Torrevieja’s ‘hippie stalls’ relocated due to port works

Torrevieja has started relocating 25 craft stalls, known locally as the “hippie stalls,” to accommodate

the construction of a new roundabout that will provide access to an upcoming underground parking lot in

the Paseo del Mar leisure area. This project is part of the city’s redevelopment plans for the port area.

The City Council has invested over half a million euros in the roundabout, which is projected to be completed by summer, with the parking lot opening expected in August. However, these are tentative deadlines.

Construction has started on the road connecting the roundabout with the leisure area, running between Paseo de la Libertad and the Customs building. The relocated craft stalls are now situated on a cement slab parallel to Paseo de la Libertad.

While most of the wooden stalls operate year-round, some had been closed and deteriorated over time. The current huts replaced temporary vendor structures about a decade ago.

The roundabout construction has also seen the need for the removal of several large date palms, with their fate still unclear. The relocation of the stalls has highlighted their previous role in creating a barrier, alongside the now-

demolished construction fencing, obstructing access and views of the bay. However, this unobstructed view will soon change as new concrete structures rise in the central city area for the new leisure zone.

The final adaptation and pedestrianization project for the port area will distribute the

craft vendors into four separate areas around the Customs building and the Man of the Sea monument. Maintaining the current number of nearly 200 businesses may be challenging. Municipal reports suggest the number of stalls could be reduced to around 100, though city officials aim to keep numbers close to the current count.

This project significantly impacts traffic, especially in summer when the area sees over 5,000 vehicles daily.

Councillor for Traffic, Federico Alarcón, mentioned that efforts to manage the construction alongside peak season traffic will involve closing seafront roads, similar to last summer. Adjustments include using the Ramón Gallud as the main access, María Parodi Street for reaching promenades with some detours, and Rambla Juan Mateo and Ramón y Cajal Streets for exiting the centre.

The leisure area development involves over 40 million euros of private investment, including 8,000 square meters of restaurants, multiplex cinemas, and other facilities.

“Get your TIE now” is the message from the British Embassy

The British Embassy is urging all British people who live in Spain and are still in possession of a Green Certificate to apply for the TIE, or‘Tarjeta de identidad de extranjero’ if they haven’t done so already.

The biometric TIE, which came into force in 2021, proves that the holder is a Withdrawal Agreement beneficiary with the right to reside and work in Spain. Most British people living in Spain already have the TIE, having abandoned the formerly issued paper Green Certificate following Brexit.

The British Embassy is asking those still using a Green Certificate to follow suit and get a TIE as soon as possible, ahead of the introduction of the EU’s new Entry Exit System (EES), expected in Autumn this year.

His Majesty’s Ambassador to Spain, Hugh Elliott said:“It’s really important that any British person who lives in Spain gets the TIE - not only because it is the most durable and dependable way to prove your rights

in Spain, but also to avoid disruption at the border when the EU’s Entry Exit Scheme comes into force.

We are working with the Spanish Government and the EU to prepare for the implementation of this new scheme and we have requested that more TIE appointments are made available. Please keep checking our Living In Guide and social media pages for more information.”

The EES will require all non-EU short stay travellers to register via an automated system at the border. They will need to provide their name, passport details, biometric data (fingerprints and captured facial images) and the date and place of entry and exit upon entering Spain. This will replace the current passport stamping at the border. These details will be held on file for three years, meaning Britons making repeat visits to Spain within a three-year period will not have to go through the same registration process each time.

To be exempt from registering with the EES, British residents in the EU will need to show a valid uniform-format biometric card, which in Spain is the TIE. The nonbiometric Green Certificate, though a valid residency document in Spain, was issued prior to EU Exit and does not feature in the EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement or in Annex 22 of the Schengen Border Guard Handbook. Therefore, it is expected that Green Certificate holders may lose out on the chance to be exempt from registering. As a result, they may encounter difficulties and delays at the border, especially when entering other EU countries where the Green Certificate may not be recognised.

The process for securing a TIE appointment and the card itself is run by the Spanish Government. More information on how to apply, including links to Spanish Government websites where the applications are made, can be found on the ‘Living in Spain’guide on gov.uk.

Brit arrested in Torrevieja Cannabis Club drug trafficking bust

A British expatriate has been arrested by the Guardia Civil in connection with drug tra cking activities at a Torrevieja cannabis club popular among foreign tourists. The club, which was intended for the legal consumption of marijuana by members, was found to be illegally selling drugs, prompting a raid and subsequent closure.

The incident began to unfold in early April when the club was initially shut down by authorities. Despite this closure, the establishment reopened illegally, leading to the arrest of two Columbian nationals on May 2. Cannabis clubs in Spain operate under strict regulations that permit the consumption of marijuana on the premises

by members only, but selling drugs remains prohibited. The Guardia Civil’s crackdown on such activities is part of a broader e ort, with 20 clubs in Torrevieja having been closed since 2019. The investigation into this particular club commenced in February following multiple complaints about drug sales to foreign tourists. It was soon revealed that the club was functioning under the pretence of being a non-pro t organization, which it used as a front for its illicit drug tra cking operations. During the course of the investigation, authorities issued numerous infraction orders to non-Spanish individuals found

in possession of hashish and marijuana as they left the club premises. The pivotal moment came on April 3, when a search of the club led to the seizure of various quantities of drugs and the arrest of a 37-year-old British man for selling narcotics.

A court order temporarily closed the club to allow further investigation. However, the club de ed this ruling and resumed operations, resulting in the May 2 arrests of the two Columbians, aged 22 and 27. They face charges of drug tra cking and serious disobedience to authority.

In addition to these arrests, the club’s key o cials, including the president, secretary, and treasurer, are under investigation

for drug tra cking and other o enses, including belonging to a criminal group.

The Guardia Civil’s operation culminated in the seizure of substantial quantities of drugs, including 4.84 kilograms of marijuana, 966 grams of hashish, pre-rolled joints, and a signi cant amount of cash.

