Orihuela approves first budget in six years amid heated debate
In an extraordinary session lasting just 40 minutes, the Orihuela plenary session has approved the new municipal budgets, marking the first budget
approval since 2018. The budgets, endorsed by the governing coalition of the People’s Party (PP) and Vox, were passed without incorporating any amendments
from the opposition or addressing public allegations. These budgets will take effect once published in the Official Gazette of the Province, expected by early June.
Mayor Pepe Vegara, who presided over the session, declared the approval a significant achievement for Orihuela, stating, “The budgets are approved, which will be good for Orihuela, despite everything.” He also noted the session’s historic importance, calling it “the most important plenary session of the last six years.”
PP spokesperson Víctor Valverde likened the approval to a monumental achievement, comparing it to the moon landing by saying, “A small step for man; a great leap for humanity.” He emphasised that the new budgets would address longstanding
financial deficits and meet the demands of Orihuela’s residents.
However, the session was not without contention. Opposition parties, including the Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE), Ciudadanos (Cs), and Cambiemos, voted against the budget.
Ciudadanos spokesperson José Aix criticised the government for no longer having excuses for poor management, attributing previous failures to a lack of funds.
This sparked a heated exchange with Vox spokesperson Manuel Mestre, who accused Ciudadanos of failing to manage effectively due to “spurious interests.”
The session saw further clashes, with Aix and Mestre exchanging barbs over loyalty and political manoeuvring. Aix suggested that the approval left Mestre “at the mercy of the PP,” while Mestre defended his party’s commitment to collaboration and loyalty.
Instability
PSOE spokesperson Carolina Gracia accused Vox of becoming a necessary but unreliable partner for the PP, citing recent changes and issues in Orihuela Cultural department as evidence
of internal conflicts within the coalition. She warned that this dynamic could lead to future instability in Orihuela’s governance. Opposition members collectively criticised the government for not including any of their proposals in the new budgets. Jose Aix accused Mayor Vegara of inheriting the worst habits of his predecessors, likening the budget approval process to a take-it-or-leaveit deal. Cambiemos councillor Enrique Montero lamented that the budgets were designed to appease citizens with promises of investments that might not be realised, given the administration’s previous failures to manage effectively.
Gracia concluded that the budgets were created “for the people, but without counting on the people,” warning that they represented the cost of far-right governance. She highlighted that since taking power, the current government had approved 21.5 million euros in credit modifications but managed to allocate only 4.5 million euros towards debt repayment.
The approval of these budgets marks a significant yet controversial milestone for Orihuela, setting the stage for future political and financial developments in the city.

Join the Walk for Life 2024
This year the Orihuela Costa’s biggest anti-cancer event of the year returns to Playa Flamenca Promenade. The AACCWalf for Life will take place on Sunday 2nd June and start and end at the area in front of Surfers Bar.
Walkers are once again being asked to sign up for the walk which will see crowds gather around 10.30am for a 11.00am start. This event is always a wonderful sight to behold as walkers and supporters alike dress head-to-toe in pink - women, men, children and pets – and then walk a 5km route around the coast.
The registration fee is €5 and each person registered will receive a bottle of water provided by Surfers Bar and a shoulder bag donated by Spain Property Shop.
The walk is part of a larger fun-day andTorrevieja Pipes & Drums will be on hand to lead the walkers on their way and entertainment will be provided by Simon Morton and Sunshine FM.
Sponsorship forms are available for all
registered walkers should they wish to get their friends and relatives to sponsor them for the walk. All proceeds will be donated to the AACC to help in the fight against cancer.
Charity president Maria Wilson said: “Maria and the Pink Ladies charity have run this event for many years in aid of the AACC. We are hoping this year will see the event raise much needed funds to support our early detection programme and cancer screening for women and men in Orihuela Costa. Please come along and support the Walk for Life and help raise money to fight cancer in the local community.”
Cancer is among the leading causes of death worldwide. In 2022, there were almost 20 million new cases and 9.7 million cancer-related deaths worldwide. By 2040, the number of new cancer cases per year is expected to rise to 29.9 million and the number of cancer-related deaths to 15.3 million.
Lung cancer was the most commonly occurring cancer worldwide with 2.5 million
new cases accounting for 12.4% of the total new cases. Female breast cancer ranked second (2.3 million cases, 11.6%), followed by colorectal cancer (1.9 million cases, 9.6%), prostate cancer (1.5 million cases, 7.3%), and stomach cancer (970 000 cases, 4.9%).
PIOC calls for Orihuela budget cancellation
Orihuela Costa political party PIOC is calling for the cancellation of the Orihuela Budget. The party is citing a lack of documents as the reason, claiming documents such as approval of previous Budget, the Financial Report of the previous year and a list of employees as not being available. PIOC claims that without these documents it is impossible to evaluate the Budget and according to the Supreme tribunal in Spain, this Budget cannot be approved. Once the town hall is aware of this fact, it could become not only negligent but illegal to approve without legal
consequences. Apart from this, PIOC is happy that at last the municipality has its first Budget in 5 years. The legality is to have one every year, but this has not been the case in the city of Orihuela.
The previous Budget, 5 years ago, was around €80 million. Now Orihuela wants to spend €140 million with a loan of €40 million. Orihuela over the previous 8 years has managed to spend around €2 million per year on new projects. Now it wants to spend €40 million in 6 months. An improvement in efficiency of 4000%, which PIOC calls ‘totally ridiculous.
A PIOC spokesman said: “Orihuela Costa provides more than 60% of the total income for the municipality but get less than 20% in return. For Orihuela Costa, in the proposed Budget there are €12 millions out of €40 millions in investments. That is a 30%. But we have 32% (28,000 out of 86,000) of the total inhabitants and if actual people living here are considered, we have 50% (45,000 out of 86,000). Therefore, we demand more money because we are in fact 50% of the people.”

