HAPPENINGS ON THE ISLAND Fall is here and the holidays are just around the corner, which means the small town of Coronado is once again gearing up to celebrate an abundance of long-standing seasonal traditions. From bright parades to decadent turkey day dinners and ice skating by the sea, you’ll end up making some new holiday traditions of your own.

Thanksgiving at The Del and Loews (November 22) Start a new Thanksgiving tradition as you enjoy an elegant buffet dinner with all the trimmings at the Hotel del Coronado’s oceanfront Ballroom or Mistral at Loews Coronado Bay Resort, offering an elegant pre-fixe menu of traditional Thanksgiving favorites influenced by Master French Chef Patrick Ponsaty. Don’t worry, we’ll take care of the dishes!

Skating by the Sea (November 21 – January 3) Lace up your skates for the annual outdoor ice skating rink at the Hotel del Coronado overlooking Coronado Beach and the Pacific Ocean. The Del’s Windsor Lawn is transformed into a seaside winter wonderland, benefitting the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Buon Natale Gondola Cruise (December) Experience a holiday serenade from Santa as Loews Coronado Bay Resort presents its “Buon Natale” gondola cruise. In addition, guests of the resort will enjoy peppermint spa scrubs, carols and cocoa in the lobby, bayside marshmallow roasts, holiday movie nights and much more.

Coronado Beach has been honored with the title of “Number One Beach in America” in Dr. Beach’s 22nd Annual Top-10 Beach List. Located in front of the iconic Hotel del Coronado, this whitesand oasis runs for 1.5 miles and is popular among swimmers, surfers, sunbathers and beachcombers of all ages. Skimboarders and walkers also love to take advantage of the beach’s flat nature while families can appreciate the great team of lifeguards on staff as well as the ample opportunities to picnic for a day on the sand. Dr. Beach, aka Dr. Stephen P. Leatherman, is a coastal expert and professor at Florida International University and has been judging the nation’s top beaches since 1991. Fifty criteria are used to evaluate the quality of each beach; among them are water and sand quality, as well as safety and environmental management. So come experience this legendary sandy sanctuary for yourself this fall.

37 th Annual Coronado Christmas Parade and Open House (December 7 ) Get in the holiday spirit during this annual tradition. Frolic at Snow Mountain at the Coronado Ferry Landing (3 P.M.) while awaiting Santa’s arrival (3:20 P.M.). Stroll through Merchants Open House (5:30 – 9 P.M.) along Orange Avenue, and watch the colorful holiday parade (6 – 7 P.M.) followed by the traditional lighting of a 50-foot Christmas tree (7 P.M.) and free community concert in Rotary Park.

41 st San Diego Parade of Lights (December 9 and 16) Prepare to be amazed as more than 100 private boat owners decorate their boats with holiday lights and sail along the waters of San Diego Bay. The parade runs 5:30 – 9 P.M. and is followed by a dazzling fireworks show over the water. The Coronado Ferry Landing and Current resturant at Coronado Island Marriot Resort offers great views from the shore.

Then, the 35-year-old holiday tradition continues with an annual performance of Festival of Christmas. Coronado Playhouse Grab a seat in the 60-year-old Cabaret-style theatre overlooking Glorietta Bay for a hilarious rendition of The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas October 26 − December 2.
