A Taste for Everyone: by Brooke Clifford October is upon us and the Coronado community will be seeing a lot of the women of the Coronado Junior Woman’s Club (CJWC) in action. At the end of the month, brightly colored Halloween paintings will decorate shop windows, thanks to the CJWC. (Years ago I was one of those painters.) (I have fond memories of painting Halloween windows.) But first up is the CJWC sponsored A Taste of Coronado, a one night event that brings the community together to try out many of the tasty dishes served by local restaurants. In exchange for a fun evening out, the money raised goes to many of the philanthropic organizations CJWC supports. Jessica Cunningham is one member of the group who’s been involved with the

Page 8

Coronado Magazine - October

Food, Friends and Philanthropy Club since 2013 when she saw a Facebook post inviting others to join. “It was the perfect amount of obligation and commitment at the time, and I wanted to give back to the community, having young kids [here], and that’s exactly what Junior Women’s Club does.” The CJWC is a philanthropic organization whose members have striven to come together and benefit the community around them for 58 years now. Through monthly meetings that run August through May, this group of women plan and run fundraisers and community events that go towards scholarships, local charity organizations and causes, and more, all the while

maintaining an incredible social aspect to the club. Among the community events the CJWC organizes are the annual Halloween Window Painting, Coronado Flower Show, and the upcoming A Taste of Coronado. It’s a wonderful opportunity for women in area (the Club is not exclusive to Coronado residents) to get to know their peers. On top of monthly meetings, the group regularly plans outings that are just for fun and the Club has facilitated many lifelong friendships over the years. Five years later after joining, Jessica is now the first vice president and parliamentarian of the Coronado Junior Women’s Club, and this

is her fourth year acting as the chair of the committee for the Taste of Coronado fundraiser. “It’s the number one revenue generator for the Club each year which goes to donating back to the community, and it’s an all-year process starting with getting permits in February, working with the restaurants, and meeting deadlines up until now. Each year we have a goal [raising money] and we always want to beat that goal.” On Wednesday, Oct. 10, the Ninth Annual Taste of Coronado promises the same great experience attendees have come to expect, with over 25 venues participating. In addition to a lot of returning favorites, there will be even more delicious food to sample this October with some newcomers joining in as well. “Fonda Don Diego is new this year, which is down on First; the Famous Mexican Village that just opened a couple of weeks ago; El Roys which used to be Candelas – so we’ll have a lot of new Mexican restaurants!” said Jessica. Page 10

Coronado Magazine - October

Gelato Paradiso will also be one of the new venues attendees can enjoy a sweet treat from this year. While A Taste of Coronado is first and foremost a foodie experience, there are other aspects of the event guests can look forward to as well, including head and hand massages from Aveda Bliss Salon in Coronado and a hydration station from Coronado Club Fitness. Trolleys are also available throughout the evening to take attendees around the island to the different participating venues, and they’re not to be missed. “The last two years I remember being on the trolley and just asking [my group], ‘do

you want to take another loop?’ because the trolley drivers are fun and so energetic, too,” said Jessica. “We request them every year!” A Taste of Coronado is now in its ninth year running and each year the CJWC dedicates all proceeds to a charitable organization with ties to Coronado or San Diego. This year beneficiaries of the event include Monarch School of San Diego, a school from kindergarten to high school for homeless children and A Walk On Water, which is a surf therapy organization that puts on events for children and families with special needs or disability. “The proceeds that we’re donating to [A Walk on Water], they’re actually going to be hosting an event here in Coronado early next year, which will be open to anyone interested in attending,” said Jessica. Representatives of both have been invited to attend A Taste of Coronado and will be identifiable by their organization’s shirts. Guests are welcomed and encouraged to engage with them to learn more about each.