Spain recalls ambassador after controversial remarks by Argentine President
In a significant diplomatic move, Spain has announced the recall of its ambassador from Buenos Aires. This decision came after Argentine President Javier Milei, speaking at a farright event in Madrid, accused Begoña Gómez, the wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, of corruption.
The controversy erupted during Milei’s address at Viva 24, a gathering organised by Spain’s far-right Vox party. The event featured prominent global farright leaders, including Italy’s Giorgia Meloni and France’s Marine Le Pen. Without naming Sánchez or his wife directly, Milei alluded to a recent investigation into Gómez for alleged influence peddling and corruption, a probe Sánchez has vehemently dismissed as politically motivated.
“The global elites don’t realize how destructive it can be to implement the ideas of socialism … even if you have a corrupt wife, let’s say, it gets dirty, and you take five days to think about it,” Milei stated, referencing a period Sánchez took to consider his resignation amidst the allegations.
In response, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares
announced the recall of the ambassador and demanded a public apology from Milei. “It is unacceptable that a sitting president visiting Spain should insult Spain and the Spanish prime minister, a fact that breaks with all diplomatic customs,” Albares declared in a televised address.
The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, also condemned Milei’s remarks, further escalating the diplomatic row. The recall of an ambassador is one of the strongest diplomatic measures, often a precursor to severing diplomatic relations.
Milei, an outspoken critic of socialism, reposted a video of his contentious speech on social media, defiantly commenting, “Here are my words at Viva 24 that make you so uncomfortable.” His visit to Spain, which began on Friday, did not include meetings with Sánchez or King Felipe VI, customary engagements for visiting foreign leaders.
During his stay, Milei continued to denounce socialism in stark terms. On his first day in Spain, he described socialism as “satanic” and “carcinogenic.” His fiery rhetoric at the Vistalegre congress centre, attended by approximately 11,000 people,
underscored his commitment to libertarian ideals and his mission to combat socialism.
Shadow
The incident has cast a shadow over the upcoming European Parliament elections, scheduled from 6th – 9th June, where farright parties are poised to make significant gains. Leaders like Marine Le Pen and Viktor Orban, through speeches and video messages, echoed themes of nationalism and opposition to immigration.
In response to the gathering, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez criticized the international far-right coalition, stating on social media that they convened in Madrid “because Spain represents what they hate: feminism, social justice, labour dignity.”
Protests also erupted in Madrid’s central Plaza de Colón, where hundreds of demonstrators, holding signs that read “No fascism!”, voiced their opposition to the far-right assembly.
The diplomatic fallout and public backlash highlight the deepening ideological divides and the contentious nature of contemporary global politics.
Government approves Vodafone’s €5 billion sale of Spanish division
In a major move within the telecommunications sector, the Spanish government has approved the sale of Vodafone’s Spanish division to the investment fund Zegona for up to €5 billion. Digital Transformation Minister José Luis Escrivá announced the decision, highlighting Zegona’s commitment to a substantial medium-term investment in both fixed and mobile telephony.
Vodafone, a British mobile phone giant, had previously disclosed in October that it reached an agreement to sell its Spanish business to Zegona. The deal is part of Vodafone’s strategy to streamline its European operations in response to shareholder pressure. Zegona, founded by former Virgin Media executives, is set to pay Vodafone €4.1 billion in cash and provide up to 900 million shares in the Londonlisted investment fund. The transaction is anticipated to be finalized by the end of May, according to Vodafone’s statement.
Following this sale, Vodafone plans to initiate a €500-million share buyback program starting 15 May, as part of its broader objective to return €2 billion to shareholders over the next year.
Further emphasising its streamlining efforts, Vodafone agreed in June to merge its British operations with Three UK, a company owned by Hong Kong-based CK Hutchison. This merger will create the largest mobile operator in the UK, boasting 27 million customers and accelerating the deployment of faster 5G connectivity.
Vodafone, which serves over 300 million mobile customers across Europe and Africa, remains heavily focused on expanding its 5G infrastructure in the UK. In late 2022, the company formed a joint venture with investment firms GIP and KKR, maintaining a majority stake in its European masts division, Vantage Towers, as part of its efforts to bolster its telecommunications network.

Iberian Lynx doubles numbers in just three years
The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is continuing on its upward journey, although it is still at risk of extinction. The last census in 2023 shows that the species has doubled its population in the last three years and has reached 2,021 cats, with 1,299 adults or subadults and 722 cubs. Despite the promising data, 750 breeding females would be needed to classify the species in a favourable conservation status, and in this latest count only 406 have been located.
According to Spain’s Ministry for the Ecological Transition, they are “gradually” getting closer to the necessary number, but are still falling short.
Captive breeding centres have played an essential role in this recovery. From 2011 to 2023, 372 lynxes born in the four existing centres have been released. The population has been expanding, and last year the reproduction of the species was verified in 14 population centres, in addition to the stable presence in new areas of the Spanish region of Murcia, and the provinces of Albacete, Badajoz, Toledo and Ciudad Real. Most of the specimens, 1,731 or 85% of the total, live in Spain and the rest, 291, are in Portugal. The stable populations are located in four Spanish regions: Andalusia with 755 specimens (43.6% of the Spanish population), closely followed by Castilla-La Mancha with 715 lynxes (41.3%), Extremadura where 253 specimens were located, and Murcia with seven.
The ministry believes that the
data allows for a degree of optimism, because the feline’s tendency is positive and has continued on an upward trend since 2015, the year in which the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lowered its threat level. The species went from being “critically endangered” to simply “endangered.”
It was a fundamental step for the survival of an animal that was close to extinction in 2002, when only 94 specimens remained in Andalusia.
Captive breeding programs with significant European investment have allowed the creation of different nuclei and have managed to reverse the situation. This increase now means that lynxes are approaching inhabited places, as happened in late March, when a rancher found four lynxes born in his haystack in Menasalbas, municipality of Toledo.
“We are at an average growth of 20%, a trend that has been maintained due to the creation of three new nuclei,” says Ramón Pérez de Ayala, a member of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and a specialist in the species. To obtain the number of breeding females, it is necessary, according to their calculations, to create another five new areas with lynxes. “There were populations that grew a lot, up to 30%, but then they stabilized,” he explains. This occurred in the mountains of Toledo, one of the biggest success stories of reintroduction. “There, the first place where they became active was practically saturated, but the lynxes have moved to a neighbouring
area, which has kept up the growth,” he notes. The same situation has taken place in other areas such as Guarrizas (Jaén) and in Portugal, in the Guadiana valley area.
Territory
A reproductive female needs a territory of about 500 hectares, although it all depends on the amount of food available: the more food there is, the less space is needed. The rabbit is the main component of their diet and there are places where the rabbit population cannot recover, affected mainly by a deadly hemorrhagic disease. Depending on the areas, the drop is between 30% and 87% in a decade, indicates Pérez de Ayala. In this boom situation, the feline’s biggest enemy is road accidents, which has become its main cause of mortality. “In 2023 there were 144 deaths due to this cause, 7.1% of the population, and we cannot forget poaching, which goes unnoticed.”
Spain and US acknowledge their differences over recognition of Palestinian state
Spain’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, and U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken have acknowledged their countries’ differences regarding the recognition of Palestinian statehood. While Albares announced the Spanish government’s intention to take that step in the coming days, Blinken reiterated that recognition must occur “at the end of the process,” as a result of a peace agreement between Israelis and Palestinians, according to Spanish diplomatic sources. The same sources stressed that Blinken added this is a sovereign decision to be made by each country and expressed respect.
In statements to reporters, Albares insisted that the goal of his trip to Washington was not to “ask permission” from the U.S. Administration — as he has been accused of doing by Spain’s leftist political group Izquierda Unida (United Left) — nor to inform Blinken in advance about the decision that the Spanish executive will take. “It has not been discussed in these terms, nor does Blinken feel that this is a request for acquiescence,” said Albares, acknowledging that, while discussing the Middle East conflict, he explained Spain’s po-
sition on the matter, which is well known and includes the immediate recognition of the Palestinian State. Albares declined to confirm whether the date chosen by Spain and other European countries, such as Ireland, Malta and Slovenia to formalise diplomatic recognition is 21st May, as reported. He insisted that “the important thing is the political decision, which has already been made.”
Although the Spanish foreign minister downplayed the differences between Washington and Madrid on the issue of the war in Gaza, these were evident this Friday at the General Assembly vote in favor of the Security Council’s reconsideration of Palestine’s full UN membership. Spain (along with 142 other countries) voted in favor besides co-sponsoring the initiative, and the United States voted against.
The Arab-Israeli conflict was the only point of friction in a meeting that took place in an atmosphere of “great cordiality” according to Spanish diplomatic sources, and lasted for one hour and 25 minutes, preceded by a brief talk between the two officials who discussed “confidential matters.”

