Progress made on Torrevieja’s N332 dual carriageway

The recent visit of the Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, resulted in the confirmation that the widening of the N332 as it

passes through Torrevieja will be approved this year.

In a consultation with the PP mayor of Torrevieja Eduardo Dolón, the Minister

announced that the splitting of the N-332 as it passes through the town will be approved this year. The works would be put out to tender in 2025. “There is no problem in sight” the minister declared. The impending project, slated to be tendered in 2025, will entail the division of the N-332 as it weaves through Torrevieja, a development hailed by Puente as a direct response to the persistent traffic gridlock plaguing the region. With an average daily influx of 40,000 vehicles, the N332 operates beyond capacity year-round, resulting in bottlenecks and impeding smooth traffic flow. This infrastructure overhaul addresses a longstanding grievance voiced by Torreviej’sburgeoning population, which has surged to over 80,000 residents.

During the Information Forum in Alicante the minister explained that work is currently being done on drafting the project and in parallel with the environmental impact declaration. Puente has said that it will soon be released to public information and the intention is for the project to be definitively approved this year and then put out to

tender early in 2025. The last news that was available was that the Ministry for the Ecological Transition had initiated procedures to obtain this environmental impact declaration. The area under study, however, does not include the entire part pending splitting, but only that between the link of N-332 with the CV-95 at the hospital and the link again of the national highway with the CV-905 at the height of the Punta Prima roundabout.

Thus, if this action is undertaken, the section between the shopping centre area and Alto de la Casilla would still need to have two

lanes in each direction. Both towards the north towards La Mata and Guardamar, and towards the South towards Orihuela Costa, this road has been expanded for many years.

At the meeting the Minister took questions from businessmen, Mayors and organisations across the region. Since 2015, the Business Confederation of the Valencian Community has been making a list of 320 infrastructures that are needed in the Valencian Community, of which 33 are priorities. The latter are under constant review.

Among the businessmen present was also the president of Hosbec, Fede Fuster , who asked the minister to express the Government’sposition on the possible arrival of the highspeed train to Benidorm and other coastal tourist towns such as Torrevieja. Óscar Puente has explained that the starting point for Transport is to connect the capitals first. Now we are focused on Almería, he explained and the need to resolve the paradigm of Extremadura.

In essence, Puente’s assurance of the imminent N332 expansion underscores a concerted endeavour to redress longstanding infrastructural deficiencies, underscoring the government’s responsiveness to provincial demands and its commitment to fostering sustainable development across Valencia’s urban landscape.

San Miguel farmers protest in Alicante

In a bold display of unity and determination, nearly 200 residents of San Miguel de Salinas voiced their opposition to the construction of a solar plant that threatens the livelihoods of numerous families and the landscape of their municipality. Gathering in Alicante’s Montanyeta Square, just outside the Headquarters of the Provincial Government, the demonstrators passionately urged authorities to reconsider the location of the proposed solar facility.

The planned installation, spanning nearly 200 hectares of land, has sparked concerns among the farming community, comprising over 70 families, who fear the irreversible impact it will have on their way of life. The solar plant, intended to support the Torrevieja Desalination Plant, has drawn sharp criticism from residents who believe it should be situated closer

to Torrevieja, potentially even offshore, to mitigate its adverse effects on local agriculture and tourism.

Representatives of the Neighbourhood Association‘San Miguel Arcángel’; emphasised the need for equitable distribution of the project’;s burden, asserting that no single municipality should bear the brunt of its consequences.

María Conchita Marín and Jesús Pérez, both farmers whose lands are targeted for the plant, lamented the potential devastation it would bring to their town and its people. While supportive of renewable energy initiatives, they vehemently opposed any development that jeopardized their community’s wellbeing.

The demonstration succeeded in galvanizing widespread support across San Miguel de Salinas, transcending political divides and garnering unanimous

backing from all parties. Mayor Juan de Dios Fresneda expressed gratitude for the solidarity displayed by residents and political groups alike, affirming their collective resolve to challenge the project.

In the wake of the protest, San Miguel authorities and residents remain steadfast in their determination to protect their interests. Vowing to persist until their voices are heard and their rights respected, they stand united in defense of their way of life against perceived threats posed by unchecked development.

As the standoff between local residents and authorities persists, the fate of the proposed solar plant hangs in the balance, underscoring the complex interplay between environmental conservation, economic interests, and community welfare.

Transport Minister claims Alicante Airport does not need a second runway

Spain’s Transport Minister, Oscar Puente, has dismissed calls for a second runway at Alicante-Elche airport, asserting that a new terminal can effectively manage the escalating passenger influx. Puente emphasized that the addition of a second terminal would enable the airport to accommodate up to 26 million passengers annually, a significant increase from the current 16 million.

Addressing concerns about the airport’s capacity, Puente remarked, Alicante’s infrastructure has untapped potential, not solely due to its single runway, but due to

other avenues for growth. He noted that while airlines have not expressed a need for a second runway, should demand necessitate it, the necessary infrastructure would be constructed.

However, local politicians and business groups have vigorously campaigned for the construction of a second runway, citing its necessity to sustain aviation operations.

The Alicante Chamber of Commerce recently released an economic impact study, outlining the potential ramifications of not expanding the airport’s runway capacity.

Carlos Baño, President of the Chamber, warned of adverse consequences, including airlines diverting services away from Alicante due to congestion. He estimated that failure to build a second runway could result in the loss of nearly 15,000 jobs or opportunities for employment over the next six years.

Supporting the call for expansion, Valencian President Carlos Mazon emphasized the compelling need for additional runway capacity. Meanwhile, airport operator Aena announced plans to launch a tender for Alicante-Elche airport’s

expansion later this year, with a budget of €600 million. Puente assured that the expansion project would prioritise enhancing terminal facilities, introducing new routes, and augmenting overall capacity to accommodate growing operations.

Drawing a parallel, he highlighted LondonGatwick airport’s success in handling 35 million passengers annually with a single runway, underscoring the potential for efficient management of increased traffic at Alicante-Elche airport.

