EXPECTATIONS ON COUNTER CUSTOMER INTERACTION • Always spray a fragrance 10 cm away from the blotter as we do not want a wet patch, we want a light halo. • Spray downwards, away from people’s eyes and the shelves. • Wait a couple of seconds for the fragrance to sit on the blotter before letting the customer know it’s time to smell. • Always spray a blotter for each person smelling, including yourself. Experiencing the fragrance with your customer is important. • Once they have experienced it, if they do not wish to keep it, dispose of it in the bin. • While they and yourself smell the blotter, it’s your opportunity to use your sales and fragrance knowledge to tell the story of the brand and/or fragrance.

CONSULTANT ATTITUDE • Greeting every customer with a smile. • Always being approachable. • No crossing arms, hands on hips etc. • Being close by if customer needs anything. CLEANLINESS • Always making sure we’re checking for used blotters around shelves and disposing of them into the bin with a tissue. • Cleaning fragrance bottles and sprays. • Wiping down, dusting shelves. VISUAL MERCHANDISING • Always following VM guidelines/planograms for each brand and launches is imperative. If you have any questions ask your MIC. • Always having testers in front of stock. • Fragrance front facing outwards. • No double stacking of fragrance boxes. • Ticketing on all shelves as per retailer guidelines. • Have just enough blotters on shelves and not the whole pack.

• Neat/clean hair (no flyway's). • Hair below shoulder length must be tied back (a neat ponytail or bun with hair coloured ties or black only).

GREETING YOUR CUSTOMERS APPROACHING CUSTOMERS Lack of acknowledgment from retail staff is one of shoppers’ top three biggest complaints about shopping and it could be a contributing factor as to why shoppers enjoy and don’t enjoy their retail experience. Our succeeding interactions with shoppers make lasting impressions. It’s a low-cost investment you can make to improve the customers overall experience.

In the shoes of a Customer What a Customer wants:

As well as always being approachable and greeting every customer with a smile, there are different ways of greeting different customers when working at your counter. Customers have many different reasons for approaching your counter so observation is key to addressing each one. I.e. Browsing, looking for a present, regulars, self treating, researching, floating or waiting.

Every single one of these types of people are opportunities for sales. Even the “floaters” or the least interested are all open to purchases if they find the right thing for them. The average attention span is eight seconds. So you have a limited window for customer’s attention to demonstrate authenticity and personality and “Hi, how are you” is a common greeting used by most, but not an impressionable one.

UNDERSTANDING THE CUSTOMER After the customer has felt acknowledged and received a customised welcome, it’s time to build a relationship by being personable with them. Talk to someone instead of talking about something. People talk to people and people buy from people first. If you can talk with your customer with the same enthusiasm and excitement as you would your best friend you have them right where you want them! Most people can see straight through “a sales approach” and Cosmax really wants our consultants to be the customer’s friend, but with all the knowledge and advice of a fragrance connoisseur! Small talk greetings and questions should invite two-way conversation. This builds trust and a relationship between you and your customer and makes it much easier for you to gauge your customer and synchronise with their emotional state and rhythm. Examples of small talk: “Are you enjoying your afternoon?” “How’d you hear about us?” “Did you watch_____? I stayed up to watch the end!” “How’s your day going?” “What are you up to the rest of the day?” “Who are we shopping for today?”

MAKING THE OFFER PT 1 OPEN ENDED QUESTIONS The only way to offer a customer what they’re after is by encouraging them to chat. This is the key to any good sale unless they’re coming in knowing exactly what they want?… Not true! In this instance, by not asking the customer questions, it will result in a loss of a new or second fragrance sale, loss knowledge of what they’re buying, loss in trust and a relationship with the customer. Your aim should be to get as much information as you can off every type of shopper with open ended questions. These are questions without a yes or no answer and require a person to pause, think, and reflect. Answers, typically, will be personal feelings, opinions, or ideas about a subject. This encourages the customer to give you more detailed responses, helping you get exactly what they want/need. Example of a closed question: Consultant: “Are you looking for yourself today?” Customer: “No..”

Example of a open ended question: Consultant: “Tell me what brings you in today?” Customer: “I’m just looking for a wedding fragrance..”