Work completed on Orihuela Palmeral viewpoint
The Councilor for the Environment, Noelia Grao, announced this morning the end of the restoration and adaptation work on the Palmeral viewpoint, which began last April.
And, as the Oriolana councilor has stated, “this environment was very deteriorated and it was necessary to carry out this action for its recovery.” Likewise, this action has received a subsidy from the Provincial Council of Alicante for an amount of 32,000 euros , within the call for aid for investments in restoration of areas
degraded by uncontrolled waste dumping.
The work has consisted of restoring and adapting the viewpoint area through clearing tasks, removal of scattered garbage, removal of inert waste, as well as conditioning of the path and its signage. On the other hand, stones have been placed on the sides of the roads as a deterrent to avoid the dumping of inert materials on the margins while aromatic, herbaceous and native trees have also been planted.
In the same way, 140 tons of debris and waste have been removed during the work, which is why the Oriolana councilor has asked for “citizen collaboration to care for and maintain this public space.” At the end, Noelia Grao showed her satisfaction with the renewed state of the surroundings of the viewpoint and insisted on the importance that “we can all collaborate to keep it clean and thus be able to enjoy this space that is located in a special enclave.” .

Suspected drug dealer being extradited from Spain after his arrest
A suspected drug dealer who is believed to have fled to Spain in a desperate attempt to evade police has been arrested.
The fugitive, who was living in Tenerife, has been arrested after a warrant was authorised for his suspected involvement in a large drugs conspiracy involving cocaine and money laundering.
The international operation was led by the North East Regional Organised Crime Unit (NEROCU) and supported by the National Crime Agency (NCA) and Spanish Police who apprehended the 55-year-old man last Monday (May 20).
The suspect was arrested on behalf of the warrant and will remain in police custody while he awaits extradition back to the UK.
Following the arrest, Detective Chief Inspector Daryll Tomlinson, said: “This has been an outstanding display of partnership working between law enforcement agencies working in tandem to execute a warrant abroad and bring a suspect into police custody.
“I want to thank everyone involved in this operation and I hope it sends a clear message to anyone looking to evade
police – we have every tool necessary at our disposal to pursue suspects, dismantle organised crime and protect victims.
“Work just like this will continue as part of Operation Sentinel – our united front to tackle all forms of Serious and Organised crime.”
NCA International Regional Manager Neil Keeping said: “We have National Crime Agency officers based across the globe working day in, day out on behalf of UK law enforcement.
“The NCA collaborated with the Spanish National Police to identify that the suspect was living in Tenerife and to ensure he
was arrested. We’re also working with Spanish judicial authorities, the CPS and UK police to arrange his extradition back to the UK.
“This is just one of many cases in which the NCA, working with international partners and UK police, is making sure that people wanted in connection with allegations of serious crime have nowhere safe to hide.”
To report suspicious behaviour or activity linked to drug crime, visit your local police’s website, or alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.

The pound ended last week with more positive momentum to the upside against both the euro and the US dollar. Sterling gained 1.5% versus the USD and is currently sitting towards the upper levels of recent trading ranges with both the dollar and the euro. The pound appeared to benefit from a more stable outlook on interest rate policy in comparison to the dollar, becoming more favoured by investors towards the end of the week. Last week’s labour market figures also showed strong wage growth amongst the public sector, manufacturing and financial markets, and the unemployment claimant count subduing.
The next hurdle for the pound came on Wednesday, when the UK CPI inflation data was released, showing a rate of 2.3%, which is above the expected 2.1%. This marks the lowest level since July 2021. A significant contributor to this inflation was the services industry, where prices rose by 5.9%, compared to the 5.5% projected by the Bank of England. Following the release of this data, there has been growing scepticism about a potential interest rate cut in June.
Shortly after the CPI data release, Rishi Sunak announced the next UK general election on 4th July. Campaigning is now expected to start in earnest. Historically, the pre-election period has not caused significant volatility in GBP. However, this time there will be close examination of all policy announcements, particularly from Labour, and their potential implications for medium- and long-term economic growth, inflation, and interest rates.
GBP/EUR touched a 21-month high on Thursday morning, following Wednesday’s UK inflation data and the general election announcement. Although the market touched a similar level in February and March this year, to find a comparable point, we have to look all the way back to August 2022, before the now-infamous mini-budget.
Additionally, the UK manufacturing and services Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) was released on Thursday morning. The manufacturing data exceeded expectations with a reading of 51.3, while services came in slightly below expectations at 52.9, down
GBP / EUR UPDATE
from 55.0.
Today, the UK retail sales report revealed a significant decline in retail sales volumes, which measure the quantity of goods bought by consumers. Sales dropped by 2.3% in April 2024, following a revised decrease of 0.2% in March 2024 with clothing, sports equipment, games and toys, and furniture sectors all experiencing notable declines in sales.
EUR The euro remains resilient against the pound, which has tightened up the year’s trading range so far and also firmed up against the US dollar at the end of last week. Eurozone stocks opened higher earlier in the week as expectations for an interest rate cut from the European Central Bank in June continue to gather pace.
We had a slow start to the week on data due to bank holidays across some of the key contributors to the zone. However, yesterday, the French, German, and Eurozone Manufacturing and Services PMI data was released. The French services sector contracted slightly, coming in at 49.4, down from 51.3 previously, and the gradually recovering manufacturing sector came in above market forecasts at 46.7.
In Germany, business activity rose for the second consecutive month. The services data exceeded forecasts, coming in at 53.9, while manufacturing posted 45.4 ahead of the expected figure of 43.5.
Looking at the Eurozone as a whole, it was reported that economic recovery gained momentum in May, marked by stronger business activity, new orders, and employment. Its manufacturing PMI data exceeded forecasts, coming in at 47.4, up from 45.7 previously, while the services sector data came in slightly below expectation at 53.3, marking no change from the previous month.
Yesterday also marked the start of the annual Group of Seven (G7) meetings. This summit involves the heads of state or government from Canada, Italy, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the US.

