. I had assumed that I would be drawing heavily on the skills I learned in David Taft's mask classes, since the wire-frame model I was embodying was essentially faceless, but while the sense of physical specificity these classes engendered was certainly a giant asset, I quickly found that the director expected a level of demeanor usually associated with a more naturalistic playing style and I would need to bring a bigger bag of tools into use. All four years of acting classes came into play here. I found that the work required a funny balance between stage and camera levels of daily movement - small enough to function in a close shot, but without the benefit of facial expressions - necessitating a full embodiment of each choice at a micro level. I found that the tools provided by viewpoints training - specifically related to expressive and behavioral gesturewere extremely valuable in this situation. Since each day involved inventing, codifying, and performing several different characters, I was also very grateful for the work identifying and breaking down my own physical eccentricities in the first year at Cornish. I found that the motion capture suit is really acute at capturing slight shifts in the balance of weight in the body, and registers even the most minute attitude adjustments of the spine. As such, I was greatly helped by having an awareness of a bodily neutral to build each character from. Caety Sagoian ‘06 – in addition to her work as a cabaret artist and actress – is a popular voiceover artist. She’s best known as the voice of Bowser Jr. (right) and Baby Bowser in Super Mario Brothers. Listen for her in 2016 in Mario and Luigi: Paper Jam.
