Cabo Roig Market gets set for summer

The Orihuela City Council has officially announced the call for the management of the ‘flea market’ located

on Paseo Aguamarina and Calle Cielo, known as Cabo Roig Strip in Orihuela Costa. This significant contract

entails the organisation and administration of the bustling non-fixed market, renowned as a tourist attraction throughout the vibrant summer season.

Commencing from 15th June and concluding on 30th September, the evening market will be open for trade from 7pm to 12am, encompassing 29 stalls within an expansive area measuring 190 square meters. Crucially, the market’s layout must adhere to designated dimensions without encroaching upon the existing terraces of the bars, restaurants and businesses that line the strip.

These vibrant stalls offer an eclectic array of goods, ranging from jewellery to artisanal and craft treasures, and are required to maintain high standards of cleanliness and organisation. The overarching aim is to foster an environment of orderly and regulated trade, ensuring a harmonious coexistence between residents, tourists, and local businesses amid the summer festivities.

The successful bidder will

assume responsibility for the selection, arrangement, and installation of stalls, as well as the allocation of spaces to vendors. Additional duties encompass fee collection, filling vacant positions, and provision of a dedicated portable toilet facility exclusively for merchants. Administrative tasks, including staffing and cleaning duties, also fall under the remit of the chosen contractor.

An annual fee of at least 10,700 euros has been allocated, payable to the City Council by the successful

bidder. Initially spanning two years, with provision for extension up to an additional two years, the contract allows for a maximum concession period of four years.

This fee structure has been carefully calculated, factoring in anticipated revenues of 39,150 euros generated by the 29 positions during the summer months, offset against estimated expenses totalling 21,317 euros. Expenditures include the employment of administrative and cleaning staff, installation and maintenance of sanitation facilities, and the provision of public liability insurance.

The Councillor for Markets, Noelia Grao, emphasised the creation of this initiative follows previous experiences aimed at addressing what used to be a disorganised market presence, which occasionally posed inconveniences to pedestrians. Noting the area’s bustling ambiance, characterised by a plethora of bars and an influx of tourists. She underlined the importance of maintaining the equilibrium between market vendors and established businesses.

With the official call for management bids now underway, anticipation mounts for the selection of a capable contractor tasked with overseeing this pivotal summer marketplace in Orihuela Costa.

Environmentalists call for Cala Mosca work to stop

In a recent development, the Save Cala Mosca Association has lodged a formal complaint with Seprona, the Orihuela City Council, and the Ministry, alleging that a construction company is failing to protect the Tudorella mauretanica mollusk, which has been declared endangered. The construction project in question aims to build 2,200 homes on a bluff, potentially threatening the habitat of this vulnerable species.

The neighbourhood and conservation group has urged the City Council to halt the construction temporarily so that a study can be conducted on the distribution area and the delineation of a fauna reserve. This measure is intended to prevent the destruction of a significant portion of theTudorella mauretanica population. According to the association, previous resolutions from the department mandated the construction company to delineate a distribution area and integrate it into a future fauna reserve, yet these measures are allegedly not being adhered to.

Members of Save Cala Mosca, along with a renowned biologist and zoologist specialising

in terrestrial mollusks, Alberto Martínez-Ortí, have observed actions being taken that threaten the natural vegetation where the mollusks are found. They have raised concerns about the imminent clearing of the area, which could result in the destruction of a significant part of the snail population.

The Tudorella mauretanica is classified as a vulnerable species, and the urbanization of the sector where it resides is contingent upon implementing protective measures. However, the association claims that the construction company is not complying with environmental impact declarations, prompting their call for a halt to construction until the protection of this endangered population is assured.

Previous resolutions in 2018 and 2022 mandated measures to protect endangered species affected by the construction project, including the Tudorella mauretanica and the cat’s head jarilla plant. Despite assurances from the construction company regarding preservation efforts, concerns persist regarding the survival of these species in the face of

urbanisation.

The association has submitted a technical report emphasising the importance of protecting the Tudorella mauretanica, citing urban pressure as the primary threat to its survival. They argue that the current environmental impact declarations do not adequately safeguard the species’ habitat, putting it at risk of extinction in the area.

In response to these allegations, the development agent has stated that they are unaware of the complaint but asserts that preservation measures outlined in the approved urbanisation project are being strictly followed. They claim to be undertaking environmental recovery work in coordination with relevant authorities.

The ongoing dispute underscores the delicate balance between development and conservation, particularly concerning endangered species and their habitats. As efforts to address environmental concerns continue, stakeholders remain vigilant in safeguarding biodiversity in the region.

Ministry bans use of phones in schools

The Ministry of Education has officially prohibited the use of mobile phones in schools, and it is effective now. Starting yesterday, Monday 6th May, the Generalitat Valenciana will prohibit the use of mobile phones in educational centres in the Valencian Community. The announcement was made in a public appearance by the Minister of Education, José Antonio Rovira, together with Bartolomé Pérez, the head of the Autonomous Office of Mental Health and Addictions of the Valencian Community.

There will only be two exceptions to the regulation, when the phone is needed for educational use or for health reasons. Students will be able to carry their mobile phone, but it has to be turned off. It will be the schools that regulate how they withdraw it and when they return it

when this rule is broken. Until now the school had been given total autonomy to regulate the use of phones on the premises.

The new regulations have been published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana.

Big banks plan to merge

On 30th April Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A. (BBVA) initiated discussions on a merger proposal with Banco Sabadell SA, igniting talks on the consolidation of the European banking sector. If successful, the merger between BBVA and Banco Sabadell would propel BBVA into an elite league of eurozone banks boasting assets exceeding $1 trillion (€940bn). This strategic move would position BBVA as the third-largest eurozone bank by market value, trailing only behind behemoths such as BNP Paribas and Banco Santander SA.

