Care Quality Commission

A warm welcome to our Spring/ Summer Newsletter Let’s hope the fine Easter weather continues and we can all warm up after a long cold winter! We have had a positive year continuing to provide high standards of care to both our patients and their families and we look forward to the challenges ahead. We are constantly reviewing the quality and standards of our care at both of our hospices to ensure the care and service we provide is second to none. In these difficult economic times raising funds is not easy and I am extremely grateful to all of you who continue to support us in any way that you can, without your generosity and kindness, we wouldn’t be Our New Website able to do what we do. Our new look website was launched in March With very best wishes Paul Brinsley Chief Executive of Cornwall Hospice Care

this year. The new site is much more user friendly and has facilities allowing supporters to contact us, donate directly to us and register for events online. Check it out:

Following recent care quality commission inspections within both hospices, the inspectors gave us excellent verbal feedback but we await official reports.

St Julia’s Hospice The staff at St Julia’s are looking forward to welcoming new full time and bank nurses to the team. Following the refurbishment the extra staff will enable the hospice to finally operate with all 10 beds open, plus 2 crossover beds.

Donate your time We rely heavily on volunteers to help us continue providing our services. Our volunteers help in different areas across the charity; working on the wards, in one of our 27 charity shops, at our warehouse, office administration and at our fundraising events. We are always looking for new volunteers to join our dedicated team, if you want to help please get in touch for more details. We currently have volunteer vacancies in our shops, our two hospices and our Income Generation department.

4 Make a Will and help raise vital funds Thank you to the solicitors of Cornwall for supporting Make A Will Week and helping raise funds for hospice care.

A lasting donation in memory of Margaret Brewer Mount Edgcumbe Hospice was delighted to receive two new riser recliner chairs last year. The chairs were kindly donated in memory of Margaret Brewer who was cared for by the hospice in August 2011. Margaret’s family wanted to put monies raised in her memory to good use and also say thank you to everyone at Cornwall Hospice Care. The chairs were immediately put into use to benefit the patients. The Brewer family originally planned to cover the cost of one chair, but through Knitting Corner

For Wills made during Make a Will Week, suggested donations are £75 for a single Will, £110 for a pair of husband and wife ‘Mirror’ Wills and £40 for a Codicil to update an existing Will. Your donation can be whatever you can afford or wish to give.

The cheque was handed over by Mrs Tompkins, who had known Mrs Robinson for more than 25 years and knew of her support for the hospice. Mrs Tompkins said “My dear friend had said how much she wished to support St Julia’s as a much-needed local charity and I always

knew that she planned to do this with a gift left in her Will. She knew how important the work of the hospice is to our local community and how the majority of funds needed to

run the hospices have to be raised by the charity. She would be so pleased to know what a difference her gift is going to make to the people of this part of Cornwall.”

Our resident Lymphoedema specialist Barbara Langford retired at the end of March after working for Cornwall Hospice Care for 19 years. Barbara started at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in 1994 as a Staff Nurse in the inpatient unit. When the then CEO, Alastair Adams, joined the charity in 1996 from Bristol Hospice, he wanted a Lymphoedema clinic opened. As Barbara had completed Lymphoedema training in 1995 at the Royal Marsden Hospital she was tasked with setting up the service.

What is Lymphoedema? The medical term for a swelling is ‘oedema’ and lymph indicates that it is the lymphatic system that is working more slowly. This causes fluid build up and lymphoedema occurs. Although it is impossible to cure lymphoedema, treatment aims to prevent future oedema forming and speed up the drainage of fluid from the tissues.

‘Over 2,500 patients have benefited from the Cornwall Hospice Care Lymphoedema service’ In 1998 Barbara set up the service at St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle, before it transferred to St Julia’s Hospice after it opened in 1999. Patient numbers continued to expand to approx 300 over the two sites, with Barbara running clinics on both sites weekly. ‘During my time over 2,500 patients have benefited from the Cornwall Hospice Care Lymphoedema service.’ In 2012 this workload generated over 2,000 clinical appointments.