Best way to remember how to use an open ended question is starting with: “People will forget Why, how, what, describe, explain, tell me, or what do you think about. what you’ve told them, they will forget And not start sentences with: what you did, but Are/was, did/do, will/won’t, didn’t, aren’t, would, if. they will never forget HOW YOU MADE THEM FEEL.” For ForInternal InternalUse UseONLY ONLY


MAKING THE OFFER PT 2 THE ART OF LISTENING After listening to what they want and asking the right questions to get them there, ask yourself if you really listened to them? Listening and actively listening are very different things. Sometimes while listening to your customer we automatically associate fragrances or what we think they need while they’re talking. Seems correct, but we may miss some details or uncertainty while doing so. Actively listening means not assuming an outcome or answer before you have the full information. Steps to actively listen: 1. Giving the customer your full attention Facing them, eye contact, not touching or facilitating anything else. 2. Listen and ask questions Give them the time to explain in their words. Then ask follow up, open ended questions to further understand their needs. 3. Repeat back their needs and wants Okay, tell me if I am correct: it’s your sister’s birthday tomorrow. You think she would like a floral, light fragrance, based on the fragrances you know she likes. And your budget is under $100 and you would like it wrapped, does this sound right? 4. Allow time for them to agree and adjust Yes that sounds right. Okay great, based on the fragrance you told me they liked I’d love to show you this…It’s a bit over your budget of $100, but I can add some GWP’s and wrap it for you?

TURNING OBJECTIONS INTO POSITIVES Sales objections are quite common in retail so its important to read each individual customer. As there’s no one size fits all approach, so don’t apply tips blindly and don’t be pushy or dishonest. We want to be the friendly voice of reason that helps our customers get what they desire. Most common objectives:

Objection #1: “It’s too expensive.”

This bottle is too expensive!

This is about getting the customer to unsee the price and see the value and benefits of the product to justify the cost and what it can bring them.

“ I can offer you a smaller bottle , but the 100ml is the best value for money.”

Objection #2: “Isn’t this cheaper online?”

Loyalty doesn’t come from the lowest prices, it comes from trust worthy salespersons who demonstrate that they’re looking out for the customer.

Objection #3: “I need to consult with my significant other first.”

I don’t like the scent..

Try to encourage the customer to bring their significant other into store so you can chat with them directly to determine their concerns, and close the sale.

“Let’s find one that suits you better.”

Objection #4: “I’ve had a bad experience in the past.”

It is important to reassure the customer that they won’t have a similar problem again. Demonstrate the issues have been addressed.

Objection #5: “I need to think about it..” Address the underlying concerns as to ‘why?’.

Objection #6 – “I’m happy with what I have right now.”

I need more time..

“I understand, take your time. Try the fragrance on your skin, you are the missing note.”

Give out samples and encourage the customer to try something new.

CLOSING THE SALE Closing the sale is a make-or-break moment in sales. Choosing the right phrases to seal a sales deal is crucial. You have spent time with your customer and you want them to get what they want/need. If you follow the previous steps in “Steps To Selling” you will have a much easier and flowing closing experience as you would have built a relationship with your customer. Here are two closing methods we like to use at Cosmax: Summary Closes: Consultants who use this closing technique reiterate the items the customer is hopefully purchasing (stressing the value and benefits) in an effort to get the customer to purchase. I.e. “So here we have just launched yesterday, Givenchy Gentleman EDP. Today you get a phone power bank with the 100ml purchase and I will throw in a Givenchy L’interdit sample for your girlfriend who you said prompted you to come in.” Now or Never closes: This is where the consultant makes an offer that includes a special benefit that prompts immediate purchase. I.e. GWP, wrapping, sale, pack, discount, samples etc. This technique works because it creates a sense of urgency and can help overcome hesitation or concern.