While the finer details of the proposed merger remain undisclosed, industry analysts like Chris Hallam from Goldman Sachs foresee substantial benefits stemming from synergies between BBVA and Banco Sabadell, particularly in Spain where both banks have a significant presence. Hallam anticipates potential revenue and cost synergies, fueled by overlapping business operations.

Projections based on 2023 data suggest that the merger could potentially augment

BBVA’s revenues and net profit by 17%, accompanied by a remarkable 40% surge in loans and a 22% increase in risk-weighted assets.

However, Hallam also acknowledges the hurdles associated with cross-border mergers within the eurozone, citing stringent regulatory frameworks and integration complexities as significant challenges. Historically, such challenges have favoured inmarket consolidations over large-scale cross-border mergers.

The proposed merger between BBVA and Banco Sabadell occurs against a backdrop of noteworthy market performance by smaller eurozone banks compared to their larger counterparts since the onset of the year.

Shares of Banco Sabadell have witnessed a remarkable surge of nearly 60% in the initial four months of the year.

Similarly, smaller Italian banks such as BPER Banca SpA and Banco BPM SpA, among others, have experienced substantial market rallies, despite none of them boasting market caps exceeding €10 billion or total assets surpassing €250 billion.

In contrast, bank mergers and acquisitions (M&A) activity witnessed a subdued performance in 2023, hitting its lowest levels in at least six years. However, industry forecasts predict a resurgence in European bank M&A activity in 2024, propelled by easing inflationary pressures and reduced valuations, particularly in sectors like fintech and advisory services, according to S&P Global.

As the financial sector teeters on the brink of transformative changes, attention is also drawn to larger players like Deutsche Bank, rumoured to be eyeing potential acquisitions of ABN AMRO and Commerzbank, notwithstanding reservations expressed by their CEO regarding merger pursuits in 2024.

The proposed merger between BBVA and Banco Sabadell stands as a potential catalyst for consolidation within the eurozone banking landscape. It underscores the growing imperative for scale in Europe’s financial realm and reflects a broader strategic realignment driven by competitive dynamics and technological advancements.

Two men arrested

a

ter a fi t in olores

On the morning of last Saturday, after receiving a notice from the Emergency Coordination Center, agents from the Dolores Local Police intervened, together with the Civil Guard, in a fight between two men on San Isidro Street.

Once the fight was contained, several units of the Judicial Police of the Civil Guard arrived at the scene, as well as the health services that treated the men for the injuries allegedly suffered, and since no type of weapon was found at the scene, the use of glass from the vehicle windows of one of those involved.

After the event, there were several publications on social networks that warned of a

fight with stab wounds in a location in the municipality. In relation to this event, the mayor of Dolores, Joaquín Hernández, has denied through a publication the statements made, considering it necessary for the Local Police to clarify the facts by publishing what happened. Likewise, Hernández has stated that “Dolores is a safe town to live in, since it is average, or below, the crime rates of Vega Baja.” In the same way, he ended his letter requesting the cessation of false publications with a clear political message.

National Police bolsters coastal Immigration Office

The National Police has announced the reinforcement of the Immigration Office situated within the Security and Emergency Centre in Orihuela Costa. This initiative aims to ramp up the issuing of documents for foreign citizens. Starting in May, the office, located in La Zenia and operated in collaboration with the Orihuela City Council, forecasts processing up to 10,000 documents annually.

Acknowledging the needs of the significant foreign population along the Orihuela coast and its economic impact on the Vega Baja region.

This newly strengthened office is linked to the Immigration and Borders Brigade of the Orihuela Police Station, serving as a supplementary unit to the primary office on Calle Sol 34 in Orihuela for documents required by foreign citizens.

In March, the City Council provided essential resources to establish an increased service, aiming to double document production for foreign citizens. Additionally, computer resources have been installed by the Department of Modernisation.

The primary objective of this office is to process 10,000 documents annually, including assignments of Foreigner Identification Numbers (NIE), Certificates of Membership of the European Union (CUE), NIE concordance certificates, residence certificates, and NIE duplicates.

Furthermore, in February, the Documentation Office of the National Police Station in Orihuela received reinforcement through the installation of a new fingerprinting station for the issuing of foreign identification cards (TIE).

Mónica Pastor, the Councillor for Citizen Security, emphasised the significance of this new National Police service point, citing its contribution to reducing displacement and alleviating existing lengthy waiting lists. “Not only will the number of documents issued double, but procedures will also be streamlined, such as in the case of acquiring a new house,” she explained.

Council Rejects plans for waste treatment plant in Torremendo

In a recent announcement, the Orihuela City Council has rmly rejected plans to establish a waste treatment plant for the Vega Baja region near the district of Torremendo.

Mayor Pepe Vegara emphasised that while acknowledging the necessity for such a treatment facility, it will not nd its place in Torremendo. The Orihuela City Council is actively exploring alternative locations for the plant in coordination with the Urban Planning department. These sites will be presented to the Vega Baja Waste Management Consortium. Criteria for selection include optimal geographical

positioning, equidistance from all towns, proximity to highways such as the CV-95, and compliance with all necessary regulations for safe operation. The proposed areas under consideration will house a recovery plant with waste disposal capabilities, thereby eliminating the need for a land ll. This initiative is projected to create approximately 70 employment opportunities while also delivering substantial cost savings of nearly two million euros for the municipality of Orihuela.

More than 100 arrested for the “son in distress” telephone scam

The Civil Guard has arrested 102 people throughout Spain between the provinces of Alicante, Barcelona, Girona, Granada, Madrid, Málaga and Valencia for the “son in distress” telephone scam. The modus operandi was to pose as a son in trouble who asked them for money. The group got the victims to make transfers between 800 and 55,000 euros. The 102 detainees are attributed with swindling more than 850,000 euros from 238 victims.

The first complaints were received at the end of 2022 in the province of Alicante. The Civil Guard has located more than 500 bank accounts of different entities used by scammers to transfer money from the scams. More than 100 telephone lines that had been registered using false identities to commit fraud through mobile messaging have also been analyzed.