Members of the CJWC will be checking guests in, so be sure to say hello and ask about the charities and about their club in general, as well as what not to miss throughout the evening! “Everyone is welcome. There are a lot of people we’ve seen use it as a ladies night out and all the moms go out and do it. Or [it’s] an awesome date night and then there’s also families that go.” Flexibility is offered for families as well to suite their individual needs. Jessica explains, “One Tasting Card serves one person, however you get so much food throughout the event that we’re not frowning upon say, two adults and a child getting two cards to share or two kids sharing a card.” Each card is good for one portion or sample at every venue. Around 800 people are expected to attend A Taste of Coronado, and tickets are on sale now for $45. Depending on availability, tickets can be purchased on the day of the event, Oct. 10, for $50; however it is recommended you purchase prior to the

event to guarantee your spot. Over the years A Taste of Coronado has become a well-loved community occasion, bringing together the town and inviting the larger community and beyond to discover Coronado. Out of towners can even get packaged deals to stay in Coronado and attend. “Our goal is to bring people outside of Coronado over the bridge to get a taste of the island. For locals we have our favorites spots but then you go to the Taste and can find new favorite spots.”

You can learn more about Taste of Coronado and get your tickets today online at https:// www.atasteofcoronado.com/tickets or at one of three locations around Coronado: Glorietta Bay Inn, Coronado Fitness Club, and Be Polished. For more information about the CJWC, how to become a member, or other events the organization has planned this year, visit https://www. coronadojuniorwomans.org/ or find them on Facebook. When McP’s opened in 1982, the little Irish pub was a novelty. Today, still under original ownership, it is a respected member of the restaurant community, McP’s is one of the most popular restaurants on the island and one of the oldest. McP’s was the brainchild of former Navy SEAL Greg McPartlin. He said, “It was always my dream to create a restaurant where my SEAL Team friends could feel comfortable - someplace the community could also enjoy as their own”. And Greg’s dream has done more than come true, McPs has become a has become a place to gather, enjoy great food and create many, many memories. Locals, visitors, our men and women in uniform, and even furry friends all come to McPs because it is more than just a local pub, it’s a second home. If you’re looking for a place to relax, celebrate, hear great music, meet incredible people, you can find it at McP’s.

What’s in Season?

The Ultimate Health Food -

Carrots

This colorful root vegetable with the mild, sweet flavor has a colorful history. What began as a predominantly dark purple carrot, with a few red, yellow and white carrots here and there, is now dominantly orange in color. We can thank the Dutch growers of the 16th and 17th centuries who domesticated the carrot by cultivating the red and yellow varieties into the orange one we find today. Some say this was a tribute to William of Orange who led the way to Dutch independence. But in reality, the color of a carrot is determined by its carotenoids. Orange is a result of high amounts of beta carotene, red has high amounts of lycopene, purple is high in anthocyanin and

yellow has considerable amounts of lutein. The white carrot lacks pigmentation, but it still has beneficial properties, as do carrots of all colors with vitamins A, C, K and B6, fiber, niacin, potassium, calcium, folate, zinc and iron. A healthy snack, indeed.

Both are good, just know what you’re buying. To store carrots, cut green tops off and put in an airtight plastic bag in the coldest, most humid part of the refrigerator. Do not wash first, any moisture in the bag can cause spoilage. A second way to store carrots is to remove green tops and then place in a plastic airtight container, completely covered, in a cold water bath, changing the water every 4-5 days. Either way, they should be good for up to a month.

Carrots are versatile; they can be eaten raw, steamed, boiled or roasted. Raw and steamed offer the highest nutrient content. Executive Chef Andrew Kedziora chats with Sous Chef Ryan Ahrens. The bread served at Stake is in fact made on site. What does he like about the restaurant? “I like everything from sourcing of the products to meats to seafood and cheeses. I seek small farms, small producers, the best of the best and highlight them regularly,” he explained. With an average of 12 hour days spent working, Kedziora, who lives in South Park, likes to prepare something quick at home that he can pair with chicken. “I like to make pickles and preserve them, also lemons and citrus. I like making pizza, make my own dough - the pizza I made back then is different than today’s,” he said. What would he order from the menu? “Oysters. We get fresh oysters everyday, crab cocktail or lobster cocktail for appetizers. Our seafood here is just as good as the steak. “We have high end steaks. When you talk meats, the amount of different cuts can’t come close [to other places]. We have Japanese beef which is A5 grade, the best of the best, some domestic, some Australian. We have so many different choices. Every time you come you can get something different and be wowed,” he said. “A lot of regulars come here to eat and customers are welcome to new and different cuts. We are fine tuning it each year, tweaking it a little more. TK gets a lot of products from local farms and picks up whatever is in season from local farms like apples, tomatoes and butter from places like Stehly Farm, Sage Mountain Farm - whatever we can get that is local,” he said.