Banking scam claims 1 million euros

A sophisticated banking scam spanning across multiple countries has been unearthed, with authorities arresting 30 individuals accused of defrauding victims of over one million euros. Operating under the guise of legitimate business transactions, the criminal network orchestrated a scheme known as the “Man in the Middle” scam, manipulating conversations between company suppliers and their clients to siphon money from pending payments.

The Guardia Civil, spearheading Operation “Osgiliath,” carried out arrests in various towns across Andalusia, Catalonia, Madrid, Murcia, and Toledo. Among those apprehended are two alleged ringleaders, captured in Getafe and Barcelona. Additionally, 40 suspected perpetrators have been identified, spanning Spain, Croatia, Hungary, England, Morocco, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Romania, with their identities reported to relevant authorities.

Victims of this elaborate scheme come from Spain, Germany, Andorra, Belgium, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Slovenia, Finland, the Netherlands, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Portugal,

the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic, and Romania, totalling over 100 individuals who fell prey to the organization’s fraudulent activities within just one year.

The investigation, triggered by a report from a defrauded construction company last May, uncovered the intricate workings of the “Man in the Middle” scam. Perpetrators intercepted conversations between suppliers and clients, assuming false identities to redirect funds or negotiate payment extensions, ultimately leading victims to transfer money to the criminals’ accounts.

Moreover, the criminal network extended its fraudulent activities beyond banking scams, posing as legitimate companies to advertise motor vehicles, agricultural machinery, and vacation rental properties on fake websites. These sites, often bearing the names of reputable brands, lured unsuspecting buyers with competitive prices, facilitating further financial exploitation.

To facilitate their illicit gains, the organization enlisted a network of “mules,” individuals who received commissions for transferring money. Funds acquired through scams were

then withdrawn from ATMs, invested in virtual currencies, or transferred to accounts in Malta and Lithuania.

The operation unfolded in two phases, with the first arrests made in December 2023 and the second phase concluding on March 12. In total, 30 individuals, comprising 19 men and 11 women aged between 19 and 56, have been apprehended, facing charges ranging from technological fraud to money laundering.

Furthermore, 40 individuals, including 29 men and 11 women aged between 20 and 45, have been identified as suspected perpetrators, with their cases referred to the Investigating Court number 4 of Alicante.

Through collaborative efforts involving the Guardia Civil’s Main Post in San Juan de Alicante, the Alicante Cybercrime Prosecutor’s Office, EUROPOL, and police forces from 22 countries, authorities seized 153 bank accounts and recovered 114,366 euros linked to the group’s illicit activities. As investigations continue, authorities remain vigilant in dismantling criminal networks and safeguarding individuals from falling victim to sophisticated financial scams.

Masurel, a SpanishFrench national, had just concluded his participation in the festival when the fatal accident occurred. According to organisers, the collision was the result of a strike with a vulture, an unforeseen and tragic event that ended the 42-year-old pilot’s life abruptly.

Renowned for his talent and commitment to the sport, Masurel had soared to great heights in his career. Crowned the Spanish Unlimited Aerobatic Flight Champion in July 2023, he represented Spain at the 31st FAI World Aerobatic Championships in Poland in August 2022, showcasing his exceptional skill on the international

Truck driver arrested at Orihuela check point

Officers from the Traffic Subsector of the Alicante Civil Guard have arrested a 36-year-old man for two crimes. The first of these, against road safety by carrying out a breathalyzer test in an area belonging to the municipality of Orihuela and verifying that it was six times the permitted alcohol level; the second of these crimes for serious disobedience by breaking the order to immobilize the truck.

On May 9 at around 9:45 a.m., agents from the Traffic Subsector of the Civil Guard of Alicante, while carrying out a transport control on the AP-7 highway, in an area belonging to the municipality of Orihuela, They saw a truck with a semi-trailer that they stopped. When the agents prepared to inspect the vehicle, they detected certain symptoms in the driver that made them suspicious, so they proceeded to perform a breathalyzer test.

Once the test was carried out, the agents verified that the driver had six times the permitted alcohol level, which is why he was investigated for a crime against road safety for driving under the influence of alcoholic beverages. Furthermore, due to these same events, the agents immobilized the vehicle at

Spanish government rejects BBVA’s offer to Banco Sabadell Shareholders

In a move that has reignited discussions on banking consolidation within Europe, the Spanish government has rejected an offer by Banco Bilbao Vizcaya Argentaria, S.A. (BBVA) to Banco Sabadell SA shareholders.

BBVA announced in a press statement that its board of directors had presented an offer to Banco Sabadell shareholders, touting it as an “exceptionally favourable proposal.” However, the Spanish government promptly rebuffed the offer.

According to BBVA’s statement, the proposed deal offered one BBVA share for every 4.83 shares of Sabadell, representing a substantial premium of 30% over the closing prices of both banks on 29th April and a 50% premium over the weighted average prices of the past three months. BBVA emphasized the positive financial impacts of the transaction, citing significant synergies and the complementary nature of both banks.

Furthermore, BBVA pledged to maintain its current shareholder distribution policy and its commitment to distributing any excess capital above 12%.

However, sources from the Ministry of Finance, as reported by Europa Press, voiced concerns about the proposal, citing potential risks to financial stability due to excessive concentration.

Similar sentiments were echoed by the governor of the Bank of Spain.

If the proposed merger between BBVA and Banco Sabadell were to proceed, it could reshape the eurozone banking sector significantly. Analysts speculate that the merger could elevate BBVA’s assets to over $1 trillion, potentially making it the third-largest eurozone bank by market value.

Piero Cingari, a contributor to Euonews, highlighted the transformative potential of the merger, stating, “The potential merger between BBVA and Banco Sabadell would catapult the former into the exclusive club of eurozone banks with more than $1 trillion (€940bn) in total assets.”

the scene.

At 12:40 p.m. they verified that the immobilized vehicle had continued the trip without communicating it or having been authorized to do so. Due to this, the agents began their search, being located and intercepted on the A-7 highway, near Elche, verifying that it was the same driver, proceeding to arrest him for two crimes against road safety and another of serious disobedience. for the violation of the immobilization order, being brought to judicial disposal.

