Artist Story
Based in Portland, Oregon, Claudia embodies the detailed eye of a sculptor and the exact precision of a jeweler, cultivating her ability to create visual moments of joy. She’s mastered the alchemy of cyanotype prints to express her perspective, teasing out embedded details in flowers from her home garden. She brings several facets of her past to her print work. Claudia is a Sculptor, Painter, Porcelain artist, and Jeweler and previously has designed for museums, corporations, and art consultants. Additionally, her art has been shown in galleries throughout the USA. In 2008 she decided to pursue her dream of learning to paint in encaustic. By 2012, Claudia was teaching encaustic painting at Pacific Northwest College of Art. During this time, intrigued with the process of printing images in the sun without harmful chemicals, Claudia started incorporating cyanotypes into the backgrounds of her paintings.
Cyanotypes
Claudia’s images are created using the historic cyanotype photographic printing process that creates Prussian blue prints using coated paper and light. The cyanotype process was discovered by scientist and astronomer Sir John Herschel in 1842 who used the process to reproduce diagrams. Architects and engineers later picked up the process to produce copies of architectural drawings, which is where the term “blueprint” comes from.
Shortly after Herschel developed the cyanotype process, his botanist friend and photographer Anna Atkins, explored the process for illustrating plant specimens. Her detailed cyanotypes of her specimens led her to be considered the first female photographer.
During the pandemic, Claudia focused her interest on photographing flowers from her garden in the studio to create cyanotype prints. Claudia is now in her third year of this process, documenting the cycle of seasonal blooms that are constantly battling climate change. These images give both a contemporary and vintage feel while capturing a uniquely beautiful and mysterious look. Claudia’s process blends alchemy, nature, technology, artistic license, and pure timing. The beauty of her cyanotypes is further enhanced by printing on Japanese Sekishu paper.