Ideally, never feel defeated if the customer doesn’t purchase. You have opened their minds and noses with possibilities and knowledge. 70% of the time the customer comes back and purchases. They sometimes just need time to digest.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FRAGRANCE THE WORD PERFUME The origin of the word perfume comes from the Latin words: “per fumum” meaning literally “through smoke.” ANCIENT CIVILISATIONS • Documentation shows that fragrance played a part in the lives of people as far back as 3500BC. • Fragrance substances were used for fumigations, purification, oils, balms, fermented liquors, etc. • People believed that fragrances would increase personal beauty and power, as well as bringing mere mortals “closer to the gods.” • Powdered myrrh, cassia and other perfumes were used in the embalming process. Note – Some of the oils used were so potent, that 3,300 years after Tutankhamen’s death, a trace of fragrance in the tightly sealed pots of unguents could still be detected. BIBLICAL TIMES • Perfume was held in high esteem and there are frequent mentions of fragrance in the bible including myrrh, galbanum, saffron, cedar, spikenard and frankincense. • The three wise men carried gifts of frankincense, myrrh and gold for baby Jesus. MIDDLE AGES 5th – 16th Century • New raw materials and techniques were brought back from the Orient and new extraction methods were discovered. • The Arabs and Persians helped spread the use of perfumes through the spice trade. • Fragrance was thought to have properties of disinfection and protection against epidemics. • In Ancient Rome – people perfumed three (3) times a day and dogs and horses were also perfumed.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FRAGRANCE THE RENAISSANCE 14th – 17th Centuries • New discoveries of chemistry replaced alchemy and it’s recipes • Famous explorers brought back new raw materials from America and India e.g. cocoa, vanilla, tobacco etc. • The process of distillation was discovered. • Perfume expanded into Europe and perfumed gloves were manufactured. • During Queen Elizabeth’s First reign, all public places were scented since she could not tolerate bad smells (16th Century). THE SEDUCTION ERA 18th Century • King Louis XIV court was called ‘La cour Parfumée’, he demanded a different fragrance every day. • ‘Eau de Cologne’ was launched by Jean-Marie Farina, a clear advance in the history of perfumery. • Grasse, a leather tanning town, was established as the European centre for fragrance production. • Development of specialist glass and crystal manufacturers such as Baccarat, meant that more creative and beautiful flacons could be created. THE ROMANTIC ERA 19th Century • At the turn of the century, perfume was a single flower fragrance e.g. rose, violet, lilac. • Women looked for more delicate scents which would reflect their own personality. • The expansion of perfumery coincided with the Industrial Revolution. • New technology produced synthetic substances like Vanillan (vanilla note), and Ionone (violet note). • The spray was invented. • Napoleon used two quarts of violet cologne each week and sixty bottles of double extract, jasmine a month.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF FRAGRANCE A NEW CENTURY Approaching the 20th Century • Perfume became a luxury, through the emergence of creative bottles, packaging and advertising. • Fashion designer fragrances arrived in the perfumery world e.g. Coco Chanel and Christian Dior. • New original fragrance notes such as heliotropine and aldehydes were used. • In 1917, Francois Coty designed a perfume Chypre, from which the whole Chypre family is derived. THE EXTRAVAGANT YEARS 1920-30 • Elisabeth Arden and Helena Rubinstein began the trend for beauty care and cosmetics in America. • The flapper was in vogue. • Chypre and Oriental fragrances were revolutionised by Gabrielle (Coco) Chanel with the launch of a new, original style of fragrance Chanel No 5. THE GREAT DEPRESSION 1940’s - 1950’s • Creation of the first Eau de Toilette. • In the 1950’s fragrances became more accessible and had more character. • Fragrance and fashion development started to focus on New York due to the youth movement. THE FLOWER POWER ERA 1960’s - 1970’s • Sexual liberation and the concept of ‘taking care of the body’ became more important. • 1970’s fragrance was more about sophistication and provocation rather than the natural softness and romanticism of the past. • Floriental fragrances were the major areas of fragrance development. A BRIEF HISTORY OF FRAGRANCE THE MODERN ERA

1980’s to 2000’s • Female fragrances were very powerful in the 80’s and reflected women’s new found successes. • A “Dynasty” culture obsessed with wealth, status and designer labels emerged during the 80’s and then in the 90’s people rebelled against these consuming excesses. • The concept of nature became the driving force on fragrance in the 90’s. • The fragrance market was flooded with new launches, limited editions, seasonal fragrances and fragrances from new designers.