Benejúzar to have its first dog park
Benejúzar will soon have its first dog park in the area of the industrial estate. The Benejúzar City Council has begun the bidding process for the works of this infrastructure with an approximate area of 800 m2 that will be located on a municipally owned plot, in the La Cerámica industrial estate, between General Gutiérrez Mellado streets and Avenida de the glory.
The Councilor for Animal Welfare, José Antonio Martínez, has indicated that this space “will soon be able to be used by those who have pets and need a conditioned place where they can release their dogs safely, while minimizing possible inconvenience to the rest of the community.” citizenship”.
After the recovery and conditioning of the land, “it is planned that the facilities will have a perimeter fence for the safety of park users, to which four games will be added for canine activity such as high jump, ring, see-saw and slalom,” explained the mayor.
Likewise, Martínez has indicated that “a trash can will be installed with a bag dispenser included, so that park users can collect the
dogs’ droppings and maintain good cleanliness and hygiene conditions at all times.”
The budget contemplated for the works, which will have an estimated duration of one and a half months, amounts to a total of 11,802.39 euros.
The amount will be financed in its entirety by a subsidy granted by the Provincial Council of Alicante through the aid corresponding to the Plan + Cerca 2023, in the line intended for investments for the paving of public roads in municipalities.
For his part, the mayor of Benejúzar, Vicente Cases,

Beach front restaurant in Mallorca collapses killing four people
Investigators on the Spanish island of Mallorca are examining whether overloading caused the collapse of a beachfront restaurant and club last Thursday night, which killed four people and injured 16 others.
The two-storey Medusa Beach Club in Palma de Mallorca collapsed around 8:30 pm local time, trapping many in the rubble. A firefighter described the scene as “nightmarish,” with people screaming and rubble piled high.
Emergency services confirmed four deaths and 16 hospitalizations, including seven in critical condition and nine seriously injured.
The victims included a 23-year-old Spanish worker, two German tourists in their 20s, and a 44-year-old Senegalese man.
Palma’s chief firefighter, Eder García, stated that the main hypothesis is excess weight. A police spokesperson added that the terrace likely collapsed due to this.
Spain’sPrime
Minister, PedroSánchez expressed condolences and promised support, while Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic Islands regional government, extended her sympathies to the victims’ families and thanked emergency services.
Palma de Mallorca, a popular tourist destination, is experiencing the start of its tourist season.
The UK Foreign Office reported no British nationals involved in the incident.

Two arrested for garage robberies in Orihuela
The National Police have arrested the alleged perpetrators of several robberies in a garage in a central area of Orihuela. The detainees managed to enter the garage with several parked vehicles and motorcycles and forced open the suitcases of several motorcycles to remove the helmets that were inside.
The Judicial Police became aware of the facts when the owner of one of the forced motorcycles appeared at the police station to file a complaint. During the narration of the events, the complainant provided relevant data about the “modus operandi” used by the authors and about the stolen effects. He also expressed suspicions that possibly more vehicles had been broken into.
The agents collected all the information at their disposal, being able to acquire relevant data on the schedules of action. They consulted specific databases and established patrols over the frequent places where stolen objects are usually “released.” In this way, they learned where some of the stolen items were located.
The identification of one of the perpetrators was determined and
three helmets that were stolen were recovered. Thanks to these investigations, it was learned that two of these helmets belonged to two different victims than the one who reported the first incidents. With all the data obtained, the National Police proceeded to arrest one of the perpetrators. This was located in Orihuela, being a key piece in finding out who was the second author of the motorcycle robberies. During this stage of the investigation, a second victim of the robberies was located, and two of the recovered helmets were
delivered.
The second author was arrested a few days later in the early hours of the morning, also in Orihuela.
The detainees, two Spanish men aged 31 and 33, had a multitude of criminal records for different events. The actions were brought to the attention of the Orihuela Guard Court of Instruction. The National Police was able to clarify three robberies with force, leaving the investigation open to locate other people who could have been victims of these two men.

Fish product from Morocco intended for the Spanish market withdrawn
According to the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (Aesan), Anisakis is a parasite found in certain fish products. Its larvae become active in the human digestive system when raw or improperly prepared fish is consumed. Aesan notes that “human anisakiasis is a public health problem that has been increasing in recent years worldwide, particularly in countries with high fish consumption.” The rise in anisakiasis
is attributed to several factors: an increased presence of the parasite in fish, new gastronomic trends involving raw or inadequately prepared fish, and improved diagnostic techniques. Anisakiasis is caused by ingesting Anisakis larvae in raw or undercooked fish and shellfish. Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and fever, typically appearing within hours of consuming infected fish or shellfish.
Preventive measures are crucial for controlling anisakiasis. Risk reduction guidelines must address every stage of the food chain, from capture and handling to technological treatments of processed products, and recommendations for mass catering and consumers. European Union legislation has established measures for all operators involved in the production-toconsumption chain to ensure comprehensive prevention.

