Plant Your Happy Place™ Make Costa Farms® your go-to source for information about trendy houseplants, colorful tropical plants, beautiful annuals, and long-lasting perennials

4 | costafarms.com

OUR STORY Love Plants? So do we! Costa Farms®, headquartered in Miami, Florida (AKA plant paradise!), is one of the largest horticultural growers in the world. Celebrating our 60th anniversary this year, we sprouted in 1961 when our founder, Jose Costa Sr., purchased 30 acres in Miami. Ever since, we’ve been growers and innovators. Costa Farms® has introduced many new houseplants to North American gardeners, including majesty palm, Norfolk Island pine, and Cecilia Aglaonema.

We now grow on more than 5,000 acres and offer more than 1,500 varieties of indoor and outdoor plants. We’re always working on putting together new plant collections and solutions that make it easier for home gardeners and retailers to make the world a better place with live plants. For example, our Trending Tropicals® collection brings trendy, hard-to-find houseplants to consumers at an affordable price. Our Exotic Angel® Plants brand of plants represents some of the most beautiful, interesting, and colorful varieties available as both small tabletop plants and hanging baskets. We’re equipped and happy to help you with your editorial needs.

Our Roots Run Deep As a fourth-generation family-run nursery, Costa Farms® understands and appreciates its connection to the earth. This includes many sustainability programs, including solar panels on several of our Miami, Florida, buildings; an integrated pest management program that employs biological controls (such as beneficial insects whenver possible); use of coconut coir instead of peat moss; and more.

We’re Constantly Innovating Costa Farms® embraces the spirit of innovation. Our research and development department tests hundreds of new annuals, perennials, and tropical plants every year. And our growers test new ways to grow our plants, always looking for the opportunity to improve quality.

More than Just a Farm Horticulture is the heart of our business, but we’re more than just a family farm. Here at Costa Farms®, we also employ engineers, marketing professionals, analysts, and other fields to ensure we offer the best solutions to our retail partners and the home gardeners that shop with them.

TRENDING TROPICALS® Hand selected by our team of experienced plant hunters, this collection of unique houseplants hails from locations around the world—including South America, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Some varieties in the Trending Tropicals® Collection are rare and available for a limited time. Our team works hard to stay ahead of trends. As we discover new, unique varieties we know plant parents will love, we’ll add them to the Trending Tropicals® Collection.

When houseplant enthusiasts think exotic, rare, and noteworthy, they first check out the Trending Tropicals® Collection lineup.

We source our plants from breeders and plant collectors who are as excited about these new discoveries as we are. All plants are collected ethically; we never take plants from the wild.

DID YOU KNOW? Costa Farms trials dozens of new plant varieties every year. To make it into our Trending Tropicals® collection, a plant has to grow well in the average home conditions, grow well for us in production, and hold up in shipping and on the shelf in stores. It also has to be approved by our trend watchers!

Varieties in the Spotlight Sterling Silver Scindapsus | Scindapsus treubii ‘Moonlight’ Native to Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia, Sterling Silver Scindapsus is a member of the aroid family (Araceae). It was selected by our Plant Hunter because it is such a durable indoor plant and has trendy silver tones on its dark green leaves.

Shingle Plant | Rhaphidophora hayi Shingle plant earned its common name because of the way it climbs. As it grows, it produces aerial roots along its stem that secure it to a vertical surface. Its foliage also tends to grow flat against the support, giving the effect of lush green roof shingles. It’s relatively slow growing, but can get several feet tall indoors.

Xanthosoma | Phyllotaenium lindenii Originating in the tropical rain forests of Colombia and Panama, this plant (also known as Caladium lindenii) shows off arrow-shaped leaves dramatically variegated in white. Beautiful when young, it becomes even more striking as it matures, producing more and larger leaves.

EXOTIC ANGEL® PLANTS The Exotic Angel® Plants collection has been around since 1971 and is a brand plant parents have come to know and love. Featuring more than 250 different varieties (some of which started as sports in our greenhouses that we’ve propagated and released), the collection is grown to exacting standards at our greenhouses in Apopka, Florida.