Kedziora is impressed with the staff at Stake. “You spend a lot of time with the people you work with, the kitchen team, the professional staff at the front of the house, people you like to be friends with,” he said. Being a chef is something he never thought he would do. “I wanted to join the military [growing up] but a restaurant is little like that. There is a structure, there are ranks,” he said. Kedziora loves the restaurant. “Everything in this restaurant is custom design by David [Spatafore.] Everything is down to the details like the onyx wall, the custom woodwork done by a local, everything is cool,” he said. Kedziora can talk about the restaurant for hours. “I feel I just scratched the surface…we have some of the best wines, half of the front of the house are sommeliers. The entire staff is well versed in wine… We not only have high end steaks and seafood, we’ve wines to match them. It’s the whole package,” he explained. On his time off, Kedziora likes to play ice hockey, something he has done since high school. “I have to balance it out. I play with a group of guys two to three times a week,” said Kedziora. Another thing he enjoys is reading bios of chefs and cookbooks. Despite the fact that he is always surrounded by food, he enjoys going out to eat. “I love the food scene in San Diego. It’s great and is getting better. We have a lot of options… Asian, Mexican … I like Japanese food, the simplicity, the flavors,” he said.

Recent Finds in Interior Design

By Jessica Tompane of J Hill Interiors As interior designers, we are lucky to have the privilege of seeing all latest products for furniture, fabrics, lighting, appliances, renovation materials and dÊcor. We have our vendors and manufacturer sale reps show us their latest goods on a weekly basis! It’s one thing to see new and beautiful products, but it’s another thing for a client or yourself to use them. I love it when we find a great product and can recommend it to our clients, family and friends. Here are just a few of our favorite products we have used personally or installed for clients in the year 2018:

Coronado Magazine - October

Page 51

INTERIOR DESIGN Kohler Prolific Sink: We sourced and procured this for a Coronado Cays client and liked it so much that I bought it for my personal home. I highly recommend this for cooking aficionados, those who like a tidy kitchen and/or for families who are very busy and need max functionality from a sink. It comes with a bamboo cutting board, two multipurpose grated racks, colander, and wash bin. You can remove, add, slide and stack all these components. I like it because you no longer need a countertop drying rack, you can cut food inside the sink on the cutting board, drain food in the sink and can stack dirty dishes while still having substantial space in the sink. List price: $1,299. Available at Fergusons, Pirch or online.

Arizona Tile Themar Collection: There is nothing like real stone and real marble. However, more and more clients love the look of marble, but are hesitant because of the maintenance and porous natural of the stone. If you can’t bring yourself to buy real marble for a bathroom or kitchen, this is a great alternative. This may be a great fit if you are a young family, renting your second home for part of the year and/or know you will not maintain the marble properly. The Themar collection is priced extremely well and looks authentic. They have five different types of tile that represent the main families of real marble stone. All tiles come in honed or polished and have a few different stocked sizes and trim pieces. There are many faux marble tiles out there, but in my opinion, these are some of the best for the price point. Prices vary per piece and/or square foot. Available at: Arizona Tile; Morena Blvd or Miramar Road

Kravet Upholstery Furniture: It is difficult to find a reliable upholstery resource, however, the past three to four years, we have been specifying Kravet furnishings as often as possible. The price point is on the higher end, however, if it is within a client’s budget, we try and source their furnishings. The quality is unmatched. Made on the East Coast, eight-way hand tied springs, a plethora of quality fill options, hundreds of frame selections, endless fabric options that are graded in for free, Teflon/ stain resistant options for all their fabrics and any piece can be almost fully customized. I have gone back to clients’ homes years after the initial installation, and the upholstery pieces look new, even with children and pets. Moreover, Kravet has been a family-owned company for over 100 years and it shows in how they are able to resolve challenges, work hard to meet a deadline or accommodate a very specialized piece for clients when needed. Price points: Mid to High-End. Available through: J Hill Interiors; To the design trade only