In response to these violations, the Torrevieja court has ordered that the club remain closed for a period of ve years. This decisive action underscores the authorities’ commitment to curbing illegal drug activities in the region and ensuring that cannabis clubs operate within the legal framework established in Spain.

Survey reveals frustration over medical appointments

Torrevieja’s Platform for Public Health has released the results of a recent survey highlighting significant public dissatisfaction with delays in obtaining medical appointments. The survey, which involved 58 participants, revealed that 86.2% of respondents were either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied with the current state of healthcare accessibility in the region.

Access to healthcare is a fundamental right in Spain, underpinning the Welfare State and ensuring universal and equitable healthcare for all citizens. However, the Regional Ministry of Health in the Valencian Community is currently failing to uphold this right within the Torrevieja Health Authority, particularly concerning nonurgent medical attention.

The Primary Care network in the Torrevieja department comprises 11 health centres and 11 clinics, organised into five basic health areas. These facilities collectively serve over 205,000 people holding SIP cards. Despite this extensive network, there is a significant disparity in waiting times for medical appointments across the five health areas, contributing to widespread dissatisfaction.

In response to these delays, the Platform for Public Health demands comprehensive information on the causes of non-urgent appointment delays in primary care and paediatrics. This includes data on doctorto-patient ratios, structural or circumstantial causes of delays, peculiarities of each health area, and referral rates to specialized care and emergency services.

Specialised care in Spain is governed by national framework criteria designed to ensure timely access to healthcare services, diagnostic tests, and surgical operations. These criteria, agreed upon by all autonomous communities, also mandate the periodic publication of waiting list information. This transparency is essential for identifying issues and setting priorities in healthcare programming from a global and multidisciplinary perspective.

Despite official promises of investments and plans to reduce waiting list delays, there is growing concern among healthcare users in Torrevieja. Budget cuts have hampered the health authority’s ability to implement necessary improvements, such as increasing the number of beds, operating rooms, and outpatient

consultations. The lack of a clear replacement plan for these budget cuts has only heightened public anxiety and exacerbated the delays in medical services.

The Platform for Public Health’s survey underscores the urgent need for action to address these delays and restore public confidence in the healthcare system. The platform calls for greater transparency and accountability from the Regional Ministry of Health and urges immediate measures to reduce waiting times and improve healthcare access for all residents of the Torrevieja Health Authority.

In conclusion, the survey results highlight a critical issue facing the healthcare system in Torrevieja. With the majority of respondents expressing dissatisfaction with the current situation, it is clear that significant improvements are needed to ensure timely and equitable access to medical services. The Platform for Public Health’s demands for detailed information and effective action plans represent a crucial step towards addressing these challenges and enhancing the overall quality of healthcare in the region.

Spain is world leader for Blue Flag beaches, 30 years running

Once again, Spain holds more blue flags for its beaches and marinas than any other country in the world – a record it has held without interruption for 30 years.

This year, following the official blue-flag awarding procedure, Spain’s beaches hold a total of 638 of these prestigious kitemarks –11 more than in 2023 – with the east-coast province of Alicante boasting the highest number.

Another 102 blue flags went to leisure ports – every single applicant in this category - and seven to tour boats.

Following a trend that began to take off two years ago, a growing number of inland beaches have been applying for – and earning – blue flags, with 11 of these in the land-locked western region of Extremadura, whose nearest sea coast is in Portugal.

The newest inland beach entry is for Lerate Bay in Guesalez, Navarra, a single-province region that does not have a coast.

In fact, despite only eight of the 15 regions in mainland Spain having a seashore, a total of 11 now have blue-flagged beaches –only Castilla y León and CastillaLa Mancha, in the centre of the

country, and Aragón and La Rioja in the north, currently have none.

Spain accounts for 15% of blueflagged beaches on earth, and has consistently beaten every other country since 1994, with Greece and Turkey second and third.

This year, eight beaches earned their first-ever blue flag, and 33 others, which had lost theirs in previous years, won them back.

Here in the the Comunidad Valenciana, our region continues to hold the most blue flags –159, being six more than in 2023 – followed by Andalucía, in the south, with 156, and Galicia, in the far north-west, with 125. Beaches in seven towns in Spain have held blue flags nonstop since the award was created in 1987. All of these, other than Bastiagueiro beach in Oleiros, Galicia, are in the Comunidad Valenciana. The remaining six are Sant Joan beach (Alicante), La Fossa (Calpe), and Carrer la Mar (El Campello), all in the province of Alicante; Playa Nord (Gandia) and Playa Sant Antoni (Cullera), in the province of Valencia; and El Carregador in Alcalá de Xivert, in the province of Castellón.

Letter bomb suspect, aged 74, goes on trial

Pompeyo González Pascual, a 74-year-old pensioner from northern Spain, went on trial last week at Madrid’s Audiencia Nacional, facing serious charges related to terrorism and the manufacture of explosives.

If convicted, González Pascual could face up to 22 years in prison for allegedly sending letter bombs to six high-profile targets in late 2022.

González Pascual, a retired official of the Vitoria Council in the Basque Country who also reportedly worked as a gravedigger, is accused of sending the explosive devices to Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Defence Minister Margarita Robles, the US and Ukrainian embassies, a Spanish arms manufacturer, and a significant Spanish military base.

The indictment claims González Pascual opposed the support provided by Madrid and Washington to Ukraine following Russia’s invasion in February 2022. His alleged intent was to disrupt these positions and cause significant turmoil within Spanish society.

The trial, scheduled to continue until Thursday, commenced with González Pascual

hearing the charges against him. According to court documents, a Ukrainian embassy staffer sustained minor injuries while handling one of the explosive packages, while the others were safely intercepted by security personnel.

An expert witness testified that González Pascual’s computer contained searches related to constructing explosive devices and visits to websites propagating information on the RussiaUkraine conflict.