Among the varieties in the collection are super-popular pothos (like Manjula and Cebu Blue), hoyas, gesneriads (like alsobia, aeschynanthus, codononanthe, and episcia), and others plant collectors just can’t get enough of.

12 | costafarms.com

costafarms.com | 13

Varieties in the Spotlight Hoya | Hoya spp. It’s easy to see why plant parents are going crazy for hoyas. These low-water plants offer fantastic foliage, have low water needs, and produce fragrant flowers. We Love: Rope plant (Hoya compacta)

Nerve Plant | Fittonia spp. We grow more varieties of nerve plant than anyone else in North America. Named for their red, white, or pink variegation on the leaf veins, these easy-to-grow plants pack a lot of color in a small space. Plus they tolerate low light! We Love: Franke (Fittonia ‘Frankie’)

Pothos | Epipremnum spp. Golden pothos is a tried-and-true houseplant beloved for its low care needs and fast growth. We also produce a number of other hot varieties, including Manjula, Jessenia, and Pearls & Joy™. We Love: Cebu Blue (Epipremnum pinnatum ‘Cebu Blue’

Arrowhead Plant | Syngonium spp. A popular aroid (the trendiest plant family of the moment), arrowhead plant is named for its arrow-shaped leaves and variety of colors, which include pink, bronze, and white. We Love: Berry Allusion (Syngonium ‘Berry Allusion’)

Learn more about this collection here! 14 | costafarms.com

DID YOU KNOW? We do a lot of things a little differently with our Exotic Angel® Plants collection to ensure consistent quality.

We propagate most of our varieties from our stock of mother plants. That keeps our genetics superior. Take Marble Queen pothos, for example. Our growers select only the most highly variegated stems to propagate from, keeping our strain brighter than what you’ll see from other growers.

To help our plants acclimate easily to home conditions, we paint our greenhouses twice a year with white paint to limit the amount of light that comes through. That ensures plants don’t go into as much shock as they would if they were grown in a sunny greenhouse.

To ensure our pots look nice and full, we also use more cuttings per pot than the typical grower.

costafarms.com | 15

PLANTS OF STEEL® We put together the Plants of Steel® program to help beginners and those who haven’t had much experience with houseplants. They represent the varieties we grow that are most tolerant of a wide variety of growing conditions (including neglect).

One of the tests we put plants through is the “closet test.” They go into a closet with no light or water for two weeks—and have to come out looking in the same condition as they went in. Most can survive up to a month without water (if they have to; they all do best when watered regularly.) We have five varieties in the Plants of Steel® collection—ponytail palm, Chinese evergreen, ZZ plant, sago palm, and snake plant.

16 | costafarms.com

DID YOU KNOW? As a general rule, the slower a plant grows, the more durable it tends to be indoors? Another sign to look for that often points to a plants durability is the thickness of the leaf. The thicker the leaf, the better it tends to hold up when it dries out so it can survive longer periods without water.

costafarms.com | 17

The Five Plants of Steel® ZZ Plant | Zamioculcas zamiifolia ZZ plant features dark green, rubbery leaves that look like they’re made of plastic. It’s almost as tough as a faux plant, too! A relatively new houseplant, it wasn’t commonly available until the 1990s. There are a couple of varieties of ZZ, including Raven®, a signature member of our Trending Tropicals® Collection. Snake Plant | Sansevieria trifasciata A favorite for generations of gardeners (so you know it must be good!), snake plant is as trendy as it is tough thanks to its stiff, sword-like leaves and subtle variegation patterns. Different varieties may be banded or edged (or both) in gray, silver, or gold. Silvery ‘Moonshine’ is a particular favorite among today’s plant parents.

18 | costafarms.com

Chinese Evergreen | Aglaonema sp. We adore Chinese evergreen because it offers beautifully patterned leaves and is so wonderfully tolerant to a wide range of growing conditions. They’re beautiful as focal points and as accents to other houseplants. Note: Varieties that are primarily green fit in our Plants of Steel® collection; newer colorful varieties ship as Trending Tropicals®.