During the month of April 2024, by the Traffic Sector of the Civil Guard in the Valencian Community, a total of 212 drivers were brought to justice as alleged

perpetrators of crimes against road safety: 80 for driving without a permit. or license (of which 40 are for total loss of points, 12 for being provisionally deprived by judicial decision, 1 for being definitively deprived by judicial decision and 27 for never having obtained the permit or license), 113 for doing so under the effects of alcoholic beverages, 2 for speeding, 10 for reckless driving, 1 for leaving the scene of the accident and 6 for driving with drugs in the system.

In the province of Alicante, action was taken against 34 drivers for lacking a permit or license, 43 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 2 for reckless driving and 1 for speeding.

Former President of Spanish Football Federation to stand trial

Cingari also pointed out the potential financial gains for BBVA, with projections indicating a substantial increase in revenues and net profit, along with significant boosts in loans and risk-weighted assets.

Favourable

Chris Hallam, an equity analyst at Goldman Sachs, viewed the proposed merger favourably, citing solid industrial logic and the potential for revenue and cost synergies due to business overlap in Spain.

However, Hallam acknowledged the challenges posed by cross-border mergers within the eurozone, citing stringent regulatory frameworks and the complexities of bank integration. He noted a prevailing trend favouring in-market consolidations over large-scale mergers.

Against this backdrop, Cingari highlighted a broader trend of significant market outperformance by eurozone smaller banks compared to larger ones since the beginning of the year.

Shares of Banco Sabadell have surged by nearly 60% in the first four months of the year, underscoring investor optimism surrounding potential consolidation moves within the banking sector.

A Spanish judge has confirmed that Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), will stand trial on charges of sexual assault and coercion. The charges stem from an incident where Rubiales allegedly kissed player Jenni Hermoso without her consent following last year’s Women’s World Cup final.

Judge Francisco de Jorge, who previously ruled the kiss as “unconsented and carried out unilaterally and in a surprising fashion,” has now affirmed the charges, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

Prosecutors are seeking a twoand-a-half-year prison sentence for Rubiales, accusing him of both sexual assault and attempting to coerce Hermoso into publicly supporting him amidst public backlash following the World Cup final in Sydney.

Additionally, the judge has ruled

that former Spain coach Jorge Vilda, the sports director of Spain’s men’s team, Albert Luque, and the federation’s former head of marketing, Rubén Rivera, will also face trial for their alleged involvement in pressuring Hermoso.

In January, the judge found sufficient evidence to suggest that Rubiales had unsuccessfully pressured Hermoso to appear in a video he produced and published as public outcry mounted against him.

A trial date for the case has yet to be set.

FIFA has already taken action against Rubiales, imposing a threeyear ban on him until after the men’s 2026 World Cup. However, this ban will expire before the next women’s tournament in 2027. Additionally, Spain’s sports authority has deemed him unfit to hold a position in sports management for three years.

Five people arrested for counterfeit items in Torrevieja

The Civil Guard, in the so-called Jarapero operation, carried out between Torrevieja and Elche, has arrested 5 people for dedicating themselves to the import and distribution of counterfeit products.

Almost 124,000 counterfeit items have been seized that would have ended up distributed through manteros. The detainees, together with the seized merchandise, have been placed at the disposal of the Elche Guard Court for their alleged participation in a crime against industrial property. All of them have been released with the imposition of precautionary measures.

The investigations originated in the month of March following several complaints from merchants in Torrevieja about the proliferation

of illegal products offered in the top manta on the promenade and in beach areas of the Torrevieja municipality . The Torrevieja Main Post, with the objective of identifying and arresting the ringleaders who distributed this illicit merchandise, began operation Jarapero.

After intense surveillance, the agents identified an individual of Moroccan origin, resident in the municipality, who acted as an intermediary between the sellers and suppliers of these products.

The investigations led to several industrial warehouses in an industrial estate in Elche, where warehouses of counterfeit products from internationally recognized brands were discovered.

Two children injured in Torrevieja scooter accident

Two children were injured in Torrevieja after suffering a scooter accident.

The medical team assisted the minors, one of them with head trauma and the other with a possible fracture of the clavicle.

Two children, aged 13 and 15, were injured last week, after suffering a scooter accident on which they were traveling in Torrevieja. At 7:10 p.m. the Emergency Information and Coordination Center (CICU) was alerted of this accident on Paris

Avenue in the salt city.

The CICU mobilized a SAMU unit and an SVB unit to the scene to treat the two injured occupants of the scooter.

The youngest of them, who had multiple trauma due to head trauma, was stabilized by the SAMU medical team after performing advanced life support maneuvers. The oldest was treated for a possible broken collarbone. Both minors were transferred to the Torrevieja hospital.

Illegal nursing home discovered in the Vega Baja

The Civil Guard has uncovered an illegal nursing home operating from a private chalet in the Vega Baja del Segura region of Alicante province. The facility, managed by a 70-yearold Swiss woman, housed nearly a dozen elderly German nationals. She allegedly hired untrained workers illegally and controlled the residents’ bank accounts, defrauding some of them of 9,500 euros.

Dubbed operation ‘Geranio 24’, the Civil Guard, along with inspectors from the Department of Social Services, Equality, and Housing of the Generalitat Valenciana, conducted a search of the premises, discovering

nine elderly German residents and several undocumented workers serving as caregivers. Documents were seized for analysis, and a judicial block on bank accounts was

requested. Investigative Court No. 1 of Orihuela is leading the investigation, while Social Services inspectors have recommended disciplinary action and the closure of the facility.

Man arrested following drug plantation discovery

Officers of the National Police have arrested an individual allegedly linked to some marijuana plantations located inside a house located on the La Torreta del Escorratel road. The police operation, which was carried out for several weeks, was carried out in coordination with the Orihuela Local Police, leading to the arrest of the alleged perpetrator, 30 years old and of Spanish nationality, who had a history of acts of a different nature. The actions were brought to the attention of the Dean of the Investigative Courts of Orihuela.

The events occurred during an ordinary service of the Orihuela Local Police. The agents were traveling along a regional road in the direction of Orihuela, near the town of Benferri. While patrolling, they were able to see two dogs in deplorable conditions, verifying that the animals, an American Stanford breed and classified as potentially dangerous, were tied, in an unhealthy environment and without access to water or food.