Visual Comfort Lighting: This resource would win the J Hill MVP if that was an actual award. Visual Comfort is a lighting wholesale manufacturer that we buy from direct. Circa lighting, an online dealer, sells their products as well as hundreds of other dealers including ourselves. We love this manufacturer because their lighting is designed by a dozen of the most talented designers including Barbara Barry, Kelly Wearstler and Thomas O’Brien to just name a few. Most of their lines come in multiple types of fixtures and finishes. We sometimes will outfit an entire home in Visual Comfort if the client wants a very uniform aesthetic. I also love their new Kate Spade line. All her lighting designs are so youthful and fun. Why not throw an unexpected lamp or sconce in a room? Price point: Mid to High-End. Available through: J Hill Interiors, Circa Lighting and other online dealers Page 54

Coronado Magazine - October

INTERIOR DESIGN Monte Carlo Maverick Fan: This fan is uniquely aesthetic and can move some air! The fans are at a decent price point, graded for indoor and outdoor use, come in multiple finishes and a few different diameter sizes. It’s surprising how challenging it can be to find a fan collection that comes in numerous sizes, can be outdoor grade and also offers finish selections. This is a common need in Coronado with the implied indoor/outdoor living lifestyle. We just installed these fans and bought one more for a Coronado client! Retail Price: $550 - $650. Available at Fergusons, other local fan dealers or online

San Diego Hardware: We used to buy most of our cabinet hardware, bathroom accessories and door hardware online, but as soon as I used San Diego Hardware, those online shopping days were over. For a recent new construction project, I picked out all the cabinet hardware, interior door hardware, garage hardware, mail box, flag holder; you name it, in about 1.5 hours when visiting their showroom. Not only that, but your savings online is trivial compared to SD Hardware’s prices, you don’t get to see it in person when buying it online, and the sales representative at SD Hardware was so incredibly helpful and efficient. She helped guide me per the budget allowances I had and when we placed the order, she added all the detailed components that would have been a pain to specify online like garage dead bolts, Dutch door components, door stoppers, etc. Price points: Very economical to luxury hardware. San Diego Hardware: 5710 Kearny Villa Rd suite a, San Diego, CA 92123. Jessica Tompane is the principal and owner of J Hill Interiors, Inc. Coronado Magazine - October

PARENTING

Some Like It Hot: Making Date Night a Priority by Hattie Foote

What does date night look like to you and your spouse? Mine is a private dinner on a secluded beach, with fireworks and champagne and an envelope to the luxury fantasy suite...

Coronado Magazine - October

Page 59

PARENTING

...Ok, well actually its more like me watching this happen on The Bachelor as I try and drink my wine before 9 o’clock as my husbands dozes off on the couch. The glamorous days of parenthood, am I right? What seems like a lifetime ago, I was watching Oprah. The episode was more or less about how your spouse should come before your kids, because you are better parents if your are on the same page, team, etc. At the time I was in total agreement, I knew when I had a family I would follow this way of parenting. Now here I am, four and a half years into mom-life and while I still agree with the basic idea of the message, lets just say it is way easier said than done. There are months that go by sometimes and I’m like holy moly we need to connect and have some alone time. You can always find a reason not to do it. Money, babysitter, pure exhaustion, but if there is a will there is a way. And we live in Coronado people! It takes a village raising your children, and date night is included in that phrase. Let me share some of my experiences. We are super lucky to live just over the bridge from some awesome date night spots in San Diego. However, its rare we leave the island when we can walk to so many amazing places. When we are feeling fancy, Stake happy hour is a must. The oysters, drinks, and view are to die for.

Page 60

Coronado Magazine - October

And you know what they say about oysters (wink wink)! Leroys is probably our number one go to because my husband knows that their jalapeño margaritas and burgers are the way to my heart. I will say we always run into people we know there, so sometimes it can turn into a big group date which can be fun too! Our first night out after having our second baby, I slapped on my stretch pants and I went and ate nine months’ worth of Saiko Sushi that I had missed. OK, so I’m sure this is thrilling reading about my favorite foods, I’ll get back on track. You don’t always have to go spend a bunch of money to have a romantic night out. Sometimes we just just stop at Boneys or grab take out and go down to bay, beach, or a park. I’m telling you nothing says romance like sharing a California burrito from Nite and Day. But that is a risky move, don’t do that until you are in a deep, committed relationship.

