LOCAL FIREFIGHTERS

Why did you join: I joined following an experience with a large fire loss and knew I wanted to assist the community and help others so they do not experience the same. What’s your favorite tool: The Rescue truck would be my favorite tool with the department because it houses a multitude of different tools.

Dave Robertson Favorite Public outreach: When the fire department receives young (Fire Chief) visitors, by surprise or planned!

Years of Service: 27 What’s your favorite part of being a firefighter: The capability and opportunity to help others in their time of need.

Why did you join: My initial thought was because I was fascinated by the ‘big toys’, like the fire trucks and extrication tools! However, I truly wanted to join to give back and serve the community where I live. What’s your favorite tool: the Pumper Truck! Favorite Public outreach: Visiting the schools to show kids the trucks

James Walker and equipment we use for various (Deputy Fire Chief) calls.

Years of Service: 17 What’s your favorite part of being a firefighter: I have the opportunity to watch the growth in leadership and progress the firefighters are making after every training and every call. Even more than that, would be the moment when, as a firefighter, you receive the ‘Thank you’ at the end of a call, regardless how much loss. Why did you join: I felt the need to help my community, my dad had done it for 15 years before me and I wanted to continue to give back to South Glengarry. What’s your favorite tool: Extrication Tools (Jaws of life) Public outreach: Bringing the fire trucks to any public event and have Veronique Brunet the opportunity to educate the kids and adults who are fascinated by the (Firefighter) equipment (and let them play with

Years of Service: 4 the truck sirens). What’s your favorite part of being a firefighter: That I have the chance to help someone during their worst day by giving them all my attention and energy to hopefully make it just a bit better.

Why did you join: I joined right out of fire college, and moved to South Glengarry to be on the department because there is no greater honour in the world then having a stranger trust you in their worst moments. What’s your favorite tool: Halligan Bar, it is a multipurpose tool that can assist you in almost any task. Ryan MacDonald Public outreach: Any public event; when we roll up and see the kids (Firefighter) faces, they see us as role models.

Years of Service: 6 What’s your favorite part of being a firefighter: The feeling when we are helping individuals in the community during an incident, big or small, it is a great sense of reward.

Trim the Tree with Fire Safety

• When choosing a real tree, pick one that is freshly cut: Needles should NOT fall off when touched. • Make a fresh cut five centimetres (two inches) off the base of the trunk before placing the tree in the stand. • Add water to the tree stand every day • Make sure the tree is at least one metre (three feet) away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights. • Discard the tree when it dries out and large amounts of needles begin to fall off.