Local Police officers approached the area, also finding two houses in a state of abandonment. At that moment they were surprised by two people

who hurriedly left the place in a vehicle. It was then when, as they approached one of the buildings from which these men had left, they smelled a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside.

Finding the house open, they carried out an inspection and discovered that there were a large number of marijuana plants of considerable height, with growing equipment in operation, the interior light plugged in and an air conditioning unit. Once the illegal act against public health was known, in this case an indoor marijuana plantation, they brought the facts to the attention of the National Police.

Next, the Local Police officers carried out the

corresponding actions to care for the two animals in a situation of abuse. They were finally able to be transferred to the Animal Protection Center, after experiencing a tense moment when one of the dogs attacked an agent and, later, a volunteer at the center.

The Judicial Police group of the National Police that carried out the investigation managed to identify one of the alleged perpetrators, and he was located shortly afterwards. After the arrest, the substances found in the house were intervened, proceeding to dismantle the facilities, removing from the illicit trade all the material used for the plantation along with a total of 67 marijuana plants.

The Bank of England held rates steady as expected yesterday afternoon. Interest rates have remained at the 16-year high of 5.25% for the last six meetings as the central bank’s monetary policymakers wait for the threat of high inflation to diminish.

While the rates remained unchanged, the focus was on the Bank of England’s accompanying commentary, which markets hoped would provide a glimpse into the central bank’s potential actions in the coming months.

Governor Andrew Bailey’s comments were described as more optimistic, hinting at a possible rate cut in June. He stated that a cut at the next meeting was neither “ruled out” nor “fait accompli”, and it was “likely that we will need to cut bank rates over the coming quarter, possibly more than currently priced into market rates.”

Another notable deviation from previous meetings was the voting split. Seven members of the Monetary Policy Committee voted in favour of holding rates, with two voting for an immediate rate cut, a change from the eight to one split in the last meeting. Markets are now divided on what to expect from June’s MPC meeting, with the probability of a cut currently standing at 58.9%.

The outlook for interest rates has changed significantly since the beginning of the year. Currently, only two rate cuts are priced in for 2024, which would see interest rates fall by 0.5%. This forecast is a stark reduction from January, where the market initially expected six cuts in 2024, which would have meant a 1.5% drop across the year.

If the Bank of England does cut rates in June, it would see the BoE take a similar path to the European Central Bank, which is expected to make its first cut two weeks earlier. However, most economists still seem to expect the BoE to wait until August or September before reaching

GBP / EUR UPDATE

a committee vote that favours a rate cut, slightly ahead of the Fed, which isn’t expected to make its first cut until November.

The Bank of England’s rate meeting was closely followed by the latest UK GDP growth data, which was released this morning at 7am. The ONS data estimated economic growth of 0.6% JanuaryMarch. The estimates also reflect 0.2% growth compared to the same quarter one year ago. This indicates that the UK has come out the technical recession it entered into at the end of 2023.

EUR Last week, growth forecasts from the Eurozone’s four major economies beat their forecasts and contributed to the Eurozone posting growth of 0.3% between January and March. Annual CPI figures were also released for Germany and Spain and came in under forecasts 2.2% and 3.3%, respectively, while the Eurozone CPI Flash estimate came in as expected at 2.4%.

With a French bank holiday on Wednesday and Thursday and a German bank holiday on Thursday, it was another quieter week of Eurozone data releases.

The only data out of note set for release this week was HCOB German services and composite PMIs, which were published on Monday. The data came in largely close to expectations, with services and composite readings posting 53.2 against the expected figure of 53.3 and 50.6 against 50.5, respectively.

The HCOB Eurozone services and composite PMIs came in above forecasts at 53.3 and 51.7, respectively. Other data releases this week include German Factory orders, which came out this morning at -0.4 % against forecasts of +0.4%, and finally, German Industrial production, which was released on Wednesday coming in slightly above forecast at -0.4%.

Ministry of Health guarantees comprehensive care for all departments

The Minister of Health, Marciano Gómez, pointed out during his visit to Vega Baja, the importance of the “measures that the Ministry of Health is implementing to guarantee comprehensive and equitable care, especially in those departments that have been considered of difficult coverage as is the case of Orihuela and Torrevieja.”

In this sense, the councilor recalled that both departments have been considered difficult to cover “in order to try to encourage, as far as possible, the coverage of places taking into account the idiosyncrasies of each of them.”

Marciano Gómez, Minister of Health

In terms of infrastructure, the Ministry of Health is carrying out the expansion works of the Vega Baja Hospital, which began with the previous Consell, and which has a budget of more than 62 million euros, which will allow increase the surface area by 40%, going from 36,300 square meters to 50,000 square meters.

On the other hand, for this year 2024 the Ministry of Health contemplates a budget

item of more than eight million euros for the improvement and equipment of the health infrastructure of the Orihuela health department.

Regarding the health department of Torrevieja, the Generalitat is going to allocate 4 million euros to improve infrastructure, equipment and technology. Likewise, the departments of

Orihuela and Torrevieja are integrated into the AlicanteSur Interdepartmental Health Group, along with those of Elche-General Hospital and Elche-Crevillent. In this way, the objective is to search for synergies between departments, to offer better healthcare and continuity of care to patients.

Water platform calls for meeting with the Minister

The Vega Baja del Segura Transparent Safe Platform has requested a working meeting with the Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge, Teresa Ribera, to present proposals to improve the quality and quantity of water received by the traditional orchard of Vega Baja, proposals to alleviate the effects of possible torrential rains, as well as continue working to guarantee food sovereignty.

From Segura Transparente they point out that given the lack of response from the competent public administrations, both in planning and in works after the serious flood suffered in the Vega Baja region in September 2019, they have considered it necessary to request a meeting with the minister. This request is signed together with the Carrizales Irrigation Community, the Alfeitamí de Almoradí Private Water Court, the Rojales Private Water Court and the San Felipe Neri Irrigators Community.

Of the proposals they propose, to improve water quality, they ask to guarantee the water in the basin that corresponds to urban consumption and for the traditional agriculture of the

Vega Baja orchard, as well as that all discharges to the river bed must be treated by advanced tertiary system purification. Likewise, they ask for control and treatment of the return contributions that are highly contaminated with salts.