We recently ordered a charcuterie board from Scratch Gourmet, a local catering company and took it down for a beach bonfire and it was so perfect. Sometimes you just need to think outside the box. There are times we only have an hour to make something work. Shoot, it can be as simple as taking a walk or going to the grocery store, just make it a priority! Which brings us to the subject of babysitters. Full disclosure, my mom lives five blocks away and yes I am very aware of how lucky I am. But I have had to get babysitters and I know how quickly that cost adds up, sometimes its more than the actual date! Coronado has so many responsible, qualified sitters, so when you find someone your kids and you are comfortable with, the peace of mind is worth it. A cost effective alternative is swapping with friends! This Friday, I will take your kids, next Friday you take mine! Talk to other parents at school and offer, who knows you even make new friends this way! It definitely a win win situation. If all else fails, put a movie on for the kids, and find a quiet spot in your house so you can have an adult conversation and laugh. We are in a crazy season of our lives. I always try and remind myself that one day in the not so distant future, the house will be too quite and we can have all the alone time we want. And we will be sad about it. The balancing act of parenthood is tough. Nobody has it completely figured out, and if they say they do they are liars! Just kidding. Kinda. So keep that spark alive guys, it can be done! Even while wearing yoga pants and skipping a couple of showers, it can be done! Coronado Magazine - October

Fall Into Recherché by Jas Blynn

Fall is here and so are the rigorous daily routines we are enforcing into our lives. With this thought going forward, let’s look at our busy routines and think how we can find the time to blend some fabulous fashion into the season, and live in the moment of a Paris runway.

With event after event absorbing our time, taking a quick inspiration from runway trends and mixing them with your closet favorites seems to be the forefront of today’s fashion icons.

Starting with a major trend this Fall 2018 , wear your floral 60s print (large blossoms) button down novice blouse with your girlfriend jeans, yes, not boyfriend, and not mom jeans. Then polish off with heavy black soled buckled boots, and a tweed jacket. (Yes! Mix the floral with the tweed. No rules ladies; don’t you love it?)

Page 64

Coronado Magazine - October

Fashion FASHION

Yes, those animal prints are still in. Did they ever go out? I suggest you try to juxtapose them this time around. Mix that leopard with that zebra. If that is too much for you, try a bright color like hot pink or that fine fave autumn color, rust. Rust is everywhere. Find some high waisted pants (or black jeans), add a leopard print scarf and earrings to a basic white blouse and white booties. You are purrrrfect!

All items above from avenue Any logo, logo, logo you want to wear with your designer on it, wear it! This trend is a designer’s marketing miracle. A crossbody bag with that name, that belt buckle with that logo, and that T-shirt, with that sparkly name oozing ownership, is in! (Could you imagine folks wearing your name, or initials on your chest or belt buckle? The things we do to be in style!) Western wear is a big runway favorite this season. The bootie is still happening, and now add the western fringe and the white floral or striped button up. So hip and happening with dark denim, a western red belt, your booties, and your pale pink lipstick. You are the mom who is living that runway moment! Coronado Magazine - October

Page 65

Havana Nights coming up, Tropicana 2018 Gala Auction with nothing to wear, darling? Guess what? Black tie, ladies, does not mean just dresses anymore. Those satin, sexy, monochromatic pantsuits are oh so in! Double breasted jackets look great on any figure and with great chunky earrings, tall shoes, and shiny pink lipstick, you will stand out! If you are all about dresses....the LBD (little black dress) is perfection. How about adding color? Add one of those short floral sexy tie blouses on top of your LBD to vamp it up and add color. Feel free to add a shoe with a sexy heel. Maybe even a leopard heel. Another runway hit seen by many fashion houses is the leather dress. Vegan leather is huge! Wear a vegan leather dress and sparkle booties; it’s the rage of the season.

