OUR RESIDENTS SAY IT BEST
ADAM & JO ANN SCHAUBER
Jo Ann Schauber was an accountant during her working days which led to her being all business pretty much all the time. “I was an accountant, I was inside four walls all day long,” Jo Ann, 82, said of her working days. “We didn’t do a lot of socializing and parties and such.” Take a look at her now. About to enter her third year living at Aston Gardens
At Pelican Pointe, Jo Ann is a wonderful hybrid of a force of nature and a social butterfly. She calls bingo for other residents, she volunteers to help run events, participates in lounge games every afternoon, and starts off her day by fixing all the plantation shutters in the dining room so they are all evenly open and facing the same direction. Perhaps even more importantly, she serves as an ambassador for new residents, giving them a taste of her sunny disposition as they make the transition to their new living arrangement. “As an ambassador, I tell them right from the start: Keep an open mind, try some new things, be open to meeting other people.” Jo Ann, who lives with her 84-year-old husband Adam, said, “People here want to be your best friend. There’s so much here to offer someone. You’re short-changing yourself if you don’t take advantage of what all they can offer.”

Born in Mississippi in the 1920s, 92-year-old Ben Hodges grew up in Memphis, Tennessee, but when he graduated high school there was really only one option to pursue ... his country had been brutally attacked months earlier at Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. “I was the nose gunner on a B-24 bomber,” said Ben, now a resident of Conservatory At Keller Town Center in Texas. “We were stationed Discovery Senior Living
in Italy, but we were bombing all across Europe during the war. We had some pretty tough times, but I did make it back.” Ben had lived in Memphis for more than 50 years. After he got out of the service following the culmination of World War II, he had gone to college at Mississippi State University, graduated, and worked briefly for a firm that built trailers before finding a home with Memphis’ municipal natural gas company. With no family left in Tennessee, Ben finally began listening to his daughter, a resident of nearby Southlake, Texas, when she initiated talks with him about moving to the Lone Star State, specifically to Conservatory At Keller Town Center. It was pretty much a big adjustment, you’re scaling way down. It’s a lot different, but it’s not bad because you have a lot of people and great food.” Ben, who is about to celebrate his one-year anniversa-
ry as a resident, says, “there’s people from just about every state in the Union, so there’s lots of friends and people you can talk to, and there’s always something to do.” “A lot of people play cards, and I play a little bit, but my game is pool. I’ve made a good friend here from South Dakota, and we play pool a lot. It’s a great way to relax and talk to other people, get to know them and learn about their lives.”

OUR RESIDENTS SAY IT BEST AL SACKS
In 2001, on his 80th birthday, Al Sacks became a pioneer. That was the day that he and his wife, Sylvia, moved into Aston Gardens At Parkland Commons, two of the very first residents of the new Discovery Senior Living community.
Fourteen years later, Al, now 94, is still there, and is still called a pioneer, one of just three residents to have called Aston Gardens home since the day it opened nearly a decade and a half ago. Al had been living in Florida for 15 years already by the time they moved to Aston Gardens. They had moved around the “Sunshine State” a bit after moving from brisk Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but wanted to change to a residence where they could enjoy life more and give some of their responsibilities to others.
“My wife decided that she didn’t want to cook anymore,” Al remembers with a laugh when he recollects the early days of the transition. “We went scouting around and looking for some place to live and one day we noticed this little office on the grounds here before this place was built.” “There are a lot of nice people that we have met and made friends with here,” Al said. “You kind of get to know everyone when you’ve been here a while, and Aston has been very cooperative in supporting the activities that I am a part of and that I enjoy.”

Born in Belgium, Suzanne was just three years old on May 10, 1940, when Germany attacked her country. The fighting lasted only 18 days. Belgium surrendered, and the Nazis were in charge for the next 4-1/2 years. But Suzanne and her family weren’t just Belgian, they were also Jewish, and by 1942, the Nazis had begun sending Belgian Jews to the camps, the ones that no one ever came back from. Discovery Senior Living
“I was one of the lucky ones, I didn’t go to the camps,” Suzanne, now 78 and a two-year resident of Conservatory At Wells Branch in Austin, TX, says. “If you know the story of Anne Frank, that’s the life we knew. We had to live in attics for 26 months. We had very good people who helped us and gave us false names and false papers.” Fast-forward nearly 70 years, and Suzanne again found herself in a situation where she was craving the feeling of a safe place to call home and people to help her get through a difficult time. In 2013, Suzanne’s husband of 53 years passed away, leaving her alone in their home in New Jersey. Suzanne’s son, an Austin resident, asked his mother to come live closer to him and his family. Proximity to family and things to do is one of the biggest draws about living at Conservatory At Wells Branch. Suzanne now has four grandchildren to dote on, and a new crop of
friends to spend time with enjoying Conservatory’s numerous activities and recreational events. “I like going to dinner with my friends here, and Conservatory schedules games and events, and there’s always something going on. We have concerts, we play games, and just yesterday, we had Discovery University, which comes once a month with a professor who gives talks.”