They will also bring to the meeting proposals to alleviate the effects of flooding with the lamination of all the boulevards that flow into the river or the Vega such as those of Tabala, Garruchal, Chícamo, Abanilla, Crevillente, Albatera, among others, in order to slow down the avalanches of rainwater and study the possibility of using it later.”

They also ask for “the expansion of the evacuation capacity of the Segura River, widening it as necessary so that it can evacuate to the sea all the flows received from the Region of Murcia with bypasses or splitting of the channel at the points where it cannot be widened and build a fourth eye on the river bridge in Rojales.”

They also propose “modifying or eliminating the separation of the old and new river channel, at least from the exit of the AgreementMayayo to the sea, cleaning the sediments and carrying out periodic maintenance of the channel.” In addition to being

“an adequate intervention at the mouth of the river that allows the maximum evacuation of water to the sea, changing the breakwaters at the mouth of the Segura River, prolonging the north arm and drastically shortening the south arm, to facilitate the river exit and prevent the entry of the ebb of the sea from the Levant.”

From the platform they consider it necessary to “study how to collect the flows contributed by the boulevards of the Albatera and Crevillente mountain ranges and provide alternatives for evacuation to the sea. Remodel and expand the channel network of Vega Baja, Reina, Mayayo, Abanilla or Covenant, resizing the channels so that they effectively evacuate the flows received to the mouth of the Segura River and provide a satisfactory solution to the obstacles posed by the road. National 332 and the network of highways that have been built and do not facilitate the evacuation of rainwater.”

Regarding food sovereignty, Segura Transparente proposes appropriate actions to organize the territory and protect the fertile lands of the region and promote the consumption of local products.

Opposition calls on Mayor to officially reject Torremendo waste plant

The socialist spokesperson in Orihuela, Carolina Gracia, appeared last week to assess the response of the mayor of the municipality, Pepe Vegara, to the proposal to install a regional waste treatment plant at the proposal of the concessionaire company in the district. from Torremendo.

The PSOE urges the mayor to present, at the next plenary session, an institutional declaration since “it is the only way to give veracity to the Local Government

proposal. Just as the council must urge the Mazón government to conclude the file for the protection of Sierra Escalona.”

In this sense, Gracia has insisted on the opacity that surrounds this matter of which the Provincial Council, through the Consortium itself, “has not transferred the file to the council, nor to the opposition.” A project that must include a series of specifications that the Orihuela City Council, the Torremendo Neighborhood Association and the

opposition are unaware of, such as “the level of waste treatment, the exposure and pollution that they can generate,” said the socialist spokesperson.

Finally, the spokesperson for the socialists has assured that “if this infrastructure is to be built in Orihuela, it will have to be in a place that corresponds and can benefit the rest of the region and, of course, that it is not in a place that harms to natural places like Sierra Escalona.”

Benejuzar issues tender for park and sports centre cafeteria

The Benejúzar City Council has announced the start of the bidding process for two projects aimed at improving infrastructure in the municipality for a total amount of 226,726.76 euros. The first project will consist of the conditioning and improvement of the Virgen del Pilar park, while the second project will deal with the expansion of the canteen facilities of the Benejuense sports center.

The Councilor for Infrastructure, José Antonio Martínez, has indicated that the improvement of the Virgen del Pilar park will involve the renovation of the playground, with the installation of a castletype structure and new children’s games. Likewise, “pavement replacement will be carried out, reinforcing the lower layers with concrete and changing the current dirt surface for protective rubber flooring, which will

expand the playing surface and protect the little ones in case of bumps and falls.” ”, explained Martínez.

These works, valued at 128,349 euros, include the renovation of other elements of the park such as the bins, benches and streetlights, “which are also in a very poor state, which will lead us to have greater lighting and cleaning in this area of the town, and creating a more pleasant environment,” said the mayor.

In the same way, the second project to be put out to tender aims to expand the facilities of the Benejúzar sports center canteen, “in order to offer a better service for both the students of the municipal sports schools, as well as their families and people who come to practice sports at the venue during the weekends,” Martínez indicated.

With an estimated budget of 98,376 euros, the residents of Benejuca will go from

obsolete and insufficient facilities to having a rectangular structure of approximately 39 square meters, equipped with two separate spaces for the bars and the kitchen, with a griddle and oven, and to which They will add a small warehouse and toilet for staff use.

For his part, the mayor of Benejúzar and head of the Treasury, Vicente Cases, has indicated that both projects will have an execution period of three months “and will be developed under the + Cerca 2023 aid plan of the Provincial Council of Alicante, destined to assistance to municipalities and infrastructure subsidy.” Thus, Cases thanked “the collaboration and the extended hand that we always find in the provincial institution that, through this aid, allows us to improve the services, constructions and benefits that our neighbors need and deserve.”

House plus Homes expands services

Any business that has been successful for 22-years and is still going strong has to be exceptional, and House plus Homes is a prime example. The kitchen and bathroom specialist has a reputation for quality and professionalism that is second to none and has guaranteed its place head-and-shoulders above the competition year-after-year.

Owner Graham is a time-served tradesman with more than 35 years’ experience in fitting and installation both in the UK and here on the Costa Blanca. Each of his team members are professional and fully qualified in their trade. This expertise provides peace of mind and

excellent results every time.

Based out of its showroom in Quesada, House plus Homes offers a range of service and products centred on kitchens and bathrooms. This includes everything from a makeover of worktops, doors or vanity units to a fully designed, bespoke installation. There are more than 100 finishes to choose from including the ever-popular high gloss white, quality doors. House plus Homes can complete any building work that is required to make your kitchen and bathroom the one of your dreams. This includes plastering, tiling, building or taking out walls, electrics and plumbing

works.

Graham said: “We work to people’s budgets and help them achieve the design and affect they and looking for. We have great deals and discounts available in store. We are currently offering 15 kitchen doors for just 1,495 euros from our Syncron Range with 20 door designs to choose from – including hi-gloss white. We encourage people to call in for a chat, always offer a free no obligation quotation and all of our work is guaranteed. Our kitchen and bathroom before and after pictures speak for themselves.”

Sometimes just revamping cupboard doors and worktops can transform a tired and dull room into a chic and modern space. However, if it’s a beautiful bespoke design, fully fitted new installation you’re looking for House plus Homes is also the place to head. Over the last 22 years the team has worked on all types of briefs at all budgets and has a following of very happy customers.