Arrests made following a series of citrus fruit scams across the Vega Baja
The Civil Guard, within the framework of operation Molino 24, has arrested one person and investigated another for the alleged commission of eight crimes of fraud. After identifying 12 victims in the region of Vega Baja and Alto Vinalopó in Alicante, as well as in towns in Murcia, only eight of them filed a formal complaint. In total, these people took 71,370 kg of lemons, owing an amount of 31,954 euros to their victims. The Court of Guard of the Judicial District of Orihuela has been informed of all police actions.
In March of this year, the Countryside Robbery Team (ROCA) of the Torrevieja Civil Guard Company took charge of a report of a scam involving the purchase and sale of lemons on a farm in Benferri. The main suspect, taking advantage of the trust generated by an intermediary, negotiated and signed a purchase and sale contract for 8,300
kg of lemons, specifying payment by bank transfer that was never made.
The alleged perpetrators, a businessman in the agricultural sector and his accomplice who acted as an intermediary, contacted and negotiated with the victims, collected the merchandise and agreed upon payments through bank transfers, checks or promissory notes that turned out to be worthless.
Operation Molino 24, supported by the Research Area of the Callosa de Segura Main Post, included technical inspections at several agricultural farms.
The suspects, known for similar incidents, conducted negotiations and set prices without fear. These scams are characterized by using the façade of a company of apparent solvency to acquire merchandise that is easily and quickly marketed (food products, fruits, vegetables), which are then
paid in installments with verbal deals or bad checks, selling the merchandise obtained to a lower price to get cash immediately. At the beginning of May, once the participation of the suspects in 8 fraud crimes could be proven, they were summoned to the Almoradí Civil Guard headquarters. The businessman was arrested and later released, while his accomplice was investigated for these events.

Four Weddings and a Funeral
Sunday 2nd June - BBC One - 11.30 pm
In Britain, slightly bumbling and always tardy Charles (Hugh Grant) and his closest group of friends seem always to be attending weddings, but are never the bride nor groom, and as such, each, with the exception of gay couple Gareth (Simon Callow) and Matthew (John Hannah), is looking for love. At the wedding of their friends, Angus (Timothy Walker) and Laura (Sara Crowe), where Charles is acting as best man, Charles meets an American woman named Carrie (Andie MacDowell). For him, it’s love at first sight. She too is attracted to him. Although they spend a memorable evening together, that’s all it ends up being. Over three more successive weddings - some of the brides and grooms who are very near and dear to Charles’ heart - and one unfortunate funeral, Charles runs into Carrie, but something always seems to prevent the two of them from getting together. He also runs into a plethora of old girlfriends, one of whom he may believe is really the one he was meant to end up with, especially if Carrie seems to remain unobtainable. Will Charles settle for who in his heart is second best, or will fate finally bring Charles and Carrie together?

Spain’s Met Office warns of weather
‘rollercoaster’
with a mix of rain and high temperatures
As we approach the start of summer in Spain, the weather has been characterized by a mix of high temperatures, especially in early May, followed by recent rains and a slight drop in temperatures in some regions.
This fluctuating weather is expected to continue, with a “rollercoaster” pattern bringing rain to much of the country while temperatures rise in other areas. According to Spain’s state weather agency (Aemet), rain and storms will persist in Catalonia and the Valencia regions on Wednesday, May 22.
Meanwhile, the rest of mainland Spain will see an increase in temperatures, with Murcia expected to reach a high of 30°C, the highest among provincial capitals.
Warnings for rain and thunderstorms have been issued for Barcelona and Castellón, and Gerona is under a heavy rainfall alert. Weather instability remains in the extreme north of the mainland and the north of the Balearic Islands.
From the early hours, showers and thunderstorms are forecast for eastern Catalonia and northern Balearic Islands, with particularly heavy showers along the Catalan coast.
In the far north, cloudy skies and scattered weak precipitation are expected in the morning, intensifying and becoming widespread by the afternoon, with thunderstorms potentially becoming heavy in northern Catalonia. The Pyrenees will also
see light frosts and snow levels between 1,800 and 2,200 meters, dropping to 1,400-1,800 meters in the Cantabrian mountains.
Large parts of northern Spain will start with low clouds, potentially leading to isolated showers by the afternoon, particularly in the eastern Iberian Peninsula. The southern half of the mainland and the rest of the Balearic Islands will remain mostly clear, though medium and high clouds may appear in the afternoon.
In the Canary Islands, the north will remain cloudy with weak, isolated rainfall in mountainous areas, while the rest of the archipelago will have cloudy intervals, with possible afternoon showers in mountainous inland areas. Morning fog is expected in the Balearic Islands, mountainous
areas of the Canary Islands, and the northern half of the peninsula.
Maximum temperatures will decrease in the northern third of Spain and the Balearic Islands, while the rest of the mainland will see an increase. Minimum temperatures will drop in the northwest and rise in the upper Ebro, with no significant changes elsewhere. The highest temperatures are expected in Murcia (30°C), Cordoba (29°C), and Malaga (28°C).