THE SECOND MILLENNIUM

• People were motivated to become more focused on health and well-being and listening to their emotions. • New trends encouraged perfumers to create creamy sweet fragrances with ingredients such as vanilla, milk and caramel notes. Which took people back to their childhood e.g. Thierry Mugler - Angel, Lolita Lempicka. • Fresh ‘Ozonic’ notes were developed, smelling of the sea and clean water, they evoked feelings of nature. • Celebrity fragrances.

NOWADAYS

• Spa and beauty shops expand as people are now more focused on taking care of themselves. • Aromatherapy and aromacology were developed; this is where fragrances are used to release the inner feelings of the body and soul.

CONCLUSION

Perfume trends reflect the evolution of humanity and society, from its sense of commerce and medicine to the art of perfumery. It is more than ever a luxury industry. The alchemy of scents is the basis for the creation of modern fragrances and perfumers have an unlimited palette of ingredients to create scents that will satisfy the increasingly knowledgeable and demanding consumers of this new century.

OPENING This is the first impression of the perfume and contains the most volatile oils. These ingredients can be any combination from the perfumer’s palette e.g. citrus, aromatic plants, fruits, etc. The top note quickly blends into the second part of the fragrance. It only lasts for a few moments.

This is where the personality of the fragrance is enjoyed. Usually containing floral tones and heralding the appearance of the dominant notes. The dominant notes will appear to classify the fragrance family, Floral, Chypre, etc. These notes are a blend of many fragrance notes from nature and science.

This is the foundation of the fragrance and the ingredients are often referred to as ‘fixatives.’ Fixatives bind together the composition and lead them from the top to the base. NATURAL INGREDIENTS Raw materials used to make perfume are found all over the world. The essential oils in plants can be found in the flowers, leaves, fruit, bark, roots, gum and resins as well as seeds. The costliest and finest of natural perfume oils called the ‘absolute’ are obtained from certain flowers e.g. rose, jasmine and violets. List of some of the natural ingredients used in fragrance: Rose, Jasmine, Ylang Ylang, Orange blossom, Cedar wood, Mimosa.

SYNTHETIC INGREDIENTS These are created in the laboratory and play a major role in the perfume industry, most often used as an addition rather than a substitute for natural ingredients. Aroma Chemicals enhance rather than subtract from the scent, giving it nuances, basic and new notes that would otherwise be unobtainable. Modern perfumes as they exist today would not be available without Aroma Chemicals. Some synthetics exist in nature while others do not. e.g. Ionone, a strong violet scent – without this substance, there would be few perfumes with the fragrance of violet, since violet absolute is prohibitive in cost and available in only very small quantities. Without synthetic materials, modern perfumery would not exist. List of some of the synthetic materials used in fragrance manufacture: Aldehyde, Floral ozone, Lignine (substitute vanillin), Lily of the valley, Freesia. Natural raw materials of animal origin are : Civet, Castoreum, Tonka Musk and Ambergris.

AN ACCORD In the same way you hold down several notes in music to create a chord that has a unique sound. In perfume, an accord is a scent made up of several perfume notes, or ingredients, that blend together to form a distinct fragrance.

AN ESSENCE Is a concentration from a flavour/smell. A perfume or cologne generally has a particular fragrance which refers to the essential oils and aromatic compounds involved in the creation of the scent, whereas the essence is more complex and refers to the particular aromatic compounds used in the perfume. For example: Floral compounds such as rose, jasmine and peony; Fruity compounds such as pear, guava and coconut; Citrus compounds such as lemon, orange, bergamot and grapefruit.

AN ESSENTIAL OIL Essential oils are the essence of a plant, distilled and prepared to bring the power of nature into a fragrance. Essential oils are produced by distillation, boiling or pressing.

AN ABSOLUTE Used in perfumery and aromatherapy. An absolute is similar to an essential oil, but the difference lies in the extraction process. They are both highly concentrated and are aromatic extracts from flowers or plants. Absolutes therefore contain even more of the aromatic detail of the original ingredient. Making the smell closer to its "natural" form and, therefore, superior in quality.

ORIENTAL PERFUME A major category of perfume is distinguished by the use of warm, ambery, sweet notes like vanilla, tonka, benzoin, and amber. The ingredients are often associated with the Middle East — like frankincense/incense, and amber. There are subcategories: Spicy Oriental perfumes, Woody Oriental, Floral Oriental or Florientals, etc.