González Pascual was arrested in January 2023 and held in pre-

trial detention until last month when a judge granted him conditional release. The judge cited a lack of evidence suggesting González Pascual could destroy evidence, reoffend, or had connections with any organized terror groups.

This arrest followed a New York Times report indicating that US and European investigators suspected Russian military intelligence officers had instructed associates of a Russia-based white supremacist group to execute the letter bomb campaign in Spain.

GBP

This week was relatively quiet in terms of data releases. The highlights were the UK’s Claimant Count Change and the Average Earnings Index which were released on Tuesday at 7am.

The Claimant Count Change, which measures the change in the number of people claiming unemployment bene ts, was expected to increase to 13.9K from 10.9K last month but came in signi cantly below expectations at 8.9K.

Average earnings were expected to increase by 5.3%, down from April’s 5.6% reading, but instead came in at 5.7%. The overall unemployment rate increased to 4.3% from the 4.2% seen in March, in line with market forecasts. The data seemed to have very little impact on the pound. However, some reports touched on how a cooling UK jobs market could increase the probability of an interest rate cut sooner rather than later.

Next week we’ll see the latest Services and Manufacturing PMIs released on Thursday and Retails Sales data from April due for release on Friday. Markets will be looking to see if the UK can continue to build on the overall upward trajectory on both Purchase Managers Index reports, as well as whether consumer spending will move the dial on the 0% readings seen in both February and March.

EUR

This week, the European Commission

GBP / EUR UPDATE

released its latest macroeconomic forecasts. The Commission publishes this report four times a year and focuses primarily on growth and in ation. The previous forecasts released in February downgraded the growth outlook for 2024.

The Spring forecasts reported a “slight uptick” in projections for growth across the EU, with GDP growth now expected to come in at 1% for 2024. The report described a comeback from the EU economy following a “prolonged period of stagnation” after it achieved an estimated 0.3% growth in the rst quarter of the year.

Monday, we also saw the Eurogroup Meetings, in which the Eurogroup President, Finance Ministers from euro area member states, the Commissioner for Economic and Monetary A airs, and the President of the European Central Bank met to discuss a range of nancial issues. The meeting was followed by a formal statement.

There will be a host of PMI data releases from across the EU next week. Policymakers in the bloc will be hoping the data builds on last month’s positivity after overall business activity expanded at its fastest rate in nearly a year, with the dominant services industry o setting a slight downturn in manufacturing.

Police close Almoradi hair salon for selling drugs

The Civil Guard has dismantled a hidden drug sales point in a hair salon in Almoradí where a woman was in charge of distributing drugs while two men, including her husband, were in charge of attracting clients and selling narcotic substances.

Last April, the Civil Guard received several anonymous complaints for which it began an investigation into the existence of a drug sales point in Almoradí. Reports indicated a constant ow of people, including minors, visiting the establishment both day and night, causing great concern in the community. In response to these complaints, the Almoradí Main Post Investigation Area deployed operation Kuafor24.

In the rst phase of the operation, with the crucial support of the Almoradí Local Police, they con rmed the constant coming and going of individuals in the premises, which increased the suspicions of the authorities. In addition, they led ten administrative complaints for carrying small amounts of drugs on public roads near the establishment, which further strengthened the investigation.

The investigations revealed that behind the owner of the business, a 29-year-old woman

who performed logistics functions, was her husband, who led the operation and was also in charge of sales to consumers.

Outside the hair salon, another individual acted as a recruiter for new clients. On April 26, once the three involved could be linked to the crime against public health for drug tra cking, a search was carried out in the business and two others in homes in Almoradí. For this important action, the agents had the support of the Citizen Security Unit of the Torrevieja Company and the Cynological

Service of the Alicante Command (trained dog units).

As a result of the operation, 152 grams of hashish were seized, as well as material for cutting, weighing and packaging the drug. The owner has been arrested for a crime against public health. For their part, the two men have been prosecuted for these events. The detainee, along with the seized e ects, has been placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction No. 1 of Orihuela, which ordered her release with precautionary measures.

“One man down” last week at Asociacion Help Vega Baja

Last week we were “one man down” as our President, Michele Masson, was in London at the invitation of the King to attend a garden party at Buckingham Palace.

Michele told us “following the award of a BEM at the New Year Honours list in January 2023, I received an invitation to attend the garden party.

Although a very long day due to train strikes, it was a truly wonderful day which I shared with my daughter and will remember always.

We were outside the palace some 2 hours early but with orders from ex

military husband to get there early we decided to stay and wait. The police were great and we had time to chat with them and some banter.

The main gates at the front of the palace were opened and my daughter Samantha and I went through with a sense of pride. The grounds at the back of the palace were outstanding. We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day.

The band played to the sea of beautiful people whilst I endeavoured to keep my hat on!

Afternoon tea was outstanding. The organisation something to behold as 4,000 people were served. The royals stood on the terrace and then “mingled” with the crowd.

A wonderful day making memories which will stay with me always

Many of the people invited were volunteers and it was inspiring to sit back and wonder at the support so many people had and continue to provide to people both in the UK and abroad.”

Regional government invests 4.7million to improve drainage at the river mouth in Guardamar

The General Directorate of Water of the Department of Environment, Water, Infrastructure and Territory of the Generalitat Valenciana has on public display the project for the maintenance and restoration of the slope of the new and old channel of the Segura River at its mouth in Guardamar del Segura, to improve drainage capacity. This is an action that is contained in the Cuenca Hydrological Plan and in the Flood Risk Management Plan

for the 2022-2027 cycle and that will be financed from the Next Generation funds.

The action is subject to Environmental Impact Assessment, so the general management has presented the project and the Environmental Impact study for evaluation and presentation of allegations.

Among the actions to improve drainage in both mouths will be the extraction of sediments and sand and dumping of sand to beaches if they are considered optimal for regeneration and,

the rest, to the sea or to a landfill, depending on the characterization, as explained by the Mayor of Guardamar del Segura, José Luis Sáez.