The perpetrators operated throughout Spain and laundered the stolen money by making payments in all types of businesses and with cash withdrawals at ATMs. The Civil Guard, once the suspects were located, began the exploitation of the operation, which had to be carried out in several phases given its magnitude.

In the first phase, carried out in February 2024, 12 people were arrested in Granada and 29 in Malaga. Between February and March, two people were arrested in Alicante, three in Valencia and 13 in Madrid. Finally, in the third phase at the end of April,

35 people were arrested in Barcelona and another eight in Girona.

The organization was made up of 74 men and 28 women between the ages of 20 and 60. They are charged with the crimes of fraud, money laundering and belonging to a criminal organization. The proceedings have been made available to the Investigating Court of Torrevieja, which is hearing the case.

The investigation has been carried out by the Alicante Civil Guard Team, with the collaboration of the Telematic

The “distressed son” scam is a fraud that exploits the trust of victims who are manipulated to obtain money. First, they study the profile of potential harmed people, with the common factor of having an emancipated child, studying abroad or traveling. They then contact their target person on WhatsApp posing as

their son or daughter. To justify the phone number from which they contact is not the usual one, they claim that they have a problem with their phone. Conversations begin with a personal greeting, creating an emotional connection and convey urgency with messages of desperation. Once attention has been captured and trust has been established, they report that they have a problem that has arisen that they must solve immediately and to do so they need money but they cannot access their bank account. Therefore, they need the victim to make an urgent transfer to the account number that the false children provide them. The power of conviction of the scammers is such that, in most cases, they get the injured party to make continuous transfers of large amounts of money.

GBP

It’s been a quiet data week for GBP ahead of the Early May Bank Holiday weekend, with today’s (Friday 3rd May) services industry data serving as the most notable. The UK service sector marginally beat forecasts, recording a reading of 55.0, noted as “a robust and accelerated upturn in business activity during April, supported by a renewed strengthening of order books.”

With key data releases in short supply this week, the market has shifted its focus to growth forecasts. The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) signalled the sobering prediction that the UK will be the slowest-growing G7 economy in 2025. The think-tank also reduced its projection for the year ahead, citing an expectation of 0.4% “sluggish” economic growth in 2024, having previously published a forecast of 0.7% in February.

Next week, the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee will meet on Thursday and vote on the o cial bank rate for the third time this year. A poll by City A.M. has revealed 57% of 21 economists surveyed estimate the BOE will start cutting rates in August, while 38% expect the rst reduction in June. Current market expectations are for a sixth consecutive hold of the central bank’s base rate, at 5.25%.

GBP / EUR UPDATE

EUR It’s been a busier week of data releases for the Eurozone. On Tuesday, a slew of economic releases were published, starting with the German Consumer Price Index (CPI), which con rmed a reading of 2.2% on Tuesday. This represents no change from March but a dip from 2.5% in February.

A few hours later came growth forecasts from the Eurozone’s three other major economies, all of which beat their forecasts and contributed to the Eurozone posting growth of 0.3% between January and March.

Welcome news for the ECB following two successive quarters of a 0.1% contraction.

Additionally, core in ation reduced from 2.9% to 2.7%, and headline in ation remained unchanged at 2.4% (0.4% o the ECB’s 2% target). This supports data released from Bloomberg last Friday (26th April), which inferred a possible stall in the slowdown of in ation for the rst time this year.

The ECB’s next rate decision meeting is on June 6th, which also marks the start of the European Parliament elections.

A man and his dog die in a house fire in San i uel de Salinas

A tragic incident unfolded last week in San Miguel de Salinas, where a 57-year-old man and his dog lost their lives in a house fire.

Firfighters from the Torrevieja station promptly responded to the distress call received at 12:03 p.m. The Local Police and Civil Guard had already attempted entry into the property on Los Rosales Street in the Mirador del Mediterráneo urbanization. However, the intensity of the smoke hindered their efforts, necessitating the arrival of firefighters.

Upon arrival, the firefighters initiated rescue operations to extract the man and his dog from the premises. Despite resuscitation attempts, including those by the CICU medical team, both succumbed to smoke inhalation.

The victim, a Spanish national, was significantly dependent due to mental incapacity and resided with his absent brother.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire originated accidentally in the kitchen-living room area of the bungalow-style home. However, authorities,

including the Judicial Police of the Torrevieja Civil Guard and a specialized fire investigation team, will conduct a thorough inquiry into the incident’s origin and circumstances.

The fire, which caused substantial damage, was visible externally due to the dense smoke emanating from the engulfed structure, resulting in the collapse of the roof. Consequently, firefighting efforts were arduous owing to the intense heat and thick smoke.

Spain to end reduced on ood grocery prices expected to rise

Spain is poised to bid farewell to the reduced Value Added Tax (VAT) on food this summer, potentially triggering an increase in grocery prices nationwide. The Spanish government has disclosed plans to terminate the reduced VAT rate on essential food items by 30th June, a measure initially introduced last year to alleviate the impact of escalating food costs. Initially rolled out in December, the 0% VAT rate applied to staple necessities such as milk, bread, eggs, cheese, fruits, vegetables, cereals, and olive oil. Additionally, the tax reduction from 10% to 5% on pasta was extended for an additional six months. However, with the economy exhibiting signs of stability, authorities have communicated to Brussels their intention to gradually phase out these crisis measures. While policymakers may not foresee a substantial impact on the average consumer, many households are expected to feel

the strain, given the persistent upward trajectory of everyday grocery prices. In 2023, food prices surged by nearly 20%, with olive oil prices experiencing a staggering increase of over 70%, rendering numerous products unattainable for some shoppers. Despite inflation beginning to stabilize towards the end of last year, the overall

cost of living in Spain remains 3.2% higher than in 2022. Even with the reduced VAT rate in effect, the food sector has borne the brunt of inflation, propelled by escalating production costs and supply shortages stemming from the conflict in Ukraine, as well as diminished harvests due to drought and high temperatures.