Ponytail Palm | Beaucarnea recurvata Ponytail palm’s best quality is how easy it is to grow: As long as you don’t overwater it, the plant may seem virtually indestructible. A small ponytail palm looks fabulous on tabletops; older specimens are striking floor plants. It has a clean appearance that makes it fantastic for contemporary and modern interior designs.

Sago Palm | Cycas Revoluta Sago palm is a living fossil! It’s virtually unchanged from prehistoric times. It shows off stiff, feathery fronds that feel like they’re made out of plastic. They grow from what looks like a a scaled bulb, making it a conversation piece in the home or office.

costafarms.com | 19

FOLIAGE Houseplants are hotter than ever. Thanks to Instagram they started to take off in 2017. The pandemic fueled even more growth in 2020, and we see no signs of that stopping.

It’s no wonder why. Indoor plants allow us to bring a touch of the outdoors in. They add life and beauty to any space (especially home offices). And numerous scientific studies point to health and wellness benefits, from reducing stress and improving our moods to increasing cognition (memory and concentration). Houseplants are also fantastic investments, growing bigger and more beautiful with time (and never look dated). You can’t say that about a throw pillow!

DID YOU KNOW? Anthurium is a natural air purifier! It’s been scientifically proven to scrub harmful chemicals and indoor air pollution from homes and offices.

Anthurium There’s a lot to love about anthuriums: They’re one of the relatively few houseplants that bloom well indoors (and have appreciable flowers). In warm, bright conditions, their flowers can last for months. And even when they’re not in bloom, their foliage looks fabulous.

We grow flowering anthuriums in a wide color range, from reds and pinks to white to chocolate purple to help plant parents add plants with easy-care color to their favorite spaces. Whether it’s as an accent in a home office or a fun splash of color in a kitchen or bathroom, Costa Farms®-grown anthuriums are ideal gifts and home decor essentials.

and have similar watering needs as the average houseplant. But they offer plant parents the opportunity for customization.

DID YOU KNOW? The word “Bon-sai” is a Japanese term that means “planted in a container”. It is an art form derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, then partly developed under the includence of Japannese Zen Buddhism.

Bromeliads Bromeliads are bold, stylish houseplants that work especially well in contemporary, modern, and tropical decor styles. Bromeliads have colorful, long-lasting blooms (which last for weeks) that contrast beautifully against the strappy green leaves. You’ll typically see them flower in shades of pink, red, orange, and yellow.

We see interest in this plant group rising because of their color, easy care needs, and chic look. They’re ideal additions to pieces on home decor trends, gift guides, and DIY projects.

26 | costafarms.com

Bromeliad Varieties in the Spotlight Guzmania Bromeliad | Guzmania spp. Guzmania is one of the most common bromeliads grown as a houseplant. It’s also one of the most stunning. Its green leaves are topped by clusters of red, orange, yellow, purple, or white flowers. Neoregelia Bromeliad | Neoregelia spp. Neoregelia bromeliads are grown more for their foliage than their flowers. Many feature new growth that comes out in bold tones of pink, red, purple, or orange. Vriesea Bromeliad | Vriesea spp. Vrisea bromeliads feature strappy green leaves (that may be variegated) from which rise colorful, cone-like flowers in festive shades.

DID YOU KNOW? In 2020, Costa Farms® acquired DeLeon’s Bromeliads, one of the country’s largest bromeliad growers. This has helped expand our selection of these colorful and easy-care plants.

costafarms.com | 27

Lucky Bamboo Like bonsai, lucky bamboo adds a soothing, Zen-like feel to the home or office. It’s a bit of a novelty plant because it can be grown in soil or water and the stems are often trained into fantastically intricate configurations. We grow more than 10 configurations here at Costa Farms®, and in five different sizes.

While it’s been grown for decades, lucky bamboo has largely been overlooked the last few years, making it a fresh addition to your editorial. It’s a must-have plant for the home office (or the regular office, once we start to return to corporate communities).

