City Gate Museum In Nice, France, there exist two primary rivers: the Paillon River, which flows through the city center and the Var River that makes up the western boarder of the Alpes-Côte d’Azur Municipality. The Paillon River is hardly noticed within the city due to the construction of Promenade des Anglais in 1820, which covers the entire river within the city perimeter. The Loop, which is proposed along the Var River, seeks to create a dichotomous dialog with the Paillon. Where the Promenade des Anglais covers and hides the water with landscape, The Loop proposes to entwine the landscape with the hardscape in order to emphasize the

historical agricultural significance of the Var Valley. The Loop will act as both the gateway to the Eco Valley Expansion occurring at the mouth of the Var and subsequently the city of Nice. The result of the project is a proposal for a new facility that both crosses the Var River and acts as a gateway from the Alpes of France into the new urban center.

Bury the Architecture The original program called for a crossing of the Var river. Due to the historically and economically important agriculture of the valley, the museum was pushed below grade and entries were distributed along its length in order to minimize the impact on the landscape. Three large objects were inserted into the middle of the underground program to call attention to the underground facility.

The Landscape In order to minimize the visible footprint of the project, the ground floor of the museum has been almost entirely dedicated to landscape. Each area of the landscape has functions dedicated to different program types. Root functions, such as farming occur only on the ground floor. The team desired to not only reuse all existing agricultural land of the site but also add additional agriculture fields on the east side of the river, a homage to the historic uses of the valley.

Moving Down As visitors descend into the museum, darkness takes over and natural light is used periodically to guide visitors through the exhibitions.

Lift Bovisa Taking inspiration from the industrial vernacular to the north, the fitness facility utilizes a permanently placed crane to install and maintain the provisional structures of the Polimi facility. To contrast the sterile environments of the sport halls, a wood truss frame was used to warm up the aesthetics of the space. The trusses support a single-ply ETFE membrane system which varies in transparency to address human comfort inside the sport halls.

Each sport hall features a prefabricated CLT locker room which is self supporting. Like the truss structure, the locker rooms can be easily moved to events around Milan or remain in place after the shell structures have been moved. The light weight of the ETFE Panels plus the easily assembled truss system allows any of the main sport halls to be easily disassembled and reassembled.

Adriano Arboretum Bisected by Via Adriano, left over green space cuts across the urban fabric of Milan. This particular green space separates the
old city of Milan (sitting south of Naviglio Martesana) from the rapidly growing neighborhood ‘Quartiere Adriano.’ The
green space currently serves as an electrical easement in the district, housing towering lattice structures that carry electricity per the city’s demand. The chosen green space begins at the historical water tower at the western end of the electrical easement. Moving east, the green space becomes defined by two ‘banks’. The north bank, being Via Private Vipiteno and to the south, a series of abandoned factories that are being converted into luxury residential units. Upon reaching Esselunga, the green space continuous east, past Via Adriano

until it reaches Naviglio Martesana. This remaining green space is flanked to the north and south by a variety of residential buildings, whose residents are eager to enjoy a more pedestrian focused expansion to their neighborhood. The narrow stream of grass is relatively simple, however three roads bisect the corridor, creating a unique design challenge in reconnecting the fragmented landscape.

Trees

Trees shall be used not only to accentuate the beautification of the public spaces, but to also reduce local noise pollution and rainwater runoff, by massing the majority of the trees outside of the flood zone.

A new permeable pedestrian and cycle route will be centrally location to enable and encourage local residents to circulate through the public space, the Pedestrian & path will connect existing nodes to each and to Cycle Routes residential buildings.

Allotments Hills

Allotments are a semiprivate garden in an urban zone that lacks private external space.

Water Basins

Public sport and recreation facilities will be located in sunken spaces, with tier seating all around for spectators and social gatherings. The sports facilities will act as a giant sustainable urban drainage system to collect rainwater during heavy downpours.

Dramatic sculptural landscape design features will be used as flood barriers in areas that are of flood risk, the hills will be created out of the ground dug to form the basins.

Piscina Masterplan 01) The proposed piscina site is currently a flood plain for the River. Purposefully filling the site with clean water from Naviglio Martesana allows for the creation of an outdoor entertainment venue. 02) By raising and lowering the topography of the site, more water can be contained within the flood plain. 03) The addition of a natural piscina, cleans the water, allowing a safe environment for entertainment and education. During high flood periods, gates connecting both Martesana and the Lambro River can be adjusted to maximize water storage 04) A raised resilient boardwalk allows pedestrians to access all sides of the piscina throughout the year

Information Station Advertising has become prevalent in modern society. The aesthetic and political consequences cannot yet be foreseen. Rather than subtly hiding ads throughout the project, the team designed a shading system that boldly shoves advertisements into the consumers face (while providing passive cooling), a new form of hypercommercialism. As more information covers the facade, the more bold and larger advertisements must become until every surface is covered.

The site is a white space between two major highways and the light rail service near downtown Dallas. The incorporated fueling station and park-and-ride seek to fill a gap in the current infrastructure by acting as an oasis to the car-centric metro. The project is organized around the deceleration of user groups within the site. As all three user groups slow down, they intersect at moments saturated in advertisements.

Site Section

Cross-Node The aim of the project was to investigate the relationships between the physical metamorphosis of an existing urban landscape and the shift in its environmental qualities and social relevance. The site, located near the Porta Genova train station was in need of a new program and role that respected the delicate location and context but added contemporary values. The project called for a multi-purpose

hostel that could host events and expositions with a public open space and urban garden. While the building sits at or below the datums of neighboring buildings, the large overhang and sharp angles demand attention in the tight urban fabric The landscape, while primarily hardscape, features two large groupings of trees which act as a continuous mass alongside the hostel form.

Riga Airport Train Station Designed according to BIM Level 03, the new Riga Airport Train Station will act as phase one in the Riga Airport Expansion. The train station will connect the airport’s future expansion to new multi-story parking garages, and a luxury hotel. To unify the project, an undulating structural wood facade was designed to express the speed of the train and create a clear opening for pedestrians approaching the airport.

The entire facade was designed and optimized in Grasshopper resulting in a facade that uses 6 structural modules. The design was further developed in Revit using Dynamo.

Bubba Southern Comforts As part of the renovation of the Clemens Building, this tenant improvement project was influenced by the building’s era and the restaurant owner’s southern roots to create a unique identity for this fine dining establishment featuring southern food and drinks. The restaurant owner wanted a specific, distinctive atmosphere for this new restaurant and bar. We used

two oversized custom chandeliers as focal points for guests and pedestrians. Chesterfield-style sofas, high wing-back chairs and custom plaid banquettes create an intimate dining space unique to Des Moines. Original hexagon tile and exposed exterior brick walls proudly display the rich fabric of this building, which is maintained on the National Register of Historic Places.

Maple | Walnut | Steel A custom storage solution for a Des Moines Executive. The original closet, consisting of only wire hangers was unfit to display the wealth of bespoke clothes and Italian leather shoes. The primary design complications included a narrow space of 1.8m x 6m, which could not be enlarged and a series of MEP components at the 2.5m datum line. By creating a hanging system that

was oriented perpendicular to the length of the closet, visual clutter was reduced without reducing from the original storage capacity. Accessory storage is concealed behind magnetic closers, further reducing the visual clutter of the wardrobe. The shoe storage solution integrates with a solid walnut bench, reducing the need to leave the closet while dressing.