ALDEHYDES Aldehydes are aromatic chemicals that provide sparkle and lift to perfumes, and depending on their type, also provide their own scent. Aldehydes C-12 and lower (the C stands for carbon) provide sparkle; Aldehydes C-14 and higher add a fruit note. Chanel No. 5 and Guerlain Mitsouko are famous perfumes with aldehydes.

BALSAMIC Balsams/balsamics do not refer to the salad dressing, but rather to warm, ambery, soft vanillic notes such as benzoin, Tolu balsam, and tonka bean. They are in most Oriental fragrances.

FLANKER In perfumery, a flanker refers to newly created perfume that shares some attributes of an already existing perfume. These attributes may be the name, packaging or notes of the existing fragrance.

It is said that a good perfume should follow the one who wears it, but never lead‌ In the fragrance market, there are various names used to describe the type of product. This means that each type of product, depending on the amount of oil used, has different characteristics and “staying powerâ€?, these affect how long the fragrance lingers on the skin. It is hard to determine how long a fragrance will last on an individual person as this will depend on many different aspects e.g. fragrance will last on oilier skin for longer than dryer skin. The table in the following page is a guide only.

This is the strongest fragrance available. This means that you use less and it lasts longer.

This is lighter than pure perfume, but still has longlasting characteristics. It is less expensive than pure perfume and much more common.

This is lighter than EDP and normally a great place to start. It can be layered through-out the day.

Has the lowest concentration of essential oils. Ideal to carry around to have a refreshing spritz through-out the day!

Often referred to just as cologne and has a bigger dilution of fragrances.

FRAGRANCE FAMILIES

Fragrances that are constructed in a similar manner and have key ingredient combinations in common, are said to be in the same fragrance family group. Even though each fragrance within a group is unique, many of the middle and base notes might be similar. Fragrance families are broadly split in the following families and can be broken into sub groups as many fragrances can have key ingredients from more than one family. Customers will generally choose their fragrances from one or two main families. Some other families could include Chypre and Fougère .

WOMEN’S FRAGRANCE FAMILIES FAMILY

DESCRIPION

FLORAL

This fragrance family focuses mainly on scents for ladies. The fragrances are designed around a floral bouquet to give femininity, but the scope for uniqueness is huge due to the different facets you can add. This family makes up the majority of the women’s fragrance market and it is highly complex and segmented. The most feminine of all the fragrance families.

CITRUS

A very small portion of the female market, used only for pure freshness and cologne type notes. Very top note driven, they give a bright, fresh, invigorating, light and natural sensation. These are refreshing fragrances for the energetic, sporty woman. Appropriate for office wear, day wear or warm evening wear - a perfect summer fragrance. E.g. Bergamot, Orange, Lemon, Mandarin, Grapefruit.

CHYPRE

A classic construction based on a woody, mossy and flowery complex, sometimes with aspects of leather or fruits. Chypre perfumes are rich, tenacious, complex and intense. Very elegant and classical, for women who tend to prefer slightly out of the norm fragrances. Eg Oak Moss, Patchouli.

WOODY

This classification is based around a complex mix of woods, sandal or cedar woods and resins. For the woman who is not easily influenced by trends and is confident of her preferences. Long lasting, strong, comforting, dry, creamy, smooth and intense at times. Eg Cedar, Sandalwood, Patchouli, Vetiver.

ORIENTAL

The heaviest of the character types, these fragrances are built around spices, woods, musk and vanilla. A blend of warmth, bewitching and indulgent. These notes give deep, intense and distinctive characters; they are best described as seductive, mystical, luxurious, dramatic, sexy and sensual and mostly worn in the evening. Eg Vanilla, Patchouli, spices.

GREEN

Green fragrance notes are natural in character, often married with fruity and floral notes, they are modern and fashionable. A slightly eccentric fragrance for the modern woman. Good daytime wear and occasional evening wear in warmer weather. It is sporty, charismatic and artful.

MEN’S FRAGRANCE FAMILIES FAMILY

DESCRIPION

CITRUS

The light, fresh, invigorating and natural character of citrus notes, are often combined with more masculine scents (woods and spices). Typically these are modern and fresh. A great fragrance when you want to feel refreshed. Perfect for warm and humid summer days, sporty and energetic. E.g. Bergamot, Orange, Lemon, Mandarin, Grapefruit.