Over the years, the business has received many thank you cards and testimonials. One testimonial on House plus Homes Facebook page from Ger Hickey reads: “Great job Graham. Kitchen looks great.

Although we couldn’t be there ourselves, we were able to leave it in your hands and you provided us with a reliable and hasslefree service. Looking forward to getting over to Spain as soon as possible.”

Sue Scott-Holden said: “Just want to say thank you to Graham and his team for the wonderful job done on my new kitchen. It has exceeded expectations. We are very happy with the finish. Highly recommend this company.”

Due to customer demand, House plus Homes is now offering even more services including patios, garden walls and glass balustrades. Based on years of

experience the business now also provides a professional leak detection service. This comprises leak location and full repair. Continuing with the House plus Homes ethos, all services are competitively priced.

would walk 500 miles Gordon’s MND Camino Frances”

A strange title because my name’s Tony. But this is not about me it’s about raising awareness of and funds for MND (Motor Neurone Disease) and Gordon is my focus.

Gordon was diagnosed with MND last October 2023. He is a very dear and close friend of mine. We met in El Eden where he has a holiday home and I am a resident. We have a mutual shared interest of walking, cycling and a great love of karaoke, the first song I heard him sing was 500 miles by the Proclaimers, hence the title.

Motor Neuron Disease is a progressively, debilitating, life shortening and changing disease with no cure.

My aim is to complete this walk, “The Camino Frances”. I will start at St. Jean Pied de Port in France, over the Pyrenees into Spain, on to Santiago de Compostela and then ultimately

onto Cape Finisterre, the old Roman End of the World, in total just over 500 miles.

The walk is self funding and will take between 33 and 40 days. I have, with the help of Motor Neurone Disease Scotland, opened up a Just Giving page, entitled ‘Gordon’s MND Camino Frances. Any donations will go direct to MND Scotland.

I, along with another friend Dave Scott will be starting out on the 13th of May from Guardarmar and on to Alicante to catch the over night coach to Pamploma. We will arrive there at 05.30am on 14th May and get either a taxi or bus to SJDP where we will register at the Camino Pilgrims office and collect our Pilgrims passport.

We will overnight in SJDP and finally start our walk over the Pyrenees on the 15th May.

Please donate any amount

large or small, through the just giving page, as it will make a difference. Thank you for reading this and Buen Camino Kind Regards, Tony

Two rival clans monitored in Elche after a brawl leaves two injured

During the past week, the Los Palmerales neighborhood in Elche saw nightly cordons set up by both Local and National Police to prevent further clashes between two rival family clans. These residents, who have been under constant surveillance, engaged in a confrontation last month, the details of which remain unclear.

Initially, the Local Police, aware of the escalating tensions, responded to the skirmish, only to call for backup upon realizing it had escalated into a mass

brawl involving primarily sticks and at least one knife, with reports suggesting gunshots were fired.

Three individuals were apprehended that night for their alleged roles, while two others sought treatment at the General Hospital of Elche, one sustaining serious knife wounds to the leg. The assailant’s deliberate choice of limb to wound indicates an awareness of the legal repercussions; targeting a vital organ would have elevated the charges to attempted homicide. Subsequent

investigations led to the arrest of at least 14 individuals involved in the brawl, primarily from the feuding clans, aided by video evidence provided by witnesses. The police executed careful operations to secure warrants and confiscate weapons used in the altercation.

With a total of 16 individuals implicated, including the two injured parties, the investigation concluded, though the gravity of the situation was somewhat downplayed, a common occurrence in such incidents.

record for blue flags on its beaches

This summer, a recordbreaking 638 Spanish beaches will proudly fly the blue flag, marking an increase of 11 from the previous year. These flags will adorn shores across 247 municipalities, slightly fewer than last year. Alongside these coastal distinctions, 102 marinas and seven tourist boats will also be recognized with the prestigious blue flag, totaling 747 flags overall, an increase of 18.

The blue flag serves as an internationally recognized symbol of quality, awarded to beaches and marinas that meet stringent standards in environmental management, accessibility, safety, and legal compliance. In Spain, the Environmental and Consumer Education Association (Adeac) is responsible for bestowing these honors. Spain maintains its global leadership in blue flag rankings since 1994, surpassing countries like Greece and Turkey. It claims 15% of blue flag beaches worldwide and ranks third in marinas, trailing only the Netherlands and France.

Leading the charge in Spain’s blue flag count is the Valencian Community with 159 flags, followed closely by Andalusia with 156, Galicia with 125, and Catalonia with 118.

Other regions boasting blue flag distinctions include the Canary Islands, Balearic Islands, Murcia, Asturias, Cantabria, Extremadura, Basque Country, Melilla, Ceuta, and Madrid.

Notably, seven municipalities have maintained blue flag status uninterrupted since the program’s inception in 1987.

Moreover, 88 interpretation centers across various regions have been recognized as Blue Centers in 2024, highlighting Spain’s commitment to environmental education and sustainability.

Katie Price has been slammed by neighbours for her ‘constant drama’ at her £2m ‘mucky mansion’ which is being seized by the courts within a matter of weeks after she was declared bankrupt for a second time.

Locals living in Dial Post, West Sussex near her £2m property also say the country home is becoming an ‘eyesore’.

Other residents in the picture postcard village say they are ‘sick to death’ of the ‘dramas’ that occur at her £2m mansion with loud music, dogs barking and vans blocking public roads.

It also can be revealed that Horsham District Council has closed a five-year enforcement investigation into some of Price’s renovations at her £2m mansion. But one local has called on council chiefs to look again.

Price bought the sprawling £2million West Sussex house in 2014, and it boasts some 12.25 acres of land, a swimming pool, tennis courts, stables and paddocks.

From the outside, the property appears

to be in a state of disrepair with photos of the 10-acre estate showing the garden overgrown with weeds.

Meanwhile, the swimming pool appears to be covered in moss and grime whilst various bits of litter and waste can be seen strewn across the floor.

One resident told MailOnline: ‘We’re sick to death of the constant drama. She doesn’t come into the village anymore because she knows we don’t like the way she lives. I wish she’d move.’