The action involves an investment of 4.7 million euros and an execution period of four and a half months to be carried out between the months of October and March due to environmental issues. Taking into account this circumstance and the legal times for public exhibition, observations and allegations and approval, the action will be carried out in 2025.

This summer is set to be one of Spain’s hottest and driest on record

Spain’s meteorological agency (Aemet) has issued a warning that this summer will be hotter and drier than usual. Drawing on weather forecasts from Copernicus, the European climate change service, Aemet predicts a high probability, ranging from 70% to 100%, of aboveaverage temperatures throughout Spain during the meteorological summer months of June, July, and August. This summer is expected to rank among the warmest on record in the country.

Furthermore, the forecast suggests a drier-thannormal summer, taking into account Spain’s typically low rainfall during this season.

“The Copernicus forecast indicates a summer with below-average rainfall as the most likely scenario,” stated Aemet spokesman Rubén del Campo on Monday.

Despite this general trend, the passage of a front this week will bring overcast skies and rain showers, particularly in the northern regions such as Galicia, Cantabria, and the upper

Ebro. Temperatures across Spain are expected to sharply decrease in the coming days, with some northern areas experiencing a drop of up to eight degrees compared to Monday’s temperatures. For instance, on Tuesday, many northern areas may not exceed 20 degrees Celsius.

This cooling trend will persist throughout the week, especially pronounced in the west and central regions where daytime temperatures could be five to ten degrees lower than usual, particularly

on Wednesday and Thursday. However, temperatures are expected to rise again towards the end of the week.

Regarding rainfall, fronts associated with Atlantic disturbances will bring rain primarily to the northern third of the country, potentially extending to other northern areas. Additionally, snowfall is forecasted in the Pyrenees mountains, expected to occur between 1,500 and 1,600 meters above sea level.

Alicante-Elche Airport on track to shatter 2023 passenger record

Alicante-Elche Airport is set to break its 2023 passenger record after achieving a remarkable milestone in April, welcoming nearly 1.6 million travellers—an increase of 10.8% compared to the same month last year. The Costa Blanca airport has seen a cumulative total of 4.8 million passengers in the rst four months of 2024, re ecting an impressive 18.5% rise from the same period in 2023. Additionally, the airport handled over 30,000 ights, marking an increase of more than 15%.

Last year, Alicante-Elche Airport recorded 15.9 million passengers, a gure set to be surpassed by November and December 2024, given the anticipated high tra c over the summer season. In April alone, the airport ranked as the fth busiest in Spain and recorded the highest year-on-year percentage growth among the country’s airports.

A signi cant portion of April’s passengers were international travellers, totalling 1.3 million—a 10% increase from the previous year. The United Kingdom led the arrivals with 552,320 passengers, followed by the Netherlands with 102,913 passengers, and Belgium with 81,690 passengers. Domestic travel also saw a boost, with 223,594 passengers representing a 15.8% increase.

Despite the surge in passenger numbers, Spain’s Transport Minister, Oscar Puente, has dismissed calls for a second runway at Alicante-Elche Airport. Instead, Puente advocates

for the construction of a second terminal to accommodate the rising passenger volumes. He stated that a new terminal would enable the airport to handle up to 26 million passengers annually, a signi cant increase from the current capacity of just under 16 million.

“Alicante’s infrastructure is far from its potential, not because it has one runway, but because it has other growth possibilities,” Puente explained.

The airport’s operator, Aena, plans to advertise a tender towards the end of the year for the expansion project, which has a budget of €600 million.

This follows an announcement in April regarding additional investment aimed at enhancing the

airport’s capacity and services.

“We will provide a terminal, more routes, and more capacity which will allow operations to grow,” said Puente.

Puente also highlighted that London-Gatwick Airport successfully serves 35 million passengers each year with a single runway, suggesting that Alicante-Elche can achieve similar e ciency with the right infrastructure improvements.

As Alicante-Elche Airport continues its upward trajectory, it stands poised to accommodate an ever-increasing number of passengers, solidifying its status as a key hub for both international and domestic travel in Spain.

Mari, the cat abandoned in the sun in Callosa

A case of animal abandonment in Callosa de Segura. In broad sunshine, at 2:30 p.m., a cat was found last Thursday inside a carrier at the doors of a house in the orchard along with a note that read:

“Her name is Mari, she is neutered, I can’t take care of her, she loses weight, I don’t have money for a veterinarian. She never went outside.

“She likes food from Mercadona bags”

From Felino Alegres and APADAC of Callosa de Segura they denounce the abandonment of this animal, also in those conditions inside a plastic carrier on a day with high temperatures that could have caused death from heat stroke.

Apparently, in the letter, its previous owner alleges that he cannot

care for the animal because he does not have the means to take it to the veterinarian, which does not justify his abandonment as Felinos Alegres reminds him, “since you can always ask for help, but not get rid of your responsibility.”

From APADAC they explain that they took the cat to the veterinarian and after performing the relevant tests it tested negative for diseases. Mari only had a “swollen throat and a little bit of snot,” a cold “that does not involve a high expense at the veterinarian” and in any case “abandonment has no justi cation.” Furthermore, let us remember that animal abandonment is included as a crime of abuse according to the Law.

Police arrest gang wanted for string of robberies across the Vega Baja

Agents of the National Police have arrested the three members of a traveling group, two men and a woman, dedicated to robbing homes that operated in the province, after being surprised by the owners of one of the homes that they intended to break into. While two of them were detained in the town of Torrevieja, the third was located and arrested in El Campello.

The events were learned through publications in several messaging application groups of residents of the Oriola district of Molins and the town of Bigastro that warned of the presence in both towns of a man and a woman whom they had seen trying to access to several homes, forcing the access doors to the properties.

For this reason, the Judicial Police agents began an investigation, collecting data on complaints in the indicated areas, even determining the vehicle in which they moved from one location to another perpetrating their crimes.

Surprised by the victim forcing the door of his home

Of the facts, in the case of Molins, the owner of a home located in this district, when she was arriving at the home together with a relative of hers, observed a man and a woman at the door of

her house, surprising her that the man was very close to the door.