National Police arrests jewelry store robber

Agents of the National Police have arrested a man in Orihuela as the alleged perpetrator of the robbery of a jewelry store where he stole a palette of jewelry after intimidating the worker with a screwdriver. The detainee, 38 years old and of Spanish nationality, was placed at the disposal of the Investigative Court on duty in the same town.

The events occurred late in the afternoon, when the worker at the jewelry establishment was closing, a moment that the perpetrator of the robbery took advantage of to enter the jewelry store when the access door was open and, although the employee tried to prevent When she entered, he threatened her with a screwdriver and managed, through intimidation, to get inside the counter and get hold of a palette of jewelry with which he fled the place, but not before a struggle occurred with the victim who tried to prevent the theft. However, the author did not count on the fact that several citizens, upon realizing the robbery, would mobilize to try to prevent the crime, managing to snatch the loot that he stole while he ran away from the scene.

According to one of the witnesses, the man, during the escape, seemed to be approaching a specific vehicle in which he was looking for what appeared to be the vehicle keys in his pockets. However, it seems that he did not have them with him, since during the escape he had lost them, and they were picked up by the victim himself who saw how they fell. Thus, the author had no choice but to continue his chaotic escape at a run, until he entered a property where his pursuers, three citizens, could not follow him.

The witnesses who were chasing him could see how the man, while running, was getting rid of articles of clothing to avoid being identified by his clothing, not taking into account that one of his pursuers managed to take a photograph that he later provided to the agents.

Thus, the agents were deployed throughout the area, first attending to the victim and collecting data on site. Next, they managed to locate the vehicle of the elusive perpetrator, thanks to the victim’s instructions, which led them to determine his full identification, continuing with the search

for him in the area. With all this information, the only thing left was to locate him, which did not take long to happen when we finally found him on the city’s Station Avenue, where he was arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime of robbery with intimidation.

The fact has been completely clarified, since not only was the offender arrested and all of the stolen jewelry was recovered, but the weapon used by him to intimidate the employee of the establishment, a screwdriver that was sent, was also recovered. as evidence to the court along with everything that was done. The detainee, 38 years old and of Spanish nationality, was placed at the disposal of the Investigative Court on duty in the same town.

Citizen collaboration is essential to report any criminal act, for this reason the National Police makes several communication channels available to any citizen through the telephone number 091 , the official website of the National Police www. policia .es or the AlertCops mobile application .

Retired RN Sailors support local Age Concern Charity

As part of the ongoing annual support of local charities, the Shipmates (Members) of the Torrevieja Branch of the Royal Naval Association (RNATB), were pleased to make a donation this year to the local Age Concern.

Each year at the RNATB AGM, Shipmates nominate and vote for preferred charities to receive donations from funds collected during the year.

Age Concern was nominated by the RNATB Shipmates not only because they believe and appreciate the service they provide to the mature UK expats living in the local area, but also as a special thank-you to the Melody Makers, who perform in aid of their designated charity of Age Concern, and who provided a tremendous rendition of Christmas Carols to the shipmates and guests for the rst hour at the RNATB Christmas Dinner and Dance in December 2023.

The donation was presented

to the local Age Concern Centre Manager, Rita Blades by the RNATB Chairman, Tony Jenkins and present were Shirely Watmough, one of the Age Concern Volunteers and RNATB Treasurer, Carl Louden and the RNATB Organiser Locum, Maureen Jenkins was taking the photos.

Age Concern Costa Blanca Sur is a nonpro t making charity registered with the Generalitat Valenciana in 1998, charity Number 6301.

Their geographical area covers from south of the City of Alicante

down to the Murcia border and inland to Vega Baja with the aim of gaining public recognition to chart the way forward for the over 50s and secure a positive role in society for the older generation with like-minded organisations, while rationalise bene ts/ subventions for expatriates. “How do I get a GB Pound symbol on my Spanish keyboard”?

If you have a number keypad

on the right of your keyboard (or your laptop keyboard has a number lock) you can use Alt Codes to enter characters into any text.

Press Num Lock and “Press and Hold” the Alt key and select 156 on the number keypad.

For other characters you need that are not on your keyboard then search the internet for the Alt Code for that character. For example, the Alt Code for the Euro symbol is 128

If you don’t have a number keypad. Search the Internet for the £ symbol. Highlight and copy it into a text file on your computer (for future use). As you have copied the £ symbol you can now paste this into any text. You can add other characters unavailable on your keyboard to the text file.

“I have inherited an iPad which is locked with a PIN. I do not know the PIN. What can I do”?

Unless you know the PIN there is no way to access the iPad unless you restore it to Factory Settings. This can be done using iTunes on a computer.

Remove the passcode on an iPad that has a home button

1. Make sure that your iPad isn’t connected to your computer.

2. Press and hold the Top button until the power off slider appears. Drag the slider to turn off your iPad. Then connect your iPad to your computer while holding the home button. Keep holding the home button until you see the recovery mode screen.

Restore your iPad

1. Locate your iPad on your computer. When you see the option to Restore or Update, choose Restore. iTunes will download software for your iPad. If it takes more than 15 minutes, your iPad will exit recovery mode and you’ll need to repeat the steps above to remove your passcode.

If you can’t restore or update your iPad using recovery mode, or you can’t use recovery mode because of broken or stuck buttons, contact Apple Support. Without knowledge of the previous owners’ Apple ID and other personal details, you will not be able to use this iPad.

Spain’s airport operator sees profits soar

The surge in tourism across Spain has propelled Aena, the airport operator, to achieve signi cant nancial gains. According to recent data, Aena recorded a net pro t of 261 million euros in the rst quarter of this year, nearly doubling the 133.6 million euros earned during the same period last year.