DID YOU KNOW? There’s symbolism in the number of stems used in a lucky bamboo arrangement? For example, three stems are said to represent happiness, five stems are said to represent wealth, and eight stems

28 | costafarms.com

represent good health.

DID YOU KNOW? Costa Farms® grows money tree in both tabletop and floor plant sizes (plus as a bonsai). This allows plant parents to enjoy it (and its contributions to Feng Shui to help encourage health, prosperity, and good fortune).

Money Tree Money tree (known botanically as Pachira aquatica) is a beautiful houseplant typically grown with braided trunks that give it an interesting, finished look that stands out in the home or office. Its brown trunks are topped by rich green compound hand-shaped leaves.

Larger specimens are particularly trendy and ideal for adding life to an empty corner, flanking a favorite piece of furniture, and next to the front door. Anywhere they’re placed, money trees make a space feel a bit more cozy.

costafarms.com | 29

Orchids Are Easy® Phalaenopsis orchids (also called moth orchids) are among the most stylish and sophisticated a consumer can grow. While they look exotic, phalaenopsis orchids are just as easy to care for as the typical houseplant. We recommend them to both beginners and experienced plant parents alike.

To help everyone understand that these orchids aren’t the finicky, fussy plants orchids often have a reputation for being, we’ve created the Orchids Are Easy® brand with simplified care tips.

Orchids are, of course, perfect for Valentine’s and Mother’s Day, but they’re also thoughtful gifts and elegant decor all year round.

30 | costafarms.com

DID YOU KNOW? Our Customer Care team gets a lot of questions about orchids from first-time orchid owners. The main question is that people are afraid their orchids have died after the flowers drop.

While the flowers can last for three months or more in a warm, bright place, each individual blossom does have a lifespan. Happily, with good care, a phalaenopsis orchid will naturally rebloom every year. Rebloom typically occurs in January or February (when a lot of gardeners are starved for color); cool night temperatures help induce flowering.

One tip you can offer consumers to help keep color after the flowers fall is to pair them with variegated plants like Colorful Aglaonema, Fittonia, or bromeliads that provide year-round interest and beauty.

costafarms.com | 31

CACTI & SUCCULENTS Cacti and succulents are an important category for us here at Costa Farms®. We’ve devoted a lot of resources to help ensure we’re growing the best-possible mix of varieties in the sizes consumers need to enjoy these plants indoors and out. We offer plants both individually and artfully arranged in dish gardens presented with fashionable pottery.

Our Plant Hunters also keep watch for new cacti and succulent varieties to introduce, so our research and development team is always testing something fresh and fun. We’re pleased with our cacti and succulent program now (and hope you are, too!), and are excited for the new developments we’ll be launching in the upcoming years.

32 | costafarms.com

costafarms.com | 33

Cacti We’ve seen interest in cacti continue to grow over the past decade. It’s no surprise why—the promise of sculptural plants that have low water needs helps attract new consumers to try indoor plants. And cacti offer experienced plant parents a textural counterpoint to the more lush and leafy plants in their collections.

Cacti are ideal for DIY projects like living walls, dish gardens, and open terrariums, as well as minimalist home decor stories. And despite their prickly reputation, they’re great for gift guides. After all, they are longlived plants that grow bigger and better every year.

34 | costafarms.com

Succulents A lot of different growers offer succulents.

Just like with our cacti collection, we

As with most Costa Farms® plants, we can provide quotes or interview from our growers, insights from our trends teams, and, of course, plant samples for your projects and photography needs.

DID YOU KNOW? Costa Farms® succulents are available in more than 2,000 stores across the United States and Canada? More than 40 different retailers offer our succulents, and they’re available both in-store and

Desert Gems® We developed Desert Gems® cacti as a way to help encourage new consumers to try indoor plants. With their candy-like colors and soft spines, Desert Gems® were a hit with college students and other Millennials who weren’t yet ready to become Plant Parents.

While they may not be the best choice for traditional garden editorial, Desert Gems® work well for gift guides and youth-oriented pieces. Their soft spines make them relatively friendly for childen, so Desert Gems® are good starter plants to build the next generation of houseplant enthusiasts.