AROMATIC

Thyme, sage, mint, rosemary and clove are some of the herbs and spices that produce an aromatic fragrance. This character type is based around green and herbaceous notes, which gives freshness and brightness. Perfect for the adventurous man who prefers exotic uplifting fragrances.

FOUGERE

A powerful fantasy composition of lavender, coumarin, oak moss, geranium and other notes make up the Fougere family. A great fragrance choice for distinguished gentlemen who appreciate the finer things in life.

WOODY

This classification is based around a complex mix of woods and resins. For the traditional elegant gentleman, one that is not easily influenced by trends and is confident of his preferences. ABSINTHE OIL (wormwood) Is an intensely sharp and fresh note. Which gives a mint-like scent. ALMOND Almond notes are very “gourmand”. Almost good to eat. Almond can give a fragrance a marzipan quality, maybe even remind you of macaroons. Also can be green, nutty, woody. AMBER A heavy, full bodied, powdery, warm fragrance note. Amber oil comes from the Baltic amber tree. AMBERGRIS A sperm whale secretion with a sweet, woody odour. Usually reproduced synthetically, as the sale of ambergris is illegal in many countries. AMBRETTE SEED From the hibiscus flower, it has a subtle and sublime musky odour. It is very rich in ambrettolide, which smells like what we learned to identify as "white musk" - clean, sweet, slightly floral.

ANGELICA ROOT The aroma of angelica root is quite strong, so it's typically used in very small quantities. Angelica shows notes of earth, musk, celery, pepper, herbs, and just a hint of warm citrus.

APPLES Apples are a member of the rose family and have been a part of fragrance since medieval times. Apple blossom gives a soft, floral smell.

BLOOD ORANGE ‘Blood’ refers to the deep crimson flesh of this delicious fresh, tangy citrus. It adds a real sparkle.

AQUATIC SMELLS Fresh accords of sea water and are mostly found as fragrances for men. Can remind people of summer days, or fresh cucumber, sea side, fresh, crisp.

CACTUS FLOWER Pollinated by wild desert bees that rely on visual signals rather than scent to find the flowers. Subtle sweet pleasant fresh smell.

BASIL Delicious herb and aromatic fragrance note. With a green, sharp and spicy edge that can also have a lemony smell. In ancient Arabic perfumery it is ‘the king of the fragrant plants’.

CARDAMOM One of the oldest known ingredients in perfumery. Part of the ginger family. Initially fresh, but then becomes quite sweet, warm and spiced/woody.

BENZOIN A balsamic resin from the Styrax tree. Benzoin is a vanilla-like note that compliments other ingredients.

CARROT A powdery earthy note. The root and leaves can be used. Gives fragrances a “Vegetal” smell.

BERGAMOT The tangy oil that is expressed from the bergamot orange, which is grown primarily in Italy.

CASHMERAN A synthetic aldehyde with a spicy, ambery, musky, floral odour. Used to invoke the velvety smell or "feel" of cashmere.

BITTER ORANGE Used for making marmalade. Bitter oranges are usually not eaten fresh because the flesh is too tart and bitter tasting.

GOJI BERRY These bright coloured, 2,000 year old berries are a pocket of tart and sour, kind of like a cranberry. But still can be fresh and sweet. GRAPEFRUIT A zesty burst of a bitter sweet. Sharp, aromatic, refreshing. Blends well with uplifting scents. GREEN TEA LEAF Crisp, light, fresh, soothing fragrance, from a light orchid to a chestnut smell. HELIOTROPE It can be smelt before it is seen, its delicious scent that is between marzipan, vanilla, cherry pie and almond. The odour profile is powdery.

GARDENIA Flower from the coffee family. Its scent is famously expensive and hard to produce, Gardenias symbolize purity and sweetness. They indicate secret love. They convey joy.

HIBISCUS An exotic floral that conjures visions of a tropical paradise. A soft floral note with musky undertones.

GERANIUM There are many types of Geranium with many different scents, from pineapple to chocolate. But the typical scent is green and peppery.

HYACINTH ‘Flower of rain’ is a light floral that is more intoxicating when wet.