What can do with it”? This answer also applies to desktop computers. If it can run Windows 10 it is worth passing on to a new owner. Before you do that, you will need to remove all your files and photos by copying to a suitable USB storage device or by using Cloud Storage. You can then restore your computer to its original settings by: Go to “Start” and open the “Settings” app. In the “Update & security” section, choose “Recovery.” Click on “Get started” under “Reset this PC.” In the next window, you can choose either “Keep my files” or “Remove everything. For computers with older versions of Windows that you no longer need they can be recycled. You will need to perform the following after removing your files. For Windows 8 The first step is to open the system settings using the Windows shortcut ‘Windows’ key + ‘i’. From there, select “Change PC settings”. Click on “Update & Recovery” and then on “Recovery”. Then select “Get started” under the heading “Remove everything and reinstall Windows”. For Windows 7 Computer 1. Click “Wipe Disk” from the panel. 2. Choose the OS drive you want to wipe and click “Next.” 3. Notice: Select the correct OS drive to erase. ... 4. Choose an appropriate wiping method and then click “Next.” 5. Confirm the warning message and click “Wipe.” 6. Wait for wiping to complete. “What is the difference between Storage and Memory”? In computers, mobile phones, tablets and other smart devices there is both Storage and Memory. Memory is what your computer uses to store data temporarily, while storage is where you save files permanently. When you save a file, it’s copied from the memory onto the storage drive. Spain increases unemployment benefit to 570 euros per month
The Spanish government has approved, for the second time, a reform of the unemployment benefit, increasing the amount to 570 euros per month.
Announced on Tuesday, May 21, the new measures extend eligibility for financial aid and allow it to be combined with full-time employment. Key features include eliminating the retirement contribution cut for those over 52, which previously caused the law’s collapse in Congress, and permitting the continuation of contributory unemployment benefits for up to 180 days while working full-time.
o qualify, recipients must have been unemployed for at least twelve months and earn no more than 1,350 euros per month. The government is finalizing details with trade unions and parliamentary groups to ensure congressional approval, crucial for securing a 10 billion euro tranche of European funds.
If recipients choose to keep financial assistance while starting a job, the six months of aid will be deducted from future benefits. The benefit amount will vary from 480 euros to 150 euros per month, based on unemployment
duration and work history.
Additionally, the new benefits will increase by 90 euros per month for the first six months, paying 570 euros instead of 480 euros.
After six months, it will be 540 euros per month, and after one year, it will revert to 480 euros. However, those over 52 will remain at 480 euros but can receive this aid indefinitely until retirement, with contributions paid at 125% of the minimum base.
Spanish photographer killed while filming TV documentary in Ethiopia
Further improvements include eliminating cuts for part-time workers, allowing those with less than 12 months of contributions to receive benefits, removing the one-month waiting period, and simplifying administrative procedures.
Additionally, the government will amend the Workers’ Statute to prohibit sudden dismissals due to severe disability or permanent incapacity, ensuring workers have the right to request job adaptations.
Expanded eligibility now includes women victims of gender or sexual violence from age 16, returning migrants, people under 45 without family responsibilities, temporary agricultural workers across Spain, and Moroccans commuting to Ceuta and Melilla.
Catalan photographer and tourist guide Toni Espadas has been shot dead in Ethiopia while filming a documentary.
Two individuals opened fire on the crew of Partners of the World (Socios por el Mundo), a well-known Chilean television program. The team, including the Spanish photographer, was there to report on a tribe in Ethiopia. “As Canal 13, we deeply regret the death of Toni, and from a distance, we send his family all our support,” the television station stated. The other members of the crew were unharmed.
They were filming the Mursi tribe, who were not responsible for the attack.
“The drivers and all the members of the program team, produced by MkZeta, are in good health,” a statement clarified. The Chilean foreign ministry is working to repatriate the team as quickly as possible.
Born in Barcelona in 1969,
Toni Espadas specialized in travel and photography.
According to his website, he opened his first travel agency in Ethiopia in 2010, expanding to Uganda, Tanzania, Gabon, Eritrea, Benin, Angola, and South Sudan. “For some years now, have been advising journalists and production companies, working as a fixer for the production of reports, documentaries, and television programs
focusing on African peoples and cultures,” Espadas wrote in his biography.
Espadas was part of a team led by renowned Chilean journalist Francisco ‘Pancho’ Saavedra and actor Jorge Zabaleta. The Chilean program aims to “discover new and distant cultures, reveal exotic and beautiful landscapes, and live great adventures,” according to the TV channel’s website.

BBC bosses conducting an investigation into allegations of serious workplace misconduct against Strictly Come Dancing’s Giovanni Pernice have reportedly been told he sent a former celebrity dance partner an offensive video clip.
The BBC’s team are said to have been informed last week Giovanni, 33, sent the clip via WhatsApp before one of the series’ Saturday live shows.
According to The Sun, he did not make, commission or appear in the video.
BBC executives are currently believed to be scouring through nine years of Strictly footage to confirm or deny claims from three celebrities. Giovanni has strongly denied any wrongdoing, with a representative previously saying in a statement: ‘Giovanni is fully committed to clearing his name and defending his rep against accusations against him.’
It is claimed three past contestants are compiling dossiers to hand to their £700-an-hour lawyers before sending it to BBC bosses.
A source told the publication: ‘The BBC was told about the video clip and that someone found the content completely inappropriate, grossly offensive.
‘The BBC was told the celebrity was shocked and upset to receive it on a WhatsApp message, hours before the couple were meant to be dancing together on live television.
‘They were told they felt intimidated by it. The women are being incredibly brave in speaking out, especially as a lot of them are going up against vicious messages from his loyal fans.’
Jamie Laing broke down in tears as his wife Sophie Habboo revealed she had legally changed her surname.
The former Made In Chelsea stars married in front of their loved ones last April at the Chelsea Registry Office before jetting off to Spain in May for a second lavish ceremony.
Speaking during the latest episode of their podcast Newlyweds, Sophie, 30, couldn’t hold back her emotions as she revealed to Jamie, 35, that she is now officially, ‘Mrs Sophie Laing’.
As the Summer draws near at Hotel Algorfa ....
Broadcasters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford have announced they are going to divorce after 14 years of marriage.
The pair, who presented ITV daytime chat show This Morning together for 15 years before quitting the show in 2021, tied the knot in 2010.
They confirmed their split through a representative, who said: “Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes have
confirmed their marriage is over and they are in the process of divorcing.”
After leaving This Morning, Holmes, 64, joined GB News where he presents the channel’s breakfast show and Langsford, also 64, is a regular on ITV’s Loose Women.
Together they also presented Channel 5 programmes including How The Other Half Lives and Do The Right Thing With Eamonn And Ruth, and made numerous appearances on Channel 4’s Celebrity Gogglebox. Holmes and Langsford started dating in 1997. They have one son, Jack, who was born in 2002. Holmes also has three children, Declan, Rebecca and Niall, from his first marriage.
In the 2018 New Year Honours, Holmes became an OBE for services to broadcasting and was congratulated by Langsford, who called him her “darling”.
Langsford has also been a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing, where she was partnered with Anton Du Beke before he became a judge on the BBC show.
As the summer draws near, Hotel Algorfa prepares for the busy season ahead. New food menus are on the cards as we welcome a new member of the team to the kitchen who has already thrown exciting new ideas into the mix. We can’t wait to see what’s on the menu shortly and use the inspiration to consistently better customer experience! The bar area is seeing small improvements before the big renovation project due in the winter. New pumps have been installed with local Spanish lager Estrella now on tap alongside Estrella Victoria, Guinness, Olde English Cider, Spitfire Ale and Madri. Alcopops are back on sale to make way for the warmer weather and the terrace has seen the appearance of new tables and chairs that look a lot more tidy and inviting. The pool area is coming
to a completion shorly - as the staff begin to sweep away the months worth of dust from the construction, it’s clear to see the area taking shape. The pool is now open for use with the new lights and tiles that have brought the pool back to life. The area has seen a fresh lick of paint, a new handrail the whole way around and of course the parrot aviary which brings a lot of attention. The final few rooms near completion as the furniture continues to get delivered and installed, it’s the last few touches
before the online launch, welcoming new guests to the rooms by summer. The entertainment continues to get better and better - with something planned everyday of the week for the season, there’ll be no chance of boredom when holidaying at Hotel Algorfa. Come along and see for yourself our ever-growing hotel as it blossoms for its second summer. For more information on upcoming events check out our advert on page 2.

