Editor's letter
THIS WAS A FASCINATING YEAR FOR ME. I kept a journal of my days in the universe of beauty – documenting the emotional highs and lows of the ongoing pandemic, the Zoom meetings that are still going strong, and the few real live events, which I enjoy most. And this year, Cosmetics turned 50! Fifty years in the service of beauty, and more than 30 years under the stewardship of the great Jim Hicks. I knew Jim back in the days at Rogers, and had the chance of working closely with him since this magazine became digital.
Magazines should be so much more than a vehicle to flog a lipstick or two – although there’s no shame in showcasing beautiful products! But with Jim’s vision, Cosmetics has pushed for a diversity of content and become a bastion of agenda-setting conversation, showcasing the evolution of the beauty industry. It has held a mirror up to the industry to ask complex, defining questions of how we can all improve and has provided a platform to celebrate talent, craft and community. It is a home for exploring fresh perspectives, communicating in a way that lifts, inspires and empowers consumers. Jim has always looked ahead to bring together the industry. And under his leadership, Cosmetics has become, at its heart, an indispensable resource for discovering the very best people, brands, products, trends and ideas today. Working with Jim has been a pleasure and an honour. Because this is his last issue and he is transitioning to his next chapter, I’d like to thank him for everything he brought to beauty! Merci beaucoup, Jim!