The victim told the agents that when they asked them the reason for their presence at the door of their house, they answered them with incoherent phrases and did everything possible to quickly escape from there. However, she could see the vehicle in which they were leaving.

These data provided by Molins’ neighbor coincided with what the investigators already had in terms of the characteristics of the perpetrators and the vehicle used.

In another incident, which occurred in the same district, ten minutes before the previous incident, the perpetrators had been recorded by the video surveillance cameras that the victim had installed in his home, from which he could see these same two people. in the entrances to their home, which they nally did not access.

The third event that the researchers learned about and that provided new data of great relevance to the investigation, occurred around the same hours of the day following the previous ones, this time in the town of Bigastro.

In this case, the authors were

recorded with their mobile phone by a witness who found the attitude of a man and a woman who were at the door of a home strange. The man stuck to the door and manipulating the lock area and the woman in a vigilant attitude and trying to hide the man’s maneuver with her body.

The witness alerted another person who was with him to call the police while he himself recorded with his mobile phone, at which point a neighbor in the area suddenly appeared, making those investigated realize that they had been discovered, so They quickly got into a vehicle, apparently driven by another person, and left the scene.

With this data, the Judicial Police agents established a special surveillance device, aimed at locating those investigated, while they continued with the investigations related to the investigation of more useful data to determine the identities of the woman and the man, as well as like that of the third individual who was waiting for them in the vehicle.

The three components identi ed

The police investigations led the agents to an identi cation of those investigated in a routine Civil Guard check when they were on board the vehicle under

investigation after one of the events investigated.

In this control, the owner of the vehicle was identi ed as its driver and a woman who was the copilot, as well as a man who was in the back seat, and it was possible to determine that the woman and the occupant of the back seat were the same people who appeared. in the videos recorded by Bigastro’s witness.

Finally, after establishing a

search device, they were located and detained in di erent locations. The driver of the vehicle and the woman were located and arrested in Torrevieja, while the other man was arrested on public roads in the town of El Campello.

After the house searches carried out, the agents managed to seize 536 euros in cash, a compressed air gun and pellets, as well as a complete set of lockpicks and a bag with a bowler hat and two keys.

Another Fun Packed Gathering of Shipmates

The 51 participants at the recent monthly Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch (RNATB) Meeting in May, which included 2 new joiners and 2 guests, all congratulated four New Members while they had their photo taken with the RNATB Chairman and received their Membership Card and Badge; and can now proudly call themselves RNATB Shipmates (S/M’s).

The four new Shipmates were, John Donaldson, Ex Royal Marine, his partner Cherylle Murry and Poline & Graham Humphrey, who were both civilians and were part of the National Theatre; which demonstrates the diversity and inclusiveness for like-minded people who share the Ethos of the RNATB of Unity, Loyalty, Patriotism and Comradeship and strive to uphold the core values

centred on the seven components (Seven Cs) of Comradeship which are, Companionship, Community, Connection, Compassion, Care, Commemoration and Celebration, and seek to maintain the naval ethos and enjoy sharing experiences and having fun at both formal and social events with like-minded people while supporting each other in times of need.

The S/M’s also gave a round of applause when S/M Joan Ward received her Independent Auditors Badge from the Chairman.

The meeting also included an update on all the up-andcoming social events and another amusing and educational recital from S/M Graham Shelton, who has the a ectionate title of

‘Schoolie’, and endeavours to unravel the complexity and almost nonsensical unique language of the Royal Navy Sailors that has built up over centuries and is known as “Jack Speak”.

The title of his rendition this month was ‘Women at Sea’ and charted some of the changes on military ships from under sail in Admiral Lord Nelsons time to present day. Which was coincidentally very apt as it followed one of the branches newer members, S/M Amanda Clancy, who served in the Royal Navy as a Petty O cer (PO) and gave a light-hearted summary of her ‘time served in the mob’ [Jack speak for career in the RN] and some of the changes that she experienced.

The meeting included the usual

‘Tot Time’, where the branch funds the RN sailors traditional measure of Rum (some choose a less potent form of alcohol) to toast important occasions or historic events that are to occur for the month ahead, and importantly of course that of ‘happy birthday’ to all the S/M’s for the month.

The meeting ended on the usual high note of the Ra e, which had some thirty prizes and left the S/M’s high with anticipation for the gathering in June.

Meetings at Dilly’s Bar, Av. Castuera, 3, 03184 El Chaparral, Alicante. Group meetings on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 10:00 to 12:00. The Next meeting is on Wednesday 12th June 2024. You are welcome to attend.

“What is 2 Factor Authentication, and should I use it”?

Multifactor authentication (MFA; two-factor authentication, or 2 Factor Authentication (2FA), along with similar terms) is an electronic authentication method in which a user is granted access to a website or application only after successfully presenting two or more pieces of evidence (or factors) to an authentication mechanism. MFA protects

personal data—which may include personal identi cation or nancial assets—from being accessed by an unauthorised third party that may have been able to discover, for example, a single password.

Signing in with both a password and a second step on your phone protects against password-stealing scams. Even if someone gets your password online, they won’t also have your phone.

“I have just bought a new laptop, but it does not have a CD/DVD drive. Can I add an optical drive”?

Modern laptops and desktops are pushing to be smaller and sleeker, with many companies advertising their computers as “ultra-thin” or “easily portable.”

An optical disk drive would signi cantly increase the size of a laptop.

If you need a CD/DVD optical drive you can buy a USB CD/DVD drive/burner. No extra driver required.

Plug an external CD/DVD drive/burner into a USB port, it will install the driver and be recognised by your computer automatically.

“My WhatsApp calls are very poor. What could be the reason”?

Santander bank falls victim to cyber attack

Santander bank has fallen victim to a cyber attack, resulting in the exposure of information from some of its customers in Spain, Chile, and Uruguay to cybercriminals.