36 | costafarms.com

DID YOU KNOW? Wondering where the color comes from? We have a special process that adds color to the cacti’s spines (much like fingernail polish just covers the fingernails). As such, the artificial color doesn’t inhibit the plant’s photosynthesis or respiration processes.

HOLIDAY As the largest grower of Norfolk Island pines on the planet, Costa Farms® kicks off the holiday season in November with this tropical tree, as well as Christmas cactus, poinsettia, and other offerings.

In addition to tips for growing and keeping holiday plants happy, our team can share ideas for decorating with plants, and help create offerings for practically every gift guide.

Top Holiday Houseplants Norfolk Island Pine | Araucaria heterophylla An easy-care houseplant, Norfolk Island pine is a festive holiday plant that can be enjoyed all year long. During the holidays, its needled branches look right at home decorated as a Christmas tree. After the holidays pass, consumers can remove the decorations and enjoy its classic look (and air-purifying powers) anywhere in the home.

Poinsettias | Euphorbia pulcherrima Our research and development team trials dozens of new poinsettia varieties from plant breeders around the world every year. While red still reigns supreme, we’re seeing increasing interest in pink, white, and variegated varieties. Novelty colors, like orange and yellow, haven’t yet had their breakout moment, but we see it coming.

Christmas Cactus | Schlumbergera spp. Christmas cactus is one of the most colorful flowering houseplants. This easy-care grower bursts into bloom when the days get short, putting on a fabulous show during the holiday season. You can find Christmas cactus in a wide variety of colors, including pink, red, scarlet, orange, gold, cream, and white -as well as bicolors where an individual flower shows multiple shades at the same time.

costafarms.com | 41

COSTA DEL SOL® While Costa Farms® may be known for houseplants, we also grow a ton of outdoor tropicals. Two of our biggest crops are hibiscus and mandevilla.

Costa del Sol® is our collection of premium varieties. We have two lines of exclusive Hibiscus varieties (including HibisQs®, from Graff breeding in Denmark) perfect for containers and landscape gardens. We’ve tested hundreds of mandevilla varieties, and continue to trial new varieties, to ensure we’re offering the best.

Note: You’ll also see this collection sold as Tropic Escape® at Lowe’s stores and Island BloomsTM at Walmart stores. 42 | costafarms.com

costafarms.com | 43

Mandevilla Bold and showy, mandevilla makes a dramatic statement in landscapes and container gardens. This tropical bears a nonstop supply of large, trumpetshaped blooms in shades of red, pink, and white. It’s also lovely in landscape beds and borders—and is frequently used to climb up and over arbors, trellises, and mailboxes.

Mandevilla thrives in hot, humid conditions, blooming nonstop, with flowers in shades of red, pink, and white. It’s available in two forms—a climbing vine and a low, 18x18-inch mound.

Note: We can share mandevilla plant samples from February to May. We usually sell out by June.

DID YOU KNOW? Mandevilla contain a thick, milky sap that makes them deer and rabbit resistant. Mandevilla are colorful solutions for hot, dry decks and patios, porches, and garden beds

and borders.

DID YOU KNOW? You’ll most commonly find Hibiscus blooming in shades of red, pink, yellow, and orange, but there are also purple, lavender-blue, white, and bicolor varieties available. Some also have variegated foliage that adds appeal.

Tropical Hibiscus Few plants offer the tropical touch of tropical hibiscus. These sunloving plants feature bold, flowers in a dazzling array of colors. Our exclusive HibisQs® varieties feature excellent branching—meaning they produce more flowers on a fuller plant than older varieties. While most flowers last a single day, HibisQs® flowers can stay open two or three days in mild temperatures. costafarms.com | 45

BLOOMING TROPICALS You can come to Costa Farms® for a variety of beautiful tropical shrubs that make excellent companions to our premium hibiscus and mandevilla varieties. They include: ■ Allamanda ■ Dipladenia ■ Firebush (Hamelia) ■ Gardenia ■ Ixora ■ Jasmine ■ Oleander ■ Ruellia ■ Shrimp Plant (Justicia) ■ Tecoma ■ Tecomaria ■ Texas sage (Leucophyllum) ■ Thyrallis (Galphimia)

46 | costafarms.com

costafarms.com | 47

Varieties in the Spotlight Firebush | Hamelia patens There’s a lot to love about this Florida native shrub. It blooms almost constantly, producing orange tube-shaped flowers adored by butterflies and hummingbirds. In frost-free regions, it’s a must-have addition to the landscape; in areas with cool winters, firebush is a perfect option for trendy pollinator plantings.