A pensioner, who was walking his dog on the village green, added: ‘She simply doesn’t live by any code of conduct or restraint. She is reckless in just about everything she does.

‘My wife and I worry when we drive past the entrance to her house because you never know if she’ll come tearing out onto the road in one of her pink cars.

‘Most of the time she’s banned from driving but it worries us because of that incident when she flipped her car.

SKINCARE

The Ultimate Guide on How to Build a Skincare Routine for Healthy Skin

Knowing your skin type is essential to make the most of a skin care routine. Not all skin types are the same, and using the wrong products and ingredients can wreak havoc on the skin.

You can perform a simple barefaced test to determine whether your skin is normal, oily, dry, combination, or sensitive. First, wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry. Then, after 30 minutes, visually assess the skin or blot it with a blotting paper and see how it appears.

Normal skin won’t display any oiliness, dryness or red patches.

Dry skin will likely feel tight or dry and may even have dry, flaky skin areas. It may also look like it is dehydrated and thirsty.

Oily skin appears shiny and slick with an oil residue on the skin, particularly the T-zone.

Combination skin is a little bit dry and a little bit oily.

Sensitive skin is red, itchy, inflamed, and temperamental.

Once you’ve determined your skin type, it’s time to pinpoint your skin’s most pressing concerns. For example, aging skin likely needs a bump in collagen and hydration, whereas acneic skin requires more mattifying ingredients and those that break up oil while clearing up pimples. On the other hand, skin that’s affected by hyperpigmentation benefits

from brightening ingredients and exfoliators to lighten the discoloration. By recognizing your skin’s concerns, you can dial in the products and ingredients to build a skincare routine that best addresses the issues.

Cleanse: The First Step

The first step in any skin care routine should always start with cleansing.

Choosing a skin-friendly cleanser is of extreme importance. Washing the skin with the wrong cleanser can cause a disruption of oil and moisturize and even leave the skin feeling tight or itchy. Gentle, hydrating cleansers with minimal ingredients are always a safe bet since almost every skin type can safely handle them. From there, if necessary, you can select a cleanser that further targets specific skin conditions like dryness, breakouts or even discoloration. J

Exfoliate: A Weekly Treat

There’s no denying the power of a good exfoliator used once or twice weekly. With age, the rate at which the skin naturally sheds dead skin cells begins to slow down, which is where an exfoliator comes into play to assist in removing dead skin cells and keeping the pores clear and free of anything that can clog them. By removing dead skin cells, the skin will appear refreshed, smooth and with a natural glow since it can better reflect light.

Tone: Balance the Skin

You can apply a toner with your

fingers, a cotton round or even spray it onto the skin. For toner to work its magic and balance out the skin’s pH levels, making it harder for bacteria to live on the skin, the toner must fully immerse into the skin, so you may need to wait a few minutes between applying a toner and moving onto the following skin care routine steps.

Apply a Serum: Target Specific Concerns

Skincare serums, which you can use both morning and night, are a critical component you’ll want to consider when building your skincare routine. These skin-specific products treat and protect the skin while delivering powerful active ingredients to target many skin issues ranging from dark spots and fine lines

to hyperpigmentation and pollution damage. You can even layer different serums onto the skin as part of your skincare routine to address multiple concerns.

You don’t have to have a specific skincare issue to make a serum a step in your skincare routine (when that’s the case, stick with an antioxidantrich protective one to help limit premature aging). Since serums are chock-full of powerful, skin-friendly ingredients, all skin types benefit from them.

Moisturize: Lock in Hydration

All skin types, even oily complexions, need moisture in some form. The basic principle behind any moisturizer, no matter how light or rich it is, is to rehydrate the skin and soften it by preventing water loss.

Add Sunscreen: Your Daily Shield

Not a day should go by where you don’t wear sunscreen. An essential skin care routine step, sunscreen is a must for protecting the skin from harmful UV rays, even when the weather doesn’t look promising or you are spending time indoors since UV rays can still penetrate the skin through windows. Failing to protect the skin from the sun’s damaging effects is the number one reason the skin ages prematurely. That’s why daily, consistent use of sunscreen is imperative to prevent the formation of fine lines and wrinkles, discoloration, premature aging, textural changes, and even skin cancer

Follow a Specific Nighttime Routine: Repair and Rejuvenate

When it comes to your nighttime skin care routine steps, you’ll want to follow everything you do during the day except for the sunscreen . Since the skin rejuvenates itself while you sleep, a nighttime skin care routine is the perfect time to focus on repairing the damage that the skin incurs during the day with specific night creams and serums, which usually contain stronger active ingredients and those that are sun sensitivity, like retinol.

On average, it can take two months or more to notice the benefits of a skin care routine or new skincare products. But even though it may take time to see the effects of following a well-structured routine and following it every day, it’s worth it.

My wife asked for a trial separation three months ago. She’d been through a lot with the death of her father, and she said she needed time by herself. I tried to help her and suggested therapy, and so-forth, but I had no choice other than to agree to her moving out, so that she could have time to ‘deal with her feelings‘. She rented a small Apartment, but would not tell me where it was. I have been transferring money to her every month to help her. But something was not right; my phone calls and messages went unanswered. Friends and family were suspicious and advised me to get to the bottom of things. One day I followed her home from work; until then, I hadn’t known where she’d moved to. I watched from my car until I saw another man walk to her door. I am pretty devastated, but had my suspicions all along that her needing space, was a ruse.

Your wife has not been honest with you as to why she wanted to move out. Grief can play a very big part in wanting to change life, but she was not fair to you, and has not treated you well. A trial separation is so you can spend some time apart, whilst working on your relationship. It seems she has been working on a different relationship. You tried everything from suggesting couples therapy to helping her yourself with her grief. I would suggest you contact her now, and tell her that you know she is seeing someone else. Sadly, you may have to regard the marriage as being over now, and see a Lawyer.

AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine

discontinued in Europe

Europe bids farewell to AstraZeneca’s Covid-19 vaccine as the SwedishBritish company withdraws its product from the market. The European Commission has revoked its marketing authorization for the vaccine effective today. AstraZeneca cited a surplus of vaccine doses due to the development of multiple updated vaccines, resulting in decreased demand for its product, which is no longer being manufactured or supplied.