During the initial three months of 2024, Aena saw a substantial increase in gross operating pro t (Ebitda), reaching 581 million euros, with a margin of 47%.

This marks a 60% surge compared to 2023 gures, which stood at 368.6 million euros. The inclusion of the Eleven Brazilian Airports Block (BOAB) bolstered Aena’s revenues by 44 million euros, contributing 25.3 million euros to Ebitda, as highlighted by the Spanish company.

In terms of passenger tra c, the Aena group, encompassing Spain, London-Luton, and the

airports in Northeast Brazil along with the eleven airports of the Eleven Airports Block of Brazil, witnessed an uptick to 74.6 million passengers, representing an 11.9% increase from 2023. This growth was predominantly fueled by heightened tra c at Spanish airports, which saw a 13.2% rise, totaling 60.8 million passengers.

The total revenues for Aena from January to March surged to 1.233 billion euros, marking a 20% increase compared to the rst quarter of the previous

Aena’s consolidated accounting net nancial debt decreased to 5.793 billion euros from 6.222 billion euros in 2023, resulting in a decrease in the consolidated group’s net nancial debt to Ebitda ratio to 1.79 times.

Government approves new social media ‘influencers law’ in Spain

The Spanish government has passed a new law known as the ‘in uencer law,’ aiming to regulate content creators and establish a legal framework for their activities. José Luis Escrivá, the Minister for Digital Transformation, revealed this decision following cabinet meetings on Tuesday, April 30. This legislation seeks to enhance consumer protection, particularly focusing on minors, while also providing content creators with legal clarity.

The law de nes “users of special relevance,” or in uencers, based on three criteria: income, online activity, and follower count. In uencers are identi ed as those earning over 300,000 euros annually, with at least one million followers on a single platform or two million across multiple platforms, and those who share 24 or more videos per year. Those meeting these

criteria must register within two months in the State Register of Audiovisual Providers as users of special relevance and comply with regulations regarding minors’ protection and advertising.

While speci c obligations are yet to be fully outlined, Minister Escrivá emphasized a

focus on safeguarding minors. In uencers will be required to label content according to age appropriateness and disclose advertisements. Additionally, they are prohibited from promoting ads that could harm minors psychologically or physiologically.

Gavin And Stacey IS returning for its last ever episode on Christmas Day and the news has been praised as the ‘best news ever’ by overjoyed fans.

Show creators James Corden and Ruth Jones shocked the BBC sitcom’s millions of viewers on Friday with the news they have written the nal episode.

The pair reunited in secret to pen the special after recently denying another episode was in the works, nearly ve years after the last episode aired in 2019.

The Morning’s Gyles Brandreth has revealed he ‘blames himself’ for the death of legendary TV entertainer Rod Hull.

Rod, who was famed for his emu attacks on Michael Parkinson and several other famous faces, tragically died in 1999 after falling from the roof of his bungalow and su ering a severe skull fracture and chest injuries.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

ITV star and former MP Gyles, 76, has now revealed that days earlier Rod had been complaining to him about his awful TV connection and he ‘encouraged’ him to ‘get a ladder’ and climb on the roof.

Gyles admitted he feels responsible for his friend’s death after he took his advice while watching a Champions League match between Manchester United and Inter Milan, at half-time. Speaking on his Rosebud podcast, Gyles admitted: ‘I killed a man - it was Rod Hull, the emu man.

‘We were at the theatre, we were at the rst night of Animal Crackers - i

it was a show about the Marx brothers.

‘Terrible, terrible weather that night. And he was sitting next to me, and he was complaining all through the show - was interrupting the show almostgoing on about how he wanted to get home because he wanted to watch the football, but his Sky aerial wasn’t transmitting properly.

‘And I said, “Don’t moan about it, if you want to watch the television get a ladder out, climb on to the roof, and x it Rod”.

‘And after the show, in this stormy weather, he went home, he got out a ladder, he climbed the ladder, and he tried to x the aerial.

‘Unfortunately the wind was very great and he fell backwards o the ladder and killed himself.

‘So I wasn’t actually there, but I’d encouraged him.’

Rod was 63 when he died and the incident was declared as accidental by an inquest.

The former Big Brother housemate, 49, who replaced Matt Lucas as a co-host of the much-loved show, explained how she now has a strict rule on cake tasting.

After nally losing the excess 14lbs in weight, lming for Bake O ’s upcoming series has begun, and

Alison is determined to not yo-yo once again.

The TV presenter originally said she only agreed to join the show in the 2023 series ‘for the cake’ - but now she’s realised she has to curb the tasty treats.

Alison has decided to self-impose a limit of sampling only winners’ creations and those bakes which are awarded Paul Hollywood’s famous handshakes.

British brands Barbour and Specsavers join forces to launch exclusive collection

This spring, Specsavers has partnered with British heritage lifestyle brand Barbour to launch an exclusive collection of optical and sunglasses frames and this collection is now available in all nine Specsavers Ópticas stores in Spain.

With a fresh twist on classic shapes, the collection is inspired by Barbour’s modern countryside style and features colours and patterns inspired by the great British outdoors.

The new collection features 13 optical frames and 3 sunglasses for both men and women, as well as 4 kids frames. Each perfectly encapsulates the brand’s iconic style and timeless look. The premium crafted and durable designs take cues from Barbour’s renowned wax jackets through the understated use of tartan and houndstooth prints in a variety of timeless eyewear shapes.

The Barbour story began in 1894 in the coastal town of South Shields in the North East of England when founder John Barbour began selling oilskins to the mariners and fishermen to protect them from the worst of the British weather. Today, Barbour is a 5th generation family-owned global lifestyle business providing outerwear, clothing, accessories and footwear for men, women and children and remains true to its founding values of quality, durability, attention to detail and fitness

for purpose.

Commenting on the collection, Specsavers Style Editor Bianca Swan said: “We’re so excited to welcome Barbour into our portfolio of designer brands.