The bank o cially acknowledged the breach on Tuesday (May 14th) to Spain’s National Securities Market Commission (CNMV), revealing that there was “unauthorized access to a database.”

Additionally, data pertaining to “all employees and some former employees of the group,” excluding those in Germany, was accessed by the hackers. This comprises information on approximately 200,000 current and former employees.

Santander assured CNMV that it took immediate action to address the breach, including blocking access to the compromised database and reinforcing fraud prevention measures to safeguard customers. While the bank did not specify the number of a ected customers or the type of data compromised, industry sources suggest that millions of individuals, including personal data, may have been impacted.

However, Santander clari ed that the compromised information does not include highly sensitive data such as passwords. “There is no transactional information or access credentials for internet banking within the database,” Santander stated in its communication to CNMV.

The bank emphasized that its operations and systems remain una ected, allowing customers to continue their transactions as usual. Santander is actively notifying all customers whose data has been breached.

The cyber attack exploited vulnerabilities in the bank’s systems through a database hosted on a server managed by one of its suppliers. Such attacks on companies working for banks are common, as these thirdparty rms often have weaker security measures than the parent company.

Santander, chaired by Ana Botín, expressed regret over the incident and is “proactively” informing a ected customers and employees. The bank has

also reported the breach to law enforcement, prompting an investigation.

Under current regulations, Spanish banks must promptly inform the Spanish Data Protection Agency (AEPD), the European Central Bank (ECB), and CNMV in the event of a signi cant data breach. The ECB has levied substantial nes on banks that failed to report hacking incidents promptly.

In March of this year, Santander’s Spanish customers experienced a widespread computer error involving duplicate charges in their accounts. At the time, the bank attributed it to a “display error” and denied unauthorized access to its systems, unlike the recent cyber attack.

Lovely Jubbly!

A little test for you. What or who do these words remind you of? Luvvly jubbly, mangetout, millionaire, plonker. No prizes for guessing something which probably 90% know the answer to. Del Boy of only fools and horses fame, of course. And if this make you smile reminiscently then you should put the 25 May, in your diary right now¡ Because that is the day that Age Concern are holding their “Only fools and horses extravaganza”. It could be called an immersive experience because Del Boy’s stall will be selling his dodgy gear, but there will also be a band of jolly, honest stallholders who will be selling a huge assortment of goods all guaranteed to do what it says on the tin. There will be a barbecue, so don’t eat before you come, and a raffle with a first prize of a television donated by Del Boy, of course, so it definitely works, you have his word¡¡ Music will be provided by

the Melody Makers, and you might catch a glimpse of Trigger, sweeping up with his faithful old broom. And more than likely Rodney might be wandering around being an absolute Plonker.

All this will be held at the Age Concern Centre - Calle Paganini Urb. La Siesta ,next to the Police Station, 03184 Torrevieja, Saturday

May 25 starting at 10am.

So come on down you know it makes sense.

Oh, if you are wondering where the title of the show came from, its an old cockney saying, which implies that if you are smart enough you will find a way to earn a living without resorting to hard graft

Girls Aloud returned to the stage for the rst time in 11 years as their reunion tour kicked o in Dublin with a heartbreaking tribute to the late Sarah Harding.

Nadine Coyle, Cheryl, Nicola Roberts, Kimberley Walsh made up the iconic girl band alongside Sarah until her tragic death from cancer in 2021.

But over a decade after their last performance, Girls Aloud reunited on Friday at Dublin’s 3Arena for the rst night of their comeback arena tourwhich is dedicated to Sarah.

Former Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne has revealed he ‘almost died’ after being stung by a dragon y whilst on holiday with his wife in Mexico.

The multi-millionaire, 75, shared that after contracting an infection he was left with a ‘dryness’ in his throat that left him struggling to speak, when a doctor gave him an injection to treat the sting.

Speaking to Evan Davis on BBC Radio 4’s Decisions That Made Me A Leader, Duncan recalled: ‘I almost died in Mexico, just a few weeks ago.

’I got this infection in my hand. It was a bite and it’s swelling. There were seven couples and a woman said: ‘’You have to get a doctor.’’

‘My wife phoned the doctor. I lay on the bed and he says he’s going to give me an injection because it’s a dragon y.

He injected me into my hip and I turn on my back. ‘I was lying there, he was talking to my wife and I had this dryness come up through my oesophagus. I was so dry and I

.couldn’t speak. And my heart started - bump, bump bump bump bump, bump, bump.’

Duncan added that he managed to catch the medic’s attention again, explaining: ‘He gave me this injection and it took it away. And then they got some pills from the pharmacist.’

He added he’s now ‘seriously’ considering planning his will, in case he has another health scare in the future.

Kate Garraway proved to be an unlikely champion of Giovanni Pernice as she threw her support behind the star following his shock Strictly exit.

It emerged on Thursday that the dancer, 33, had quit the show amid a restorm over his ‘militant’ training style with celebrities, with the Italian said to have found the scrutiny ‘too much’ to take.

The following day it was revealed that three contestants - Amanda Abbington and two unnamed - had instructed lawyers, prompting an internal review by the BBC.

One star who had previously spoken out about Giovanni’s teaching style was Ranvir Singh, who admitted to feeling ‘scared’ of the Italian when they were partnered in the 2020 series.

Yet her Good Morning Britain co-host Kate, 57, seemed to think di erently as she reacted to the initial reports that Giovanni was walking away from the show.

The Red Cross in Guardamar receives nearly 170 cleaning and personal hygiene kits

On the 25th of April, Specsavers Ópticas and Rotary Club Guardamar visited the Red Cross warehouse in Guardamar to deliver kits of toiletries and cleaning products for the home. They delivered 48 men’s kits, 48 women’s kits, 24 for children and babies and 48 cleaning kits – nearly 170 in total. The charity will now distribute them to those in need in Guardamar, who nd it impossible to a ord the high cost of these items.