OUR RESIDENTS SAY IT BEST BILL LEE
Bill Lee has seen enough history and traveled enough of the world to give Forrest Gump a run for his money. How does such a man keep things interesting in his retirement years? Short answer? He’s done what he’s always done: find projects and goals that he’s passionate about, spend time with the people he cares about most, and live every day with vigor and drive.
The new year was barely a week old when the Blizzard of 1996 hit the United States’ East Coast, with the area around Washington D.C. getting between 13-17 inches in one 24-hour stretch, followed by another 15-25 inches less than 24 hours later, accompanied by lightning and 40 mile-per-hour winds. A second

To most of the residents of Conservatory At Plano, he’s Bill, the 82-year-old gentleman who lives with his wife, deals poker two nights a week and participates in social hours and special functions. But below the surface, he’s a 20-year Marine who served the country’s highest office in one of its darkest times - the grief-filled, emotionally charged days that followed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in November of 1963. Earlier that year, Bill had been assigned to the USMC Silent Drill Team as a commander, and had the unique duty of serving at The White House during state dinners and the arrival and departure of foreign dignitaries. In those 10 months, he saw Kennedy and his family up close and personal on multiple occasions, even holding John F. Kennedy Jr. on his lap once at Camp David while the President’s son played with the radio of a Jeep that Bill was sitting in while both awaited the arrival of the President by helicopter.
blizzard followed four days later, and residents from West Virginia to New York were shut in for days. Claire Smith was living in Annapolis, Maryland, back in the days of the blizzard, having retired from a lengthy, fascinating career with the US Postal Service. She remembers the storm, and its fallout, with decided clarity. “I was house-bound twice that year, once for 10 days, and once for four days,” Claire, a resident of Aston Gardens At Sun City Center, says. “The following spring, I was sitting outside with a neighbor and I said, ‘If I can find someone crazy enough to pay market value for this house, I’m selling it and moving to Florida.’ My neighbor said, ‘Are you serious?’ And when I said yes, he said ‘I’ll buy it.’ And he did.” “Sun City Center reminded me of Annapolis when I first lived there,” Claire said. “I bought a house there at first, then moved to Aston Gardens in 2012.”
“I was used to walking out the door of my house to go outside so it took me a while to adjust, but the team at Aston worked hard to make us happy, and they really spoil us,” Claire says. “The people are absolutely wonderful; the staff and the maintenance cannot be beat. And the young people who wait on us are the most marvelous people!”

“South Florida has over a half million senior citizens, if you laid them down end to end, they couldn’t get up.”
In 1979, Dinney Dinofer retired to Florida after a tremendously successful career booking and hosting events in New York City for conventions and corporations, representing several prominent hotels and caterers throughout Manhattan. A few months later he came to a startling realization. Retirement was horrifyingly dull.
– Dinney Dinofer
Dinney went on to work another 18 years in Florida until his wife fell ill with cancer in 1997. His last job, the retirement of Miami Dolphins’ head coach, Don Shula, was one of his biggest, an affair for 1,500 people at the Broward Convention Center for which he was hired personally by Dolphins and Florida Marlins’ owner, Wayne Huizenga. Even after the big party for the two-time Super Bowl champion, Shula was in the books, retirement wasn’t an option for the then-75year-old Dinney. And so with three-quarters of a century of living under his belt, he changed professions, and became a stand-up comedian, working rooms, and eventually retirement communities, including Aston Gardens At Parkland Commons, a community he has now proudly called home since August of 2014. “I worked here four or five times before I even moved in,” Dinney said. “When my second wife and I started talking about senior independent living, I investigated five different places of this kind, and the
primary reason for choosing Aston is that of all the five places, this was the only one where all the people were so friendly. Everyone spoke to you the minute you walked through the door; all the other places they were very cold and indifferent. That made this place my first selection.” “I can’t complain one bit about the life I’ve had,” he says. “It’s been a long winding path that has allowed me to know a lot of famous people and do a lot of amazing things.”