Off the back of the popularity of quiet luxury trends in 2023, we’re now seeing a rise in the country core aesthetic. This is characterised by a focus on tradition and timeless quality, we feel there’s a clear synergy between both the Barbour and Specsavers brands.

With the launch of this collection, we hope to bring Barbour’s classic countryside style to the urban highstreet, so that every customer can find a style to suit them.”

David Godfrey, Regional Manager Distributor Markets, EMEA & Licensing, Barbour “We are delighted to partner with Specsavers on this eyewear collection which perfectly captures the heritage of Barbour. It incorporates our classic British style in textures and patterns synonymous with Barbour, reimagined for everyday wear from the city to the country.”

All adult frames in the Barbour range are priced at €159, meanwhile kids’ frames are priced at €89. The Barbour collection is now available in Specsavers Ópticas stores across Spain. You can find stores in Marbella and Fuengirola on the Costa del Sol, in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm,

Struggled to get clear skin? Sick of all the wrinkle creams that have big claims but don’t work? You can spend thousands of euros on a range of skin care products and lotions which give you no results. Or you can get a carbon laser treatment.

This laser treatment has been gaining popularity with red carpet celebrities worldwide. What exactly is it?

Also known as a carbon laser peel, carbon laser facial, or china doll facial, the carbon laser treatment peel is a revolutionary laser skin treatment that makes use of lasers to treat various skin conditions and imperfections. This treatment is painless, has no side e ects, no downtime, and immediate results.

The carbon laser treatment is a 2-step process. First, a layer of liquid activated carbon is applied to the entire face. This carbon will penetrate

deep into the pores of the skin and absorb oil, dirt, and dead skin cells.

Once the liquid carbon has dried and penetrated into the pores of the skin, a laser will be passed over the skin. This laser energy will heat and destroy the carbon particles on the surface of the skin and within the pores. The result of this is a deep skin resurfacing e ect and immediate skin smoothing.

Carbon laser peel treatment is safe for most skin types, contributing to its rise in popularity. Unlike typical chemical peels, where a chemical solution removes the top layers of skin, carbon laser treatment does not involve the use of any harsh chemicals. This means people who have sensitive skin can also try this laser treatment for various skin conditions after consulting a doctor or skin specialist.

What Bene ts Do You Get?

Acne Treatment And Pore Clearing

People who struggle with oily skin, enlarged pores and acne will nd carbon laser treatment very bene cial.

The laser energy generated by the carbon laser process will remodel and contract pores through the heating of the skin. This will in turn reduce excess oil production and reduces the appearance of dilated, enlarged pores.

About Barbour

Originally established by John Barbour in 1894 in South Shields in the North East of England to provide outerwear to fishermen, sailors and mariners to protect them from the worst of the British weather, today Barbour offers a complete wardrobe of clothes, accessories and footwear for men, women and children. Shirts, knitwear, trousers, footwear and accessories are now just as much in demand as Barbour’s iconic outerwear.

Forever synonymous with the British countryside, Barbour’s collections now span from the best practical country clothing to fashion-forward lifestyle collections. To this day Barbour’s ranges continue to be inspired by the company’s archives which date back to 1910 – each season classic designs are re-interpreted into modern, contemporary silhouettes. In 1998, in conjunction with Kinloch Anderson, renowned tartan specialists based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Barbour developed the first of their own exclusive tartans, the Classic Tartan based on the sett of the Ayrshire District Tartan from where the Barbour family

During the lasering process, the energy from the laser produces heat in the skin. This heat stimulates collagen production, which along with elastin and broblast, combine to rejuvenate the skin and smoothen ne lines and wrinkles.

Collagen is a protein that makes up 75% of our skin’s support structure. It’s also found within our bones, tendons and ligaments. As we age, our skin loses collagen, and the new collagen we naturally produce to replace it is of lower quality. The lasers used in carbon laser facials cause the production of new collagen that would otherwise not be possible.

A family-owned 5th generation brand established 130 years ago, Barbour is a global success story sold in over 55 countries worldwide including Germany, Italy, Spain, France, the US and Japan. In 2020, Barbour launched Wax for Life, an overarching name for all of Barbour’s wax services designed to encourage customers to extend the

life of their jackets. Wax for Life includes re-waxing and repairs first introduced in 1921 and Re-Loved, an upcycling circularity initiative.

In 2023, Barbour celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Beaufort wax jacket, an Evergreen icon, designed by Dame Margaret Barbour in 1983 and one of the classic jackets that has made Barbour a household name.

protein, which as the name suggests controls the elasticity of various tissue, including skin. Fibroblast is a cell that connects and supports other tissues and organs in the body. Fibroblast is the cell that produces the collagen protein mentioned above.

E ective Against Melasma (Dark Spots)

Carbon laser treatment are a helpful treatment for people su ering from melasma. Melasma is a skin condition that describes the overproduction of melanin, the substance in our skin that gives colour and pigment. Melasma a ects more women than men, and usually starts occurring at the age of 20 – 40. The face is a major area where this hyperpigmentation is found, which causes many people with the condition a signi cant impact on their quality of life.

Melasma is a chronic condition that requires multiple and ongoing treatments. This also applies with carbon laser treatment of the condition. The lasers work by breaking up melanin cells in the skin, and are most suited to people who have not had success with topical treatment.

Evens Skin Tone

Because of its ability to stimulate production of collagen, elastin, broblast and break up melanin cells, carbon laser treatment is also great for evening skin tone. After a treatment,

your skin will become brighter and more consistent in an instant! Acne scars, irregular textures and premature ageing from sun exposure will all show improvement.

Elche Hospital protestors to form human chain around the building

The civic platform formed in February to advocate for the return of Vinalopó Hospital in Elche to public management is ramping up its activism this May, following its participation in today’s May Day demonstrations in Elche and Crevillent. Advocates for 100% public healthcare are gearing up for further action, calling for a demonstration and human chain on Saturday, May 18th, to demand the Generalitat not extend the concession to the Ribera Salud group. They argue it’s legally dubious and unfairly leaves the healthcare in private hands, contrasting with the rest of the Valencian Community.