Karen Shaw, Barbara Langford & Helen Treleaven

Our Lymphoedema team will shortly be receiving a new Lymph Assist Machine thanks to the fundraising efforts of Karen Shaw. Karen, who is currentl y receiving Lymphoedema treatment at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice, set out to raise the £3000 needed for the new machine as a way of saying thank you for the treatment she has received and to enable more patients to benefit from the treatment. In the space of a couple of months she not only reached her target but exceeded it by over £1000. The extra money will be spent on the continued training of two Lymphoedema nurses, Helen Treleaven & Terri Lightfoo t, who have succeeded Barbara Langford who retired in March.

‘We enjoy a close working relationship with Royal Cornwall Hospital’s Consultant Surgeons and Oncologists’ Barbara said. In 2000 Barbara was invited to Taiwan to introduce lymphoedema therapy to their five hospices. In 2001 she presented a lymphoedema paper at Japan’s first International Cancer Nursing Conference in Tokyo. Barbara has served as South West regional representative for the British Lymphology Society (BLS), presented at BLS national conferences and played an active role in the South West region. In September 2010 when Barabra announced she would be retiring this year succession planning commenced. Helen Treleaven at Mount Edgcumbe Hospice and Terri Lightfoot at St Julia’s Hospice, who were both Staff Nurses on the in-patient units, joined the team as Lymphoedema Development Nurses. They embarked on Glasgow University’s Graduate Diploma in Specialist Lymphoedema Management, which they will complete in April 2013. ‘It has been very satisfying mentoring Helen and Terri and watching them progress to Clinical Nurse Specialist level. They are now looking forward to continuing to provide Gold Standard care, and embrace

The Trustees, management, staff and volunteers wish Barbara a wonderful retirement and praised her professionalism, selflessness in her pursuit of best practice leading in Lymphoedema service development and leaving a legacy for the future of an excellent service which will be continued by Helen and Terri. Patients have sent in many letters of thanks and Barbara will continue to mentor the new Clinical Nurse Specialists during their first year of running the clinics within Mount Edgcumbe Hospice & St. Julia's Hospice.

7

When asked about her time with us, Barbara said: ‘Managing the Lymphoedema Service has been enormously satisfying as we are rehabilitating people to live as independently as possible with their lymphoedema on a daily basis. I have always regarded the role as one of the best in the nursing profession. I remember saying that to Dr Deborah Stevens once, who promptly told me "You must be in the right job then!" Over the past two and a half years it has been very rewarding to mentor Helen and Terri through their Graduate Diploma to achieve their Clinical Nurse Specialist status’ developments as they occur.’ ‘We are indebted to the James Tudor Foundation and Mrs Karen Shaw for their generous contributions towards Helen and Terri’s training costs, which has involved numerous trips to Glasgow for the taught element of the programme. You may ask why Glasgow? It is the only university running a degree level course at this time!’ said Barbara.

Reflections...

When someone you love becomes a memory, the memory becomes a treasure...

This event gives people the chance to spend an hour on a peaceful cruise along the River Fal to remember a loved one by scattering petals from the boat as a symbol of remembrance, and to relive and cherish the many happy memories of their lives.

Reflection Petals The name of each person being remembered will be attached to a bag containing petals to scatter. If you are joining us on the Reflections Trip, you will receive your petals when you board the ferry. Alternatively the petals will be sent to you in the post.

Reflections Trip The Reflections Trip will take place on the evening of Sunday 9th June on board a ferry supplied by Cornwall Ferries Ltd and will depart from the Prince of Wales Pier in Falmouth. The trip will last for approximately 45 minutes, along the River Fal, where there will be an opportunity to scatter petals into the water. There are limited spaces available on the trip. If there is a high demand there will be three trips on the evening with the first starting at 5pm. Once we have received completed forms we will send confirmation to you with the departure time of your Reflections Trip and the details that will be on the bag of petals.