New Coffee Morning at La Siesta, Torrevieja
Coffee and Tea will be on offer outside La Siesta Church, Calle Granados, Urb La Siesta every Wednesday from 29th May between 1030 and 1230 for anyone who would like to go.
The Chaplaincy of Ss Peter and Paul, Torrevieja which celebrates Mass at the church each week has decided to offer a new ministry of hospitality for those on the Urbanisation at La Siesta in Torrevieja and beyond.
Sue Maude, the congregational warden at the church said: Whether you are out for a walk, would like some company, fancy getting out, are going to the nearby health centre, or just fancy a cup of tea or coffee, we will be delighted to welcome you.
The church offers refreshments after Mass outside at weekends and has decided to extend this ministry to Wednesday
mornings. Father Richard A. Seabrook SSC, the priest at the church, said: The area outside the church with the trees is a pleasant little oasis so it’s a delightful place to have cup of coffee. Anyone is welcome!
The lovely white church will also be open for private prayer at the same time for anyone who wants to some quiet time or even just wants a look inside.
Father Seabrook added: So often people walk past
the church during the week and it is locked. I hope by opening it on a Wednesday morning and by offering tea and coffee it will become a place that people can come along for a chat with each other.
They can also go inside and talk with God if they should so wish!
Mass times for La Siesta are listed on the noticeboard outside the church.
Top old wives tales –
Debunking myths about beauty and skin care
We have all heard some pretty ridiculous old wives tales before; Not just relating to beauty and skin care, but in general as kids growing up. “Don’t sit and watch TV too close”, “Don’t pull funny faces or the wind will change”….you get the idea.
At Indiana’s hair and lash boutique we get to hear some pretty interesting ones on a day to day basis, and so we thought we would share these with you!
Shaving causes more hair growth – FALSE
We hear this one a lot, and both men and women both seem to fall victim of this myth! By shaving, you are neither increasing or decreasing the number of hair follicles in the skin. If this were true, all men would have a quick cure for baldness – simply keep shaving!
Anti-wrinkle creams do not
work – FALSE
Whilst there are many snake oil products out there particularly in the beauty and skin care industry, there are many quality products which do help to hydrate, and improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. If you are not sure about which products you can trust, book a free skin consultation and we will be able to suggest the right products for your skin type which will give your skin amazing results.
Eating chocolate and pizza causes acne and breakouts –TRUE
Despite plenty of mis-information out there, eating these types of foods can increase the chances of your skin breaking out. The reason for this lies in the “bad guy” of the dietary fat family – Saturated Fat. These types of foods as well as many animal products contain this type of fat. There is evidence to suggest that consuming large amounts of saturated fat does aggravate the sebaceous glands of the skin. The sebaceous glands are what control the amount of oil that the skin produces. Increasing oil production in the skin does increase the chances of acne and breakouts.
Washing your face with cold water reduces the size of pores – FALSE
Unfortunately there is not much we can do to change the size of our pores. Washing with cold water does make it harder to clean pores, and that is why we suggest cleansing with warm water in order to achieve the best results. Regular facial treatments for example can really assist in keeping pores clean
leaving your skin smooth, fresh and revitalised.
The more expensive the product, the better it is – FALSE Like the old adage goes, you get what you pay for. While this can be true with many things in life, this is
not necessarily the case with skin care. The price tag of particular skin care does not always equate to a premium quality product. The best and most important thing to look for is the formulation and ingredients found in the product.
Not all of us are skin care experts though, so if you need assistance and some advice getting the right product for your skin type, book a consultation and we can assess your skin and devise the best skin care routine just for you.
Laser hair removal is a cosmetic procedure only and serves no purpose – FALSE
While laser hair removal is often regarded as a luxury and cosmetic procedure, the simple fact is that there are many serious medical conditions that can be cured and treated by the use of laser hair removal. One such condition which is very common in men particularly is Pilonidal Disease. This condition occurs when excess hair growth becomes ingrown deep in the skin and can cause a great amount of discomfort, embarrassment and pain.
Washing your face with soap makes your skin dry and flaky –TRUE
Washing your face with soap can have a negative affect on your skin, particularly if you use soap on your face. Often, these soaps contain ‘Parabens’ which are foaming agents and these chemicals really dry out the skin leaving your with a dull and flaky appearance.
Squeezing pimples and black heads can leave you with scarring and pitted skin – TRUE Squeezing and aggravating
black heads and pimples can lead to trauma to the skin, causing permanent scarring of the face and other areas of the body. Although it is hard sometimes to resist the urge, it is best to cleanse the skin and perform regular facial treatments in order to keep acne and pimples at bay.
Applying make up every day can cause oily, bad skin – TRUE & FALSE
While it is true that applying an inferior quality makeup can cause congestion and oily skin, the best thing to do is get yourself a quality mineral make up product. Mineral makeup allows your skin to naturally breathe and feeds your skin with nutrients instead of blocking your pores and trapping dirt beneath your skin. Book your appointment and come and see the difference that we can make to your skin!

My best friend stole my sister’s husband two years ago, and effectively ruined her life. Now my friend and my ex-brotherin-law are marrying. My sister doesn’t know that my friend still contacts me, and now my friend wants me to attend her wedding. Although I feel bad for not severing links with my friend, even after what she did; it is my opinion that my brother in law is also guilty. I always regarded my friend as the sister I never had, because my sister and I don’t really get along. If I go to the wedding, my sister will find out. My brother in law’s mother and father will be there, along with my sister’s kids. My family don’t know I still talk to my friend, and they also would be very angry with me.
It depends how much you value your relationship with your sister and your extended family, and I think this might be one of those situations where blood is
than water. If I were your sister and found out that you’d kept in touch with the woman who stole her husband, I would probably be very hurt and angry. Your longer letter also tells me that you told your sister, that you had cut ties with your friend; when you did not; and when she finds out, all hell could break loose. You also risk angering your family, who have quite rightly sided with your sister. It’s a dilemma, I agree but there are definitely rights and wrongs here, and siding with someone who ruined your sister’s life would be wrong. Once she finds out, she and your family may never forgive you; you need to weigh priorities. If your friend is reasonable, and can see what hurt it would bring, she hopefully may understand why you would not want to attend the wedding.