Gathering at Plaza de las Chimeneas in Elche at 10 a.m., the group plans to march en masse to Vinalopó Hospital to form a human chain around the building. While acknowledging the challenges, organizers urge citizens to join in demanding the reversal of healthcare management a ecting Elche, Crevillent, Aspe, Hondón de las Nieves, and Hondón de los Frailes.

During today’s demonstration, platform members distributed lea ets outlining their reasons for advocating 100% public healthcare. They highlight inequality, noting their region as the sole department yet to be reverted in the Valencian

Community. They point out worsened ratios, understa ng, particularly in primary care and key specialties, leading to prolonged wait times for specialist referrals. They condemn unethical incentives such as premature discharge and cite poor working conditions as driving professionals away and fueling high turnover.

Emphasizing healthcare as a fundamental right, they decry its commodi cation and call out lack of transparency in Ribera Salud’s operations, citing scandals like sta transfers during the pandemic and hospital unit closures for executive convenience.

Breast cancer screening should start at 40, expert panel says

Today, the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) issued updated guidance advising women to undergo mammograms every other year starting at age 40 and continuing until at least age 74. This recommendation diverges from previous guidance, which suggested initiating mammograms no later than age 50.

According to the newly published recommendation statement in JAMA, there has been a steady increase in breast cancer cases, with an average annual rise of 2% from 2015 to 2019. The task force altered its recommendations with the aim of facilitating earlier breast cancer diagnoses and ultimately saving more lives, as explained by Wanda Nicholson, MD, MPH, MBA, chair of the USPSTF. Dr. Nicholson highlighted the potential to prevent 1.3 deaths per every 1,000 women screened, particularly benefiting those in their forties.

Contrary to the USPSTF, organizations such as the American College of Radiology (ACR), the American Society of Breast Surgeons (ASBrS), and the Society of Breast Imaging (SBI) advocate for annual mammograms for women starting at age 40, according to Laura Dean, MD, a diagnostic radiologist at Cleveland Clinic. Some healthcare providers express concerns that the new USPSTF recommendations may not offer sufficient protection against breast cancer. Natasha Monga, MD, a breast radiologist at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center, asserts that while the task force

suggests screening every two years, annual mammography yields the greatest benefits. Commencing annual screening at age 40 aids in detecting smaller, more treatable cancers, potentially leading to less aggressive interventions.

However, despite these reservations, experts view the updated recommendations as a positive step forward. They note their potential to particularly benefit Black women, who often experience adverse outcomes following breast cancer diagnoses due to systemic and structural issues within the US healthcare system. The USPSTF recommendation statement acknowledges the presence of barriers, rooted in systemic racism, that hinder Black women from accessing quality healthcare.

“Black and other minority women are more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer at an earlier age,” Dr. Monga emphasizes. “These women are more prone to advanced-stage and aggressive forms of breast cancer and are at a higher risk of mortality from the disease.”

My two friends and I all have children the same age. When I had our youngest, it meant we were no longer on a par with their kids, as I was out of action for a couple of years. I find my other two friends are not asking me to join them, but are happy to ask me to baby sit while they go out for a girls night. I am hurt by this. I want to join them, not be their childminder. It’s getting to be quite a regular thing and they seem to think nothing of leaving me out. They just assume I will have the children because I love kids, and then sometimes they will phone and ask me to keep them until the following morning. My husband is getting really fed up and wants to tell them about it. One night one of the children got sick and we were up all night. When I told my friend about it, she said very little and hurried off. I have tried inviting them over for a girls night at my home, but they say they are busy.

Their treatment of you is out of order. If I were you, I would make myself less available for baby sitting in future, and see if your friends contact you for reasons of friendship only; if they don’t, this will tell you that all they were interested in, was using you to mind the children while they partied. If things come to a head as a result, I would call them out on their behaviour. If they don’t realise the error of their ways, then they were never worth having as friends in the first place.

New weight loss drug approved in Spain

Spanish health authorities have greenlit the release of Wegovy, a new weight-loss medication, in the country.

The Spanish Agency for Medicines and Health Products (Aemps) has given its approval for the sale of this anti-glycaemic drug, which is expected to be available at pharmacies nationwide soon.

Manufactured by Danish company Novo Nordisk, Wegovy aims to address supply shortages of GLP1 analogue drugs. These drugs are authorized to improve glycaemic control for adults with type 2 diabetes that cannot be adequately managed through diet and exercise alone. Wegovy is set to hit the market in May.

Until now, Saxenda was the only drug authorized for weight regulation, always in combination with a healthy diet and increased physical activity, as stated by the health ministry.

Wegovy, belonging to the GLP-1 analogue family, contains the active substance semaglutide, shared with Ozempic. Derived from a naturally occurring gut hormone,

Wegovy acts on brain receptors controlling appetite, leading to reduced food intake and aiding weight loss alongside a low-calorie diet and exercise.

Administered via subcutaneous injection, Wegovy is typically injected into the upper arm, upper legs, or stomach.

To obtain Wegovy in Spain, a prescription from a doctor is mandatory. Eligibility criteria include a body mass index (BMI) exceeding 30kg/m2 or above 27 kg/m² in cases of accompanying health issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, abnormal

blood lipid levels, sleeprelated respiratory disorders, or a history of cardiovascular events. In adolescents over 12 years old, it may be prescribed for obesity or weights exceeding 60 kilograms.

Pricing in Spain varies based on dosage but starts around 200 euros. The recommended maintenance dose is 2.4 mg, with initial doses starting at 0.25 mg and gradually increasing over 16 weeks to minimize adverse e ects. Common side e ects, a ecting up to one in ten users, include headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, stomach pain, weakness, or fatigue.