All above items from Paris & Me boutique The football fields in Coronado will never look the same with fashion forward looking ladies here. The sneaker is big big big; it looks just like your old dad’s did in the 90’s. (The fashion house that came out with this neon look on the runway is Balenciaga where a pair starts near $1000.) Sneakers can now officially be worn with every thing .... dresses and all! Whoo hoo! I’ll tail gate to that! Page 66

Coronado Magazine - October

FASHION

A fashion funny of fall 2018 is the “prairie look. Now mind you, the Boho Chic look was out last season to much dismay of many fashionistas. Now the prairie look is here. To me, it is the same! (Shh!) Prairie look from Studio 1220

The blouses have more ruffles, but still that faded floral look, with past old looking jeans, fringed out vests, booties, tattered looking belts. Pair with deep, faded brown boots. Cape-like vest and outfit from Miss Match Walking your own runway for the Taste of Coronado on Oct. 10. Be the most chic and fashionable out there wearing a cape. At all of the Fashion shows, especially Gucci, the cape was worn by every model with every outfit on the resort 2019 runway. Imagine a camel cape over a jewel toned multi colored swirl blouse. Or cashmere sweater set off by cuffed jeans and roughed up brown suede fringed pointed toed ankle boot. Have your jewel toned dangle earrings to catch the lights, and of course that dark plum lipstick to set off your gorgeous smile. You will be setting off all the latest gossip on your look! Coronado Magazine - October

Page 67

FASHION

With that being said, this clothing season, Fall 2018, was not dramatic, which is nice for a change, though very unusual for the industry. I’m thinking the designers were a bit confused and are realizing their audiences are savvy and chic, especially with the help of social media. So enjoy your pumpkin spice lattes with your logo inspired belt, your non ripped DL1961 jeans, your checkered button down blouse (half tucked in), rhinestone earrings, western boots, with your small designer bag on your other shoulder peeking through, you are rocking your island look as well as any Manhattan islander.....but you get sunshine and 70 degree days far more than they do! Instead of a Paris runway, hopefully you are inspired and can fall into fashion!

All Hallows’ Eve Apples by Denise Lyon

These bewitching glossy red and black apples are hard to resist and are sure to appeal to more than Snow White! No poison apples here - just beautifully crafted candy apples that will inspire your Halloween trick or treaters. 6 Red Delicious apples 3 cups sugar 1 cup water

1/2 cup light corn syrup

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon-flavored oil 1/4 tablespoon red food coloring

1/4 tablespoon black food-coloring So easy to do, too. These use a cinnamon-flavored oil I found at Boneys Bayside Market, but you could use any flavor that appeals to you.

Wash and pat dry apples, remove stems and skewer apples. If your skewer is blunt, sharpen with a utility knife to slice off one end at a diagonal angle. Working on a flat surface, firmly grip apple and push the skewer two-thirds of the way in. In a saucepan over high heat, with a candy thermometer attached, heat sugar, water an light corn syrup, stirring until sugar dissolves. Bring to a boil until mixture reaches 300º F. Remove from heat and stir in the cinnamon flavored-oil and food coloring. Now you’re ready for coating apples. You will want to make the red apples first, then black. For red apples: Dip apples,* one at a time, then transfer to a greased baking sheet and cool for about 10 minutes.

This is really easy as long as the apples are dry and the skewer is in securely.

For black apples: Add the black food coloring to the red syrup. Dip apples,* one at a time, transfer to a greased baking sheet and let cool, about 10 minutes.

I doubled the recipe on the candy mixture so I didn’t run out. The pot with the candy mixture can be reheated over low heat.

I used a measuring cup to pour the candy mixture over the apples and held the apples over the pot to catch the run off.

Recipe from Country Living, August 2012, with Matt Armendariz and Adam Pearson.