FLORIDA Known for its beautiful people, beautiful beaches, and more than 100 days of clear sunshine a year, it’s no wonder it was given the nickname the “Sunshine State.” A peninsula between the Gulf of Mexico, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Straits of Florida, it has the longest coastline in the contiguous United States, approximately 1,350 miles, and is the only state that borders both the Gulf of Mexico and the Atlantic Ocean. Much of the state is at or near sea level. The climate varies from subtropical in the north to tropical in the south. The American Alligator, American Crocodile, Florida Panther, and Manatee can be found in the Everglades National Park. By the 16th century, the earliest time for which there is a historical record, major Native American groups included the Apalachee (of the Florida Panhandle), the Timucua (of northern and central Florida), the Ais (of the central Atlantic coast), the Tocobaga (of the Tampa Bay area), the Calusa (of southwest Florida) and the Tequesta (of the southeastern coast). Since the first European contact was made in 1513 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León – who named it La Florida ([la flo’iða] “The Flowery”) – Florida was a challenge for the European colonial powers before it gained statehood in the United States in 1845. Florida has about 569,000 acres of citrus groves, 74 million citrus trees and produces about 65% of the total US citrus production in a year. This is a big part of the state’s economy and is delicious. Florida is one of the most popular retirement spots in the country, a full 17.3% of the state’s population is 65 years or older as of the 2010 US Census.
FLORIDA FUN FACTS • No matter where you are in Florida, you are never more than 60 miles from the ocean. • The state receives between 2,400 and 3,200 hours of sunshine each year. • Florida has more golf courses than any other state in the country (over 1300!). • Plant City, the Winter Strawberry Capital of the World, holds the Guinness record for the world’s largest strawberry shortcake. The 827 square-foot, 6,000 pound cake was made on Feb. 19, 1999 in McCall Park. • Venice is known as the “Shark Tooth Capital” of the World. •1 000 people move to Florida each day.

“Just an old sweet song keeps Georgia on my mind.”
– Stuart Gorrell and Hoagy Carmichael
Georgia was established in 1732, the last of the original Thirteen Colonies. Named after King George II of Great Britain, Georgia was the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution, on January 2, 1788. Georgia is known as the “Peach State” and the “Empire State of the South.” The northern part of the state is in the Blue Ridge Mountains, part of the Appalachian Mountains system. The Piedmont extends through the central part of the state from the foothills of the Blue Ridge to the Fall Line, where the rivers cascade down in elevation to the coastal plain of the southern part of the state. The highest point in Georgia is Brasstown Bald at 4,784 feet (1,458 m) above sea level. Georgia is famous for peanuts and pecans and the birthplace of Julia Roberts, Luke Bryan, Ray Charles and Gladys Knight. More notably, in 1886 John Pemberton developed Coca-Cola in Georgia. The first sales were at Jacob’s Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia, on May 8, 1886. Home of the 1996 Olympics, the stadium that was built to host various Olympic events was converted to Turner Field, the home of the Atlanta Braves. The Masters golf tournament, the first of the PGA tour’s four “majors”, is held annually the second weekend of April at the Augusta National Golf Club. The Atlanta Motor Speedway hosts the Dixie 500 NASCAR Cup Series stock car race and Road Atlanta the Petit Le Mans endurance sports car race.

I must say as to what I have seen of Texas it is the garden spot of the world. The best land and the best prospects for health I ever saw, and I do believe it is a fortune to any man to come here. There is a world of country here to settle.”

– Davy Crockett, Alamo defender, 1836
Times of Discovery
Texas was the 28th state in the United States of America admitted on December 29, 1845. It is the second largest state and most populous with an area of more than 268,800 square miles and 26.9 million residents. Texas is nicknamed the “Lone Star State” to signify Texas as a former independent republic, and as a reminder of the state’s struggle for independence from Mexico. The “Lone Star” can be found on the Texas state flag and on the Texas state seal. The origin of the state name, Texas, is from the word, “Tejas”, which means ‘friends’ in the Caddo language. Although popularly associated with the Southwestern deserts, less than 10 percent of Texas’ land area is desert. Most of the population centers are located in areas of former prairies, grasslands, forests, and 360 miles of coastline. On January 10, 1901, the first major oil well in Texas, Spindletop, was found south of Beaumont. Other fields were later discovered nearby in East Texas, West Texas, and under the Gulf of Mexico. The resulting “oil boom” transformed Texas. Oil production eventually averaged three million barrels per day at its peak in 1972. Part of the state’s tradition of cowboys is derived from the massive cattle drives, which its ranchers organized in the nineteenth century to drive livestock to railroads and markets in Kansas, for shipment to the East. The first railroad to operate in Texas was the Buffalo Bayou, Brazos and Colorado Railway, opening in August 1853. The first railroad to enter Texas from the north, completed in 1872, was the Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad. With increasing railroad access, the ranchers did not have to take their livestock up to the Midwest, and shipped beef out from Texas. Texas has made a strong mark on national and international pop culture. The state is strongly associated with the image of the cowboy shown in westerns and in country western music. The internationally known slogan “Don’t Mess with Texas” began as an anti-littering advertisement. Since the campaign’s inception in 1986, the phrase has become “an identity statement, a declaration of Texas swagger.”