Star Jasmine | Trachelospermum A subtropial showoff that features fragrant white flowers and glossy green foliage, star jasmine adds a romantic feel anywhere it’s planted. Bonus: It’s hardy to USDA Zone 8, so its evergreen foliage can be enjoyed even in areas where the temperature drops to 10 ̊F.

48 | costafarms.com

Jungle Flame | Ixora Nicknamed jungle flame for its hydrangea-like flowerheads in shades of red, pink, orange, yellow, and white, this tropical shrub is a mainstay in South Florida and other areas. A fresh find for more northerly areas, it adds color (and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds) all summer long as a container plant or landscape annual.

Cape Honeysuckle | Tecomaria Cape honeysuckle hits a lot of consumer needs: It tolerates heat and humidity, it’s deer- and rabbit-resistant, it flowers continuously, and is loved by butterflies and hummingbirds. It produces blooms in flamboyant shades of red and orange, and the finely divided foliage adds a textural contrast to other plantings around it.

Texas Sage | Leucophyllum This easy-care subtropical shrub is deer-resistant, heat- and droughttolerant, and shows off trendy silvery foliage that makes it a great garden neutral that pairs well with any other plants. It thrives in hot, sunny spots and makes a striking container specimen with annuals, perennials, or other tropicals.

costafarms.com | 49

PALMS & TOPIARY Palms add instant ambiance to every deck or patio. They’re an inexpensive, yet stylish, way to provide privacy, screen a view, or create a focal point.

We grow a variety of palms, but majesty palm of Madagascar is our biggest seller. This lush, leafy beauty thrives in hot, humid conditions, making it a summertime standout on its own or in mixed containers with annuals or other tropicals.

We also grow eugenia topiary pruned to a variety of shapes, with the three-ball topiary (the foliage pruned into three spheres stacked vertically) being the most popular. These tropical shrubs are ideal for projects that have a formal or whimsical flair.

50 | costafarms.com

DID YOU KNOW? We grow our majesty palms from seed harvested in Madagascar. It takes more than two years in our shade houses for a seed to grow into the size of plant you see at your local garden center.

costafarms.com | 51

DESERT ESCAPE Desert Escape® makes landscaping oh-so easy! This is our collection of cacti and succulents grown for outdoor use—beds and borders, container gardens, etc. We offer this collection in a variety of sizes, from six-packs to 10-inch-wide pots, giving home gardeners a range of options to decorate their favorite sunny spaces with textural, high-style, but low-water plants. They’re also ideal for outdoor DIY projects.

52 | costafarms.com

costafarms.com | 53

Varieties in the Spotlight Desert Rose | Adenium The most striking member of our collection, this tropical beauty offers clusters of large, mandevilla-like flowers atop stems of lush leaves that grow from a thick, bonsailike caudex. While it doesn’t bloom continuously like an annual, it does cycle through the summer. It’s also deer- and rabbit-resistant.

Echeveria Perhaps the most popular succulent around, echeveria varieties have fleshy leaves that grow from a tight rosette. We offer numerous varieties, including types with green, silver, and purple-flushed leaves, as well as some that have ruffled leaf edges. Echeveria produce flowers, too, when they’re happy. These blossoms most commonly appear in shades of orange or yellow and look like little bells that hang above the low foliage.

Euphorbia | Euphorbia trigona Euphorbia trigona (which comes in both green and red) is invaluable for adding height, structure, and texture to plantings. Its upright stems are decorated with little leaves that fall off as they age, giving plant an interesting cactuslike look without appearing too stark.