THEN & NOW

The Coronado Historical Association Presents What did the Woggle-bug say? by Vickie Stone, Registrar and Curator of Collections The fantastical world of Oz has been an inspiration to readers across the globe since “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” was first published in 1900. Coronado’s enchantment with Oz extends to the story’s creator, L. Frank Baum. It’s well known that Baum was a frequent Coronado visitor. Baum, a New York native who lived in Chicago, needed a respite from the bitter cold of the midwest and northeast. Coronado served as his winter escape from 1904 to 1910. For most of those visits, he and his family stayed at the Hotel del Coronado, but two of them were spent at the house now known as the “Wizard of Oz” house on Star Park Circle. It’s no surprise that for a man who created realms of fantasy, stories, and myths about his life are abundant. Here in Coronado, there is a popular story about how he designed the iconic crown chandeliers in the Del’s Crown Room. While this story is unsubstantiated, it’s easy for one to make connections between Baum’s whimsical ideas and Coronado’s own enchanting qualities. One of Baum’s lesser-known characters was supposedly inspired by an interaction with a child on Coronado’s beaches. H. M. Wogglebug, T.E. is a magnified and educated insect that appeared in the Oz books starting in 1904. In an introduction to a reprint of the 1905 Woggle-Bug Book, Douglas G. Greene explained the origins: “Coronado, California. A little girl showed him a fiddler crab and asked what it was. ‘A Woggle-Bug,’ Baum replied, using the first word that came to him. The name so delighted the child that Baum added the character to his book. In “The Marvelous Land of Oz” Baum explains that the WoggleBug had once been an ordinary insect, but he had hidden in a classroom and gained “excessive knowledge’’ thus he earned the initials ‘T. E.’ or Thoroughly Educated. One day the teacher discovered the WoggleBug and magnified him on a magic-lantern screen. The Woggle-Bug made his escape as ‘H. M.’ — Highly Magnified. The insect is a pompous creature given to using long words and dreadful puns.”

The Wizard of Oz house at 1101 Star Park. Coronado Historical Association Collection.

One popular offshoot of Baum’s stories was a newspaper comic featuring the Wogglebug. Readers were invited to participate in sponsored contests to solve riddles and create clever answers to the question “What did the Woggle-bug say?” It’s hard to imagine how a crab on the shores of Coronado transformed into a sophisticated bug at the center of comic contests, but Baum’s creative spirit made it happen. Beyond the character of the Woggle-bug, Coronado also inspired the settings for other stories by Baum. Under the pen name Edith Van Dyne, Baum wrote “Aunt Jane’s Nieces and Uncle John” in 1911, which centers around a family who travels from New York to California and stays at the Hotel del Coronado. It’s also speculated that Coronado is the setting of Baum’s little known poem, “Nelebel’s Fairyland.” He describes a sunset where that main character views from Coronado, “At her feet lay the beautiful bay, its wave-tips sparkling like millions of diamonds. And, while Nelebel gazed, a sun of golden red sank toward the rugged head of Loma and touched it with a caressing goodnight kiss.”

This Halloween, everyone 12 and under is invited to join the Coronado Historical Association for a Wizard of Oz themed “haunted museum,” complete with the wicked witch of the west, plenty of flying monkeys, and perhaps even a Woggle-bug. Follow the yellow brick road to find the Emerald City and escape the perils found in the museum along the way! The Haunted Museum will be on Oct. 26 and 27. Call 619-435-7242 for more information.

Home Grown Businesses:

Dr. Susan Popp and Dr. Natalie Bailey by Linda L. Austin

Too much togetherness with family members in a business situation is sometimes difficult, but Dr. Suzanne Popp and daughter Dr. Natalie Bailey seem to have adapted to the business relationship quite well. At work they both use the formal titles to establish the professional atmosphere, except when the engrained habit of “Mom” and “Natalie” slip out. Bailey describes the work place as fun and challenging while she is learning how to run a business and mesh the strict procedures learned in dental school with the reality of working with patients. In dental school, work is individual; however, an office with multiple doctors requires the team approach. This team has established a code sentence when either one has a question: “Can you give me more information?” The code verbiage from mom in Bailey’s childhood was “hippopotamus,” sometimes “1-2-3,” when behavior needed correcting quickly. Both dentists agree that one of the benefits of living and working in Coronado is the ease of building relationships with patients. Having lived here since 1989, Popp knows many of the residents on both a personal and professional level, as well as the intertwining of their families. The connections between so many townspeople are not only interesting but emit a comforting small-town feel. Those connections spill over into the office visits, causing patients to evolve into friends or at least close acquaintances. A dental visit is rarely confined to the mouth topics but involves conversations about family, travels, plumbing, and other topics of interest to both. Page 80