GINGER Uplifting and almost nose-tinglingly spicy. Ginger is fresh and help compliment many other fragrance ingredients.

IRIS The word Iris means rainbow. It is the Greek goddess for the Messenger of Love. The flower has almost no smell, but the smell for fragrance is taken from the roots. It has a vegetal smell. JASMINE A beautiful white flower employed widely in perfumery. Jasmine is one of the most expensive perfume ingredients in the world. Sweet floral note, but with a deadsexy muskiness to it. JASMINE SAMBAC Grown in tropical Asia, its incredibly intense aroma is floral, yet a more musky and masculine scent. JOSHUA TREE Desert trees the yucca moths that pollinate Joshua trees at night. They have a very unique familiar smell. This has been described as mushroom alcohol.

LEATHER Creative accord built around the exceptional quality of labdanum. It offers animal, smoky, woody and slightly amber notes, and creates an extremely sensual second-skin effect. Labdanum brings a pure and noble character to the fragrance.

MANGO Succulent, juicy, drippingly sweet. The hint of tropics you need to remind yourself of summer. Related to the cashew family, mango has over 1,000 different varieties. Mango blossom is also used in perfumery, floral sweet smell.

LEMON CAVIAR The pulp/inside of the finger lemon/lime. “Citrus caviar” is a tart burst that tastes like a cross between a lemon and lime.

MIMOSA With its yellow pompom flowers, this plant is a dreamy sweetness. Its bark roots and resin are also all used in perfumery to create a warm, honey, iris-like, powdery airiness.

LILLY OF THE VALLEY / MUGUET One of the three most used florals in perfumery. Unlike jasmine and rose, it is usually synthetically reproduced.

MINT Highly aromatic, instantly cooling and utterly refreshing. Complimenting other ingredients.

LYCHEE Similar to a very juicy grape with a mild flavour that is aqueous, delicately rosy and temperately subtlety sweet.

MUSK Natural musk comes from the glands of the musk deer. But the vast majority of musk produced and sold in the world today is synthetic. This is a good thing, seeing as musk is found in almost every men's fragrance and cologne. Natural musk also one of the most expensive perfume ingredients.

MAGNOLIA Is one of those blowsy white floral ingredients that perfumers just love, love, love. Creamily sweet, but with a fresh edge to its petal power. MANDARIN Mandarin’s zestiness is instantly cheering. Sweet, fruity, citrussy, with hints of neroli – and just what perfumers often look for to ‘lift’ the overture of a scent.

NEROLI A citrus oil distilled from the blossoms of either the sweet or bitter orange tree. The Italian term for neroli is zagara.

PAVOT FLOWER / POPPY Doesn’t generally smell very strong. Used in fragrances as a mystery, creating its own scent.

OAKMOSS Derived from a lichen that grows on oak trees. Prized for its aroma, which is heavy and oriental at first, and then becomes refined and earthy when dried making it reminiscent of bark, seashore and foliage.

PEACH Peach is a versatile ingredient in perfumery. Peach is very powerful, a small amount can add a sweet, creamy touch.

ORANGE BLOSSOM Light-filled ‘solar’ scent. It’s extracted by the bitter orange tree and has a lush, rich, jasmine-like scent that closely resembles the true fragrance of the blossoms. OSMANTHUS A flowering tree native to China, valued for its delicate fruity apricot aroma. OUD / OUDH Refers to wood from the Agar tree found mostly in Southeast Asia. The fragrant resin is treasured by perfumers. PATCHOULI A bushy shrub originally from Malaysia and India. It has a musty-sweet, spicy aroma. Patchouli is often used as a base note.

PEAR A sweet, fresh, aquatic fruity note. When you smell pear you picture a juicy fruit. PEONY Peonies are sensual and fragile. “The king of the flower” in Japan and China. A fresh, soft floral note: uplifting, calming floral scent.

PINK PEPPERCORN Produced from the bright pink fruit of the evergreen tree, Schinus molle. Despite the name, it is unrelated to true pepper. Pink pepper is less spicy with an underlying sweet, rosy facet. It’s exotic and feminine. POSIDONIA Flowering marine plants. Found in the seas of the Mediterranean. Very masculine potent smell. PRALINE Praline is a form of confection containing at a minimum culinary nuts. Reminds you of a sweet dessert.

