Design UNL Process Book
Cortland Kerwin Interactive Design I
As an exercise in large-scale web development, you will work as a “class development team to design a communications portal for all design students at UNL. The primary goal for this site is to create a one stop source for (in the order of importance): jobs, internships, news, events, resources and ideally to foster a design community. A core concept we will be focusing on is UCD or user-centered design. User-centered design is a design philosophy that puts the user of a product, application or experience at the center of the design process. In UCD, a designer strives for a detailed understanding of the needs, wants and limitations of the people who will use the end product and then makes design choices that incorporate this understanding. UCD requires that designers not only analyze and foresee how users engage but also test their designs.

Group Wireframes Revised Wireframes Design Phase I Usability Testing Design Phase II - Final
My group was tasked with the internship wireframes. We started by creating a landing page that would be a starting off point and create a grid that we would go off of for the rest of the site. We wanted a consistency of a feature article that would have little sectioned articles that as you scrolled would show up. We then had different categories within internships such as, listings, testimonials, resources and company profiles.

For the revised wireframes we had to take the previous wireframes we had and expand on them and do the entire portal. I stayed with the same setup as the previous wireframes and just made small edits and made the entire portal consistent with the current design that I had.

When it came to the design phase I had an internal breakthrough and idea of what I personally wanted the portal to do and look like. I designed it as a site that I would enjoy using and that I felt was visually appealing. I created a simple grid system made up of five columns, where the boxes and rectangles could go in and out of each column and make all kinds of different sizes where the information would reside. Overall, I wanted a simple and clean design that was user friendly and fun to use.
Design Phase I
Our next step was to create a usability test and ask five different people to take a survey based on the portal over and then specific questions based on our personal designs. Results overall were pretty consistent. When it came to my design, most people found it user friendly and visually appealing. They found the navigation overall easy to use but had made suggestions that there needed to be a home button and people would have liked to see what an inside page would look like.
Usability Testing
For my final design I chose not to change a whole lot. I went in and took what I found in the usability test and made small edits. I created a home button and created a simple layout and sample for what an inside page could look like were this design a real thing in the future.