While highlighting its significant role in combating the pandemic, with over 3 billion doses delivered worldwide and over 6.5 million lives saved in the first year alone, the company’s decision to withdraw from the EU follows recent admissions of rare adverse effects such as thrombosis associated with its vaccine. This led to restrictions on its use among certain population segments.

Amid government efforts to tackle the pandemic in 2020, AstraZeneca secured deals to supply millions of doses to the EU and the US. However, concerns over potential links to thrombosis led to suspensions of vaccinations in countries like Austria and Spain. In April, the EU opted not to renew contracts to purchase the vaccine.

CD Los Montesinos

They did not celebrate it on the field of play but they will never forget the night in which they were champions of the old First Regional. CD Montesinos is in its own right the best team of the season in Second FFCV and this Thursday the mathematical confirmation arrived.

Willy ‘s boys followed the second half of Guardamar Soccer-CD Cox and celebrated the tie by Juanan Cases’ team as one of the 55 goals they have scored this season. It was a result that promoted them to Primera FFCV with two days left until the end of the championship.

The category has had a clear red and white tint since the starting signal in September. Nobody has managed to keep up with them and the winter signings have given the final push. Now they enter a new dimension for the club.

Former Australian Open winner Sofia Kenin raged at Italian Open officials

Former Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin raged Italian Open officials after being forced to play on despite wet conditions - before turning her anger to the spectators who booed her.

Russian-born American Kenin - who won her first ever Grand Slam at the Melbourne major in 2020 - went on to beat Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 6-2 on Wednesday but not before embarking on an X-rated outburst over the playing surface.

After missing a break point early in the first set, Kenin returned to her seat to complain to the umpire that the surface was to wet to play on amid rainy conditions.

The umpire told her ‘the court is not unplayable’, before the match supervisor came over to her to back up her decision, telling Kenin that play would resume and if conditions became unsafe, they would stop ‘immediately’.

But Kenin did not take kindly to being told to play on as she slammed her towel down onto her tennis bag and fumed: ‘F***ing dumb a** people,’ before storming back onto the court with her racquet.

The 25-year-old wasn’t done there though, as she lashed out at the crowd - who began to boo her after her initial refusal to come back onto court.

After her opponent smashed a shot into the net, Kenin turned around and screamed: ‘F*** you!’ - with the spectators getting behind home favourite Bronzetti.

She was later vindicated in her complaints over the conditions as play was briefly stopped a few points later due to rain.

Kenin recovered from her outburst to win in straight sets and will now take on

Tunisian star Ons Jabeur in the second round.

The Italian Open is notorious for booing players after Andy Murray was subjected to jeers last year following his row with the umpire Mohamed Lahyani during a match with Fabio Fognini.

The Scot had fumed over a ball that was not called out and remonstrated with the officials, with fans whistling him.

Lennox Lewis suggests that Tyson Fury faces further challenges, even with a victory over Oleksandr Usyk

For many, Lennox Lewis remains the ultimate heavyweight boxing champion, though there’s a contender on the horizon. Tyson Fury is poised to challenge that status, but Lewis believes there’s more to it than just defeating Oleksandr Usyk in their upcoming bout in May. However, there’s a contractual rematch with Usyk to consider, with Anthony Joshua patiently awaiting his turn. Lewis envisions a future where one of the sport’s luminaries aims to etch

their name as the greatest in the division.

Reflecting on his own journey, Lewis emphasized his pursuit of excellence: “I aimed to be the No. 1 guy in the division and sport.” He meticulously climbed the ranks, setting his sights on Olympic, British, European, and ultimately, undisputed champion titles.

If Fury manages to establish supremacy over Usyk, Joshua would inevitably come next, setting the stage for an unavoid-

able showdown if Fury seeks to cement his legacy as the best in his class.

While Fury’s schedule may seem packed, Lewis highlights the importance of facing Joshua to solidify his claim. “He does need to fight him because it is a British thing,” Lewis remarked, acknowledging the anticipation among British fans for a clash of heavyweight titans. Throughout boxing history, such matchups have been pivotal, defining moments in the sport.

Abbey Anglers

On Tuesday the 7th of May we ventured inland once again to spend two days fishing the Embalse de Argos near to Caravvaca de la cruz. I have said this many times that this is the jewel in the crown in our local match scene and once again it did not disappoint.

The match was pegged along either side of the match point with 8 anglers on each side. The weather was set fair and this continued for the two days with temperatures in the high twenties. You do have to be careful of the sun at this venue and one angler who shall remain nameless fished without a hat or parasol and paid the price with a slight sunstroke.

Winner on day one from peg 3 was Bob Robinson. Bob fished the method feeder with corn, maggots and pellets and caught some nice carp for 22.84kg.this victory also meant that Bob took the Spring series by 1 point

from Richard Wood.

In Second place from peg 18 on the sunny side, yes I know the numbering system went array, was Terry Stroud, who despite a broken rod, landing net pole and reel managed to winkle out 19kg of carp and barbel on the slow sinker.

In third place from the end peg on the cold side was Willy Moons. Willy fished the method feeder with wafters and caught consistently and weighed 18.16kg.

The other weights were a little bit down but the venue always fishes a bit moody on the first day.

Rods N Reels

After an overnight stay in both the hotel and a nearby ouse we returned to the venue refreshed and ready for another exciting day. This was in fact the case with the weights much better on the second day.

Winner on the day was Willy Moons. Willy had travelled up with his wife

who spent the day in Carravaca on the pilgrim trail visiting certain chapels and churches. We were all convinced that she was saying the odd prayer for his fishing as he never stopped catching all day long. Willy again fished the method feeder with a red wafter from peg 6 and weighed a fantastic 44.76kg. In second place was Graham Patterson. Graham fished a cage feeder from peg 18 and also caught consistently and weighed 31.26kg. In third place from the dark side was Barry Smith. Barry fished the cage feeder at distance with maggots and caught steadily throughout the day. He weighed mainly carp for 30.16kg. The previous day Barry from a nearby peg had performed a swallow dive stright into the water from his chair as he lost his ballance. He spend most of that day drying off so it was nice to see him have a good day.