PETITGRAIN Is the leaf extract from a orange tree. The smell results in a fresh citrus smell.

RASPBERRY Tangy or sweet, juicy or tart: more sophisticated than a strawberry, but just as lush. Raspberries quite often appear, nowadays, as part of a “red berry accord” in fruity, or fruity-floral.

PIMENTO The smell of the trees and berries is reminiscent of clove, juniper and cinnamon with a dash of black pepper.

ROSE One of the main flower notes used in perfumery. Rose is, shockingly, also one of the more expensive perfume ingredients.

PINE Closely linked to a lot of Arab perfumes, Pine is wonderfully fresh, crisp, spicy, outdoorsy and invigorating.

BULGARIAN ROSE Unlike other roses, they are grown in perfect climate conditions. “Liquid Gold” as a nickname, all parts of the flower are used. Rich heady scent.

ROSEMARY Only used with the lightest touch due to it being pungent, lavender-like, aromatic. Rosemary was the first modern fragrance from the 15th century. SALT Salt in a scent adds freshness, texture and a mineral quality. It can help accentuate other ingredients. SANDALWOOD A creamy sweet oil from the Indian sandal tree. One of the oldest known perfumery ingredients, commonly used as a base note. SANTOLINA Bright yellow flower heads, smelling similar to lavender or sage, santolina foliage has a pungent or musty aroma. A strong scent. SICHUAN PEPPER A peppery note coming from the berries of the Zanthoxylum plant. It is aromatic, herbal, spicy, with a citrus touch. STAR ANISE A seed that is star like in shape, intensely spicy-sweet, pungent, warm, licorice-like aroma, with a deep balsamic-woody undertone.

MADAGASCAR VANILLA About 80% of the world's real vanilla comes from Madagascar and relies on a black bee to pollinate. Sparkling, romantic, soothing, fruity zest.

SUEDE Only a synthetic note which replicates the layered, textured soft, pliable, sensuous feel of suede on the skin. Soft, powdery, musky. TOBACCO Cured/dried leaves. The smell of tobacco is quite a sensual smell rather then what people first think. It can add sweet, sexy, smoky and mysteriousness, alongside rich florals and Oriental spices, giving hints of caramel or whiskey.

TAHITIAN VANILLA Flavour of paradise. Grown in the Islands of Tahiti. Slightly stronger in scent than traditional vanilla. Rich and sweet aroma of a creamy, caramel, fruity vanilla and coconut. VETIVER Comes from a sun dried root of the plant. Its scent, initially earthy, woody and root-like. It can become increasingly sweet and slightly floral.

TONKA BEAN Derived from a plant native to Brazil. Has an aroma of vanilla, but with strong hints of cinnamon, cloves, and almonds. Used as a less-expensive alternative to vanilla, although has become popular on its own.

VIOLET Violet is a staple of the perfumer's palette, deep, rich and alluring. A sweet and powdery, airy and dewy floral note.

TOLU BALSAM A sap-like substance that comes from the Myroxylon balsamum tree. Cinnamon and vanilla, soft and inviting. Also used for its healing properties.

YLANG YLANG An Asian evergreen tree with fragrant flowers, the oil of which is used in expensive floral perfumes.

TUBEROSE A plant with highly perfumed white flowers, resembling those of a lily. Expensive and intoxicating. VANILLA Derived from the seed pod of the vanilla orchid. Highly fragrant, popular, and expensive to produce.

“...For Matière Blanche,” I wanted to recreate the sensation of a soft, caressing wood oil. Sandalwood, with its creamy texture, was an obvious choice in my mind because it subconsciously evokes the idea of a pure and tender white. To accentuate this facet as much as possible, I added a velvety note of fig milk to the heart as well as a signature powdery musk note...”

“…For Matière Blanche, I wanted to reinterpret the precious and iconic perfume ingredient of Oud wood. When burnt, Oud wood releases a warm and enveloping white smoke enshrouded in mystery and voluptuousness. It was this idea that gave rise to the Oud Blanc note… I therefore tried to compose the scent of this smoke by combining the heat of Incense, the softness of crystalline white Musk and a creamy note of white Vanilla to create a warm/cool duality that suits it marvellously…”