The fire affected the paint drying tunnel in the carpentry shop, but due to the efficient action of
the firefighters, the flames were prevented from spreading to the rest of the warehouse. Fortunately, there were no injuries in the incident.
The team was made up of a sergeant, a corporal and six firefighters from the Orihuela park, who worked in a coordinated and effective manner to control the situation. Likewise, a heavy urban pump and a heavy nurse pump were used to extinguish the fire.
Residents in Callosa raise concerns over road noise and accidents
The residents of the Mariano Cases neighborhood and the Camino Viejo de Callosa do not rest as they see how traffic, noise and accidents have increased in recent months. On Saturday, one of the neighbors reported this situation in the space “El Portavoz”, in Hoy por Hoy Vega Baja, after Cambiemos Orihuela conveyed the demands of the residents of the area to request the municipal government to review the measures. security of the roads at the entrance to these neighborhoods.
Serafina Sáez, a neighbor on the Camino Viejo de Callosa, has expressed her concern due to the amount of traffic that this road supports, which is not designed for heavy traffic, as well as the increase in vehicle traffic after the construction of the new one. fuel station.
The municipal group requests that the possibility of converting the road to a single direction be studied with the aim of reducing traffic and improving road safety. Likewise, it proposes the regulation of the entry of heavy trucks at specific times to guarantee the rest of the neighbors and the tranquility of the neighboring homes.
In addition to this point, the neighbors also request that a way be studied to reduce the high speed of passenger cars when they pass through the neighborhood, since it is located in an urban area without sidewalks and with homes adjacent to the road, which represents a danger to residents and homes themselves.
Cambiemos Orihuela considers it vitally important to address this problem urgently. For this reason, they believe that “it is essential that the Orihuela City Council, in close collaboration with the CHS and the Local Police, take concrete measures to address the
In the case of the Mariano Cases neighborhood, a large number of accidents have accumulated in recent months. This road belongs to the Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS), which partially complicates a quick solution. For this reason, Cambiemos Orihuela requests the council, and specifically the Department of Citizen Security, to urge the Confederation to work together to improve the signage at the intersection and establish the corresponding measures aimed at reducing the speed in this section, thus avoiding more accidents and some major misfortune. Sheerin’s
Golf Society “Charity Queen
Vase” at Font Del Llop
This is the fourth time we played for the re-named Charity Queen Vase, it used to be the Parkinson’s Vase sponsored by Geoff Ham but he handed the reigns to Don’s Ralph to continue to raise money for our charities.
The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Sheerin’s.
The weather was very sunny but quite windy in the afternoon as it always is at this course, the temperature was a cool 80 degrees.
We have to compliment the ground staff as the course was in excellent condition from the fairways to the greens. The format was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups.
Winner of the “Charity Queen Vase” from group A, could be handicap secretary’s new friend, was Michael O’Keeffe with a great handicap cutting score of 43 points, runner up of group A with another great score was “Mr Celtic” Brian Gordon with 41 points, third place was “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 40 points and fourth place was “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey with 37 points. Winner of group B for the second time was “Hammer” Gary Smith with 37 points and runner
up was John Collins with 34 points. Nearest the pin’s winners were group A hole 4 “He’s on Fire” Steve Burns, hole 15 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness, hole 17 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, group B were hole 5 John Collins, hole 13 “Flying Scotsman” Donald Main and hole 16 “Hammer” Gary Smith, best front 9 went to “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly with 21 points and best back 9 went to “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness with 21 points. Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson Murray dies
Two-time PGA Tour winner Grayson
Murray died last Saturday morning at age 30, the Tour confirmed.
Murray withdrew Friday late in his second round at the Charles Schwab Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, citing an illness. There were no immediate details on the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a memo to the membership that was released Saturday afternoon, commissioner Jay Monahan wrote: “I am at a loss for words. The PGA Tour is a family, and when you lose a member of your family, you are never the same. There is nothing we can do but mourn Grayson and pray for comfort for his loved ones.”
Monahan said that, after a conversation with Murray’s parents, tournament play at Colonial would continue.
“They were adamant that Grayson would want us to do so,” said Monahan, who flew to Texas to meet with players. “As difficult as it will be, we want to respect their wishes.”
“Grayson was the absolute best,” his caddie, Jay Green, told GolfChannel.com via text message. “Not only was he an incredible, thoughtful and generous boss, he was an even better friend. He truly would do anything for anyone. He has the best family, and my heart goes out to them. We will all miss him deeply.”
Following his victory at Waialae, Murray spoke optimistically about his future, saying that he had rediscovered his faith and was engaged to be married to Christiana Ritchie, whom he met in 2021.
Murray won the Sony Open in a playoff earlier this year, ending a six-year winless drought during which he’d struggled both mentally and physically. Murray, who was profiled in this in-depth piece by Golf Channel in 2017, had been open about his battles with anxiety and depression. He said in January that he sought treatment in the past few years for alcohol abuse but had been sober for several months.
Abbey Anglers
Both this weeks matches where fished at the El Bosquet complex near to Crevillent. Unfortunately the complex has been hit by some sort of water poisoning that has killed over 200 fish. The owners have worked tirelessly to re introduce fish and this is paying dividends with some great weights recorded this week.
Twenty three anglers turned out on the Tuesday on what was a very hot and sunny day.
Winner on the first day was the legend that is Dougie Hornblow, the ex Welsh International team manager with failing eyesight was forced from fish the bomb or feeder from peg 26. He caught a huge amount of carp and
weighed in 37.56kg to record a comfortable victory.
In second place was our Chairman, Richard King on the adjacent peg. Richard fished the method feeder with maggots or corn and weighed 26.14kg.
In third place was another of the walking wounded, John Waples. Drawn on the old flyer peg 1 he caught carp and mullet on the pole with maggots for 20.58kg.
Rods N Reels
The following day only 8 anglers attended and fished pegs 8 to 16. Runaway winner from peg 14 was Lenny Bolton. The silver fox fished the bomb with maggots and weighed in 33.06kg of decent sized carp.
In second place was Neil McBernie. Neil fished the pole mainly down the track with maggots due to the strong side wind and caught 24.40kg of mainly small carp.
In third place was Dougie Hornblow from peg 13. He again fished the feeder with bread or maggots and caught carp and several decent mullet for 22.62kg.
We would like to thank Borja and anyone who has helped with the restocking as it is sure paying dividends.