Francisco Jurado is President of the Rotary Club Guardamar and store director of Specsavers Ópticas in Guardamar, Torrevieja and La Zenia and has been working on this campaign since December last year. All the stores collected products from generous customers and residents in December and January and collections were also undertaken through the Rotary Club.

To ful l the need identi ed by the charity, nancial donations were also made by the Rotary Club Guardamar and the Specsavers Ópticas stores that Francisco runs. They are very proud to present this donation to the charity, which will make a real di erence to vulnerable individuals and families living in this area.

He explains, ‘We are delighted to support the Red Cross in Guardamar, an excellent charity, that we have supported many times in the

past. The charity contacted us in December last year to say that they had a shortage of baby care products, cleaning products and toiletries and asked for support.

Unfortunately, many people in our community are struggling with the increasing cost of food and basic supplies and so the demand has signi cantly grown. We’d like to thank everyone who donated during the collection period, and the team at Rotary for their fundraising e orts. These kits will make an enormous di erence to families who are really struggling.’

Guardamar’s Rotary Club raises funds for a number of local charities, as well as supporting and developing initiatives which are positive for the community. They regularly support the Red Cross, IES Les Dunes secondary school in Guardamar, the local food bank and Cáritas. They fundraise through events and collections in association with local businesses and are collecting used glasses to give the gift of sight. They are also working hard on a new project to support students at the IES Les Dunes high school in Guardamar through training and professional development. This will make it easier for the students to nd jobs when they leave school.

Reasons to Book Professional Facial Treatment

Professional facial treatments are an integral part of a comprehensive skincare regimen. With the ever-increasing demand for youthful and healthy skin, the importance of professional facials has risen signi cantly in recent years. Here are some of the key bene ts that make professional facial treatments a must-have for anyone looking to maintain a healthy complexion:

Customized Skincare:

One of the biggest advantages of professional facials is the ability to customize the treatment according to an individual’s speci c skin type and concerns. We will assess the skin, identify any problems, and create a customized treatment plan that addresses your speci c needs. This ensures that the treatment is tailored to the individual and provides the best possible results.

Deep Cleansing: Professional facials provide a deep cleansing of the skin, removing dirt, oil, and impurities that can clog pores and cause skin problems such as acne, blackheads, and whiteheads. This deep cleansing is not achievable through at- home skincare routines, making professional facials a crucial part of a comprehensive skincare regimen.

Exfoliation:

Facials also include exfoliation, which is essential for removing dead skin cells and improving skin texture and tone. This is crucial for maintaining a youthful, radiant complexion and preventing prematureImprovingaging.skin texture and appearanceUnclogging pores and reducing breakouts

Stimulating circulation and promoting a healthy glow

Enhancing the e ectiveness of skincareReducingproducts the appearance of ne lines and wrinkles

Preventing ingrown hairs

Regular exfoliation, when done properly, can leave skin looking brighter, smoother, and younger.

Professional-Grade Products:

Professional facial treatments use high-quality, professional- grade skincare products that are not available over-the-counter. These products are more potent and e ective than at-home skincare products, providing better results and a more radiant complexion.

Improved Circulation: Facials promote increased blood ow and oxygenation of the skin, which is essential for maintaining a healthy and youthful complexion. This improved circulation can also help reduce the appearance of ne lines and wrinkles.

Relaxation:

Facials provide a relaxing and pampering experience that can help reduce stress and promote a sense of well-being. This can have a positive impact on both physical and mental health, making facials not just a skincare treatment, but also a form of self-care.

Prevention of Premature Aging:

Regular facial treatments can help prevent premature aging by keeping the skin healthy and hydrated. By removing dead skin cells, unclogging pores, and promoting circulation, facials can help slow down the aging process and keep skin looking youthful and radiant.

Improved Skin Function: Facials can improve the skin’s natural functions, such as hydration and cell turnover, which are critical for maintaining healthy, youthful skin.

In addition to the bene ts mentioned above, professional facial treatments can also be used to treat speci c skin concerns, such as acne, rosacea, hyperpigmentation, and more. We can recommend the best treatment plan for these concerns, which may include Carbon laser peels, microneedling, and other advanced skincare treatments.

In conclusion, professional facial treatments are an important aspect of a comprehensive skincare routine. They provide deep cleansing, exfoliation,

customized skincare, use of professional-grade products, improved circulation, relaxation, prevention of premature aging, and improved skin function.

Regular facials can help maintain healthy, youthful skin and provide a relaxing, pampering experience. It is recommended to schedule professional facials on a regular basis, typically once every 4-6 weeks, to maintain optimal skin health and appearance.

My ex-partner and I had been trying for a baby for 3 years. We have had 5 attempts at IVF also, without luck. It was more important to my partner that we had children, than it was for me; but I was willing and even looking forward to one day becoming a mother. Over time he began to blame me for my not producing a child, and I discovered that he was seeing someone else. Last week after a lot of talking things through, he said he was leaving, and he said it was because I couldn’t give him children. I don’t know how he could be so brutal. He is now living with this other woman, and I know that sooner or later they will have a child, because this is what he wants more than anything. I don’t know if I can go on.

will see this in time. What this man did was callous, and you might pity his new partner. However you are understandably hurting right now. I am suggesting you have some counselling sessions, available through your GP and online. If you have friends and family you can talk to, then you should rally round support. You deserve someone who values you for who you are; not just a baby making machine. In time, you will find someone who wants the same things out of life as you do, so don’t stop looking. There are plenty of good guys around.

Truck its traffic lig t in Torrevieja city centre causing chaos

Last Thursday morning, a trailer truck became stuck at the intersection of Rambla Juan Mateo and Ramón Gallud streets in Torrevieja after knocking down a tra c light. This incident caused a signi cant tra c jam in the city center.

The truck, loaded with sh from the sh market, was attempting to exit the city center via Rambla Juan Mateo street. However, access to the usual route for cargo vehicles from the sh auction at the port of Torrevieja had been blocked for over a week due to construction work on a roundabout for a new leisure area near Waldo Calero square.