Warning: Brake Failure for Up to 25,000 BMW Vehicles

Produced Between 2022 and 2024

The consumers association OCU in Spain stated that it is the company’s responsibility to reach out to individuals and address the defect without charging them. However, they cautioned that owners of second-hand

cars might not be included in their database. Drivers of BMW vehicles manufactured between June 2022 and January 2024 have received a caution regarding a brake issue. The defect, agged by the European Union’s rapid

alert system for hazardous nonfood products (formerly RAPEX), concerns the hydraulic brake assist system, potentially leading to unforeseen failures.

as noted by Spain’s Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU).

A ected models may include the following:2 Series, 5 Series, 7 Series, i5, i7, iX1, X1, X5, X6, X7, XM, X5M, and X6M

This aw could necessitate increased pressure on the brake pedal, resulting in extended braking distances and potential malfunctions of the ABS and stability control systems, thereby heightening the risk of accidents,

Should all models produced during the speci ed period be a ected, up to 25,000 vehicles could be impacted.

The OCU asserts that BMW is responsible for contacting vehicle owners to rectify the issue at no cost. Nonetheless, it advises individuals with potentially a ected cars, especially those bought secondhand (and thus potentially not in the manufacturer’s database), to reach out to the company’s customer service for clari cation and resolution of the matter.

Ex-Spain coach Del Bosque to lead football federation commission

Former Spain national team coach Vicente del Bosque has been appointed to lead the Spanish government’s commission overseeing the country’s football federation (RFEF) in the wake of a corruption investigation targeting current and former federation presidents.

In response to the crisis facing the institution and in the interest of Spain, the Higher Sports Council established this commission as an extraordinary measure for the forthcoming months.

The inclusion of Del Bosque is seen as a move to bolster the image of Spanish football, particularly as Spain is set to co-host the 2030 men’s World Cup with Portugal and Morocco. With major tournaments like this summer’s men’s European Championship and the Paris Olympics on the horizon, the government expressed concerns about the reputational damage to the federation.

Pilar Alegría, the minister representing Spain’s top sports authority, praised Del Bosque, stating, “He represents the best of our country in football. He is our world champion, our European champion. He is a beloved gure.”

Del Bosque, aged 73, led Spain to victory in the 2010 World Cup and the 2012 European Championship during his tenure as coach.

Tournament to bring padel tennis to the streets of Crevillent

The inaugural “Open Crevillent Pádel” event was unveiled last Friday in Crevillent. Scheduled for the weekend of June 28 to 30, the tournament promises to transform iconic locales in the town, including the Plaza de la Constitución and the surroundings of the Chapí Theater, into dynamic paddle tennis arenas.

David Amorós, the Sports Mayor, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We’re bringing paddle tennis to the heart of our town, selecting venues like the Plaza de la Constitución and the Plaza del Teatro Chapí, among others.” He emphasized the inclusivity of the event, saying, “It’s open to all, aligning with our commitment to provide diverse sporting opportunities for every citizen. This tournament, with its innovative use of removable courts, promises to be a thrilling day for Crevillent, both in sports and celebration, with positive impacts on local commerce.”

Present at the unveiling were representatives from Red Thunder Sports, including Ricardo Ruiz and former international soccer player Juanfran Torres. Ruiz hailed the event

as a groundbreaking moment for Crevillent, remarking, “This is the first paddle tennis tournament of its kind here.” He elaborated, sharing how casual conversations evolved into this exciting reality.

Organized by Red Thunder Sports in collaboration with the local council, the tournament will feature both male and female categories spanning various skill levels. “What sets this

tournament apart is the addition of four removable courts alongside the three permanent ones outside the Félix Candela Pavilion,” revealed Ruiz. “We’re transforming the Félix Candela Pavilion into the centerpiece court, with additional courts set up in strategic locations such as Parc Nou’s green court, Plaza del Teatro Chapí, and Plaza de la Constitución.”

On 1st. May 27 members and guests ‘teed it up’ at Bonalba to compete in an Individual Stableford Competition. The weather on the day was a very ‘mixed bag’ to say the least ! Periods of driving rain, carried along on cold piercing winds, interspersed with interludes of warm Spring sun. All this made for di cult and testing playing conditions, which was re ected in the modest scores on the day. Although the course was generally in not

bad condition, considering the ongoing drought, the recent wet weather notwithstanding, some of the greens were rather patchy and many of the tee boxes were quite scru y. Following the game as usual, we returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern where we were served with Tapas and the day’s prizes were distributed.

On Tuesday the 30th of April we shed the penultimate round of the Abbey Spring cup at the El Bosquet complex. Our match manager Ian Brown had been struck down by the dreaded lurgy, Flu so it was left to the committee members present to Organise the match.

Neil McBernie and Richard Wood sorted out the anglers whilst Graham Patterson and Richard King organised the pegs.

It was decided that as conditions were wet and in the interest of safety pegs A1 to 7 and pegs 26 to 40 would be used and divided into four sections of four anglers.

It was thought that mainly

due to the recent heavy rains the shing was poor, especially on pegs 26 to 40. Winner on the day from peg 1 was Richard King. Richard shed the method feeder with maggots or corn and weighed 16.16kg. Bill Reade from the old yer peg 26 took second place with 14.88kgs using the bomb with maggots. Neil McBernie also got in on the act and showed his class from unfavoured peg 36 and weighed 12.40kg with some quality carp on maggot. The match was shed in pleasant conditions considering the recent downpours. Hopefully Ian will recover for next weeks match at Argos.

Richard Wood. Rods N Reels.

The following day 12 hardy souls turned up for more punishment at El Bosquet . The match was run by Bill Reade and I only have the results.

Winner on the day from the hot peg 1 was Barry Homer with 18.52kg.

Neil McBernie was second from peg 15 with 15.20kg and one of our Welsh Raiders Alan Davies took third place with 10.80kg from peg 3. I am now well on the way to recovery from Flu and will be shing next week barring a relapse.