At sixteen, Popp’s first choice for a profession was being a pilot. Flying became too expensive to pursue but being in health care was another interest. After considering veterinarian or pediatrician, she migrated to the dental field because of an awful childhood dentist. Abrasive to everyone, he had a hard time even keeping an office staff or assistant. When she and her two siblings went to see him, various rooms were unsupervised, so Popp would wander into the lab which she found fascinating. She knew that her dentist was not what a good dentist should be. Her grandmother had a mail-order dental business which has been in the family for sixty years and now belongs to Popp. The business has only two products but sells them internationally. Word of mouth is the only advertising. A temporary job in Coronado introduced her to our small town, which appeared like a movie set from the bridge. Popp’s practice, Advanced Cosmetic Dentistry, opened in 1990 at 1010 Eighth Street. She reared her daughter Natalie and son George, a mechanical engineer here.

Bailey had the opposite impetus to becoming a dentist. In high school, she worked in her mom’s office and saw the positive effect dental work and the right attitude can make on a person. Residents praised her mom with stories of kindness and consideration, treating patients more like friends than clients. Bailey decided she wanted something that meant so much to people. She wanted to meet people and make them happier. Her interest in science and art combined nicely into cosmetic dental work. She enjoys being a business woman as well as a practitioner. Bailey graduated from Coronado High School in 2011. She has happy memories of being a member of ASB her junior and

senior years. The pep rallies, powder puff bowl, Friday night dances after the games, the homecoming dance held at the zoo, painting the rock and protecting it created the school spirit prevalent at CHS. After graduation, Bailey headed to her mom’s alma mater, Marquette University in Wisconsin, where she, also, graduated from Marquette University School of Dentistry. Even though she knew she would eventually return to Coronado, she wanted the adventure of living somewhere else. She enjoyed being there and even considered remaining in Wisconsin awhile. The returning winters each year, however, were the deciding factor not to delay the move. Baily returned in 2018 to join Popp as a mother/daughter team. Outdoor activities occupy Bailey’s offduty time, especially hanging out at Sting Ray Point. In August she accompanied her dad on a four-day back packing hike in the High Sierras. Hiking the Grand Canyon and Cold’s Mountain, scuba diving, sailing and kayaking with George are other favorite

activities. While she has shelved painting for a while, she hopes to soon resume that hobby. She has paintings of landscapes and animals to her credit. The two doctors share many interests. Like Bailey, Popp has an artistic bent, which surfaces in welding. She created a horse’s head which she jokes cost $20 in sheet metal and $400 to mail to a friend in Dubai. A love of travel is another shared interest. The flexibility that having your own business allows makes trips possible. A two-week trip to Thailand was a recent vacation for Bailey, but Italy, Bali, Alaska, the Galapagos Island, and Morocco have been on the docket. Popp recently marked off her 60th country. Both join in a love of cooking, but mom takes the lead, reducing Bailey to the assistant. One of Bailey’s favorite dishes to create is red curry which she made even before the Thailand trip. When the two children left home, Popp compiled a personal cookbook of favorite recipes and photos for them. “Cooked with Love at

823,” also, includes nutrition hints, cooking terms, and suggestions for stocking basic kitchen tools and the pantry. In the back of the book, she even suggests where to shop and what to buy in each place. A copy rests in the dental office’s reception area and is often requested by patients. Leisure time for Popp involves humanitarian work through the Coronado Rotary Club where she was one of the first female members and the first female president, 1999-2000. Travels to Uganda and Swaziland to deliver school equipment and to South Africa with kerosene stoves lead to the formation of the Sue Project, a playful name for four Sues who joined together to collect money for sanitary napkins and supplies for 150 girls in Ethiopia. Anyone can become a Sue for the day by donating $10. Finding the perfect balance between work, pleasure and philanthropy, with family and friends mixed in the blend, seems a sure thing for Popp and Bailey. With a profession you enjoy, the ideal place to live, and opportunities to expand your interests and give back to the community, what could be better?