As the truck tried to make a right turn onto Ramón Gallud Street, an improperly parked vehicle obstructed its maneuver, leading to a collision with a nearby tra c light. The resulting congestion a ected several urban transport lines that pass through the area.

Local police quickly arrived at the scene, closing o tra c on Rambla Juan Mateo and attempting to alleviate congestion on Ramón

Gallud Street.

The ongoing construction of a roundabout for access to the leisure area has forced trucks loading at the sh market to use an alternate, obstacle-laden route to the port, particularly for destinations like Murcia or Cartagena via the N-332.

Exiting the city via Diego Ramírez Avenue and Orihuela Street is also

challenging after turning onto Apolo Street. Additionally, heavy tra c on the Ricardo Lafuente ring road and Rosa Mazón Avenue has been exacerbated by diversions from the La Hoya road, which will be partially closed throughout the summer due to construction work on a large-scale urbanization project.

In second place is Jon Rahm, the Spanish golfer who recently joined the LIV Golf Tour. Rahm was enticed by the circuit’s signi cant nancial backing, with $198 million of his total earnings of $218 million coming from this new venture.

Other notable golfers among the top 50 earners include Rory McIlroy ($80.1M, 19th), Tiger Woods ($67.2M, 23rd), Scottie Sche er ($59.2M, 29th), and Cameron Smith ($48M, 43rd).

Sheerin’s Golf Society “Denise Tyrrell Plaque” at El Plantio

This is the eighth year playing for the Denise Tyrrell Plaque. Denise sadly passed away in 2015 aged 47, she was co-owner with Nikki Large of Baybrooks Restaurant in Algorfa and we thank Baybrooks for their continuing support in sponsoring the plaque and the day’s golf in her memory.

The day started with 23 players meeting for breakfast at Sheerin’s.

The weather was perfect for golf with clear blue skies and a temperature of 25 degrees. The format was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups and with 23 players all scores were close from the lowest 25 points to the winning score of 39 points.

Considering the high season prices the course was not up to its usual standard with some of the fairways covered over with white sheeting due to the ground being under repair.

Winner of the “Denise Tyrrell Plaque” from group A was “Ding Dong” Joe Bell with a score of 39 points, runner up was “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with a score of 38 points, third place was Steve Hopkins with 37 points and fourth place on count back with “Footsie” Lee George was “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 33 points. Winner of group B on count back with Steve Day was “Hammer” Gary Smith with 37 points, runner up

was “Sat Nav” Steve Day also 37 points. Nearest the pins winners were group A hole 2 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, hole

8 “In for a Penny” Steve Gain, hole 14 “Flying Scotsman” Alan Martin, group B hole 4 Nick Chambers, hole 7 “Fish Called Wanda” Mo Chaplin and hole 13 Tony Alcock, best front 9 went to “Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre with 22 points and best back 9 went to “Mr Celtic” with 20 points. The €15 two’s pot was not won so carried over to our next game. There were two doubles knockout

competitions played as well, Peter Kelly and Paul Owen beat Steve Hopkins and Steve Gain 3 & 2, Steve Ayre and Lee George beat Mo Chaplin and Tom Goulden 3 & 2.

The football card was won by Dons Ralph with Manchester United winning €40 and adding another €40 for our chosen charities for 2024.

We would like to thank Donnie, Pat and staff at Sheerin’s Bar for the great food and great hospitality.

Lo Crispin Golf at Altaona

On 15th May 32 members and guests

‘teed it up’ at Altaona in Murcia to compete in the Society’ s second major of the year, our Spring Cup. Initially the weather for golf was almost perfect, with sun and hardly a breath of wind. However the breeze picked up considerably, making play problematic, especially those holes which played directly into it. But for me and a number of others the comparatively narrow fairways on many holes made play more problematic, as it was very difcult to play decent shots from the desert anking the fairways. The course is very unpleasing aesthetically, as in addition to large areas of desert, the whole place had

a feel of a building site. Furthermore, the lakes and ponds were all covered largely with green algae. Many of the fairways were bereft of decent grass, presumably as a consequence of the continuing drought. We returned to the Lo Crispin Tavern where Tapas were served and the day’s prizes were distributed.

1st Place - Sarah Potter 36 pts o 4 and Winner of The Spring Cup

2nd Place - Julie King 34 pts o 32

3rd Place - John Dunnion 33 pts o 29 (on count back)

4th Place - Mark Baker 33 pts o 13

N. T. P. on Par 3s

Hole 3 - Richard Brady

Hole 8 - Richard Brady

Hole 11 - Carl Rodel

Hole 17 - Bob Berry

The 2s ‘Pot’ was shared by Richard Brady, Mark Baker and Wayne Hills.

The Free Game Draw was won by Janet Candlin. Finally, our next game, an Individual Stableford competition and 2nd Eclectic of the year is at El Plantio on 29th May. Steve Harrington ( Membership Secretary)

On Tuesday the14th of May we shed the rst round of the summer series the El Bosquet complex. The complex has su ered lately from a slight pollution that unfortunately killed several sh. We thought that we were in for a bit of a sticky match with people struggling to catch. This turned out to be far from the truth with some great weights being caught.

Winner on the day was the old stalwart Lenny Bolton. Drawn on the fancied peg 26 he shed mainly the bomb with maggots and weighed 30.00kg.

On Wednesday the 15th of June we made the short journey to Murcia to sh the Rio Segura in the town centre. Only 7 members attended and on a warm but windy sunny day it was decided to sh a section of three below the ramp with the other section of 4 shing after the rst road bridge.

Bill cannon ran out the winner from peg 6 on the lower section, bill shed the feeder and weighed 16.16kg.

In second place was the match manager for the day Richard ”Tricky” Wood with 10.84kg from peg 1.

Alan Davies one of our Welsh raiders took 3rd place with 10.43kg all caught on the feeder.

A lot of small sh were caught on the day which did not make for good weights but bodes well for the future of the river.
